Kate to Attend Fostering Excellence Awards, Plans to Tackle Cyberbullying & An Azuni London Giveaway!

Hello hello, we have a few brief updates and a giveaway for you today!

Kensington Palace announced an addition to Kate's November schedule yesterday. On Tuesday, 17 November the Duchess of Cambridge will attend the the Fostering Network's 2015 Fostering Excellence Awards. Kate will present the Fostering Achievement Award, which celebrates extraordinary achievements by young people aged 16 to 24.

The engagement follows on from an event Kate attended hosted by the Fostering Network in January celebrating the work of foster carers. The Duchess wore the Hobbs Animal Shirt Dress, her Stuart Weitzman Power Pumps and Mirabelle Lolita Earrings. The Duchess was obviously impressed by what she saw on the day and has decided to continue to support the organisation.

Kevin Williams, chief executive of the Fostering Network, said:

'We’re delighted that we will have an extra special guest attending this year’s Fostering Excellence Awards. The spotlight that will be placed on these young people, who have worked so hard with the support of their foster carers to change their future, is thoroughly deserved. Sadly not every young person has a positive start in life, but the Fostering Network, foster carers and all those involved in working with fostered young people throughout the UK will continue to strive to make life better for them.'

Hundreds of foster carers, children and young people, and people from throughout the fostering community right across the UK are due to attend the annual celebration of fostering hosted by television star Holly Willoughby.

A look at Kate's November calendar thus far:

  • 7 November - Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall.
  • 8 November - Remembrance Sunday.
  • 17 November - The Fostering Network's annual Fostering Excellence Awards.
  • Late November - It is believed William and Kate will carry out a day of engagements in Wales.

There's been a number of reports in the media in recent days sharing William and Kate's plans to tackle cyberbullying. The stories surfaced in an article for the Sunday Times by reliable royal reporter Roya Nikkhah who revealed the couple "are on a mission to help young people who suffer bullying and mental health problems" and will meet organisations including Facebook and Twitter in the new year for a "constructive dialogue".

Aides told the Sunday Times:

'The Duke definitely wants to meet them and hear what they think can be done, what needs to change and what he can do to help. It's an area that's being explored.
Their role as parents is definitely shaping their perceptions on the issues. As parents themselves they want to speak out and see what more can be done for young people who are victims of cyberbullying and all forms of bullying.'

Cyberbullying is an enormous issue especially for teenagers and as social media platforms expand so does the pressure on teens, causing stress and anxiety for large numbers of children. There are certainly areas of improvement which need to be explored, such as tackling trolls and online bullies. I hope to see the Duke and Duchess really taking this on with engagements, meetings, speeches and future patronage choices. It's a huge problem and one they could make a difference in.

I've received several emails from readers interested in adding a pair of 'Kate' boots to their wardrobes and thought I'd share some excellent sales and savings opportunities online. Callie shared an email to let us know there's a fantastic sale on Stuart Weitzman footwear at Saks Fifth Avenue with up to 50% off selected styles. The popular Mezzaluna boots are included, reduced from $625 to $399. They are almost identical to Kate's half n half boots by the brand.

Melanie shared news Kate's ever-popular Aquatalia 'Royal' booties appear to have been released in another updated version (presumably carrying on from last year's version, the 'Reece' which is discounted at present). The Danele Weatherproof Almond Toe booties come in several colours, retailing for $495 at Nordstrom.

I also liked them on Facebook, so that's two entries. Love that W&K are taking up the cause against Cyberbullying. So important. Too many young people have chosen to commit suicide over being bullied. A permanent solution to a temporary problem. But, when you are a young person, you can only see the immediate future. Tragic. Thanks Charlotte.

    2. I am glad that the Cambridges are taking up this cause; however, my reason for being happy about this is not because of "cyerbullying' in the sense that many think of it. Many think that it is solely about victimization, but it is not: It is really about mental illness and I see the tie in which the charity that the Duchess has chosen to patronize and it makes me not only happy but very hopeful. Many do not realize that the one being bullied and the one doing the bullying both are suffering from a mental illness. Also, I feel like some like to label many things cyberbullying when it is not: it is in so cases kids seeking attention, peer pressure and we aught to be carefull in this regard--this is where invention by persons trained to deal with and recognize mental illness is so very important in averting escalation that ends in tragedy. Tedi you mention suicide and we should understand that while many who are bullied end up committing suicide, the bullying is only part of the problem--the main problem is that of mental illness on both sides. Another reason I am glad that the Duchess is involved is because if it helps in anyway to lift the stigma of mental illness, it will in the end help many to be diagnosed early and be treated and go on to live a normal a life as possible. Best wishes.

    3. Excellent points, anon LA.Thank-you. I'm not sure that all bullying is from one mentally ill person to another
ill person-although bullying can certainly put stress on the most mentally healthy of children. Certainly it is true in instances of suicide. Adolescents are already so fragile emotionally.Parents
must do their job and help their children develope self-esteem, which gives the child the strength to
ignore or laugh off attempts to belittle and hopefully confide in their parents. Unfortunately, not all children have parents who take the time for
      this or are even stable-enough themselves. Teaching future parents will help prevent future problems ;
for some, the damage has already been done-this is where removing the stigma that seeking help has
brought comes in. Insurance companies need to do their part in coverage of diagnosis and therapy.

A wonderful focus for the Cambridges.Let's hope they receive the support they will need in tackling such a
      monumental task.

    5. Anon 04:35 and Paola you are so kind. Thank you both. Anon 04:35, very good point about adolescents and their fragile emotions and that is exactly the reason that it is important not to label every incidence of acting out or outrageous behavior as bullying /cyberbullying as the case may be. I think the health professional is important in order to counsel and assess whether persons or person are in need of further evaluation or treatment --this is where I think that the charity is helpful.

Lastly thanks to Charlotte as always for providing the forum and of course the lovely Duchess for shining a light on mental illness.

      Regards.

    6. Modern technology has brought bullying into victims' homes; children are not just dealing with it on the way to school, in the classroom, etc. These days, what parents may assume is quiet time before bed may be a very different experience for the child/adolescent. This is an extremely important issue for the Cambridge's to address and, as young parents, they are in an ideal position to do so; their ages will make it easier for victims and families to relate to them (vs. Charles or the Queen, for example, attempting to deliver the same message).

And in no way do I wish to minimize the mental health aspect of this in cases where it applies. Absolutely not. But I do wonder if it is a factor in the majority of cases. This is just my opinion and if someone has facts to the contrary, I hope you will share them.

I do agree that peer pressure has a lot to do with it. It may be "popular" to be mean if a child is perceived as being weaker or simply different in some way (language, culture, appearance, etc.).

Other important factors are low self-esteem, unhappiness, and resentment on the bully's part. Bullying someone makes them feel better about themselves...and fellow bullies will look up to them.

Regardless of the exact reason(s) for it, however, I think the common thread is a lack of empathy.

Bottomline... AMEN to W&K for taking it on.

    7. Everyone chiming on this issue of bullying and mental illness make valid points and I am glad that we are having a conversation that says, we recognize bullying but we also see a bigger problem. One that is truly complex and will need trained mental health professionals to intervene, treat and monitor cases. Of course, kudos to the individuals who saw the need and began this charity in the first place. I am glad that the Duke and Duchess are shining the spot light on this issue.

  33. Kate and Pippa have been victims of cyber bullying them selves especially after the media hype of the wedding faded away. Kate has her security, established relationship, image up lift, the support of both sides of the family, many other benefit and PR/press staff. I hurt for Pippa. I can't imagine being a sister in her place. For a girl who is not married yet, the public gives opinion from A-Z of her everything. The men who date her after 2012 might be secured, confident and courageous types, and that was Nico. She broke up with him too recently.

I could not agree more with a lot of this. On the last post, I saw someone comment that Pippa is luckier than Kate, because she has the benefits without the pitfalls of royal life. I entirely disagree with that. For example, the Daily Mail published pictures of Pippa entering an ex's house at night, and then leaving the next morning in the same clothes. Kate, simply by being royal, is protected from pictures like that being published. The royals are given special treatment, and so Kate avoids most pap pictures being published, not to mention, has taxpayer-funded security that she uses to stop taxpayers from taking pictures of her. and, as you said, she has a PR staff. Pippa gets a lot of attention because of her sister, but has no protection. Kate also has guaranteed income and housing for the rest of her life - even if William and her squander his entire inheritance, they will receive Duchy money when he is Prince of Wales and then King. Pippa does not have that same guarantee of income or housing. Now I'm not trying to make it seem like Pippa's life is terrible, because she is undoubtedly an incredibly privileged young woman, but I do think she deserves our sympathy more than Kate.

      Delete
    2. Maggie, I do have a lot of sympathy for Pippa but I have to say that she was walking a very fine line when she started accepting free items of clothing, bags and jewelry from designers and had to parade them around. She could have and should have shut down the media craze from day one, but someone must have advised her poorly to try to use it.

      Delete
    3. Anon 15 - stating negative opinions on people's actions does not constitute bullying. I think that you grossly overstate the difficulties of Kate's life. Life as a pubic figure come with certain tenets, one of which is to be accountable to the public. When the public does that it is not bullying.

      Delete
    4. Being fair with Kate, she got the lion's share of paps attention at the beginning. She was followed everywhere as we know. But you are right on this one Maggie, things changed for her. For instance she rarely got papped while shopping, in the past it was very common.

On the other hand, I have mixed feelings about Pippa. She doesn't deserve, as no one does bullying and following around. But she had a choice and she made it. She took all the opportunities that came with her fame. She was everywhere. Writing books, columns, posing for pics. Slowly became a socilaite, a celebrity.
Nowadays, you can only hear from her because of her exes. Her 15-minute fame is gone. I am very curious what is next for her.

      Delete
    5. Totally agree, Anon 15 and Maggie.

      Delete
    6. I wholeheartedly agree. On top of not having the security of guaranteed income or housing, protection from paps or full-time PR staff, she has to contend with creating a fulfilling life in the spotlight without embarrassing her royal relatives. She wants to be an author, but everything she writes has to be cleared through royal channels. She was prevented from doing much press for her book. She wants to be a TV correspondent, but she has restrictions on what she can say or be involved in reporting, so that gets squashed. She seems ambitious and determined to be more than just a socialite, but being constricted by The Firm without actually being a part of it must be incredibly frustrating.

Interesting discussion. I agree with you, MusingLen. Things aren't always black and white, but just the fact that she has no security has got to be an issue.

    8. I read a couple of comments about Pippa a while ago, one from Ingrid Seward I believe and one from a longtime neighbor of the Middletons. Seward's opinion was like yours Maggie, she said she felt very sorry for Pippa because she had all the downside of royal life but none of the upside. And the neighbor said Carole Middleton had said she was constantly worried about Pippa since the wedding because she was getting enormous attention, but unlike Kate had none of the protection.

Like Blue27, I have mixed feelings on Pippa. I do feel sorry for her to a point, she gets a lot of unwelcome attention, the scrutiny on potential partners has to be unbearable, and she doesn't have the resources of the royals to escape to. I also remember reading that the publishers of her party book were astounded at the demands and restrictions placed on her for press availability, which I didn't think was fair at all given she's not a member of the BRF, but maybe she agreed to it to keep Kate or William happy.

On the other hand, Pippa readily accepted a lot of the offers that came flooding in after the wedding, offers that only came in because of her sister's position. I personally wouldn't be surprised if she was privately regretting some of that, but it's hard to get the Genie back in the bottle!

I think it's why many Brits don't know what to make of the Middletons, they've never seen royal in-laws with a profile like this, with the exception maybe of the ghastly Charles Spencer. But you'd be hard pressed to find someone who could name other in-laws. I think Pippa and James have taken full advantage of the attention when it suited them, regarding business ventures, personal pursuits, etc, so it's hard to turn that off when it no longer suits you. I remember James Middleton on American television saying he wished sometimes he could just be James and I thought... if you were Just James you wouldn't be in front of millions right now promoting your business :)

      I certainly don't envy them.

It is good you brought up the photo posted by the dailymail when she came out of her ex-boyfriend’s apartment/watched evening and morning/with the same dress. That is not only a grave violation of privacy, but robbing some one of their life’s dignity. What is going on? Are they trying to be unpaid private eye for Nico? Pippa and Nico were seen in loving embrace only two weeks before that in London. About two weeks after daily mail posted the Pippa &Ex/overnight, it was announced Nico is now the Ex.
If Kate and her parents sued the paps for following her from her London apartment half a block to her street parked, when she was 25, I don’t understand why nothing is done on behalf of Pippa.

The 30 years old that made her sister’s wedding look smooth and respectable, and yet carried the cross for the last four years. I follow Pippa as much as Kate because she inspires me in her discipline of exercise, palate, cycling, skiing and so on plus her interest in writing.

    11. 04:44,
“stating negative opinions on people's actions does not constitute bullying.” Your quote
I agree somewhat. There is a difference between stating the negative and bullying. May be, you don’t read the dailymail.com comments when stories are posted on Pippa. From her looks, to you name it, what they post is too much. Pippa herself said it to Matt Lauder’s interview that, the bullying is too much ( I hope I remember correctly).

The case of bullying that is thrown on Kate is variation based on some general discontent of government system, expectation etc. When they attack her mother and loved ones, it is a form of bullying to paint some one way out of character when they don’t know her family up close.

You could not have brought up a more critical point. That is heart aching. What is this? What kind of sacrifice and "imprisonment" is this? Ok there is such a thing as "to defend the name"; in this case defend so many sides. In a way there might be much Pippa tactfully bottled up. Many of what took place in her life after the wedding, especially the negative and a loss of reasonable privacy and "freedom" would have crossed siblings.

Well the same media that put Pippa on a pedestal was commenting, they hoped she would capitalize on her current popularity. That was 2011, and she did. Well, the bottom line, come to think of it, all of you who said she needs guidance are right!

Pippa was interviewed and asked how is your relationship with Kate now? She said," It is the same except she now has more pressure".

      Delete
    13. I too think there are more cons than pros where Pippa is concerned. Aside from the negatives already mentioned here, I think she needs to be careful that the man in her life is in it for the right reasons. And when Mr Right does come along, she has to hope that he will be prepared to deal with the press attention that comes with the package. Imagine signing on to a lifetime of public scrutiny and speculation? I do not envy her, or James.

    14. My take on the Middleton's..... they have a successful business (a success they achieved *before* William met Kate) and this requires networking. So much of the criticism directed at them over the years is very unfair. If Mike and Carole were elementary school teachers, for example, they couldn't not be accused of profiting from their daughter's relationship. And while I recognize that some of the opportunities that came Pippa's (and Jame's) way were because of the media interest in the family, I don't think it's fair to blame them for going for it. Also, given the family's party business, it isn't like some of their ventures have been such a stretch. And, the companies that were making these offers to Pippa expected to profit because of who she is related to (a fact tends to be left out of these discussions).

In reality, Pippa has her own "can't win" scenario going on.

    15. Royal fan,
Sorry I was interrupted here before I finished my post.

I know exactly what you mean. There is that kind of opportunism; many people are aware of such calculated and advantaged based relationships. So far her choice in men had been reasonably good and lasting average two years.

The reason I brought up the Cambridge’s children is, the senior royals including W&H’s childhood photos going about their business on the streets are out there. The Cambridge kids with a nanny and security guard “can” be photographed, but the difference is, this is the era of terrorist and gun totting times.
As you might know, in US there is such a thing as “restraining order” by law, and it can be enforceable in a case of stocking and harassment/ a form of bullying. What the Paps do to celebrity men, some of the stars either hit them or knock them out with the Paps own camera. How does Pippa coming out of an ex’s home, going about her business all by herself protect herself? Most likely through the family’s lawyer/s. If she does not act soon enough, the worst is yet to come, and it will be an embarrassment to both sides of the family.

This discussion is also as much about principle, and the more people share their opinion the better a form of bullying is understood. Women get bullied just walking down the street by construction workers, by ex-boy friends who were dumped, by suitors who are turned down, and reputation destroyed by other jealous women who want their boyfriends for themselves. It is an endless and painful experience that cans be anxiety inducing and life altering. At last, domestic violence is understood better these days by the law and society. Bullying has a long way to go.

Anon 15: In response to your statement "If Kate and her parents sued the paps for following her from her London apartment half a block to her street parked, when she was 25, I don’t understand why nothing is done on behalf of Pippa." - this is because the royals are given special treatment. No laws are violated when those pictures of Pippa are taken, same as no laws are violated when pap pictures or pictures by private citizens are taken of Kate. The royals just have an agreement with the media for these pictures not to be published, and also use threats like saying they won't allow photographers attend their engagements if the photographers legally take pictures of them attending weddings. Pippa doesn't have the same leverage, unfortunately.

For everyone saying Pippa could have done more to avoid attention and to a certain extent, asked for the public scrutiny - I really don't get it. This doesn't apply to everyone, but I've seen many who say this about Pippa who say the exact opposite about Kate. Look, Kate had a choice too. She didn't have to marry William. William also has a choice. He can give up his spot in line for the throne. As many of you point out, they would be a wealthy couple solely based on his inheritance and don't "need" the benefits of being a royal. They could have foregone the multilmillion dollar taxpayer funded renovation until they were ready to be public figures. But, they choose to accept free things (or discounted things) and their positions rely on promoting themselves publicly. The royals get great deals on Range Rovers and other expensive cars they drive. They get free security, and free housing/remodeling. Yet most of you all say their public and private lives should be separated, and that it's not fair to say they deserve pap pictures simply because they are public figures. So then why shouldn't Pippa's public and private lives be separated too? The royals take full advantage of their public positions just as much as Pippa (and her family) does. I'm not necessarily disagreeing that there are things Pippa could have done to lessen the attention she receives (although I think quite a bit of it was inevitable in the wedding aftermath and it's impossible to know just how much was preventable), but there are things the royals could do to lessen the attention they receive as well, but they don't because that would lead to less public interest, and the risk of losing their taxpayer-funded benefits. So it seems somewhat hypocritical to think it's okay for the royals to benefit from their positions as public figures while deserving privacy, while also saying Pippa cannot benefit from her public position without losing her privacy. Let's not forget that the royals have not done anything to earn their status aside from having genetic luck in terms of being born into the "right" family. So yes, Pippa gets benefits solely based on her sister's status and not something she herself has done. But the same could be said about Kate, who receives benefits solely based on who she happened to fall in love with. Heck, the same could be said about the Queen, who only had the opportunity to win the love of a nation because she was born into a family that put her in a position to be able to easily do that.

Also royalfan - I completely agree with your point about her love life. In fact, aside from what you've said, it seems like she (and James) often are discouraged from inviting their significant others to important family occasions that they would be able to attend in any situation that did not involve royals. For example, I'm sure if Kate wasn't married to a future King, Pippa's boyfriend of THREE years would have attended George and/or Charlotte's christening(s). Same with Donna for James. It's also reported that their significant others are often discouraged from coming on family vacations when Kate and William are also attending. And yeah, it seems fairly certain that her and Alex Loudon would probably have made it if it weren't for all the press attention she got right after the wedding and really could not have avoided.

“So it seems somewhat hypocritical to think it's okay for the royals to benefit from their positions as public figures while deserving privacy, while also saying Pippa cannot benefit from her public position without losing her privacy.”
      Your quote.

I think you nailed it right there. That says it.

    19. Anon 15, I do agree that something needs to be done to protect Pippa. Perhaps the family assumed that things would settle down after the wedding, but I don't see it happening anytime soon.

And I so agree with your statement that bullying can be "life altering." Indeed it can. It's no laughing matter.

Maggie, I liked Alex. He seemed to be more down to earth than Nico (I thought he enjoyed the attention). My impression, anyway. And I understand what you mean about Pippa and James not including their b/f / g/f on certain occasions, but I also appreciate the reason for it. I've said this before...today's g/f could be tomorrow's author, and people cannot report on things they do not witness.

    20. It is interesting the hundreds of words devoted to Pippa's pros and cons compared to how much space
devoted to discussing the topic of this post and this blog-Kate, and William and Catherine's reported
      plans to support anti-bullying measures.
Effective distraction from their increased diary. Who's the next distraction-Lupo?

      Delete
    21. With all due respect, Anon 3:33, the original comment by Anon 15 was a clear reference to the subject of bullying as it has pertained to Pippa, as Kate's sister. The issue has been discussed, with relevant pros and cons included. Your own reference to "reported plans", an "increased diary", and Lupo, however, adds what to the conversation?

    22. royal fan,
You responded to 03:33 with exact precision it deserved. I am not sure if the person read the content of the thread in its entirety.

    23. 03:33,
Pippa came to the picture to sort types of Cyber bullying, media, law, advocacy, responsibility and effects of bullying on personal life. She was a good example that we all here know as topic in relation to the subject.

Lupo / may be not directly, but his distant relatives/specious, the bad kind of Bull Pits can be bullying. A different animal, the bull fighting bull also does its bullying though a game, dangerously up to killing.
      -------
To 33:33 and others interested in more anti bulling,
The thread above this had been discussing mental illness to be the cause of bullying.

Bullying in schools is being explored by parents and some advocates. Mental illness is such a broad term, which sometimes does not differentiate, unless specific diagnosis or reference to certain illnesses is discussed.

For children who bully other children in schools, I think they have to be identified early, referred to school counselors. From there, most likely, behavior modification under trained therapists, group therapy/one on one, parental involvement, offering alternative out let through sports and controlled social interaction might work. For adults, anger management is one of the remedies.

When the “sane media” stocks, harasses, buys such products, posts on its web sites motivated by money, there had to be some boundary set by law.

Human Resources offices of just about every corporation/companies have employees sign in acknowledging sexual harassment as a violation of ethics under their policy. That started may in the 80s, thanks to advocacy. These days they might as well put harassment as violation, and put sexual, general harassing, severe office politics and bullying under the term, HARASSMENT.

    25. I commented on reported plans..."to support anti-bullying measures"...earlier, which you would not know since I commented as an anon (04:35)
.In the comment in question, I was commenting on my impression of the trend of the conversation. I
believe you have done so yourself in the recent past.

My intent was to point out that, not only did Pippa actually become the focus of bullying-type comments,
the discussion also served to distract from what William and Catherine -reportedly(, since adm. admits it has not
been confirmed) are planning to undertake. Pippa became the focus. It is almost- Catherine is obviously approved by HM, so go after the next target. The speech-making dialog last post was a similar distraction from their increased diary.
I can understand why one would prefer not to believe there are those who want to detract from Catherine, for whatever reason.---------- anon 03:33

  111. In 2014, on route to Australia, as I was flicking through the onboard duty free magazine, I came across the Azuni Athena Aqua earrings worn by the Duchess and I loved it but for whatever reason, I did not purchase them at the time and duly forgot about them.
Roll on a year later, at work, I suddenly remembered them so did an online search and up they popped on my screen. As I did not remember the name of the store or anything else, I was happy to have found them so quickly.
Within 5 mins I bought them and when they arrived, they were stunning. The Aqua colour was vivid and the gold stunning. I wore them and got many positive comments so was very happy. They are just the right size for everyday wear, not to big but stunning enough for people to notice them.
A very good friend of mine lives in LA and is Royal Family crazy so If I win (please let me win) I want to send them to her as a birthday gift (her birthday is in December)
I know she will love them as I do.
Love your entire collection and well done.

Decisions, decisions... I pick the Teardrop Stone Cord Bracelet in dark blue/smoky quartz only because I couldn't decide on any one pair of earrings :)
