The Cambridges Enjoy a Bucklebury Christmas

Seasons greetings to you all! The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge took George and Charlotte to church on Christmas Day for the first time at St Mark's in Englefield this morning.

They were joined by the Middletons and Pippa's fiancé James Matthews.

It was certainly a treat when I saw the photos as reporters were told last year it would be "several years" before George or Charlotte would attend the Christmas service. Perhaps they felt St Mark's offered a more informal setting for their first festive attendance.

Fresh from a morning of present opening with George and Charlotte, the group made the short drive to church for the service where they enjoyed Christmas carols and a festive atmosphere with neighbours and other Berkshire residents. Richard Palmer reported: "At the service, overseen by The Rev Nick Wynne-Jones, they joined the congregation singing three much-loved carols: Hark the Herald Angels Sing, O Little Town of Bethlehem, and  O Come All Ye Faithful."

Indeed, George and Charlotte will have been thrilled to see Santa's sacks with their names written on them under the tree or under their beds. The Mail Online reports: "Costing £27 each, they were ordered from Selfridges in London and, according to their makers, are ‘large enough to cater for even the most generous amount of Christmas presents'. The sacks are trimmed with a special festive red and cream ticking that is exclusive to the department store. And appropriately, given that they are third and forth in line to the throne, they have a crown printed on them with the words: Express Mail Service Please deliver the enclosed presents to [Name] Delivery date: 25th December If undelivered please return to Father Christmas, the North Pole." A lovely treat for the children!

It has been reported the couple plan to continue alternating the festivities between Sandringham with the Royal family and hosting Christmas at their country home Anmer Hall, ensuring time is spent with both families, and like this year, spending Christmas with the Middletons in Bucklebury. The couple last spent the holiday in Bucklebury in 2012, when Kate was expecting George and recovering from Hyperemesis gravidarum. It was reported she very much wanted to spend her last Christmas before motherhood with her family.

This year, it is thought, with it being Pippa Middleton's last Christmas before her wedding to James Matthews in May, the whole family wanted to gather in Bucklebury. The next time we see the group at St Mark's will in fact be Pippa's wedding day - she has chosen to have her wedding there with a reception at the family home.

St Mark's is one of Berkshire's hidden gems and rich in history. The parish church, dedicated to St Mark, consists of a tower and a spire, nave, south aisle, chancel and north aisle (or Englefield Chapel). It was extensively restored by Sir George Gilbert Scott in 1857. In 1868, the tower was added in thirteenth century style, surmounted by a stone broach spire. The earliest part of the church, the nave, dates from about the year 1190, when the Norman was giving way to the Early English style of architecture. The arcade, between the nave and the south aisle, the eastern triple window of the south aisle, the several doorways and the older of the two fonts are good examples of this transitional period. The south doorway within the porch has been renewed. The older parts are early thirteenth century and the hinges are perhaps especially interesting. The hammered iron, curving like the 'C' is thought to stand for St Clement, the patron saint of smiths.

The Duke, Duchess and the Middletons exchanged festive wishes with Rev Nick Wynne-Jones before departing.

Those expressions :)

Kate and Carole look on as Charlotte walks over a steep step.

In her book, Celebrate, Pippa Middleton wrote of the 'magical' Christmases the Middleton family have enjoyed. Following church, the family will return to the manor where a traditional turkey lunch with all the trimmings will be enjoyed. Afterwards, they may take Lupo and the dogs out for an afternoon stroll, and the evening will be spent chatting (most likely about Pippa's wedding), enjoying drinks by the fire, playing board games and watching television specials. The always-reliable Camilla Tominey reports Carole has organised a Boxing Day shoot at the Yattendon estate in nearby Thatcham.

A lovely mother-daughter shot.

Michael and Carole Middleton purchased Bucklebury Manor in 2012. It is a beautiful property, which boasts seven bedrooms and eighteen acres of land, its own tennis courts, an outdoor swimming pool and is set in an area of outstanding natural beauty with its own park and views overlooking the beautiful River Pang. The Georgian manor affords the family privacy and will no doubt provide the backdrop for a relaxing family Christmas.

Over at Sandringham, it's been a particularly difficult Christmas. Very sadly, Zara Tindall lost her second baby, due in spring. Heartbreaking news. Our thoughts and prayers are with Mike and Zara. As you will have heard the Queen and Prince Philip had to delay their plans to travel to Sandringham as they both had heavy colds, and this morning, the Queen was unable to travel to Sandringham for the service - which reporters have described as "unprecedented". Wishing her a speedy recovery.

The royals leaving St. Mary's after the service.

Don't forget Her Majesty's Christmas speech will be broadcast at 3 pm on BBC One, ITV, Sky1, Sky News, and can be listened to on BBC Radio 4. You can also watch it on YouTube.

It's Kate's sixth Christmas as a member of the Royal family. In 2011, the Duchess was regal in a beautifully fitted coat by her independent dressmaker. In 2012, it was her favourite Hobbs coat for service at St Mark's. In 2013, the Duchess opted for her black watch plaid McQueen coat. It was Moloh in 2014, and last year Kate was festive in a green SportsMax coat.

The Duchess opted to repeat the Hobbs 'Celeste' coat she wore Christmas Day in 2012. The £369 brown coat is described: "Wrap up warm in this stunning double crepe wool coat. In a sumptuous seasonal chestnut brown, this coat subtly flares from the hips. It's given an on trend toughened edge thanks to the leather stud fastening, cuff straps and waisted belt". Kate freshened up the piece with the addition of a stole.

Food Fash Fit suggests Kate wore the ASOS Faux Fur Mini Slot Collar and I think she's right.

Below, a closer look at Kate wearing it in 2012 and again today.

The Duchess teamed the coat with her very popular Tod's Pumps With Fringes. Kate debuted the £267 pair in Canada. The shoes feature an almond toe, fringed detailing and metal buckle on the toe, with leather insole.

It looks like Kate accessorised with the Queen's diamond and pearl earrings - they have been loaned to her several times this year.

A closer look at Kate's Mulberry clutch.

How darling did George and Charlotte look today? George looked very traditional in a long grey coat and navy socks while Charlotte was cute as a button in a navy coat. Both looked very pleased with their candy canes as they left church :)

You can watch a video on YouTube.

As we prepare to say goodbye to 2016, I would like to sincerely thank each and every one of you who visited 'Duchess Kate Blog' this year. I am incredibly grateful and very much look forward to following the Duchess with you in 2017. With that, I'm off to help my mum with Christmas lunch.

A very Happy Christmas to you all. I hope it's a fabulous day!

UPDATED: A Royal Turnout for the Queen's Pre-Christmas Luncheon & Kate's New Patronages

We may only see arrival photos through car windows - nonetheless Her Majesty's annual pre-Christmas luncheon at Buckingham Palace is one of my favourite staples on the royal calendar. It heralds Christmas, which just days away, and remains a constant and enduring tradition within the family.

Fresh from yesterday's Christmas party with charity partners the Mix and Heads Together, the Cambridges and Prince Harry looked relaxed as they arrived. No doubt there's been an abundance of last minute preparations before the family travel to Bucklebury where they will enjoy the festivities with the Middletons. Below, we see William driving with Harry in the front seat; Kate sat in the back with George and Charlotte.

A look at Prince George.

And in Mark Stewart's photo we see a glimpse of Princess Charlotte.

Today marks the seventh consecutive year Kate has attended the luncheon, which last for roughly two hours. Kate wore a purple dress/coat with what appears to be a black scarf.

The Queen hosts the fifty-strong luncheon every year for the entire extended family, many of whom are spending Christmas with their own children and grandchildren rather than joining the annual gathering at Sandringham. Her Majesty and Prince Philip are expected to make the journey to the Norfolk estate within the next couple of days, where they will settle in before welcoming their children, grandchildren and other relatives on Christmas Eve. The Queen is said to take attendance very seriously and loves nothing more than a full house palace for the occasion.

Lady Sarah Chatto was all smiles upon arrival.

Princess Beatrice.

Prince and Princess Michael of Kent with their daughter Gabriella.

Lady Helen Taylor and her family.

And Viscount and Viscountess Linley. It's nice to see photos of extended members of the family whom we rarely see.

Buckingham Palace is also a majestic sight; Her Majesty's love of Christmas means it's no surprise to see beautiful festive décor on display.

A look at the finishing touches...

And a simply ideal addition to the Christmas tree :)

We also have news of a significant announcement made by the Palace today. The Queen has given twenty-five of her patronages to other royals to ease the workload in her 91st year. Her Majesty still remains patron of over 600 organisations, but the move is in recognition of the fact she cannot continue at the incredible pace she has throughout her reign. The decision follows the example set by Prince Philip who resigned from a number of patronages when he turned 90.  This has been in the planning for some time and it comes as no surprise to hear the Duchess of Cambridge will take over as patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, better known as Wimbledon. The choice is a splendid fit for Kate, who is an avid tennis fan and loves to spend a day or two at the tournament every summer. It's safe to say this tradition will continue as the Duchess will be there not only as a lover of the game but as patron.

'The Queen has been Patron of Wimbledon since 1952, the first year of her reign, though she is not a tennis fan and has only taken her place in the royal box a handful of times. Paying tribute to her years of service, Philip Brook, chairman of the AELTC said: "We would like to thank Her Majesty for her long and unwavering service to the Club and the Championships during her time as our Patron. We remain immensely proud of her role in the history of the Club and the Championships.
"We would like to welcome HRH the Duchess of Cambridge, who will take up the Queen’s former duties as our Patron, and also recognise with appreciation the ongoing contribution of HRH the Duke of Kent, who will continue his long-standing role as our President."
The Duke of Kent is expected to continue presenting the singles trophies at Wimbledon, but the Duchess may be invited to present some of the trophies for doubles.'

As of publishing, it is not known how many others will be passed on to Kate. I would imagine at least one or two more. Here's a full list of  the patronages. Action for Children and Save the Children UK are two contenders, given Kate's interest in supporting children.

UPDATE: Tying in nicely with Kate's Wimbledon patronage, she will also become patron of the Lawn Tennis Association in 2017. The Lawn Tennis Association's (LTA) mission is to get more people playing tennis more often, and part of its role is to govern tennis in Great Britain, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man by acting as guardians to promote and safeguard the integrity of the sport. More from the LTA:

'The Lawn Tennis Association has paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II following the announcement that Her Majesty will be relinquishing her patronage of The Lawn Tennis Association. Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Cambridge will become patron in 2017.
Speaking about the announcement, Cathie Sabin, President of The LTA, said: "On behalf of all the British Tennis family, I would like to thank Her Majesty for her many years of patronage and dedicated support of tennis in Great Britain. "We were honoured to welcome Her Majesty to open the National Tennis Centre in 2007 and we are enormously proud of her association with our sport. We are excited to welcome HRH the Duchess of Cambridge as our Patron from 2017, and wish to thank HRH the Duchess of Gloucester for her continued and steadfast support as she remains in her role as Honorary President."

It has also been officially announced the Duchess will replace Her Majesty as patron of Action for Children. Founded in 1869 by Methodist minister, Reverend Thomas Bowman Stephenson (the charity recently celebrated their 145th birthday), Action for Children is a national charity that supports and speaks out for the most vulnerable and neglected children and young people. It works with more than 300,000 children, young people, parents and carers each year at 650 services based in the heart of communities across the UK. In February 2015, Kate visited the organisation's Cape Hill children's centre. You can view our post covering that engagement here. An excellent choice in a very important area.

Prince William is taking over the Welsh Rugby Union and Prince Harry has been confirmed as patron of the Rugby Football Union. We'll update if any more announcements are made concerning Kate.

Finally, I've received a large number of queries from readers asking if we'll definitely see photos of the royals attending church with the Middletons on Christmas morning. When William and Kate spent the day in Bucklebury in 2012, a couple of photographers covered it, although the Palace leaned quite heavily on the media not to publish if I remember correctly. Certainly, I do expect we'll see at least a few photos, although it's not guaranteed. Below we see William and Kate leaving St Mark's with the Middleton family in 2012.

With the knowledge many of our readers are travelling and likely will be too busy to check in on the day, I'd like to wish you all a very, very Happy Christmas! I hope you have a wonderful time.

A Festive Kate in Vanessa Seward for Volunteer Christmas Party

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry carried out a very appropriately festive engagement today - joining youth helpline The Mix for a volunteer Christmas party in support of their mental health campaign, Heads Together.

The day marks the Cambridges' final official engagement of 2016. It's a nice one to close the year with, as Heads Together has been a focal point for the young royals this year. The royal trio were all smiles upon arrival. Prince Harry has just enjoyed a romantic few days in London with girlfriend Meghan Markle, which included Christmas tree shopping and a theatre trip.

Meanwhile, the Cambridges are looking forward to Christmas with the Middletons in Bucklebury. Camilla Tominey reports Carole Middleton has been busy planning a Boxing Day shoot at the Yattendon estate in Thatcham, near the Middleton family home.

A young girl from the Harrow Club presented Kate with a beautiful posy.

More on the work carried out by The Mix:

'Life’s tough, we know that. It can throw a lot your way and make it hard to know what the hell to do with it all.
So, welcome to The Mix. Whether you’re 13, 25, or any age in between, we’re here to take on the embarrassing problems, weird questions, and please-don’t-make-me-say-it-out-loud thoughts you have. We give you the information and support you need to deal with it all. Because you can. Because you’re awesome.
We’ll connect you to experts and your peers who’ll give you the support and tools you need to take on any challenge you’re facing – for everything from homelessness to finding a job, from money to mental health, from break-ups to drugs.
We’re a free and confidential multi-channel service. That means that you choose how you access our support, without the worry of anyone else finding out. Whether it be through our articles and video content online or our phone, email, peer to peer and counselling services – we put the control in your hands. You can even volunteer with us too.
We want to be the first place young people turn to get support. Sometimes what you’re told at school or at home just doesn’t cut it. We’re here whenever you need us, wherever you are. We can ensure you have all the best information to make the right choices for yourself.
Life is hard, but support doesn’t have to be. We’ve got this.'

The Mix is passionate about applying a multi-faceted approach to helping young people with issues that often feel too embarrassing or overwhelming to discuss. Thanks to their digital support services, countless under-25s have availed of their help. Their vision is to be the first point of contact for young people, providing them with the knowledge that "with the right skills and opportunities, you can take on anything life throws your way". It's a very empowering and encouraging statement for anyone to hear.

There were several elements to the day, beginning when William, Kate and Harry joined an annual general meeting hosted by youth support service, The Mix, to celebrate the volunteers and counsellors who support people through tough times in their lives.

Next, the royals had the opportunity to see the organisation's work first hand and participate.

The Duchess joined a live online chat about counselling with volunteers.

Prince William and Prince Harry will each join a group breakout session where counsellors and volunteers will share knowledge and receive training on dealing with a range of issues, with a focus on supporting people who are suicidal and helping young people coping with homelessness.

The royals chatted with young people who shared their experiences.

Festive fun in the form of some paper decorations.

A look at some paper chains created by Kate.

Kate appeared to be thoroughly enjoying the activity.

Prince William got stuck in creating a bauble masterpiece.

Naturally, chatter was firmly focused on the festivities with William revealing one very cute little prince is finding it difficult to wait until Sunday morning to open his presents. :)

At the Christmas party reception they met the exceptional volunteers who support people through tough times in their lives.

One of the incredible gingerbread houses the royals helped complete.

The Duchess admired the beautifully decorated houses.

During the party, Their Royal Highnesses kicked off The Mix Annual Awards by presenting the Volunteer of the Year Award to George Yeorghaki. It's been a special year for The Mix and the other organisations involved in the Heads Together initiative; to mark this, volunteers from all the charity partners were invited.

More from Simon Perry's story:

'Volunteer George Yeorghaki also spent some time with the royals. “It was good to see them getting involved,” he says. “We spoke about the stigma around mental health and volunteering and getting more people to volunteer. At The Mix young people can contact us and talk about any issue they want to talk about.” The trio took part in making decorations and building gingerbread houses and met with those doing workshops and talks on homelessness, suicide prevention and counselling. He adds of the royals, “They have total understanding about the issues around mental health and the importance of trying to raise it in the public eye. They have huge passion and understanding of what we need to do to raise mental health up the agenda.”

Charity of the Year 2017, Virgin Money London Marathon - Heads Together campaign partners - are working together to tackle the taboo on talking about everyday mental health, so that people feel they can access support when they need it during tough times without fear of being judged.

A brief video of Kate talking to Donna and James during the Place2Be demystifying counselling session.

A very festive-looking Duchess selected the Cai Floral-Print Jacquard Dress by Vanessa Seward for the engagement. Kate has been experimenting with a host of new labels this year, and Vanessa Seward is a prestigious addition to her wardrobe. Having previously designed for Chanel and Azzaro her eponymous line is centred around chic, minimalist, classic basics. Born in Argentina in 1969, Vanessa grew up in London, later moving to Paris with her mother. Following the 2014 launch of her brand she noted: "It has always been one of my wildest dreams to start my own label."

The combination of red and green makes the dress an excellent seasonal piece - and I'm sure the Duchess chose it with such an occasion in mind. It is described as "cut from a silk-jacquard woven with a subtle pattern. This knee-length design has a button-fastening neckline and side slit pockets. Cinch your waist with the tie-fastening sash". As of writing, the dress is available in limited sizing at Net-A-Porter where it is reduced from $1,245 to $623.

The Telegraph shared their thoughts on the look:

'While Seward might be a new designer for the Duchess, the dress's delicate floral print and midi-length are tried-and tested style signatures. Indeed the last time we saw Kate in a dress like this was the L.K Bennett 'Cersei' dress which she chose for a visit to the Natural History Museum less than a month ago.
The assumption that the dress has been bought on Net-A-Porter.com also implies that this is a piece Kate may have chosen from the comfort of her sofa, perhaps with a little help from her stylist Natasha Archer. Just last week the Duchess wore a cashmere jumper by Iris and Ink, the in- house label of TheOutnet.com, and she has worn several pieces purchased on MatchesFashion.com in the past.
As reports have suggested that the Duke and Duchess won’t be attending the Royal family’s Christmas Day celebrations at Sandringham, and will instead be with the Middletons in Bucklebury, Berkshire, it’s unlikely that we’ll get to see how the Duchess decides to tackle Christmas Day dressing this year. But with this holly-like print and a Santa-style belt, she’s at least offering up some fun-yet-sophisticated festive fashion inspiration.'

The always insightful What Kate Wore noted actress Drew Barrymore recently wore the dress too. Click here to view a short video of Drew modelling the piece.

It's not the first time the Duchess and Drew have shared a fondness for the same sartorial piece. When Kate wore the colourful Tory Burch Floral Mesh Gown in Bhutan, several readers quickly noted Drew wore it that night to the annual Bergh Ball in New York.

Kate teamed the dress with her McQueen Glossed-Leather belt.

Kate accessorised with her very pretty Catherine Zoraida Gold Fern Hoop Earrings.

Kate carried her black Mulberry Bayswater clutch.

And completed the look with her very chic black suede Gianvito Rossi pumps.

As the royals left, one little girl was particularly excited to see Prince William and decided a hug was in order. I think this one wins photo of the day :)

It was a lovely event ahead of Christmas.

We'll see you tomorrow for the Queen's pre-Christmas luncheon :)
