It's Time To Vote For Kate's Best 2018 Gown & Evening Dress & Latest News!

Good evening dear readers,

With Prince George and Princess Charlotte on half-term from Thomas's Battersea and Willcocks Nursery, the Cambridges are not expected to undertake engagements this week. It is thought they are either spending the week at their Norfolk retreat Anmer Hall or planning several days away on a family holiday. We know William and Kate love to ski and in 2016 they took George and Charlotte to the French Alps, marking the first time the children had played in the snow. Perhaps they'll opt for a similar break this week?

Speaking of the Cambridge children, Kate was spotted enjoying a walk in Kensington Gardens with Prince Louis late last week, following the 100 Women in Finance gala. Kate was casually dressed in a quilted jacket, skinny jeans and her New Balance x Sweaty Betty trainers.

Vote for Kate's Best 2018 Gown

With a quiet week upon us, it's a great opportunity to finally get through our 2018 polls. In our first end of year poll, we asked you to vote for Kate's Best Day Dress of 2018; today it's Best Evening Dress and Best Gown. Kate's first gown appearance last year came during the Scandinavia tour. The Cambridges concluded day one in Sweden with a black-tie dinner. The Duchess opted for the opulent gold print Erdem Stephanie Gown. The dress featured jewel-tone florals, an Edwardian high collar, button-down bodice, bell sleeves, a trimmed skirt with a gathered hem, and a detachable belt. The polarizing piece proved an unpopular choice. I felt it simply didn't photograph well with the shade looking more mustard than gold in photos. The lower portion of the skirt combined with several busy design elements left many feeling this one was a sartorial miss for the Duchess.

Just days later in Norway, Kate arrived at the Royal Palace in Oslo wearing a flowing blush Alexander McQueen gown with cape detailing and crystal flower embellishment around the neckline. The regal gown was a beautiful maternity piece and a very regal choice for the most formal occasion of the tour.

Back in London, it was a dark green Jenny Packham gown and dazzling emeralds for the BAFTA Awards. The flowing design featured a v neckline, an empire waist and a black ribbon.

With Kate on maternity leave, we didn't see another gown event until the Dutch State Banquet in October. The Duchess chose a kingfisher blue mermaid style gown by Alexander McQueen. The white-tie event saw Kate wear the Royal Family Order publicly for the first time.

Kate brought back her show-stopping teal Jenny Packham Aspen gown in November for the Tusk Conservation Awards. This one has been a reader favourite for years, it was a delightful surprise to see it again.

In a welcome change, the Palace decided to release images from inside the white-tie Diplomatic Reception last year. The event is one of the most glamorous on the royal calendar and Kate looked every inch a princess in a gorgeous bespoke Jenny Packham gown. The shimmering piece featured delicate beading and sheer overlay, cap sleeves and a sweeping full skirt.

Vote For Kate's Best 2018 Evening Dress

Now to our second poll! The first option on the Best Evening Dress poll is a rather divisive one (Yes, it's begins with an E....). For a glamorous evening at the Fotografiska Gallery in Sweden, Kate wore the blue velvet Erdem Christina Devore dress. The piece features a mock neckline, long sleeves with flared cuffs, banded waist, A-line silhouette, flounced hem and nude silk crepe de chine lining. The dress was another unpopular piece from the designer and led to many a suggestion Kate retire his pieces from her closet.

Less than a month later, Erdem was redeemed when the Duchess wore the very pretty floral lace Suzi dress for the Commonwealth Fashion Exchange. The Suzi is finished with scallop edging around the ¾ length sleeves, neck and hem and soft gently frilled detailing at the waist. I thought it a very stylish choice and an excellent maternity wear option.

Duchess Kate selected the Orla Kiely Margaret Viscose Print Smock Bib Dress for the Victorian Giants exhibition. The £490 dress is described as a "slim fit, long sleeved dress with smocked front panel feature, velvet ribbon collar, invisible zip back opening, suits all shapes". Very sadly the Orla Kiely fashion empire collapsed just six months later. I've been a great fan of her designs for years and hope to see her launching new projects in the future.

Kate made a splash in Erdem for her first visit to new patronage the Victoria & Albert Museum. The designer won over many a critic that night when Kate arrived wearing the Iman off-the-shoulder boucle tweed dress. I loved the added pop of burgundy in the belt and shoes.

The Duchess was elegant in an asymmetric black dress by Roland Mouret for the annual Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall. The black wool and stretch silk dress features a distinctive asymmetric neckline, 3/4 length sleeves and the designer's signature gold zipper.

For the Royal Foundation dinner, Kate brought back her popular Preen Finella Dress.

    Hi!
I love these posts so much! It’s always fun to take a look back at the previous year’s fashion and it’s doubly exciting when we can look at maternity and regular looks.
Also, thank you for the J Crew sale and sweater tip! I stopped reading the post, logged on to the J Crew site and did a little damage! Mine is now on its way! :-)
    Have a great week, everyone!

  2. I went with the pink McQueen and the Erdem from the V&A. I wasn’t super thrilled with any of the evening gowns from 2018, but I went with the pink from Norway because I thought it looked the best of her new gowns. I loved the V&A Erdem. She looked great.

    1. I voted for these two pieces as well, Anon23! I loved Kate's McQueen look in Norway and the Boucle Tweed dress by Erdem is just gorgeous!
Thank you for the fun post, Charlotte.
PS. I love seeing Kate walking in a casual attire, she must enjoy a normal stroll in Kensington Park with her little one so much, after all the Baftas and banquets etc! :)

  3. What struck me with this poll is the challenge of dressing well when pregnant--even with bespoke pieces as an option. Kudos for succeeding at all. While not all of her choices were dresses I would choose for myself or even for her, I was impressed with how lovely she looked every time.

  6. I was torn between the blush pink gown, the green gown at the BAFTA's and the ice blue gown at the Diplomatic Reception... I eventually chose the ice blue gown mostly because it had a tiara to go with it :)

For me, Kate's best evening dress was the Erdem with burgundy accessories, hands down. She had a fresh new glow on her after Louis' birth and she just rocked that dreas like nobody else could!

  7. Yay, more votes! Always fun!

But I'm most hyped about the skirt suit find. I remember a few years back that I spent about a week actively looking for this suit and e-mailing brands and such for it so it's almost surreal to me that we finally have an ID!!

    1. Haha! I’m glad the mystery is solved...it only took 12 years :P I’ve always liked that suit & she’s had it for so long.

    2. Hi Rebecca:
I thought to ask you since you are very loyal to Duchess Kate's blog. I had asked some posts back where our friend, Julia, Pippin's mom, has been. Maybe I missed a post in the past? Hoping all is ok with her and that she is missed.

    3. Oh Carrie. Now that you say it, I can't seem to remember hearing anything about her. I know she was pondering taking a step back from royal watching so maybe she just needed a break! I'm with you in hoping that everything is alright!

      Delete
    4. I think Julia may be taking a break for various reasons, one of them being the current political situation in the UK. She seemed upset about the whole thing in her last couple of comments. I miss her insightful comments too and hope she'll come back soon!

    5. I agree with you Zora, Julia's comments are very much missed. Hope all is well in her world. That would go for royalfan as well, she hasn't been commenting either of late. cc

    6. Yes, I miss royalfan too! And Erika, Eve from Germany and others. I suppose that's life, though. 😢 🙂

  8. I just came across some pictures from Kate attending Carole’s birthday party on February 2nd! Kate wore the red maxi dress she also wore in Berlin, I’m so happy to see that dress again! Unfortunately the pictures reminded me of the media harassment in the earlier years of William and Kate’s relationship.

My favourites from last year are the Orla Kiely and the McQueen Blush gown!

  9. I went with the teal Packham gown and for the evening dress the tweed Erdem. But having all these evening gowns just reminded me of how IN GENERAL I'm not crazy about Kate's taste in evening gowns. The teal Packham and the white off-the-shoulder McQueen at BAFTA are exceptions rather than the rule. In general I find a lot of her evening gowns fussy and too prom dress-y.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree. Her evening gowns tend to be too princessy for my personal taste, but she usually looks good in them.

      Delete
    2. I agree, Ivy Lin.
My favorite evening gowns of hers tend to be "sexier" dresses like the ice blue Jenny Packham she wore to the Natural History Museum back in...2014, maybe?
I especially dislike her State Dinner dresses. They always feel a little over the top in a "what would the pretty, pretty princess wear to the ball" kind of way.

  10. I went with the Jenny Packham gown from the Diplomatic reception because it exudes class and princess to me. Then for the evening dress it is the tweed Erdem (I never thought that I would love an Erdem dress). To me, this is one of my most favorite looks on the Duchess ever.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Ditto! :) The tweed Erdem from the V&A is hands down one of my fave looks of hers. And I loved the princessy JP gown from the Diplomatic Reception - so pretty.

      Delete
    2. I agree Jaime and voted for the same two. I was torn between the McQueen blush gown and the Packham gown for the Diplomatic reception, Kate looked every bit a princess in both, but think the addition of the tiara made the JP gown seem even more elegant and stately. The tweed Erdem is a great look for Kate and one of my new favorites. Love the dress and Kate in it, everything about it exuded style and confidence. cc

    3. P.S. The black Roland Mouret is an honorable mention on my list. If there were a little black dress poll, this would be at the top, not that we get to see what Kate wears under her black coats, but if we did and this were one of them, it would make high marks for me. I love Kate in Roland Mouret and this is an elegant basic classic that every woman should have in their closet. It reminds me of the movie Hope Floats, and the dress Sandra Bullock pulls out of her mother's closet and wears....timeless. cc

    4. CeCe, the black Roland Mouret is an absolutely timeless, classic look & I love his designs on Kate, also. I wish she would choose his designs more often.

And now may those terrible Erdem dresses from the Norway/Sweden tour RIP forever. I forgot how much I despised them lol!

I chose the last Packham she wore, with the cap sleeves, tulle, and crystal detailing. It was very much Kate, but complimented her figure so well and was so princessy. For the evening dress, I chose the Erdem tweed, mostly because it was just quirky enough to be cool and she carried it off well. I still don't like his designs and hope Kate mostly steers clear of them.

    3. I love those dresses.

    4. Those two Erdems go on my Mount Rushmore of most hated Kate outfits. Lol

  12. I voted for two Erdems: the Stephanie and the Christina Devore. Love the out-of-the box-ness of both. So not typical Kate which is refreshing. Great bohemian feel for both dresses.

    1. I actually liked those two dresses as well for the same reasons you mentioned (though I didn’t pick them in the polls!). They’re both different & I think Kate has always had a penchant for bohemian outfits, even in the pre-engagement years. I love that she chooses items that we wouldn’t think she would normally pick.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you Anon and Kiwi Gal. While I didn't vote for those two dresses, I liked them and think the dresses are representative of the fact that Kate does indeed have a style that is exclusively her own, regardless of what we may think or wish she would wear. Sometimes conservative, sometimes bohemian, sometimes eclectic, but she dresses for herself and she's not afraid to show us. Looking back on photos, whether or not we agree or like her choices, one of her signature looks is how she is always poised and pulled together. cc

    3. I agree CC. Add to that that Kate has the knack of dressing to the occasion. It is a gift!
The Bafta gown was stunning but she wouldn't wear it to a diplomatic reception. Nor the norvegian MacQueen to the Conservation awards. I really like how appropriate she always is while keeping her own elegant style.

  15. Looking at the pics I've always felt that even she doesn't like that mustard Erdem gown. Her posture, her face... she seems really uncomfortable. On almost all of the other photos (especially when wearing gowns) - she is just shining, looking radiant and you can tell she's aware of it and enjoys all the attention around her. I voted for the Diplomatic Reception gown - she really looked like a fairy tale princess that night.

    1. I always had the same about her feelings for the mustard Erdem. It looked like she put it on and realised the dress really didn't work. I don't know if it was just the dress or she (and tiny Louis!) weren't feeling too good that night but she looked very uncomfortable.

  16. There were a mix of hits and misses for me with Kate's fashion this year. It was nice to see she got the Royal Family Order. I think we all knew it was coming soon but it was nice to see she finally received it. I loved that we got to see photos from inside the Diplomatic Reception. It is a switch from arrival only photos and I, personally, hope it continues. I love seeing the full length gowns - the Jenny Packham was beautiful.

  17. I really hate to say it but I dislike every dress, some intensely. The only ones that come close to pretty are the red Preen and the blue fishtail McQueen, but both have issues. She needs a stylist, her first years and first pregnancy wardrobe we’re impeccable, flawless. Then came That first Erdem dress and it all went off the rails.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Although I was not overwhelmed with her fashions, I am actually starting to appreciate that having the latest fashion is not Kate’s top priority. Kind of like the Queen. Not overly fussy. Less superficial.

    ReplyDelete
  19. One thing that strikes me in looking through these gowns, dresses is how often she did try something different. Regardless if one likes her choices or not, I love that she steps out of her "norm" and goes for something different several times a year. Love it.

  24. Fashionwise, I just loved the Erdem Boucle Tweed dress, and it seems to have been the start of some great looks in my opinion. I have some old favorites, like the Chanel dress in Paris, and this year she has worn some to rival. I also love when her hair is dark rather than light brown, so hope she returns to that.

  27. I saw that in Hello Magazine. They were swimming at a Norfolk hotel pool, possibly an indoor one . Apparently, the Cambridges stayed in Norfolk and did not travel. A royal source was also quoted as saying that engagements usually aren't scheduled during half-term for royals with school-age children. With the Sussex mini-tour over the Cambridges are expected to announce engagements, work activities soon.
