Vote for Your Dream State Banquet Look for Kate!

Last week we asked you to choose your dream look for the Duchess of Cambridge's state banquet appearance this later month and the results were absolutely splendid. The time, effort, research, attention to detail and thought put into each one speaks to the level of talent our budding stylists have. There are numerous suggestions for the Duchess which would look both appropriate and dazzling on the night. Aside from the sparkling tiaras and stunning ball gowns it was wonderful to see you all supporting one other and enjoying one other's looks in the comments section. Congratulations to you all on a job very well done!

It's been so much fun looking through them and assembling graphics; now it's your turn to vote for your favourite! The entrant with the highest votes will win a pair of Kate's much-loved Mirabelle Lolita Earrings, courtesy of the lovely folks at the hand-made, fair-trade jeweller. You can find out more about the brand and take a look at their gorgeous collections here.

Mirabelle Jewellery

And here are your looks...

1. Julia from Leominster - As you'll all remember, Julia came up the fantastic idea of asking readers to submit their dream looks for Kate. For her own submission she selected Chinese colours beautifully displayed in Matthew Williamson's Embroidered Lace Gown. The gown is complemented with gold Jimmy Choo Mei Pumps, the Teck Crescent Tiara as worn by the late Queen Mother, the Kent Amethyst Earrings, and the Royal Family Order.

2. Sonja from Bavaria - A sweeping blue lace gown with a flowing skirt from Milagro, styled with the George VI Victorian Suite Necklace and Earrings, and Queen Mary's Fringe Tiara. Indeed, both the Queen (then Princess Elizabeth) and Princess Anne wore the piece on their wedding days. The look is completed with a silver clutch.

3. Ana B. from Brazil - Ana chose a sparkling structured gown from Andrew GN's Resort 2012 Collection and the Jimmy Choo Abel Pumps. For jewels, several pieces from the royal collection feature, including the Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara, a piece worn by Her Majesty numerous times, the Dlehi Durbar Earrings and matching necklace.

4. Susie Q - A very princessy Tony Ward gown teamed with a pair of satin gloves, Gianni Mara Court Shoes and the Jimmy Choo metallic Ava Clutch. For jewels, the Papyrus Tiara, as worn by the Duchess at the Diplomatic Reception, her art deco bracelet, and the Queen's Chandelier Earrings Kate has worn several times.

5. Bea Escee - Chose a haute couture gown by Mario Sierra with evening gloves, Le Silla Pointed Toe Evening Pumps and the Le Regale Metal Caged Oval Clutch. To complete the look Kate's emerald jewels with an emerald and diamond necklace and tiara by Chatila, as seen at Christies.

6. Figster - A long-sleeve haute couture Fall/Winter 2015 Elie Saab gown styled with Manolo Blahnik Chaos Sandals, the Oriental Circlet Tiara, created in 1853 by Garrards for Queen Victoria and the Queen's Emerald or Diamond Pendant Earrings.

7. Sofy - A gown by one of Kate's favoured designers, Jenny Packham, worn with the Jimmy Choo 'Dempsey' Pumps and Kate's Jimmy Choo silver clutch. Sofy would complete the look with the Starthmore Rose Tiara, a piece which hasn't been publicly worn since the late Queen Mother's younger years. We also have the County of Cornwall bracelet.

8. IrishTeaTime - A red gown with statement sleeves from Jenny Packham's Fall 2014 Collection worn with the Strathmore Rose Tiara, the Queen's Pear Drop Diamond Earrings - also worn by the late Princess Diana - and the Royal Family Order.

9. Janice - chose the DVF Julianna Lace Long Wrap Dress, worn with the Cartier Halo Tiara Kate wore on her wedding day, and accessorised with the Beirut  bracelet and earrings by Annoushka.

10. Mia in DC - A cape sleeved gown from Tony Ward's Fall/Winter 2015 Collection with Lamb Warner D'Orsay pumps in silver and the Edie Parker Lara Arcylic Backlit Clutch. A sapphire, diamond and pearl parure tiara which belonged to Queen Amalie of France and was recently sold at auction completes the look with sapphire and diamond jewels.

11. Rachel - An Embellished Tulle and Silk-Blend Georgette Elie Saab Gown styled with a gold Kotur Clutch, Christian Louboutin Pigalle Glitter Pumps, the Oriental Circlet Tiara and the Queen's Ruby and Diamond Earrings.

12. Kirstin - Selected a gown from Kate's favourite brand Alexander McQueen's Resort 2016 Collection. Kirstin would style the Duchess in a bespoke blue version of the garment and team it with the Queen's Burmese Ruby Tiara, and the Royal Family Order.

13.  Nancy from Miami - would like to see Kate incorporate an oriental theme into her look in honour of the Chinese President's visit, hence she chose a blue sequin gown with a high colour. The Teck Crescent Tiara, the Queen's Diamond Pendant Earrings, Stuart Weitzman Heist Pumps, a rhinestone clutch and evening gloves complete the look.

14. Leigh Anne - The Caroline Herrera Cloud Print Strapless Gown teamed with the Christian Louboutin So Kate Pumps and a Cloud-Shaped Silver Plated Brass Clutch. A Belle Epoque Sapphire and Diamond Tiara and sapphire and diamond jewellery complete the look.

15. Paola Magi - chose a strapless gown for the Duchess to wear in a bespoke red with a matching stole and a pair of Zara sandals accessorised with a silver clutch. A platinum and diamond Cartier tiara c. 1920, new earrings and the Harry Winston Wave Necklace add sparkle to the look.

16. Bluefire - A long sleeve black gown with a dramatic plunging neckline from Temperley London, the Nadri Starry Necklace, Givenchy Pear Halo Drop Earrings, the Cartier Halo Tiara and the Royal Family Order.

17. Blue 27 - A sparkling Embellished Marchesa Tulle Gown styled with Queen Mary's Fringe Tiara, Cartier jewels and the Charlotte Olympia Perforated Pandora Gold-Tone Clutch.

24. Megs - A sweeping embellished Elie Saab gown with the Papyrus Tiara, an Alexander McQueen clutch, Kate's Jimmy Choo Vamp Sandals and the Bahrain Pearl Drop Earrings - a gift the Queen received on her wedding day and most recently worn by the Countess of Wessex.

25. Miol Mor - A white angel print Alexander McQueen gown styled with the Papyrus Tiara, the King Khalid Diamond Necklace, presented to Her Majesty in 1979 by the king. The look also includes the Queen's chandelier earrings, Jimmy Choo Agnes Pumps, Ruby Clutch and opera gloves.

27. Sam Tennessee - An Elie Saab gown styled with the Cartier Halo Tiara and the Robinson Pelham earrings Kate wore on her wedding day. Their design is derived from the acorn and oak leaves which form part of the Middleton family coat of arms and they perfectly compliment the 'Halo' tiara, echoing the scroll elements in the design. Kate's L.K. Bennett Harper pumps round off the ensemble.

28. Balbina, Austria - The soft pink Valentino Silk Dress with Cape, the label's leather rockstud pumps, long satin gloves and the Alexander McQueen Leather Box Clutch. The look is accessorised with the Teck Crescent Tiara, Queen Mary's Collet Earrings and the George VI Festoon Necklace.

  1. Hi Charlotte! I just want to thank you for the huge amount of work you have put into this project, you are incredible!

I am not sure wheter it will still be possible to change it, but I had chosen the Grand Duchess Vladimir tiara with pearls, but it somehow happened that in the pic of my dress, jewels and so on which you used in this post, there is the Grand Duchess Vladimir tiara pictured with emeralds. The emeralds just don't go with the rubies and the bordeaux dress, you know? Is it still possible to fix that? Again, thank you sooo much!!

    2. No need to apologize at all, this must have been so much work and all the links must be really confusing! :)

That's such a great dress and when I saw those emeralds, I thought, I bet that wasn't what was intended.. Charlotte has done a brilliant job - truly amazing with all those confusing links - especially, when a tiara can take more than one form. Glad it's sorted now and the emeralds have returned to their rightful place with Ana's choice. (That tiara can also be worn with neither emeralds or pearls which I love too.)

    1. I meant Catherine (age 11), sorry. I was in the middle of some busy "mom time" and was so excited about everyone's designs, in my exuberance, I did my texting anyway in the middle of "mom, can I do this?", "mom, where is my clarinet case", ........ Sorry Catherine (age 11)

    2. If you are the same Catherine how has number 51, congrats to you, that was my pick. You have such a nice taste.

My necklace meant to be different too, but please do not bother with this Charlotte. It makes little or no difference at all, I think everybody looks at the dress first.:))

But I have a suggestion for a poll maybe next time. Because this variety we can see, I really wonder what age group created these superb gowns. It would be so interesting to see the supporters, at least their age;)))

    3. Hello Blue,

I double checked your necklace link and it goes to a general google images page. Would you please be so kind as to send me a link and I'll update immediately :)

    4. Don't bother with it, please, seriously, the amount of work you have already put into this is awesome. I didn't find a link, only the Cartier site, if I was a billionaire, I would definetely be complaining about the Cartier website because it is so lame:)) Thanks anyway!!:) I hope you had a little fun with the post as well.

    7. Hello Blue,

I don't have a postbox address. I actually moved recently, something I think we can all agree is definitely not a fun process :)

Blue your link is going to a google search for Cartier Royal. By any chance is your piece?

Blue27 (6:44), that's a good idea! I'm also curious about everyone's age. Maybe Charlotte could add this question at the end of the post (or of the post announcing the winner whose dress got most votes) and the contributors/'designers' could comment their age? I'm really curious, too :)

I love that gown - it's a cousin of Kate's favorite blue gown. She wouldn't be the first royal to choose something similar to what she has worn previously - and we've seen her do it so it still could happen - that gown is perfect for diamonds.

      Delete
    6. As Julia said, the gown is perfect for the diamonds, Sarah. An ethereal combination, actually. I would love to see Kate in this look. I think we would all swoon :-)

    7. Julia from Leominster12 October 2015 at 13:19

Sarah, your gown and the one chosen by Sofy make me think of George Balenchine when he was choregraphing the ballet Jewels. The dancers couldn't wear real jewellery so he had to have his people find a way through costumes to get the effect. Both these gowns have used the necklines in a simliar way to those costumes. They bring dazzle but would not need a necklace.

I love all the bling put forward with the gowns chosen here and especially the use of my favourite ruby necklace which the queen doesn't wear anymore, and isn't likely to as it requires a low neckline and which I would like to see lent to Kate. At the same time, because Kate is young, I actually would like to see her not wear a necklace for this first banquet - perhaps putting emphasis on the tiara and earrings - and both these dresses as well as several others such as Sunny's, Anon 15's and Sunshine's would put interest at the neckline without jewels. (Although I love all the necklaces chosen.)

All of the looks submittied are beautiful, appropriate and are not matronly. I have just a couple thoughts on some of the submissions.

Look #10 - Mia in DC - The jewelry you chose makes the simple elegance of this dress even more amazing. It would be amazing if someone bought that set and gifted it to Catherine. Beautiful choices.

Look #21 - Couch Potato - I loved the look when you posted the link and I still think it is a stunning dress. I think since the jewelry you chose are things she has already worn makes this look a very likely choice for Catherine. Beautiful.

Look #24 - Megs - I love Saab gowns. They are so beautiful. I am not sure I love the color of this gown, maybe one of the under layers of the skirt could be changed to red to add a little more flair to it for the Chinese dinner. I think most Saab gowns would be perfect for Catherine. I wish she would wear Saab and Murad.

Look #25 - Mioi Mor - That dress is fabulous. The print isn't too loud or overwhelming and the ethereal flavor of the fabric makes it amazing. I think this dress was made for Catherine, or at least with her in mind. It is by one of her favorite designers and the silhouette is one she has worn before. Beautiful look all around.

Look #29 -- Maria SP - Beautiful ensemble. I would love to see her in a bespoke version of this dress with gold thread running through the embroidery or something would make it all the more regal.

Look #33 - Jackie from Canada -- Love this look and I think Catherine is tall enough to pull off the gold overlay. Beautiful.

Look #42 - Royalfan - I love every single thing about this dress as well as the rest of the look. Catherine would look so regal in this choice. Well done.

Look #51 - Catherine - You have an eye for fashion. I love the things you chose and really believe the duchess would be stunning in every thing you chose. I love the embellishments on the gown. It takes it from a regular formal dress to something fit for a duchess.

    Look #57 - Anon 15 - Exquisite gown.

Look #60 - Anonymous - This gown would be fabulous for a state dinner. It is modest yet intriguing because of the back. I love blue on Catherine.

Everyone did an amazing job and as I scrolled down I was expecting to see at least one look that was completely inappropriate for the occasion or things that wouldn't flatter Catherine but that point never came. Instead I kept thinking I would love Catherine to wear each and every suggested gown. There isn't a single look she couldn't wear. Lovely job ladies!

I have to applause you all. The looks you have created are fantastic and so well thought through. And some outfits are just mind-blowing. I find myself sitting here, thinking: wow, how did they do it??!!! Excellent, excellent work.

Charlotte, you are such a treasure. I can't thank you enough for creating this global oasis of fun and creativity. Thanks you so much for your hard work!

I just want to add that my outfit (28) was supposed to have black satin gloves and the shoes in soft pink/blush, same colour as dress. I apologize if the links supplied were not precise enough. For me, it makes quite a difference.

Have fun everyone, browsing the beautiful outfits and watching the votes coming in!

This is one of my favorite all-time posts of your blog--such a gorgeous range and every look exquisite. Can't wait to see what Catherine will actually wear. I sort of hope she surprises every single one of us with something different, and yet exactly what we all could agree is a gorgeous look too.

  21. Charlotte thank you for all this work! So many fabulous looks, hard to decide!

    I voted for number 24 after much deliberation. My semi-finalists were numbers 2, 4, 9, 14, 18, 29, 45, 51, 54, 55 and 57.

    1. Sofy,
#24 was among the first round of 14 which came close. There were two items I hesitated about; and had to move on. As strange as this may sound, to this day, I have had difficulty imagining Kate with a tiara. Most likely, it is because, we never saw her wear one except her wedding day, and a brief profile in the car with another tiara. The selection that made it easiest for me to keep picturing Kate with tiara was one of my two finalists.

      Delete
  22. It was not easy to vote. All of them are wonderful; I tried to follow my criteria, and still got torn between two finalists. I came to confirm and understand why beauty pageant judges include other criteria as it fits current affairs and politics. In the end the later reasoning added as a plus, my finalist took the vote.

  23. Many people might have gone through the dilemma I had in finding a complete set of jewelry.

To complete her emerald-diamond set is not that simple. Her set has its own kind of emerald color grade, new, glitteringly sparkling diamond pieces with long string. Bea Escee had attempted the concept in a single emerald for both the necklace and the tiara from Christie’s. In fact I happened to open the link last night and responded to the person, but it got lost while I was editing. I did not try again.

The one I found happens to have Oak leaf and acorn/some items found on her coat of arms and her wedding earrings. If William commissions a set around that tiara, the rest of the set will follow similar design to include Oak leaf and acorn. To match it as a set for her current set of earrings and bracelet is to meet the purpose half way out of desperation. It was made in 1855 and currently in British museum.

    Rebecca,
Since you are good with Photo shopping, can’t you complete the set by altering from the earrings and bracelet? Most likely, one to two inches strand of diamond for every rectangle emerald may work out. Can’t you elongate the earrings into one long strand, and place her emerald every other inches of space, and build the tiara and necklace out of that.

First, I have to say: EVERYONE did an amazing job!!! I'm so very impressed with all of you! I'm sure it takes a lot of time, inspiration and energy to put a total look together.

    I haven't voted yet... I can't decide between 13,18, 30, 32, 35, 45, 48, and 53! (I think most of these are Asian-inspired.) I think Kate could pull off the form-fitting, high-collar look wonderfully.

Charlotte, I'm sure this took a lot of work on your end, too. Thanks for doing this.

  28. Thank you everyone who contributed to this exercise..it is so much fun to see all these stunning gowns in one place! When i look at these gorgeous gowns, I can't help but compare them to the overwrought, over designed, downright weird things the Stars stuff themselves into for award shows. Here we had 60 gorgeous pieces that Kate would look great in all of them!
Really wanted to choose 58 because it looks "so Kate" but she has worn cream for several other events this year, so I went with 4 (but no gloves). Still a neutral color and has the type of sleeves she seems to like.
My finalists were 3,4,24,30,34,43,58. I hope she surprises us in a favorable way tomorrow night!

  29. So many gorgeous options! I'd love to see Kate in something green, since the color suits her so well, or anything where she can dust off those emerald/diamond earrings she wore to the St. Andrews fundraiser.

If nothing else, I'm sincerely hoping we'll see a repeat appearance of the Papyrus/Lotus Tiara since we didn't get any full-on shots the first time she wore it! I won't complain if we see her wedding day tiara, but it's not my fave, and we've already had a good look at it.

  30. Hello Charlotte & Ladies,
I haven't posted recently, as we have had quite a sad time of it here. However, being able to come here to read, if only for a spell, has helped so much as a distraction. We had a Death in The Family & He was to be our First Grandson. They/We already have 2 Sweet Girls & it's interesting as My Husband & I help with The Girls & Our Daughter as She went through Surgery & Struggles to recover physically & emotionally. She is so sweet being concerned about our grief, but I find that my focuses are two fold: 1) To help the Girls' with their own confused grieving, which of course is so foreign & new, & try hard to keep life as normal as possible for them... & 2) The feeling that I would give Anything to spare Our Daughter from having to go through this.... The Baby Dieing:( We all feel so grateful though, that due to the amazingly high tech imaging today, that we have such sweet pictures of him, allowing us to see his sweet little face:) Soooo, while I did not have the Umph quite yet to jump on in & submit my own creative entry, I am enjoying the Beauty in The Creatuons that our Talented Designers have submitted:) They say that Art & Beauty are Healing & I'm testament that they are, at least they provide a respite that I truly appreciate:) I'm not sure I can make a decision just yet, still a bit foggy upstairs, but will do my best. I look forward to when I can jump back in with a regular post again, but know that I have enjoyed reading all the discussions & creative brainstorming of late:)
Thank you Charlotte for Your Blog. It is a Gift to Us All:)

  31. I had chosen an ensemble before leaving for Japan; however, the contest ran while I was away, and my computers are not integrated. Interesting enough, #32 Marci in Utah suggests the dress I had chosen. I was dithering between the papyrus tiara and the oriental circlet with rubies. However, I had glittery red pumps and thought the papyrus and pearls would make a calmer combination. So I've voted for that look. That said, there's any number of people on this blog who would earn their keep if ever employed by the Duchess. Great talent. Great eyes. Thank you, one and all for the eye candy.

    3. Kirstin,
Photo Shopping is a fantastic useful skill. Your selection would have enchanted the Chinese delegation including the Prime Minister and his wife. Kate and William are supposedly ambassadors of their country. It had been evident especially meeting, welcoming and also William traveling there recently. To blend purpose and occasion with style is important.

    4. Julia from Leominster11 October 2015 at 01:37

Kirstin I can't get in dropbox until Mr Leo helps tomorrow but there is something truly wonderful about the fabric of your gown that I wanted to mention. That's the red roses and how they would work with that most problematic of tiaras - the queen's Burmese rubies. I've always resented that tiara (if one can resent a tiara) because it was made from the diamonds in the lovely Nizam but at the same time, I've wondered what sort of gown would really redeem it and set it off. I think you've hit on it. The red roses are picked up by the roses in the material and make that tiara seem young and fresh - (your gown would also work well with the roses in the Strathmore but I really love what it would do for the Burmese.) Too often those rubies roses look like red blobs but with the roses on your dress, they come to life as flowers. So with the redesign to be a little less slip like - I think you have a fantastic choice that picks up the lucky red but at the same time is young, fresh, by an British designer and uniquely English.

      Delete
    5. Kirstin, your gown doesn't look ridiculous at all. I know exactly the effect you were going for and I think so would look lovely on Kate.

  38. Ana B

It was such a difficult decision because of the many beautiful gowns. I chose your design because the green is amazing and the style is unique and compliments the exquisite tiara and necklace and earrings so memorably. A sash and the family order would go perfectly also. I would buy that dress in a minute if I had anywhere to wear it. That would be an instantly Iconic outfit for Kate, one that people would remember throughout time.

I fear my comment was eaten by the ravenous blogger so I’ll try to repeat:
I didn’t vote because everyone is a winner here – there are too many fantastic choices. I did feel Kate’s first banquet gown should be by a British designer but that would preclude Catherine’s lovely Armani and all the Badgley and Marchesa choices while I think Saab should be made an honourary citizen so Kate can wear his gowns.
I thought important to pick up the Chinese theme and it was done in so many creative ways – Laura choosing a Chinese designer, Couch Potato’s fireworks, Nancy’s cheongsam., Jo’s beautiful Asian look and Marci’s very Chinese red gown.
I concentrated on tiaras – the papyrus seems to have a clear victory over the scroll. I was glad to see the crescent and my favourite Strathmore had their fans and some missing in action tiaras including the strawberry leaves, the Harewood, and the amethyst have come back to us, at least in our dreams.
A special thanks to the trio who chose the Girls of Great Britain – that has become such a war horse always worn with the queen’s white diamante gowns, it was hard to imagine it on anyone else. Bit Sarah paired it with one of my favourite Packhams and I especially love Gabriella from Malta’s simple red gown – it really gives new life to that old sacred cow and is such a great Kate look.
The Queen Mary fringe is often cast in the shade by the Kokoshinik so I’m glad to see supporters here – it isn’t worn much and would be a great loan to Kate.
Specially glad to see a couple of gowns by Ralph and Russo – maybe Kate will finally get the hint with such great choices.
Some wicked people here who showed toes – Figster, Sonne, Lize and Siddhii, the courtiers will be after you. And glad our mum-daughter team Jenn and Jordyn thought to include tights.
Bluefire – would love to see Kate wear the royal order with that dramatic gown – what a sight that would be!!! Erika, your choice is wonderfully sophisticated.
Kate loves blue and lots of great blue choices here from pale to Royalfan’s beautiful velvet.
And Special thanks to Charlotte for a magnificent job. Once votes are counted, would you stay with tour original choice (great with the scroll) or chose something new? I hope we can do this again although I know it is a massive amount of work - but not too many state banquets.
    Brilliant choices all!!

    1. Julia from Leominster11 October 2015 at 01:26

There are a couple of interesting repeat possibilities so we needn't panic yet. We didn't get a good look at the diplomatic reception gown so that would be essentially new to us and still allow Kate to repeat. The Malaysian white and gold gown Kate wore looked like it could potentially be adapted with a different overdress - dare I say gold and red to make a different looking gown - that would be a great compromise between new and repeat. Likewise, it seems possible the white gown she wore to her wedding reception could be adapted without the little shrug - and maybe with the addition of something else - although I tend to think she might avoid pure white. An interesting note is that the Packham teal gown she wore also was made in red for a Danish banquet where everyone wore red. I can't remember which noble lady featured it but it would be interesting if Kate picked up the idea.

What I hope not to see is Kate's red "Hedge fund" dress - a good colour but not really meant for a tiara or the Packham petral blue which has been overused of late - although adding the queen's sapphire loop necklace which she almost never wears would be a better choice than the Nazim. Black isn't really a state banquet colour so I think both the black lace and the strapless gowns are out. So I think even a partial repeat could be interesting - but am hoping for something new - preferably from our list! (One can dream.)

Secondly - wow to everybody's magnificent outfits! They are all so beautiful.

Thirdly - I submitted the Ellie Saab dress nr 31 but I went back and found a link where you can see the dress on a model and...I did not like it! I will post the link here and if you want Charlotte you can change the picture.

  52. All the dresses are so beautiful and thought I would highlight those I would love to see Kate in. I kind of sorted them for myself:

    1) Dresses that I think is beautiful and RESEMBLES those she has already worn:
40 and 45 both remind me of her ink blue Jenny Packham dress due to the pattern of the bodice and sleeves.
4 reminds me of her first Jenny Packham ever do to the color of the dress
9 reminds me of her black DvF Zarita dress
17 reminds me of the Alexander McQueen she wore in Malaysia

    2) Dresses I think would be still in her taste but with an exciting new edge to them:
    1, 2, 11, 19, 30, 32, 37, 39 and 54

    3) Dresses that are ultra feminine and would look beautiful on her:
    21, 36 ( and I love the perfect match of the clutch), 41, 43, 47, 55 and my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE...57.

    4) Dresses I think is very regal and princess-like
    42 and 58.

Having so much fun with this post! Thank you again Charlotte AND every one who submitted their choices for us to look at and enjoy!

    1. Diplomat Julia Leo Minister,

      Thank you for your comment.
Monique Lhuillier is not Chinese but has a combination of the following heritage and background.
She was a Vietnam-born Filipino businessman of mixed French descent,[5] and Amparito Llamas, a Filipino society figure and former model of Spanish descent.

She grew up in Cebu City and studied at Saint Theresa's College, continuing on to the Chateau Mont-Choisi finishing school in Switzerland. She moved to Los Angeles to study design at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM)

I love Monique Lhuillier gowns - in fact if I hadn't already been married for a thousand years, I saw one her wedding gowns about a decade back I would have love to have chosen. You chose an amazing example and there's a gorgeous burgundy one of hers among the selections as well. I hope Kate comes to wear her gowns someday and her Asian link should have been mentioned in my list. While I think Kate should and will wear British this first time - (with apologies to all the great choices from Armani, Valentino, Badgley, Marchesa and Saab) I could see her picking an Asian designer for a tour in the future. What a pity the Chinese couldn't have waited for the royal visit until Kate wasn't pregnant. But with Monique's background, her gowns would be perfect in a number of countries.

    4. Julia, how kind to provide a comment about each entry, and I do appreciate what you said about mine. I am in agreement with much of the voting, though I also think some beautiful looks are being neglected, No. 34 for instance. With sixty entrants, inevitably there are a great many at 1% and lower. And some of those are very beautiful. In a way it is interesting to see what observers respond to, and in another way it is a bit discouraging for those who have received only a few votes. I am happy, however, to rank somewhere in the middle of the group of beautiful looks for a state banquet or gala. I have learned a lot about designers of formal wear!

    5. Julia from Leominster12 October 2015 at 13:39

I absolutely agree, Anonymous. There are gowns that seem meant for Kate, gowns I can see her in easily, gowns that are absolutely stunning, that are getting very few votes. It is just there are so many choices and all sorts of things affect a vote of this size that aren't related to the beauty of the gowns.

Some gowns may cancel each other out because they speak to the same idea - which actually is positive. Placement is another factor - it's benefitted me, among others (I was first because I submitted first - Charlotte seemed to follow submission order for the most part which is fair.)

That's why I really wanted to mention every single one - and had I more space - I had even more things to say. The creativity of this has been amazing and in my eyes, everyone is a winner. I agree with 34 - it's a gown that shows off even better when you click on the link - and it is truly beautiful and perfect for a princess. (I love Badgley gowns.)

There are a whole lot more with just a few points that I wouldn't hesitate to choose which is why I couldn't vote. So I hope no one feels discouraged because I also think people are drawn to vote for the most popular gown - which is an absolute stunner but not so different from many others.

It's my opinion that Kate could wear almost all of these gowns to the banquet and we would be completely dazzled by her appearance. One or two of them might be better for a film premier, and there's no harm in that - one's coming up. But the wonderful variety, and the creative choice of shoes, bags and shoes, just stuns me and I wish I could see Kate in every single one of these looks.

      Delete
    6. Anon @ 03:53 and Julia,

I agree. Those didn't get any or many votes,
DO NOT be discouraged. All entries were victory worthy as said above. I don't know why the voting turned out as it did but do not let that dissuade you, truly.

Charlotte, this must have been a tremendous undertaking which you executed superbly. This is just a lovely post and I hope you had as much fun putting it together as everyone else (myself included) is having now, scrolling through it.

And to all of you who submitted these looks, WOW! I'll say it again I am truly in awe, just amazing looks from top to bottom. I wish Kate was more of a fashionista and would wear looks like this to any evening event; they're glamorous, fashion forward, breathtaking... they just ooze confidence. Maybe one day :)

I'm not sure what to expect from her at the state dinner. I doubt very much that she'll wear black in the presence of the Queen, who still feels it only appropriate if the family is in mourning or at somber occasions.

I doubt she'll wear anything too "show stopping", I have come to the conclusion she doesn't feel she has the "stage presence" yet (for want of a better term) and I think she may be concerned about overshadowing everything else, she is likely aware that as it is her first, she will generate attention regardless and may want to minimize that. BP may also feel the same and limit any photos of the Cambridges.

When I first heard she might be attending I thought she may rewear that gold and white McQueen from the Malaysian dinner, or even whatever she wore to the BP reception that we only got a glimpse of in the car.

Most of us would have something new for a significant event but I don't believe she thinks like that.

Again, just a huge round of applause for you all and Charlotte, I would love for any of you to come help in my closet for a couple of days :)

    4. I've been looking back over this post and just love it, like flipping through a great catalogue on a lazy afternoon :)

I know this is "Dream Looks" - what many people wish Kate would wear -- but I thought several look very much like something she would wear:

      42. Royalfan - dress definitely looks like Kate, nicely matches her sapphires, and it's a modest tiara (is there such a thing?!) and I think the tiara will be more low key. (again, sounds somewhat absurd!)

      19. Maria and 9. Janice also echoed the blue and I think Kate's style, and 11. Rachel also "looked like Kate"

      17. Blue27 Great gown! And Kate seems to have worn a lot of gold/silver/shimmery gowns to significant events.

      57. Anon15 is very Kate in my opinion and also I thought 21. Couch potato and 24. Megs -- And would love to see her try the elegant gown and cape from 33. Jackie

      28. Balbina's pink Valentino was gorgeous, reminiscent of Jackie O!

And 32. Marci - I love this gown! And maybe it's the tiara but I could see Diana gliding into a room in your look :)

I thought the style of the gown from 44. Siddhii was very like Kate and would love to see her in this colour, or something as striking as the green from 3. Ana -- Both gowns seem like cuts she favours.

My hunch is she'll go with a subdued ivory/off-white gown or something in a "neutral" gold/silver. And sadly I'm still expecting a recycle, hopefully I'll be proven wrong! (I have flashbacks to the NY St. Andrew's event)

    6. Hi Claudia,
The back of the dress is the same idea as her teal dress/link follows. It is delicately feminine with an elaborate cut without showing the back too much, but that can be altered with a shear panel attachment. I selected it hoping it is something she can wear, and most of all because it brings to highlight her beautiful emerald-diamond jewelry. The hair style from the teal dress will be nice with it too.

      http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2076390/Kate-Middleton-Duchess-Cambridge-shoulders-arms-salute-forces-heroes.html

I tend to agree that I think Kate's choice may be a cautious one - although I would love for her to be orginal and bold. I think she may be a little nervous about out-shining the queen - I sense a caution at times that I find unfortunate.

The queen has been on the throne for over sixty years now and letting a younger princess feel comfortable drawing attention would do no harm to the affection we all feel for her. That is one of the things I love about Beatrice in the Netherlands and Sofia in Spain - they seem completely comfortable taking a backseat to their daughters-in-law - not just doing it because they have to but doing it with real affection.

I'm not suggesting abdication - I certainly don't want that - but the caution that so often gets mentioned that Kate can't do this or that because it would bring too much attention doesn't make me happy either.

I believe it would be beneficial to the nation to have a young princess dazzle and the constant suggesting that "we don't want another Diana" speaks more of royal ego massaging than it does good of the monarchy as an institution.

So I would love to see Kate in one of the gorgeous princess gowns in shimmering pastels, or royal blue velvet, or Chinese reds and golds, or in eye-catching and flattering greens or in the stunning darks and unusual shades a brunette like her can wear amazingly well, or glittering whites and silvers, plus dramatic capes and necklines - all of which are well-represented in the sixty choices our international panel of Kate fans have selected for her. Very few celebrities even would have such a fantastic variety of choices laid out for them - and I say go for it!

    10. I quite agree Julia and I often think everyone worries about this EXCEPT the Queen!!

Fact is, in a way, no one can take attention from the Queen - as monarch she is always going to be the most important, respected, even revered person in the room. And she is quite used to other members of her family getting press attention, it started with her sister Margaret, then her son Andrew was the star (I know some younger readers will think I'm off my rocker but anyone of a certain age will remember him as the action man, handsome war hero!) and then of course Diana.

I think some things were maybe drummed into Kate a little too harshly by staff and maybe even family, which is making her so cautious. William is also known to be a bit of a control freak and I think she is desperate to let him be the head of the house, so to speak, and dreads overshadowing him or anyone else.

I also remember reading that it was Sophie Wessex who urged Kate not to show up in a new outfit at every occasion, because it would eventually be impossible to live up to, and even wore Diana down. (I admire Sophie Wessex tremendously and think Kate could learn much from her, but I do find this a tad ironic since Sophie has become such a fashion plate!)

I am by no means the Kate watcher or expert that most of you are, but I do feel she has almost become less confident as time goes by, when I was expecting she would become more at ease? Although as I've said before, no amount of time can prepare you for life in the BRF, it is a shock to the system no matter what.

    11. I hope she will choose a low key tiara :) as I am the tiara-iconoclast of the blog! I think that I had a lot of votes, 14, if you think how simple is the tiara I proposed LOL

But, Charlotte, I must admit that all those nice ensembles of beautiful outfits with sparkling tiaras made me less iconoclast, I started to appreciate the tiaras (not so much indeed, because it is really difficult to put a tiara on someone's head without this head looks a little too much... too much!)

I wish I could have said more about each gown, Paola. Blogger's length restrictions and the fact I had to go in and out of my browser each time to get it to accept consecutive comments limited what I could say. A few of my dreaded scattered remarks now:

I've been looking at the links and some of the dresses really move beautifully. Particularly the tiers on that cloud dress - it looks amazing in motion.
A number of the choices have very interesting backs too - Gabriella's particularly but a number of others as well. I think that's very important in a royal dress as the back may be all a number of guests see.

We have some amazing and pricey gowns but we also have some beautiful moderately priced ones as well which I'm sure Kate would appreciate, given her support of high street.

While it may have not come off as well in voting, I think it's great that a number of people tried their hand at making a gound bespoke because that will probably be the case for Kate's gown - great job to those creative minds.

A man's perspective is something we don't get much of here so I forced Mr Leo to make a choice (yes, forced) given he has some background with working with Asians. He was not a great fan of white (although there are many other royal occasions where it would not just be suitable but mandated.) The winner for him was Julie from NC "if only it was red..." But that's what she asked for, I told him so you're a winner in Mr Leo's mind Julie. He thinks the Chinese would really appreciate that gown. Maybe some others here would like to ask their hubbies or significants...

You wicked people who chose open toes, I'll leave you to the mercies of the palace, but I really think we should have had a shoe poll for those who worked within the confines of courts. We have some amazing closed toe shoes here- showing that courts can be exciting and sexy - even when paired with those dreaded tights.

I hope we can do this again Charlotte when you recover from this massive job - maybe a film premeir sometime (not the Bond one -too close) so we can go sexy and black if we wish. Tours would be another possibilty although I know they are a lot of work to start with. I just feel it really makes us all think about the meaning of an event to choose a look - and teaches us a lot about royal jewels - what a worthy subject!

I vote yes for a prize - or at least a recogniztion for the person whose gown comes the closest to what Kate really wears - we might have to have a run-off if several looks come close. Do we count a correct tiara pick!

Kate should be proud so many of us awarded her the royal order. Hope the queen is listening.

  66. Love, love, love your comments Julia. :)

I asked some of the guys in my household if they would choose their favorite gown and the looks I got from them were priceless. They need say no more about that, that's for sure.

If Kate doesn't show up with the Family Order, I will actually write to Buckingham Palace, politely, of course, requesting an immediate correction of that huge oversight. That'll do it. :)

  67. Aw, wish I would've seen this earlier, I would've submitted my photoshop edit from my tumblr. I'd still like to show it off though, so if anyone would like to check it out, here's the link: http://royalstylist.tumblr.com/post/130086985233/chinese-state-banquet-the-duchess-of-cambridge-is

  68. I voted for you, Catherine(age11)!! I liked your outfit, and loved the gloves with it. The dress also had a lovely line to it, and would look good if she had to wear one of those sash thingys with it.

    1. Catherine, what a privilege! Bluhare vote is a top dog :)
Bluhare I don't know if to define your vote a top dog is a suitable expression... I found it on the dictionary looking for an idiomatic one, hope it doesn't sound inappropriate.

    4. Paola, you're my second favorite after Catherine. Catherine has Shoe Mojo, though!

And you're welcome, Catherine. I like encouraging talent like yours!

  69. I'll just reiterate what everyone has so eloquently and truthfully stated, that all entries are fantastic and it was so hard to choose a favorite. Julia, you were so wonderful to say something positive about each and every ensemble. This blog is full of wonderful people.

This was not only FAB FUN (I did it while my husband was engrossed with another TV sports event) but also a great way for me to become acquainted with designers I have somehow missed (Tony Ward - wow!). And I also agree with the sentiments that: 1-you all are some of the nicest bloggers in cyberspace 2-it will be exciting to see which one of the ensembles comes closest to what Catherine actually wears at the banquet 3-our hostess not only possesses astounding blog admin skills but is also wonderfully creative to run this online event and a very sweet correspondent. Thanks to all of you!

  73. Charlotte please, as you are so nice and so kind, could you change my earrings? I posted two links and then I wrote in the comments that I changed my mind and wanted for my Armani dress the Queen Pear Drop Diamond earrings... I know I am a nuisance... but they are perfect with the necklace. :) Thank you so much, and if you cannot, never mind! https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/21/f8/40/21f8409abbcdc56826a82235fa9cba7e.jpg

  74. Admin or anyone else who knows,
Is the Papyrus tiara silver or gold tone? In some pictures, as in contestants 4, 19, 22, 24, 31, 33, 34,40,48,54 and 56, it looks like gold tone. It looks silver tone on Kate. It is shown in both shades depending what photo one looks on line. Please, I have to know for a big reason.

I had to search for a pair matching earrings for the Papyrus tiara since it is popular on this blog. It took a second and was made easy. Kate had figured it her way. What 24 did is good with the pearl earrings to match the Papyrus tiara especially if the tiara’s actual tone is silver.

  76. I am continually in awe of all the ensembles created by everyone! So creative, beautiful and insightful to the event. I must say, I am so embarrassed I didn't include the family order in my grouping! Other than seeing Kate in a tiara again, the family order is definitely the thing I am most anticipating seeing her wear next. :-) I'm glad that we are only a week away from the banquet now - so looking forward to the post covering that!
