The baby will be styled as:

I was immediately reminded of the poll we held back in early April where you were all asked to vote for your favourite names. Interestingly, you chose Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. Amazing predictions everyone :)
Up until lunchtime royal correspondents were reporting William and Kate were still discussing names and aides didn't want to interrupt the important family time. It was also been speculated they wanted the Queen to meet Baby Charlotte before announcing her name - however this was not the case, as there's also no protocol stipulating the monarch should meet the baby first. No doubt William spoke with his grandmother on the phone when he and Kate made their final decision.
An enormous amount of thought and consideration went into the choice of names for the princess who is fourth-in-line to the throne. Tradition and honouring family names played an important role. Obviously I was very excited to hear the little princess is named Charlotte (my own name as you all know). The name is French in origin and a nod to Prince Charles. A royal source said "the couple simply liked the name" but admitted it was a "happy coincidence" according to Rebecca English.
Charlotte was the 17th most popular name in the UK last year. It's Pippa Middleton's middle name and has royal history too.

More from The Telegraph's article:
'The name’s royal pedigree includes Queen Charlotte, the wife of George III, who bore him 15 children and helped found Kew Gardens. Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital, which is named after her, is part of the same NHS Trust as St Mary’s Hospital Paddington, where Princess Charlotte was born on Saturday in the private Lindo Wing.
Her granddaughter Princess Charlotte of Wales, who married on May 2, the day the new Princess Charlotte was born, died in childbirth in 1817 at the age of just 21. She was the only child of George, Prince of Wales, who would go on to become King George IV.'
The bookies received copious amount of publicity when they featured Alice as the betting public's winning guess. With Charlotte a close second on the day of the birth it seems they'll be paying out quite the sum much to the delight of one royal correspondent :)

Moving on to the middle names - both of which honoured two very special royal women. Elizabeth is a beautiful tribute to Her Majesty the Queen. Elizabeth is also Kate and Carole's middle name.
I know many of you will be delighted to hear William and Kate chose Diana as one of their daughter's middle names. It is a touching tribute to the Prince's late mother and a wonderful way of including the late princess in the celebrations. Without question, I knew William would want his mother's name noted, either with Diana or her middle name Frances.
Tessy Ojo, CEO of the Diana Award said:
'It's wonderful to hear today that the new princess carries the name of her grandmother Diana.'
Diana's brother Charles Spencer expressed his delight via Twitter.

It was quite poignant to see Diana's engagement ring resting on her granddaughter as they left St Mary's Hospital.
A royal commentator noted Diana had the best seat in the house.
Prince George and Princess Charlotte, two perfect names for the young royals.
What do you think? :)
A statement released from the Palace yesterday:
Rebecca English noted in her articles a source said Princess Charlotte is "settling in nicely" and William and Kate are absolutely "besotted" with her.
William also encouraged Kate to wave towards The Sun's royal photographer Arthur Edwards. The Prince has always been fond of Arthur :)

In other news, the Duke and Duchess have been enjoying family time with their children at Kensington Palace. After a much needed night's sleep, William and Kate welcomed visitors to Apartment 1A yesterday. Carole and Pippa Middleton stayed for over six hours.
Sophie from WKW FB quickly identified Carole's blouse as the Mint Velvet Flamingo Print Blouse. The floaty, relaxed silhouette with blouson sleeves is a stylish yet comfortable piece. I know many of you enjoy Carole's style and thought I'd share the ID. Kate is also a fan of Mint Velvet and is regularly spotted wearing their Bibi Plimsolls.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall were all smiles as they arrived at the Palace.
The media have been broadcasting from outside Kensington Palace over the past couple of days. Victoria Murphy shared a photo of the beautiful bluebells in the Palace gardens.
The Palace released these words from Prince Harry on his new niece:
'She is absolutely beautiful. I cannot wait to meet her.'

Royal baby coverage on Saturday was insane and the joyous story was covered globally. One story I particularly enjoyed was a lip reader's assessment of William and Kate's conversation on the steps of the Lindo Wing. A portion from the Telegraph's story:
'The doting mother expressed fears the little princess might be "cold" but Prince William reassuringly said: "No, she's fine, she's good." But she lovingly replied:"Let's take her inside."Despite being used to the public glare, the Duchess still expressed shock and amazement at the crowds gathered to meet her daughter.
"This is nice," she said to William.
"Lots of people out there. Look up there on the top."Waving, she said to the crowd: "Hello". Prince William turned to her at the top of the steps and said: "Do you want to step down...be careful."'
William also encouraged Kate to wave towards The Sun's royal photographer Arthur Edwards. The Prince has always been fond of Arthur :)

We've had numerous requests from readers searching for a 'Repli-Kate of the white and yellow floral print bespoke Jenny Packham dress Kate wore on Saturday. It's not surprising it's proving popular - it was a superb choice.
Below we look at three solid alternatives (with thanks to Jessica) the £149 Hobbs London Cherry Blossom Shift Dress, The floral print Hannah Shift Dress by L.K.Bennett and the John Lewis Emilia Dress. Perhaps the best alternative is the L.K. Bennett Lasana Dress, but it is currently out of stock in yellow. However keep a check on the site as more stock may become available.

It is understood William and Kate will travel to Anmer Hall tomorrow after the Queen meets Princess Charlotte.
We may very well see photos of them leaving!
It's a beautiful name! Diana would be so proud !
ReplyDeleteYes, she would. :) I was thrilled to hear it.
DeletePerfect perfect perfect !!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLovely!
ReplyDeleteLove the name! <3 Charlotte is such a beautiful choice! and They are honoring both the Queen and Diana.
ReplyDeleteI think it is perfect! They walk such a thin line between public and private lives and do it so well.
ReplyDeleteWonderful Choices
ReplyDeletea LOVELY name, don't you think? also, i was right! (but i thought they'd pick frances as a middle name, not diana. but who cares. i got the charlotte part right)
ReplyDeletein addition to sharing a name with a FANTASTIC blogger, the princess also shares her name with my hometown. delightful.

NY (but previously, Charlotte, NC), USA
Wonderful name for the beautiful princess !!!
ReplyDeleteAnd so much fun to think of it as yours too, dearest Charlotte :-))))
Love it! The name is full of history, so happy to have seen Diana... I thought they might be encouraged to shy away from a direct ref to Diana and use her middle name, Frances. I am disappointed Alice wasn't involved... for no reason other than I like it :)
ReplyDelete-Nicole
Charlotte I posted on the other post but missed putting my name......
ReplyDeleteI must say, you have the kindest, gentlest soul and I hope our new Princess will have these qualities. With her parents too she has a fantastic start in this life.
oh dear I'm feeling like a Fairy Godmother :)))
Congrats to the Duchess Kate blog and it's readers. This is exactly the name that your poll predicted!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely thrilled!!!!! This is the exact name I was hoping for and predicted to my sister yesterday!! (I have the text message to prove it!) SOOO happy they honored Diana (and the Queen of course)! It made me tear up to think how lovely it is they are honoring William's beloved mother!!! Oh I couldn't be happier!!! I bet that means SO much to William and Harry especially and to Diana's family and the millions of people who miss her!
ReplyDeleteCould not be more fitting! I love it. I heard a report last night from a Royal correspondent saying he thought Diana would be too much of a burden to carry for the young princess but honestly I feel it's beautiful. What a wonderful way for William to honor his mother as well as her majesty of course :)
ReplyDeleteI think what everyone meant with regards to Diana was having it as a first name would be too big a burden for the princess.... just imagine being "Princess Diana" .... the name Charlotte let's her make her own identity, with a middle name to honour her Grandmother.
Delete- Nicole
Congrats Charlotte!
ReplyDeleteI was so hopeful that Charlotte Elizabeth Diana would be her name and am delighted with the announcement. How fitting that my favorite royal blogger is also named Charlotte!
ReplyDeleteAlso, did anyone else notice a third ring on the Duchess's wedding ring finger recently? I know she of course had her engagement and wedding rings but it looked like a third was added and I am wondering if we know any more details.
Thanks, Charlotte, for all you do!
She has had the third ring for a while. It's an eternity ring :)
DeleteIt was a push gift from William when George was born. Wonder what he will get Kate this time.
DeleteIt's such a cute name and I love that they included Diana. Sweet name. :)
ReplyDeleteWell what can I say: Congratulations, Charlotte!!! ;-))) The little one sure has a lovely namesake, I can say!!! Very suitable indeed!! So you´re absolutely right to be "very pleased" ! ;-))))))
ReplyDeleteA lovely name - but I wonder again: how did people know? Like with George, people who betted on names seemed to know far more than anyone else.... quite funny, isn´t it?
It´s lovely, too, that they incorporated Diana, still, even my daughter immediately said: "Oh I wouldn´t have done that, too many implications, too much "shadow"! " I tend to agree with her. Maybe it would have been better to leave the heritage and remembering of the Princess of Wales to the fact that Kate is wearing her engagement ring....
Still, the name (or the names) is beautiful and "well-rounded"... At least in my humble opinion....
We know because there are only a select few names previously used in the royal family + even less if you consider all the names in use in the family. So it's more of a chack the boxes test than a free answer if you get what I mean.
DeleteYAY! HM the Queen as well as both Prince Charles and Princess Diana are honoured in these names.
ReplyDeleteThe little Princess of Cambridge is your namesake dear Charlotte. How proud you must be! I am sure they are reading your wonderful blog sometimes. I feel so happy for you!
Cheers to all readers,
Monica, France
My son was going to be Charlotte Elizabeth if he was a girl so I obviously love the choices! Lovely tribute to Diana too.
ReplyDeleteYay! Congrats on sharing a name with Princess Charlotte! :)
ReplyDeleteCharlotte's a wonderful name, and I'm glad (though perhaps a bit surprised) to see Diana in there as well.
I literally burst into tears when I just saw the name chosen! What a beautiful way to honor the grandmother and great grandmother!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely and completely perfect. Burst into tears I'm so moved. God bless the little princess and her family.
ReplyDeleteLove it!!!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful name and full of meanings! A great tribute not only to late Princess Diana, but also the Queen , Kate's mother and sister!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all your hard work, Charlotte! I bet HRH Duchess of Cambridge reads your blog ;)
I was close enough on my prediction I thought they would named her Charlotte Elizabeth Diana because well the Cambridges are kind of predictable haha
ReplyDeleteLovely, just lovely name for the new little princess! Perfect selection for you - Charlotte!! You have done a brilliant job with the birth coverage! Your blog is the only place I go for DDOC updates! Cheers xoxo
ReplyDeleteLOVE IT!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great name Charlotte :) ! I love that they put Diana's name in there as well as Elizabeth which was my mother's name.
ReplyDeleteNames are tricky things freighted with meaning and tradition. This one is wonderfully diplomaticas both Charles and Diana who openly longed for a daughter are acknowledged along with HM and other familial connections on both sides as well as other historical figures sharing the names.
ReplyDeleteLittle womanly one, consecrated to God and divine one. Not a misstep anywhere.
Love the name! I immediately thought of you, Charlotte, when I read the news. You should take this as a "thank you" from the Cambridges for all of your hard work :-)
ReplyDeletewell said :)
DeleteOh Charlotte, how wonderful!!!!! The perfect name, honouring the queen, honouring Charles and Carole, honouring Diana and honouring our favourite blogger. It was the name I had hoped for but was afraid might not happen due to the rush of popularity of Charlotte. It's simply simple - and so beautiful. The title has such a lovely ring. And George and Charlotte fit very well together historically. She will probably never sit on the throne but it is a queenly name.
ReplyDeleteLovely name! Just beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThat was exactly my name prediction!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Charlotte for all you do.
Jillian from USA
I was so excited that I had to comment on your last post but I will comment again here because I love the name. I think this is a beautiful name and everyone will be so pleased. Not at all surprised that Elizabeth is the number two name. I think most of us expected it. Thrilled beyond words that Diana is to be honored in her first grandaughter's name. Charlotte :-) is a perfect first name for this brand new princess. It has history behind it as well as being simply a beautiful moniker. I actually didn't think they would use it because of Pippa but it is fitting that it is a family name in both families. PC must be tickled pink as well.
ReplyDeleteGreat name for the princess. I really like Charlotte. Charlotte, NC was named after Queen Charlotte and is still referred to the queen city.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful name, but very Windsor-centric. Grandfather, Great Grandmother, and Grandmother's names all rolled into one.
ReplyDeleteElizabeth is both Kate and her mother's middle name, and Charlotte is Pippa's middle name, so there are maternal influences too.
DeleteThe ancient and noble Spencer family named Diana. Elizabeth is the middle name of Kate and her mother and Charlotte is sister Pippa's middle name. They cover several branches of the family tree with these choices.
DeleteNot at all Windsor-centric. Charlotte is a variant of Carole and is Pippa's middle name; not to mention Elizabeth is Kate's and her mother's middle name.
DeleteI love the name! It really fits the baby and Charlotte is such a beautiful aristocratic name.
ReplyDeleteIt's great that you and the princess share a name ;)
Wooow! Great! Beutiful names... I'm very happy for them :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful 😃 I hoped for the inclusion of both Elizabeth & Diana, meaningful. Congratulations Charlotte!! Be prepared to hear your name ALOT now 😁
ReplyDeleteWOW WHAT A BEAUTIFUL NAME I AM SOOOOOOOO THRILLED! I AM SO GLAD HE PUT DIANA'S NAME IN THERE WHAT A WONDERFUL TRIBUTE AND THIS WAY HIS MOTHER IS ALWAYS WITH THE CHILD!! GOD BLESS CHARLOTTE , WILLIAM, KATE AND GEORGE!!
ReplyDeleteLovely name! And even more fun as it's the one that won your poll! :)
ReplyDeleteI like it. Although I was sure it would be the case, I'm very glad they didn't make Diana her first name. It would be too much of a burden for her to carry all her life. They did the right thing in making it a second name and still honoring her grandmother. I like the addition of Elizabeth as a nod to the Queen. I'm sure HM is thrilled. And Charlotte, how fun for you as well. I'm sure you're tickled pink, as it were.
ReplyDeleteMe too! She'll have enough comparisons to Diana to live up to without sharing her first name.
DeleteI think it's sweet that grandmother, mother, and daughter all share a middle name, and how convenient that it also honors the queen!
Wonderful name for a sweet baby girl! Such kissable cheeks, just like her big brother. I wish the entire Cambridge family a restful first month together at Anmer Hall! :o)
ReplyDeleteThank you SO much, Charlotte, for your excellent posts of the last week. I read them in four different states as my husband and I traveled - always so informative, timely, and fun! You continue to amaze me with all you accomplish, especially while pursuing your own studies. Very, very well done you!
Julie
Such a GORGEOUS name! stunning! Those were my choices exactly :)
ReplyDeletePERFECTION!
ReplyDeleteI love the name...so elegant and such a beautiful nod to William's mother. Charles is also represented because Charlotte is the female version of the name. Just perfect and thoughtful and wonderful! (But, would we ever expect anything less from the Cambridge family?!)
Here's to sweet baby Charlotte. May she live a long, blessed, wonderful life!

A beautiful name for a beautiful baby girl. I was hoping they would honor Princess Diana in some fashion and I'm very pleased Princess Charlotte will carry her grandmother's name with her own.
ReplyDeleteLove it!! So fitting!
ReplyDeleteI love it. Great choice!
ReplyDeleteBest wishes from Germany!
A wonderful name, I love it:-)))
ReplyDeleteYou must be really content Charlotte:-)
Really beautiful name. I'm glad Elizabeth and Diana are both in there. Can't help but feel slightly sad the wait is over, was very exiting and brought the british together! X
ReplyDeleteHello Charlotte - Thanks for the awesome posts and updates you given throughout the Great Kate Wait 2.0 and on the birth of Princess Charlotte! We do appreciate the work you put in ;) I must say I am delighted with the name of the little princess. I still can't get over how adorable and beautiful she is and the pictures of her just melt my heart, I can imagine more so how her parents and family feel about her. I love the names Charlotte Elizabeth Diana and think it's splendid name for a beautiful little princess. I also think it's awesome you now share a name with the Princess of Cambridge. I wonder if they will call her Lottie? Georgie and Lottie seem like cute nicknames.
ReplyDeleteCharlotte is a name that makes a bit of a nod to Carole Middleton as well as to Prince Charles and Aunt Pippa. Both Carole and Charlotte are feminine versions of the name Charles.
ReplyDeleteLove the name! It's really beautiful & classic. I really didn't think they'd include Diana and was leaning more towards Frances in her name as a tribute to William's mother. A very touching tribute to her.
ReplyDeleteCharlotte - I've enjoyed reading your coverage this weekend - hope you enjoy a well deserved break now!
Thank you for your hard work and informative blog Charlotte. How apt and wonderful it is that the Princess bears your name! TRH Kate and William have shown such inclusiveness in naming their little Princess of Cambridge Charlotte Elizabeth Diana. Charlotte is a reference to her grandfather Prince Charles and is the middle name of her Auntie Pippa. It is also a nod to Queen Charlotte her ancestor. The name Elizabeth honors her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II and her grandmother Carole whose middle name, like Kate's, is Elizabeth. Finally the name Diana ensures that the memory of William's dear mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, lives on through his little girl. I believe a lot of thought went into this decision, and I'm sure everyone is satisfied. TRH have paid tribute to everyone in a most respectful and all-embracing manner.
ReplyDeleteCee
Charlotte, I think they named her after you because they (rightly so) love your blog ;)
ReplyDeleteI agree!! 😉☺️
DeleteI'm stunned, but pleased that they gave the princess Diana as one of her names. Well done Wills and Kate!
ReplyDeleteCharlotte, you've done an amazing job covering the Cambridges, thank you, thank you thank you!
Isn't Elizabeth also Catherine's middle name as well?
ReplyDeleteYes, Elizabeth is Carole and Catherine's middle name. Also the name of the Queen Mother, and one of the names of Princess Alice, Prince Philip's mother
DeleteWhat a thoughtful and beautiful choice.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Charlotte!!! I'm so excited for you and for royal fans everywhere! Perhaps the Duchess is a fan of your blog?! I think they gave her a beautiful name. Thanks as always for your outstanding coverage!
ReplyDeleteCheers!
Amy
Love it. Beautiful name for a beautiful baby.
ReplyDeleteA very perfect name. Charlotte is a beautiful name! And Elizabeth seems perfect in so many ways. I was unsure about using Diana, but it fits so nicely! :) Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous name (thank you Charlotte : )).
ReplyDeleteAs another Charlotte, I can say I am also quite pleased :) I love the full name and that it pays tribute to the new Princess's relatives. I am also amazed that the readers of this blog voted for the name, in that order! Perhaps Catherine & William are also followers ;)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous name (thank you Charlotte :)).
ReplyDeletePerfect choice for a beautiful baby (my name is Elisabetta ;))! She's so cute .. and her mammy too! Saturday they were absolutely flawless as they stepped out the hospital!
ReplyDeleteI think it's wonderful that they honored Prince Charles by naming the baby Charlotte. I'm sure she will be doted on by her grandpa. I also think it was a nice touch to honor grandma and great grandma.
ReplyDeleteA beautiful name for a gorgeous little girl. Well done, everyone!
ReplyDeleteOMG CHARLOTTE!! I'm so excited for you, our gracious and tireless admin!!!
ReplyDeleteDidn't I tell you she would be named Charlotte, Charlotte? :)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful name for a beautiful princess.
Hurray to a wonderful wonderful Cambridge family. :)
Charlotte,, This is such exciting news that a princess is named after you! HRH Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana sounds lovely,,,xoxo
ReplyDeleteI was really hoping for Caroline or Adelaide... I do like Charlotte though! And I of course love how Diana is in there as well
ReplyDeleteAlthough, is it a bit strange that Charles Spencer's daughter has the same name? They must have really liked it.
Liz, USA
Through the grace of God, and Kate's unshakeable love for William, William is building an amazing family and family infrastructure for their future. That the Royal family seems to love and enjoy William's
ReplyDeletewife is the true test passed beautifully.
Such a testimony that something new and beautiful can be rise from the ashes of
all that ugly stuff that happened not all that long ago. Love does conquer all.
I agree with your sentiments, however; I would also say this, adversity is God's way of shaping us and we grow when we a) learn from adversity; b) forgive c) practice obedience. It seems to me the adversities of the past have shaped and honed this family (speaking of the Windsor's, Williams generation in particular) and they seems to be living out God's will for their lives. It is so obvious that they are a blessed and are learning from the pass and moving forward. I pray continued blessings on their lives and blessing on you too Anon 16:56.
Deletethank you
DeletePrincess Charlotte, lovely name with nods to history and family. I have to say I'm surprised they chose such popular (or maybe the right word is "expected") names. Charlotte, this is my first time commenting, I want to say how much I enjoy your blog--it is frequently the first thing I check in the morning--and I spent a very unacceptable amount of time on your site on Saturday! ;) All the best from KY
ReplyDeleteLovely names---glad they used Diana; I thought they might not be allowed to.
ReplyDeleteThought the names would come today, then the press could get back to the election.
Doubt if we will see them for some time. Hope they have a peaceful few weeks at Anmer Hall.
Wonderful photo choices! I have tears...
ReplyDeleteCongratulations Charlotte - how fun to share the Princess' name!
ReplyDeleteI love it! It's the perfect combination of tradition and at the same time honoring two very important ladies in the life of this new little princess.
ReplyDeleteLove, love, love it. Nothing more to say, it's perfection.
ReplyDeletePeace! and Congratulations!
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I sort of wished that they didn't have the name Diana at all. Not being thoughtless or anything, I just think its too much for the girl. If you've read the articles, the press are already doing "spare" articles on her and comparisons and such.
ReplyDeleteThey were already doing that before her name was known. I think in the end they probably chose Diana as a middle name because Diana won't be there to watch her granddaughter grow up and in this way she can be a part of her life.
DeleteThe family could not have picked simply a neatly packed name with a weight of gold that brings antagonism into one positive unison as well as honor over ten members of their living family members and the ones that had passed on.
DeleteWho cares about the media in this case? They might be royals and historical figures, but they are still human beings, royal or not. When it comes to their duties and responsibilities, it is something else.
Some members of the media may or may not have been in the shoes of experiencing the aches and pain of broken relationships, the loss and grief of losing a loved one and one’s precious name, the public exposure of your parents business days and days out growing up, the burden and responsibly of fulfilling what you are born for, that may or may not be your choice, the sweet surrender of love and its promises.
For me, if I went home after work in 1997 and found the TV bombarded with the news as the minute by minute report of the suspense for hope of Diana’s life filled the screen and I was frozen in front of the TV for days on ward between my daily life, what took place this weekend up to Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana’s name was released, was all great irony of waiting and waiting as if in labor ( as it was for hope of Diana’s survival for life that August night), but in 2015, with sweet revenge, joy and relief. Whatever this child’s future, William with his wife started an excellent first chapter that is permanent.
C.E.D is also a spring baby with the closest holiday as Easter. God has his ways in his own time for everything.
Charlotte,
Thank you for the live blog, before and after. I hope your name sake will become a great fan of yours and vice versa.
Perfect choice of names! They made everyone happy. It reminds us again what an important part Princess Diana's memory plays in the lives of her boys. Many happy years to HRH Charlotte Elizabeth Diana!
ReplyDeleteAw I love it. I wanted it to be a boy called George last time, and a girl called Charlotte this time. I really should have took a bet! Lovely that they are honouring the Queen and William's mum.
ReplyDeleteRebecca
Beautiful name for a Princess!
ReplyDeleteI also want to point out that Elizabeth is also Carole Middleton middle name as well as the Duchess of Cambridge. It's a perfect name to honors so many women in the little princess life.
I'm a long time reader but first time commenting on the blog and I just want to thank you, Charlotte, for your hard work and wonderful blog.

Absolutely stunning name. Perfection. (My eldest daughter is also a Charlotte!)
ReplyDeleteI thought they would avoid Charlotte since Earl Spencer named his daughter Charlotte Diana, so thought Alice was more likely. However, Charlotte is a gorgeous name and the addition of Elizabeth and Diana could not be better. I do think William and Kate have shown that they favor first names that are royal in history but not currently held by members of the royal family, thereby giving their children a sense of individuality. (And my question is: how do the bookmakers always KNOW? They were right about George, and now about Charlotte. Do they have a secret inside source?)
ReplyDeleteI think Charlotte was second to Alice, so they didn't exactly. It's not that hard to guess the 2/3 names that are most likely to be given though. You actually summed it up pretty well. They choose traditionally royal names that are not currently held by members of the royal family and there's a limited number of those. I think people thought Charlotte was more likely than most other names because it also honours Prince Charles and Carole Middleton. Personally, I thought Charlotte and Victoria to be the most likely since Alice just sounded too 'Alice in Wonderland' to me.
DeleteThe absolutely perfect pick!:) Charlotte thanks for the split screen photos. I was struck by Kate's whole Presence & Regal Carriage, as she emerged from the Hospital Doors. I don't know if this will make sense to anyone else,.... but I felt a Shift had occurred, as I looked at her, I also see it in n the split screen. I know longer see "Kate Middleton" Former University Girlfriend & Former Commoner.... I see Catherine, Future Queen of England. It's quite striking as I view both photos. She is Regal & has Truly Grown into her Role! Well Done all around!
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Becca
Becca, I'm glad you mentioned it because I too have noticed the transformation in Kate. In fact, on Saturday evening I re-played the clip of her on the steps holding Charlotte several times, and, like you, I was struck with how polished and regal she appeared. Gone was the unsure young woman of two years ago and in her place stood someone unflappable and confident who had assumed her role as wife and mother of two future monarchs, William and George. She rose to the occasion on Saturday for what was a perfectly timed, well- coordinated and smoothly executed process and appeared to be so self assured and unfazed. So, yes, I am finally seeing her as Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, growing into the Royal she's meant to become.
DeleteCee
Last time she was a first time mom :D she was emotional and confused.. this time she's an experienced young mother :)
DeleteCamilla
I just love it! I really didn't care for Alice and I bet Harry calls her "Charlie" - wouldn't that be too cute? She is an adorable baby and I am so thrilled for William and Kate. Don't forget - Kate's middle name is also Elizabeth. What a wonderful weekend it was watching all the events unfold. A very big thank you to you Charlotte for such a wonderful job of updating us all so fast. Best wishes to Princess Charlotte!
ReplyDeleteI had hoped for Alexandra, since there are more nicknames; Charlotte is okay, but the nicknames are not pleasing. It also sounds rather old fashioned and "stuffy" to me. But in time that may change. I think it goes well with Elizabeth and Diana. But Alexandra Elizabeth Diana would have been terrific. But . . . they didn't ask me and it's not my business. Congratulations to them! Everyone will grow to love Charlotte I'm sure!! :-)
ReplyDeleteMy youngest sisters name is Charlotte and we call her lolly or char for short. I don't think those are too stufy :)
DeleteAlthough I find it easy to use Charlotte as a full name. If Catherine has always gone by her full proper name then it would not be surprising if Charlotte did also. Ali
DeleteHi Charlotte! I am an avid reader of your blog, although I have never commented. I think that the name chosen for the new princess is perfect. I think it is a lovely tribute to both sides of William and Kate's families, especially for Diana. I am hearing that people are disappointed that Diana came after Elizabeth, and felt it should have been before Elizabeth. However, I really don't see it as an issue. I think it is a lovely choice, and I am thrilled for the royal couple. Thanks for your wonderful blog. I enjoy reading it from over in the United States.
ReplyDeleteThanks Charlotte, what a perfect ending to three great days.
ReplyDeleteI love the names, they sound lovely together.
Now back to real life ;-)
I love the name ! It's just perfect .
ReplyDeleteBeautiful name, and a tribute to the Queen, and William's Mother.
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Charlotte for your post.
ReplyDeleteYou must be very proud, and being French, I' m proud too, that the little Princess has been given a French name!
O hit te nail in the head. Just love her name. I'm So excited!! Thanks Charlotte and congrats to the wonderful new princess
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful photo of Diana and her boys.....the sapphire ring on her finger.....Harry's socks and shoes remind me of George....they look so very happy.....what nice thing to commemorate the day.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful name for a beautiful baby. So happy they included Diana.
ReplyDeleteI really like what Catherine and William called their daughter. Very nice names.
ReplyDeleteI would just like to add, Charlotte, that the babys first name not only honours Charles, but also Pippa Middleton, whose middle name is Charlotte, and Charles Spencer's youngest daughter, Charlotte Diana.
ReplyDeleteFurther, Elizabeth does not just honour the current Queen, but also Elizabeth I, the greatest Queen England has ever had, and HMTQM, and Kate, whose middle name is Elizabeth, and Carole, whose middle name is Elizabeth. It pleases me that, this time round, the Middleton side of the family got a look in.
JC
Congratulations, Charlotte! I really like their name choice. And have to admit I am glad Alice wasn't a winner. 😊
ReplyDeleteBeautiful names for a beautiful princess!!!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the post, Charlotte. And what a beautiful name!
ReplyDeleteI know you're saying that Charlotte is the feminine version of Charles but I'm thinking it might have something to do with aunt Pippa. Isn't her middlename Charlotte as well? I think William and Kate will very likely choose her as godmother.
...Pippa or they simply liked the name. If it was for Charles, they could have used the name for George. My take, anyway. :)
DeleteI have a comment about precious little George, too. He is adorable--and his hair looks adorably straight to me--which means that I want to revisit that picture of "Kate" holding a curly-haired "George" the Sunday before Charlotte was born--when we all have time to catch our collective breath from all this excitement. I am becoming convinced that it was a fake.
ReplyDeleteHI Lynn - I had the same thought as well this AM - photoshopped - also for those posters who said that a 2 yr old was no 40-50 pounds ...
DeleteI am also sooo glad to have Diana's name included. Congrats to William and Kate!
@Lynn Georgia USA: I was thinking the same thing.....
DeleteHis hair has been combed and slicked back for this occasion. He does have curly hair as can been seen in the pictures with the sunglasses and nanny.
DeleteIMO... considering George's appearance at the hospital, it isn't unreasonable to believe that they cut his hair ahead of the baby's birth.
DeleteI think George's hair is naturally wavy unless it's been combed back and tamed. He also looks like he's had a haircut since those pictures (with the sunglasses and in the park being held by Kate) were taken.
DeleteMy two cents. My son has thick wavy blond hair, and I always wet, combed, and sprayed it for special occasions and pictures. It would really be Prince George; he probably has his mama's hair :) Alison
DeleteThank you for the post, Charlotte. And what a beautiful name!
ReplyDeleteI know you said that Charlottes is the feminine version of Charles, but am I the only one thinking this is a nod to aut Pippa. Isn't her middlename Charlotte? I think they very likely will choose her as a godmother as well.
So much news :D
ReplyDeleteAlthough it wasn't my fave I like the name and it suits her really well. And I'm very gond of names with significance.
I saw in the newspapers some more pics and in my opinion, Mr and mrs Middleton look way too serious for someone who's going to meet their newborn granddaughter
I honestly feel like: they are probably sick of having to wade through oceans of people to get to their grandbaby, thus the stern faces.
DeleteDid you see some of the additional photos? Like the one of Michael above? There are some of them smiling, I think the DM just happened to print several that made it look like the Middletons were not happy.
DeleteWould you be smiling while driving through a crowd of photographers & other members of the media? I for one would be concentrating on driving, as they're obviously doing.
Delete.... And they didn't have police cars in front and back of them so they *could* smile for the cameras.
DeleteRemember - the pictures are only a fleeting second in a larger time frame. Taken out of context a picture can say anything. I would like to suggest looking at a video before trying to judge.
Delete"Just happened to"? LOL Of course the DM would choose pictures they could use to cause trouble! The photo above, according to Getty Images, was taken as Michael Middleton was leaving KP. Note the jacket; he entered wearing a sweater and shirt. The entrance must have been tricky to navigate on the way in, and his pleasure in his time with his granddaughter carried him through cheerfully on the way out. Nice to see his smile.
DeletePerhaps I am in the minority but I didn't really care for the yellow dress Kate wore. The yellow was very nice, but for me the design of the print itself was just so so. She looked fabulous overall though!
ReplyDeleteSuch an adorable and perfect name! I think she'll grow into that one quite nicely :)
ReplyDeleteCharlotte, you must be over the moon! Do you know where we can mail congratulatory wishes to TRH?
Thank you for all the work you've done on making this blog my go-to for all things Kate!
It is a very beautiful name for a very beautiful little girl! Wishing the new family of four all the happiness in the world!
ReplyDeleteNow the question becomes will they have another one? I am so happy they have both a boy and girl now, but I'd be lying if I said I don't want them to have more kids and am curious what they would name them considering my favorite name choices have been chosen.
ReplyDeleteThe last couple in the immediate royal family to have more than two children were the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh. (Some of the Kent family have as many as four children.) I read long ago that they are very conscious of overpopulation. I have also read that Diana said Prince Charles would not agree to have a third child even though he wanted a daughter.
DeleteI could see them having more. With a nanny in place and the households set up I suspect that they will find the transition with Charlotte much easier. Ali
DeleteMy instinct tells me they will have one more. :) W&K are close with their siblings and they will want their children to have a similar support system. Even more important in their unique circumstances.
DeleteRegarding Charles and Diana, I believe it had more to do with the state of their marriage than anything else.
I think I got it right!!!! yea!!!!!! yessss!!!
ReplyDeleteI predicted right here on your popular blog
CHARLOTTE ELIZABETH DIANA!!!!
i'm sooooo over the moon!!!
This is a beautiful choice. I am amazed at how this couple seems to effortlessly gets it right time and again. A lot of thought goes into whatever they do. They are truly inspiring. I wish them lots of happiness. Both their children are adorable! Lize
ReplyDeleteI like Charlotte and it was my number one prediction for them and I voted for it in the poll. Apart from me linking the names, I think it’s a great choice since it honours so many family members and no one can feel left out. I think I’d make the same choice if I was them.
ReplyDeleteCharlotte honours Prince Charles and Carole Middleton and it's Pippa Middleton’s middle name
Elizabeth honours Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mum and it’s Catherine’s and Carole’s middle name
Diana of course honours William’s late mother
I guess poor Michael Middleton is the only one who didn’t get a nod, lol. I was surprised when George didn’t get honoring middle names like Charles or Phillip, but I guess Alexander honours the Queen since Alexandra is the only of her names that has a male form.
Charles and Philip may have preferred Louis, the name of Earl Mountbatten of Burma, who was Philip's uncle and Charles's honorary grandfather. It is also William's last name.
DeleteA peal of Cambridge Surprise Royal has been rung at Westminster Abbey for the princess.
ReplyDeleteCan you describe the peal? Was it named for Princess Charlotte's birth, or was it a traditional peal?
DeleteNever mind describing it, I see it's quite long and varied and complicated. One source said it took three hours to ring for Prince George's birth. Here is an example from Canterbury Cathedral:
Deletehttp://tinyurl.com/lswwly7
Cambridge Surprise is a standard method. The term 'royal' denotes that the peal was rung on ten bells.
DeleteGod Bless them all- what a wonderful choice of names for this new little princess of Cambridge. AND Charlotte, thank you again and again for your wonderful blog and information. I hope you never tire of informing all of us on these great people. xo
ReplyDeleteGreat name :) so fitting for a princess. You must be so excited Charlotte! Love your blog :)
ReplyDeleteKathleen from Chicago
THIS is what I predicted on May 2, 2015 I am soooo happy!!
ReplyDeleteLekheeka2 May 2015 at 18:54
They all look very beautiful! loved the dress even though it's the same silhouette as last time. I agree that the princess looks very much like Kate's side of the family whereas George looks like his paternal side.
I think the baby will be named
CHARLOTTE DIANA ELIZABETH
or
ALEXANDRA FRANCES ELIZABETH
lol. I had Elizabeth Caroline(or Charlotte) Diana. :-)
DeleteAdd my enthusiastic vote for the name too. It's a lovely feminine name for a beautiful baby. I voted for it both times!
ReplyDeleteI am SO OVER THE MOON! Perfect, perfect, perfect!!!!!!!!!!!!! It made me cry when I saw Diana's name! I love that all the names have meaning in their families too. I love that this couple's main focus is always family. A nice value that everyone in this world could stand to put first!
ReplyDeleteLove it, love it, love it!
Charlotte, you must be over the moon too, being your name and all! SO cute.
I also think that if the Duchess does read news and things about herself, it wouldn't surprise me at all if she actually read your blog. Thank you for all the hard work. Your blog always uplifts me and it has been quite a year for me.
PLEASE, when you get married, share a picture of yourself with us, we'd love to see it!
absolutely....ditto Tammy from CA
DeleteCharlotte is also Pippa's middle name
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice way to include the entire family.. Pippa's middle name is Charlotte...of course then we have Prince Charles for which Charlotte is the female version. Elizabeth is not only the Queen's name but also Carole and Catherine's middle name. Then of course Diana for her grandmother. Such a nice way to incorporate a lot of people.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE the name! Especially since it also recognize the Middleton family. Charlotte is Pippa's middle name, and Elizabeth is for the Queen but also is Kate & Carole's middle name. Perfect name for a perfect Princess!
ReplyDeleteI commented late on the previous post, so I thought I'd post here, too. I love her name! So perfectly traditional, yet modern at the same time. I didn't know if William would use Diana or opt for Frances, wary of reducing the comparisons to his mother, but the fact that they used Diana actually made me tear up. I can't say that this name was a surprise, though. It seems so perfect, and that it makes sense. With Catherine and her mother both having "C. Elizabeth" names (and if course the Queen), Charlotte being a variant of Charles, Carole, and Pippa's middle name, it seems like the perfect choice... And Diana, of course. So lovely!
ReplyDeletePrincess Diana soul would be so happy to know about her grand-daughter's name. Its a blessing when u leave behind kids who miss u.
ReplyDeleteIf I may, I'd like to contribute a small point of information: While Charlotte and Caroline are both feminine versions of Charles, CAROL(E) is not a shortened form of Caroline. It's an unrelated French name meaning "sing of joy." You may have heard them being sung at Christmas. :-)
ReplyDeleteSo Charlotte, other than sharing similar pronunciation, is not a tribute to Carole. I think it's a fine name for the baby princess either way, of course. I'm just finding the repeated inaccuracy a little wearing. Thanks for your indulgence!
Carole comes from Karl, being a name of person; carole as a music has another root, it comes from caraulare, a Latin verb for dancing.
DeleteThe name Carole is definitely a variation of Carl - Charles.
DeleteCamilla
And now it's picture time!
ReplyDeleteThe last Princess Charlotte---daughter of George IV was married on May 2nd 1816 to Prince Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-a brother of Queen Victoria's mother and Uncle to both Victoria and Albert/
ReplyDelete.Charlotte died after delivering a still-born son in Nov 1816 and was mourned by the British people much as Diana was.The Obstetrician in attendance later shot himself
Prince Leopold became the first King of the Belgians.
The ill-fated obstetrician actually shot himself while in attendance at another confinement, which must have been pretty distressing for all concerned!
DeleteThat's very interesting!
DeleteI love these names. I am so pleased that Diana is included. It is such and honor that they used Charlotte our beloved Admin's name. They must be fans of your blog. Blessings to Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana of Cambridge. I wish William, Kate, George and Charlotte well. Thanks for all your hard work Charlotte.
ReplyDeleteLove the name! Duchess Kate just looked radiant coming out of that hospital. Wow - hoping they have lots of rest and downtime together in the coming weeks/ months! Heather C Detroit, MI
ReplyDeleteLike so many I am thrilled with the name. Very pretty and great homage to the family.
ReplyDeletePerfect choice. I wanted Charlotte and Elizabeth; using Diana as the third name honors the late Princess of Wales without burdening Princess Charlotte with the expectations and tragedy of her grandmother's short life. Can't wait to see the adorable clothes.
ReplyDeleteSo delighted that they picked my #1 choice!
ReplyDeleteA question for anyone who can answer, i know that because of the newest legistation this new baby can now be called a Princess instead of Lady. In the past, would she have always been Lady, or eventually when her father became King, would she also change titles?
ReplyDeleteShe is now Princess Charlotte of Cambridge. When (and If) William becomes Prince of Wales, she will be Princess Charlotte of Wales
DeleteWhen he becomes King she will be THE Princess Charlotte.and then possibly Princess Royal, after the death of the present Princess Royal--but that is not automatic.
Thank you, but I was wondering, BEFORE this legislation that allowed her to be a princess now, she still would've likely been one later on, right?
DeleteThrilled and excited at the names-acknowledging mother, grandmothers, great grandmamma and grandfather Charles--that's how it should be. Congratulations again to the Duke and Duchess and welcome to the world Princess Charlotte. Let me say this, being given Diana as a name is not and never will be burden. Diana is Williams and Harry's mother always and forever and as such they will always honor her memory, despite what the any one thinks. The talk about a child with her name will carry a burden is a fallacy, pure and simple.
ReplyDeleteAll the names are lovely, just lovely.
And Charlotte our blog leader thanks again for your hard work.
Charlotte was my #1 choice, too and I did want Diana in the name without it being a burden to the sweet baby girl. I think as the third name it won't be much of a burden. I don't even remember off the top of my head what Harry's other names are. Do you think they will give her a nick name like Char or Lotte? If we are to read into this baby's character from how serene she was at her introduction to the World she will be much more calm than George!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the happy post & what fun Charlotte that you & the new princess share a name. William & Kate have covered all the bases with this name!
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised HM approved the use of Diana's name in naming the child. Elizabeth is a nice touch as it reflects both HM and Carole Middleton's middle name.
ReplyDeleteWhy should have the grammy of William disapproved his will of giving his own mother's name to his first daughter? I beg your pardon, but it sounds just nonsense.
DeleteI love the name!!! It's perfect.
ReplyDeleteI would also like to correct people though - there really is no tribute to Kate's family. There is overlap with the name Elizabeth and Charlotte referring to Carol and Kate's middle names and Pippas middle name, but this is just a coincidence. Make no mistake - the baby is named after Charles, the Queen and Diana. I am disappointed they haven't really paid tribute to Kate's family. But the name is perfect the way it is. Perhaps they should have had one of George's names as a nod to Kate's family. Or maybe they'll have another child! Who knows?!
I thought someone posted that some of the Middlelton women had Elizabeth as a middle name? Catherine herself? I only read once a reference to the Carole/ Charlotte connection. Another poster that referenced this said Carol/e was not related to Charlotte in name origins. I have no idea but the posters explanation of the name Carol rang accurate. SO I assumed either the couple really did just pick ut names they liked or that they went for the Elizabeth connection and the Charlotte to Charles connection. Or they had doe historical names to choose from and they just chose what they wanted, including Diana. SO maybe Charlotte cause they liked, Elisabeth for obvious reasons, and Diana for obvious. Charlotte may just truly be "I love that name" choice." Ali
DeleteI'm so happy with the name! I predicted Charlotte Elizabeth Frances so I was almost there :P Love the fact that the name is special for both sides of the family and has so much meaning. It's been an amazing few days, very, very happy we have a Princess with a beautiful name and I'm looking forward to seeing her and Prince George grow up together :)
ReplyDeleteI have to do a double take every time I see the princess' name written as 'Charlotte'. We have spent so long referring to her as the royal baby! I think Kate and William did a beautiful job naming her, choosing classic, meaningful names. I am so happy for them!
ReplyDeleteToni
I still have to do a double take when I see the princess referred to as Charlotte. After months of talking about the royal baby it is so fun to call her by name! I think Kate and William did a lovely job of naming her, choosing names that are classic, timeless, and full of meaning. I'm so excited that HRH Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana is finally here!

ReplyDeleteIn the pictures Will & Kate look tender and proud. I absolutely love the name. "Besotted" -- I guess the little girl magic is acting on them already :) That's a great word! We Americans don't have it and it really says what it is. Love the name Elizabeth -- was my mother's name -- always thought it had a regal sound to it.
ReplyDeleteHello from the States and Tucson, Arizona. Blueskygal.
I have to say I am quite touched by our universal excitement with and approval of the choice of names.
ReplyDeleteSo much consensus dear fellow readers : )
And I have to join in: The best, most considerate, most beautiful name. Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.
I am getting teary-eyed for no reason .... seriously, this has to stop!
i do love the name too charlotte all i should call you as princess i love they tribute lady di at some point charlotte is classic name earl spencer was so pleased they name before her sister
ReplyDeleteI absolutely love the name Charlotte Elizabeth Diana! A beautiful and elegant name honoring several family members. I think it's wonderful that they used Diana. A lovely tribute and honor for her to carry her late grandmother's name. I thought it was very touching that the reporter said Diana had the best seat in the house. :)
ReplyDeleteI love the meaning of a name, so I thought I would share....
Charlotte - Womanly
Elizabeth - Oath of God
Diana - Divine
Congratulations again to Will and Kate on the birth of HRH Princess Charlotte of Cambridge. I pray a life full of joy, happiness, love, and blessings for the Cambridge family!
Perfect name, beautiful baby. She is a true Sleeping Cutie :)
ReplyDeleteAll the grandparents meeting together: the best answer to those ill-tinking people LOL
How lovely to curl up on the lounge at the end of this Tuesday and to read such a wonderful story from our own Princess of the Blog, Charlotte. Thank you
ReplyDeleteour own Queen of the blogs, Charlotte :) :) :)
DeleteLove the name Charlotte. "Katukayo" means you share the same name in our dialect. Charlotte, you're "katukayo" with the new princess!
ReplyDeleteThank you for all your lovely comments! It is a real treat to share the same name as the princess :)
DeleteHopefully we'll see photos of some sort today, I expect they'll travel to Anmer after HM meets Charlotte.
