Kate in Festive Red Alexander McQueen for Children's Christmas Party!

For what is expected to be her last official engagement this year, the Duchess of Cambridge was guest of honour at Anna Freud Centre's Family School Christmas party.

The Duchess received a warm welcome upon arrival.

Today's visit reflects Kate's continued interest in children's mental health issues and the importance of early intervention - a theme she and Prince William focused on throughout autumn. Ahead of the visit, Kensington Palace said: "Her Royal Highness is keen to draw attention to the ways in which this charity is working to lead a step change in children's and young people's mental health care."

Kate first visited the centre in September wearing the Ralph Lauren Silk Austin Shirtdress to gain an insight into the provision of alternative education for children with emotional and behavioural issues. Obviously eager to hear about progress over the term, the Duchess was delighted to accept an invite for the Christmas party.

Kate joined families in festive activities designed to help pupils reflect on the positive progress they have made during the term, not only academically but in their communications and social skills.

The Duchess watched performances by students which celebrated their achievements. She also participated in a drum lesson.

As always Kate was a natural with the children and it was wonderful to see her interacting with them.

Plenty of adorable hugs like this were exchanged :)

Kate helped the children create artwork for their Christmas collage.

During a chat with a little boy Kate revealed her favourite football club is Chelsea. You can view a video at ITV.

More from the article:

'The Duchess of Cambridge has appeared to reveal her support for Chelsea Football Club during a royal engagement.
In a chat about football during a visit to a mental health centre in north London, Kate joked with a young boy before sharing a high-five.The Duchess told the youngster her husband Prince William supports Aston Villa before trying to guess which team the young boy supported.
She guesses Manchester United and the boy groans before asking in reply if she supported them. She replied "Chelsea", which is greeted with a "yes" and a high-five from the youngster.'

The Family School is a specialist alternative provision for pupils aged 5-14 years who are seriously at risk of exclusion and are struggling to achieve. Parents are involved to improve the long-term outcomes for these children using the individual family and multi-family approach which has shown success with the most challenging pupils.

Anna Freud Centre

The Family School is just one of the many ways Anna Freud Centre is working to reduce the burden of mental health difficulties on children and young people. The centre provides a range of clinical services, specialist teaching and training for practitioners and pursues a programme of cutting edge research.

The Duchess was festive in a bespoke red Alexander McQueen dress she first wore publicly for the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant in 2012 and again last year for a dramatic arts reception at Buckingham Palace with the Queen. It's a beautiful dress and particularly perfect for this time of year.

The garment incorporates several elements from the Pre-Fall 2011 style shown below.

Another look at the dress on Kate.

Kate wore her Stuart Weitzman Power Pumps.

Kate carried her black suede Mulberry Bayswater Clutch.

And it appears Kate accessorised with her Kiki 'Lauren Yellow Gold Pave Diamond Leaf Earrings. The £2,200 earrings are described as "Beautiful and elegantly small these 18ct yellow gold and pave diamond leaf motif drop earrings are from our new Lauren Collection inspired by the British ballerina Lauren Cuthbertson."

There's a lovely video available at YouTube filled with adorable moments and a brief video of the drum lesson shown below.

Before leaving Kate said "Thank you everyone. It’s been so fantastic to see you all again doing amazing things. Keep it up and have a really happy Christmas."

No doubt, the Duchess is looking forward to celebrating Christmas at Anmer Hall for what will be an incredibly memorable year with George and Charlotte. We expect to see the royals making the annual walk to Church as always.  Many of you have been in touch to ask if we'll see a Christmas portrait of the little prince and princess before then. There's no official word from the Palace, nor does there appear to be any expectation among the media, however, I think there's a good chance we might see a photo of the adorable pair.

In the meantime, we can expect to see arrival photos of William and Kate at the Queen's Pre-Christmas luncheon by the end of the week :)

  1. It is so nice to see her with kids she is really in her element.

I loved this recycle. It is one of my fave red dresses she has. I think it would have been nice if she had worn a ponytail rather than letting her hair be all over again.

The hairdo that I completely hate,I am sorry to say this but I couldn't find a better word and pick one photo where her hair looks nice for ME.

Thank you for the quick post!!

It's healthy that we all have different preferences in terms of hair & sartorial choices that we hopefully can express in a respectful manner....livens things up certainly ;-)

I've always been a fan of her longer hair but I think her cut looks especially lovely today! She is just radiant. Someone said (so sorry I can't recall the name) a few posts back that Diana was the people's princess; Catherine is truly the children's princess.

    4. I like her hair down with this dress

and her hair looks so shiny and healthy. She does come more alive around children. I think she does an excellent Job in all she does but she certainly does seem to be The Children's Princess specifically. William chose perfectly.

Wonderful to see her at the Anna Freud Center again, and fun video with the drums. The kids must love her. I love that dress, loved it at the Jubilee, and it looks stunning on her today. Kate looked just gorgeous and very charming with the children. Perfect end to her 2015 events.

Today´s photos made me like Kate´s new hair style even more. In sharp contrast to the "bangs" she seems to feel totally comfortable with her new hair length and I agree with all who say it makes her look younger.
She really IS in her element on such occasions as this one today and it´s pure and simple a pleasure to see her like this.

  6. Another fabulous outfit from 2012! Nice. Agree with blue that I would have liked a ponytail or a half up/down hairstyle. I hope this shorter cut does not mean it is only going to be styled one way now. Agree with Rebecca that I like to see peiole wearing red during the holiday season.

I'm not impying a thing. Just making an observation. So, far I haven't seen any pictures at this engagement that are head on. Only profiles and nothing close up either. I hope this is not due to the DM pictures and that now there will be limitations to how she will be photographed during engagements.

  12. Happy Holidays to you Charlotte and your wonderful readers/commenters. Thank you for all of your hard work.

Kate's new do was bound to get a variety of responses. I for one think it was a great idea. It really positions her well among her counterparts - the "modern day princesses" of Europe. To me, the look says "I'm more sophisticated than I was when you first met me. Take me seriously, I have a LOT of work to do in support of my family."

As glorious as her longer locks were, I'm afraid they were just a little bit of a distraction (sorry to offend). I think this adjustment will help people notice (and discuss) Kate the person more readily.

    6. Great point. When I was younger, like most women in this patriarchal society, I tried to be "as pretty as possible". Then you get a bit older and realize you are actually more beautiful if you look less like a doll.

Side note: Does it bother others (as it does me) when people say "William chose wisely" ? I understand the sentiment but I don't like how it can imply that Kate, like other women, was just waiting to be chosen, and didn't choose or have a choice herself.
Merry Christmas to Charlotte and to all :-)

    7. Most of the couples I know, the man proposed (offered up the option of the woman to share life together). I think they meant that he chose the woman he was going to present that option too.
He could have asked kk or Paris Hilton etc. to consider that option. He instead ask someone like Kate. He had to have thought it through very, very carefully in choosing who to present the offer to, as so much was at stake. He weighed all the variables and chose to present the offer to Kate rather than any other person. In that, he chose wisely. She had the option to decline. Any man who proposes has chosen the person he is offering the proposed offer (proposal) too. Nothing wrong with any of that.

Loved this post! Love seeing her in red at Christmastime. Today in a US paper they compared this outfit on the Duchess to the same outfit on Kim Kardashian (she apparently has this same outfit), Kate takes it to such a classy height, to which, I am sure, McQueen intended it to be.
On a different note, I do really like Kate's hair long. The picture of her in the same dress, walking with the Queen with long hair, really made me realize, I really love her long locks. The shorter haircut with bangs looks a little too matronly for me and I guess one of the things I love about Kate is her youthful, fresh look. I guess for me (and I didn't realize it until now) part of that was her long hair. Anyway, STILL gorgeous, sweet and classic. Her personality is so much of what I love about her and she is a beautiful heart from all appearances. That's all that really matters.

  31. Hello Everyone!

And, a heartfelt "Thank You!" to you Charlotte for another wonderful and informative series of posts!

I thought Duchess Kate looked lovely and radiant in the red McQueen dress at the children's party. And, her shorter hair is growing on me :-) I thought it looked better styled today than at her Action On Addiction appearance -- a little fuller, very glossy and nicely flowing, especially around the fringe/bangs.

On a practical note, it might be taking her a little time to get accustomed to styling the shorter length. After all, it is a big adjustment in her usual beauty routine.

My hair is a similar texture to Kate's. About once a year I'll ask my stylist to take off 2-3" more than usual from the length, fringe, etc. and I'll struggle for about a week with styling it :-) Kate made a much more significant change. She may be sorting out what styling product(s) and brushes to use, how much time to allow, etc.

It will interesting to see if Kate keeps the shorter length. And, if she decides to keep the fringe. I do think this style without the fringe would be lovely and practical.

To be honest, I didn't like this dress as much the first two times she wore it, but I'm a huge fan of it for this engagement! Seeing a picture of the 2nd wear of this dress also just reinforces how much I like her new haircut - it makes her look so much younger and refreshed than that event with the Queen imo.
Kate is also really in her element around kids and it is lovely to watch. All in all, seems like a wonderful engagement.
It is unfortunate that Chris Jackson is the only one who got real access again today. Oh wells.
Lastly - my god, is it possible that Kate is even skinnier now than she was in 2012?! That dress seemed quite tight in 2012 (not in a bad way - just clearly very closely tailored to fit her very closely), and now it seems loose on her. In general, most of her 2012 repeats do seem somewhat loose on her. I hope the pressure isn't getting to her.

Also for a former accessories buyer, it is mind boggling just how boring she is with her accessories. I really don't get it. Wearing a new pair/style of shoes really isn't going to take attention away from the engagement. She at least needs to buy some new suede black pumps bc they have been looking worn and faded all month. At least this time everything matched. Sometimes I feel like she just puts on the first pair of earrings she can find without giving it any thought.

  38. This is my absolute favorite dress in her collection! I am so happy to see her bring it out again.

  39. I'm trying really hard to like her hair. I much prefer it long. She looked so much more glam, regal even. She looks so much like her mother now. Not that it's a bad thing. Something isn't quite right. She seems to have lost her glow, she just doesn't look the same. Can't really put my finger on it?

    ReplyDelete
  40. The Duchess looks beautiful, and the event was so appropriate to the holidays. She appeared to be having a wonderful time with the children. The new hairstyle is so much more in proportion to her dress, which is still lovely. I like the black accessories and the pretty earrings. And Kate looks rested now. My only quibble is that her hairdresser should have brushed the back of her hair.

Oh my goodness, Kate look gorgeous today! I (still) love her haircut and this McQueen dress is stunning! I agree with others about her lack of styling (often the same rotation of clutches, shoes and earrings), but she looked simply beautiful today! I love my Stuart Weitzman Heist pumps and love that the Duchess obviously adores her SW's, as well. Bravo, Kate!

Question: many of the photos I see of Kate on this blog and in other publications (e.g., Daily Mail) show her clenching the back of her mouth as if she's speaking. I'm not sure how to describe it other than to point out the first photo in Charlotte's post above. Is it just that the photogs seem to catch her mid-sentence often or has she changed the way she speaks? I may be the only one who has noticed this, but she is photographed looking as though she's speaking from her throat in nearly every post. Just an observation.

Happy Holidays and Happy Christmas, everyone!

  43. I LOVE Kate's new haircut. This style Is fresh, classic and suits her so much for the lovely lady that she is. It's a shame so many nitpick everything about her when, in fact, she's exceptional inside and out!

  44. The Duchess is so great at recycling outfits without tiring them out. I love this dress on her and the color is very appropriate for such an event! You can tell that she cares a lot about these children and is good at being mentally present for her visits. Can't wait to see what she wears on Christmas!

  45. Kate looks beautiful! This is a favorite dress of mine and I love seeing it again on her. The light in Kate's eyes and smile are lovely! She really shines! I love her interaction with the kiddos. You can see the genuine interest and love she shows. I know she made Christmas bright for those she spent the morning with. So sweet!

A lovely post to put us in the Christmas spirit. Thank you Charlotte! I hope all the readers are enjoying making Christmas preparations and enjoying the holiday season!

Charlotte - a very Happy Christmas and New Year to you and your hubby. Enjoy your first Christmas together as a married couple!

Secondly - I am loving the Catherine's new hairstyle. I wasn't torn one way or the other - loved it long, love it shorter. I think all around she is a beautiful woman and I don't normally complain over anything she wears. Love to see her out and about at her charities and am really loving the mental health charities she is choosing to support. Go Catherine!

I just read that King Felipe and Queen Letizia will be coming to the UK for a State Visit in March 2016. If William and Catherine are not in India, might this be another opportunity for a Tiara sighting??? Woo-hoo!!

Thanks again Charlotte for all that you do - love the blog and will continue to be a long-time visitor. Cheers all!
