Tonight it's all about what one would undoubtedly describe as the Duchess' favourite garments - coats. Kate has a stellar selection of bespoke, designer and high street coats. She favours this look above all others and debuted a number of stunning new additions in 2014 as well some chic repeats!
We'll take a look back in chronological order which means first up is the gorgeous green Hobbs London 'Persephone' trench coat the Duchess wore for the St Patrick's Day parade at Aldershot. The £279 garment was a stunning choice and the shade of green worked very well with Kate's colouring. This is one I'm hoping to see repeated in the future.
Kate joined William and Harry for the wedding of friends Lucy Meade and Charlie Budgett in late March - repeating her favoured M Missoni blue tweed coat for the occasion.
In May, Kate chose the 'Athena' wool jacquard coat by Scottish designer Jonathan Saunders for a day visit to Strathearn. The stripe wool piece is from the 2013/2014 Collection and originally retailed for $2,555. It features a notched collar, single-breast pocket, full-length sleeves and flap front pockets.

The Duchess of Cambridge marked the 70th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France wearing her Alexander McQueen cornflower blue belted coat. The Duchess debuted the piece during the tour and hit the right note, choosing to wear it shortly afterwards for the commemorative event.
For the Order of the Garter ceremonies, the Duchess brought back her shiny Christopher Kane coat - a piece she first wore for the London 2012 opening ceremony. The icy-blue silk satin piece divided opinion, and I've never warmed to it. It shall be interesting to see how it fares in the vote.
Kate brought back another tour coat - the Erdem 'Allie' - for the official launch of the Tour de France at Harewood House. The flawlessly cut wool crepe "bright grass-green" piece features a tab detailed waist.
For First World War commemorations in Belgium, Her Royal Highness looked regal in a bespoke Alexander McQueen coat dress with a peter pan collar and drop waist.
The Duchess selected another bespoke McQueen piece to officially greet President Tony Tan Keng Yam of Singapore and his wife - her first official state role as a member of the Royal family. The bespoke grey plaid garment was a stylish yet appropriate choice for the event and it's a piece I expect we'll see once or twice in the future.
Kate was beautiful in blue for a visit to Wales with William in November. The Matthew Williamson wool-blend coat is crisply tailored with four pockets carefully placed to flatter and emphasize the waist.
Kate was sombre in the Alexander McQueen wool flared coat for Remembrance Sunday. The double-breasted garment is a staple black coat with an exaggerated collar and button embellished lapels.

Kate packed several coats for her first trip to New York and arrived in style wearing Séraphine's 'Marina' maroon and black tweed coat. This piece is the only maternity garment in today's poll, it will be interesting to see if Kate opts for more maternity pieces for the duration of her pregnancy.
The Duchess looked chic in GOAT's 'Washington' coat for a visit to a child development centre in New York. The heavy-weight black crepe coat is edged with beige trims at the neckline,cuffs and back. It originally retailed for £680 at Matches.
One of the most important aspects of the trip was the Cambridges visit to the National September 11 Museum. Kate's choice of Mulberry coat garnered attention for all the wrong reasons with many feeling the cerise pink was simply the wrong hue for the occasion.
We expected to see Kate select a US-based designer at some point during her trip to the Big Apple. The Duchess honoured her host country in style by wearing the Tory Burch 'Bettina' coat. The metallic tweed piece offers a tailored fit and took Kate from a reception with the Clintons to her first NBA game.
We always see the Duchess in a gorgeous festive coat on Christmas Day and this year was no exception. Kate chose the 'Turpin' coat by British brand Moloh for the walk to St Mary Magdalene Church.
Looking back, Kate has added several keepers to her already fabulous coat collection. There are so many I love including the Hobbs 'Persephone' and the Matthew Williamson wool-blend coat, it's hard to choose! As always, I very much look forward to seeing your choices.

DeleteI had quite a few favorites this year! I am a huge coat lover so it is difficult to choose just 1 but ultimately I chose the Mulberry Cerise coat! I am an American and the 9\11 attack are tragic and were a terrible and heart wrenching time but it was 13 years ago and I certainly Was not offended at the color of the coat! It was a museum visit and a dreary day the color was lovely and certainly made he pop in the outside pictures. Kate always makes sure to dress appropriately and I feel that this was a fine choice! I expect if it had been worn the day before for the visit to the Northside Child Development Centre it would have received many more votes (it's very early yet, but thus far). I imagine those who felt it wasn't the best choice for the nature of the event may not have voted for it?

DeleteI voted for the Matthew Williamson Wool Blend Blue Coat. The color and cut looked great on her. And the Moloh 'Turpin' would be my second favorite. I love the "period" look of it.
ReplyDeleteThe Moloh Turpin coat has a lovely period feel to it. The brand drew inspiration from the eighteenth century when creating it. It's a gorgeous piece! We all thought it was bespoke Katherine Hooker initially.

DeleteThis was a really hard poll for me to answer. I have two that I think make the DoC look very well. Even though I could only vote for on in the poll I am choosing two to comment on. One before she started to show in her pregnancy and one after she started to show.
ReplyDeleteI know the grey plaid coat dress by McQueen was met with mixed reviews. I like the plaid pattern a lot and I think the v-neck is very flattering on the DoC. I feel that this is a good length on her, both the length and sleeve length, and the skirt makes it seem a little more youthful than a more fitted skirt.
The other jacket I loved on her is the Seraphine coat from NYC. The color looks amazing with the DoC's coloring. I like the texture of the material because it makes the coat more interesting and makes it "pop" a little more. I am hoping we see more maternity pieces on her during this pregnancy.

To be completely honest I was torn between the cream Alexander McQueen, the Goat Washington, the black McQueen for Remebrance day, the Seraphine Maternity, and the Mulberry Cerise which I ultimately chose and voted for! I guess I wanted to play devils advocate here and vote for the coat many didn't vote for because I loved the coat and did not agree with the reasons people had for why she shouldn't have worn it! Anyway Kate has sooooo many beautiful coats I can only dream of owning but maybe one day! A girl can dream right?!
DeleteAt first I loved the cream McQueen but the more I look the more I just can't get over the odd pleating under her breasts. What was the aesthetic the designer was going for there? It just looks awkward, like trying to salvage or hide something. If that area was done differently the coat would be a winner for me.

I voted for the cerise coat Kate wore at Ground Zero. One of my criteria is that a garment must be perfectly tailored as well as beautifully designed. (Therefore why is the off white McQueen ahead right now??) The Mulberry coat is almost perfect. It is not a color I could wear, but it is striking on Kate. My second choice is the Williamson blue, so soft and nice and well made. I also love the Moloh brown tweed from Christmas. I am only sorry the Michael Kors coat from Australia, and the pale grey McQueen she wore out there on Easter are not in the mix. Those two coats are beautifully made and fit Kate perfectly. Once again I am struck by the divergence in quality among the McQueen coats. Some are so perfect, others are slapdash in execution.

DeleteI agree, Anonymous 5:31, that the McQueen cream coat is not finished well or "slapdash in execution." The Remembrance Day McQueen had buttons moved that didn't look good, and I haven't seen a full shot of Kate in the Remembrance McQueen.

Very hard to choose, but my vote goes to the green coat she wore for St. Patrick's Day. Beautiful cut and shade. I prefer jewel tones on her rather than pastel.

So bummed I couldn't vote for more than one coat! Is that new this year? I was figuring out my favorites as I read the post and then I had to choose one, only one!! Actually, it wasn't too hard. Before I even started reading I knew I liked the bespoke Alexander McQueen with the Peter Pan collar. I could never wear that coat because of the full "skirt" on it , but it looks fabulous on Kate's slender figure. I did like the cerise pink coat for its vibrant color and I liked the maternity coat she wore from the airport to the Carlyle in NYC. I also liked the light blue coat Matthew Williamson coat but I did not like the black scarf or tights with it. Hopefully we will see it again without the black accessories. Oh-oh and I really loved the Tory Burch Bettina coat. The whole outfit was so chick for a ball game and meeting Beyonce.

ReplyDeleteI loved and voted for AM white/Peter Pan collar. That was where she looked picture perfect to me. This year I did not like her choices that much. Some of them had simply horrible material or the way she wore it didn't sell the coat too well. Finally she started wearing maternity garments which is new;)

ReplyDeleteMy favorite coat is definitely the purple Seraphine she was wearing when they arrived in New York, for several reasons. First, it was absolutely perfect for the setting. Very classy, very New York-y with the sparkles, etc. And second, it was the first indication that with this pregnancy, she wasn't going to stick to ill-fitting non-maternity clothes like last time. I just wish that we had gotten to see it for longer. Unfortunately, I can't think of many events that this coat would be appropriate for, repeat-wise. It's a little too sparkly for day-wear, and Kate doesn't usually do evening engagements at which a coat would be appropriate. Hope I'm wrong!
Overall, Kate owns a LOT of GORGEOUS coats (and that's just for this year!). I almost wish she'd wear coats a little less. Sometimes they seem a little heavy for the engagement at hand, and it seems like she has this stock recipe for dressing that she always sticks to. She seems to be especially coat-happy at UK engagements, which I guess isn't shocking given the weather. I do wonder if the repeated flashing occurrences have led her to rely on coats even more. If so, that's unfortunate, because there are certainly other solutions. But I suppose coats are the easiest ones!
That was my pick as well. I'd have voted for the grey McQueen in Australia if it had been on the table. IMO, that was her loveliest outfit this year.

ReplyDeleteAnon @ 05:31 must have been reading my mind; I also voted for the Mulberry cerise coat, and my second choice would have been the Wiliamson blue. I too have noticed the variation in quality-- style, material, and execution in the McQueen coats. For example, the grey check coat was too tight through the chest to the waist, and buckled when Kate sat, and the cream?/white? McQueen coat, although it had a looser and lovelier design, with a skirt less prone to catch the wind than the grey check, was rather sloppily sewn under the bust. Altho the rest of the coat looked perfectly finished, this seam looked anything but. Downright queer.

I had a tough time picking just one, I would rather put together a top 5 lol. But I settled on the Mulberry Cerise mostly because the color is fantastic and something I didn't expect from her. Seriously, 2014 was a great year for Kate's coats.
ReplyDeleteA wonderful collection of coats. It made for a very difficult choice. I chose the McQueen grey check because I think it a very good look on Kate -- although I wish they would use buttons as those covered plackets never lie quite flat. Kate wore a very similar coat the last day in Australia, also an ideal shape on her.
ReplyDeleteLove a lot of her coats though. The black McQueen is very smart indeed, the green Hobbs was a great look and the Molah Christmas coat was also a contender for me. If I were given a pick of Kate's coats, it would be one of those three. All very wearable.
Some of her coats are quite princessy. I liked the shiny Christopher Kane for that reason. The winning coat at the moment is the McQueen she wore in Belgium and that was also an elegant look that looked truly royal.
Not so keen on the green Erdem -- or that other green coat she wore in Australia, or any of her New York coats.
I agree that the shape of the grey check from McQueen and the Kors blue jacket have a skirt that is very flattering on her body. I also think the fuller skirt makes it a little more "princessy". I also would have done something else with the plackets.There are coats in the poll that are better put together and are tailored better to her body but for some reason I love the grey check. It isn't too juvenile or too old.
DeleteI could not consider the grey checked McQueen because of the poor fit. The plackets with snaps don't work with fitted coats, including the black watch at Christmas 2013 and the off white that is ahead in the poll. The Kors with buttons fit perfectly.

Hi Anon 17:01. I believe that you can only vote once. My hunch is that there are many more readers, than post. I know for myself, that I've followed Charlotte's Blog almost since the beginning & only just recently decided to post. Charlotte has created such a High Quality Blog, that I can't imagine that she wouldn't want her Polls to be accurate. At least that's my opinion. :)
DeleteI can't understand why the McQueen coat with peter pan collar would be leading the poll. This was my least favorite of the choices. In my opinion, that collar style and the flared, pleated skirt are far too "little-girly" for a woman in Catherine's position. Coupled with the odd seam across the chest - this coat completely failed for me.

Happy Poll Day Everyone! so hard to choose just one coat to vote on, but after narrowing it down, for me it all comes back to #1 Red Striped "Athena". I loved it when i first saw it and still love it more than most. I am a big fan of the coat look and wish i had her collection. my runners up were #2 Seraphina "Marina" maternity coat she wore in NY, the colors and cut were fabulous on her. #3 the Matthew Williamson Blue with the pearl buttons. My #4 choice would be the M Missoni, believe we have seen this several times but it always looks great and i really like the looks of the dress under it! I was also a fan of the Christmas coat. Its becoming clear the longer i think about it i pretty much liked them all, If i had to narrow down the one i liked the least it would be the plaid McQueen and the cream peter pan color McQuenn. ReplyDeleteGreat post Charlotte! I loved all the entries, but I pick the Mulberry coat from the NYC visit. It is IMO the best fitted, color and style of the lot. I was surprised to see that the McQueen Peter Pan collar was most voted for.....so many people hated it in the comment thread IIRC....something about it seeming unfinished. I loved it and it always makes me happy when she wears House of McQueen. I also really love the Hobbs London coat.....gorgeous and a perfect style for our beloved Catherine.

ReplyDeleteOn another topic I see that two engagements for Kate have just been announced a visit to an ~art Room opening on Jan. 15th I think this is the same one she was unable to attend at the beginning of Oct. and attendance at an event connected with Foster Carers on the 16th Jan, an unexpected surprise.
It is a nice surprise. Can't wait to see what she wears. Wonder if we will see a repeat of the maternity coat she wore in NYC.

ReplyDeleteI believe she uses extensions, at least some of the time. There are two photos I can think of that show weaves. Whoever does her hair does an amazing job, I wish I had even her hair lushness from when she was not married and didnt have a stylist!

Only mention of seeing extensions that I've heard of was when she held that engagement for Charles. And if I remember correctly they released it was a scar from a surgery she had done in childhood.

DeleteI think her hair was thicker pre engagement. Or she had more "volume" from blow drying it herself and not having as much product in her her. My guess is her hair is loaded with products then dried and ironed.

DeleteNow a day of engagements have shown up on the 19th. I think there are a few reasons for these engagements. Firstly, since she will be on maternity leave and such I think they want to get a lot of engagements in before. Also the Andrew stuff (but these engagements sounds like they have been planned for a while). I also think the holiday reason. But she would have done them either way I think. The engagements themself are not the royal spin, just the timing of them.

No, she is being ragged on for planning her engagements just before hightailing it to a beach holiday, after having a month-long staycation, so that she won't look as bad. This is a regular pattern with her.

Well, no. After her maternity leave ended, and before she became ill again, she hardly worked - a very small small handful across the three months of May-June-July, and nothing at all in August. So even when she is healthy, well, not on maternity leave, or anything, she still doesn't work much.

Well, no. With George, she barely worked in April, absolutely nothing in May, that Trooping stuff in June and one boat ceremony, then nothing after that. She essentially started her mat leave 10 weeks before George was due.

I was thinking spin for the negative stories of the week from Andrew to the BBC postponment, and thinking I would want to get the most eye-catching member out to provide some positive publicity. In the Daily Mail, there is also a clumsy defense of Camilla, claiming she is one of the most popular royal, but giving no real statistics -- clearly a puff piece inspired by the video.

DeleteThe art room event may be an appearance to counteract the negativity as it is a rescheduled event from the time she was ill. The fostering event seems to be a planned event so it may have been in the works for some time. I wonder if she plans on taking this on as a patronage as it seems to tie in with the royal foundation and her work with the youth.

ReplyDeleteAaagh, so hard to choose! I had to go with the McQueen Peter Pan Collar, because it's one of my all-time-favorite Kate looks. But I really, really loved the Seraphine, too! So many great coats this year.

Charlotte thanks for the poll. what a fantastic selection of coats. I could have voted for any number of them but chose the Mulberry cerise. My grandmother voted for the Moloh Turpin as she loves the cut & period feel of this coat.
ReplyDeleteMy 3 favorites for the year are the Hobbs London Persephone, the McQueen Peter Pan collar coat dress, and the Tory Burch Bettina tweed coat but I had to go with the Persephone as my top choice. Kate really does have an amazing collection of coats!
ReplyDeleteLike other readers I am surprised at the coat that is so clearly the leader in the best coat stakes, I thought it was too young looking and although stylish in a way not really right for someone of Kate's age.
ReplyDeleteI see that yet another engagement has been announced for Kate. Three local one's in the Kensington area a charity dealing with families in need, la visit to a new Acadamy and the opening of a new leisure centre none of these connected to any of her charities.. I wonder if like the past this is a burst of activity & then she will go to ground, I hope not
How many coats does she have total? Does anyone know?
ReplyDeleteThere were only a few coats I liked this year, it was a bit of a boring year, style-wise, for the Duchess.
ReplyDeleteThat being said, the Turpin coat is simply gorgeous, so that got my vote.
I wish we had more than one vote. I voted for the Tony Burch but also love the Mulberry Cerise. Really looking forward to next week with two engagements. Yippee!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe Duchess looks amazing in most anything. There are so many beautiful coats to choose from BUT the McQueen coat w/ the Peter Pan collar and drop waist is simply perfection to me.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if someone has mentioned this. But on the New Years list of people that will be honored this year (you know, knighthoods, CBEs etc) some people connected to William and Kate are on it. It was someone important (like adviser or something) that I can't remember who.... Also Lola Rose (Not Lela Rose the dress maker, but Lola Rose that makes jewellry. Kate has worn some of it pre engagement). Also Dickson Poon (if I remember correctly), the guy that donated money to the wing William opened the day the pregnancy got announced :P
ReplyDeleteThank you for the poll Charlotte. I'm glad you didn't include the tour looks from this Spring- it would be too overwhelming for me to choose between all those options. It was a hard choice, but I had to go with the the black and purple (sorry Seraphine, I don't see maroon) coat worn for the New York City arrival. I loved the sparkle - it looked great with all the camera flashes going off - and the styling was just perfect for me (plus we got a great view of the baby bump). I loved the Hobb's green trench for St. Patrick's day, but I'm fairly confident I'll have another shot to vote for it in the future - maybe St Patrick's Day 2016? I know there can be some disappointment when Kate chooses to repeat a look, but I would love to see the Matthew Williamson powder blue coat again. I adored this coat from the moment I saw it on Net-a-porter. It went right on my pinterest board of dream coats and I was thrilled a few weeks later to see Kate wear it. However, I was very disappointed in the styling. I hated the color combo of powder blue and chocolate brown. I loved the red scarf worn for the runway show and wish Kate had paired the coat with a brighter color. Kate's black boots were definitely an improvement over the model's yellow ones though.
ReplyDeleteIf Kate's two upcoming engagements that have nothing to do with her charities do not end up becoming new patronages, then I'm inclined to think that they are indeed to counteract recent negative publicity due to Prince Andrew and Kate's engagement numbers, as well as a possible upcoming Mustique trip. They do then seem like recently planned engagements in response to new negative publicity. But, it is possible that these are foreshadowing new patronages for her. So I'll reserve judgment for now and say that I'm happy she's doing more in January than usual.
ReplyDeleteGenerally royal engagements are prepared well in advance and only announced closer to the engagement. The increase in January engagements is most likely because of the upcoming birth of the new child. Anyway why does one always have to judge over such trivial matters of royal engagements when the world is facing such awful atrocities as what happened in France, Australia, Canada, etc, etc.

Charlotte, I love a fun poll! I always love seeing Kate's coat wardrobe. There are SO many lovely ones to choose from. I was interested in seeing how the Christopher Kane would do.... That one is my favorite! I think it is classy and beautiful! Seeing Kate in person at the Order of the Garter last year, it really is pretty in person. I know you said you hadn't warmed too it. :) I loved it when she wore it to the Olympic reception at BP, Olympic opening ceremony, AND at Windsor Castle! I would love to see it again!
ReplyDeleteI also loved the Matthew Williamson and the cerise pink Mulberry, but we can only vote for one! I wonder what maternity wear Kate will don over the next few weeks? All her coats in New York were lovely! Looking forward to Kate's coats in 2015!
It will be nice seeing Kate out and about at the upcoming engagements. 2015 will be another great year for the Cambridge family with the baby coming! I'm REALLY looking forward to that poll....boy or girl, date, time, weight! It will be here before we know it! :)
