The Queen wanted to say thank you to Team GB's Olympic and Paralympic heroes. For Duchess Kate, (as a London 2012 ambassador she attended a vast number of events during the games) it was a chance for her to meet the athletes again and congratulate them on a summer of sporting success.
Kate enjoyed talking with the women's hockey team. The Duchess is a talented hockey player herself and played hockey with the Team GB ladies in March, no doubt she was eager to catch up with the team.
Charles and Camilla were scheduled to attend but had to cancel last minute due to weather disruption. Charles and Camilla are spending the evening at the première of the latest Bond movie Skyfall (is anyone else incredibly excited to see this? I cannot wait :)). Interestingly, Kate was recently voted 'Britain's Dream Bond Girl'. I would have loved to seen the Cambridges attended the premiere.

The athletes wore their official Team GB formal wear, which included a special pocket inside for their medals. Paralympic gold medallist Lee Pearson was among the first guests to arrive and said to The Mirror:
'I was driving down here and reminding myself that it had been a home Games and that made it a bit more special. Coming here to Buckingham Palace to celebrate a home Games is also special because so many of the Royal Family came out to watch us'.
Team GB canoeist Jon Schofield shared a photo of the Palace after the reception.

Kate looked elegant in a black ALICE by Temperley dress with sheer billowing sleeves decorated with pink flowers and a flowing, dropped waist skirt that falls just below the knees. There is a bow at the front waist, perhaps not a necessary addition to the garment? The dress is thought to be a bespoke piece and the general consensus appears to be people either love it or dislike it entirely because of the busyness. Kate's straighter hair style tonight is very chic.
A look at the back of the dress.
The silhouette of the dress is very similar to the folksy style Esmeralda Dress (with thanks to Carly) It is quite possible Kate saw the dress, loved it and had it a bespoke version made to suit the Palace reception. The Esmeralda is available in white for €455 and black for $292.50 (55% off).

Kate wore her Jimmy Choo Cosmic Pumps. The five inch suede pumps are available for €525.
The Duchess accessorised with her floral diamond bracelet.
You can look at a video from the reception at ITV.
The reception was a resounding success and most importantly the athletes had a wonderful time mingling with the royals. Kate appeared to thoroughly enjoy the event and chatting with the athletes. Recently we've seen the Duchess choosing more bespoke pieces, something I expect will continue in the future.
