Duchess Kate in Opulent Gold Erdem Gown for Black-Tie Dinner

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge concluded Day One of their Royal Tour of Sweden and Norway with a black-tie dinner at the Residence of the British Ambassador, attended by Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, representatives from government and popular culture.

William and Kate have been staying at the British Ambassador's residence since they arrived in Sweden on Monday night. Following a busy day in Stockholm, it was back to the residence just in time to change.

Before dinner, the Duke and Duchess met Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven and his wife Ulla Löfven.

Rebecca noted the photo in the background is a picture of the Queen with King Carl XVI Gustaf taken some years ago - a very nice touch.

William and Victoria appear to be getting along famously. I mentioned earlier, as a future King and Queen, they are both in incredibly unique positions. They will both reign at the same time and oversee changes and the challenges of modernising. I do hope this trip is the start of a lifelong friendship between both couples.

An overview of the dinner.

According to People: "Guests dined on a starter of Scottish smoked salmon with quail egg, horseradish cream on a bed of salad, followed by guinea fowl with stir-fried vegetables and mashed potatoes. For dessert, they enjoyed blackberry soufflé with chocolate ganache, before a selection of British cheeses."

The Duchess selected the Erdem Stephanie Gown for her first evening event of the tour. The silk dress comes in opulent gold Winterbourne print satin. The dress features jewel-tone florals, an Edwardian high collar, button-down bodice, bell sleeves, a trimmed skirt with a gathered hem, and a detachable belt.

A closer look at the print.

Erdem

Kate's dress is sold out, but the Stephanie remains available in black floral print. The £1,945 piece is described: "Erdem envisions 1940s silhouettes with floral patterns – in this case, passion flowers – lifted from traditional Japanese screens for Resort 2018, and this black silk crepe de Chine Stephanie dress is the result. The bodice is shaped with a ruffled stand collar and cropped sleeves that end in gathered ruffle bell cuffs, bound to swing with every step." It's available at Matches, Harvey Nichols, My Theresa and Barneys New York.

And Diana's triple-strand pearl bracelet.

It looks like Kate wore her Gianvito Rossi burgundy suede pumps.

Net-A-Porter

And a new burgundy clutch. Middleton Maven suggests it is a version of the Jimmy Choo Celeste.

Judging by the reaction, the Erdem Stephanie gown will go down in the annals of Kate's sartorial choices...and not for positive reasons. When I saw the first photo, I suspected it would be a polarizing piece. A number of factors come into play as to why this one just didn't seem to work tonight, and the low lighting at the dinner made it incredibly difficult for media present (apparently there was unhappiness about it). Instead of photographing the dark hue it is in the product shots, it came out looking a shade of mustard. I'm a big fan of Erdem's, however it must be acknowledged the majority of his designs are busy to say the least. When one takes the gown with the floral print, bell sleeves and high neck there's a significant amount going on. For me though, it's the bottom portion of the skirt that really takes from the overall look and detracts from what could have been an elegant kimono style dress. I'm going to make a wild guess the Stephanie shall not fare too well in the post tour poll...

It reminds me of the debacle surrounding the Erdem Alouette Gown Kate wore. I said at the time, while it wasn't Kate's best look, it was good to see her trying something new and experimenting with fashion; the same applies tonight.

It's been a packed day with several different events. If you're just joining us, William and Kate kicked off the tour with a spot of bandy hockey in snowy Stockholm; click here to view the post. In the afternoon, the couple enjoyed lunch at the Royal Palace and carried out engagements and a walkabout with Victoria and Daniel. Click here to read the post!

A look at tomorrow's schedule:

Wednesday, 31 January - Stockholm -

  • William and Kate, accompanied by Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, will begin the morning at the world-famous Karolinska Institute, which accounts for over 40 per cent of the medical academic research conducted in Sweden. The Duke and Duchess will meet with leading scientific researchers and practitioners to discuss ground-breaking academic work in developmental psychology, and Sweden’s approach to managing mental health challenges, including the impact of physical activity on mental health. Their Royal Highnesses will also hear about the Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM) programme run by the National Association for Suicide Research and Prevention of Mental Ill Health (NASP). YAM is a programme run for 14 to 16-year-olds promoting increased knowledge about mental health through dialogue and role-play, and now operates internationally, including in the UK.
  • The Duke and Duchess and Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel will then head to Matteusskolan, a comprehensive school in the heart of the city centre. Their Royal Highnesses will join children who have taken part in the YAM programme during one of their mental health activity sessions, and will speak to the mentors who run the training.
  • That afternoon, the two Royal couples will visit one of Sweden's leading department stores – NK – to open an interactive exhibition of UK design, fashion and brands that operate in Sweden. The Duke and Duchess will learn how these brands in particular put innovation, technology and sustainable practices at the forefront of their businesses. The event will take place in NK's entrance hall, and for the duration of the exhibition the best of British brands will feature in the display windows of the store.
  • From NK, Their Royal Highnesses will travel to Haga Palace, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel's official residence, for a private tea with the royal couple.
  • On their last evening in Stockholm, the Duke and Duchess will attend an event at the Fotografiska Gallery, which at night boasts glittering views over Stockholm. The event will be a celebration of contemporary culture with guests representing the worlds of music, film, television, theatre, tech, dance, art and sport, with live music, drinks and canapés. The Duke will also deliver a speech at this event. Weather permitting, they will travel to Fotografiska by boat, allowing the Duke and Duchess to take in the views of Stockholm by night as they pass around the harbour.  Prior to joining the reception, the Royal couple will have a short tour of the gallery's latest exhibition by UK photographer Nick Veasey.

Did you enjoy Day One of the tour? :)

Oooh, I predict another very divided opinion on this look. It's very 70s. I can't say I think it is a dress I would describe as "pretty" but the whole dress is very much a fully completed "look" and I like that. I think she's very pretty in the colour. I think I might quite like it. I quite liked her "dust ruffle patterned" erdem she wore previously as well! I like that the dresses makes a statement and is not meant to be just "pretty". Wearing something like this that has a clear "precense" is bound to get more hate/love than going safe, and I think that is why I like it. Because while it wouldn't be a choice of mine, it's a clear CHOICE and I love that about it!

This is all from the first peek sit-down shot so I look forward seeing her standing and the details (hair, jewelry!)

Also, I'm pretty sure the wife's name is Ulla, not Sulla :P Another of KPs (too frequent...) mistyping.

Perfectly said, Rebecca! It is a bold choice, so it will stand out. I personally would not have picked the dress, but somehow, Kate looked beautiful in it. Maybe it's her elegant hair or her demeanor. Or her smile. There's just something that makes it right!

    2. You called this one correctly, Rebecca. I was a fan of the last Erdem and quite like this one too. So nice to see her veer from the type of dress she usually wears to something as sophisticated and artistic as this. Really a very stunning choice.

    3. Rebecca - Sweden30 January 2018 at 23:12

I think that it's so artistic and "eccentric aristocrat" is what makes me like it. The dinner looks almost Downton Abbey-ish and this look just fits in to this feeling of interesting famous and rich and interesting people having a glamorous but semi-relaxed dinner. So I like the feeling of the dress even though I might not like the dress (I don't dislike it, just it's a few elements too many)

    3. I have to agree with you anonymous. I don't quite understand Kate's aversion to maternity wear / styles. I predict that she's about 6 months along now and even if she couldn't find a maternity gown for herself, she could have had one made.

A loose-fitting flowing maternity gown in a jewel tone would have worked beautifully here. Sorry Kate!

    4. Oh, no! That's terrible, in particular comparing to the gown of Victoria...

    5. Oh...! I was sooooo looking forward to seeing Kate in maternity evening gowns on this tour, as we've hardly seen any in the past. So I've just raced upstairs after eating to grab a glimpse of the first one and, like you two, I can't find the words to express how disappointed I am by this choice.

The gold colour may be a nod to the Swedish flag, but I don't think this shade does her complexion any favours at all, and the big floral pattern combined with the ruffles just makes me think of 1970s curtains and sofa covers - and not in a good way!

This is the very first thing she's worn in 2018 that I've really disliked. Erdem is very hit and miss for me on Kate - generally, I either love it or hate it, with no middle ground. I'm desperately hoping that tomorrow I can do some 'jumpy claps' as one commenter (sorry, I can't remember who it was) wrote on the Meghan blog when the engagement was announced! I just love that mental image and I use the phrase all the time now, so thanks to whoever it was (hope you don't mind me pinching it!).

    9. Agree! This is one ugly dress.

    10. I don't like the ruffle in the bottom, but I would not call it ugly at all. It's flows beautifully and Kate definitely carries it well.

    11. I have to 100% agree, this Erdem dress/gown is so horrible. There are just no words to describe it. It doesn't help that it also has a choking neck. I'm sorry but makes Kate look awful. Doesn't anyone let her know how something might look. Victoria looks beautiful even though I'm not fond of her attire. A huge disappointment.

      Delete
    12. Sadly I also agree it is suffocating & just plain not at all pregnancy friendly! The long sleeves, high neck, tie at the waist & ruffled hem what more could have been included!! I wish Kate would wear maternity designs I am sure there are some lovely pieces out there she could choose. 😕

    16. This dress is beyond description!!! Why why why??? Who thought this was a good choice on any woman? I love Kate, but never want to see this again. Why does Kate always button up so tight. She’s so beautiful, with a beautiful swan like neck, show a little Kate!!!

    17. Tonight's Erdem gown reminds me of the blue and red pattern Erdem gown Kate wore to the 100 Women in Hedge Fund banquet in 2015, which was so frilly and childlike in its design. But this mustard gown is even worse and it swings into a Victorian relic fashion statement. Her hairstyle looks sever, which does her no favors and her make-up looks harsh, although it could be the lighting. Both of these gowns are out of sync with the respective events. This can be seen when compared to other ladies' attire. With so many beautiful gowns, including maternity to choose from, this is a total miss, as though she didn't get the memo.

      Delete
    18. I agree with all of the above. WHY Catherine! Is she trying on purpose to look terrible. Hate to say it but I think I am over her.

  7. Loved all her looks from today except for this. Gosh, what a mess. The color and print don't compliment her. And the design is typical Erdem (which is not a compliment :) ). I am not an Erdem fan and this demonstrates why. Why oh why the dust ruffle on the bottom? There is nothing I like about this dress. It is all a big fail. I think Victoria looks nice here. 1. Ahhhh! Annette, I think you nailed it! I had wondered when we might see something more as a nod to Sweden, other than the top from this morning. I do believe the gold is elegant & does offset the beauty of the mostly blue flowers. I also feel (& Rebecca you could clarify this for me) that there can be lots of floral designs in Swedish Clothing? I remember one of our friends was explaining to us, at my brother's home in Austria, that the floral designs woven into all the sweaters & ski pull overs we were wearing were to remind everyone during the long dark winters, of the beauty of the Alpine Flowers. So I wonder if it's historically the same in Sweden? If so, then I think Kate's dress is very regal with the gold silk & the blue flowers & gives a nod to Swedish design & colors. But, I'm still mulling it over. Hmmm.

  16. Oh man, I typically refrain from Kate criticism, but WHY the prairie ruffle. I cannot stand such a wide ruffle at the bottom of a dress. I think this dress would be much improved without that. The fabric is lovely, and it sits well on her figure, but that ruffle is just horrible, especially with bell sleeves and ruffles elsewhere.

The color I think is really nice on her, and in the photos of her sitting, it looks nice enough. *sigh*

It looks really beautiful on paper, but I think she should have chosen the black version of it, it would have been a fashion hit for me. This is probably the ugliest colour in the colour spectrum. And while I love Erdem’s day wear their evening wear uhm...
But like Rebecca said this is the kind of look you will either love or hate.
I am just interested in the dress code. Kate almost look over-dressed compared to the other women, but it is black-tie and the men are wearing tuxedo’s. Wouldn’t that imply that the women wear full length evening dress?

    ReplyDelete
  21. Its unfortunate that who ever is advising her dresser that they do not inform her that more often then not at black tie dinner parties ladies wear cocktail dresses. White tie events mandates floor length attire, not black tie. Possibly a British thing. Watching the video every lady is fashionably dressed except Kate. I bet we never see this dress again. At end of tour voting I will be surprised if this fashion statement receives votes.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, its completely acceptable to wear a floor length gown to a black tie event. The gown is just usually more casual than it would be for a white tie event. This is not a formal gown at all and completely appropriate for this event. Besides, why should she be dressed like everyone else in the room. She's the DoC and a guest of honor. She should stand out from the rest.

  27. Ah darn I am disappointed. I was looking forward to this and this dress is a complete miss for me! That yellowish/not a nice gold background color is awful. I also don't like the random line at the bottom. It reminds me of her flowered dress she wore to an event that wasn't hit or miss with viewers, and I didn't like that one either. It reminds me of "Japanese style" I can't think of the dress name, someone help me out lol. Kimono print? Something that would have been more fitting when they were in Thailand(thought I still don't love the colors) Oh well! Maybe the next evening gown I will like! 30. I think Kate looks beautiful, but the design of the dress detracts from the beauty of the fabric. The ruffles are distracting, and keeps the florals from being the main focus. However, I think the four of them look great together, and Kate's dress is a relief from the all black of the other three, and therefore very complementary. All together, what an elegant tableau!

  31. I'm sorry but this looks like an overall miss to me. There's too much going on, and I don't think the mustard color goes well with her skin tone or with what others are wearing. However, bravo Kate for trying something so bold! That's part of the fun with fashion isn't it? Not every try is a hit. Also, I'd like to say how lovely I think she looks when she is pregnant. Her face fills out beautifully and she simply glows. Thanks Charlotte for the excellent coverage! It's been such a fun day checking the blog for updates!

  32. I dislike the ruffle at the bottom of the dress intensely. She once wore a dress like this before (also by Erdem, which has some very nice pieces otherwise) and I disliked it just as much. I do like the colour, pattern and sleeves and think it would be a very nice dress if you took away the ruffle at the bottom and the ones on the upper part of dress and put and put a clean V-neckline in instead.

Yes! It feels cluttered with the fabric and the ruffles. One of them has to go. A less interesting, errr busy, fabric would work better if you want to keep the frills and ruffles. Or keep the fabric and make it a more streamlined look. You definitely nailed what my issue with the dress is.

  33. I would prefer this dress in the black version. Although probably the gold version is substantially better in person and does not photograph well. Also, in the videos, it moves beautifully. Catherine looks so slim and barely pregnant. In the end after the first shock, I find I like the drama of the dress. It makes a statement of elegance, position and status. I give it a thumbs up 👍

For the most part, I usually like everything Kate wears but I am not a fan of this dress ~ I particularly do not like the ruffle at the bottom. It looks a bit better in black. 36. I sooo wanted tonight's choice to be a Wow look ! But, sadly I feel a little disappointed. In the initial photos of her sitting, she looked quite lovely, but then in the photos of them standing, and it could be the harshness of the flashes, she looked washed out, and the colours of the gown, add to the lack of lustre. I'm not a fan of her hair being so harshly pulled back. A softer updo, would soften the look.

So I maybe in the minority but I think this is stunning and totally appropriate to the black tie dinner. Everyone else seems to be cocktail dress but I think this is “casual” evening look with a bit of pizazz. I’m not a great fan of erdem generally but it’s a beautiful pattern and colour on her ( I don’t think the photography does it justice maybe because the lighting isn’t good for the photographers and so they’re either dark images or badly flash-lit .

For those saying should should of worn black, as most ladies are - fair point. But how many times have we asked her to step out of her comfort zone away from the black. I applaud her trying something a bit out there. The up do and earrings give it an extra touch of class. She looks stunning and very regal.

    1. As I pointed out elsewhere, this dinner is at the British Ambassador's house, thus British "soil". That makes the British government and the Cambridge the hosts. It was excellent that Catherine wear a statement/hostess dress rather than a cocktail dress.

    2. Agreed Suzanne, she's hosting and leading the evening so why not go with something a little different. I think again it's a nod to the colours of Sweden too - that's such a Kate thing. I love it but can see the polarisation it may cause after the Erdem gown in the past.

Despite us all thinking that fashion is one complete unifying thing we have in the world and we all follow the same trendsI think countries and cultures still have their own nuisances - what's fashionable here in the UK maybe not seen as fashionable elsewhere. From travelling around one can usually spot nationalities through types of colours or style even though we think we're all one fashionable lot - so we're all bound to have different styles and tastes.

I see that the dress has taken over comments - where i was noticing she was wearing the Diana's pearl bracelet again as well as the earrings?

This exactly right Suzanne, this was not a formal gown situation and it is a British event, just like the time she turned up in the red "peasant" dress everyone hated at a British embassy party. She is more the "hostess" than the guest, it is meant to be friendly territory, and if she is comfortable in it, everyone else there should be, too.

The dress reminds me a bit of the tour to Bhutan. OK, why not? Kate looks great in it. Perhaps she wanted to look especially festive in honour of their hosts. So she chose something unusual and special, a step from her usual style. As she is pregnant and probably finds it difficult to select the right clothes for different occasions, I think the only important thing is whether she herself feels comfortable in it, and from the way she walks and smiles, I think she does.

  42. ....Wow, I am...torn...on this one. I like the gold in the stock photo, but hate it on Kate under those lights. Good for her for choosing a BOLD print, but it's not very flattering, in my opinion. I think the black version would have looked better. Also, I don't think her updo compliments the ensemble, either. I really love that Kate experimented with something out-there and printed, but overall, it's pretty much a miss for me, I think.

  43. I think part of the problem is that the gold isn't a true gold under those lights...it shifts to more of an unflattering green-gold, like the color your hair turns when it's been dyed by the pool chlorine.

Hahah, I agree Louise. People saying "why didn't anyone tell her how she looked?" or saying it's a misstep is kind of... odd :P I get it that most people say it in a non-literal way but to me it is so wierd that people expect Kate to dress after their own style. Is this dress something I would wear? Absolutely not. Do I think Kate looks pretty in it? Yes, but she has prettier dresses. Does me not likeing her dress much make it a mistake? NO! She likes it, it is proper and fitting for the occation. People can scream that it's horrible all they like, because they have full right to think it looks horrible just as Kate has full right to like it. Maybe she'll like it a long time, maybe she'll regret it soon. Who knows. But does it really matter? (Not saying we shouldn't comment on clothes, not at all! Dislike a clotheing choice all you want! But someone having a different clothes style than you don't make what they're wearing "wrong"). Sorry if I sound a bit too serious, I know most people use these kind of words in an exaggerated way in this context, I do it too. Just rambling on now :P

  52. What a lovely evening! Again, so nice to see the laughing & inside looks passing between Will & Kate & Victoria & Daniel. :) I don't know what I think about Kate's dress yet. If I'm correct, I believe that Scandinavian Royals tend to wear a lot more floral dresses, like Victoria did today. When Kate was sitting, I thought I'd know when I saw her stand up, but still nothing. Then I thought well once she starts moving I'll be able to tell what I think..... still nothing? Hmmmm.... 1. Yes, they do and I think that's important to point out :) While a royal's fashion always has to do with their personal taste, it is also always a reflection of the country they're from. I've often found, when I've visited a country whose royals I follow, it really shows you the country's influence on their fashion - just having a look at people on the streets and looking through clothing shops I noticed that.

  56. I am not crazy about this dress. I am not a fan of the Erdem dust ruffles on the bottom and I am not sure about the color/pattern. I am going to reserve final judgement when more high res pictures are available. I think I would have preferred the black print versus the yellow.

    ReplyDelete
  57. This gown would look better closeup than from further away, I think. The colors and fabric are gorgeous and, as someone pointed out earlier, reflect the blue and gold of Sweden's flag. But the wide ruffle at the hem doesn't work for me - I think it takes away from the elegance of the gown, and the overall appearance looks fussy to me.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I actually think this dress is good. It will look better if she's photographed with a plain background. I love the updo and minimal jewellery. I think she looks great - bold and confident. Thumbs up for that.

    ReplyDelete
  59. i think the colour is beautiful on Kate but there is just too much going on with the dress. that print didnt need ruffles. i also find it amazing that with a two thousand pound dress they havent made any effort to match the print on seams. this just detracts from the design and makes it look like badly hung wallpaper.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Whew... Um... ok. Here’s my take. The pattern and color would have worked well with a different cut of dress - if your complexion can compliment... gold... or if she had to have that awkward cut then a toned down color and pattern would have been a better choice. There is too much going on with this piece in my opinion and her beauty is lost in it. :(

Also, intentional or not, (with regards to the nature of the luxurious tone of the interior of The Embassy) as I watched them walking into dinner, I saw Kate with her back towards the room & facing us. Oh dear....this dress seems to be wearing Kate. I think the dress could have been saved had the neckline not been so high & frilly....perhaps more of a wrap-front style like her Beaulah dresses? I also think her hair is too severe looking. This dress called for a loose, slightly undone chignon with a vintage jeweled comb or something.

  74. I think Rebecca from Sweden nailed when she said this is a love it or leave it kind of look!! It does have a 70's bohemian vibe to it, more along the lines of "Kate at Ammner Hall" or something her friend Rose would wear. Perhaps this is Kate's sartorical nod to Sweden's colors with the gold and blue, IDK; but The tones of her dress look good against the backdrop of the Swedish palace with the golds and yellows. While not my favorite look, I think she looks regal and above all else, I applaud her choice. For all that we want Kate to dress for us, I think she dresses for herself and chooses her designers and styles accordingly. Her Erdem looks are always polarizing and this is no less a bold choice. As for Victoria, she looks beautiful and while I absolutely love the dress, I am not a fan of the sandals with the dress and dark stockings. Both Kate and Victoria are very beautiful women who have lovely smiles and a very warm presence.

So very happy to see the four of them get on with each other like it appears that they do. Looks like a lovely time for them in Sweden. cc

It’s not my favourite look, but I’m not going to jump to hate. There are elements of the dress that are nice, and she is trying something different that doesn’t emphasize her growing bump too much.

Also I am biased because the dress shares my name.
This is a dress I could see Princess Mary wearing.

I appreciate the nod to the Swedish colours. However, I think her people let her down here, as they did with the red McQueen off the shoulder, as most seem to be in cocktail length dresses. Also, it doesn’t draw you to her face, the dress consumes the eye.

I do ike it better than victoria’s which is let down by the matronly stockings with shoes that look like bedazzled dance teacher’s shoes.

  92. This dress is anything but elegant. The style with all the ruffles calls to mind a grandmother's winter nightie. Kate usually exudes elegance and class. This look missed the mark.

  93. This dress would have fit right in with Mette-Marit's style for the Norway leg of the trip. It comes across as very "prairie" to me. I loved the last Erdem that was so controversial, but this color is kind of hideous. That being said, the overall style de-emphasizes her bump so maybe that was a motivator in choosing it. And Victoria? Ladybug, when did you last see black stockings + black sandals + a black dress in any fashion spread? Yikes. Much worse to me than Kate's dress.

  95. I kinda feel bad for her, because she is super overdressed (and the dress...ugh). The event is clearly not black tie, even though described as such. Someone on her team made a colossal mistake, though I can't really blame them. The dress itself is awful- in a sleeveless cocktail dress without ruffles, I think the fabric could be great, but it's just so jarring here. Kate does look pretty though, and the dress makes her look SO tall and slim- I forgot she was pregnant. Her midi dress from Canada (in maternity) would have been a good happy medium here. TBH, Kate doesnt look thrilled with the look compared to the attire of others.

  104. So beautiful!! Love this satinny number! They must be tired after this packed day.

  105. The dress if far from a disaster to me. It moves beautifully even if it doesn't photograph well with a busy background. Teamed with her hair, it makes her stand tall and confident. I like that Kate is making bold sartorial choices. And very few people can pull off this dress and I think she's one of them. P.S. It worked well with Diana's jewellery.

  106. Oh Charlotte, kudos to you for putting lipstick on the pig. I hope you get my meaning & it translate for other readers. I mean what is going on with that dress?!?! This is definitely the dress is dislike the most. The other Erdem is worlds way, a sleek look up top to balance the ruffle bottom, a good color combo & she looks stunning, confident in it.

Now this gold mustard debacle, with the unfortunate ruffle, the bell sleeves, the high neck, ruffle trim, completely smothered & covered with an awful color combo. Why Kate, why. You were on such a fashion high, and now, such a fashion low. Good thing this is a pregnant dress, hope we won’t see it again.

    Sorry this is soooi negative

  107. Love Kate but it is a complete NO.

  108. Ability to reach Duchess Kate is very limited here but I'll give this a try. I loved her look this morning and loved the green coat - the dress was too plain for my taste. Victoria truly looked the princess in her floral. A wonderful itinerary and happy crowds.

This evening - no. I don't mind Kate being a little more dressy than what the others wore - that's being a princess, but I simply find it an ugly dress - not a word I use too often. Even if the valences and sleeves were eliminated, that print's colour isn't good on Kate. It's not inappropriate - it's just a wrong choice - at least in my eyes, the sort of error I expect out of Maxima, not Kate. Victoria's dress is very sophisticated but I don't think it's a great look for her either. But I'm certain it was a lovely dinner.

  109. I do like the dress, but not for this occasion.. It doesn't look Black Tieish enough. Victoria's dress doesn't look that well either, it's all wrinkled from sittin down.

  110. For the first time ever, I am sorry to say that I loathe Kate’s choice. From the horrible colour, to the busy print, the frumpy neckline to the shiny material, it looks like something from the bad end of the 70s! Hope this never sees the light of day again. I can only assume our beautiful duchess’s pregnancy hormones came into play with this one! Annie, UK

  111. I don't like Erdem and have tried but I don't get most of the dresses. Actually, I don't like most of the patterns but I love this pattern. Wish it didn't have ruffles everywhere---I'm tired of that short sleeve with a flounce and don't like the dust ruffle effect. However, I bet she looked great in person! And I love the gold-ish color with this particular pattern.

  112. I just realized Erdem dresses remind me of the scene in Gone With The Wind when Scarlett makes a dress out of the draperies. ;)

As some have said, her hair was perfect for this dress but that's all that I like about the look. I wish Kate could wear sporty clothes and play sports with kids all the time because she just shines in situations like this morning's bandy hockey visit.

  113. I appreciate her taking a fashion risk. We’ve often criticized her for being a little boring. Unfortunately this dress is just so ugly to me. Maybe it is prettier in person, but she’s HAS to know that she will be photographed.

  114. Longtime reader and first post. I loved Kate's two outfits earlier today, but tonight not so much. I understand that the colors match the Swedish flag, but that is a difficult color for anyone to wear. It's odd that she seems to be the only woman in a long dress. Victoria has confused me all day. Her flowered dress seemed too much at lunch, bare legs in the walk and black tights and bedazzled shoes tonight? She's usually spot on and looks lovely.

Haha yeah. Yellow and blue together is very tricky!

  115. I have a feeling im in the minority tonight as I actually really like the dress.. and not just because we share a name haha! I love it when Kate takes fashion risks so I always support those looks versus some of her 'safer' or more boring looks, such as what she wore previously today. I don't think it helped the dress tonight that most of the women there chose simpler or shorter dresses, which made her choice standout even more. However I really applaud Kate choosing something more high fashion for a change.

  116. Well, I have to say that everybody's granny must have exquisite taste in fabric if this is reminding many of you of her curtains, upholstery and dressing gown etc. Its a very sophisticated, avant garde design so it will be polarizing and not every person's cup of tea but Im surprised most can't appreciate its artistry. If you look at the colors and design of the floral print, it really is a walking piece of art and so appropriate for hobnobbing with the movers and shakers of Swedish society. Also, the posters suggesting that it can't be fully appreciated until one watches the video are correct. It moves and catches the light beautifully- something that can't be discerned in a still photo. I came on here expecting the usual lace or ice blue beaded gown. You know, typical Kate, and got this amazing surprise. Times like this remind me of why I watch Kate. Every once in a while she pulls the most fantastic surprise out of the box and it is so worth it.

  117. And, Diana’s (now Kate’s) pearl accessories did not go with the gown at all. Not that ANYTHING would, but certainly not those two pieces.

On a positive note. (we need one, lol) Thank you Charlotte for including what was on the menu. I even knew what all the selections were. Everything sounded delicious.

I must say, while I go back and forth on if I like the dress, I LOVE it when she is sitting down. Looks really elegant. And did you guys notice the picture in the window in the sit down photo! It's Queen Elizabeth meeting King Carl Gustaf! Nice touch!
