It's Tory Burch & J Crew for Conservation Reception & NBA Game

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge had a busy (and fun) evening of engagements in New York wrapping up the penultimate day of their trip to the Big Apple.

Before we discuss the game, Kate made a surprise appearance at the conservation reception at the British Consul General's residence with Prince William. It had been billed as a solo event for the Prince, however, it was decided earlier today Kate would accompany him and they would travel to the NBA game afterwards. The Duchess, who is five months pregnant is clearly feeling better and eager to participate in as many events as possible during the trip.

Upon their arrival, shortly after 6 pm, they were photographed chatting with Hillary Clinton and her daughter Chelsea - who gave birth to her own daughter Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky in September - beside a very festive and brightly-lit Christmas tree.

Kate spoke to the former First Lady about her visit to the Northside Development Center earlier today and the benefits of singing to babies. Mrs Clinton told the Duchess, "We're trying to encourage more people to sing...because the research suggests that its beneficial. I often sang to Chelsea when she was younger." Ending on a light note Mrs. Clinton added that when Chelsea became a toddler she would say to her mother, "No sing, no sing".

The reception was co-hosted by the Royal Foundation and the Clinton Foundation, in recognition of the work carried out by Tusk Trust and United for Wildlife partners Wildlife Conservation Society, Conservation International and The Nature Conservancy.

The couple chatted to supporters of wildlife charities in a room which was packed with guests hoping to meet the royals.

Prince William told guests:

"I'm pretty exercised – to put it mildly – about the plight of some of the world's most iconic species. These species are being illegally butchered in the name of trinkets and medicine.
It's easy to blame others for the problem – demand in South East Asia, not enough protection on the ground, and so on. But, if I may say, we could start with looking closer to home. Our own nations still have thriving black markets in these products, and we have to raise the game at home as well as abroad.
But it's not all doom and gloom. You’re the lights at the end of the tunnel. What all of us in this room represent, and tens of thousands of people out there, is solid purpose – a determination not to let our generation be the one that let this catastrophe occur.
Time is running out, but this room reminds us that support is not running out. We can be optimistic."

Before they left, William told guests, "I'm off to shoot some hoops now or whatever it is the Americans call it."

The couple then travelled to Brooklyn where they enjoyed their first NBA game between the Brooklyn Nets and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Upon arrival, they posed for photos.

The couple enjoyed dinner at the Barclays Center in support of United for Wildlife before taking in the second half of the match from court-side seats.

The couple enjoyed popcorn.

This is a great shot :)

World famous player LeBron James spoke about playing in front of the royals on Sunday saying, "It's a huge honour. The stuff that you read about, people like them are only in books growing up. And to hear that they're coming to town to see me do what I do best, its a huge honour.

Beyoncé and Jay Z were also present much to the excitement of the media and royal fans.

They were seated opposite William and Kate and walked over at the end of the 3rd to meet them as Rule Britannia played.

The meeting was arranged before the game.

Their attendance is to help launch a collaboration between William's United for Wildlife organisation and three nominated stars of the sport as ambassadors - Dikembe Mutombo, Serge Ibaka and Al Horford. The partnership aims to use the huge global reach of the NBA to help raise awareness among a younger generation of the negative effects of purchasing illegal wildlife trade goods.

After the game they met Lebron James and received jerseys (how cute is Prince George's).

We discussed the strong possibility of seeing Kate wear a piece by a US designer in recent weeks and tonight she did just that, selecting the Tory Burch Bettina Coat. The metallic tweed garment offers a tailored fit and long sleeves. Like her Seraphine coat, it's quite a festive, sparkly piece. It's available for £515 at Tory Burch and in limited sizes at Lane Crawford and Bloomingdales.

Tory Burch

More from the product description:

'Our Bettina Coat is a textured take on a tailored outerwear style. The material — a cotton blend, woven with bouclé, slubbed and metallic yarns — updates the look of classic tweed with a horizontal-stripe effect and a hint of shine. It has an easy, streamlined cut that is universally flattering and features slit pockets and a row of hidden snaps for a clean finish.'

Kate first wore a Tory Burch design in New Zealand earlier this year for a play date with Prince George. The Paulina Open-Knit Dress proved a very popular choice.

Kate teamed the coat with black skinny jeans. Royal correspondent Rebecca English received confirmation the jeans are by J Crew.

The Toothpick jean in black are currently available in regular and tall reduced from $115 to $105. The toothpick is described as the brands "Skinniest style, lean cropped and a little bit sexy". They are made from a high-tech Turkish cotton with stretch woven into it for a superflattering fit.

J Crew

There's an excellent discount available for purchases over $100 at J Crew.

The Duchess wore her Stuart Weitzman Power Pumps.

The pumps are currently on sale in a variety of colours at Stuart Weitzman.

Stuart Weitzman

Kate wore sparkling new earrings tonight.

It has been suggested by several readers that Kate may have worn the Patrick Mavros Crocodile Stud Silver Earrings. Mr. Mavros is based in Zimbabwe and actively supports conservation efforts - making him an ideal choice of jeweller for the evening.

Patrick Mavros

Kate also wore a black top underneath her coat and carried her Mulberry clutch.

I think this was a very chic look for Kate and one which carried her from a reception with the Clintons to dinner and an NBA game. It's perhaps my favourite of her New York looks thus far. Do you like it?

You can watch a video from the game at You Tube.

The couple have a full day of engagements tomorrow beginning with a visit to the 9/11 Memorial Museum. We'll see you then.

  1. Maternity jeggings? No, I do not like. Nor is William's outfit appropriate, so they both get dinged this time.

    1. William's shirt is perfectly appropriate for a basketball game. The gents behind him in suits are probably security or officials. He looks like a fan.

I do like Kate's ensemble tonight. It has a very modern chic look. I liked the color of her arrival coat better, but this outfit is a great combination for the reception and the game.

Hillary's story about Chelsea, who is a rather serious type, is very funny. Hillary is known to be tone deaf; she has been caught by microphones singing completely off key, and she says she has no ear for languages, either. Thank goodness she has other superb talents, including a saucy sense of humor!

    2. Can we talk about how attractive William is getting again?
      - Super powerful speech on wildlife conservation this morning
      - Attentive to his wife and delighted with his boy
      - His clothes are fitting better and have been perfect for every occasion this trip. I like this choice for a basketball game in Brooklyn.
      Maybe I have a crush. Don't judge.

    3. It may not be a crash. William is a big winner on this visit including his speech. Even his personality is genuinely enhanced, looks very much at home, comfortable, confident and his star is shinning in USA.

As far as ivory trade and conservation, the users/ "the enemy" that has its advantage and use for ivory is watching. Just like land mining in Princess Diana's case, his open advocacy and campaign also means huge monetary disadvantage to some. I hope he trades carefully and stay safe. This visit is establishing powerful and popular backers including NBA, GCF and others.

    2. I think the shirts are tasteless and for them to wear them in such a televised manner when they knew more people would be watching because Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge was attending. I am completely embarrassed by their actions. The NBA should have handled it's own better. The complete lack of protocol when it came to The Duchess by putting his arm around her when the pictures were taken. She handled it wonderfully. As to her choice of the night, I think she looks beautiful from head to toe.

Please tell me you're not calling the "I Can't Breathe" shirts tasteless. They speak to an incredibly important issue in the US - how people of color are treated by police. How is it tasteless to show support for a a father of four children who was killed by a police officer using an illegal chokehold, despite saying "I can't breathe" several times? Good for Lebron for speaking up. If you're talking about something else though, please ignore all of the above :)
I really don't get this hoopla about Lebron putting his arm around her though. Lebron was being friendly. He would have done it with anyone else, and I'm not sure why he should be expected to follow the norms of royalty when the US does not even have a monarchy and did not invite Kate and William to visit. If I saw Kate and William, I would treat them with as much respect as anyone else. Not any less and also not any more, because I do not think that being royal allows you special treatment. And I hope you realize that it was an incredible opportunity for Catherine to get to meet Lebron. People seem to think it's only the other way around. Mostly, it is just unbelievably classist and snobby to be "completely embarrassed" by a famous basketball player showing some friendliness towards the royal couple.

I like the look of the Tory Burch coat with the black skinny jeans and pumps very much. She looked very smart. That's great news that she was well and rested enough to attend both the reception and the game. Personally, for me the reception was the more important event, so I'm happy she was able to go. I love the photos of the Cambridges and the Clintons. But the best photo is the one where LeBron James makes Kate and Wills actually look short. Wow.

While I liked the earlier outfit that Kate wore to the Children's Center, I thought slacks would have been more comfortable, but then, she never wears slacks, does she? I wonder why not.

Thanks for your excellent and seemingly effortless coverage, Charlotte. What a trouper you are!

    2. Right! When I first saw the photo, it was on another website that didn't have it identified, and I just made an erroneous assumption. I am NOT a sports fan, so I don't know what LeBron James looks like, sorry!

    3. Why can't she rock some tailored cigarette slacks? People were in suits and dresses and those look like jeans from the inside seam stretching in that one picture. Everything else has been bang on and she is so beautiful. It's a respect thing. Dress for meeting Hilary Clinton and going to a reception. They are dressed up, she should not be in jeans. Yes, she did have two events to go to. Slacks would be appropriate at a basketball game, jeans are not appropriate at that reception.

      Delete
    4. I know the article says they're jeans, but to be honest they don't look like jeans to me at all. They look like skinny slacks which are usually a different material.

    7. Kate was not originally scheduled to go to the reception. She had to dress for the combination of events at the last minute, with whatever was available in her luggage. She did it well, and I love her chic, modern look.

      Delete
    8. I don't see anything harsh or judgmental here. Let's allow people their opinions, please. In a pinch this does look well put together but it wold be better if they were clearly slacks, which could be worn to both events.

  4. I am a huge fan of the Duchess so please do not misconstrue this as a criticism, but it seems to me that she has essentially adopted and updated the Queen's penchant for the coat dress ensemble. I love every coat she wears, but am wondering what's going on underneath? On the other hand, if everything I wore was going to subject to public scrutiny what could be easier than a chic coverup? You go girl.

I've been checking the blog religiously all day for updates. Thank you, Charlotte for all your hard work! I love this coat. And I may be in the minority here but, the coat seems too nice to pair with jeans. But that's just my opinion. At least she didn't wear the navy skinnys. I can't wait for more pictures!

    3. Anonymous9 December 2014 at 05:05 Agreed. Tailored slacks would have been appropriate for both the game and the reception.

      Delete
    4. maybe she wore jeans instead of slacks to better match william? and i do understand william (and, in turn, kate) wanting to dress more casually and "young" at a sporting event where the vast majority of the ppl (as opposed to the couple dozen officials around the couple) are dressing casually. this is a younger generation of royals, and should be (need to be) appealing and connect-able to younger people. and not wearing a formal suit to a basketball game is more relatable.

tho i do agree that for the formal pics, william could have put on a blazer.

      Delete
    5. If she wore slacks to the game she wouldn't have been out of place but the other way around (jeans - if they are jeans - at a reception) is a little awkward for everyone who did dress for a reception. Love Williams look for both events.

I can't help but laugh at the picture of them holding the basketball. It's clear that they aren't quite as familiar with the sport as they are with the other games they've participated in. It's wonderful how such diverse groups are joining together for a common goal--it's nice to see them do something new!

In this case I think it might have been to not draw attention to the fact that she's pregnant.

      Delete
    2. She probably just chills easily. I am rarely comfortable in sleeveless shirts...even in summer. In fact, there's always a cardigan in my bag, just in case the temperature dips below 73 degrees.

      Delete
    3. It's probably a combination of the two. Not wanting to draw attention to her bump, and being chilly.
I know what you mean caren.carrillo, I carry a cardigan with me every where as well. I'm always cold too, even in the summer. It can be really uncomfortable.

      Delete
    4. She unbuttoned her coat, which means she was probably warm. But I have a feeling the sweater underneath showed off her bump and she doesn't like showing it. As people have said before, she seems uncomfortable with the weight gain. I think that is also why she has been wearing so much black, to help hide the baby weight.

      Delete
    5. It cannot be that she chills easily. She didn't wear a coat the other day for the evening reception, and she didn't wear a coat a lot when she was pregnant before. Many expectant mothers run "warm".

      Delete
    6. I imagine it would feel quite invasive having everyone focus on your bump. If I could play stylist, I would have had her change at the same time as William into a chic billowy sweater for the game. With those pants and shoes. Not her style but definitely mine and she would look lovely.

  13. Kate is really hitting the fashion mark on this tour! I've loved each outfit so far and think she looks great. I have to say though, as a women close to Kate's age, I really disagree with everyone who's been remarking that her dresses have been too short on this tour, and that she needs to dress "her age!" She's still young! She's gorgeous and she's clearly confident enough to pull off the length.

And one more point, I think Kate's doing a great job drawing attention to all these charities. I'm not exactly sure what people are wanting when they say she isn't "working," or doing anything to help. She's trying to bring a spot of light to kids in need by showing that she has an interest in them. I think that says a lot about her as a person.

It's ridiculous to compare how much work she does with diana when she is not in the same role. the only relevant work schedule to compare diana's to, would be camila's. i have to wonder if there just isn't some jealousy going on on an unconscious level that causes this need to belittle her.

  24. I like this ensemble, but of course I think her hair up would have been really cute (I'm just a fan when her hair is up). I do think it's not quite right for a basketball game though.... perhaps she should have changed into something more relaxed. It just seems a bit stiff. A nice sweater with a scarf would have been perfect, but maybe she's trying to hide her bump? Seems silly considering everyone knows she's pregnant, but who knows.
Also I know it's completely unrelated and while she's not the topic of discussion here.... wtf is Beyoncee wearing?

  28. ok guys let's stop talking about Kate because for after a LONG time, the person who really stole the limelight here is none other than Prince William himself!!! I mean, how handsome does HE look? I think it is a great departure from his usual "blue" attire (blue shirt, blue jeans, blue tie, blue suit - he was literally on the blue run) But tonite he REALLY stole the show!! He looks utterly handsome in that checkered shirt!! He finally hit the home run!

ok now back to the duchess of course :) - She looks relaxed, the coat is definitely a wowza and I'm glad she wore pants this time. love love love!!

    2. Agreed. He is looking so great this trip. The blue suit fit so well and I like the shirt and tie he picked with it today and this casual outfit is HOT. Is it possible to say that with respect. I mean it with respect. And his speech was great and he looks confident and relaxed while taking things seriously. Great work!

    3. I agreed with Lekheeka. Blue27 I like his formal and casual. His style has been getting better for sure though. There was a time when the suits fit poorly but not this trip! 30. While I am not one that usually is negative to Kate's selection of beautiful clothes, this one was WAY of the mark. I have attended many "working" sporting events with my husband who is a high profile executive. Her attire was not appropriate , I am sorry she did not receive correct advice. But she is in the United States and I would not know how to dress for a Polo Match in England! Tired of the shorter styles, we all know she has great legs.
I am astounded at all the information provided on this wonderful Blog. Thank you all for your honest reviews, without being nasty. As a first time poster, I hate to be negative. I do not believe Kate was wearing skinny jeans, but rather "leggings". They are used very often in the States, just not in the combination she chose.

i just watched coverage of the game on ESPN (our big sports tv network). 36. I love this look. I don't love this look for a basketball game. She should have swapped out the heels for those furry Aquatalia wedge boots she wore in December 2013. Then it would have been fine. It's beyond me why anyone, including Beyonce, including Kate, would wear heels to a basketball game.
I love Tory Burch and I'm really glad to see Kate wearing the brand.
But so far her looks have been spot on and great. Nice to see her supporting William in his efforts. I still wish he'd pick a few more relevant causes to get involved with but it is nice to see them on the job.

  37. Your coverage, as always, is excellent. Thank you! I have a question about the Duchess' outfit. In some pictures, there seems to be a couple of inches of another garment (not the jeans) showing below her coat's hem. Other pictures show only the coat and jeans. Did she peel out of a tunic or short dress at some time? I love this outfit, even with this mystery.

  38. Thanks Charlotte for all your energy & flair in bringing us these posts. I agree with your assessment of this outfit as ‘chic’ – great look. The Seraphine coat is also special. Kudos too to the First Lady of NY on her stylish outfit. It’s also awesome to see the great work being done by the Northside Development Center being showcased.

I had my grandmother to myself at the hospital last night & so I took along my computer to read your NY posts to her. She loved all the detail you give and was especially touched by the happiness of the Duke & Duchess. She had an interesting reaction to the comments about the length of Kate’s dresses and royal protocol. She just chuckled and said that some commenters here clearly haven’t looked at photos of the Queen in the 1960s and early ‘70s nor the shift dresses that Princess Anne wore in her 20s & early 30s. Then she added ‘Nothing wrong with the length of the clothes. She’s a duchess not a nun’.

    2. I also love your grandmother, and she is right about royal hem lengths! I remember them, too.

The extra fabric is a shadow cast by Kate's coat in the bright light from flash cameras. But she did don a black turtleneck when William changed into his nice plaid shirt, and she opened the coat at the basketball game. That looks nice. I agree that William has looked good on this trip. I only did not like his bright blue suit and tie for the dinner last night. His Washington attire was perfect.

The young man in the background of the picture of the Clintons and Cambridges shaking hands is Marc Mezvinsky, Chelsea Clinton's husband. Looking at other pictures, I wonder how William and Catherine liked the popcorn! LOL

Once anon from Leominister ( one of this blog's participant whose posts I like reading) mentioned that you are a decade younger than William. If you are really in your early twenty's, that is even very impressing. Take care and best wishes.

  42. Her wardrobe is completely on point for NYC so far. It is 100% city-chic, but does not stray too far from her her personal style. She looked stunning this morning in a classically cut coat dress that enhanced her best asset -- those gorgeous legs. As every pregnant woman hopes to do, she is accentuating the positive. Trying to go from a reception to a basketball game is no small feat and she managed it perfectly. The Tory Burch is a divine choice. I love the metallic thread, boucle feel, and simple cut. She is upscale, classy, and current. No small task at any time -- nevertheless while pregnant.

    1. Agreed--except that she has so many assets that it's hard to single out her legs as the best. I loved this coat and the skinny pants with it. They don't look like jeans though it's hard to tell from the photos given. The stove-pipe style pants on the Burch catalogue model look quite awful with the coat. And heels like this have been worn with skinny pants for decades. I have no quarrel with that sexy-casual look--especially since it has to transition between two very different events.

  51. Love this look! The Duchess has worn a lot of black in the last two days - and that is very NY. I live here and most of us women live in black for work etc. I have a feeling that the Duchess may have a huge pop of color for her last event on Tuesday - the big dinner at the Museum. (By the way that museum is right near where Jacqueline Kennedy's apartment was and Jackie could look out her window towards the museum windows where this temple is and where the dinner will be tomorrow night. Jackie has a big hand in getting that temple sent and re-assembled at the Met).

It is so exciting to have them here! Such an honor to be at the White House and so on - it's such a thrill. I still can't believe the schedule - there are like 15 events in two days - crazy!

  52. Focusing solely on the "look"; boring and unstylish! The coat's fabric needs a better soled shoe (not party pumps) - the skinny jeans and the elaborately styled hair will never be a good match.

But her smile is genuinely warm. And that's what really matters!

I know we all like it when she mixes things up and wears it in a ponytail or an updo, but since it's such a signature part of her look, and the average American isn't as big a fan of the Duchess as we are to where they would get tired of always seeing her hair down, I think it's been appropriate that she's rocking some excellent long, loose curls.

  63. I think Catherine looked fabulous, and the classiest person there. Which brings me to comments I do not usually make, but I just have to this once. I was both appalled and not surprised at the inappropriate behavior of LeBron James. Appalled that, as the Sydney Herald said, "Apparently Mr. James did not get the Palace memo that royalty is not supposed to be touched." I can just see the Queen and Prince Charles cringing, as did I -- that sweat-drenched "person" hanging over her! Ugh!! Poor Catherine. I bet she was glad to get away from there!! I'm not surprised, because American basketball players have the brains of Neanderthals! Basketball isn't exactly the great showcase for American Sport to the Royals. It's a far cry from Cricket and Polo isn't it!! It would have been far more impressive if they could have seen a Patriot's game and met Tom Brady, for example! But that's just my opinion. I'm sure the royals haven't been blown away by any of this. I think they probably realize we are not ALL Barbarians over here! Some may look at these comments as snooty. I don't mean it that way. I just think classiness, discretion and refinement are important, and it's sobering that we are fast losing all that in America. It makes me sad.

You may not mean it this way, but your comments certainly seem snooty to me. Different people have different definitions of what it means to be "classy." Lebron was being friendly. And to say that basketball players have the brains of neanderthals is incredibly rude. Wow. Lebron is not only the best basketball player in the world, he also has his own charitable foundation, which he does work for OUTSIDE of having to play more than 100 basketball games (and travel for them) every year. He, and every other professional basketball player in the US, has worked harder than Kate ever has. The United States is different in many ways from Britain. That doesn't make it any better or worse. Trying to be friendly and putting your arms around another person does not make someone a barbarian. Interestingly, Jay-Z put his hands on William's shoulders but no one seems to care about that. And I hope you realize that it was an incredible opportunity for Catherine to get to meet Lebron. People seem to think it's only the other way around.

Also, frankly your post strikes me as a little racist. It uses Western (i.e. white) standards of "civility" to judge a black person. Not everyone is required to fit into your idea of what it means to be classy and refined. I find it interesting that you picked sports that traditionally have much more caucasian players as examples of sports that meet your standards. Because what in the world is more "classy" about the Patriots? They run around trying to hit people during their games. But Tom Brady is white and probably meets your (white) standards of civility more.

I am an American who loves my country very, very much. I was devastated watching people on 911 jump to their death, knowing they would die, but preferred that to burning to death. I have a husband who serves with his life for my country. To say I would be offended if anyone said anything negative or showed a lack of respect for it while visiting would be an understatement.
Having now said that: Kate's choice in attire is not a disgrace, disappointment, disgust, lack of taste, tactless or any other adjective as such. It is none of these things because what matters is the INTENT of the HEART that visits such a tragic place. It is the EMOTION and SPIRIT that goes into the visit. It is the CHOICE to visit and pay RESPECT. There was nothing but heart and goodwill that went into their visit today and that's all that should be thought about and all that matters. How can one judge heart to clothes?
