William's Last Day with the EAAA, Vote for Kate's Tour Jewellery and Shoes & 20% Off + A Giveaway from Azuni London!

Hello hello,

We have two more tour polls to share with you today, along with a treat for readers from Azuni London. Before we move on to all things fashion and sparkle related, Prince William completed his final shift with the East Anglian Air Ambulance last night, not only finishing his time with the EAAA after two years but bringing his flying career to an end as he prepares to begin a full-time schedule of duties this autumn.

Prince William thanked his colleagues and said he was "grateful" for the experience in the following statement:

'I wanted to say thank you to my colleagues, team mates and the people of East Anglia who I have been so proud to serve. Over the past two years I have met people from across the region who were in the most desperate of circumstances. As part of the team, I have been invited into people's homes to share moments of extreme emotion, from relief that we have given someone a fighting chance, to profound grief. I have watched as incredibly skilled doctors and paramedics have saved people's lives. These experiences have instilled in me a profound respect for the men and women who serve in our emergency services, which I hope to continue to champion even as I leave the profession. I am hugely grateful for having had this experience.'

Throughout his service, the Duke has been based out of Cambridge Airport, as part of a team including specialist doctors, critical care paramedics and pilots providing emergency medical services across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. EAAA helicopters can reach patients anywhere in the region within twenty-five minutes. They provide rapid, effective treatment as soon as possible after injury, and transport patients directly to hospital if required.  Regular landing areas for EAAA helicopters include residential gardens, carparks, beaches, roadsides, and any open space deemed possible by the captain. Last year, the EAAA carried out 2,361 missions.

The Telegraph reports:

'The Duke of Cambridge flew a critically-injured pedestrian to hospital on his final shift as an air ambulance pilot. The woman, in her 50s, had been reported missing when she was struck by a marked police van in Hethel, about eight miles south-west of Norwich. Officers were responding to a 999 call "relating to concerns for the safety" of the woman, Norfolk Police said.
Prince William's East Anglian Air Ambulance (EAAA) crew was called to the scene at 11.13pm on Thursday and the critical care team treated her at the scene for complex serious head injuries. The woman was then taken by air ambulance to Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, where she remains in a "life-threatening condition", the East of England Ambulance Service said.
A mile-long stretch of the B1135 Wymondham Road in Hethel, home of Lotus Cars, remained closed on Friday as the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigated. The rural road has farmers' fields on either side. The woman was struck at around 10.20pm on Thursday and nobody else was injured.'

No doubt it was a difficult day for William who has absolutely loved working as a pilot. 2017 is a year of significant changes, as Prince Philip prepares to carry out his last engagement next week, William soon begins dedicating himself full time to the Royal family. I'm sure the timing of both events is certainly no mere coincidence. It's going to be very interesting to see what the final quarter of the year brings.

I'm sure many would disagree with this, but I genuinely hope William buys a helicopter to fly in his private time or that he'd be allowed to fly the one they use whenever they travel by helicopter. Obviously it's something he truly enjoys, and it would be such a shame if he had to give it up completely at such a young age. He and Harry could share one! Haha! Honestly, why not? They inherited money from Diana's estate and could certainly afford that luxury. And they deserve the chance to do something they love after giving up their true passions in order to serve in their Royal roles. Yes, they live in luxury, but I personally think the cost is much higher than anyone realizes. I can't imagine a life where everyone scrutinizes every single move. No thanks!

    1. Jessica, I share your sentiments for William. I see that it is time for him to commence his full time royal duties, but I also feel sad that he cannot continue the profession of being a pilot. I think he deserves his own helicopter, if he doesn't have one already ;-)

      Delete
    2. Well, I’d agree with it too, Jessica. If King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands could secretly co-pilot commercial airliners about twice a month for 20 years (and now he’s said to be retraining to fly Boeing 737s!) I don’t see why William couldn’t fly a helicopter. Just as you mentioned above, the Dutch king said that this “hobby” lets him ‘relax,...leave his royal duties on the ground, and fully focus on something else.’ Maybe someone from the British “firm” will read your suggestion and take it seriously!

      Delete
    3. Jessica. I hope so too. I don't know that the boys would be allowed to fly the royal helicopter as the pilots might be specially trained in evasive maneuvers etc. and the boys roles while on board might be more designated to support security.
But I hope, with their wide range of friends and acquaintances that a helicopter would always be available to them. The Queen has her thoroughbred business, Phillip his carriage racing, so perhaps the boy's will get to maintain their flying. 🚁

      Delete
    4. Nice thought the William and Harry have their own helicopter, but it likely wouldn't happen for a number of reasons. I don't know the logistics, but to maintain a licence to fly, one probably has to log so many hours of flight time per year, plus keep up with training. The time commitment to do that is not likely possible, given that William is now dedicating himself to full time royal duties. I agree it is not easy being a royal.

      Delete
    5. You have some good points, Bonnie. They would have to stay current. That is time consuming.
Phillip had to give up his naval stuff that he reportedly loved so much but found carriage driving. Perhaps the boys will develop new hobbies too.

While I agree that being a royal requires sacrifice, let's not forget that being royal has allowed William to pursue his passions more easily than many. For one thing, his royal status allowed him to do a much faster RAF training than anyone else gets to do, and, his royal status is what allowed him to get the exact air ambulance job he wanted in the area of the country that was perfect for him because of the location of his country home. And even aside from those "perks", royals are not even close to the only ones who have to give up passions for the "family business." I know plenty of people who feel pressure to take over the family business, whether hotels or restaurants or car dealerships or whatever else, instead of pursuing perhaps their top passion. Yes, William has the added pressure of the monarchy also being the country's business and not just his family's, but still, in general the pressure to sacrifice your passion for something else is not at all unique to being royal. At least his sacrifice comes with a lot of perks - not everyone else's does.

Hey surfer girl! I wrote a long report about seeing Kate and William in Hamburg, but it seems it got lost somewhere in space, as it was never published :( I was able to catch a glimpse, indeed, as they were quickly walking from the Elbphilharmonie to the ferry. It was a hot day in Hamburg and I honestly didn't expect so much excitement from the German (and Polish) people. Some even got offensive and slightly aggressive while defending their place. As there was no official information where to wait to see them, we were first standing in a crowd on one side of the Elbphilharmonie before being told by a police officer that we wouldn't be able to see the Royals from there. As we finally got to the river banks, all "first and second row" places were already occupied, and I didn't ride about 600 kilometers to only see some people's backs and cameras, so I made my way through the crowd and got a "second raw" place. We were also told that officials would hand out British flags, which was not the case... Next time I will be better prepared and not rely on others. As you can read, I was slightly disappointed, but it was worth the journey overall ;)

      Delete
    3. Thanks, Natalia. :)

It didn't get lost. I read it and responded. :)
So very, very happy you and your mom got to make those memories. Glad the crowds didn't dampen your spirit or keep you from being willing to give it another go next time. :)
Would that all of us could meet up for some DKB fun in London when Harry marries. Wouldn't that be something? :)
He better not even think about eloping. :)

  7. I agree with you, Jessica. It is important for a person to do what he or she enjoys. In addition to his full time Royal duties, I also hope that the Duke of Cambridge has the time to fly a helicopter since he reportedly, enjoys it very much. Thanks again Charlotte, and you have a good weekend as well.

Being a real "lavender/lilac afficionada" (you should see my flat and my wardrobe and you would know what I´m talking about, haha ;-))) ), it was the Kiki McDonough lavender earrings - by far!! - they just make me WANT them every time I see them!! ;-))
Thanks for the polls, Charlotte, it´s always SUCH fun....

On a side note: Charlotte, have you heard anything lately about Harry and Meghan? I read that "Hello!" magazine Canada wrote she is in London at the moment as she will be celebrating her birthday soon. Can you somehow confirm that? I haven´t seen any news on your "madaboutmeghan" twitter account, so I was wondering.....

    1. Hello Eve,

It's been very quiet lately. They've managed to keep an incredibly low profile and appear to favour date nights in. Apparently they spent a lot of time at KP. It's no mean feat to stay under the radar given the interest. Hello! Canada and a couple of other outlets report Meghan is in London and it's possible her mother is too. I will have a look around to see what other reports are available.

Thanks, Charlotte! I heard the bookies are lowering the odds for an engagement which is always a good sign (well, at the end of 2007, apparently they were taking no more bets on Kate and William´s engagement, and we had to wait another three years, haha!!)... I agree with you, though, it´s really quite an "achievement" for the two of them to be together and NOT be spotted somewhere... Anyways, due to the fact that it´s Meghan´s 36th birthday next week and apparently they both want children, I guess they can´t postpone a decision about their future indefinitely, right? So there´s hope we don´t have to wait as long as we did with William and Kate, thank goodness!! (I remember only too well how I religiously "combed through the internet" every day for "new signs" during THAT summer and autumn before it was FINALLY announced!! ;-)))))

I'm very interested to see how much Kate increases her workload during this transition. Apparently palace aides have been careful to emphasize that the family will still spend significant periods of time at Anmer (something the original statement that William would be quitting his air ambulance job also seemed to indicate), and it seems like they have spoken much more about William increasing his duties than they have about Kate doing so. That combined with the fact that the Sunday Times had reported that William and Kate had considered having Kate and the kids still live in Norfolk w/ William commuting to Anmer on the weekends seems to indicate that it is a serious possibility Kate will not be increasing her workload by much. I'm not trying to complain in advance or anything - just curious how much this transition will affect Kate's workload as compared to William.

  19. I must admit I played safe by voting for the pumps as I was not keen on any of the sandals but it was hard to make a choice on the jewellery as so much of it was lovely. I eventually decided on the lovely amethyst earrings worn with the lavender dress.
I am glad Prince William has now finished with the Air Ambulance and I hope we will no longer get comments from him on his emotional state when arriving at s public engagement. I hadn't intended to make any comments on W & H documentary on their mother but in view of what is now happening in no small part I feel due to this documentary we are now getting all the various aspects of Diana's character both good and bad being revisited both in the papers and documentaries. I think it is a shame that after 20years her whole life is once again being dissected to the bone she was a flawed woman and clearly had mental problems but her charity work was outstanding and if W & K had done a documentary of just her charity work which is her legacy it would have been much better. I think it is wrong of William to be indoctrinating G \7 C at bedtime with stories about Diana and all the photos he has around the house of her it is undermining Kate who is clearly a very loving mother in fact with all that is going on in the press and TV I feel very sorry for both the Queen and Kate. I am getting the impression that Diana means more to William than his wife I thought that when he gave Kate his mother's ring an action which brought very varied reactions from the press and the public at the time.
Referring to tomorrow's & Monday's engagements I see that both are being covered live on BBC 2 tomorrow evening and BBC1 on Monday morning

Wait, what? How is talking about the kids dead grandmother and telling stories about her since they wont know her undermining his wife?! I think that is a very standard way of introducing a deceased loved one to kids.

      Delete
    2. Huh? I don't understand this at all. William talks to his kids about Diana because she's not there anymore to play with her grandkids. How is that undermining Kate? Kate is their mother, and if Diana were around they'd no doubt both be important influences in George and Charlotte's lives. As it stands William has to keep Diana's memory alive for the kids.

      Delete
    3. What a bizarre perspective ! Are you seriously suggesting that one shouldn't talk about their dead parents to their children ? And I hope that Kate is more secure than you seem to be. Honoring one's mother is not dishonoring one's wife. What a strange way to think.

    4. Julia from Leominster30 July 2017 at 21:08

I grew up hearing stories about my Dad's mum who died young -(and my dad was no talker about things.) It seemed very natural to me and was so obviously that my dad loved her dearly, and was heartbroken at his loss - but also that this was no threat to the passionate and wonderful love affair he had with my mum. My mum's dad was also gone before I was born and I heard constant stories about her life with her parents, the pets, the adventures and all - it was the history behind my life.

So I don't see anything remotely odd in William wanting to talk to the children about Diana - and he has the worry none of us have - that they will be faced with all sorts of rubbish and every scandalous little detail being out there in the public as they grow older - so of course he wants them to see and understand her as her saw and loved her. Frankly, I find it deeply touching - so much nicer than families where they have nothing good to say about a lost member - that happens too often - so how much better when it is the other way around.

      Delete
    5. I agree, Julia. As someone who grew up with a mom who moved around a lot, I was astonished to find out that my father's family had lots of "roots" going back to the American revolution and then before that to England. Learning that promoted me to also find out about my mom's family history. It gave me s sense of certain stability, continuity that hadn't been present before. Now, I share those histories with my son.
(and, amazingly enough, he listens, lol.)

  21. I feel so bad for William having to quit flying. I know people think he deserves no sympathy because of being royalty, but honestly in today's world I think that's more of a burden than a blessing. And the fact that he apparently found his passion but has to give it up is, in my opinion, very sad.

On a happier note... Kate's jewelry! I wavered between a sentimental choice (Diana's bracelet) or some of the beautiful gems. In the end, I voted for gems.

  22. The ruby earrings and necklace don't match. The earrings have the stone set in yellow gold and the necklace has the stone set in white prongs and the style of each is markedly different. I don't think they are a good match and the colour of each seems different too. I didn't think there was anything standout in her tour wardrobe, but I thought the lavender dress for the last day was very pretty.

    1. My Grandmother's Apron, the ruby earrings look reset to me and seem to go with the ruby ring. Given the length to which the BRF went to honour the family links to the Spanish Royal Family *, I wouldn't be astonished one bit if sooner or later the ruby jewelry Catherine wore arriving in Warsaw, or part of it, will turn out to be (reset?) vintage Battenberg pieces honouring Prince Philip's Polish-German heritage.

In this period of transition (William quitting EAAA, Prince Philip's final official engagement before retirement on August 2, even Brexit), it amuses me to think that Catherine choosing to wear a middle part 6(7) times out of 9(10) on this tour might - apart :-) from other reasons - be a subtle tribute to Prince Philip's Polish-German ancestor Julia (von) Hauke, Princess of Battenberg.

  27. I too am sad that William has given up the air ambulance. I think being part of a team such as this is will be invaluable to him when he becomes King. Also it gives him a purpose as he is helping others. And I also thinking being in his position could be very lonely.

In response to Lizzie K, my mother died when my son was a toddler. I too have many pictures of her around the house and tell him stories at bedtime about his grandmother. I don't see how teaching his children about his mother is hurting Kate. Luckily Kate is a mature, secure woman and isn't competing with William's dead mother. Guess he picked wisely.

    Hope USA.

I registered and I like the Athena bracelet in lapis. Or the earrings in lapis. Love lapis.

Now that I've done that, what the heck is going on with the royal's staff???

I know right! I hope it's just Daily Mail making something big out of a happenstance surge in people changing jobs (which is bound to happen) rather than something being fishy.

I think Balmoral time is a natural clear space for change to happen and for new staff to become adjusted to new jobs at a quiet time, so I wouldn't make too much of it - over the years there has been countless changes in staff for the queen and we don't know how much of a shake-up for William and Kate yet.

I have always been a believer in unity in royal households but never underestimate the difficulty in achieving that goal - tensions and personalities come into play both amongst the royals and amongst the hierarchy of the staff. But now Philip is retiring, I hope to see William and Kate do more with the queen - and expect to see Charles take on more duties of state (although I don't believe a regency is necessary) so more coordination is going to be necessary.

As for helicopters, William's had his time - he will of course have use of the royal flight but those aren't for personal use - especially now where everything is watched closely and cost is counted. Most of us take on work that might not be our first choice - that's how life is. (Was shocked to hear about the Dutch king flying - I know pilots and know many of them have second occupations for their off time - but flying is their first concern. Somehow for the king, this seems backwards here and I'm never a believer that it is easy to do two vital things well with full attention - and being a commercial pilot and being a king are two vital things.

  31. I don't know either bluhare. But I do know that in the midst of it all that The Queen is remaining calm and carrying on as usual as stated in the Daily Mail article today. (Surprise? NOT. Not her first rodeo. :)

  34. My favorite Azuni piece remains the "Kate" or Athena earrings, but the runner up would be the "Nova" crochet mandala earrings.

  35. Thanks for all you do. I love your dedication and energy to this site. I ordered some lovely jewelry and used the discount code, thank you! I'm especially looking forward to the Damara gemstone coin earrings in silver with Iolite which I matched up with the Iona gemstone Iolite studs for my recently double pierced ears!

  36. I'm a bit bored by the Gianvito Rossi Praline Pumps, but understand why they remain so popular. I would have preferred for Kate to bring back the LK Bennet Sledge for some of her tour looks that called for a neutral shoe or even debut a neutral new shoe - I'm just not a fan of suede in the summer. My favorite shoes from the tour were far and away the Gianvito Rossi Ankle Strap Suede d'Orsay Pumps.

The jewelry was a harder choice because of the variety. While I am so happy that Kate debuted Diana's pearl bracelet (I sincerely hope we begin to see more and more of Diana's jewelry in future) and I adored the Kiki McDonough Lavender Amethyst Pear and Oval Drop Earrings with the lavender dress, in the end I decided to vote for the Simone Rocha Crystal Beaded Drop Earrings. Although I didn't care for the red Alexander McQueen, I love, love, loved these earrings. I think they are modern, youthful, and fresh and very much hope to see them again with a different look - maybe on a visit to the designer's native Ireland...

  44. Hi Charlotte!
I loved the Stuart Weitzman sandals as they were a change from the closed toe shoes the Duchess normally wears! I was also elated to see nail varnish on her toes! She seems to be embracing her own style while maintaining palace regulations. I adore the Azuni Demeter necklace in gold! Thanks Charlotte for a great post!

  50. It dawned on me while reading the part on William leaving EAAA that every time that he went out on a call it had to be without his security detail. The number of dangerous situations he would have been in without protection seems crazy to me. It just screams at me how important this was to him and how hard he must have had to fight to be allowed to do it. I have total respect for the man and I think Diana would be so proud of the men that he and Harry have become.

I hadn't thought of that before. He does seem to be forging some impressive new paths. If William can stay faithful to Kate/the children, he will be an awesome king in my opinion and, in part, for just the reasons you mentioned.

  53. -From the first day Kate wear the Gianvito Rossi Praline Pumps, I have liked them and have not been tired of them yet.
    - The Gianvito Rossi Ankle Strap Suede d'Orsay Pumps are lively and distinctly beautiful.
-The way Kate coordinated her accessories with the German designer's dress, and the Prada Quazo Sandals makes them even more of a hit.

I ended up voting for my first love, the blush/rose pumps.

Personal taste inclined to precious stones, voted for the ruby.

  57. This is so fun! I don't think I made it in time for the giveaway, but I'd love to have something from Azuni someday-maybe as a 30th birthday present? Hmm...

I'm pleased as punch that I went with the majority on the Prada sandals. Not sure if this is accurate but they seem like one of her tallest pairs! In terms of jewelry, it's hard not to be dazzled by anything Kiki, but the mystique of the ruby and diamond pendant and earrings (do we know they're source yet?) plus featuring it on the first day of the tour merited my vote.
