Kate in Reiss Delaney for Wales V Australia Rugby Match

For their second outing of the day, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge travelled to Twickenham to watch Wales take on Australia in the Rugby World Cup.

Earlier today, William and Kate marked World Mental Health Day at an event hosted by mental health charity Mind at London's Harrow College. The couple had the opportunity to meet volunteers and young people who William described as "heroes". Our post on the engagement is here.

The Duke and Duchess took their seats and sang the Welsh national anthem.

There was plenty of anticipation ahead of the game among rugby fans. A look at recent statistics for Wales and Australia matches from the Telegraph.

'Good afternoon and welcome to our live coverage of Wales’ clash with the Wallabies at Twickenham, a meeting in south west London between the two unbeaten sides in Pool A and a match which will determine who tops the group and who has a decidedly easier, albeit theoretical, route to the final.
It’s the 39th Test between the Principality and Australia and the head-to-head record does not make for encouraging reading from a Wales perspective. They’ve won a modest 10 of the previous meetings between the two countries while they lasted tasted victory over the Wallabies back in 2008 when they won 21-18 in Cardiff thanks to tries from Shane Williams and Lee Byrne.'

As vice-patron of the Welsh Rugby Union and an avid fan Prince William has been supporting the team at matches and other engagements, whilst Kate has joined him to cheer the Welsh team on.

The game produced some memorable shots.

Such as this.

And this.

A tense moment during the match.

Evidently, it proved a challenging evening for Wales.

Wales were defeated with a final score of 15-6. Next Saturday Wales will compete against South Africa in the quarter-finals, and it's a likely possibility William and Kate will be in attendance.

Rugby World Cup

No doubt the Duke and Duchess were disappointed to see Wales lose.

The Duchess selected several pieces we've seen her wear before for the event, beginning with the love it or hate it REISS Delaney fit and flare coat Kate wore for a visit to Shooting Star Hospice in December 2013.

Shooting Star

The grey jacket is from the brand's AW13 Collection and retailed for $520 before selling out.  It's a collarless, wool-rich coat with seam detail to the front, back and sleeves, with slit pockets to the front, and fastens with a single conceal button.

REISS

It appears the Duchess wore her trusty Aquatalia Rhumba Boots for the event. The ever-popular boots have been widely available over the past couple of years, however, over the summer it was announced Aquatalia decided not to include the Rhumba in their fall collection. The Rhumba is still available in brown suede in very limited sizing at Lord and Taylor and Neiman Marcus Last Call.

Aquatalia

Fans of the boots will be pleased to see the introduction of Aquatalia's Damara Boots this season (essentially the Rhumba with a few minor design tweaks). The weatherproof almond toe boots are almost identical. Below we see the Damara at Nordstrom for $725.

Aquatalia

Kate carried her Tod's D-Styling bag - a piece she's had in her closet for years. There are a number of similar bags by the brand available at My Theresa.

Tod's

And the Duchess accessorised with her new Kiki Lauren Yellow Gold Pave Diamond Leaf Earrings. The £2,200 earrings are described as "Beautiful and elegantly small these 18ct yellow gold and pave diamond leaf motif drop earrings are from our new Lauren Collection inspired by the British ballerina Lauren Cuthbertson."

Kiki McDonough

Kate also wore black jeans, a black turtleneck sweater and a dark red scarf.

We'll be updating the post and adding higher quality images as they become available. Unfortunately, it can take some time for high-resolution images to emerge from the rugby games but we should see something over the next few hours (we hope!).

In case you're just joining us today, a reminder readers can vote for their favourite state banquet look for the Duchess. The submissions are amazing and I'm sure it's been a difficult choice for those of you who have voted thus far. Click here to view the post and submit your vote!

I hope you're all having an excellent weekend. I imagine we'll certainly hear something in the way of engagement announcements during the coming week.

I love this look. Both cozy and chic!! :) Very great!

I wonder what they have in their ear.. Looks like headphones... or the kind of microphone/earbuds for a cellphone. I see the cord of one on Kate and then William is wearing it (or one of his own). Do anyone know what they are? :)

Also, the game was really tense. A little sad that Wales didn't win... not for any other reason that if they had won they would have been up against Scotland. Which would have given a possibility for William and Catherine to watch the game with Princess Anne! But, you can't get everything you want :P

Also, I have to say this again. William looks great in glasses!

    1. Hi Rebecca, most likely they are listening to a commentary on the match, as in rugby, like many sports, it can be very hard to see or tell what's going on from your seat or some people just prefer to watch with commentary :)

      Delete
    2. Hi rebecca,
I am assuming that the headphones are to listen to the commentary. I use them occasionally at games here. The atmosphere of the crowd can be amazing, but the headphones help to follow the game.

      Delete
    3. The earpieces are most likely connected to a radio so that they can hear the tv/radio commentary of the game. A number of rugby fans usually do this when they go to watch games as when you're watching in the stands it is sometimes hard to see what is going on and tv/radio commentators have a better view so can tell you exactly what is happening.

I'm certain they were listening to the commentary as they seem both to be very keen fans but I do remember Princess Anne was reading a book during one of the Olympic events. It seemed very Princess Anne somehow and I found it funny although my friends who wanted to attend the Olympics and couldn't get tickets were much less amused!

  4. Before all the possible critiques begin, I want to say that I think what she wore to this game was attractive and appropriate in every way. I even like the Jacket. Would love to get a closer look at her new earrings.
I am so thankful that she didn't wear her "uniform" and that makes me like what she did wear all the more. kudos to her for having the chutzpah to be able to watch rugby. I would choose not to. The game is irresponsibly dangerous in my opinion.

Neither Mr Leo or I are keen on sports (a plus in my eyes since my dad was a fanatic sports fan - loved him dearly but not the matches and races,) Still as I would support Wales (just don't tell my friends) and he would support Scotland, it is just as well they won't meet for the harmony of our family.

I thought Kate looked very nice. I love the colour of the jacket on her - the shape not so much, so delighted to see it brought out where that won't show. Anything is better than the uniform although for her third rugby match, just showing up wins points in my eyes. Her family is very sporty and nice she is too, for William's sake.

    1. Julia, this is the Indian tiara I was asking about. It doesn't bring up the piece directly. Its about midway down. Constructed of gold, cabochon rubies and pearls. Says something to the effect of belonging to BRF and given to Queen Victoria. I can't seem to find much info about it but am thinking it might be a museum piece, unfortunately.

    4. No, Sofy, not that one. The one I'm referring to is mostly gold with inlaid rubies and pearls. The only site I saw it on is the pinterest that I cited. Its exotic and beautiful, amd I was hoping available to Kate someday.

    5. Julia from Leominster12 October 2015 at 11:47

Did Sofy find the one you mean Erika? I hope it and several other fine Gloucester tiara come to the crown as the Gloucester children lead private lives for the most part. But this one never belonged to Victoria as far as I can tell. It is too modern. It's not clear it's Indian either - just Indian inspired.

I saw an oblique Internet reference to a golden tiara - quite unusual looking that I think matches the one on your pinterest link, but it gave no information. I know nothing about it and can't remember seeing it listed on A Tiara a Day or any other tiara related site. Surely, it's not part of the crown jewels (I'm not going to admit how young I was last time I saw them in the Tower, but I think I would have noticed that over the years in some book - but maybe not. Is it at the V and A? I don't know.)

I'm going on holiday for several weeks soon (bad timing Katewise although I hope to keep up depending on Internet access), but I'm going to suggest you put that link in the comments of the two above sites Sofy mentioned. Sofy, you might try too.

From her Majesty's Jewel Vault would be a good start - same moderator as OSS. http://queensjewelvault.blogspot.com/p/tiaras-crowns.html She and Ella on the Court Jeweller are probably the most expert. Ella did the Tiara a Day and is doing the Tiarapedia so she may be the best source out there Tiarawise. (Tiara a Day was simply wonderful - I'm sorry the site is down.) Here's a link if you want to email her. ella@thecourtjeweller.com. I read A Tiara A Day fairly carefully, and I don't remember that and I see no reference in it in the list in the Tiarapedia.

I've found my computer won't allow comments on Ella's blog - why I include the email, but I have no trouble commenting on From her Majesty's Jewel Vault, although I almost never do.

(Note to all state banquet submitters - we have a mystery tiara that I don't think is the one above but which I forgot about - the Queen Victoria Diamond and Emerald tiara also designed by Prince Albert. It's quite a stunner and it's still out there. Tiarapedia hasn't covered it yet but OSS has a comment on it. http://orderofsplendor.blogspot.com/2012/12/my-ultimate-tiara-collection-queen.html

It's in the hands of an unknown "descendant of Queen Victoria" which covers a lot of territory but it would look fabulous on Kate. One of the top gowns in the poll is Ana B's which would rock with this tiara. I must put in a word too for Lady Germany's wonderfully beautiful and youthful paintbrush gown which would also be fablous with emeralds, as well as Bea's idea of pairing emeralds with a gorgeous white gown. Go out there and find that tiara for Kate, William!

In the meantime, let's get to the bottom of this golden tiara mystery!

Luxerarazzi's been running a major tiara contest and in the first post, listed below, it lists some other tiara sources I'm not familiar with - so there are even more tiara experts out there. There's an interesting link to
http://tesourastiaras.blogspot.de/ My computer is screaming about it, it's s termperamental soul, but the site looks interesting and may be another source. Good luck! I expect to have the mystery solved when I return, Erika and Sofy.

    7. Yes, Sofy that's the one!! I was hoping it could be available to Kate but am thinking it might be in a museum somewhere. I just think its beautifully unusual and would love to see it on someone preferably Kate.

    9. Yes, that's it Sofy. Thank you. So what do you think "in the royal collection" means? I'm wondering if it means it is archived as a museum piece which is great for antiquity but bad if I want to see it on Kate.

    10. Julia from Leominster13 October 2015 at 16:27

This is getting most fascinating. I hope we find out where it is and perhaps I can go see it sometime. It looks lovely (and would be amazing on Kate - I feel jewellery especially tiaras are best when they can be worn - it may sound silly but I think they pick up a glow from the wearer.)

I would contact Ella at Tiarapedia as she has no mention of this on her list that I can tell and it does seem like it should be included. On Tiara a Day she mentioned many tiaras that were in museums or even didn't exist anymore so I don't know why this one would be excluded.

Good hunting and I'll await the results with great interest.

I agree ladies. They are very pretty earrings but seem a little too dainty, feminine or "sweet" for this sporty look. With all of her hair down around her face, they kind of get lost. Yes, larger and a style a tad more compatible with the jacket, outfit. They'd also be more noticeable when she wears her hair pulled back.

Gosh, I feel terrible saying anything remotely critical of Kate :[ (Rebecca, help me with a face for that shameful feeling)

It is a brutal sport and incredibly physical. Have you seen Zara's husband Mike? His nose and his ears are the classic result of a career in rugby.
I'm from new Zealand - rugby is pretty much considered our national sport, and I don't know if I'd call it a gentleman's game. That would be cricket. Rugby players are tough, hard dudes (to generalise).

I just think he's really into it, you can see his jaw clenching. The only sports events I've seen him be more expressive on is the ones he doesn't seem to be as much a fan of, so he watches it more relaxed if you understand me :P Just my guess.

Many aristrocratic men don't because they usually have a signet ring on the pinky on the same hand. And if they do, they usually have a wedding band on the pinky together with the signet ring. William has no signet ring and reportedly doesn't like jewellry, so my guess is that he just didn't want to wear one :) A thing that might come easier to him since men in his surroundings doesn't as much :)

      Here's a link with a bit of information. http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-12986535. AND http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/david-cameron/9395171/David-Cameron-doesnt-wear-a-wedding-ring.-Why-should-he.html

Although it is very traditional for men to wear them in Germany and other countries in Europe and in the United States (perhaps from the German connection) it has not always been so much in Britain. Prince Andrew wore one when married to Fergie - there was not language in the service for it so she just slipped it on. I believe Prince Michael also wears one - no doubt because Princess Michael is part German but the other royal men, no, I believe.

For what is worth my dad always wore one - it was very special to him and he never took it off. When he died, my mum wore it around her neck for the short time she survived him. And Mr Leo wears one - (and it was mentioned in our service) So I guess that shows we are a bit naff and I wouldn't have it any other way!

Personally, I think it is a most lovely connection, but some men are very uncomfortable wearing any rings and of course I suppose some still wear signet rings. .

    8. Rebecca - Sweden13 October 2015 at 18:56

Julia, I think you are right. I myself don't see why some people make a big deal out of him not wearing one. It's not like the argument "he doesn't wanna look married when going into a club" works so well when you're Prince William :P I mean... majority of people will know he has a wife :P I think it's up to the persons involved. I know some women who only wear one ring and people ask them if it's not wierd that people only think they are engaged :P I love rings of that sort, but I usually say "A marrige is not in the ring, it's in the couple" :P

    1. I thought it was a very slanted and dramatic article. In a world where drones (etc) are a reality, of course the rules will have to be stepped up. And I love the suggestion that G&C are the most sheltered and hidden royal children in several generations. Really? I understand that Louise and James are not in the same position, but they weren't even seen on Christmas Day until recent years. And we're talking about a family walking to church.

    2. Thanks for pointing out this article. In all the years the royal family has been visiting at Sandringham never before has a request been made to restrict the airspace above it. If there was such a security concern why didn't the Queen request this long ago? If there is such a security concern why doesn't this restriction cover Balmoral as well? Imo, this is all about William and his hatred of the media. At this rate G&C won't been seen in public until they reach adulthood and then they will be ill prepared for it all. Imo, the Swedish Royal Family handles this much better by including the children in appropriate events, releasing photos and videos frequently, in this way it isn't a scary thing for the child to be photographed or around large crowds the way it was when George visited his mother and new sister at the hospital.

Anon 22.59. The way I heard it reported was that this is an annual occurance because the Queen and so big numbers of the Royal Family are there over the winter that they always have this arrangement and that it's just being reported on this time because of how it can stirr up the "Oh look at William and Kate and how bossy the are"-angle. And it looks like it's been woking...

    4. Apparently:

Flying over or near Sandringham House when the Queen is in residence will be heavily restricted
The rules will apply to Anmer Hall from 1 November. Similar regulations come into force for Sandringham House from 1 December to 1 March each year.

There are flight restrictions over Highgrove and during the Christmas break over Sandringham, as well as Windsor Castle and Buckingham Palace..

As part of the Sandringham estate, flying restrictions have been placed on Anmer Hall. Reason given is that it is at the request of security services.

    5. I don't blame them for not wanting to look up and see someone's drone-cam while they or their kids are outside at their own home. Don't blame them at all for that. They should have their privacy. Problem is there's too much available time to be private, but that's another post on another day.

Royalfan, I have to agree. I don't think George and Charlotte are "hidden away" anymore than other Royal children. I do wish W&K would release more official photos of them. Hoping we'll see one at Christmas! Rebecca, I agree with you also that these arrangements are always in place. I think many security restrictions are "standard protocol" and are never really reported on and that's a good thing. Sometimes I think it must be a nightmare keeping the RF safe in today's world.

Rebecca, on unrelated news, while doing some tiara homework above, I notice there is going to be a bipartisan vote on the monarchy in Sweden. Is this something of concern? Apparently, it is based on that even increasing bugaboo (if I'm using this phrase correctly) of equality and the fact monarchies are seen as incompatible with that. This is the main argument I hear with republicans and the one I find the hardest to respond to.

This is the main reason why I'm anxious to see William and Kate hard at work and cordial with the press which will have a lot to do with their future survival. Monarchies falling start to be like a house of cards.

A royal baby always helps popularity and hope the coming baby helps in Sweden. I still hope there will be a throne someday for Estelle to sit on and that monarchies survive all over - or else what are we royalists to do!!!

Julia. There has been put forward a motion to look at the monarchy. But as I've understood it, that is done every year by the republican movement and the only difference this year was that it was high up members from more than one person who signed it. The budget that went through actually gives the royal family more money. So I think that is a classic case of media making a mountain out of a mole hill :P

    10. In the past security has not been that much of an issue as far as drones flying over an area. As technology advances so does the security risk. As far as the Daily Beast Article - look at the source - a total republican rag.

Quite a relief. The tiara site made it sound like it was different in Sweden this time because more members from different parties were supporting the motion.

The coming of drones I think will lead to many new restrictions. The only trouble with such restrictions is where to draw the line - as many celebrities will claim it should apply to them as well. But since Sandringham is already covered, it is not really such an issue.

    12. Rebecca - Sweden13 October 2015 at 18:59

Yeah, it is a bit of a difference, but not so big I think.

I agree. But I think the laws should not be on the flying but on the driving. Nowdays kids can use them for fun. But if you have to get a sort of certificate (like with cars, guns etc) I think is a better way than trying to restrict airspace. Because even "nobodies" have been harmed by drones in the way that naked photos have been spread etc. But this is a classic case of the law having to catch up with the technology. So I very much understand why the royals make use of the air space laws until the bigger laws catch up.

    13. Could you define "total republican rag"? Do you mean republican as in US republican or republican as in GB republican? There's a difference. In this case I don't think it's a security issue. It's a privacy issue. And I do think everyone has an expectation of privacy in their own back garden, but don't try to tell me it's all about security. It's more about being photographed while airing one's tatas, tucking into a giant burger on the patio, or watching their children playing.

    14. I agree with those who state, and understand, that security precautions are nothing new and reporting on the subject can be used to make whatever point one wishes to make.

I do NOT understand the need for references to work (if the Queen is protected at Christmas break!) or "tatas", which I think is in rather poor taste.

I always love seeing Wills & Kate at a sporting match together. Kate's facial expressions are a hoot! William looks very focused on the game. I love his glasses...very handsome. :) Glad they could enjoy at match, but sorry for Wales losing.

Charlotte, will their be any more rugby matches for them to possibly attend? Also, we are a little over a week out from the State Banquet. Any word on it becoming an official engagement for W&K? :)

    1. Kate while Wales lost the match they had already qualified to move to the next level. There will be at least one more match and hopefully more if Wales wins. I am sure they will attend.

DB, thanks for your reply! I am trying to post from my iPhone just to see if it will work. I've tried in the past without luck. I'm glad to know Wales will go on. We LOVE sports in my family, but rugby is not one we follow. :) As you said, if Wales is playing there's a good chance Will & Kate will attend. Something to look forward to! Have a great afternoon!

  28. when will it be announced that Kate is attending the banquet?

I wonder how many of the people directly surrounding William and Kate at the game were ppo's and undercover ppo's, at an event like that, my guess is lots.

I'm not sure it will be announced. I'm not sure, but as far as I recall it hasn't been announcements for that on prior occasions.. or am I wrong?

I guess the pepople sitting in front of them are RPOs, as they were when the trio was there. I don't think it's a huge amount of RPOs though since there is probably already alot of security in place for a big event like this.

  33. I love the Delaney coat, loved it the first time with that whole look and love it still. It's always refreshing to see some animation in Kate and William outside of their rather stiff, mannequin-like public poses and facial expressions.
But a quick question - DID she wear the Rhumba boots or was that just a rumor?
I'm asking because if she wore black jeans, that seems like an awkward look, not to mention I'm wondering how she tucked those jeans into the Rhumbas, which are snug even on Kate's calves.
I saw some photos of them walking around outside the match and it didn't appear as if she had anything as tall as the Rhumba boots on.

A fun video of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in Brazil, 1968. Search The Queen and Duke End Tour 1968. There is some official business, but about one minute in, they are shown really enjoying themselves at a reception. The Queen is all glittering and glamorous, as they watch dancers perform. She even moves her right shoulder to the beat of the Brazilian music.
