The Cambridges & Friends Attend Sunday Service at St Mary's

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined the Queen for Sunday service at St Mary's this morning.

The Cambridges made the walk from the house surrounded by a group of friends. It's becoming something of a tradition for William and Kate to host their close-knit group on the weekend before Kate's birthday. The Duchess celebrates her 37th birthday on Wednesday, a relaxed weekend before returning to London seems the perfect way to mark the occasion. The Middleton family were notably absent this year - they are enjoying a sun soaked holiday in St Barts with Pippa's in-laws.

The couple were joined by close friends James and Laura Meade. James is Charlotte's godfather and last year William and Kate chose Laura as one of Louis' godparents. They were accompanied by George's godmother Emilia Jardine-Paterson and her husband David. Emilia has been a friend of Kate's since their time at Marlborough College.

Other familiar faces included Charlotte's godfather Thomas van Straubenzee. The man beside Thomas is Tom Sutton, a school friend of William's. I believe the lady in the navy hat is his wife Harriet. With thanks to Louise for identifying the couple.

Her Majesty was elegant as ever en route to church this morning. I do miss seeing Philip by the Queen's side at public events. I very much hope the Duke is relishing every day of his retirement. They are both said to treasure Christmas at Sandringham with the family and their time together on the estate afterwards.

After the service, William and Kate met locals and well-wishers.

The Duchess received lovely flowers.

The Mail Online reports:

'As she walked away from church, Kate accepted flowers from Mia Croft, ten, and brother Oakley, seven, from Letchworth, Hertfordshire, who were with grandparents Brian and Daphne Croft.
The Duchess leaned down to collect the blooms, saying: 'Are these for the Queen? I will take them back for you. She will love these - lots of bright colours.'
Mr Croft said: 'It is a lovely experience for our grandchildren to come here and it is fantastic that the Duchess stopped to speak to them.'

The Duchess wore the bespoke funnel neck Catherine Walker coat she debuted in Norway almost one year ago. At the time, the garment served as a maternity piece for Kate. The coat has been altered and taken in since.

The Duchess wore a polka-dot dress underneath.

From our limited view of the dress, it very much looks like the LK Bennett Mortimer dress the Duchess wore last month for a visit to new patronage Evelina London.

Several readers suggested the Alessandra Rich dress Kate wore for Prince Charles' 70th birthday portraits. I believe the crepe-de-chine midi dress is too long.

Kate's love of headbands continued today as she debuted a new piece matching her coat.

It appears the headband is a Jane Taylor design (with many thanks to Replica Royalty).

Eagle-eyed Gabi notes the Duchess wore her navy Prada pointy toe pumps.

And carried her navy suede Jimmy Choo Celeste clutch with cube clasp. The clutch is described as: "Featuring an elegant chain shoulder strap an iconic Jimmy Choo metal cube clasp, this statement accessory is finished with an internal slip pocket and foil embossed logo."

Kate completed the look with her Annoushka pearls and Kiki McDonough hoops.

It's always a treat to see the royals at Sandringham. If you're just popping in, our annual Year in Review post was published yesterday. Click here to read it.

I am absolutely certain that this is the blue Catherine Walker 'maternity'coat worn on the visit to Norway at the beginning of February last year... and which has since been taken in! Recycling at its best!! And is that the navy blue polka dot dress from Prince Charles's 70th birthday photos peeking out at the back? She looks fantastic!!

    2. I'm not sure it's either of the dresses that have been mentioned in these comments. The edge of the sleeve is different. What's clear is that she does enjoy polka dots!

    3. I agree with both the coat and dress, they both were probably tailored, the coat taken in a little in the wasted area and the navy dress the hemp cut and taken up a little. In one of the pictures you can see a little white showing out from her gloves, the white boarder is on navy blue polka dot dress she wore in the summer, the ALESSANDRA RICH pleated dress. William is wearing an elegant navy coat that compliments Catherine’s outfit, spot on. Hopefully someone in their staff that coordinators their outfits are reading our comments, and is now having William match Catherine’s color scheme, they both look terrific.

  2. Dear Charlotte and all followers of the blog. Happy New Year! I have been a follower for some time but not commented before just wanted to publicly thank Charlotte for maintaining this wonderful place to visit to read about Kate William and their children - I am a long time royal fan (a love inherited from my mother - and yesterday I found her "Royal Wedding 1947" commemorative book!)and I usually check in each evening to see what has been going on in KP land! I used to love the Princess of Wales but have grown to appreciate the strength of Camilla and the fabulous support she is to Charles. Other favourites are Sophie Wessex and the workaholic Princess Royal.

Back in the day I worked for a company that renovated Royal Lodge after the QM passed ahead of the Duke of York and his family moving in. Seeing a smidgeon of the behind the scenes lives at that time made me realise that these folks are just regular people that happen to be living extraordinary lives. Yes there is immense wealth and privilege and all the best seats to all the events of the day but, really, would any of us want the degree of press intrusion that comes with? I wouldn't for one. I do believe the role of the Royal Family will develop and change, particularly when the Crown passes to the Prince of Wales but I am completely in favour of the monarchy and its continuation.

Now, introduction done, thanks for this early post Charlotte. Kate's style definitely seems to be developing into something far more polished and regal... If that is another headband...I hope she will start to mix these up with the more usual hats.

    Have a good Sunday all.

  7. I do think she is wearing the Alessandra Rich dress, but a shorter version, as seen on SJP.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree, Kiwi. In one photo there is a white edge showing beneath the coat sleeve. The Rich dress has white cuffs. I don't think we saw the whole length of the dress in the family photo. It could have been shorter there. Didn't she wear that dress another time to an engagement? Kate often alters hemlines.
I actually don't think her coat was altered for this appearance--at least not down-sized. I think difference in draping is due to walking in this photo and standing still in the tour wearing. Position changes draping and fit appearance. I don't recall any other maternity dress/coat that has been obviously sized down post pregnancy for re-wear. Her re-wears of maternity outfits are usually for use during a pregnancy.
Also, if green there would be more of a contrast against William's navy coat and trousers. Her dress and his coat seemed to blend together.
He was wearing a yellow shirt!

      Delete
    2. Someone suggested the white edge at the sleeve was the lining of the coat because a bit of white or blue was showing at the hem. I took another look. There is definitely some light blue near the coat hem. I can't imagine a blue winter coat having a white lining. The bit at the sleeve is white-not the same color at all as the hem bit and appears to be over her glove on top. I don't think her arm is positioned at an angle to show lining at the sleeve.

  8. Following Kate from the U.S., I do love seeing her elegant hats, which we don't see much of here. But, having said that, what I love about the headband hats is that we see more of her face and her glorious smiles.

On reflection I agree that the dress is the L K Bennett, but in navy... it is shown on the LKB website in both green and navy blue. Given her propensity to have the same item in more than one colour and the fact that she is wearing navy accessories, I would guess Kate has the dress in both colours!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with you, it could be the LK Bennett Dress in Navy. When Catherine like a style dress or whatever she will purchase, order it in another color that she likes, matches or looks good on her. The only thing that can change is, I saw by her glove area white sticking out a little and it could be the other Blue & White pooka dot dress she owns.
I agree if she is wearing Navy Blue pumps, she would wear the same color scheme.

      Delete
    2. I also think it's the LK Bennett dress, but odd as it seems for the duchess to be wearing a green dress with a blue coat/hat, in the full length shot where we see the dress peeking through, it absolutely looks like the dark green to me! Either way, I'm on board with polka dots!

  10. Ok finally a headband I can get behind. The smaller size and the cloth material make it look almost bohemian, which gives it a bit of quirkiness that I like. I love the coat (and I don't usually like Catherine Walker coats). Very nice outfit.

    1. Agree about the headbands. I believe this is the first time we have seen her altering a piece from her wardrobe after pregnancy. I will say, even though I don’t like all the pieces I love her new sense for recycling (if you want to call wearing things more than once recycling). I do like the coat. The colour is beautiful.

    2. I wonder if the fact that she might have altered this maternity coat is an indication that they now consider their family complete and she doesn’t expect to need any more maternity clothing.

    3. I agree, Ivy Lin! I haven’t been a fan of them but I like this one. I like the lower profile of this one. An actual headband that doesn’t look like something from the 16th century.

    4. I am a fan of the headbands in general, but do like the different style of this and think it goes very well with her coat. I loved this coat when she wore it on her tour and happy to see her wearing it again. I think Kate has always had an artistic, bohemian side that she has sometimes expressed through her "unconventional clothes" but think she is now expressing it through her hats and currently with her headbands. Where she may have a certain standard style that she has adopted with her clothes, she seems to step out and experiment more with her hats. The color and look of this outfit is lovely and suits her well. cc

  11. I think she is lovely in that coat & colour. I don't mind the hat. She really looks good in anything but to me it's reminiscent of Tudor style Anne Boleyn- esque. I think it would look better with her hair up in the back. Maybe make it more modern.

  14. I like the dress weather it's green, navy or black. I have always loved polkadots! Way before they were in haha. I do think the dress would either be in black or navy considering the coat and accessories. I like the coat and navy shoes and clutch. I don't like much of the head band choices, they look too toudor to me. This one is my least favourite since it's... flat to her head, I guess? I like the rouching in it though. I have to say, her hair is terrible! It looks like she got up, showered and put the headband on and walked out the door!

    1. Looking back over many years I do think Kates hair because of its curly/wavy nature requires professional help to get the polished look. A pony tail would have solved the problem this morning.

    2. Well that is what most of us do before we go to church, isn’t it? Get up, get dressed, brush your hair and put on a bit of makeup. Since this is a private event and not a official engagement I do not expect Kate to be picture perfect. She is appropriately dressed and that is all I expect.

  16. While I like the profile of the hatband much better because it's not overwhelming, Kate's doing exactly as I feared: she's in a rut. Just as we was with her sledge heels, her wedges, and her jeggings/blazer/stripped shirt uniform, so it is with her hatbands.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don’t think it is as much a rut as it is a part of who Kate is. When she like something, she wears it a lot, until she moves on to something else. The LK Bennet sledges, then the Rossi pumps. Skinny jeans. The oakleave earrings she is currently favouring.

  23. Catherine looks lovely. Like the Queen, she is adopting a "suit" of sorts. I find that very refreshing and reflects her sense of confidence. It is wonderful to see close friends joining them for the weekend. We can say all we want about family bonds; however, I've found golden friends to be far more nurturing, accepting and lasting.

  24. So nice to see them for the first Sunday of 2019. I like the headbands but I miss hats. However I do understand why Catherine favours these at the moment as they are much less hassle than a hat: light, easy to carry, no hat pins, brims, trimmings or angles to worry about. Just slip it on, brush hair and good to go.

The nosy parker in me wants to know the names of the friends with them. I recognise quite a few of the unnamed faces from previous years. I do think it is absolutely wonderful they have maintained these very close, loyal friendships for decades despite the pressures and intrusiveness related to their roles

  25. I simply love this blog. I live in the US, but have always loved the comings and goings of the Royals. My first recollection was of Princess Margaret's first wedding on the Television. I was 10 at the time and thought she looked like something I had never seen...gorgeous. I believe the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge represent your nation with grace and elegance. The Queen looked wonderful and, as many, I too miss seeing Prince Phillip by her side. It just doesn't seem "quite right". I grew up seeing him with her and going on engagements on his own. I remember well when our President Kennedy was assassinated and the Duke represented Great Britain at his funeral. The Cambridge's looked wonderful today as always. I love Catherine's outfit. Thank you for bringing them close up and personal. :)

I love Catherine's recent love of headband style hats. they suit her and are so elegant. Blue also suits her.

Loved your previous post. I'm with you, and hope we get to see the pink dress she wore for Charles' 70th birthday, I am so curious to see it. I also agree totally with your final paragraph, you said it all perfectly. I really don't like how the media are trying to suggest a feud between the two Duchesses.

  27. Kate seems to have had some late night birthday celebrations with her friends looking at the heavy bags under her eyes. I just think at this point the hatband has now been over done. It would be nice if she mixed the look occasionally into her fashionable hat selections. The color blue really works for her. HM on the other hand looks absolutely stunning in her fashion statement today. Beautiful coat and accessories.

  28. Happy New Year Charlotte, I hope you are completely well now! Oh I LOVE the Queen's outfit--the fur trim on the cuffs and the color and the hat. This is actually my favorite look on her ever. I thought Kate looked tired around her eyes but very happy. And William looks happy too. So nice to see them out and about and with their friends. Happy birthday for Wednesday Duchess!

    1. I agree about the so called feud. The media acts as though two grown women cannot possibly get along and I guess this is reinforced by so many reality shows. In my life, I've always enjoyed long term genuine relationships with other women. Actually, I don't know what I would do without my sista/friends. Those two young ladies are in a unique position having neither of them been born to the throne. Catherine has had more time to adjust but Meghan has been able to grow a full life before joining the RF. I believe they get along just fine and have each other's back.

I am not adverse to the head bands in general as some seem to be. I loved the pillbox style on Christmas Day. This one in particular has a nun effect if you will. I too wish she would mix it up a bit, but she is a stunner as usual. GREAT color on her.

  31. The blue is a very faltering color, for anyone actually. She looks very lovely in the coat. I don't like how the headband flattens her hair but it's meant to be casual I guess. Th queen looks wonderful and the camel seems different from er usual bright colors.

It's nice that Kate can be here and her family and Pippa's husband family can be elsewhere without any negative stories that it's the result of "feuding!" Multiple family members do not always travel in packs. :)

    1. It is nice Allison that Kate can be here and Pippa, her husband (his family) and her new baby boy can bond and spend time with the Middletons. I think that most families (the royals included) carve out time for each other in a manner that works for everyone in the family. I think Kate, while she probably would love to be on the trip, is very happy to see her sister have that special time with Michael and Carole and that they may enjoy their fourth grandchild. cc

  32. Nice to see W&K with friends today. I love the Walker coat but I'm not sold on the headband. It seems a little flat. I prefer a pillbox style hat myself. I think Kate might be wearing the LKB dress. The fabric seems to be a little heavier than the crepe-de-chine of the AR dress. I believe the little bit of white we are seeing isn't cuff but coat lining. You can see a streak of white or light blue at the hem of her coat in the same photo so that might be a bit of lining that has slipped down.

I love the blue headband such a classic I could see the QM in a hat with a similar style when she was young. The coat looks lovely too the colour suits Catherine so well. 40. These type of headbands are reminiscent of the 1950s... Kate seems to emulate this style, of which I am really enjoying seeing this era being revived somewhat... It's timeless and a lot of the style from that time never seems to ever go out of style. It's classic, clean, and I like that she shakes it up a bit with something modern from time to time... I enjoy your writings, Charlotte! I always look forward to seeing what the Duchess will wear next. Most of the time, she doesn't disappoint.

I just gotta say, I'm not a fan of these headbands. I'm just going to hope its a "phase" she's going through. I think it must show me as too much of an 80s/90s gal. 47. Kate seems to have taken a liking to hair-band hats, as several of us have pointed out. I think they suit her, and right now, she owns it because no one else in the royal family is wearing them. I still think this may become one of her "signatures," along with the coatdress. The queen wears a coat with a matching dress or complementary dress, or a two piece skirt suit. I think the coat dress is evolving into pretty much a Kate thing.

The day seemed perfect for William, Kate, and friends. So nice to see them all there, a part of their family. William & Kate are stunning. They appear relaxed, & confident in their growing public roles. They make quite a statement.
William seems to grow more attractive with age & responsibility. It appears he has upped his game in his clothes style & fit. He looks great! To me, Kate looks perfect; strickingly beautiful with little effort, sophisticated, very regal, yet approachable, headbands and all. She appears comfortable who she is, and knows when she looks her best.
On a less serious note, one of the photos made me look twice & giggle. Anyone else zoom-in on the 2nd photo from the top? It appears Kate's right eyebrow is lefting off!

  49. As William is attending the World Economics Forum later this month, with a focus on his Mental Health at Work initiative, I wanted to share an article released by the WEF: https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2019/01/why-the-british-royal-family-dropped-its-stuff-upper-lip

These are the kinds of articles I wish would be written all of the time, instead of the salacious garbage that makes the rounds every day. I also wish that more people were interested in substantive writing on members of the royal family, instead of choosing to ingest and further encourage the false narratives, gossip columnists, and tug-of-war writing that is currently dominating. Personally, I also admit that I'm growing very weary of the number of articles that seem to only be able to focus on what is being worn by Kate or Meghan. I realize that there are many people who love fashion and find pleasure in the clothing, shoe, and cosmetic industries, but not everyone does; including myself. What Kate, Meghan, William, and Harry wear doesn't matter to me. I am only interested in the causes they support and their involvement, particularly the Heads Together initiatives, and I wish more substantive writing was given towards that purpose. But, sadly, I know that is not what sells.
Over the last year, as so much rhetoric in the press around William, Kate, Meghan, and Harry has taken on divisive, vile, and cruel tones, I have actually found myself asking if I should just stop following the four of them at all. It would be easy to do. I am not a royalist or monarchist. I do not agree with the concept of a monarchy, constitutional or otherwise. I do not believe that any individual is better than another, simply because of the family they were born into. I do not agree with the concept of inherited titles or obeisance/deference to a monarch and his/her family. I do respect the British royal family, and the country's choice to have a constitutional monarchy, but I am not in awe of the royal family. I wish that William, Kate, Meghan, and Harry could just have a normal life out of the spotlight, because I can see how very much they long for that too. They are trying to find ways to create some modicum of normalcy for their families, while also using the platform they have to help others and it is their desire to help that draws me to their work and patronages. This is especially true of their mental health initiatives. Supporting mental health has become the foundation for their work with those who are homeless, veterans and their families, young children, those living with addiction, adolescents living in challenging circumstances or dealing with cyberbullying, mothers living with post-partum despression, and hospice and long-term care for children and adults with terminal or life-limiting illnesses. I believe even if they did not have the high-profile platform, that they would still find ways to support these causes and initiatives that are so deeply important to them. Because of their work and focus on the mental health and well-being of others, they understand the importance of making sure their own children are able to express their emotions in healthy ways and that their children know they can always talk about their feelings, concerns, and challenges. They are creating a safe and trusted space for their children to grow and develop, while helping others foster safe and trusted space in their own families and communities. I look forward to seeing their work, help, and support in mental health awareness, literacy, and advocacy continue and expand this year.

    1. I want to amend one sentence in my comment above..."I do not believe that any individual is better or more important than another, regardless of the family they were born into."

    2. Sarah, I agree with you and am glad you ere able to express your thoughts so well! Much better than I could. On the positive side, I find that I am moved beyond fashion for Meghan and I think perhaps her use of a e basic colors has propelled me to check her look and then become involved in her cause, mostly because Charlotte provides such in-depth reporting! I used to enjoy Kate more because there was a glimmer of hope that something she ore could be shared, but while that no longer exists, I think her tendency toward a coat or coat-dress in many colors may make us vie her working wardrobe more like very stylish uniforms and perhaps focus on her job at hand. It is a strange situation, and I wonder how George or George's child can possibly feel comfortable with having his/her life settled for him/her. I think that George's generation will see less of a focus on one supreme monarch and perhaps a sharing of duties while possibly allowing for some regular occupations among George, Charlotte, and Louis.

I feel like I should start each comment with "I don't believe any of it" because of the made-up stories about the four.Even hen they are not vile, they are petty and stupid. Hopefully as the four age and people get used to their existence, there won't be such craziness surrounding them and they will become more like Anne and Sophie during their appearances. Conversely, they can do so much good now. I am a die-hard fan of the Hubb community and cookbook, and I admit to doubting if the venture could have been a success if anyone else like Beatrice, for example, spearheaded it, which is very unfair but she doesn't generate the media attention that Kate and Meghan do.

Good deeds inch ahead one at a time. Just the fact that children from a mixed racial/ethnic background can look at Meghan and know they can also be someone special has done a lot of good where we may not see it. I agree that the to omen have a lot that they can and will do to help others.

    3. Allison, somewhere recently in the news (Golden Globes?) a woman of color ardently spoke of the importance of role models. It is encouraging to see those like us in some way- whatever and whoever we are, attain public recognition and fame. I suspect that both Catherine and Meghan chose to look no farther than home for their inspiration. Carole and Doria have been excellent role models. Not all children are so fortunate to have someone close to home to model.

We never know when we ourselves as everyday people are being watched and perhaps emulated. The kindness and expertise of a nurse a child notices while hospitalized or that of a favorite teacher in school can be a catalyst for dreams of a fulfilling career.

I really like this coat even more with her hair up so you can see the neck detail. im hoping that its not the green dress, that would go weird with the blue coat, im thinking she has a few polka dot dresses and its something we haven't seen yet. the head bands have grown on me and I think they are interesting, I like this one, it seems very Jackie O to me over here in the colonies. I do agree with whomever said she should rotate them more, not just a headband everytime but between hats. She looks flawless and happy and confident and they are such a great couple. even wills is looking great fashion wise!!

On another note, the queen looks fabulous and I really really like her hat!

I love everything about Kate's look in these photos, most of all the colour of her coat.
Happy Birthday, Kate! 💐 She had Louise at the same age that my Mum had me. I hope this year brings her a lot of health and joy.

I'm very late to this, but this coat and headband thing are just drab. I don't understand Kate's fashion evolution and miss her earlier looks, but we will see what the rest of 2019 brings!

    With-devastating-honesty-courage-JAMES-MIDDLETON-reveals-private-battle-depression.html

I just came home and checked around news and ended up reading this article by James Middleton. I am near tears because I am aware that he had been there and back. Yes one scary part of depression is, " the absence of feelings" as James put it. It is a well communicated, sincere, properly expressed and unselfishly shared article. Bravo! James Middleton! All the best for you, more of the the better clarity will come to you. He is a gem.

    2. Everyone needs to read this article by James Middleton. I know from personal experience how much courage it takes to open up about one's journey with mental illness, but I am even more aware of how much strength it takes to live with depression or any mental illness. I am proud of him for writing this article and sharing his story with such sensitivity, emotion, vulnerability, and honesty. Others will be helped by this courage and insight.

    4. Heart breaking article and very honestly expressed. Wishing him continued success in his wellness journey. As he expressed it is not a treat it and be done illness but it is a chronic condition for many, not all of course, that means ongoing care throughout ones life. Anyone who deals with a chronic health condition knows that even though you feel better when treated the year after year toll of having to deal with a chronic illness brings its own stress. Good for him for writing.
