The Cambridges Arrive for The Queen's Pre-Christmas Luncheon

As an avid royal watcher, I have come to appreciate the annual traditions upheld by the royals, not only in an official capacity, but in events where they come together as a family. Today, the Queen's annual pre-Christmas luncheon was held, a staple on the calendar heralding Christmas is merely days away.

The Cambridges were spotted departing Kensington Palace.

The Duchess was all smiles upon arrival.

A great shot of Kate and Charlotte.

The Queen hosts the fifty-strong luncheon every year for the entire extended family, many of whom are spending Christmas with their own children and grandchildren rather than joining the annual gathering at Sandringham. Her Majesty and Prince Philip are expected to make the journey to the Norfolk estate within the next couple of days, where they will settle in before welcoming their children, grandchildren and other relatives on Christmas Eve.

A closer look at Princess Charlotte wearing one of her signature bows :)

And Prince George in blue.

The Cambridges are no doubt making last minute preparations for the festivities before decamping to their country pile Anmer Hall on the Sandringham estate. This year, they are celebrating Christmas with the Royal family. Thanks to the close proximity of Anmer, it means they can come and go over the festive period. It has been widely reported Harry and Meghan will stay at Anmer over Christmas too.

The Duchess has attended the event every year since she and William became engaged in 2010. 2017 marks her eighth pre-Christmas luncheon. This year, there was a new addition, Prince Harry's fiancée Meghan Markle. You can read more about Meghan's appearance on my other blog.

Buckingham Palace was certainly dressed for the occasion with Nordmann Fir trees from Windsor Great Park presented in all their splendor.

I always look forward to seeing images of the Palace decorated in all its glory.

When we hear of George and Charlotte, we instantly think of William and Kate's little prince and princess, but did you know the Christmas tree tradition was introduced to Britain by Queen Charlotte, consort of King George III?

Chefs in the royal kitchens have been busy preparing traditional food and seasonal treats for the luncheon. The Palace shared a sneak peek behind the scenes.

More from the Royal Family website: "'Give yourself plenty of time,' says Royal Pastry chef Kathryn Cuthbertson. It's her number one tip to anyone making mince pies this Christmas. 'Pastry is not something that likes to be rushed,' agrees Chef de Partie, Victoria Scupham, who Kathryn hired six years ago to work alongside her. They also recommend 'having cold hands' when working with pastry, which will help keep it at the right consistency. Together they now have over 17 years experience inside the Royal Kitchens and will create over 1200 mince pies for each of the festive receptions held at the Palaces around Christmas time. 'It's probably thousands each,' laughs Kathryn, when asked for the exact calculation, 'but as long as you are organised, it's doable.'" You can view the recipe here.

Take a look at the chocolate roulade...

I imagine the Gingerbread men with white icing would be a big hit with George, Charlotte and the other children present.

William and Kate leaving the luncheon.

It ended at around 3 p.m. It looks like just in the nick of time for Charlotte to take a nap :)

There's a couple of additional photos of the children available on the Mail Online.

We have a rather good look at what Kate wore for the luncheon. It appears the Duchess selected a black cape and a burgundy dress.

Great Replikate suggests Kate wore the ZARA Long Cloth Cape. The cape features a round neckline, side vents, back pleat and lined button fastening at the neck.

Kate also wore a faux fur collar.

Kate M Cambridge believes it is the Jigsaw Women's Black Faux Fur Tippet. Kate worked for the company as an accessories buyer in 2007. Note, the velvet ribbon closure looks identical.

Several readers suggest Kate may have worn her GOAT Eloise dress underneath. It's a very good guess.

The Duchess wore a pair of statement earrings she's had in her collection since her pre-engagement days (with thanks to Sara).

Kate also chose them for the 2014 Christmas lunch.

Finally, The Royal Variety Performance aired last night. A young cast member from Annie asked Prince William to show off his best gallop, much to the delight of host Miranda Hart. Take a look at the video below and I suspect you'll agree William was the star of the show leaving the audience (and Kate) in stitches. Well done William for being such a good sport, he made the night :)

We'll see William and Kate on Christmas morning for the annual walk to Church.

    1. I agree Bluefire, Kate has a remarkable glow about her and I simply love her hair at this length - not too long, not too short but just enough length for that trademark volumous style. Her hair looks so healthy too, perhaps she has started using the magic potion also known as coconut oil. I swear by it!

If I may go a little off-topic here about the cute Princess in the back seat and her darling little signature bow... I giggle a bit whenever I see Charlotte with a bow in her hair because it reminds me of a colleague of mine who had a gorgeous little baby girl and when she brought the baby to visit us at work, everyone thought it was a boy. So long story short, my colleague, in her own subtle way, put a bow in the baby's hair every time she brought the baby to visit. The child is now 7 and still wears a little bow in her hair just in case anyone forgets :)

      Love Avee in SA

PS: I wonder if the queen passed down any of her patronages to Kate this year. If I'm not mistaken, I think it's usually done around this time

    2. I love that story, Avee! I think signature little bows are quite common with little girls. Remember Princess Estelle? Also Suri Cruise. She's a lot older now, and yet she still wears them. Some people find them tiresome, but I personally think they are sweet. Young girls are often dressed so mature for their age that it's nice to see little girls dressed as little girls.

As for Kate's hair.... it is truly to die for. I hope Charlotte inherits the hair gene.

    3. So true Suzie, I love the way Kate dresses Charlotte. Pretty floral dresses, cardigans, socks, shoes, it's just so sweet! I know what you mean about young girls being dressed too maturely for their age, I see it quite often myself. But I really enjoy seeing Charlotte's outifits because they don't look too fussy for a 2 year old, they're just right :)

    2. The children are adorable. It was also good to see other members of the family.

surfer girl, yes Meghan was there, as expected. Kate also attended when she was engaged. If I recall correctly it was very successful and she was beaming when she left two and a half hours later, sandwiched between William and Harry. I can't believe that was 7 years ago now!

    1. Pretty sure there are a fair amount of nannies there that entertains the kids in a nearby room when needed. Doubt William and Kate are the only ones in that family bringing the nanny :P

  7. I agree with you, Charlotte, that the royal family's annual traditions are some of my favorites to watch for each year. The Christmas lunch is one of the events I wish we got an inside look at (but sadly probably never will). It's not that the Queen doesn't deserve a private holiday party with her family, but I think, especially having read stories throughout the year (which I give little merit too but others might) about family discord, that a group photograph or even some candid photographs would be good PR.

    1. I would LOVE a photo from inside this event. I actually really, really, really want a big family picture of the royal family! Not to sound morbid, but it would fit well in the year Philip retired. I've been hoping for a while for a big family picture since the last one was for the Queen and Philips 60th anniversary (I think) and there has been alot of changes. I would especially love a picture of the family at this event since it's such a wide part of the family! One can always dream!

    2. Agreed. A family photo in Phillip’s retirement year would be perfect!

    3. 📷 Yay and Amen to that idea, Rebecca.
It seems like a logical thing to do. I SO hope they have that inspiration and follow through on it. Otherwise it would be a big missed opportunity and a page of history will be left bare.

    5. Or at the very least, the Queen/kids/grandkids. Maybe not some of the extended members who are out of the public eye. I would assume there is probably one taken. I know those have happened at my large family gatherings and there is no historical significance to my family.

    6. Possible Tinneke, but I think those are usually more the closer family and not a big family group portrait? But I might be wrong.

    7. I think maintaining a certain mystique is important for the Royal family. They already share so much of their lives with us that I'm okay with them having occasions that are very private. The more you give, the more people expect it to be the norm. They are not celebrities after all.

  20. I wish they would take a group photo for history's sake.

Looks like a wonderful event - looking at the car shots here and elsewhere, I believe most of the families with young children bring nanny, no doubt so parents can enjoy lunch. It would be so fun to see all the little ones together. What a noise there must be!

I'm don't think much of that fur tippet, Julia says, as she fingers the faux fur trimmed gloves she bought yesterday (so lovely and warm!) Hypocrisy aside, I can't say much about Kate's outfit. Meghan looked nice - given the photo of her dress in D.M.

I noticed that Lady Frederick is missing - hope she is making an excellent recovery.

When I was young, I loved looking at the genealogical charts in my nana's royal books. So much has changed! There have been divorces, deaths, and many additions. Some of those people listed in those early lists don't even get an invite to these lunches any more. But it's always a pleasure to see my youthful favourites, The Duchess of Kent, Princess Alexandra, especially, so beautiful in their youth and still so elegant - now with grandchildren and probably soon, great-grandchildren!

So many years of royal watching. What will come? My Christmas wish is that whilst change much come, it will happen gradually and traditions will remain. Now family is wanting me so Happy Christmas to all here and thanks to Charlotte for all her work this year.

    1. I myself was just wondering what the cutoff is to be considered “extended family” and if any branches have dropped off over time. And how does that go when a branch of the family no longer qualifies, awkward enough in “real” life to no longer be invited to annual traditions, can only imagine it being publicly noted!

    2. Yes, it will be interesting to see how some of the more distance relatives(the Queen's cousins and their kids) will be connected after the oldest generation passes on.

    3. Love the Duchess of Kent, what an elegant regal woman. I walked past her in London this year - I was doing one of the London walks, and a few of us were hanging about rather blocking the pavement, and she had to ask us to move out of the way. She was so polite about it!

At the moment, I was thinking of the Harewoods - the two sons of Princess Mary and thus cousins of the queen in the same way as the Gloucesters and Kents. There were scandals, divorces and several sons with multiple marriages and they seemed to drop out of the cousin line-up even though technically as close (and possessed of some fine jewels through their grandmother - although I believe all sold now - the sapphire tiara finally ended up in the V&A.

Although not scandalous, I suspect the next generation of the Kents and Gloucesters will drop away gradually. Today they are still around - one adorable grandson with a soft toy corgi - perhaps representing the sole surviving corgi of the queen.

I think she and William are thrilled that the spotlight is not solely focused on them and the children for a while. Princess Charlotte stole the show for me. 7. With those one shot snap photos it is so hard to judge what the expression really is. I agree it did look distressed but he may have been caught mid expression or just pinched a finger or startled by a very bright flash. I suspect at this point he is less distressed by the cameras and more annoyed if they are keeping him from getting someplace more quickly. At George and Charlotte's ages the child's focus is very much me and how quickly can we get to the next spot.

The kids were probably shy for a while, meeting so many adults they do not get to meet on a daily basis, but I'm sure they also had fun. And those sweets - yummy! :) How lovely it must be for HM and PP to get to see the (almost) whole extended family. They probably treasure these moments more and more with every year.
I'm double-excited today as I received a card from Buckingham Palace with thanks for the wishes on the occasion of HM+PP's 70th anniversary which I sent them in November! A lovely Christmas gift, I must say :) You can imagine how happy I was!

  30. This is a lovely occasion and one of my favourites in the year because we get to see the extended family. Everyone has had their say, but I must tip the hat to William at the Royal Variety Performance. Sadly Miranda Hart was not a very funny host, but watching William being a good sport was an absolute treat. Not all royals would have taken the ribbing. I think he endeared himself to everyone last night.

  31. Love that the Cambridges were color coordinated 💕 Charlotte has changed so much since we saw her the last time this summer. Really, she could be Eugenies daughter! It will be interesting see her growing through the years.

    William galloping...priceless :-)

  32. Looks like a fun day. The kids are adorable. I am sad we will not see them on Monday. I kind of wonder if that will change in the future. And it will be interesting to see if this annual luncheon will continue after the Queen is gone. Or if some of these traditions will shift and evolve.

  34. Prince William galloping had to be the high light of that evening😁. The Duchess of Cambridge looked glowingly lovely and happy enroute to the Queen’s luncheon. Thanks, Charlotte.

  36. I love this family. Kate looks beautiful as always. George had a haircut and looks so grown up, and Charlotte looks so much like him now. William is a lovely and proud dad. I like that they waved to the crowd when they left the palace gates. Cheers and prayers for a happy Christmas and a healthy baby for them.

    1. Yes, Charlotte does look just like George now. My two siblings and I look nothing alike and no one thinks we are related. So, yesterday, when I saw George and Charlotte sitting in the car, it was amazing to me how closely they now resemble each other. They are adorable.

  37. I love that they are color coordinated. I do that with my own small tribe at big events. Corny Mom privileges.

I know we can't see much of her outfit, but if it is that cape I'm just a little meh about that. I started following Kate because her style was so relatable, but that is increasingly not the case. Not a criticism, just an observation. Or maybe I just don't like capes..haha

    1. But why is the Zara cape not relatable? That's something most of us could actually buy.

  38. Like you Charlotte I love to watch the comings and goings of the royals!i love that cape that Kate wore by the way i doubt i could ever pull it off myself though. Must have been so nerve wracking for Meghan to meet all the extended members of the royal family all at once like that. She also looks stunning. I love Kate's gorgeous smile and hair and nice to see the kiddos. Princess Charlotte's hair seems to be turning blonde. Lovely family and I wish them a happy Christmas and to all of you on this blog and especially Charlotte.
