The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Touch Down in the Big Apple & Kate in Beulah London for Dinner

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge touched down at JFK airport in New York this evening, marking the beginning of a three-day trip during which they are expected to take the US by storm.

The couple arrived at The Carlyle in a motorcade and were greeted with a warm welcome. Very unusually they turned to pose for pool photographers who had travelled over from London to cover the trip.

Excitement has reached fever pitch among royal fans in New York over the past number of days. The UK ambassador to the US Peter Westmacott said, "The Duke and Duchess have captured the hearts and minds of people around the world." This is very much evident in the US where the couple receive enormous media coverage. Indeed, the Duchess is already the fourth most featured person to grace the cover of People - the USA's largest magazine. Reporter Simon Perry revealed, "She's been on the cover 26 times, more than any US celebrity apart from Brad Pitt."

It's a very exciting trip for William and Kate, too. It is the first time either of them has visited New York City. A spokesperson for the couple said they were both looking forward to it "immensely". As parents, it will be one of only a handful of times they have been away from Prince George; given the busy itinerary and brevity of their stay it was decided he would stay in Bucklebury with his grandparents.

The trip will see a variety of engagements including a stop at the White House where Prince William will meet with President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden, underscoring the special relationship between Britain and America. However, there will be no time for sightseeing, despite reports to the contrary, as the Cambridges are catching a scheduled flight back to London on Tuesday night, immediately after a gala dinner to raise money for their university St Andrews.

The Duke and Duchess were accompanied by an entourage of eight: William and Kate's private secretaries Miguel Head and Rebecca Deacon, two press officers, a special adviser, PA, Kate's hair dresser Amanda Cook Tucker and a UK policeman.

Our go-to royal photographer James Whatling shared a photo from The Carlyle just before the royal arrival.

The prestigious Carlyle Hotel became known as "The New York White House" during the administration of President John F. Kennedy who owned an apartment on the 34th floor for the last ten years of his life. It's long played host to royals including Princess Diana, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. Below we see the late Princess leaving The Carlyle in December 1995, almost exactly nineteen years ago.

CBC news video journalist Steve D'Souza shared photos of fans outside the hotel via Twitter. Two people in this photo drove all the way from Idaho to see William and Kate.

According to one onlooker Ashley Marie people were "shoving, pushing and freezing". A little overexcited perhaps?

The Duchess wrapped up in a stylish bespoke coat by her go-to maternity brand Seraphine. The maroon and black tweed garment is called the 'Marina' (with thanks to the wonderful What Kate Wore who shared the image and info via Twitter).

It's interesting to see Kate selecting a maternity style at this stage in her pregnancy, as during her first pregnancy she had pieces she already owned altered and bespoke garments made. It was an excellent choice for the arrival and another gorgeous coat to add to her collection. The Duchess wore a fitted black dress underneath.

The Duchess ordered several pieces from the brand to see her through her first pregnancy and the months that followed in style. Séraphine founder Cecile Reinaud discussed her delight upon discovering Kate was a fan last year: "The Kate effect is huge and we have been enjoying a 400% growth in sales since it became public that Kate bought Séraphine dresses back in April 2013". Below we see HRH in the £46 fuchsia Jolene Dress for the first official portrait of Prince George taken by Michael Middleton.

Kate wore black suede booties she's had for several years.

Kate wore striking diamond earrings we've seen many times before. They were a wedding gift from Prince Charles.

The Duchess carried her black Russell & Bromley Muse clutch and Cornelia James black gloves

Following a quick change, Their Royal Highnesses left the hotel for a private dinner for American friends of The Royal Foundation hosted by long-term supporter Sir Martin Sorrell, the chief executive of the WPP advertising group.

Also in attendance were supporters of The Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry.

The private event is expected to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds for the charitable foundation. A select number of hedge fund managers and financiers were invited to dine, beginning with cocktails, followed by dinner an hour later. Despite rumours no one has been charged for the event, however it is expected that those present will donate generously.

William and Kate reportedly stayed at the event until 10.30 p.m. and were all smiles as they left.

The Duchess looked radiant in the black fit and flare Amara dress by Beulah London from the SS15 Collection. The classic staple dress is described as "a flattering, feminine silhouette made from intricate lace will make the perfect outfit for every occasion". It is available to pre-order for £650 on the website.

Kate selected her Stuart Weitzman Power Pumps for tonight's look.

The Duchess carried her Mulberry clutch.

And completed the look with stunning statement earrings.

What do you think of Kate's looks in New York thus far?

Also today, Kate will not be attending a reception at the Empire State Building. Despite conflicting reports, it seems she was never slated to attend this one.

Speaking of the Empire State Building, it sparkled in red, white and blue to welcome the royals.

A photo of Kate arriving for a meeting and reception for patronage The 1851 Trust was published in the Sunday Express. The Duchess wore the Alexander McQueen Flared Wool Coat from Remembrance Sunday. It can be viewed on the My Small Obsessions Facebook Page.

Tomorrow is a busy day for the couple. William will travel to Washington DC while Kate will join New York's First Lady Chirlane McCray to vist a child development center. In the evening, the couple will attend an NBA game!

  1. They look great! Love Kate's coat -- she has so many beautiful coats! So happy to see them in the US. Surprised at a new pair of booties, I could have sworn she was wearing knee high boots on the CNN coverage. I thought for sure she'd be wearing the Aquatalia's. Bummer on her cancellation of the Empire State Building (one less spot we get to see her).

Did anyone else find it intensely weird that the guy who greeted them at the Carlyle hotel bent at the waist when he bowed to Kate? Awkward! Dude, you only need to bow at the neck -- that whole body bow was creepy!

Haha, I reacted on the full body bow as well :P Looked like he was overdoing it. But maybe he is a super-traditional guy or something.. I guess he is the owner or something of the hotel so he probably isn't unfamiliar with similar situations, but it looked silly :P

    2. I think the booties are Aquatalia. I have a pair exactly like them, but in a dark brown, that I purchased last year.

    3. It could be a culture thing in him as well. He may not even be an American by culture or had taken the custom of his job. I think the Japanese and some other culture bow from the waist not just for royalty only. It was also him who pointed W&K towards the pool of photographers for the photo op. It seems he represented the Hotel and hospitality culture can be a universal matter depending who interprets what. He seemed genuine, confident and did it beautifully.

I agree that he seemed genuine though.

    7. The statements from "Anonymous" -Dec. 8 and Rebecca goes to show how several people can witness the SAME event and come away with different interpretations. I saw it the way Rebecca saw it. The guy was seriously trying to get Catherine inside, while William pulled her coat from the back in order to get her to face the Press. {not meaning to sound negative towards "Anonymous"}

I am looking forward to this mini royal tour. It was great to see the excitement of their arrival in NYC. I am so happy they had a safe trip and wish them all the best for their tour. I love to coat that she arrived in. Congrats Charlotte for this speedy post. Thank you and get some rest. Looking forward to more tomorrow or maybe later tonight. Once again Many thanks Charlotte.

  5. I laughed so hard when I read what Ashley posted on twitter about the catfight. Lol. We're all Kate fans but damn there's no need to fight over a pic.
I thought Kate looked lovely and warm. I like that she's embracing more maternity styles and not having regular clothes altered to fit her body. It looks better. Also her bump is getting bigger :) looks like she's showing a lot faster the second time around, and getting bigger. Which is probably why she's wearing maternity pieces sooner.
Can't wait for more posts Charlotte!! Keep up the good work!!!!

  10. Lovely coat...the dress underneath is short. The coat is short..she is doing maternity short above the knee again. Too long hair..needs to be styled professionally up..but she will never do it. I'm done waiting for her to adopt the clothing of a professional adult. The combination of short dresses and long hair is not a good one.

I think, since her legs don't seem to catch as much water than the rest of her body, she seems to want to counterbalance getting bigger. Showing of her slimmer parts at the moment. It's not like she's indecent. Especially not with black stockings :P

      Delete
    2. I thought the same thing. She's back to the style she had when pregnant the first time. Too short coats and dresses and high heels. There's nothing sophisticated looking about that. I also thought her dress she wore to the private dinner was way too short and girly looking. It was better suited for someone in their 20's. I have also given up on Kate dressing age appropriately.

      Delete
    3. I could not disagree with you more !!!!! She looks young...current....yet elegant ...absolutely SPOT ON for
being in NYC. What is age appropriate!!! You are old if you use those terms.
      Love everything she wears.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous 1:44, I couldn't agree more: What is age appropriate!!! You are old if you use those terms.

Absolutely. Well said. There is nothing too short or too unsophisticated or anything about the coat & dress ensemble or the LBD for dinner.

      Delete
    5. Exactly, Anon 1:44. I would never object to her hair being up, but there is nothing inappropriate about the coat, especially with black stockings, or the evening dress.

    6. I'm a native New Yorker, and all I have to say is if there's one place Kate can get away with short hemlines - it's New York! I think she looks great!

      Delete
    7. She looks beautiful! I, personally, like a longer hem line but I don't think hers was inappropriately too short. I think longer hem lines are safer for if you have to bend down or if it's a bit windy. I LOVED the coat though. It was perfect for New York...sparkly, classy and sophisticated all in one. They both look so happy and I can't wait to see more.

    10. Fellow tall girl here Sarah!! I'm 5'10 and I know exactly what you mean. If I buy a dress that's meant to be knee length its always a few inches above the knee.

      Delete
    11. Mandy, I loved your response. You kept the conversation positive even if you disagreed a lil with the hemline.

Anyway, in my opinion I loved both outfits of the night. She knew we wanted to see her outfits and she delivered. The dress is perfect for the dinner. I doubt there was dancing at the dinner or anything that required her to twirl or bend over so she's pretty safe with a short hemline. And... she is glowing!

    12. She looks fantastic. The comment about her not looking like a professional adult is out of place. She is a genius at looking exactly appropriate for every occasion.

As always Charlotte...wonderful post!! Kate looks beautiful...LOVING that coat. The color is gorgeous on her. I live on Long Island, only about an hours train ride from NYC, and I'm debating going in. I really don't relish waiting in the freezing cold just for the possibility that I might see them, but it's very tempting. Perhaps I'll go on Tuesday and loiter outside the Carlyle or Met. It would be a shame to miss it...especially since they're so close to where I live!! It would definitely be something to remember. Are there any other NY readers that are going to try to catch a glimpse?

    5. I politely disagree regarding the black dress. To me she looks like she is having a wardrobe malfunction in the black dress. It appears she is wearing a white or nude colored bra under the dress instead of a black one and the flash photography is making it show through. Really kind of takes away from the overall look in my opinion. Loved her maroon arrival coat at the hotel though.

  23. I do think Kate looks great- she really has a glow going on. She looks just so lovely when her face is a little fuller ( I seriously mean that as a compliment.) I do have to agree with some of the other posters about the length of the dresses though- they just don't strike me as "royal." Certainly not inappropriate, particularly with tights, but just too girlish perhaps? I also wonder that she doesn't start using slightly more pigmented lipstick. Now that I'm 30, I also can't pull off quite so nude lipstick. In person it looks ok, but not in photos. However, since she's so loyal to "her look" I'm doubtful that she will change!

  36. I just want to correct you on the Empire State Building if anyone else hasn't yet. It is not lit up red, white and blue because of the royals but of December 7, 1941 which is the bombing of Pearl Harbor. That brought the United States into World War II.

    3. I am so excited that Will and Kate are here in the United States. I am looking forward to reading about the fashion of course, but also the engagements that Will and Kate are going to in NY and DC. I especially hope that William's work in wildlife conservation gets the attention it deserves. That being said, I am extremely disappointed that the Empire State Building is lit up red, white and blue for the royal tour and not for Pearl Harbor Day. It just seems wrong to me to ignore such a significant event in the life of our nation in order to highlight a royal visit. I wonder if the royals know about it and, if so, how they feel given all the wonderful work William and Harry have done to honor the brave men and women of the armed forces.

      Delete
    4. Ya I have to say as an American I am really disappointed in the Empire State building. They could have lit up the building tomorrow for the Royals if they really wanted to, but it is very disrespectful for all those who fought and died in Pearl Harbor. They should have honored them and not the Royals. As much as I like Will and Kate, Pearl Harbor is of more significance to the USA and always will be :(

Yes, Kate has worn other similar dresses, but this one really is beautiful. Even though I'm not a big fan of lace in my own life, I think this dress looks lovely on Kate.

Oh, that leaving picture. Kate looks tiiiiired. Which is fully understandable. Hope she get's a good nights sleep. William looks in better spirits, although since it was a cocktail party that might be the work of some liquid spirits :P I love that he waved though. What's up with him?! Has he gone some "accept your life" course. He seems almost comfortable with the press! Nice to see though!

    1. I was wondering the same thing. William seems to be enjoying the press so far. Especially posing for them at the hotel. It is so out of character for him. He is acting more like a celebrity (which they are) and I love it. Will is even more relaxed in the way he showed more PDA too. I want him to keep it up:)

    2. Officially, Jason Knauf starts working for them in the new year, but perhaps he's had some input? On the other hand, I think William was very gracious with the press as they were leaving the hospital after George was born. I don't know...but I *am* happy to see it! :)

You might be right Royalfan :P If this is the work of Jason Knauf I have very high hopes for the future. I'm not saying William is rude otherwise. But he seemed more ok with it :P

  39. I'm already making my prediction for the basketball game tomorrow. Kate will have on her Mint Velvet plimsolls, Topshop maternity jeans, and some kinda solid color sweater, don't think we'll see a striped top this time.
Lol, I'm being silly having a fun guessing game. Anyone else, thoughts on what she'll wear? Charlotte?

She could do the booties again and wear jeans and a blazer....
The next 2 days will be so much fun! I'm looking forward to all of your coverage, Charlotte!

  40. Love the booties! They are the perfect choice for New York City! Love the coat, the dress, the tights, the whole look!!

I also the love the black lace dress, but the earrings were not my favorite. They looked heavy. Back to the dress, I think we need a new acronym. How about the LBLD-- little, black, lace dress just for Kate?!

  41. a lovely post!
i think she looks fantastic. i love the shoes and the coat is great, too. she has a wonderful, pregnancy glow and looks delighted to be in the City. actually, i think she looks much younger than she has in a while. i'm delighted for them and happy they are here!

Is it just me or does she look more pregnant at 5 months than she was at 5 months when she was pregnant with George?
I'm only 5 hours from nyc but can't get time off to go!
So close to the royals yet so far!
Its funny they r visiting NYC for the first time before I do lol

    1. I don't think you can blame her for picking black, which is very slimming when she is 5 months pregnant. I am also 5 months pregnant and sticking to darker colours gives me some confidence, so maybe the Duchess feels the same way, particularly with so many cameras on her. She would look more pregnant second time around, her muscles are already stretched! This is normal with a second pregnancy, no matter how fit a person is.

  44. Im not in love with this black lace dress. Also, the earrings are too heavy looking for the lace. Her chandeliers or even the ones she arrived in would have gone better.

They both look happy to be here and with each other. It's obvious they love each other. The coat and the lace dress are both lovely. I hope they enjoy the rest of their short visit. Thanks again for your great blog.

  47. Beautiful plum coat.
The black lace is reminding me of funerals and Queen Mary. I agree with those that some color would be better.
Not a fan of short maternity dresses - it does create that baby doll effect that seems immature.
The baby weight does make her look healthy.

Charlotte, you know that I don't like so much to comment outfits, but today I want to say a great YES to the plum chanel-style coat, and also to the hem which is perfect, not too long not too short, young (as the Duchess is young!) but not childish, perfect for the Big Apple in my humble - oh very humble - opinion!

    1. I think in New York, black is expected. If you aren't in black, you stick out like a sore thumb. (Exception, the Sex & the City gals, but they WANTED to stick out.)

    2. Maybe her other black dresses don't fit her right now. And truly, I can't imagine ever having too many LBDs.

  55. Something just looks funky with the coat and dress and I am thinking it's too short maybe - or if she wore black opaque tights it might have worked better for me and been more stream-line. It almost seems to accentuate pregnancy in the look with a pulling of the hem line in the front up.

Oh, for want of some inches. The royal couple look excited and happy, Kate healthy and I love both her outfits except for the length -- if only her skirts didn't go up when her tummy goes out. It isn't a question of being proper - as long as she doesn't bend over -- I just don't think that length becomes her -- it makes her look chunky if that is possible. Put the hems at the knee as she normally does, and these outfits would be perfect. But perhaps she is buying off the peg.

Don't think it is her height. I'm the same or taller (look at her next to Charles in low boots, she is not more than 5'8. The heels deceive) But the coat on the model is even shorter, though the black lace is longer.

Still, so lovely to see them inn NYC--I believe they have caught the energy of the city I always feel when I visit. Hopefully they made lots of money for the foundation from those American rich and will truly put their faces to important causes today.

  60. Catherine looked beautiful in both the plum coat and the black lace dress. Her skin is just gorgeous. And her hair looked wonderful, too. I liked the boots with her coat. Very good beginning!! I hope they have a wonderful time. NYC is very exciting, especially the first time visiting!!

  61. Watching the coverage on the news here in the States of the Royal visit. Kate just walked into the child development center with the Mayor of New York's wife. She has a black coat on with some kind of white detail on the back and sleeve.
I am not old, and age appropriate is a term that is not derogatory. Her look is the same as when she was in her twenties. Most royal watchers understand royal protocol when observing what Kate is wearing and see that her skirt lengths and heel high have not been what is expected and i think that is what is frustrating. Her first year of marriage look was so stunning on her. Her face is just beautiful with pregnancy.

    1. I agree. The coat she has on today is what I would calling a walking length, intended to have a skirt or trousers showing beneath it. The super-short look is not flattering on most women and not as sophisticated as a woman of her agen and position in the world should wear.
I liked her arrival coat very much, lovely color. Her eyebrows look pretty again too. I'm not a fan of the dinner dress, and it might be nice to switch up the black lace on occasion.

  64. Great, quickly updated post, as always! I feel like the headlines should read "In news that surprises nobody, Kate wears a coat... the entire time... as usual". I do like the black coat she wore today but it would be great to see her take her coats off at events to interact. I'd also love to see her in longer hemlines or trousers, at least occasionally, just to mix it up as much as anything (although truthfully I just don't understand why she always wears short dresses). She is a beautiful woman but her style is so boring. I'd love to see her follow Princess Mary of Denmark's style-- she has perfected a classic, simple, chic look. She is also a youngish mother (of 4!) and she is stunning daily, at any kind of event.

  65. I love the Beulah London Amara dress. Really pretty. Any repli-Kates out there? I didn't love the statement earrings too much, but the rest of her look was beautiful. The Seraphine maternity coat was a lovely color with just enough sparkle.

Great looks for their first day in NYC!

  66. I love the Seraphine coat. I feel like its a more flattering fit than the coat today because its actually designed as maternity wear. Great color for her. Her LBD, while pretty, is a miss for me. I don't care for the quality of the lace, but it could be the way it photographs with all the flash. Would loved to see the earrings from her arrival with the LBD. The black courts all look the same to me. She does look beautiful with a fuller figure!!

  68. Seriously, ANOTHER black lace/cutout dress? I've been following Kate's style for years and I'm usually impressed with her selections, but she's gotta quit with these black lace/cutout things. She can afford any fun, exciting dress in the world, yet she wears the same blah style over and over and over. I should put together a photo collage of all her black lace/cutout dresses and send it to her with the words "Enough!!" If she's too tired or busy to think of something else to wear, she should hire a stylist or a personal shopper. Hillary Clinton was known for her love of pant suits, but at least hers were all different colors. Love the blog Charlotte, keep up the good work!
