The Duchess Brings Back Show-Stopping Teal Jenny Packham & A Very Special Photo of Kate, Louis and Charles!

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended the Tusk Conservation Awards at Banqueting House, London tonight.

For almost thirty years, Tusk has supported forward-thinking and successful conservation intervention in Africa. From the plains of the Serengeti to the rain forests of the Congo Basin, they are working towards a future in which people and wildlife can both thrive across the African continent. Prince William became became Royal Patron of Tusk in December 2005. William previously said he feels "very protective of wildlife, which is why I get emotional about it. You want to stand up for what is vulnerable and needs protecting. Elephants, rhinos, and many others animals that are persecuted don't have a voice".

Africa holds a very special place in both William and Harry's hearts, and now their wives' too. Shortly after Diana died, Charles took the princes to the continent on a trip which would spark a lasting affinity. They have both returned countless times since, both privately and officially. It was during a holiday with friends in Kenya in 2010 that William proposed to Kate.

Poaching, habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict are having a devastating impact on Africa’s wildlife. Tusk Trust believes local people and organisations are best positioned to address these threats, but are often under-resourced and lack the recognition they deserve. By partnering with leading and emerging conservationists across Africa, Tusk secures donor funding to invest in the best grassroots conservation initiatives – helping to increase their profile and maximise their impact. Through partnerships, significant progress in the incredibly difficult battle is happening, providing greater protection for over 10 million acres of land and more than 40 different threatened species, while benefitting more than 1,000,000 people.

In September, William visited Tusk projects in Namibia and Tanzania in his role as patron. The trip came ahead of the Illegal Wildlife Trade Conference which was held in London in October. The conference focused on three key themes: tackling the smuggling of animals, insects and plants as an organised crime, building coalitions, and closing markets. William delivered a keynote speech, saying he feared by the time George, Charlotte and Louis reach their twenties, elephants, rhinos and tigers will all cease to exist in the wild, adding: "I, for one, am not willing to look my children in the eye and say that we were the generation that let this happen."

The annual Tusk Conservation Awards celebrate the achievements of extraordinary people, whose work protecting Africa’s natural heritage might otherwise go unnoticed outside their fields. Speaking about the importance of the event, William said: "These awards, which mean a great deal to me personally, play a huge part in our mission to preserve Africa’s precious wildlife for its people.  It is vital that we recognise the dedication of these unsung heroes and the bravery of rangers risking their lives, day and night, on conservation’s frontline. We all owe them a huge debt of gratitude."

A peek outside Banqueting House tonight.

It is Kate's second appearance at the event. The Duchess joined William for inaugural Tusk Awards back in 2013 wearing a shimmering Jenny Packham gown. It marked her second official appearance following Prince George's birth seven weeks earlier.

To mark the awards, Sir David Attenborough shared the following message:

Prince William presented three awards. The Tusk Award for Conservation is given to an emerging leader in conservation in recognition of their contribution to date. The Tusk Wildlife Ranger Award recognises the dedication and bravery of rangers working to protect Africa's increasingly threatened wildlife. The Prince William Award for Conservation in Africa is a lifetime achievement award which commends outstanding dedication and contribution to conservation.

Julius Obwona was awarded the Tusk Wildlife Ranger Award for his incredible work protecting the elephant population of Murchinson Falls, Uganda. Julius started his career in 1995 as a ranger, rising through the ranks to Warden in Charge of Law Enforcement. Much of his operational experience was gained when the Lord’s Resistance Army were operational in the area. Under his guidance a highly trained team of 600 rangers have been deployed throughout Murchinson. New capabilities and skills have been implemented, such as marine rangers with patrol boats, and ranger posts in strategic areas. "By 2017 Julius and his team had removed 24 tonnes of snares from the Murchinson Delta reducing the ‘three elephants a day’ formerly being seen in traps to around three a month. Dozens of AK47's, 100’s of rounds of ammunition and 700 poachers’ boats were decommissioned. His leadership has led to the prosecution of 720 suspects involved in wildlife-related crimes. But success has not been without sacrifice. Many rangers have been injured or killed. Julius has received countless death threats and hardest of all has been the separation from his family. This has not deterred him. Julius demonstrates consistent integrity and bravery."

The winner of the Tusk Award for Conservation in Africa is Vincent Opyene. Vincent has single-handedly changed how Uganda addresses the illegal wildlife trade. He risks his life on a daily basis to combat wildlife trafficking and to bring criminals to justice. His persistent, silent, unique work behind the scenes to address wildlife crime on the street and in the courtroom is making a real and significant difference.

Dr Pete Morkel was awarded the Prince William Award for Conservation in Africa – for a lifetime of selfless dedication to wildlife conservation throughout the continent. Dr Morkel delivered a very moving speech on the challenges ahead and the unsung heroes in conservation. You can view it in the video further down.

During a speech, William said: "The clock is ticking towards a tipping point when the impact of what we are doing will become dangerously irreversible. Whether we are living in an urban or rural environment, nature matters to us all. We have a responsibility and an obligation to the next generation to drastically reduce the extent to which we plunder the planet’s natural resources. I am convinced that we have it in our power to reverse this trend. As the late Paul Allen, a great conservation philanthropist, said: ‘As long as we work together – with urgency and determination – there is no limit to what we can achieve.'"

Ahead of black-tie events, it's always fun to see your fashion predictions on the blog and social media. When contemplating repeats, one gown is invariably mentioned time and time again. Tonight the wish of many a royal fashion follower was granted when Kate brought back the beautiful teal Jenny Packham Aspen gown she debuted in 2012 for the 'Our Greatest Team Rises' Olympic gala. This is one of my all-time favourite Kate gowns (right up there with the black velvet McQueen Kate wore for the Sun Military Awards). It was splendid to see it again tonight.

The show-stopping style combines an emerald lace bodice embellished with Swarovski crystals and a pleated skirt, ribbon waisted with a crystal and flower decoration.

One of the primary reasons the gown remained so popular is owed to its intricately detailed embellished back. It encapsulates several of the design elements which made Packham a household name in bridal fashion.

Kate carried the matching bespoke Packham clutch once again.

As in 2012, Kate teamed the gown with her Jimmy Choo Vamp Sandals (another reader favourite, chosen countless times during our 'Styling Kate' feature).

Kate accessorised with the Queen's diamond chandelier earrings.

And her Women of the First World War Poppy Brooch. The £29.99 piece is described: "Designed exclusively for the Centenary year, this stunning brooch adds a vintage feel to the classic two petal enamel poppy. Plated with a gold tone and hand finished with brilliant baguette crystals, this charming brooch is the perfect way to support the Royal British Legion." The brooch has proven very popular with the royal ladies, the Duchess of Cornwall was also spotted wearing it.

************

In addition to tonight's black-tie event, a documentary marking Prince Charles' 70th birthday aired on BBC One. Indeed, the footage included a very special surprise: a photo of a smiling Kate holding a giggling Prince Louis as granddad Charles adoringly looks at Louis. This is the first photo we've seen of the little Prince since his christening, and I very much hope it's the first of several we'll see in the coming week for Charles' birthday. The photo was taken by Chris Jackson in the grounds of Clarence House in September. Upon first glance, I thought it was a photo of George when he was a baby; Louis certainly does resemble his big brother at the same age.

More from the Express:

'The BBC documentary shed a new light on Prince Charles, described as a playful grandfather by Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, who showered her husband with loving words. Speaking about what Charles usually does with his grandchildren, she said: “He will get down on his knees and crawl about with them for hours, you know making funny noises and laughing and my grandchildren adore him, absolutely adore him. “He reads Harry Potter and he can do all the different voices and I think children really appreciate that.”
Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, praised so much Prince Charles’s grandfatherly skills he went as far as scolding him for working too much rather than spending time with his children. When asked by Mr Bridcut if his father has enough time to be a grandfather, he said: “I think he does have time for it, but I would like him to have more time with the children. “I think he’s… now he’s reached his 70th year it’s a perfect time to consolidate a little bit cause as most families would do, you are worried about having them around and making sure their health’s okay, and he’s the fittest man I know but equally I want him to be fit until he’s 95 you know going on.'

The talented UFO No More team believe Kate wore the Alessandra Rich Pleated polka-dot silk crepe de chine midi dress. The £1,225 piece is described: "Alessandra Rich was inspired by Alfred Eisenstaedt's 1945 photograph of a sailor kissing a stranger in Times Square for her Spring '18 collection. Capturing the essence of that iconic moment, this vintage-inspired dress is cut from polka-dot silk crepe de chine that falls to a pleated midi skirt." As several of you noted, Abigail Spencer wore the dress to the royal wedding in May.

That evening, William and Kate will join the Queen and other royals for a a service to mark the Centenary of the Armistice at Westminster Abbey at 6pm. The service will be televised on BBC One.
  • 14 November - The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will visit South Yorkshire. Great to see Kate repeating this beautiful dress. As we are aware of how humans are destroying what little remains of the natural world with our ever increasing appetite for new things I think it's important for the royals to become role models for making the most out of the garments we already have. I'd love to see Kate and Meghan in only a few new outfits a year as we do with Princess Anne.

    1. I agree. An updo shows off the neckline and sleeves better (and also the jewels in her ears!)

    2. In 2012 Kate didn't have children yet and I would imagine the kind of updo she wore with this dress in back then requires a lot of time that she currently doesn't have, with a six month old and two young kids running around.

      Delete
    3. Pam, that’s generous of you but you’re forgetting about all of the staff she has to help her. It doesn’t do anyone any good to forget that she has nannies and help with chores. A regular mom, sure. But this mom has help! And a hairdresser! Even though I’d also have liked an updo better with this dress so we could see her poppy, her hair is still beautifully done and likely professionally blown out and styled.

      Delete
    4. I assume she wore it down simply because that is the look she wanted for tonights engagement. Wearing it down might have taken as much preparation as an updo.

      Delete
    5. She always tries to differentiate different wears. So obviously she needed different hair this time.

    6. I’ve always wondered if Kate is a headache sufferer. She wears her hair down far more than up (I think, that’s what it seems like). As a headache and migraine sufferer myself anytime my hair is up I can only go a few hours before the headache creeps in. I also had horrible nausea during my pregnancies. The doctor at the time told me this is common with a migraine history as sights/sounds/smells are triggers for your body anyway, so if any of those things make you nauseous not pregnant, pregnancy could be very challenging. She’s never said anything so I don’t mean to armchair diagnose, but I’ve picked up on a few things about her that are similar to my experience.

    7. I had meant that if I know as much about Kate that I think I do, it's likely her choice to spend more time of her day with the children and less time getting ready for an event, regardless of how much help she may have. Anyway, I think they still have only the one nanny, unless they do have more and I just haven't heard about it.

Me thinks she likes her hair down, any woman's prerogative.

    9. She does get to spend more time with the kids because she doesn’t need to do the chores her staff can help her with. Her life still has lots of responsibility but she will have more time for family etc. Because she doesn’t need to do lots of the ordinary organizing etc. She looks so beautiful, as always.

    1. The word is cummerbund :) It comes from the Indo-Persian kamarband. I hope you don’t mind me saying- I’m Indian and love to share things about my culture.

I agree they should be wearing them, or should have their jackets buttoned as they walk around. This looks somewhat unfinished. I also loved this dress the first time around, and wish she had an updo this time too!

      Delete
    2. Thanks Anon! I haven't ever typed that word and of course this is what auto-correct came up with. Imho, a tux without a cummberbund is just a black suit with a bow tie, nothing special.

      Delete
    3. I should have guessed it was autocorrect! And I totally agree about the suit and bow tie. Considering how much effort ladies put in for black tie events, I don’t think a cummerbund is too much to ask for...

      Delete
    4. How interesting to learn that tidbit about the cummerbund, Anon. Thank you! I agree, adding it would have been a nice touch. I regret the continuing trend toward more informality.

      Delete
    5. When you think of all the time and trouble the ladies put up with to get "dressed up" the men could certainly take 3 extra seconds and put on a cummerbund. And maybe use an interesting kerchief instead of a plain white one. Come on guys put some effort into your look!

@Anon, I just looked up Kamarband on google and my goodness those waist chains are simply gorgeous!! I love how they accentuate the waist and the hips, so feminine!! Thanks again for sharing this interesting information.

I am seeing the cummerbund as slowly going out of fashion at formal events I observe in the newspapers. The last time my husband bought a tux , 2013, he was encouraged by the men’s store to wear a vest or just keep the jacket buttoned

I loved the updo in 2012 but that was back when she had a much better hairstylist. If it is her current hair stylist it will just be the same old bulky chignon in a hairnet and we've seen that more than enough.

    2. Your not old Virginia, most men do wear cummerbunds. Additionally, men who often wear tux for dinner parties and special events have a nice collection of colors and plaids. Perhaps a generation thing! Kate looks nice but I really appreciated this dress the first time around with her hair up.

  49. Kate looks beautiful and I love the blue polka dot dress!! I have a question on a serious note...does anyone know if Kate is double jointed or something like that, because I often notice that the backs of her elbows turn out when she walks instead of the front side of her arm. Also if you look at the 11th image of her pictured in the green dress, you will clearly see two little joints or knots(for the lack of a better word) on either side of her elbow. 1. Good catch Denise! Whether Kate does it intentionally or not, she channels some of Diana's looks very well!! Love this polka dot dress and it's certainly Kate's style. What a lovely picture and Kate is a beautiful mother. So wishing that Diana could have met Kate and seen her grandchildren. cc

  53. This has never been my favorite gown, something about the too fussy sleeve, the shiny sides of the bodice and the glare from the lining. I do love the plunging front bodice and the pleating, and the way it fits Kate. Please, Kate, push your hair back from that beautiful and meaningful brooch!

Such a nice picture of Prince Charles with Kate and Louis, and very interesting to hear William say that Charles needs more time with the children. That perhaps offsets some of the old rumors.

Veterans Day in the US (which honors all military veterans) and Remembrance Sunday in the UK fall on the same day this year. The actual 100th anniversary of the WWI Armistice, which occurred at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, it will be a very poignant day of observance.

  54. As much as I adored this gown the first time around, I do not care for it this time. Having her hair down makes a much bigger difference that I would have expected and takes so much away from the gown for me.

  55. Splendid!! My favourite dress - and even if that hairdo is less advantageous, still a huge win! I truly hope that both Kate and Megan will re-wear more of their beautiful outfits. We all really need to do something for this planet, if we want our children and grandchildren to still enjoy it. Keeping my fingers crossed that the two duchesses will lead the way.

  57. I was wondering about this dress and if the Duchess would ever wear it again. I'm glad she did since it's a gorgeous dress, and one the best gowns that she's worn, but I prefer how she looked in it the first time, back in 2012. I think the up-do hairstyle of 2012 versus the loose hairstyle of tonight makes the difference of how she looks in it. Other than commenting on her look, this was a commendable event for an important cause, but I can see how it causes controversy, considering that the Royal Family goes shooting on Boxing Day, and other days that most of the public doesn't know of. But it does seem as though both the Duchess and the Duke care about the Tusk Trust efforts to stop poaching.

  60. Love Kate's look at the Tusk awards, and I also really like that Alessandra Rich dress she's wearing with Louis in her arms playing with his grandpa. I'm trying to imagine Charles down on the floor or ground, crawling around with grandchildren. Nope. I need to see him in casual clothes first! It has been a long, long time since I've seen a picture of him in anything but a suit or kilt or ceremonial garb. Still, it's a nice thing to try to imagine. Camilla says he's great with her grandchildren, and I'm sure he's thrilled with his own even more so. Looking forward to watching the entire video of Charles at 70.

  61. Squeal!! I love this dress and am excited to see it worn again! Kate looks fantastic. I do think I prefer the dress with her hair back, but also appreciate she wanted to try something new with this dress. Good for a rewear at an event about conservation.

Grandpa Charles! That pic is cute! It would be amazing to see some portraits released of him with the grandkids, like the Queen did. I would also love to see an engagement with him, William, and George, though for security reason, that would probably never happen. But I would love to see the interactions.

  62. This is one of my all time favourite Kate gowns! So glad we got another look. I preferred the look for its first outing though, if I am being honest. It just looked more amazing with her hair up, and we could see that neckline and more of the lace back. Also, in some photos this time it looks like the fit is slightly out in the bust area. It feels like it should have been bought up half an inch and tightened a teeny bit. Could be as simple as different undergarments or the change in that area that happens with pregnancy and nursing (trust me I know that feeling at the moment!).
Also would have loved to see a bracelet- just the earrings and her wedding rings feels a bit plain.
Love the shoes, so glad she wore these again.
She and William are on point together at this event!

  63. I like her hair down so much better, so flattering, as is the rich color. The vintage glamour helps me get past so much going on with pleats, gathers, intricate lace, shiny side inserts and glittery belt. Think Rita Hayworth: Kate owns it. She looks much more comfortable and beautiful in her skin than that rather tense woman six years ago.
Conservation of wildlife and their habitat is critical to the health of our planet. So glad William has made this a focus.
Sorry to learn shipping to the States doubles the price of that lovely poppy pin. I want that! Maybe with a Christmas bonus.

  65. This has always been my favorite dress and had hairdressers try to replicate her original chignon for my cousins wedding and my graduation. I do wish she had worn hair at least half back so we could see the delicate neckline in front better and the poppy brooch. I miss her old hairdresser, her updos have not been as good since. LOVE this dress so jealous of what amazing shape she is in.

  66. Kate really redefines "getting one's figure back!" The gown's colour and the gorgeous lace back are the two things I love about it. I would like to see a full view of the blue polka dot dress on Kate as well, but her height would carry it off beautifully.

Ahhhh! One of my favorite gowns on Kate! She is stunning! William looked quite handsome himself! She and William look so good working as a team. It’s always a treat to see them together!

What a precious picture of Prince Charles with Prince Louis. Charles seems very happy and relaxed. I do hope he takes the time to enjoy his beautiful grandchildren. It is a gift to spend time with your grandparents. I loved what William had to say. Happy early birthday to HRH. I hope he is enjoying all the wishes and celebrations.

I love this dress so much! I have been waiting for this repeat. I even love her hair down for this event. I think it matches the formality of the Tusk Awards and also makes it quite obvious it is a rewear when looking at photos of both wearings of the dress. I love seeing Will and Kate together. They are so in sync with each other and so comfortable in each others presence. Now we need rewears of the black velvet and the lilac McQueen!!

  72. I love love love this dress and waited for a comeback for years. That being said, i don't like this specific reappearance at all. Hair down with this dress just does not work. It takes away all the magic. If you have these intricate details on shoulders and back, you have to show it off, Girl! It is basically your duty to do so, with a dress like this ;D.

    Really too bad.

  74. A beautifully done post - I enjoyed reading it all.

I agree with those who wish Kate would have worn her hair up - perhaps in a different way than before - this dress seems to demand it with the beautiful back and it would have allowed the poppy to show - that is something Kate needs to watch because letting her hair cover it isn't good. I used to love those half-up, half-down looks - suppose that was a former hairdresser but it wouldn't seem that hard to replicate. But seeing a repeat of this favourite gown is lovely.

I've wanted to see Alessandra Rich as a designer for either Kate or Meghan - and was pleased to see Pippa wearing one of her looks. I love this dot dress and maybe, just maybe, it is a subtle hint about Diana - interesting Kate was wearing it in a photo with Charles! It's very sweet to read about him with children - but we are hearing more about him with Camilla's grandchildren. For me it's all a bit of inevitable propaganda - after the 'Diana' year last year - so admit I'm not paying too much attention to it. I accept Charles' place but don't find much joy in reading about him.
It's all a little ironic for me because I did a Diana replicate with her blue dot dress - I had the blue and white court pumps like Diana and trimmed a little white jacket with the blue dot material - very eighties! The outfit started for work - than oddly became my 'funeral' dress when I didn't wear black and was so associated with that, I didn't wear it for anything else. (I was almost as slim as Kate in those days.) So there was a sense of 'in memoriam' when I saw Kate in this photo - not inappropriate for this time of year. I must go look for my Diana books now - I recall the Tim Graham photo of Diana at her desk but I think she did have the white jacket too. I suppose my version is still in the back of a wardrobe - it should go to a charity shop along with a lot of those other eighties things - they're back in fashion in theory but on me - if I could squeeze into them - they'd just look dated - like Anne does in her revivals - bless her!

I love the Jenny Packham Gown, Kate was stunning, it's my favorite Evening dress that duchess has, I agree, she was beautiful even with this hair, but I must agree, that dress require a updo, It would work much better with her hair up, this dress has amazing details in neckline and back, it hide these details.
