UPDATED: Kate in Seraphine for Day of Engagements in Kensington!

It was a busy day for the Duchess of Cambridge who carried out three engagements in Kensington.

Following a relaxing weekend in Bucklebury with Prince George and the Middletons, Kate, who is about six months pregnant, looked refreshed and was all smiles as she arrived for the first engagement of the day - a coffee morning at Family Friends, a voluntary organisation providing befriending and mentoring services to families in deprived areas of the borough.

Kate received a warm welcome from "excited" members of the organisation.

The Duchess was given an overview of the organisation's work before meeting some of the network of trained volunteers and families.

Those from the Kensington area will more than likely be somewhat familiar with the work of Family Friends. Established as a charity in 1993 to support families-in-need living in disadvantaged areas of Kensington & Chelsea, and now also Hammersmith & Fulham. Through a network of trained volunteers, the organisation offers two services – Child Befriending and Mentoring and Parent Befriending.

Family Friends

Its aim is to ‘help families to help themselves’ through building confidence in parenting and parent/child relationships, improving access to health and community services, reducing isolation, planning for economic improvements, introducing greater stability into children’s lives, giving academic support to children and building aspirations. Volunteers are crucial to the success and longevity of the services and they do a splendid job with tireless commitment and dedication.

Family Friends have assisted over 700 families to date, with over 95% reporting improvements as a result of using the service. In 2013, Family Friends won The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. If you wish to donate or find out more please click here.

Family Friends

A spokesperson for the charity said: "As a small, nice charity providing a vital service in deprived areas of West London, a Royal visit is a huge visit". It is hoped today's visit will increase awareness and encourage more people to volunteer.

Family Friends

There was a particularly adorable moment when Kate met a shy toddler.

More from The Telegraph's story which includes a great video:

'He had spent all weekend practising for his big moment presenting a bouquet to the Duchess of Cambridge, but when two-year-old Ryan Dixon came face to face with the Royal guest, he had a sudden attack of shyness.
The normally boisterous toddler took one look at the Duchess, said “no no, Mummy, no Mummy,” and did his best to run away.
The Duchess laughed off the rare snub, telling Ryan: “I would be shy as well.”

It was left to Ryan's mother, Tracy Samuels, to present Kate with the bouquet :)

Another interesting quote from Kate from the Express:

'It's moving all the time. I can feel it kicking now," she told Martina McDonagh, 17,'

For the second engagement of the day, Kate formally opened Kensington Aldridge Academy.

Her Royal Highness met governors, staff and students, toured the new building and watched part of a lesson.

The Duchess then watched a dance performance in the school's theatre, and unveiled a plaque.

Kate also visited the school's Creates Hub for young entrepreneurs, and met students who are designing items for sale at Portobello Road Market.

Interestingly, William and Kate opened another Aldridge Academy in Darwen back in 2011. It was their final joint engagement before the royal wedding. Readers will recall Kate wore a navy Amanda Wakeley suit.

The Academy is a new school for pupils aged 11 to 18, situated in the heart of North Kensington. The new academy is a local school serving the North Kensington community, with all of its students living less than a mile away. Before the academy opened many students from North Kensington had to travel outside the Royal Borough to complete their secondary education. A first-class cirriculum will be delivered with a specialism in creative and performing arts.

Kensington Aldridge Academy

Finally, the Duchess walked across the site from the academy to formally open Kensington Leisure Centre, a new development which replaces the former building where Princes William and Harry had swimming lessons at school.

Kate toured the facilities, including the swimming pool, gym and sauna and watch groups of children from nearby primary schools in the Main Sports Hall playing various sports.

The Duchess also attended a reception in the dance studio and heard speeches before unveiling a plaque.

It was an ideal engagement for keen sportswoman Kate.

Among the many facilities available at the leisure centre are a 25-metre, eight-lane swimming pool for teaching and swimming at all levels; 250-seat spectator gallery; 20-metre teaching pool with mobile floor; 120-station gym; eight-court multi-use hall; two fitness studios and sauna/steam facilities with treatment rooms.

The Duchess was presented with an inflatable duck for Prince George along with an embroidered kit bag.

Kate appeared to have a wonderful time interacting with everyone she met.

The Duchess debuted a gorgeous new blue coat by her go-to maternity brand Seraphine. It's amazing how distinctive the brand's designs are (or perhaps how one can instantly recognise a maternity wear garment) the moment I saw it I thought it must be a Seraphine piece.

Kate wore the brand's £195 Natasha Cashmere Blend Coat (with thanks to Monique) The soft mist-blue garment features mother of pearl buttons, an understated collarless style, a sleek straight cut and stylish faux pockets. It is described as "an elegant addition to your wardrobe for before, during and after pregnancy".

Seraphine

Underneath, Kate wore Seraphine's 'Florrie' Floral Printed Dress. The £99 dress comes in "stunning marine ocean shades" and is made in soft woven fabric. Both the coat and dress are part of the brand's Spring/Summer 2015 Collection. They will be available for pre-ordering soon.

Seraphine
The Duchess teamed the outfit with her Alexander McQueen pumps.

Kate carried her Stuart Weitzman for Russell and Bromley Muse clutch. The bag is known as the 'Raz' in the US and is available in a number of colours at 6 p.m. Zappos and Nordstrom.

HRH accessorised with her Cartier Ballon Bleu watch.

And completed the look with her green amethyst cushion cut Kiki McDonough earrings.

Kiki McDonough

It is arguably Kate's best look from the past week with her previous choices proving a little hit and miss. One imagines it can be difficult to select comfortable and stylish clothing for a changing figure, which is why maternity wear is an excellent option for the Duchess. Thus far, her Seraphine choices have all been popular ones.

You can view videos at ITN Source and YouTube.

There are currently no future engagements announced for Kate's diary, however, that is very much subject to change. It is thought Kate and Prince George will join the Middleton family for their annual holiday in Mustique, where Carole Middleton's 60th birthday will be celebrated. It is not yet known if Prince William - who is studying and undertaking exams - will accompany them. Two reliable reporters have suggested he will not.

Ok, in my eyes she looks so perfect today. I love the flow of both the garments! That coat looks sooooooo cozy! And it looks beautiful around her stomach. And that dress flows beautifully! I love the length and combination. So glad she is wearing maternity clothing.

What a great cause she visited in the morning. She seemed to listen really intently. I hope we might get some video from there. Can't wait for the rest of the day! :)

Thank you Charlotte as always for you swift and deep reporting!

  2. Great choice, Kate! I love how the coat fits her and i adore this baby blue color (perhaps it stays for the baby’s gender???) I didn’t like Kate’s latest sartorial choices but today i can say her signature look is back!
Even if i love her glossy rolls i like how this straighten hair look..
During her pregnancy with George her sartorial choices where amazing, better than now, but she’s improving..
I like that Kate is having more duties during this January before her visit to mustique.. Last year was totally a bad move (less engagements, two vacations..) Even being a royal is a work!

Haha, they say they don't want to find out the gender beforehand. Kate's last engagement before George she wore a really baby-pink coat. So I think she either just likes the garments or maybe also likes to toy with us a little :P

I think this coat/dress ensemble is great too. She should stick with Seraphine for the rest of her pregnancy. Their pieces fit her well in all the right places and are so pretty. She hasn't looked this good since she arrived in NYC in their plum coat.

  3. Kate looks very beautiful today. I love that she switched it up and wore some color. It really brightens her up.
Love this look today. Coat was appropriate length as well as the dress underneath.
I'm glad she's wearing a maternity coat and dress.

And finally she took her coat off while she was at the engagement! Now it doesn't look like she was in a rush to leave and kept it on.

    2. She normally doesn't take her coat off even on long engagements. She left it on for the second one though.

    3. She tends to run cold -- that is, she feels chilly more easily than most people, that's why she wears a lot of coats and often keeps them on. I have this from a pretty likely source, but it was just a one- off encounter; there won't be on-going bits of info like that, alas. ;-) I think most women feel warmer during pregnancy though. Maybe that's why she actually took it off today.

    5. Anon 21.20, I'm not sure I agree that she feels chilly more easily. We've seen her arrive at quite a few engagements in a dress and no coat. I think it has more to do with how her outfit is intended to be worn on any given day (and how warm the coat is). A lighter coat may be kept on during an engagement, for example.

  4. Finally Kate got it right! She looks great. I'm thinking she got the idea to pair these two together from the website. The model on seraphine's site modeling the blue cashmere coat is wearing the blue and green dress under it. These are stock photos taken before today. That may be where Kate got her inspiration. Thank goodness for that because she looks beautiful today. Good job pairing from seraphine, all the credit to them:)

    1. I'm glad she paired the coat and dress with her navy pumps instead of the black ones worn by the model. I thought the navy accessories were the right touch for the outfit. Loved the outfit! The coat was gorgeous and the dress beautiful! I loved the colors in the dress! They looked great with Kate's hair. I hope we see her again soon!

  6. Hi everyone! I've been following this blog for quite a while now (the only one I follow, thank you Charlotte for the amazing work!) but haven't yet commented. I always read every comment and I feel like I know so much about some of the "regulars", and I decided to gather the courage to join in myself :) It's such a great site and the conversation is always so interesting and thought-provoking.

Moving on to today - Kate looks gorgeous! I love the coat, blue suits her nicely, and I think she looks much better, somehow more fresh, than the model with black stockings. And I love it when her engagement ring really suits her outfit.

I found the outfits of thursday and friday ok, but pretty ordinary and maybe even dull. Not that it's always about the dress, these are all great causes and I'm so glad she's bringing them some well-deserved attention. I also believe she wants to focus the attention on the cause by dressing "dully" but appropriately, as some have said. But it's so nice to see her wearing some color, it brightens her up so much! Today she truly looks like a princess.

Now in eevery way, this is what I love to see about the duchess. A new an important area to be branching out in, bringing attention to something most of us don't think about. Getting involved with encouraging mentoring. And pointing out there is another side of Kensington than the palace.

And looking both fabulous and princess-like. She really looked radiant today and both coat and dress fitted her pefectly. Wish the coat had been cut a bit longer so we didn't see the dress peaking underneath but it's such an elegant shape for pregnancy and those colours so good on her -- she really rocks in blue as always - that I don't mind. And that length really works on her. It's a very springtime look -- nice for those she was visiting.

Paola, if you are reading, I'll give the fictional analogy some thought!

By the way, Leo, I believe you mentioned that you will visit the 9/11 museum this year (?). I made the trip recently and it exceeded my expectations! They did an excellent job!! Hi Royalfan, realise we have another post now but didn't get back here immediately. Yes, we will be in NYC in April and it will be my first visit to the museum. Won't say I'm looking forward to it, that feels wrong but I think it will be a powerful experience. (Can't see myself bright colours there -- but no worry as I mostly wear black anyway.) I have the book the New York Times put out about all those killed -- it makes for very difficult reading -- so many ordinary lives cut short. Almost unbearable. My mum and I used to travel to NYC quite often but she's gone now and so are our relatives there, so will be my first visit in some years. Wondering if I'll find it much changed.

  17. Agreed, Charlotte! Arguably her best look as of late. Even better than Christmas Day, in my opinion :-) I am also surprised, but happy, that she took her coat off! So often she walks around with her jacket on, even indoors.

I think maternity wear is easy to spot thanks to the popularity of empire waists and baby bumps. I'm glad she is embracing maternity wear, as it is very fashionable these days, and I think it also translates better for official engagements.

In regards to William and Mustique...I will be disappointed if he doesn't go two years in a row. I understand he has been working the past two January's, but family vacations are so very important for the family and the marriage. I am also very confused as to why he has been studying and taking exams for months & months on end (it seems). I understand he has also had the odd sprinkling of royal duties, but he is a trained and highly skilled helicopter pilot already. Sometimes I feel this story of being so busy training and studying is more of a cover to allow the Cambridges more private downtime. There, I said it. While I don't think it makes William lazy, I think they're trying to hide and enjoy life with minimal demands, while they can get away with it.

    2. Here's an analogy: my sister is a licensed veterinary surgeon, but when she moved to a state that did not have an agreement with her original licensing state, she had to retake all the board exams. It took her a year to study up on all the different areas that would be covered in the exams. William is probably facing the same kind of challenge--he knows the material, but not in the detail that is necessary to pass all the exams to his and the board's satisfaction.

  25. I think Kate looks great today - finally an outfit appropriate for a young, pregnant Duchess! I would be very surprised if William does not make it down to Mustique for at least part of the time to celebrate Carole's birthday. There's been very little said about when he is supposed to be starting this new job. He's had very little to do the past almost 2 years while Harry is really been shining...just my opinion.

  26. About William's training - I believe it is a requirement that an air ambulance pilot qualifies as an EMT (emergency medical technician) in order to assist the more highly qualified paramedic if required. This training takes a few months and does involve exams, coursework and asessments.

Today was a wonderful look for Kate--and a great day for the charities she showcased. I've loved every Seraphine outfit--last pregnancy, post-pregnancy and this time, too! I'm thinking of purchasing a couple of dresses myself--and at 68, I assure you I am not pregnant!!!!--nor am I overweight. However, the styles look so comfortable and attractive--roomy without being baggie and shapeless for us older ladies whose waists begin to lose some definition even if we aren't fat.

The coat is pretty and soft, and looks amazing against the sea of flags. I'm glad she wore it for warmth outdoors and removed it inside. Note that eyeliner is softer, no tattoos!

Now that I can see both thumbnails, I do think they were damaged by HG. Kate's beautiful hair in the sunshine also shows many short hairs, probably regrowth from hair loss when she was so ill.

  42. Oh!! The colour really matters! My first thought when I saw the photos was "Wow! Kate look radiant today". I think baby blue with a bit of green from the dress (as much as we are allowed to see it underneath) brightened her look up so perfectly. The navy blue she wore last week looked a bit baggy and the brown one looked dull.
Maybe it's her colour choice that completely changes her look. Moreover, I think she has been right choosing to wear maternity clothes today, given that both the dress and coat fit her much better than the previous two dresses from last week. I remember that during her NYC trip, she did mix and match some Seraphine pieces and normal clothes, which I'm not sure how normal clothes would work on her at this point of her pregnancy. It's her second one now and maybe she looks a bit bigger due to that.

So Kudos to Kate for bringing more attention to such an important cause today and also to Seraphine team. The combination is fabulous and very flattering.

I do expect to see more engagements in the upcoming weeks before she leaves for annual holiday. I don't think they will repeat the false twice - no engagements and holidays like last year-.

There´s a lengthy video on ITN (google "itn news royal") of this morning´s visit to "Family and friends" which is quite lovely. You can see the Duchess listening very intently and compassionately...
Perfect outfit - she just looks great in this colour (I still admire that coat she wore in Australia on Easter Sunday!!). Elegant, yet comfortable, great.... I didn´t like last week´s outfit choices at all - especially the brown dress. The structure of the fabric made it look like a rhinocero´s skin... very odd indeed!
Yes, I truly love brighter colours on her - she´s definitely someone who can wear it! Bravo!

  45. This is a runaway hit! While contrary to popular opinion ...I quite liked last weeks Madderson and was "ok" with the Hobbs shirt dress...This blows both of those away. In particular I love seeing the Duchess in a pattern...and such a beautiful one. Fresh, elegant...spring like (even if spring is still a few months away....). Loved it!

Laura in Canada--you and I might be the only ones who liked the Madderson dress and did not actively dislike the Hobbs! I actually like the Hobbs too, but not for this stage of pregnancy. Today's outfit was very beautiful on the Duchess.

Today's visits continue a pattern of calling attention to important things which I greatly appreciate, with kudos especially to Charlotte for providing us with an excellent level of detail about these causes. I expect Kate will now disappear until somebody photographs the Middletons on holiday. But that is perfectly okay with me! I think she fits into the pattern of this royal family very well and will probably do her best to continue to improve its image overall.

This was so much better than the past two engagements! Kate looked lovely today. I hope she sticks with this look for the remaining month of her pregnancy.

Charlotte, do you think one of the last public appearances will be on St Patrick's Day?

I thought Kate looked lovely today. Following Eve from Germany's recommendation, I watched the ITN footage of the visit. Very enjoyable. Since I am in bed with the flu I gave myself something to look forward to---I bought the Lolita earrings that Kate wore the other day and a little something else, too.

Kate was on today! You could tell she felt great!
Loved the dress so much! I'm pregnant and would love to get it; wonder when it will be in stock?

The coat was a wonderful fit. . . but the colour a little light for her (also a cool tone whereas Kate has warm tones). Notice how you first see the coat, and then her face. But when looking at pics of her in the dress, you notice her face first. That's a sign of choosing the right colour. You should be wearing the colour, not the colour wearing you.

Also loved the nude hose and compementary pumps. That what's would have added measures of strength to her previous two outfits! While I know black with navy/brown is acceptable. . .it is still jarring to the eyes, and always makes one have a temporary eye-lock to ascertain colours versus a smooth gaze.

Still swooning over today's dress. . . hope I can get it for my second pregnancy as well:)

    1. Great color analysis, Sara. In some of the outdoor pictures, the coat looks slightly aqua, and it is much more flattering to Kate that way. I like the fussy pattern of the dress less, but it does bring out Kate's eye color.

  53. This was simply perfect! I love her hair a straighter style, I think it is more classy. The coat and the dress are on point! I hope we can see kate and george arriving on the airplane to go on their annual holiday!

Does anyone have any ideas on the sex of the baby? I want to say boy since she said it's been moving a lot, but I'm wishing for a girl!!

  54. Hi, Charlotte,

I can always count on you to come through with the speedy posting when it's an exciting day for Kate fans! Thank you!

This is just a perfect look! I love the colours, especially in the dress print. The ensemble looks very wearable (from a comfort standpoint) as well as elegant.

A few interesting points for comment- Seraphine styled their catalogue using black hose with both the dress and coat.
Is the colour black in hose/tights more commonly worn as a neutral in the U.K.? That may explain Kate's wearing of black hose over the last few appearances.

Could wearing black hose be seen as more common in the U.K. because girls often wear black tights if they have to wear school uniforms? What do you think, Charlotte?

Black is worn often as a hosiery colour in Canada, especially during the colder months. It may not be worn as much in the U.S. where there are places that stay warm most/all of the year so the colour black may be seen as too heavy.

Still-today proves (as we already knew) that Kate owns navy blue pumps and a navy blue clutch and has them close at hand-Gosh, I wish she had worn them with that blue shift dress last week! I think it would have made a huge difference to how many of us felt about that dress.

Does anyone else wonder if William doesn't go to Mustique in order to support the "need" for another warm getaway for just the two of them? That happened last year but may not be possible this year because of Kate's spring due date which might make more flying in Feb./March/April impractical. Two trips for both of them might draw too much negative press.

Wow-this pregnancy is going fast! I know many folks are thinking the new baby is a girl but I tend to think it may be another boy...just hope he/she is healthy.

    Have a great week, everyone!

    2. CF, I agree that navy accessories would have looked better with the navy dress. The dress itself had a softer, more playful look to it and I thought the black tights and shoes looked too harsh with it.

Regarding Mustique, I'm with Jean on this one. I don't see anything wrong with them spending one week on vacation with her family.

Kate is wearing maternity clothes! Yaay! Overall, love this look. If someone showed me her dress separately, I would hate the pattern, but I really like it on Kate. Not something I would expect, but goes to show that I don't know everything, despite sometimes liking to pretend otherwise :). Anyways, this was a hit for Kate.

  56. Charlotte, I have a question for you. Do you really think the Duchess does not know the sex of her baby, or is she just saying that to protect her and her husband? I feel as if she said she knew, people would constantly ask her what she is having and she would give in. Just a thought. And thank you for a lovely post! You are SOOO fast when it comes to this blog!

  62. This coat and dress are perfection, although the coat hem seems a bit too short for the dress. Kate looks great. I wondered if she would chance a long flight to Mustique at this time but it appears her doctors have no qualms. Kate and William seem to have a confident, trusting relationship within a modern marriage; and it signifies nothing that he skips the big Middleton family holiday.

  66. I have been thinking a lot about this issue with Catherine and her clothes, etc. I think that Catherine is more about the substance of her work than about her clothes. Don't forget, unlike Diana, Catherine got past her early "clothes horse" days before she actually married William. Granted Diana always liked clothes but I don't think Catherine is as fashionable as Diana was. And I don't think she sees herself--or wants to be seen as--a fashion icon. I think she wants to be seen as a caring, warm, person who loves her family. As her husband isn't yet the "next-in-line" she is freer than Diana was to be her own person within the Royal Family. There are plenty of royals out there for events, garden parties, etc., who clearly enjoy it and have the time for it now. Anne, Sophie, Camilla (whether you like her or not she IS the next Queen Consort.) So what if Catherine doesn't want center stage right now? I think it's rather nice that she defers to Anne and Sophie on the engagements front because once Charles becomes King they are going to be shunted to the side I think.

    1. "more about the substance of her work"

Unless you think that these appearances are the substance of her work, could you explain please? My opinion is that she does appearances that bring awareness to the organizations she visits. That's a good thing, but I don't see much substance to the work there.

  72. I agree with everyone else that Kate looked very nice today, although it almost seems like springtime outfit. It looks "Easter-y" to me. In my opinion, the coat and dress would have looked better with black tights, as shown in the photos. It is winter, after. I was one of the few who liked the brown shirtdress she wore last week. And I also like this combination. I don't know that I'd call it perfection, but it's understated and feminine. I specially like the green/blue floral dress.... very pretty!

  83. Does it strike anyone else as strange that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge chose to spend extra days in Mustique rather than attending the ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz? Their presence at the ceremony marking the 70th anniversary of Normandy was powerful. Had they wanted, they surely could have arranged to be both at this ceremony and in Mustique for Mrs. Middleton's birthday (other European royals are attending). I wonder why not and whether they think marking the liberation is less important than marking D-day.
