Glamorous Kate in Show-Stopping One-Shoulder McQueen Gown for BAFTA Awards

It was a glamorous, star-studded night for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge who joined a host of famous faces for this year's BAFTA Awards at the Royal Albert Hall.

William and Kate walked the red carpet upon arrival.

The Cambridges made their joint debut at the event in 2016 for the 70th awards ceremony and attended again last year. To the delight of royal fans, it very much looks like it's becoming an annual calendar fixture. Prince William has been President of the Academy since 2010, and both he and the Duchess have supported BAFTA’s charitable activities by attending events across the charity’s learning programme, including Young Game Designers and BAFTA Kids events, as well as others related to building cross-cultural collaborations with the creative industries in China.

Ahead of the ceremony the Palace said: "BAFTA is a world-leading, independent arts charity that brings the very best work in film, games and television to public attention and supports the growth of creative talent in the UK and internationally. While BAFTA is well-known for celebrating excellence and championing creativity through its awards, it is a charity committed to identifying talented individuals, and making sure they receive the encouragement, professional support and advice that will enable them to succeed, regardless of their background or other circumstances."

They were greeted by BAFTA representatives.

Of course, the prestigious BAFTAs are a highlight during awards season, with winners on the night often considered front-runners for the Oscars. The night is an opportunity to honour the best British and international contributions to film.

The BAFTA award trophy is a mask designed by American sculptor Mitzi Cunliffe. When the Guild merged with the British Film Academy to become the Society of Film and Television Arts, later the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, the first 'BAFTA award' was presented to Sir Charles Chaplin on his Academy Fellowship that year.

Best Film contenders this year are BLACKkKlansmanThe Favourite, Green BookRoma and A Star is Born.

The Duke and Duchess enter the hall.

A terrific shot from BAFTA.

A great shot of William and Kate.

Best actress nominee Glenn Close with Thandie Newton.

Leading actor nominees Rami Malek and Bradley Cooper.

Leading actress nominee Viola Davis.

Olivia Coleman was nominated for her performance as Queen Anne in the Favourite. Rachel Weisz also stars in the film.

Colman will succeed Claire Foy in the role of Her Majesty the Queen in the next series of The Crown. Foy was also in attendance tonight.

And supporting actress nominee Amy Adams.

Prince William took to the stage to present the Fellowship Award to Thelma Schoonmaker. The award is the highest accolade bestowed by the Academy to an individual in recognition of an outstanding and exceptional contribution to film, games or television. Ms Schoonmaker is an American film editor who is best known for her work with director Martin Scorsese on movies including Raging BullGoodfellasThe Aviator and The Departed.

More on Schoonmaker's illustrious career from The Guardian:

'While Schoonmaker, as a triple-Oscar winner, can hardly claim to be unsung, she does argue that women’s crucial role in film-making has been underestimated.
Listing Dede Allen, Verna Fields and Anne Coates, the artistically powerful Hollywood editors of the 1920s, 30s and 40s, as further evidence of a strong tradition that has continued with the late Sally Menke’s editing of Quentin Tarantino’s films and in the work of Alisa Lepselter for Woody Allen, Schoonmaker suggests women first became involved in the industry as assistants in film laboratories.
“They were there spooling film in the labs, back when it was just one 100ft roll. Then Griffith, and [Sergei] Eisenstein in Russia, started cutting and editing their films and directors needed someone to splice the footage together. These women already knew how to handle film,” she said. “Then, as soon as editing became a more important job and men saw it was possibly going to be paid better, they started pushing women out,” said Schoonmaker. “I have a feeling it became a plum job after the second world war, when men came back from fighting.”
Schoonmaker first met Scorsese by chance on a summer film course in New York and he began to teach her his craft. “Marty felt he could trust me to do what was right for a movie,” she recalled. “My artistic development came through him. We don’t fight and it has been a wonderful collaboration.”

While Roma won Best Picture, The Favourite reigned supreme at the awards. More from The Guardian:

'Olivia Colman’s performance as the unstable, self-pitying and hilariously bad-mannered Queen Anne won her Bafta award success on Sunday evening – one of seven awards for the 18th-century comedy The Favourite. The film was easily the biggest winner at the glitzy Royal Albert Hall ceremony, picking up prizes including including best British film, best production design, best supporting actress, best original screenplay and best costume design.
“We are having an amazing night aren’t we?” said Colman in her speech, which met with a standing ovation. “We are going to get so pissed later.”

A video from the night.

After the show they met a host of winners. William complimented Bradley Cooper on his musical performance in A Star is Born and discussed Lady GaGa's involvement with the Heads Together campaign with the actor. The video also features footage of Kate chatting with winners Spike Lee and Olivia Colman.

The Duchess with Leading Actor winner Rami Malek.

In 2016, Kate selected a bespoke Alexander McQueen gown with a floral print and tiered skirt. Last year, it was bespoke dark green Jenny Packham with show-stopping emeralds.

This year's gown is not only my favourite BAFTA choice for Kate, it's one of the most beautiful she's worn to date. The Duchess looked stunning in a Grecian-style, ivory one-shoulder gown by Alexander McQueen. The gown is fabulous in photos, however, it really comes to life in video when one can see the light, whimsical flow of the fabric in motion.

A closer look at the floral shoulder detail.

As noted by several readers, the gown bears notable similarities to the pink one shoulder gown Kate wore for Prince Charles' 70th birthday. I expect they are both by the same designer. The Duchess styled both looks similarly with up-dos, statement earrings, a dark eye and stronger lip.

Laura from UFO No More posted a similar McQueen design Kate's gown may be based on.

It was a new glittering pair of Jimmy Choos for the Duchess.

They are the Romy 100 Silver and Dusk Blue Fireball Glitter Dégradé Fabric Pointy Toe Pumps (with thanks to Laura).

The Duchess accessorised with a statement pair of Princess Diana's earrings.

Diana wore the striking earrings on numerous occasions throughout the 1990s. They often added a finishing touch to black-tie and white-tie events. It seems their provenance is unknown; they were likely a private gift. As you can see Diana's pearls are larger; Kate likely had them modified. Below, Diana wearing them at a banquet in Korea.

More from The Telegraph:

'Princess Diana left her jewellery to her sons, in order that their future wives may wear and enjoy it. And, true to her wishes, the Duchess of Cambridge attended the BAFTAs wearing a pair of diamond and pearl earrings from the collection of her husband’s late mother.
The earrings feature a double curve of various cuts of diamonds, with a cluster of marquise-cut stones in the centre, from which hangs a single pearl. Princess Diana wore the earrings with sizeable, silver-toned South Sea pearl drops on several black-tie occasions.
She wore them with the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara, a piece the Duchess of Cambridge has also borrowed on several occasions, at a banquet for the Japanese Emperor Akihito in 1990, and again at a banquet in South Korea in 1992, when she paired them with the Spencer tiara she’d worn on her wedding day. The earrings appeared also during a visit to Pakistan in 1991, and at a gala at the Palace of Versailles in 1994.'

Kate added another touch of sparkle in the form of the Queen's Quatrefoil bracelet. More from Her Majesty's Jewel Vault: "The wide diamond bracelet features multiple diamond quatrefoil motifs, the four-lobed design popular in architecture, art, heraldry, and elsewhere. Each quatrefoil outline is filled with five individual diamonds." The provenance of the piece is unknown and it's hardly been worn. Kate's worn it several times.

And a white clutch thought to be by McQueen.

We'll see Kate twice on Wednesday. The Duchess will attend The Royal Foundation’s ‘Mental Health in Education’ conference and that evening it's the 100 Women in Hedge Funds gala.

Anyone think this is the same dress she wore to Prince Charles' 70th birthday, but in white? Looks like similar shoulder detail to me at first glance. Wow, wow, wow! The DoC is stunning.

    1. Yes! Flowers are different but otherwise it seems she has ordered the same dress in two colorways. There's no way these are from different designers. Even the hairstyle is very close, with the volume on top.

  5. First thoughts: WOW! Maybe my favorite ever evening look on Kate. The one-shouldered gown gives it a sexiness but she still looks elegant. I love the pleats and shoulder detail. And most of all, the up-do! The dreaded low chignon is gone and this is a trendy, flattering up-do! Love the earrings as well. I thought a choker necklace might have completed the look but oh well, can't have everything. Great look on Kate!

    3. Ivy Lin, I second your thought on this being my favourite look on Kate ever. I remember seeing her at the Royal Variety Performance in 2017 and thinking "This is my favourite look on Kate"... Then I saw her dress at the Diplomatic Reception last year and I was like "This is my new favourite look on Kate" ... And now I am thinking the same thing again Lol! Kate just keeps getting it spot on, I love the dress, her hair, make up and jewels!

I gave up looking at the fashion from awards shows years ago because I was always left underwhelmed by the slits up to here and plunges down to there on the dresses. I am also not a fan of ostentatious styles like enormous bows on a gown etc and for that reason I felt like Hollywood lost the glamour it once did so well. But I love seeing Kate at the BAFTA's! She injects some much needed glamour and elegance to the red carpet and I love it! Nothing risqué or over the top, just pure grace and style from Kate :)

  10. She really does look gorgeous. Those earrings are wonderful -- I like them so much that I think they would be great without the pearls. The gown is beautiful; I love the hem. This is the sort of gown that would look beautiful in nearly every color, too. Wonder how it would look without the shoulder flowers but maybe something at the waist. The thing with Kate is that she looks terrific in nearly everything.

    1. The earrings are Diana’s South Sea Pearl Earrings, not the Emir of Qatar earrings. If you compare the two, the diamond portion of the Qatar earrings are in a sunburst pattern, which is very different than the ones Kate is wearing tonight.

      Delete
    2. mars, Diana's earrings yes, but I believe the Emir of Qatar earrings, received as a wedding gift, were a closed floral and not the open circle look that Kate is wearing. Both have a pearl drop which I love.

  34. While Kate has occasionally worn some Diana’s jewelry, she haven’t really dipped very deep into her MiL’s jewelry box. I was always wondering if she was holding back until she and Harry’s wife can divide it together and that we will see a lot more of them now. This pair, for example does not seem to be Meghan’s style at all, so it makes sense that Kate is wearing them, but she could not have known that until Meghan was in the picture.

    1. I think this is very possible :)

    2. QotS Good theory. I always wondered why we didn't see more of Diana's jewelry on Kate although I suppose some could have been sold. I would like to see a few thing on Meghan but alas, she's a bit of a minimalist jewelry-wise. Happily, Kate can really rock a beautiful earring, and I do love the slightly small pearl drop on this pair.

      Delete
    3. Meghan has actually worn quite a bit of Dianas jewels. Just of the top of my head I can think of an aquamarine ring, gold bracelet, diamond tennis bracelet and butterfly earrings!

      Delete
    4. QotS - I was wondering the same thing. I would suspect that both William and Harry had sentimental pieces. It must be a difficult thing. Not sure how one would even go about it. Those of us that followed Diana would love to see both Kate and Meghan wear her jewelry. So many beautiful jewels.

Meghan has worn those beautiful diamond chandelier earrings in Fiji and to Prince Charles' birthday party. I expect that we'll see her in some of Diana's spectacular diamond earrings. Maybe the aquamarines or some lovely dangling sapphires. Let's hope we keep seeing both of them in more that we remember.

    5. I am still hoping to see the Sapphire 7 layer pearl choker. That will be a night to remember!

  45. I personally am not a fan of this look. It is not high fashion and looks a little “prommy” to me. I love the earrings (the fact she is paying homage to Diana.) But none of her looks to the BAFTAs have stunned me. The makeup ages her. She is beautiful though.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Maybe it has a little "prommy" feeling. To me, the fabric looks very similar to many of her dresses (last year bafta, 2011 lilac, the darkblue/green she wore in NewYork, etc...). So yes, she does look beautiful, but no, its not a memorable look or exciting for me since I feel like I saw it already several times in different colour shades (at least the lower part of the dress). 2. She's not really a high fashion gal and I usually find that when she tries to go high fashion, it's a miss (I'm thinking of the terrible Erdem gowns). She sticks to her personal style and what works for her. To me, she comes across the most confident when she does that and the outfit then looks better.

      Delete
    3. Last year's BAFTA gown and the New York gown are one and the same. She was pregnant both wearings. I thought the design was an example of non-maternity clothing that worked well for pregnancy. There is a resemblance to both the lilac gown and.as far as we can tell, to the pink birthday gown.

It would be a lucky lady indeed who wore this McQueen gown to her prom. I know comparisons to prom gowns are popular but nowadays one can see just about anything at a school prom It does have a Grace Kelly feel to me.

      Delete
    4. Prom?? I thought prom ensembles now include combat boots and garments made of duct tape, ill-fitting tiny dresses with worse-fitting undergarments, statement pins and buttons slapped on the front and odd colored hair. I am tired of these words: granny, Disney princess, and prom, to describe anyone's clothing, anywhere. There is nothing new under the sun-its all been done before.

I like the shoes and the bag, and while the earrings aren’t to my taste, I like them better with the newer pearl drops and it’s always nice to see Diana’s jewelry being worn again. 70. I think the dress may also be a tribute to Diana. Diana's last public engagement was at the Royal Albert Hall in June, 1997, for a performance of Swan Lake. Catherine's gown, to me, resembles the costumes in that ballet. The white, filmy, one shouldered, look. I believe there were embellishments similar as well. In addition, Diana wore these earrings, the diamond portion above without the pearl drop. It may all be a coincidence but I don't think so. If true, as a memorial to William' Mother's last official appearance, in the same Hall with the earrings she wore as well as a gown so similar in spirit to the swan costumes...quite poignant.
Of course, she is absolutely beautiful. All of it.
I also thought this dress is reminiscent of her lilac gown from Los Angeles, which is one of my all-time favorites she has worn. McQueen never lets her down.

YASSS Kate! That horrible matronly chignon is nowhere to be seen and this dress is definitely the best of any BAFTA gowns, so far!! I agree with everyone who thinks this is very similar to the pink gown she wore for Charles' 70th. I love it!

    ReplyDelete
  76. Beautiful. One of her best! I think it's similar to the pink one she wore to Charles' birthday party. It also reminds me of Diana's off the shoulder white dress in Brazil in 1991.

  77. I love it when she styles her updo with a little bit of pouf in the back...it’s glamorous and fun and sexy. She looks amazing. Wonder if William ever looks at her all glammed up, perfectly at ease with all the other star power around her and thinks “I can’t believe I ever had my doubts about her being the perfect mate for me!”?

  78. Oh my goodness! Sheer perfection! I love everything about this look - the gown, the shoes, the makeup, her beautiful hair in that intricate updo. I think, like a lot of others, that this is my favourite formal gown ever on Catherine!

  79. I will also pick this grown as the best of the year. I am going to say that the Romy 100 Silver and Dusk Blue Fireball Glitter Dégradé Fabric Pointy Toe Pumps Kate is wearing tonight, she wore them at the State Banquet at Buckingham Place in Oct, 2018, that we never saw the shoes. The State Banquet dress was pale blue and these new pumps we are seeing has blue sparkles on the pump.

She just might be the most beautiful woman in the world tonight. At a job in college that I had, some guys I worked with used to joke with the manager because his wife was so beautiful and they felt he was plain. They used to say "You are so "overchicked"". Prince William might be that tonight, as any man would be. Just a little joke, wink wink ;)

  86. Kate was so stunningly beautiful tonight!
As I saw the pictures my first thought was what princess Charlotte must think, to see her mother dress up and present as such complete perfection of beauty, grace and style...?
Kate looks gorgeous wearing jeans and sneakers, but to see her tonight is a pure vision, from head to to toe she nailed it. The jewelry, the dress, the shoes. Her hair and makeup tonight are perfect too. And most of all she is glowing with happiness and confidence. William also looks so happy and I imagine he could not be more proud of Kate.
I wish these two the BEST.

  89. Thank you, Charlotte, so much for the wonderful videos that you included in your post. They added so much to my enjoyment of the engagement, especially the conversations the Cambridges had with the movie casts after the ceremony. I had also heard about the funny expression that Claire Foy had when the Cambridges walked into the theatre but had not been able to find that video on any other site. I should have known that you would include a video that allowed me to see that so clearly. I fully agree with you about the Duchess's look tonight. She looks stunningly beautiful and her dress is simply breath-taking. Thank you for giving the evening such great coverage. It was a real treat! All the best, AnneHH

  92. Oh so sorry I disagree with most all of you about the dress-sadly- it’s the flowers that have me stumped- this is such a debutant coming out gown. I would have tossed the flowers, kept the same gathering that is under the flowers and added the biggest jeweled choker I had available, a beautiful sapphire necklace would have been just the thing, then added sapphire earrings as big as my thumb, I would have knocked them dead with jewels, kept the dress Uber simple, but definitely ditched the flowers. Duchesses don’t accessorize with fabric flowers- ever- Duchesses accessorize with Jewels!!!

    1. These are not fake flowers, as you seem to imply. This is part of the dress, as plumes would be. Plenty of royals use decorations of this kind.

      Camilla

    2. I can't argue with you Indigoisle that Duchesses should accessorize with jewels, but think the flowers gave the dress some interesting, tone on tone effects from the front and the back. Had Kate opted for the model's version with the floor length drape, then a beautiful brooch on the shoulder would have been perfect. This is Kate's style and her "formula" and by many accounts, it was very elegantly successful.

  105. I am amazed at how many people are sure it is the same as the pink gown except for the colour. And that based on about 2 square inches we can see of the pink gown. As far as we know all they have in common is that they are both one-shoulder with flowers - though distinctly different flowers - on the shoulder. For all we know the pink one is not even a dress but a jumpsuit, or it could be short (unlikely but possible).
We know Kate doesn’t mind having the same thing in different colours, so it is a definite possibility (and it is such a gorgeous dress I would not blame her), but I am not willing to make that call based on the small part of the pink dress we saw. At the time a number of designers were mentioned that had dresses in similar styles to the pink dress, I don’t remember McQueen even being mentioned.

  113. This has to be one of Kate's most iconic look to date. She literally outshine everyone at the awards like people were so in awe of her presence. This dress is beautiful, classic, and so regal. Kate is so damn gorgeous like I'm so in awe how classy and graceful she is . William is one lucky man.

  114. Absolutely classic, timeless and elegant look, pure perfection! As much as I loved watching those photos and perfect look, I must say it's the first video that amazed me. Did you noticed how every inch confident Catherine looked when she was walking down the stairs? No any hint of nerveousnes but simply confident, smiling and happy duchess. Some way she seemed more confident than William. And no matter what she wears, it is that confident what really makes her shine and sparkle. I think that we could see that same confident from her face from her last engament with children. There was not even tiny nervousness in her face. And it is fantastic see, that she can now enjoy her work with her full heart, when that little unsecurity is gone.

  116. This is a lovely dress, and seems to have inspired rivers of adulation for the Duchess, so well done, Kate. They appear to have had a lovely time at the BAFTAS too. These classic silhouettes always work the best. The shoulder detail is exquisite. The retro updo suits her, it's very Princess Margaret. Very glamorous evening makeup.

  119. Just a little detail: I notice Kate is not wearing pantyhose and thus following the usual trends of the BAFTA actresses. I actually think this is a positive change: it's a red-carpet event and the shoes she is wearing aren't the type of shoes that call for hose. But it's a sign of more confidence from her: she is wearing what she wants to wear, and not what she thinks she SHOULD wear. The off-the-shoulder look again is another thing she probably wouldn't have worn a few years ago.
