The Cambridges Attend the Queen's Pre-Christmas Luncheon

The Cambridges spent the afternoon at Buckingham Palace for Her Majesty's pre-Christmas luncheon. The royal calendar milestone indicates Christmas is merely days away.

William and Kate were photographed arriving with Nanny Maria Teresa, George and Charlotte just before 1 pm. It's not known if Louis was with them due to limited photos.

The Cambridges are no doubt making last-minute preparations for the festivities before decamping to their country pile Anmer Hall on the Sandringham estate. According to multiple reports, the family will celebrate at Sandringham with the Royal family this year. It will offer a chance for the family to regroup and reflect on a terrific year which included the arrival of Prince Louis.

Kate has attended every year since 2010 when she and William became engaged. This year marks her ninth consecutive appearance.

The luncheon offers an opportunity for extended members of the family to enjoy the festivities with Her Majesty, particularly if they will not be joining the royals at Sandringham next week. There was a full house palace as always. Below, Philip arriving from Windsor; Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, the Wessexes and Peter Phillips and his family.

Buckingham Palace is beautifully decorated for Christmas. I imagine the children in particular adore seeing the trees and ornaments on display. Every year, three trees are placed in the Marble Hall - and a garland is fixed along the grand staircase. The custom of displaying Christmas trees was introduced to Britain in the late 18th by Queen Charlotte, consort of King George III, although it was a yew tree rather than a fir that was used. The trees are grown in Windsor.

The royal kitchens are particular busy at this time of year creating delicious festive treats. Chefs will create over 12,000 mince pies for receptions and lunches this month.

'Give yourself plenty of time,' says royal pastry chef Kathryn Cuthbertson — It's her number one tip to anyone making mince pies this Christmas. 'Pastry is not something that likes to be rushed,' agrees Chef de Partie, Victoria Scupham, who Kathryn hired six years ago to work alongside her. They also recommend 'having cold hands' when working with pastry,  which will help keep it at the right consistency.

Take a look at the handmade ginger biscuits. If interested in creating your own, the royals chefs share their recipe here.

A look at the Duchess departing.

And a little wave from Charlotte :)

As we can see, Kate wore a pink blouse or dress. It's been suggested it might be the Stella McCartney dress she wore in 2011 for Philip's birthday dinner, however I don't believe the fabric is a match. Kate accessorised with pearl earrings. They are the same pair, thought to be by In2Design, she wore in Sweden.

We leave you a look at a Christmas card Kate sent to RAF Air Commodore Dawn McCafferty CBE.

The Cambridges will travel to Norfolk in the coming days. We'll see them next on Christmas morning :)

  1. Not a fan of car shots - never will be - but I don't expect anything more from this event - although a group photo would be nice for posterity - as the family ages and expands. Kate looks nice in pink. Glad to see Philip there looking well.

    1. I know Julia! Just enough picture to make us want to see more. But thanks to Charlotte we get to see a bit. I'm still wanting to see the rose pink Kate wore to Charles ' birthday.

    2. Yes. Hard to believe any of the gossip about turmoil between Kate and Meghan. But who knows. They are quite different.

    3. They are both mature, smart women who know their role within the RF. I remember Kate's kind looks toward Meghan when Serena lost the championship. And Meghan seems to be able to get along with everyone. I admit that I want to see them run out for hot chocolate together, with their arms intertwined, but we just don't see much interaction publicly among the cousins or even the Queen's children. We saw Kate with her children playing with Autumn's children, but that is so rare. Diana and Fergie were much younger and less mature when they showed their friendship.

  2. I love the pink color of the dress/blouse. Wish I could see the whole ensemble!

  3. Isn't that the Stella McCartney dress that Madonna have.

  4. I think this is a gorgeous dress she wore a few years ago. It’s by Stella McCarthy. Madonna has the same one.

    1. I hope it is a similar style in a different fabric. That satin glares and wrinkles!

  5. The last photo of Kate and Charlotte is precious. Charlotte has got that royal wave just right! She is a beauty just like her mother.

  6. Well Kate looks beautiful! How exciting for George and Charlotte ! George always looks anxious when he sees the photographers and Charlotte seems to be intrigued with them. Would love to take a peek at their family photo album especially photos from the Christmas luncheon. Thank you Charlotte for sharing the Ginger Biscuit Recipe, happy to see it here as someone had told me that it was published and it is an excellent recipe. Hoping that there will be some more photos to be shared. cc

  7. I like Kate in pink, but if I never saw another neck bow/tie thing again I would be happy. It bugs me, but she clearly likes the look.

  8. Pink is Kate's color - it looks lovely with her skin color. It looks like a three row car and that George and Charlotte are in the third row. I bet Louis is in his car seat in the middle row with the nanny.

  9. I agree Charlotte that this may not be the same dress. It doesn't have the same satin finish, and the color is lighter. Either way, I like the color. It is great that the Queen has most of her family close to her for this special season. Merry Christmas to all of the readers on this blog and to you and yours, Charlotte.

  10. Love Kates earrings. I understand pearls are making a big come back although they never went out of style in my house. The glimpses of the children are adorable. That Charlotte is a crowd pleaser.

    1. I love her earrings too, and agree about pearls, wear them daily. A very beautiful southern lady taught me, when in doubt, "pearls by day, diamonds by night." cc

  11. SOO COOL. Loved them all! I am glad I cannot be tempted to eat all the beautiful pastries.
Send me some on an e-mail;-)

  12. I don't believe it's the Stella McCartney. First, the material is completely different, not shiny at all. Second, the detail at the neck looks like a braid in a way, and on the Stella McCartney dress, it's a rose.

  13. Thanks, Charlotte. I hope the Cambridges enjoyed the festivities.

I agree - never did like the car shots, but happy to see them all. Charlotte - one question for you and it's totally off topic. Do you know why we haven't seen any pictures of Zara Tindall's new baby Lena? We've only seen a peek and that was from a distance. Has she been christened yet? Thanks!!

    1. Hello Rhonda,

That's a very good question. I believe Mia was over 10 months old when she was christened. If Mike and Zara follow the same pattern it could be well into the spring. I think the Tindalls did a spread with Hello! when Mia was born, it's possible we'll see another. If not, I'm sure we'll see Lena with her parents and grandmother at the horse trials and polo throughout 2019 :)

There was a spread after Lena's birth too, except it was just to advertise a land rover stroller the Tindalls use and so the baby herself was barely seen except for a very short moment Zara lifts her out of the stroller but even that view wasn't great for being able to see the baby.

    3. I didn’t even know Land Rover made strollers! Thanks for that info, Maggie. It’s a shame you can’t see much of Lena in those photos.

  16. Am I the only one who really dislikes the colour? The particular shade in Polish (my mother tongue) we use to know as the underwear pink...;-).

Love the kids' rosy cheeks. Wonder if they are allowed to run around and play enough to look flushed?

  20. No Louis. Although they would not all travel in the same car anyway, would they?

    1. Louis was in a car seat in the middle next to Nanny Maria. The car has 3 rows of seats so George and Charlotte were seated in the back, third row.

  21. In the fourth picture from the top, Prince George really looks like his father, especially in the lower part of his face - mouth and jaw shape. First time I've seen that, I always thought he was a Michael Middleton look-alike!

  22. I think Louis was there. Beside Nanny B. Otherwise I would think George and Charlotte would be in the middle row.Erininnyc

I like this color of pink and like a neck bow if done right, but this one seems much too fussy and complicated. I don't think it's the same dress as the one she wore before, as that one is really shiny and more of a coral pink. I love her pearl earrings!

  24. She looks gorgeous in pink! Just love this little family and William and Katherine!! Charlotte your work on these blogs is professional, interesting, timely and appreciated. Job very well done! Here's to an eventful 2019 with The Cambridges and The Sussexes!

  25. Do we know if the Cambridges employ any other nannies? We only ever see MT at events like this, but there must be times when they are in need of more help. For example when Kate brought Louis with to London when they attended the Dutch State visit somebody had to stay with George and Charlotte at Anmer and somebody else had to look after Louis.
I also can’t see MT being on duty every Christmas so who look after the kids when she spends Christmas with her own people? (Christmas at Sandringham sounds like it involve lots of non-child-friendly events)

    1. I believe Emily Andrews said there is additional part-time help. Maria Teresa is the Cambridges' only full-time nanny. For events like the royal wedding where Maria Teresa was with George and Charlotte, and the Middleton family were in attendance, there was someone else looking after Louis.

  26. Those baroque pearl earrings are lovely. They always catch the light beautifully and are wonderful for glamming up day wear without being ostentatious and the design gives them a modern, youthful feel than some pearl jewellery. They were definitely a great buy.

  28. As much as I am looking forward to follow Sandringham events, I must admit that this year´s pre-Christmas engagements were a bit of a disappointment for me - not only from Kate. The RAF events were amazing and London engagements as well, but I would have liked to see more festive engagements, and again - not just from Kate, but from Meghan as well. I am not familiar with the princes´schedule so I can´t comment on them. But festive Kate is always so good and one more little engagement before Christmas (preferably with kids) would be an absolute delight. (The same goes for Meghan, although with her, we don´t know how she is feeling because of the pregnancy etc.) Anyway, I hope all of them -and you fellow readers- do have the happiest holidays filled with love and joy!
