Kate to Present Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award

It seems we may not have the traditional calendar of autumn/winter red carpet events to look forward to this year, with news of postponements and cancellations across the charity sector -- and indeed Buckingham Palace -- due to the pandemic. The Natural History Museum was determined, however, to host their Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards, and is doing so in style with help from their patron, the Duchess of Cambridge. Tomorrow at 8pm, we'll see Kate unveiling the winner from the gallery's Hintze Hall. Kensington Palace shared a sneak-peek with a couple of behind-the-scenes photos from the recording session.

The Duchess said: "It is so wonderful to be back at the reopened Natural History Museum where we can all enjoy its treasures once again. I'm here because tomorrow night I'm announcing the 56th winner of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year. I've been lucky enough to have a quick preview, and I can say it's truly spectacular. I can't wait for you all to see it."

I was once reliably told every woman needs a classic black dress (who doesn't love an LBD?) and a timeless black suit in their wardrobe. We're beginning to see a marked change in Kate's style of late: a transition from her working wardrobe of coat-dresses and midi, print styles to trousers, knits and stylish blouses. If I'm not mistaken, this is the first time we've seen her in a black trouser suit -- perfect choice for the event.

Hosted by the indefatigable naturalist and television presenter Chris Packham (brother of designer Jenny Packham) and his stepdaughter Megan McCubbin, the virtual event promises "an evening of celebration as we explore the beauty of the natural world". Chris and Megan warmed the nation's hearts as they teamed up for presenting duties on this year's Springwatch on BBC. In a time of uncertainty and restrictions, they invited us all to explore nature's wonders in our own back gardens.

The awards will be streamed live at 8 pm tomorrow on the Natural History Museum's YouTube channel.

I'll see you tomorrow evening with a full post on the event.

I think this type of public speaking is hard for shy Kate, but she does the RF proud! Kudos!

    1. I think you are correct, she appears a bit shy, but I do think her public speaking and video speeches are showing improvement. Good for her, she is tackling an area where she might be uncomfortable and meeting the requirement head on.

Public speaking is one of my downfalls, so Kate has my sympathy and admiration.

I am with you G.A. - I can not public speak at all:( I have tremendous admiration for the DoC for her achievement in being able to make speeches!!

    3. I found it so endearing to see something of the shy Kate back. She has made huge strides with small talk, public speaking and even hosting Zoom meetings but today you could see she still doesn’t find it easy.

    4. Still too much hand waving when she speaks — signals her nervousness. Kate looks fabulous though and her sincerity shines through.

  5. Haha! Maybe Kate's taken the same approach as the rest of us after 6 months of lockdown - "hang on, why do I have to wear impractical and uncomfortable clothes for work". Love it. I've been wanting her to wear more of this kind of thing for years!

She looks fantastic. Love the jacket and trouser combination. Also love the gentle waves in her hair. Very fresh, young and modern.

  7. The Duchess looks absolutely gorgeous. It has been great to see her confidence growing over time. Can't wait to see the pictures and the winner. Are those new earrings?? She should wear more pearls. They really suit her well.

  14. I welcome the change in styling and think she looks incredible. The hair, makeup, modern suiting, everything is just perfection. I do always enjoy seeing her public speaking; it makes her more human since it is so clear that she is nervous and not natural at it. But she’s working on it and getting out there and look boss doing it.

  15. Great choice of outfit. I guess in normal times there would have been a dinner and an evening gown. This tuxedo style suit says evening dress but is also modern and relaxed. Perfect.

I really like this outfit. wish I could see the full pants but then would probably be disappointed with the high tide ankles she's been prone to wearing:) Wish i could visit this museum, on the bucket list!!

  17. Kate is not a natural speaker as is evident in her deliberate pauses very reminisce of how Diana spoke when delivering commentary. But, with that said, how many of us is truly comfortable speaking in front of an audience or camera? I don't think many. It is a real gift to be able to sound natural. Actually, HM always does a fabulous job in my opinion. Listening to her I always feel like she is in the room just having a conversation with viewers. With that said, Kate looks fabulous! Hopefully, a new trend in dressing. Professional lighting is the miracle worker of makeup. We would all like some when taking phtos.

  20. When I first saw this black tuxedo style pants suit with the modern padded shoulder I guessed the designed is Steve McQueen (and I am right) because it is edgy, up to date and modern and Kate looks fabulous in it πŸ–€. This modern outfit is perfect for this occasion and I would like to see more of this modern style/look on Kate.

    1. I was so excited to see this chic fabulous outfit that I want to say the designer is Alexander McQueen, not the author.

    2. Smiling here. Steve McQeen is a deceased actor, you must mean Alexander McQueen.

    3. Hi, I still excited, that was spell check changing the word from actor to author, I also think that Kate has more than one fashion/style advisor now. Kate has been on Q this year with hair/fashion/style and trying new style outfits, shoes, handbags, etc.πŸ’Ž

    4. Smiling too!! Easy to confuse, sadly both are deceased, but both are talented, one makes good looks, the other looks good.

  22. I’ve said many times I don’t know how anyone could criticize her for anything! She is brilliant, beautiful, confident and an amazing wife and mother. She is quite spectacular to many of us in the USA. I say well done. I think she showed even more of herself with the small smiles throughout.

    1. How nicely said Sherry! I agree, even with all of her wonderful evolution and growth, the real Kate shines through!! I would include myself among those in the US who think she is quite spectacular and love what she is doing.

    1. I haven’t read any rumours about a new stylist but I would not be surprised. She is definitely adding elements and looks that she has never tried before.

  28. Kate came back from maternity leave with Prince Louis with new confidence and maturity. She is nailing every single engagement since with her energy focused on only few causes very dear to her. She is just stunning.

  29. I wonder if Kate has got a new stylist.:-) It is certainly not Natasha who is behind all the pants and bracelets and style change.

    1. It looks like you may be correct. Kate had more fashion misses during the Natasha years.

I think Kate really knows what suits her, she looked good during her university years and before her engagement, so she knows her style and how to dress for her fit figure.
