Kate Returns to Royal Duties with Visit to Anna Freud Centre

The Duchess of Cambridge returned to royal duties this morning with a visit to the Anna Freud Centre in London.

Aside from Sunday's church appearance at Crathie Kirk during the Cambridges' visit to the Queen and Prince Philip at Balmoral, it is the first time we've seen the Duchess publicly since she and William supported the America's Cup World Series in Portsmouth in late July. Today's engagement marks the beginning of a gradual return to public duties, with a number of events planned for autumn.

A smiling Kate received a warm welcome upon arrival from Michael Samuels, Chair of the Trustees.

Our knowledgeable reader Skippyboo quickly recognised Mr Samuels as Julia Samuels, husband. Julia is Prince George's godmother and was one of the late Princess Diana's closest friends.

Speaking to People ahead of the visit, CEO Professor Fonagy praised the Duchess:

'In bringing attention to child mental health she is doing one of the most important things she can do for this country, "Most of it starts in childhood. If she is going to lead the way, particularly in an area that is stigmatized, she couldn’t do better than bring attention to the needs of children and young people with mental health problems," Fonagy adds.
Anna Freud Centre is "delighted" to be hosting her, but Fonagy also hopes to learn from Kate. "She sees things in that job, that role that probably I will not see and draws my attention to things I would not normally think about. So I look forward to hearing from her," Fonagy adds. "We have a common language.'

The Palace said Kate's visit would enable her to "see how the charity is working to lead a step change in children's mental health care". An area the Duchess is passionate about, it is understood she will make a series of visits across the country during the remainder of the year to learn more about children's mental health issues.

At the Anna Freud Centre the focus is entirely placed on reducing the burden of mental health difficulties carried by children and young people, using neuroscience and social science research to pioneer new ways of working in the area, while placing the children and their families at the centre of their own care.

The centre's namesake Anna Freud (daughter of Sigmund Freud) who was one of the founders of child psychoanalyis and her work has profoundly influenced thinking in regard to child development. Among her achievements, she set up the the Hampstead War Nurseries in 1941 in response to the social and emotional upheaval faced by the children of wartime Europe. The Nurseries provided refuge for 100 children made homeless by bombing.

Anna Freud Centre

Kate visited the site the site of a planned centre of excellence near Kings Cross, which will bring together the best people and organisations in neuroscience, mental health and education to work with children and their families.

The total cost of the centre's completion project is £25 million, with the centre contributing almost £17 million of this; a further £5 million will need to be raised before they reach their goal. If you're interested in finding out more about the Anna Freud Centre or wish to donate please click here.

Below, a look at the proposed centre when completed.

Her Royal Highness then visited the centre's Family School, which provides alternative education for children with serious emotional and behavioural issues and their families.

The school brings together families facing similar issues and offers education alongside therapeutic support for both children and parents.

The Duchess had the opportunity to see and participate in a range of activities which are part of the usual Family School day, including the 'SmartGym' programme that combines technology and sports psychology. It aims to build resilience, develop emotional skills and improve academic performance in children with emotional and behavioural problems.

Kate met a boy named Capote who described her as "down to earth" and "cool, chill", you can view his interview here :)

Kate wore 3D glasses as she tested her concentration in an interactive games used by pupils at the centre.

Kate selected the chic Ralph Lauren Silk Austin Shirtdress for the days events. Described as "the quintessential shirtdress", the houndstooth-patterned silk style flares at the skirt for a flattering fit. It comes with a patent leather belt that accentuates the waist. The garment retails for $1595 on the Ralph Lauren website. It's also available at Neiman Marcus and FarFetch.

Ashley Marie quickly noted the Duchess wore her Stuart Weizman 'Power' pumps in black suede. They are available in taupe and black patent at Nordstrom for $355.

Kate accessorised with her black suede Mulberry Bayswater clutch and Annoushka pearls.

And completed the look with her Cartier Ballon Bleu watch.

We saw Kate's much talked-about fringe properly today and having seen it in photos and videos I have to say I'm not a fan. One imagines it's quite difficult to manage and it doesn't fare very well in windy conditions. Of course, it's always important to try new things and freshen up one's look. Overall I thought Kate looked radiant, refreshed and happy. What is your take on Kate's look today?

You can view a video showing Kate's arrival at Sky News and watch a very good video from the engagement at ITN Source.

Kate waving goodbye as she made her departure with Rebecca Deacon.

It was wonderful to see Kate today, and I look forward to seeing Kate continue to support children's mental health in her royal role, as it's an area in desperate need of awareness and increased fundraising. Mental health accounts for 23% of the health burden in the UK and early intervention is key.

We have one other topic to share with you today. Yesterday Kensington Palace announced the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry will be attending the world premiere of the latest James Bond movie Spectre on 26 October at the Royal Albert Hall.

Spectre

Spectre will screen as the annual Royal Film Performance in aid of the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund. It promises to be a glittering evening with the movie's stars in attendance, including Mr 007 himself, Daniel Craig and co-stars Ralph Fiennes, Christoph Waltz, Monica Bellucci and Léa Seydoux. The royals will meet the cast and crew before watching the movie. We can expect to see the Duchess in a gown (and perhaps dazzling jewels) for the event. It should be a very exciting night indeed!

We'll see you tomorrow evening when William, Kate and Harry attend the Rugby World Cup opening ceremony in Twickenham. Televised coverage begins in the UK on ITV at 6.45 pm.

  1. Does Kate know her host well? There appears to be more physical contact (not trying to sound inappropriate!) than usual.
This look is a little different for Kate, but i like it. The. Houndstooth is classic, the long sleeves bring a little gravitas to the outfit and the shirt dress stylekeeps it fun.

I like it as well :) I have a big softspot for houndstooth though so ofc I like it :P

    2. It struck me as well that they have met before. Maybe she has done some behind the scene work with him.
I like the dress and I do like the hair as well.
It is great that she is supporting this line of work.

    4. I had the same reaction, touching a royal, what! But now that we have an ID by Skippyboo (amazing information so thaks for adding) it makes total sense that it would be family greeting each other.

Kate is back, and looking as glamorous as ever. I thought her outfit from head to toe was perfect. Loved her hair, and she looked relaxed and animated. What a wonderful cause she is involved with. I hope to hear more about the Anna Freud Center. She can do much to help children with mental problems, and their families, by shining her light there. Great post.

  3. Based on her interactions with Mr Samuel I do believe she has spent a decent amount of time behind the scenes prepping for this event.
Don't love the dress but I do think it's interesting how she looks so young and like her college self in some pictures, then much older and 'now' in others. Erininnyc

  4. Ok my vote is a "nay" on the hair. I immensely dislike it on Kate. It covers her face up even more. I actually like the dress but don't really think it suits Kate personally. Maybe with her hair up it would have looked better? I'm glad she's finally doing a charity event, but it seems a bit inappropriate to wear such an expensive dress for the occasion. And to be honest, it's the first time I've truly seen her look quite...haughty.

I'll hold back judgement on the glitzy premiere attendance until we see how September/October goes. I always love seeing Will and Kate at these events but, again, it feels like they're taking the privilages and not giving back to the people.

Thank you, Charlotte, for the quick post as always!

  5. Love the dress, hair, and accessories. Just wish the skirt didn't show as much leg when she walked. Distracting, and odd for a shirt dress concept. Not appropriate for business, IMO.

I can't believe it, but I even like the bangs.

New facility sounds promising from that information.

Let's see how consistently she follows through with this one..........

    6. I think it is just unfortunate timing in some pictures where the natural movement of the skirt shows her thighs. It will be talked about ad naseum not but it was probably a split second in time that is forever captured. In real like you probably wouldn't even have noticed.

    7. And Julie,

THAT it is why it is SO important for Kate to think about that IN ADVANCE. Wearing a slip always with event outfits is a good Idea, unless Kate LIKES to flash. One might think she does.

There are SO many pretty and sexy, yet modest slips to be had. To me that is WAY sexier than just baring it like that anyway. You know, pretty lingerie WAS designed for a reason. :)

The camera will capture everything! I don't understand why Kate doesn't take some of the solutions I (and many others) used to use when we couldn't afford to look unprofessional. (and in the dark ages, my legs were as good as Kate's - but for Mr Leo's eyes only or an occasional evening outing.)

Having a seamstress stitch up the skirt is the best if you're not clever at sewing - but pinning will work as well on short notice- although it can pull just a bit. It would have worked here and doesn't show if you're careful as to placement. A plain black slip is also good - I still like slips for that reason although they are out of fashion. And weights do help too for thin silk.

It has happened so often with Kate, I have to think she simply doesn't mind. Possibly it is a joke between her and William. Still, I love the dress and it is so professional looking that little incident will draw too much attention and detract from the purpose of the visit. I do feel by now she should take more care.

A minor quibble though in a good and impportant visit.

      Delete
    9. I agree Julia. Maybe she doesn't check the net for those flashing pics. Otherwise, I don't get why she takes the risk. She is old and matured enough- one would think- not to make the same mistakes.

      Delete
    10. I don't think a slip would have solved the leg flash because it would then have been a slip flash which, I think, would have been worse. I'm a little surprised at the comments about her legs. Since when have they become a naughty body part? We did not see all that much.

      Delete
    11. To me it is a big deal over very little. I don't think she is intentional about it. The only way to prevent it is to wear clothes with no shape down to the ground and high around the neck to not even chance an inappropriate picture. You can plan as much as you want but there are things out of your control. The weather being one of them.

      Delete
    12. The significance of the engagement means far more than a slit caught in a photograph. And if seeing her leg for a split second is a no-no, how is it better to see a slip that isn't intended to be seen?

      Delete
    13. This is the harshest group of critics. Of course, all the pictures where for one second in time, her thigh was seen. Was this on purpose? I get the feeling that this page likes to have people gang up on her. I need to stop reading following this page and I will.

    14. Agreed Jane!

It is getting worse with every new post. It always need up with a debate about all it over and over and over! One needs a Pepto due to ad nauseum aspect.

She flashed a leg for Christ sake! Who hasnt? It is not a crotch shot people.

In say this with respect ladies it seems to be the same people who immediately go on the attack. Kate is not perfect nor does she walk in water and make wine. Must we always dive into the deep end on every post?

Ugh ~ Kate looked great! Loved the dress even the leg...liked the fringe better with her hair pulled back.

    15. Maggie - Minneapolis18 September 2015 at 03:06

It wasn't just once that her leg flashed. Other places have pictures from other moments that she showed quite a bit of leg. Remember that Kate wears her dress waists artificially high - her actual waist is much lower and in some shots on other websites, it's pretty clear she was pretty close to a crotch shot and that a gust of wind right at that time would have given us one, or come incredibly close like when they arrived for the Australia tour.

      Delete
    16. Maggie - Minneapolis18 September 2015 at 03:08

I agree a slip wouldn't have solved the problem, but a little extra stitching or buttons down the front of the dress would have worked. And it's not like this was an unpredictable problem. It's the reason I'm very careful about picking this style of dress with a slit in the front - I've noticed that on me and others it often causes quite a bit of thigh to show. I agree that some problems aren't predictable or preventable but I disagree that this was one of them.

I certainly don't think it's Kate's fault that the media chooses to show so many pictures of the leg flash and focus on that, but I think that she is well aware that that is how they operate, and could easily prevent it if she chooses to. Either she doesn't care or she and her assistants are not thorough in "vetting" an outfit.

      Delete
    17. Why should she prevent it? It is nothing, one has seen this and much more thigh for the last 100 years on the classiest of individuals. It happens.

    18. Jane, I'm a new contributor, and I'm seeing a fair pro and con of how people weigh in on the Duchess' outing. There are many positive voices on here. There are definitely some that are critical. Those praising are rightly pointing to the time she took to talk with the children and interact with them. Those criticizing are hitting the frankly "duh" point of neither her nor her staff objectively looking at her in the dress and instantly recognizing that slit might get negative publicity, taking away from the visit's purpose of highlighting this worthwhile charity. It opens the suggestion that Kate does this on purpose because she wants what she does to be about her; that maybe she doesn't really like doing charity work but she'll "plug away" because she has to. Does she secretly resent it? Is she trying to be a (press) victim so that Will coddles and protects her? You're right, it was just a thigh. And just a button would have negated just a thigh. I wanted her to have a win for this outing and it came off dubiously ok. It's past time for her to have a clean, polished public history. If she's smooth, the choppy waves will go down and it will be better for everyone.

She certainly seems happy, which is great, but looks a bit drawn too. I'm not a fan of the new bangs or the black-and-white checks, but the dress fit her beautifully.

    1. Kate doesn't have to flash her legs to look beautiful. It is a little Kim Kardashian to me. Just shows that Kate might be insecure and trying to compensate.

      Delete
    2. Lol. Not a hint of insecurity to be found in a girl who will wear the same clothing as often as she does. It does not suggest that she needs to prove anything or compensate in anyway.

      Delete
    3. Maggie - Minneapolis18 September 2015 at 03:04

I don't think Kate is necessarily insecure and that is why she flashes her legs, although I have a feeling the raised hemlines during her first pregnancy were due to that, although that's perfectly human. Maybe she just doesn't see the big deal in showing some leg. Or maybe she just doesn't spend enough time trying on an outfit and looking out for "bugs" in it before an event. Maybe she just prioritizes fashion and looking good over other things. I think it's hard to say why she chooses to let leg show as much as she does.

That being said, royalfan, I don't really understand what repeating clothing has to do with being secure or not. In fact, she gets so much good press for a little bit of repeating that it could be said that she repeats clothing because she is insecure and wants to get positive attention. I'm not saying this is true. I just honestly don't get how repeating clothing means she's not insecure.

  8. A change is always nice however this is the second time she's had this long fringe that isn't blended. A few layers at the side would help a lot. Or a shorter fringe. Who keeps cutting it thinking this suits her face? Don't mind the dress but growing frustrated at the need to always show some leg! Great cause and am thrilled to see the Duchess use her position to help others. Just hope it continues!

    1. I agree with the blending. I wish she would cut it more like Princess Mary's hair. A few more layers would lighten it up so much.

      Delete
    2. I think a lack of blending is the problem too. The finge just looks chunky and awkward as is. I do love the dress though. It hangs beautifully on her figure and showcases her legs. I don't mind the flash of leg at all. It was not inappropriate imo and it saved the dress from falling into the dowdy category. In general, so happy she wore a dress and not a coat or coatdress. Welcome back duchess! Nice to see you!

    3. Hello magazine is reporting that she went back to Richard Ward.

    4. I wish she'd take a page from Pippa's notebook and get it cut and colored similar to what Pippa has. It's long but it's layered and lightened and it looks fantastic on her, not too teenage and not too heavy. Pippa's hair looks great and stylish.
Kate's hair is really starting to look dated and dull and not chic at all. Long, single-length heavy dark hair was fine for her teen and college years but she needs something a bit more up-to-date.
The fringe just hangs - as they tend to do if you don't curl them a bit at the end - and looks awkward. It's going to be interesting to see what they do with it for the State Dinner appearance. I'd expect Kate will be expected to have her hair up in some fashion and especially if she's donning a tiara.

      Delete
    5. Agree with the hair. I really think she needs a new hair person. The idea might be fine if executed well. Really like the dress. Think she looks fantastic. ali

      Delete
    6. I agree Erika --- I usually stay on the sidelines on these kind of discussions, but the lack of blending is what I think is throwing people. If you want the rest of the hair to remain one length, straight and long, people usually go for the straight across the forehead look. If you want the side swept effect, you usually have to continue to graduate the layers back through the hair.

In the very brief glimpse on Sunday I thought she looked great, now that I see more of it I do think it's unfortunate and doesn't do her any favours. And as others have said, will likely be higher maintenance.

That said, I'm still glad she's out and about bringing attention to worthy causes!

      Claudia

    7. I think she doesn't know what to do exactly to her hair, she would like some changes which is normal but she doesn't dare to do any significant changes. That's why the fringe, it is not the ordinary but can be corrected. This is my theory;)

      Delete
    8. Yup. I'm with the blenders too. Some side layers and a couple of inches off the bottom would look much nicer, and wouldn't really sacrifice much on her hair length if that's what she's trying to keep. Now it looks like she had them and is trying to grow them out.

  9. I love her hair. In none of these pics is it tucked behind her ears, she isn't playing with it and you can see her face in every one. A big improvement IMO. Like the dress too. Not buttoned up, but open at the top button. A little youthful leg showing. Very flattering on her. I agree that it is apparent that this isn't her first time at this charity. She appears to know some of these people well. A very nice return to the public domain I think. I'm very happy to see her back.

I wish Kate would find a hairstyle that wasn't in between too young or too old and she's got a bit of both going on.
I LOVED the dress, it's so cute and fashionable and without being too old looking.
I also don't really see a problem with Kate wearing a dress that's a bit expensive, I honestly wish she would wear more, she likes her high street brands but they're too "Kate" this one is more "Duchess Catherine" if you know what I mean.

A very important engagement, I'm excited with this new area for Kate. I suspect she's been working with Professor Fonagy for an in-depth understanding of the field - that's most likely why she seems to know him so well. It tells us what she may have been doing during these past months which could really put paid to the work issue - what I've been hoping for. This could be a major step forward for Kate in an important an timely area - for the first time with the level of involvement that we saw with Diana and other committed royals like Anne.

I was fascinated to read about the work of Anna Freud - something I knew only a little about before.

The King's Cross centre could not be more timely - with an influx of refugees with small children - many of whom may have seen things no child should see - as well as having gone through so much trauma. A huge benefit too for families with children with emotional issues. I've know some and it is so terribly difficult and frustrating for both the parents and child - and for other children in the family. It is a great area for Kate to bring attention to.

I loved her dress which is at once professional and elegant and the perfect shape for her but she does need to pin it! As good as her legs are, it takes away from the professional look I'm sure she is striving for. Not the first time, so she should be aware the wind does blow, even for princesses. But it is the most lovely look overall. Her hair looked lovely too although again the new fringe got windswept- it may not be the most practical look.

Thank you Charlotte for the quick post and for the link to the centre. A touching photo of Anna Freud.

Now Kate's involved in serious duties - it's lovely to hear too that we will have a special sweet with the Bond film appearance. We had wonderful choices in the fashion post for a film opening. It will be interesting to see what she chooses - something quite dashing could be in order as opposed to the formality of the Chinese visit - if it happens.

Thanks to the poster who sent wishes to me. The guests are having a good visit. Gone tomorrow.

Not covering them, just mentioning them. :) Because alot of people like to know what he's doing as well but doesn't follow all over twitter (like me :P) I think it could be nice since William and Kate are a "team" :) Like today.. he did both an investure and will have the tusk gala :) Just a thought :)

For one thing it is silk, lined silk, has a full skirt, a lot of tailoring AND is a RL design and brand name. And if she purchased it at a high end store, whether in person or online, there is the store's mark up also.

In reality, that is a cheap dress compared to other designer prices. Really. I am not kidding. There are day dresses out there typically for $3,000 to $8,000+. I just read an article that showed numerous outfits that George Clooney's wife was wearing. I couldn't believe the cost of each outfit item. Even the purses were in the thousands. Makes Kate look like a cheapskate by comparison.
And, might I add, I thought many of Mrs. Clooney's outfits looked stupid, ostentatious or both.

  16. Thank you for the quick post again!!

So she is back! Back with a new outfit, I loved it, this pattern and colour is getting very popular this autumn.

Back with the fringe, I am still undecided, there are pics where I would say, it is really nice but there are so unflattering ones too. It depends on the angle the photo was taken, I am afraid. I suppose time will tell. It is difficult to say right now whether it was a good decision or not.

And also she is back with her slim figure, it is a pity, truly, she looks much better with some more weight.

I am really curious to see the outcome of this visit.

I think it would have been wiser not to debute this new "bang" at her first engagement, all I read is her hair and clothes.:(

  17. I don't think shirt dresses flatter Kate's figure, so I don't like this dress. So many things look so lovely on her but not, in my opinion, the shirt dress. I also think the haircut is awful, so today is two thumbs down for me. Bangs (or fringe) are meant to be above the eyes. This cut makes it look as if she is growing out her bangs. Beside which I just don't think it adds anything to her look.

  18. The Duchess looked lovely. I'm a fan of the new hairstyle--when you see it (and the dress, too) in the video, it is very flattering. The dress is perfect for the occasion, and it's nice to see a "no coat" ensemble. Looking forward to the fall's engagements.

  19. I think she looked very pretty but the bottom of the shirt dress needed another button. Too much leg for a children's mental health charity (this isn't a glitzy premiere or an evening event) and I agree that it was very expensive given the event.

Her hair is always pretty but I agree that rather than this length fringe she could add some layers to the length or even better, just shorten her hair altogether. I think that this length fringe just hides her face more, which is a shame because she is very pretty.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Loved the dress--classic and conservative with a dash of sass. I'd have liked the sleeves pushed up, I think, though obviously Kate could not unbutton the next button to amp the sass. (And my mom would have whipped out her leveling contraption to "level" that hem--but I've mentioned that many times before. The dip in the back of Kate's dresses/skirts bothers me more than others, I think, because my mother was such a fanatic about level hems.)

I thought the hairstyle was pretty blah--although her hair itself is beautiful--thick, lustrous, shiny--like a shampoo ad.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Lynn,
If you notice the hem is level but Kate's posture is pretty poor, with rounded shoulders and leaning back, causes the hem to dip in the back. This has happened with her a number of times.

      Delete
    2. Lynn has explained this before that her mother was a seamstress and always leveled their hems when she was a kid, especially leveled for how you have your posture etc :)

      Delete
    3. I always assumed that the dip in the back is intentional to compensate for bending over to speak with children but maybe it isn't.

      Delete
    4. I agree that Catherine does not have good posture so looking at hemlines gets difficult, but there is no doubt that you have to go really really high end or custom made these days to get good tailoring on garments including hems. I do not consider most of RL stuff high end any more.

  21. I like the idea of the fringe but unfortunately I think it looks like she just cut a chunk off each side of her hair herself? It looks too heavy and isn't layered in properly.

Dress is cute enough. I'm laughing at some of the gasps of horror on other websites re the "flashing". I think it would be perfectly appropriate for most work places and actually don't find a brief glimpse of thigh on a windy day offensive. If anything I find the dress a bit old for her in terms of how she styled in. Stunned that we didn't see a coat tbh!

And sure enough, there are people from W/K's strata involved in the administrative infrastructure of it all. And that is no doubt why you also heard about it on sky news and in People magazine because of social connections involved. It is an upscale charity with upper crust people at the helm.

I love hounds tooth, but the dress is too large for her. If you look at the dress on the model you can see the dress is lays flat at the waist--no tucks. Also, the arms are too long on Kate's dress. This dress is too expensive not be altered to fit precisely. Minor quibbles, I know. It's wonderful to see her back on the scene.

Everything she heard and saw today seemed pretty new to her.
And I agree she probably knows some key people there from her social circles. Often on a large project like that, the charity will enlist the help of wealthy community people to help negotiate and interface various aspects of the project. I think they know she and William socially or Kate wouldn't be so chummy.

  29. Thanks Charlotte for the fast and informative post. I was excited when I first read that this was a Ralph Lauren dress because I like it very much and also like Ralph Lauren very much. But the Black Label is out of my price range. I really liked the dress today and thik it was an appropriate look for the engagement. As I mentioned in response to an earlier post, some of the pictures are a victim of unfortunate timing for showing leg. It was probably something you wouldn't have even noticed in real life but now they are frozen in time. I was happy to see that she wasn't buttoned up to the top of the collar today either.

The hair was underwhelming because it is the same style as before. Not that much of a change but it looked great in the pictures and I do think it makes her look younger and fresher. She looked great today and really engaged during the visit.

Mental health in childern is such an important field that needs to be supported more and Kate is going to do that with her increased focus in this area. It is so sad seeing what impacts this type of issue has no childern and families. My mom works in this field and most times the facilities are underfunded. I hope she will focus on this area for many years to come.

I have been to the resort in the Bahamas where they filmed the casino scene in Casino Royal and been to Venice and Sienna. I own all the movie DVD's and thought about reading the books. Hello!
I think that, overall Kate looks pretty but I loved the way the dress was styled on the model. I suppose that Kate couldn't style it with booties and opaque tights for this particular engagement because doing so would have been too "sassy", but I would love to see her style this dress like that at some point (not with the additional buttons undone, of course). I also think that, if she'd worn opaque tights, people on other sites may not have seized on the quick moment that her thigh showed...it wouldn't have been as noticeable. That being said, I don't think that there was anything wrong with the amount of leg that she "flashed".
I am not in love with Kate's bangs; something is not quite right. I think that the comments above are right in saying that they look too long and that the hairstyle, overall, lacks the layers necessary to carry off that length of bangs. Maybe she should go for slightly shorter, fuller bangs and more layers? Regardless of this, her hair is just gorgeous! Thick, shiny...gorgeous! All-in-all, Kate looked pretty, happy, healthy and engaged.
Children's mental health is a worthy cause and, I believe, if the proper amount of focus is placed on it, the world will steadily improve. It's cliche, I know, but the children are our future and they need to have a solid foundation.
Thanks for the post, Charlotte! Enjoy the rest of your week, everyone!

  34. I think the issue with her hair isn't just the bangs. I truly have disliked her hair dye over the past couple of years. She used to have a darker more rich hue and this in between reddish brown just doesn't work for her. It ages her completely. She should either bring it back to a darker chestnut shade (think when she was dressed in the ivory McQueen Coat or the grey slip dress with that gorgeous turquoise collar or even her own wedding day) OR add a few highlights to soften the look. That one solid block of hair dye just doesn't look good or natural and I think that, even more so than the bangs, is what is really aging her.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I completely agree with you Liza! I love her hair in the darker, richer color. It suits her coloring more and really brings out her features. I have a feeling the darker color is closer to her natural shade and that is why it looks better than this red/brown color she has going. You are right, the wrong color hair can age a person or take years off of them

      Delete
    2. It is definitely the colo(u)r! It is not good at all and, if I may, looks cheap. I loved the gorgeous chestnut colo(u)r she had during the engagement/wedding time. It was shiny and beautiful. Granted, that was two children ago, but I agree with you that this reddish color is not great.

      Delete
    3. The color is tricky because the photos and lighting may be so different from the in person view. I have no idea
if her natural color is medium or dark brown, but agree if she does not have natural red highlight she should use a non red highlight color, it is tricky because when you highlight you sometimes get red tones when you do it. A really good colorist can work with this. Also she may still be using more natural products which in my experience highlight to more red than the harsher chemicals.

      Delete
  35. I think the bangs could work, but the way they are cut and styled is too harsh, especially on one side of her face, they should be swept away from her face, not curled towards.

    3. Another Crazy in Texas thinks the Duchess is beautiful in this dress. Love houndstooth, and this dress is lined, thus no slip is required. Yes, she shows some leg at times but nothing more than Crown Princess Mary or Queen Maxima. A slip would have shown at the front, and pinning would have possibly pulled the dress in the wrong way. The Duchess had her grunge after Prince George was born and now after Princess Charlotte. Mothers often feel the need to cut their hair. She looks lovely as ever with the new cut, and her hair will grow out enough for the State visit. Catherine is one of the most beautiful women on the planet, at the upcoming State visit, she will not let her country down, count on it. BTW, with winter coming, the Duchess will probably wear black tights which will solve the leg problem.

  38. It's a good cause and hopefully, she CAN bring some awareness to the cause of children's mental health issues and the stigma surrounding mental illness in general. The Duke of Edinburgh's mother, if I recall, spent time in an "asylum" as they were termed back then. And the queen's cousins, Katherine and Nerissa Bowes-Lyon, were developmentally challenged and were committed to an asylum when they were in their late teens/early 20s.
I love to see Kate in Ralph Lauren, his clothing is classic, classy and timeless. I think this dress looked good, it didn't look great. It definitely needed some more buttons at the bottom of the skirt to keep it from blowing open and/or some hem weights.
I wear Lauren and have a couple of his dresses. They tend to be all over the charts when it comes to fit. His models are, as a rule, very tall, very thin and have board-flat figures, which tends to make his clothes, especially dresses and skirts, fit awkwardly on women who have actual shapes.
Kate looks good. She looks healthy and not emaciated like she was post-wedding and pre- and post-George and I hope she stays like this.

I like the dress styled as they have it on the RL website - with the collar flipped a bit, the sleeves pushed up, a bit of a deeper vee in the neckline (another button undone would have done that and still kept some modesty!) and the black hose. Seems like the belt that RL has shown with it is a bit wider, which also makes the dress look more chic. Kate just needed to do a bit of styling, add some buttons to the skirt to keep it closed and it would have been a home run!

  45. Hi, Charlotte,

My thanks, as always, for your speedy and informative post. It's such a pleasure to have "fresh" Kate news so quickly available.

I'm not a fan of the fringe/bangs. I think Kate may need to consider a lighter hand with her eye makeup when she has bangs. The cut/makeup combo is very 1970s (which is back in fashion right now). But I think it ages her.

In these and the Kirk photos, she looks really more like Carole, her Mom, than I've seen her look before. Not a bad thing-Carole is very attractive.

I'm wondering if hormonal problems are causing hair texture/quality issues. Her hair looks much thinner and straighter than pre-Charlotte. If she is still nursing her baby, I wonder if her natural thinness is playing against her health. A woman's body needs a lot of dietary fat to keep up with breastfeeding, especially if the baby is large (notice what a big guy Prince George is for his age so I imagine Charlotte is a healthy, hungry baby too). A woman's body prioritizes fat to milk production and draws it away from the Mom's structures like hair, nails, digestion, etc. which might account for Kate's choice of hairstyle to cover potential hormonal hair problems. I notice that she looks very thin-the waist of the dress was puckering where the belt couldn't be tightened enough-so Kate may just not be someone who can keep on the amount of weight she needs to right now. I also imagine that she cares a great deal about her appearance-not helped by the amount of scrutiny she is under (this includes my own pre/assumptions too) so maybe she isn't wanting to eat too much or as much fat as she should.

I like the dress. It's very "workplace" fashionable. I think Kate likes houndstooth patterns. It reminded me of the outfit she wore to greet the President of Singapore (I think?) and his wife with William.

Great to see her. I would just love it if she has a new or mostly new "sporty" outfit for the rugby appearances.

    Best wishes to all!

    1. Canadian Friend, I'm wondering the same thing about the postpartum hair situation. After I had both of my children, my hair didn't look great for about a year regardless of how well I took care of it and what I did.... it was thin and dull and blah. However, I really don't think that the cut is helping. In addition, I think the color is a bad choice. It's too warm for her skin tone and makes her look really pale. Also, I really wish she would wear SOME color in her makeup. Nothing crazy, but a dusty rose lipstick and some light blusher would just look SO much better. After I got over 30 I realized I had to add a bit more color to my lips and face to look brighter, and especially after functioning on little sleep and with the demands of nursing. This is of course nit-picking. I would kill to have looked like Kate 4 months postpartum!!!!!!

I do like the dress- I don't want to come across as picking on her appearance too much. I'm just trying to put myself in her shoes only 4 months after having a baby, and feeling insecure and still dealing with all the hormones. I just think that whoever is doing her hair needs to be replaced because they aren't doing her any favors, and she needs to have Bobbi Brown do her makeup. The "Bobbi look" would be really great for Kate because it's the "natural beauty" thing which I think she tries to go for. No, I don't work for them. You just can't wear the same makeup for 15 years and expect to look fresh regardless of how naturally pretty you are. :)

  46. Ok, having waded in two posts ago....I am committed to doing more than "lurk" and to post my impressions good and bad. That said, disclaimer here, I don't consider myself terribly fashion minded, so my "take" is not strongly held...so deep breath - I think she looks really good. When I opened this post my initial reaction was she looks happy, well rested, engaged, and sharp. The second picture Charlotte posted in particular is quite stunning. I totally get the different takes on the bangs/no bangs...so all I would say is I welcomed the change and felt her style was getting tired and this seems to brighten her up and bring attention to her lovely eyes...however, I see it not being practical long term - very susceptible to the wind, etc.... The dress is cute and I love houndstooth prints...but really wished we didn't have the "flash the upper leg" thing going on. She's lovely and can pull it off, but knowing the wardrobe malfunction history when I saw it I just sighed and thought "oh no..here we go...!" Just feels to me like it falls in the "Unforced error" department. It truly can be solved, so why not solve it and save yourself the grief. I don't think she intends it...I am not saying she WANTS this...(and yes I realize my comment is in fact "giving her grief" and I don't mean to do that, but I'm trying to just give my honest reactions and when I saw this I just knew it would be mentioned and my reaction to THAT was a fervant wish that steps be taking to avoid the unnecessary distraction in the future). The visit was terrific - its a great cause, she seems totally into it, very engaged, and this is exactly what she can do and do well. I really want to see more like this from her.

    2. I agree with you. I feel bad for her when she gets the negative press surrounding her wardrobe malfunctions. However, she also doesn't seem to be proactively trying to prevent them. I will also give her the credit that in the video of the event, the flash of leg is very short. Of course, this second long flash of leg is what the media is gripping on to.

    3. I really don't see how this can be termed a wardrobe malfunction. I mean her skirt didn't blow up, her undergarments were not exposed. How does a quick peak of the lower thigh become scandalous in this century?

Lindsey - there were actual several different flashes of the leg. The pictures here and video only show one, but pictures from other sites show them clearly from other instances in the same event.

  47. So glad to see her supporting such a worthy cause and returning to her public role in something new. I like the shorter length of hair, but I also feel that the bangs/fringe are not flattering her. A change is refreshing, but this style doesn't seem to be the best way about it. I love seeing her in Ralph Lauren, but prefer this dress on the model. Obviously, Catherine probably didn't see it appropriate to leave it less buttoned for this event. I hope to see her in more RL in the future!

  48. I'm very happy Kate is back! I don't comment to often anymore, but since she's back I think it's time to start again!
I'm soooo happy she is going to focusing on the mental health of children! It is a area that needs special care, especially in the ong run! A Place2Be quote is " It is be easier to fix a child than a broken man." I couldn't agree more! I do wish we could have seen more interaction w the kids, today the event felt short. Even though I was work, and only looking on my Twitter.
This is not my favorite look for Kate. But I'm not hating on it either. I'm not feeling her bangs, she does need to mix it up. Recently I cut 8 inches of my hair and I've been going shorter ever since! So maybe Kate is in transition with her hair!
I can't wait for the next few weeks w her events!
A great post by the way!

    1. congrats on the transition Emily. I had long thick beautiful hair for years and after giving birth started going shoulder length. It took a lot of will power not to cry and be sad for days, lol. It was such a BIG deal to me.

    2. Thanks! I talked about cutting my hair for 3 yrs! I'm glad I finally did! Its not thick like Kate's, or yours. I think I want to do something funky now, like shaving the sides and leaving long on top!
      We'll see!

  49. I like Kate's hair very much when it lies in waves, but it looks pretty odd when it flies in the wind. She does need some blending layers. I am not crazy about the dress. It could fit better and it shows too much thigh when it opens. What is it with Kate and slits?? This is an appropriate style for the event, and probably no one is really aware of the expense until it is published. But the dress is not in Kate's best colors, and it seems oddly awkward in fit, as if she originally intended it to be an early maternity dress. Maybe for Malta?

The attention to the Anna Freud Centre is lovely, and Kate looks very happy and healthy. Thanks, Charlotte, for the history. As Julia says, it seems a fortuitous development given the influx of traumatized refugee children.

A Bond movie called Spectre on October 26. Hmmm. What an opportunity to dress for Halloween! Camilla did that once, not too successfully. Kate will no doubt find the perfect way to look fantastic and ghostly and glittering.

  50. I love Kate and think she looks awesome today. It doesn't matter how she wears her hair, bangs or no bangs, longer or shorter, it always looks great. I like the bangs. It is a nice change for her. Maybe she's just being a Mom and keeping the hair around her face shorter so there is less hair around her face for Princess Charlotte to grab. :o)

I can't wait to see what she wears to the screening of Spectre and, of course, to the dinner in October!

Oh, and someone said something about her ring missing. She wore it today. You can see it in several of the pictures. I just think it spins around sometimes. Also, Charlotte, didn't you post once that the Duchess had been wearing a third band? Was it a gift? Thanks for your post!

  52. In some of the photos I liked her hair, and others not. I wish she would give it a good cut and shape. She has had the same hair style since she came into the public eye over a decade ago. Change is needed! It would look so beautiful at the shoulders with some lift in it.

The dress I liked. It did, however, look better on the model, with the sleeves rolled up. Of course I can understand why she did not prefer that look.

Looking forward to seeing her again!

I thought Kate, as a whole, looked lovely, and it was good to see her out and about again, especially in relation to such an important cause. I LOVE this dress. I think it's elegant, modern, and sophisticated. Sometimes some of her dresses (and coats) come off to me as too "little-girly" or as though the goal is to look pretty or cute, not professional and focused on the event. But in this case, I thought the dress was a perfect balance between stylish and professional. And I love the slightly longer length that covers her knees.

I do think she could have gotten the dress altered so that it was sewn or buttoned more in the front. I'm sure in person the thigh-high exposure wasn't as noticeable, although I notice it with others in shirt dresses all the time, but after 4.5 years, she is well aware she is going to get photographed and that one split second is all it's going to take. In a way, she's almost lucky that she has the new bangs, because if the media weren't so distracted by them, I think the exposure would have been made a bigger deal of. Now in the past, I've criticized Kate for wearing things too short. I've kind of changed my view on that, in that, it's not her fault that whenever women wear short outfits, they are automatically sexualized. Women's bodies are objectified all the time in society, and that's why it's considered "professional" to wear longer clothing. The idea developed as a way to "protect" men from their sexual urges. Why is it that whenever Kate shows leg, everything else she is doing at an event goes by the wayside? I don't mean here, but in general media/discussions. That's not her fault. Women should be able to wear short clothing without it becoming about that. It's only noticed because women's bodies are sexualized. It's the same reason her "new" haircut is getting all of the press, instead of the charity and what she's doing with it.
However, again, Kate is 4.5 years into royal life, and had a long time before her marriage to find out just how it is with having pictures taken of you, etc. So while it's not her fault that men suck (:P), I do think she could just be smarter about it and not show so much leg at an event where people think it would be inappropriate to do so. And I think she could do a better job of giving the media something else to talk about - i.e. a speech or something would make people no longer care about the bangs. I don't mean that as criticism. Just discussing PR tactics. Because realistically, most of the articles on this event became about her and PR for her, not the cause.

As for the bangs, I agree with everyone saying that they aren't blended in enough. I wish she would go with the bangs her mother has. Instead of having them on both sides of her face, she could have the same side bangs (as people in the US call it). They would also need to be shorter, like her mom's. Then they wouldn't get in her eyes. I think she looks good with the length, minus the chunkiness and lack of blending, but even if they fixed the blending, I think she still needs to go shorter. She's not in college where it's cute to have long bangs that cover up your eyes. She's a working royal who is expected to act and appear professional. I just don't think long bangs that get into your eyes achieve that. And given that her hair issue has always been that it tends to get in her face and/or be flying everywhere and/or get played with, I don't know why she thought long bangs were the solution. They seem to be the perfect way to make all of her hair issues at engagements worse haha.

But, like I said, I thought Kate looked lovely overall. And it was nice to see her after so long. I really, really hope she gives a speech at a mental health-related engagement before the year ends. That would be a great way to show some support.

Oh also dear gawd can someone please tell Kate to stop constantly holding her purse with both hands in front of her stomach. Not only is it ruining her posture, it makes her look so odd when walking. This is not really actually a big deal, just something that bugs me every time and for some reason this time I really felt like saying something about it :P Maybe it's a way to get herself to stop playing with her hair, so I can sympathize with that, but they need to find something else for her to do with her hands.

  56. I love silk shirt dresses, and this one is beautiful. I think it flatters Kate well, even if the fit could have been more exact around the waist. (But shame on Mr Lauren for promoting the use of rail-thin models.) I also really like the haircut. I know I'm in a minority here, but for me it does make her look more youthful. The difference of opinion on this subject reminds me of optical illusion pictures in which one person sees an old woman and one person sees a young one. I wonder if so many people are seeing her as being aged because perhaps she IS aging faster than we expect? She definitely has age lines on her forehead and around the eyes, and to my mind that's not a bad thing. But then I've always been in a tiny minority who has no problem with aging and in fact thinks it's on the whole a positive thing.

  57. It's time to stop blaming the photographers for Kate's repeated wardrobe malfunctions.
She's not a 20something new royal girlfriend (and, in fact, she seemed to avoid all these issues when she WAS only William's girlfriend!). She "gets" how this all goes. She knows enough about clothes to know that a silk skirt could, possibly, catch a gust of wind. She has access to the best tailors and couturiers in the world to make sure that it doesn't flip up.
Time to start taking things like wind and light skirts and such into consideration and planning accordingly.

  60. I thought Kate looked great today and far more like the Kate of old. Clearly confident and happy engaging well with everyone and bringing much needed publicity to a very important cause. I wish she had kept a little more weight on as I think it makes her look younger but she looked very fit and well.
Let us hope it won't be too long before she increases her public engagements to a reasonable level.

  61. Well done Kate, this area of children's mental health is so needed in many of our countries. I can't imagine what many of the children in the Middle East are going through. Life's pressures affect us all and how wonderful to have the support and help.
I love the dress! Very professional looking. One more button on the bottom would have helped or a safety pin hahaha.
A tiny bit shorter on the bangs would look great IMHO but, they grow out anyways. Kate looks lovely.

Could have been from the charitual end or any number of issues. She has two young children as well.

Let's not start a new thread about her "being late to events because she is indifferent." You know it will head that direction and I for one am weary of the digging by many here to find a way to pick on Kate.

So, it matters not IMHO. The event was a success!

I had not noticed the no bouquet. Wonder if she got one and it was not captured in photos or just not done, for whatever reason. Great observation. Ali

    6. Then she should have left earlier. Commuting in London is a nightmare, everyone knows this, so we Londoners give ourselves extra time to get to work. We cannot use traffic problems as an excuse to be late for work and neither should she.

      Delete
    7. Yes, I think it does matter. She does so few engagements that these details stick out. She was the guest of her child's godmother's family, she flashed skin, and she was late. These are facts about her appearance. I'm sure she'll be on time for tomorrow's rugby thingamajig, because that will go off whether she is there or not. I'm pretty sure royals are not late for "traffic" problems - especially since they are escorted around town with police officers. And Kate makes her own schedule - so one assumes she knows what the baby's feeding schedule is to make plans.

  63. Houndstooth, classic. Charity, meaningful and more. Fringe, can't wait to see what Catherine does with it in a more formal style. Katie Holmes wore clip in fringe and had me fooled. Perhaps Catherine's hair stylist will suggest that to her next time the urge for fringe occurs? Overall a very beautiful look for The Duchess.

  64. Thank you Charlotte for this post so quickly!

The bad (get it out the way): The slit. Not appropriate for today's occasion. I wish she would learn to dress properly. She is 33 and has been doing this for 4 1/2 years. It's like she reads everyone's comments about dressing improperly and says "Challenge accepted" and does it anyway.

The good: The dress is still gorgeous on her! I like the slightly loose fit. I think she looks in GREAT shape, strong, healthy and no not too thin at all! She looks very well. And, I may be the minority, but I like her hair! I think it was best during the 2010 engagement, but I do like this fringe.
She asked pertinent questions and seemed engaged and genuine. She stayed for 2 hours total, which is twice as long as she usually does. Many improvements! I am happy with today.

  67. Kate has a beautiful face and a perfect profile. With her lovely high forehead she does not need a fringe, or bangs of any kind. Like Mary she looks her best with a half-up kind of style, pulled away from her face. I was starting to really like her hair styles pre-birth of Charlotte, the cute little half twists, and intricate loops were fun and really lovely. This look dates her. I hope she decides soon on what HER real style identity is. That said, I love the DOC and her work with the children, it is good to see her doing what she does best.

  69. It seems some like her bangs and others don’t. It is a matter of personal taste.
    1. Over all, the change is good.
    2. She is also getting premature forehead wrinkles; the bangs sort of distract observers from focusing on her entire forehead. I like the way it changed the shape of her face, and there by the variation of her smile. Poor girl, such scrutiny. I am amazed at my own self as well.
    3. She looks like she is in a different place in her life. Well the taste of settling down, own family, life experience all that rolling, she seems to come through in a healthy state.

Strange, while she is at Anna Freud’s center, her dress somehow recalls Anna’s father, Sigmund Freud.

Seeing so many comments about her age. But, she is 33, not 53, or 63. She should enjoy her youth, it will pass soon enough, and then she can dress in a more age appropriate way. She is still a very beautiful young woman. Just saying.
