Tour Poll Results, Calendar Updates for Kate & A New Romance for Prince Harry!

Good afternoon, everyone! We're back with something of a 'mixed bag' of updates today, beginning with the results of our post tour polls. As always, it was fascinating to see your favourite pieces worn by the Duchess during the Canada trip and to hear your thoughts on the variety of designers and styles showcased.

Best Tour Dress

In terms of looks from the tour that will be remembered and discussed, I think one can safely say two of Kate's dresses in Canada very much fall into that category. The first - and the winner of the 'Best Tour Dress' award - is the Preen by Thornton Bregazzi Finella Satin Midi Dress the Duchess wore for a Government House reception. The dress garnered 2,819 votes. It's not at all surprising to see it won; it's a beautiful 1950s-inspired dress, and red is a great colour for the Duchess.

Coming in at a very close second (just 100 votes behind) we have the stunning bespoke blue fitted dress by Jenny Packham Kate wore for her arrival on the first day of the tour. The whole look was incredibly sophisticated, and it's a classic example of accessorizing, from Kate's hat to her Maple Leaf Brooch adding a fabulous polish and complementing a beautiful dress.

Best Tour Coat

There was certainly no question of close competition in our 'Best Tour Coat' category. The cream Catherine Walker coat was a runaway winner receiving 4,396 of the 6,309 votes cast. I imagine an appreciation for the quality, tailoring and all round classic design of the coat caught many people's eyes.

Best Casual/Daywear Ensemble

Due to the nature of the itinerary we saw Kate in several casual ensembles suitable for outdoors engagements. Once again, we have a clear front runner: the Sentaler Wrap Coat with Ribbed Sleeves teamed with a simple black top and jeans.

Best Footwear

It was fun to see Kate experimenting with a couple of new footwear styles during the tour. When it came to voting, readers favoured this change choosing the J Crew Avery Heels in Tweed as the winner. The Italian-made, pointed-toe style features textured tweed fabric, tassel details and a stacked heel for maximum wearability and comfort.

Best Tour Earrings

Earlier in the post we discussed how well Kate's Jenny Packham dress was styled with accessories that worked incredibly well with the dress. The G. Collins & Sons Tanzanite Teardrop Earrings added the perfect touch of sparkle to the look and are the winner of our 'Best Tour Earrings' poll.

Least Favourite Pieces

In the least popular category, we have the See by Chloé dress Kate wore for the children's playdate. I'm in the minority, because I very much like the dress, although it would have worked better in another setting. In the coat category, it's the Hobbs London Persephone Trench, most likely because it was a repeat. For casual daywear it's the Really Wild Cashmere Mix Sweater, Troy London Parka and Zara pants. For footwear, it's the L.K. Bennett Floret Pumps, and in the earrings category we have the Kiki Lauren earrings.

Thank you all so much for voting; it was so interesting to see your choices. Did your favourites win?

Next, we move to calendar updates. As you've likely heard, tomorrow Kate will attend the premiere of A Street Cat Named Bob at the Curzon Mayfair Cinema. The film, which stars Luke Treadaway, is based on the much-loved, international best-selling book. Starring Luke Treadaway as James Bowen and with Bob as Bob. A Street Cat Named Bob tells the moving and life-affirming true story of the unlikely friendship between a young homeless busker, James Bowen, and the stray ginger cat that changed his life. The Duchess will meet the real life James and Bob, as well as the rest of the film’s cast and representatives. The premiere will benefit Kate's patronage Action on Addiction. As it's a film premiere, we can expect to see Kate in an evening dress - perhaps the midi length she's been favouring recently.

Kensington Palace just announced the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will join other members of the Royal family for the annual Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday, 12 November. The Royal British Legion's annual televised festival commemorates those who have lost their lives in service of their country. It takes place on the eve of Remembrance Sunday, with two performances on the day - a matinée open to members of the public and an evening event for members of the Legion, their families, officials and royals.

Last year marked the first time William and Kate attended the event. The Duchess wore a black lace Dolce & Gabbana dress.

Sunday, 13 November is Remembrance Sunday. As always, we'll see the Duchess at the Cenotaph in Whitehall for ceremonies that morning.

Next, we move to 'off-topic' chat discussing the royal story dominating headlines in recent days - news Prince Harry is dating Suits actress Meghan Markle. The exclusive story was broke by Sunday Express journalist Camilla Tominey who has an excellent track record (and clearly excellent sources). Initially many were skeptical as to the validity of the story, but it now seems the two have definitely been seeing each other for several months with a number of reporters receiving confirmation from various sources.

'"He’s happier than he’s been for many years,” said a source close to the Prince last night. “He’s in a very relaxed period of his life and Meghan has come along at the right time. "They are taking each week as it comes and just enjoying each other’s company but it’s fair to say that they love seeing each other and there’s a definite chemistry between them.
"Harry has been desperate to keep the relationship quiet because he doesn’t want to scare Meghan off. He knows things will change when their romance is public knowledge but he also knows he can’t keep it a secret for long.'

The avalanche of stories in the media speculating on when they met (now thought to be over the summer in London) to how serious the relationship is has been immense with dozens of outlets churning out several stories per day. The coverage is somewhat reminiscent to the hype we saw during William and Kate's dating years and is a reminder of just how difficult it is for royals manage their private lives. Harry recently discussed this saying: "If or when I do find a girlfriend, I will do my utmost to ensure we get to the point where we are actually comfortable with each other before the massive invasion into her privacy." It would seem the Prince has achieved his goal in keeping the news private for a considerable time before the world found out. Below, a photo Meghan posted on instagram, wearing a bracelet remarkably similar to one Harry received in Africa.

Who is Meghan Markle? Emily Andrews shared this bio:

'But Harry likes an independent girl and the LA-born actress is undoubtedly her own person who is clearly not afraid of the limelight. Meghan, who is nicknamed “Flower” by her African-American mum, Doria, grew up on TV sets, with her dad Tom Markle working as a lighting director on hit Eighties and Nineties US sitcom Married . . . With Children.
After going to private school, she graduated from Northwestern University in Illinois, where she studied theatre and international relations, and spent years as a struggling actress — including a bit-part in CSI: NY in 2006 — before becoming a household name in Suits in 2011.
Besides starring as Rachel Zane in the legal drama, Meghan — who lives in Toronto, Canada — is a successful businesswoman, running her own food, fashion and travel website The Tig. She was recently appointed an Advocate for Women by the United Nations, joining fellow actresses and ambassadors Angelina Jolie and Emma Watson. She also visited Rwanda to work on a clean water project and has travelled to Afghanistan to support US armed forces.
Our source added: “Harry loves her humanitarian work in Africa and the fact she’s an independent, sassy girl, while she’s part of a power clique in Toronto that includes the prime minister and major TV stars so she’s not intimidated by celebrity.”'

Meanwhile People's Simon Perry reports the actress has already met Prince Charles:

'Prince Harry is so serious with actress Meghan Markle that an engagement could be in the not-so-distant future, insiders suggest. That is certainly a possibility,” one friend tells PEOPLE in this week’s issue. “It is certainly one possible outcome. It’s pretty serious, so we will see.”
The prince, 32, and the Suits star, 35, have been dating seriously for about two months, another source confirms. Things are moving so quickly, in fact, that Harry has already introduced Markle to his father (and the future king of England), Prince Charles, PEOPLE has learned. “Harry is pretty serious about her and she is pretty serious about him,” says the pal. Adds a close friend: “It’s great. They have a lot in common and I’m sure they will get on very well.'

The two clearly have shared interests in terms of humanitarian work and travel. As an actress and an avid social media user it's been suggested Meghan will handle the media interest quite well. It's undoubtedly going to be a very overwhelming time for them both with photographers desperate to snap the first photo of them together and people coming out of the woodwork selling stories.

Are you surprised by the news? What are your thoughts on the scale of media coverage? It's an interesting topic, which I look forward to hearing your thoughts on.

  1. Thanks for giving us the verdict on your polls. It is fun to see how my choices compared to those of the others.
As on the subject of Harry's possible girlfriend: if you are dating someone in the public eye, then I think you/she should show more discretion. I feel you should simply not tweet on the matter or tease your audience with your tweets. If she continuous with that then she could land Harry in awkward situations. It's just not done, I'd say.

    1. 17:25,

I agree. Her social media ventures pertaining to she and Harry should stop immediately IMO.
shades of Kardashianism. NO, NO, NO
Harry deserves SO much better than that. Harry matters most, way before and above her tweet followers, if he is her date, mate, sweetheart. She will have to decide. Have to make that distinction.
Harry deserves only the very best in my opinion.
And discretion is a factor in that.

  2. Great post and I was glad to see my favorite pieces of the Duchess' win. :) I am thrilled that Prince Harry has found someone, but the most disturbing piece I read today is how the media are pointing out Meghan Markle's nationality/heritage. I, for one, do not care what her color is--- everyone should be more concerned about their healthy and happiness. It seems this relationship is early still.... don't jump the gun on an upcoming marriage proposal and what it would mean to the royal bloodlines. I truly hope this relationship works for the both of them! They are a gorgeous couple!!Great job with the post Charlotte!

  3. Thanks for a new post!! I can't remember what dress I voted for, but I know everything else I voted for did not get 1st place. We all love different things on how Kate dresses.

I can't wait for the Premiere tomorrow, fingers crossed Kate wears a new dress. OR something out of the norm for her!

Its funny, Emily Andrews is now saying that Meghan is a shallow social climber who hasn't helped her family with money . Its funny, she was the 1st one I saw share things on Twitter of his new girlfriend, and the 1st one to knock her down. I have not heard of her. I hardly watch TV though, and the channels I have are very basic... If Harry is happy in love, then I'm happy for him! All I care is how is it going to effect the Royal Trio, If Kate likes her then so will I ;)

    1. In fairness, Emily Andrews did not say those things, she wrote an article quoting Meghan's half-sister, she was the one who allegedly said those things. Of course, she is now denying she ever said them or gave interviews. I wouldn't give much credence to her comments.

Also worth remembering that the reporters job is to interview the sources and write the story, the *editors* dictacte the headlines and how the story will "play".

    2. Thank God, Harry can filter all this through William and Kate. Obviously he values their input. I personally don't have a good feeling feeling about Harry's new romance for some reason. You know how guys can see through other guys and give good opinions. So also with girls knowing about other girls. Hopefully, Kate is on top of this one. She will know immediately about Meghan, one way or the other. Thankfully, I think Kate is close enough to Harry that he will listen to her. I don't know that they want the Hollywood type in their inner circles. Doesn't make for the most secure environments all the way around. Don't think she would be willing to give that up. Just a guess. She has already been way more indiscreet than Kate and the Middletons who were not indiscreet at all, even during the years and years of intense scrutiny and media circus.
I just hope Harry doesn't get hurt.

    3. I remember now what dress I voted for, the Red and White McQueen. It is different and I like the high collar and whatnot.

      Delete
    4. I think W&K are a great example of a successful courtship and marriage in the Firm. Hopefully, Harry will be equally fortunate. But I think it's key for this young lady, or any other girlfriend, to understand the importance of being discreet. Harry must be able to trust her as well as the rest of the RF. Without trust, it will be a bumpy ride.

      Delete
    5. I hope Harry doesn't get hurt also. She was with her ex-husband for years before they married. Don't know if she dated him exclusively all those years or not. She was dating a chef for two years after the divorce. Doesn't seem like she dates around much so that's good. She has two rescue dogs so that's good. She has a popular blog called The Tig. She's a foodie and likes fashion and decor. Those are components of her blog.
So that's good. (She's not a drab militant feminist.) She became socially interactive with Hilary Clinton when she was 11, and is a friend of hers now. She is friends with a lot of haute couture designers and others at fashion week.
So that's a bonus. I hope Harry can easily hold his own in their relationship. She seems like a very strong personality, very independent.

      Delete
    6. Someone said she was dating the chef when she met Harry? Or had she broken up with the chef prior to meeting Harry?

      Delete
    7. I hope William and Kate would be willing to give Harry their honest opinions about Meghan and that Harry would listen but I am not so sure about all of that.

      Delete
    8. First, I have very good feelings about this young lady. I like that she is a Northwestern grad (yay!!), has her own blog, charities, seems to be invested in her work, spoke at the UN, is a self-declared feminist (thank goodness) - both career and charitable work, beautiful, worked at the US Embassy in Argentina before starting to act, speaks fluent Spanish. If you sum up her activities and accomplishments she has already outperformed W,K &H.
At the same time, having a blog and being active on social media may mean that she does not have the acute sense of boundaries that being in the royal family requires. Her twitter posts - with the bananas and the statements - they seemed to be deliberately done to excite and tease the public. She is launching a new fashion line or something , so i am sure that the publicity does not hurt. But it made me go Ugh ! Some things are precious and not for public consumption. It would seem that she does not feel the same way.
I am also mystified by the timing of this revelation. Why reveal at all ? No one spotted them. No one guessed anything. No one speculated anything. The media was largely leaving him alone. Why do this big rollout of a girlfriend, completely unprovoked ? And then unleash a big media storm? I don't see any rhyme or reason for this. Unless there is a particular reason that the announcement HAD to be made right now. Simply had to be made. OR it is all a hoax. OR MM had a fling with Harry, it's over now and she is taking advantage of the situation by capitalizing on the publicity.
Whatever it is, the reasons will become clear with time.

      Delete
    9. 18:14, I LOVE the way you put that.

"But some things are precious and not for public consumption." How sweet and how true. And that is what I want for Harry. And, she DOESN'T seem to feel that way. She doesn't have the "boundaries" things worked out at all. OR, sadly, maybe she does. Whatever her motives, those tweets were tacky.

      Delete
    10. Apparently she was dating the chef when she met Harry.

      Delete
    11. They said that Harry is following her tweets under a pseudonym. Even so, they should find a better, more private way, to romance each other. They say she has been given access to Harry's social media. That would be a better, but not optimal way. Could be just stuff the media has made up also.

      Delete
    12. Yes! On the one hand there is someone who holds the media always at longer than arms length; one could even say hates the media. On the other is someone who is very much involved in self promotion. Yes, sure, she is involved with charity work and that's fantastic but she is also an actress who has released a fashion line and has a fashion blog, all of which she wants to promote.

I agree with you, anon1814, timing is unusual.
Wouldn't you, in his situation, be as silent as the grave if news of your relationship broke!? I would do anything to protect it, if I was truly in/ falling in love with that person. Posting baiting tweets and pictures is, as many of you have said, tacky and self involved.
      Basically, my heckles are raised.

      Delete
  4. So looking forward to the premiere tomorrow.

I like Meghan Markle as an actress and a celebrity but I agree with Anon 17:25 that you cannot be both royalty and celebrity. She will need to give up her career, her country, her religion, celebrity friends and many others. I think Harry could find someone more compatible to build his life with.

    1. Personally I don't think that will be AS necessary for Harry's wife. As George and Charlotte grow (and any future Cambridge children) Harry will move to the sidelines, it's the cruel part of royal, hereditary life. And in these times with the monarchy shrinking daily, I think the only future focus will be on the monarch and his/her heir.

Plus - Ms. Markle seems to be most interested in her charitable work, and seems to have indicated that her main satisfaction with her job is that it allows her to have such a humanitarian impact. I think continuing her charitable work is the only job she truly cares about, good thing for a royal:)

    3. Princess Grace gave up her Hollywood lifestyle (Grace Kelly) to marry into the Monaco royal family so it has happened before. Grace Kelly was quite famous when she decided to step away.

I think it is too early to predict for Meghan and Harry if they are truly dating.

      Delete
    4. Today's royals ARE celebrities in a way that they have not been before the age of the Internet. Nowadays they must be firmly and comfortably and REGALLY grounded in both camps.

Already being a celebrity is an advantage for Meghan. She knows how to handle cameras, public scrutiny and so forth. Like Catherine (and others marrying into Europe's royal houses from all sorts of backgrounds), she can be taught protocol and how to handle herself in a more royal way.

She also knows how fickle the press is, how much "rubbish" (as Harry calls it) finds its way into tabloid print. If Harry is a man she wants and if she is smart, she will hold her head high and rise above it all. The Middletons have had to put up with a lot of bashing in the media, too. However, they've done it with grace and aplomb.

For the most part the Middleton family has been discrete. Even the odd uncle, business ventures deemed to have traded on the royal connections, wayward skirts as well as Pippa and pistols haven't stuck. Whether Meghan's family and friends can be counted on to do the same remains to be seen.

To make a royal marriage others have also given up much. Therefore, if the relationship comes to marriage, some choices will have to be made. Any marriage involves that kind of give and take between the partners in it. However, so far all of Harry's love interests have said, "No thanks."

I am most wary of Philip who could have a very negative impact on the relationship. He's a man of a different era. He's shut others out before and is still old-school on issues of royal duty. Based on his record, I believe race could be a sticking point with him as well. However, if the RF goes that route, they're finished. The republicans will see to that.

      Delete
    5. Philly I would disagree on the DofE, first and foremost he is almost always charmed by a beautiful woman! Second, MM may have already proved that she is well capable for "duty" and the Duke respects hard workers. And he's incredibly close to both William and Harry, he will want Harry to be happy and I think he will recognize what Harry and MM have in common. If it's true she met Charles I'm sure they hit it off quite nicely, she's also a big proponent of farm-to-table fresh, organic foods, right up Charles' alley!

I agree that she has many strong traits, she wrote recently "I never wanted to be a lady who lunches, I want to be a woman who works!" She could so easily be a party girl, but she's passionate about charitable issues and promoting them, big pluses for life as a royal wife. Not to mention she's gorgeous, adores fashion, and is at ease and comfortable in front of the camera - that will make her a smash hit with the press.

Yes, like everyone else, there may be a tawdry story here or there about family etc, but that won't have the same affect on someone who has so much depth to begin with, in my opinion. She's quite accomplished in a variety of ways. Her speech at the UN was quite poised and impressive.

Of course we're all probably getting way ahead of ourselves! But it's easy and fun to speculate from my armchair :)

Poor Harry and Meghan. It should be possible for the public to show restraint, but it isn't likely, given conditions today. And maybe she doesn't want restraint at this point. I wish them well.

I'm with you, Charlotte, on the Chloe dress, but I did like the red Thornton Bregazzi dress best. I also voted for the least-liked casual wear. Call me unfashionable. (Or independent.)

It will be interesting to see what Catherine chooses for this year's Remembrance Day events. I'm with you, expecting a tea-length dress for the premiere. If it's floor-length, I'll be happy!

  6. I have been predicting for some time now that Harry would end up with someone who is involved in the same humanitarian and charitable work as he is. I could not see him marrying some vapid, to-the-manor born society girl. However, I could also see him with someone who also leads a somewhat glamorous life....since we know Harry enjoys a good party from time to time, I predicted he would not pair up with a home-body. I think Meghan fits the bill!

    1. Pam,

Meghan, a home body? She may be a "foodie" but home body doesn't seem to fit in with her history of political activism and professional endeavors. I would love for Harry to find a home body type of girl though.

    3. Oh. Sorry, Pam. lol. I misunderstood your text.

I do hope he marries an amazing woman, but a homebody though. One like Kate who will travel and do humanitarian things with him, but be, at heart, a home body.

      Delete
    4. That's okay! I hope that Harry marries someone like that as well....it seems he wants children, perhaps many of them, so the person he marries needs to be willing to settle down, become part of a team that focuses on the humanitarian work and raising the family. Perhaps if these two are the real deal, and she loves him for himself and not for his title, perhaps Meghan can become that person. I hope Harry is astute enough to decide for himself whether or not she can rise to the occasion. (However, I'm not hopeful!. She seems to be someone who loves the limelight, and the fact that she's dating a prince, more than anything. Yes, I know, I have nothing to base that on, not knowing her personally of course, but it's just a feeling I get. Just can't picture her "Princess Meghan" someday). (Also worry that she's too old to be able to crank out a few kids at this point )

Until Pippa got engaged, I still held out hope that she and Harry would end up together! As for Harry and his rumoured GF its hardly worth discussing as for now its a private matter and there is no evidence to support anything which is being reported. Its all just celebrity gossip. If and when he gets engaged will I get interested. But I must confess to having a slight curiosity. Would she have to become a British citizen to marry into the BRF? Would Britons get behind someone with no prior connection to UK?

    1. She attended private Catholic school for years. She might be Catholic. That, for the fifth in succession to the throne might be problematic, given their status in the Church of England. She has done some steamy stuff on screen. She is 35. So as Moxie mentioned, if they would want children, that is a consideration. She seems very independent. That might be a consideration. If Harry is serious about her I hope he has a long courtship to make sure he really knows her and how they truly get along. Part of that needs to be played out with the media around to get true perspectives on the how they get along in the midst of all that. There are a lot of things to consider.

I read that she is Jewish, but she still attended a Catholic private school (I also went to a Catholic school and there were also girls who were not Catholic). From Judaism to Anglicanism might be more difficult than from Catholicism to Anglicanism, I think. Autumn kelly was Catholic but had to convert. Philip was Greek orthodox and had to convert. But those were all types of Christianity so it will probably be more difficult from the jewish faith.

      Delete
    5. Sonja,

That conversion would be a giant leap. Unless she has a revelation that Yeshua is Messiah the change would only be a superficial one anyway.
Even a change over just for political reasons would be so huge. Where did you read that she is Jewish?

Im really happy to hear about Harry dating Megan Markle. I dont usually pay too much of attention to dating rumors but it is a welcome relief from seeing all those stories about Beatrice and Eugenie wanting to be full-time working royals. I definitely dont see the sudden need for them to undertake more royal engagements.

Same with me. My first idea was: after the blonds, maybe it's not a coincidence that Meghan looks quite different and resembles his sister-in-law. Of course this is a totally superficial view; what really matters is that they seem to have a lot in common, especially serious interest in charity work. It's true that HM only became Queen because her uncle refused to give up an American divorcee but that was 80 years ago and Harry is not the first in line. I sincerely wish him well, I'm just a bit afraid that at 35 or 36 it's not so easy to start a family but on the other hand, there are more women nowadays who become mothers at that age than ever before. (And it's too early for such concerns, anyway!)

  13. I have a hard time imagining Harry marrying an American actress. Of course, with Brexit, there's nothing wrong with strengthening your ties to the USA. Reminds me of when all the duchesses were of American descent in order to bring in more money/allies. Her age is interesting... I think if he wants children (with her) things will have to move fast.

  14. I doubt that. Charles divorced. Anne divorced. Andrew divorced. There may be other factors that will play into whether or not she is a safe addition to the monarchy.
celebrity, being an actress, some less than traditional political stances, tweeting when she shouldn't be tweeting, etc. Harry is fifth in succession to the throne. These things matter.

  15. Thanks, Charlotte, for the polls and the fun results. It must be a lot of work. As is the case with so much you do, it is very much appreciated.

There have been various reports here in Toronto that Prince Harry was spotted in Meghan Markle's downtown Toronto neighbourhood on Hallowe'en Night, handing out candy!

I was so surprised at the rumours. I really don't know her acting work but she is the celebrity spokeswoman for Reitman's, which is a Canadian women's clothing company. It's not upscale, probably lesser in price range than Topshop in England. Meghan has recently done a cute commercial for Reitman's line of jeans where it's easy to see that she is very pretty and very lively.

I wish Prince Harry a lot of happiness and Meghan too. I don't think it's realistic to speak yet of her giving up her career/celebrity until the "relationship"is very solid (if there really is one-Canadian sources are somewhat skeptical; although it has been on the front page of our papers).

Maybe this might lead to a different kind of royal life for Harry. If Charles is scaling back on royal involvements for family members, Harry may become more of a "celebrity" himself with a more non-royal lifestyle. He could still be a charity powerhouse but his personal life could be more private and unconventional. The kind of totally uncontroversial life partner for royal men really is getting more impossible to find, especially if this woman is in her late twenties or thirties. There are going to be careers, back stories, family complications, prior partners-all those things.

As if it weren't hard enough for Harry...I hope they have a chance.

As for Miss Markle, Im not sure about her. There is something I just don't like about her - its not who she is, where she comes from, what she does or her biological history, etc. My area of concern is that she has been hinting at her romance through instagram showing there is no discretion. That screams to publicity hungry to me and its a bit tacky. Anyone can dream of being a princess but being one isn't quite as easy and simple as it sounds. Even that doesn't really pin point it for me. Im just not too sure about her for some reason.

I kind of doubt they will last long. Like others here, I just don't trust her whole persona. She is already seeking attention. Tacky. She must really think it is her parade.

The only issue with the log courtship thing is her age. Or that 35(6)? Is old but if they have an 8 year long relationship like Kate and William she would be 44 before they married and started thinking about babies which might be too late

William and Kate were lucky. They met at university when the press had agreed to leave William alone so their relationship was kept a secret for almost two years before the news broke they were dating. Harry isn't that lucky because he won't ever have that private time away from the public eye. I'm amazed it took as long as it did to break this news

  26. I am following this wonderful blog for such a long time, but now write my first comment on Harry's love life ;)

As much as I like Meghan in Suits, I really would have wished for a Non-Show Biz Person to win Harry's heart. He dated and flirted almost exclusively with Models, TV Presenters, Singers and Actresses. The only exception being the wonderful Chelsy Davy.
Yes, I get it: long legs and a model figure are very important to Harry, but there are beautiful women out there who have "normal" Jobs.
And didn't he have a fling with Ellie Goulding in June, when he already knew Meghan?

Sorry, I guess I am old fashioned and a little disappointed in his choice of women. It is just another sign for young women, that it is better to look good and be a star and have a flashy Instagram Account than be a doctor, nurse or teacher.

    2. @ Anon 3:33 You may have loved Catherine from the start but remember that many did not. There was much that was grossly unkind said about her and every member of her family. Over time that died down a bit, but there still are haters and mean posters on almost every online platform and story about Catherine.

Frankly, I was impressed after reading Meghan's blog posts and checking out her images on Google. She speaks well, writes from the heart, understands and uses her privileged position to do good for others. Not a lot wrong with any of that. Frankly, it might not be easy for Harry to do better--given both his position and his past.

Racy? Not so much. Any racy elements are more often than not from a ROLE Meghan is playing as an actress. Sexy, definitely. However, there's nothing wrong with being a sexual woman. When William first took note of Catherine it was because she looked "hot" in her see-through dress. And look how that ended.

Also, in this day and age, why would we be prejudiced against a woman in show business? It's as venerable a career as any other. Or an American? That's the same sort of snobbery that Catherine her mother and her sister (especially) had to endure.

I say leave them both alone to work it out for themselves. But I realize that there's little chance of that now that the tabloid feeding frenzy has started.

    3. But Kate wasn't a doctor, nurse, or teacher either - in fact she wasn't anything other than "part time assistant buyer" for a brief time (and then whatever her family claimed she did for the family business). By your logic, was Kate teaching young women to have minimal career ambitions while waiting for a rich man to propose?

I think that there are so many paths women can take nowadays, from staying at home to working in the careers you mentioned to being actresses/models, it's impossible to come up with a "one size fits all" appropriate background for a woman who marries in to the royal family!

      Delete
    4. 18:51

Yes, but Kate was with William in college and after and worked for her parents because with the media circus camping on her doorstep every day, holding down a "real" job would have been almost impossible. The media would have followed her to and from work, as they did when she worked as an accessories buyer. They would have interviewed fellow employees, followed her to and from lunch, etc. She said herself, that her plans, before William entered her life, were to find a teaching job and preferably at the school she visited right before it was announced that she was expecting their first child. You know, the school where she wore the green plaid coat and played soccer. So, the comparisons are not really applicable to "normal" situations.
And, I think William wanted her in a situation where she would be available to be with him whenever possible. I think that was his mandate, not necessarily Kate's. Thankfully, Party Pieces
      was perfect.

    5. I agree that Harry may not find many women as accomplished as this one. She is clearly quite a bit more accomplished than he or William and Kate. I hope she is in it for the right reasons because if Harry is okay with this media blitzkreig then he has fallen hard for her.

    7. I agree with what you're saying. I really hope Harry finds the one, but I also wish he would look in the non-celebrity circles. Meghan seems like a nice girl, but she is so different from him. I don't know if someone who has craved for privacy all his life can build a life with someone who in many ways built her career through promotions and social media, which is what most celebrities do. Her friends on Instagram are also almost all in the fashion or TV industry. And the banana spooning pic, that was really tacky. If she gives it all up for him then maybe she is the one, but they can't live in two worlds. In many ways it's really sad. But in general, I think this is a topic we should be talking about in two years if they're still together. Now is too premature.

  27. Julia from Leominster3 November 2016 at 05:38

At this point my personal feelings on Meghan are balanced. She has some excellent points; she is very beautiful, very well educated and hopefully intelligent to go with that. (See below) She seems to have sincere and important charitable interests. She is also ambitious - something that will not find her favour with the royal establishment (nor will being American) but has in my opinion, been too much downgraded in the past.

I can't think that been divorced should matter after Camilla. It would be hypocritical. And there is a positive precedent - Letizia in Spain - of course, in both cases the former spouse was very discreet - and a super dose of discretion, giant size, is what Meghan needs at once.

I see some serious problems with her too. She apparently dumped a boyfriend cold because of Harry. She also has had several high-profile boyfriends. There seems to be some reason to think she may be trying to build her fame by means of relationships. I should note that questions of intent have been raised in other cases from the Duke of Edinburgh to Diana to Kate and the answers aren't always clear. But this reminds me more of Donna Air ad James Middleton is much less important than Harry to the success of the royal family.
Meghan, who was completely unknown to me, before her name was linked to Harry and I suspect it was likewise to many others, also seems to be trying to build her profile in Britain, although making something of a blunder of it. This also makes me question her sincerity.
That Twitter banana business can only be described in two words. Tasteless and vulgar. The same with her coy remarks about happiness. And who is spilling all this. Again, I find it unsavoury.
As with Sofia in Sweden, I also think that the racy past is a huge detriment. And Britain is no where like Sweden. I doubt that marriage would have been accepted as a royal one.

Harry of course has a colourful past as well, and I think youthful appeal is a positive thing - but at the same time there is a core of older royalists who can't be offended. And for the monarchy to survive - it must, it must keep a firm line apart from celebrity. It can be the Kadarshians.
So to me the best thing now is time. The long wait periods have recently been proved very beneficial in deciding who is ready to take on royal life and who isn't - Kate and Sophie are the success stories with stable marriages. Neither Harry or Meghan have a history of staying the course. So my feeling is that if they are a couple in three to five years, and are happy together and if she has worked to clear up her life - close her Twitter account and avoid statements and racy roles, and modify her work, (but given Harry's past, she would be wise to keep her career - recall Chelsy and Cressida) then she may well have the makings of a princess. But it is much too soon to tell that. And in my opinion, that will be what the queen will be thinking. It may not be the most romantic or kindest view - but at the end better caution than the nightmare of a public breakdown like Charles and Diana.
As for Grace, Monaco is not Britain and Grace was not Meghan - her private life wasn't saintly but her acting career was tame and she was a star in her own right.
As for height, I would be surprised if there is more than an inch between Meghan and Kate without heels and they do have a marked resemblance - both are lovely.

    Few more thoughts here:

Love the fact that Meghan has rescue dogs and loves to cook. Very good points. Don't love all the reasons - lifestyle blogs, clothing lines, adverts, that might mean she wants publicity. All that would have to go. So again, I think this relationship would need to stand the test of considerable time.

I'm not sure what religion she is but I don't think it matters now. (Catholic school doesn't have to mean you're Catholic or Julia would be.) Being Jewish or part Jewish shouldn't matter (Marion Stern.) Being Catholic did but the recent act changed that to my understanding although any children would have to be raised protestant to stay in line of succession. It's rather confusing - one of the Earl of St. Andrew's children is in the line of succession now - others aren't.

I think the marriage of Viscount Weymouth has paved the way, as it should, for race not being an issue, although I hope it would be handled with less contretemps on all side as has been in that case. (But then contretemps define the Baths.)

I don't think being a few years older should matter although since I believe waiting would be vital, Meghan might not be young should they marry. But nowadays women can fall pregnant well into their forties.

It seems most likely the queen will have to give her permission (or whoever is monarch at the time, hopefully the queen) unless William and Kate have a very big family, which strikes me as unlikely.

Meghan would prove to be quite a challenge to Kate and a huge challenge to the palace who is not going to be happy as Anon mentioned above about the feminist element, the political element (which she would need to lose fast) and the independence.

It's not an easy road, even for a second sibling and their spouse (think Margaret and Snowdon). I've felt for some time that Kate hasn't liked it as much as she thought she might. Other girlfriends of Harry have recognised the constraints and decided it wasn't for them.

    So time will tell.

    1. Probably most the royals don't like been royals and would like to be something else. Kate has certainly not given any overt inclination that she does not like it. She has performed well with what she has done and seems to have transitioned well into her role. Probably better than the other women who have married into the family. Whoever Harry marries will create comparisons with Kate, but in the end it is Kate who is the wife and mother of the future monarchs.

      Delete
    2. Julia,

I also think Kate does have some reservations about her life that she may not have had before. I have sensed that also. I believe it is entirely based on the fact that she has children now. Never having been a parent prior to her being a senior Royal, it would have been impossible for her to know all of the nuances of having Royal children in a Royal environment and everything that entails. It upped the ante all the way around. That all comes with the realization that there is no viable way out now. Her children will never have a "normal" childhood or a "normal" life. She knows the difference. They never will. That fact is not lost on her. Perhaps she wishes, at times, that it could be different, but it can't. She and the children will never truly have any alone time. Everything they say and do, for the most part, is a matter of public or Royal record. Her days and their days are most likely planned out for them. Security is an ever present concern. I think she is doing a superb job all the way around. I don't know how she manages but she does. It is not a lifestyle for just anyone, that's for sure. Kudos, Kate.

      Delete
    3. I do think Meghan's age may be a problem considering the fact that Harry has made it clear that he wants children, maybe even several. Even though I was lucky and had two of my children, conceived naturally, at ages 40 and 44, so obviously it's true that women can and do have babies well into their 40's, I understand that it's still not easy. The chances of getting pregnant in your 40's is only 1% to 5%, I have read. After age 35 the percentage rate really takes a dive. When a women is younger, say under 35, it takes an average of 4 months of trying to get pregnant. After age 40, that increases to 4 years! I can attest to that since it took almost 4 years, starting at the age of 40, to conceive my youngest child. So for one who is already 35, and still not married and actively trying, there's not a lot of time left to have multiple kids.

      Delete
    4. One point: Women don't easily fall pregnant with a first child in their 40s. The celebrities having babies at that age are often either using IVF or donor eggs, or both. I was worried enough about Kate waiting until she was 32 to begin a family. Harry would need to either rush things through, or risk not having kids, or find a younger woman. I think after this plays out he'll end up with someone else, who is a few years younger than him and hasn't got much of a past behind her.

So that´s how far we´ve come... "having to" discuss Prince Harry´s love life due to Kate´s not-so-busy-schedule? I´m trying to be ironic, here, right? Still, it was kind of the first thing that came into my mind while reading this post...
Harry and Meghan - somehow I think this would be quite the opposite to William and Kate, should they ever marry, that is. This young woman clearly LIKES attention, social media and the like - so no demure, silent, perfectly well-behaved at all times "royal-spouse-to-be" here! I´m sure it would be fun and the tabloids would get some good stories, so I´m sure THEY are happy at the moment. Let´s see how it goes.. I wish Harry nothing but the best, he deserves to be happy, but maybe he´s searching in the wrong circles for his future wife... show-bizz has the advantage of people knowing how to live with intense public scrutiny, still, most of them like exactly that! Grace Kelly had a VERY hard time to adjust to "royal" life - depression, alcohol, etc don´t sound like a happy life to me......

I don't think it is the "Kate lull" that has created the dialogue. At least not for me. I care about Harry even though I, obviously, don't know him. I have prayed for the boys since Diana's passing. One of my main prayers for them was that God would provide them with their perfect mate. My prayers, I think, were part of many being prayed for them worldwide. I believe God did provide Kate for William/William for Kate. I think God will do the same for Harry. Do I think Meghan is the one? NO. That's just my opinion, but it is honestly how I feel about that. I have been on You Tube and on the Internet to find out what I could about Meghan. Celebrity, "feminism", racy sex scenes, Independence, etc. are not generally pre-requisites for the RF. Not after what they have been through.
And, I think the dialogue was prompted more out of concern for Harry than boredom. :)

  38. The media has said that Harry follows Meghan's social media using a pseudonym. So maybe they are communicating via her social media and perhaps that is why she did those tweets. Therefore the public only sees her part of the conversation with Harry. Not the best scenario. She needs to keep the entirety of those conversations private IMO. She is said to have access to Harry's more exclusive social media. Perhaps she should move their communications to his social media. Or maybe they should text or call each other as that would be more private.

The media has said that Harry was supposed to fly to Toronto. They said he wasn't on his scheduled flight.
They said that the story about his relationship with Meghan became public a day or so before the scheduled flight and that for some reason Harry decided to be a no show. I find that kind of awkward particularly if he was participating in Meghan's "tweet" conversation. Why would he be a no show in Toronto?
