Kate Supports Action on Addiction's Autumn Gala in Temperley London Dress

The Duchess of Cambridge attended Action on Addiction's Autumn Gala evening dinner and reception in London this evening.

Her Royal Highness has been making a comeback to royal engagements this week - this is her third in three days - with a state visit role and two evening events. It would seem after over two months of illness, Kate is very much on the mend and once again tonight she looked well and very happy.

The Duchess walked the pink carpet upon arrival, a lovely touch for the event considering pink is the colour of the charity's logo.

The Duchess, became patron of Action on Addiction in January 2012. It was one of her very first choices, and since then has visited a number of the charity's services including Clouds House residential treatment centre in Wiltshire, Hope House and supported the family programme M-PACT. In a statement the charity said, "Her Royal Highness has brought much needed attention to a problem that affects a great many lives and in so doing helps to challenge stigma."

The purpose of the black-tie dinner is to thank supporters who have helped fund much-needed service, and to encourage further support.

Guests enjoyed a pre-dinner reception with a pianist before hearing a speech by the Charity's Chair John Lloyd. Well known comedian and impersonator Rory Bremner also performed (one wonders if he omitted his popular Prince Charles impersonation given Kate's presence :)).

Clarence House shared this photo of Kate mingling with guests.

Clarence House Twitter Feed

Kate said she was glad to be getting out of the house and fielded questions about whether she is expecting a boy or a girl.

More from the Express story:

'Christopher said afterwards "She's a fabulous woman, she does so much for charity. We're obviously all aware, there was a bit of nervousness that this may not happen with her being here. But we're so pleased that she's recovered and she's here. She said she's loving being here.
I think there was talk of her heels and there was talk about the baby and I think someone asked the question 'What is it going to be?' but she didn't answer'.

Kate chatted with millionaire Hans Rausing. The 51-year-old was convicted of preventing the lawful and decent burial of his wife Eva's body by keeping it in the house for two months after she died from an overdose. The heir to the Tetra Pak fortunate is a major supporter of the charity.

The event was hosted at the award-winning Italian restaurant L'Anima. Translated as Italian for soul, this essence has been incorporated in the every detail of the trendy, sophisticated restaurant and bar.

L'Anima

From delicious contemporary Italian cuisine, to a superb wine list, friendly staff and inviting interiors, L'Anima has become incredibly popular in London  and it's always nice to see successful businesses giving back by providing the venue for a night such as this.

The Duchess appeared to be having a great time.

Kate's attendance at the gala has been very important for the organisation in terms of media awareness. Having such a high-profile figure support such a worthy cause and bring awareness is exactly what they need in order to keep providing vital services and support. For the Duchess, it's excellent to see her showing her support tonight for her patronage.

In a foreword for the programme tonight, Kate wrote "During the time I have spent with clients and staff I have been privileged to see phenomenal work which the charity undertakes to improve the lives of those affected by addiction".

As many of our readers know, Action on Addiction is the only UK charity working across the addiction field in research, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation, professional education and development, and support for families. Addiction is incredibly prevalent in our society with one in three people suffering from it. If you wish to donate or find out more please click here.

Action on Addiction

You can also read the charity's clients' stories on the website. Henry reveals in his story he weighed little over five and half stones and could not walk up a flight of stairs when he entered the medical centre. Henry eloquently writes, "without the 'magic' of Clouds House I would have died, there is no doubt. I owe my life to all the people who worked and helped Clouds House function in the early days."

Action on Addiction

Chief executive, Nick Barton said:

'The Duchess of Cambridge has shown unwavering support of the charity and we are delighted that our patron is able to attend the Autumn Gala evening. We are enormously grateful that Her Royal Highness helped us to keep addiction very much in the spotlight by her involvement to help reduce the stigma surrounding the condition.
The charity's mission is to free people from addiction and we hope this evening will help us to make further progress in achieving that aim.'

Moving on to what Kate wore this evening.

We had been hoping we would see Kate in another formal gown for the gala, however, the nature of event saw guests dressed in cocktail dresses. The Duchess did not disappoint in a pretty black dress by Temperley London.

Temperley London

The Emblem Flare Dress from Temperley London's Pre-Fall Collection is a long-sleeved dress inspired by stained glass ironwork and woven from a light-weight cotton-blend yarn. Delicate panels expose the nude slip and the design is finished with a slashed neckline and a scooped neck. It's currently available for £595 on the website and at Shoptiques.

Temperley London

For those who like the design of the dress, other items in the Emblem range include the Stretch Cotton-Blend Dress and the Emblem Top.

Temperley London

Kate's dress includes a bow belt, the Duchess may have added it herself.

Readers correctly noted similarities to the belt Kate wore with her much loved Temperley London Amoret Gown. From looking at photos it appears they are different, as you can see the belt is velvet which the one worn tonight does not appear to be.

Kate teamed the dress with her gorgeous black suede Jimmy Choo Cosmic Pumps.

Jimmy Choo

Kate's worn these diamond earrings several times, they were reportedly a wedding gift from Prince Charles.

A closer look.

Kate carried a black beaded clutch tonight, it is similar to one she was photographed carrying several years ago. We'll update when we know for certain.

What do you think of Kate's look tonight? The dress wasn't a favourite of mine, however it looked great  on Kate. I don't think it photographed as well as previous dresses due to the nude lining.

  1. Another great dress. Saw pictures of them laying that shocking pink carpet and was hoping she wouldn't clash.
Catherine looks beautiful, but more important she must be feeling better, as it's reported she is staying to the dinner.
A very worthy charity too---so many lives ruined through addiction. and it has a particularly destructive effect on the children of addicts and she is also patron of charities dealing with that..
I love those earrings, but wonder why she never wears her wedding earrings which were superb--Are they still in an exhibition somewhere?
Maybe there will be some more announcements of engagements tomorrow.

  2. For the first time ever, I think a dress doesn't look good on Kate.

I don't like the dress, but what surprises me is that it makes Kate look way worse than she is.

    1. I totally agree. Kate is so beautiful, but this dress is the first mis-step I've seen on her. Yikes! That dress is a confusing, hot mess and does nothing to flatter her at all.

Glad to see she is feeling better. I wish her good health on her pregnancy.

A theory. Maybe she has choosen "overly distracting" dresses (this and the blue gown) to subvert from her. One would think you get more attention by wearing edgier clothing. But in this case it is only partly true. She gets more focus but SHE doesn't get more focus. People stop after analyzing the dress etc. They don't go as much further analyzing to much eyeliner, wrinkles around the mouth and even the bump (not saying these features were there) or her behavior (as in tired eyes, swallowing a little nausea etc). It is a quite effective way to get attention without you self getting the attention if you know what I mean. Just a theory, but if that is what she's doing it's quite smart!

    4. Mmm, I hope she doesn't feel like she has to wear disasters to have people let her live!

Jokes apart, I see the cleverness of the strategy you describe, but I don't think Kate would really dress bad for that.
Distracting, like the super slit, yes.
Distracting in a way that doesn't flatter her or her sense of style, mmm no.

P.s. I really enjoy reading your comments, Rebecca! :)

    5. I agree. Hate the dress. It's ugly. Comparing it to the beautiful Amoret gown she wore a few years ago is ridiculous.

    6. This dress is NOT good. There's too much going on with all the cut-outs (and I'm not a fan of cut-outs in general). I think the dress would have worked much better without the award bands across the torso and the cheer cut-outs on the sleeves, just leaving the geometric patterns on the skirt. The shoes a great though.

I didn't mean distracting as in ugly. Just as in much happening on the dress or like show legs. I like the dress (kind of) in indoor lighting. Not a hit but not as ugly as some others seem to think!

      (Thank you Camilla, the same!)

  7. As much as I would have liked to see a gown, I always love Kate's choice in cocktail dresses! This is one that looks a bit more rocker-chic on the model (perhaps it's the shooties?), but Kate's hair and jewelry takes off a bit of the edginess.

  8. Great post!
What a great 3 days of Kate! I think she is looking better but not the best we have seen of her.
I love the fact she is supporting her charities! I lovr the fact the she has been wearing new dresses. I like her dress tonight but I dislike the chest area. It shows too much bra through the fabric!
I am hopeful that there are going to be new events announced for her schedule!!

I agree with this whole post.

My guess on the bra? It might be a new one since she probably have a different size. So maybe she didn't have the "right color". To bad. But hey, a innocent mistake.

      Delete
    2. One more thing...I really wished she would have done something different her hair! It is looking too heavy again, like it's weighing her down!

      Delete
    3. Rebecca from Sweden, I agree that the bra might be a new one in a different size since she's pregnant. The last picture above that's inside without the flash bulbs shows the dress at its best. I think she looks stunning in it (inside the building). She made it more formal with the belt, bag, and jewelry. Again with a dress of "light-weight" fabric, I still wonder if the three outfits we've seen this week were originally designed and purchased for Malta where the temperatures would have been warmer. With the Temperley dress, Kate would have had the right color bra and her chest might have been smaller so the flash bulb effect might have been less. Kate's the perfect one to recycle and watch the budget by wearing the Malta clothes now before her body changes more. She's always beautiful! So glad she's back! Katherine USA

      Delete
    4. I think Kate should take pictures in her outfits with the flash on too see how she looks! Like Cher on Clueless! It will help avoid certain mistakes!

      Delete
    5. This bra-issue under black/with flashbulbs is pretty well-known and documented (there are a slew of celebrity photographs out there on fashion "don't" lists). This was a mistake that could have been so easily avoided. Don't like the dress, and especially don't like the bra fashion faux pas.

    6. It's not a bra! It's a nude slip that comes with the dress. She would not step out showing her bra.

      Delete
    7. I don't think that's her bra that's showing, I think the black fabric is lighter and the nude slip is heavier so the slip is showing through, especially in the bright lights and the camera flashes. It's giving the illusion that it's her bra, it's just the nude fabric which is, of course, covering her bust.
Although Kate's "girls" have put on some weight, along with the rest of her. Hopefully, that's helping to ease the HG. She looks better with a little weight on her.
That whole social X-ray thing she was rocking pre-preggers was just kind of creepy and scary.

      Delete
    8. Now that I've seen the back of the dress, it's true---not a bra---but a built in with the nude covering. I agree that nude slip is heavier and def a fashion faux pas! Kate is so beautiful, it's hard to see something not work. Katherine USA

      Delete
    9. Agree it's the nude lining.

About the new size bra: she was pregnant another time. I guess she still has a collection of bigger brad from George's time.

Seeing the pictures inside, I have to say the dress and Kate both look better.
Still, seeing how it looks on the model, it seems to be a dress that looks better on flatter figures.
Like the white Roland Mouret: I think Kate looked so much better when she wore it the first time, without the extra curves.

      Camilla

    10. I agree, it is the nude slip under the dress. With the flash, you can see the entire slip if you look closely.

    11. can someone tell me why the only way I can publish is under anonymous? PS, I think Kate looks terrific. She sparkles from with in, and the light flies from her face!!!

      Delete
    12. I have been reading around, and some think it's a bra under the lining and that it's a white bra and that you can see her nipples. I can see the bra argument, as I look at the lining but to be honest, I never want to look at someone else's dress that closely. All this being said, these types of discussions could probably be avoided if she hired a dresser who would know how something would photograph with flashbulbs going off.

Hmm, looking closer I am getting a little unsure. The old one was very "square" in the bow with no "tucking in the middle. The band also was velvet. This new one seems to be a thinner kind of band and the bow is tucked in the middle as well as "fluffier"/rounder.

I was very surprised to see Kate at another engagement. I loved the dress and thought she looked very, very nice. She certainly wore it better than the model. One question? Was the hemline even all around? In some pictures the hemline looks longer in the back than the front. I can't tell from the different angles. But I don't think Amal Clooney has anything to worry about. LOL.

Might be the stomach "lifting up" the front hem. Also, people have noted that she tend to stand a little back-heavy and that gives the impression of the uneven hems.

  16. I'm not sure what people are talking about with her bra showing? The dress is underlined in white and the black fabric over her bust seems to have a figured or textured look. It's a fun, youthful look and I think she looks great. With the blue Jenny Packham last night, she's really on a roll. She looks better in health than yesterday morning, I am lad she seems to be on the mend.

    1. I agree. I think people are seeing the white/light nude lining beneath the dress and thinking that it's her bra showing. The lining shows most in the places where the dress is most fitted--her bust. I don't think a black bra would have helped any, since it's the lining that we're seeing through the black overlay.

      Delete
    2. I agree about the lighter fabric lining being the "culprit" here.

      Delete
    3. To add to my previous post: if anything, I think Kate *is* wearing a black bra--you can see it best in the last close-up picture of the dress above the pics of her clutch and earrings. The flash just isn't kind to this particular dress, though it looks lovely in the indoor photos without flash.

    5. A black bra under a nude liner? That would show even more! I think she wore a white or light nude bra under the liner and it shows in some of the photos. I think you're seeing a seam on the dress.

      Delete
    6. I don't know what color her bra is, but I tend to doubt she opted for black since it would show through the liner and look even worse. The dress is fine; it's just not flashbulb friendly.

    3. Amy, I agree. The first thing I thought was "That dress is a hot mess". It just has too much going on. I think it's the panels in the sleeves as well as everywhere else. The sleeve panels take it to a whole other level. If the sleeves didn't have the panels, then I think it would be better. Just too busy as is.

And the stretch version of the dress? That one says Kardashian all over it. Ugh!

I do give her kudos for trying to be different. I am not one to get bored with her choices -- I try to mimic her classic style just because it's so timeless. This dress to me is too trendy I think. I don't see it standing the test of time, but I am no fashion expert by any stretch of the imagination myself. Who knows, maybe the dress will grow on me. It did look better inside...

However, as someone else pointed out, the important thing is that she's healthy and out and about. And she does look great -- I wish I looked that good after being sick for 6 weeks. I don't even look that good now, and I haven't been sick!

  18. I think Kate looks great!! I love the dress on her and I would love to own it myself! Too bad she did not wear a black bra underneath. Oh, well mistakes do happen. She looks so healthy and vibrant and ready to take on the world in my opinion - very confident. After being so sick she seems ready to get back into her public life and to take on the world. While she was sick I am sure she had plenty of time to ponder her life and her family's life and how blessed they truly are and what an important supporter of her many charities that she is. I went through a terrible few weeks of sickness and it really put life into perspective for me and how we take so many things for granted each day especially good health. I was more thankful than I ever had been in my life when I returned to good health. I can see this in Kate too. She has a definite spring in her step and I am so happy she is back in the public eye. I truly hope the remainder of her pregnancy is a healthy one.

  19. That is not her bra showing, it is the slip which likely came sewn into the dress. Sometimes I find her attire to be too matronly (while I do understand her role and the attire it requires), so it is really nice to see her wear something with a little more style and sense of fashion to it for an event where she isn't merely a royal figurehead but a passionate patron. Sometimes a sassy cocktail dress is all that is needed for a black tie event held in a more casual setting (like a restaurant). I love the look! Though she should experiment more with her hairstyles -- her hair is too pretty to always wear in the same curled style!

  20. Love Kate. Love her style. Don't like this dress, too busy for me, but no one can say it's dull and boring. Just because it's black tie, doesn't mean it's long dress formal. 22. The dress is lined in a light-colored fabric; that's not the color of her bra peeking through! I think the lining is showing too much because it's tighter in the chest than it should be, probably her breasts are enlarged faster than she was expecting.

I do have kids and I know one often shows earlier with the second pregnancy, but I honestly think she may indeed be having twins. She is long-waisted and had such strong, toned abdominal muscles going into the pregnancy that I wouldnt have expected so much difference between how she looks now, and how she looked at this stage of her first pregnancy. And it's not just her stomach, it's also her bust. Time will tell, of course, but it's fun to speculate. :)

Of course, mainly I'm just happy to see that she isn't too thin after all the trouble with HG. Obviously she got excellent care from very early on.

Her hair is gorgeous and it is kind of her trademark but after seeing it styled in the exact same way and after her outfit choices are all very similar as well, it kinda gets boring.

  28. Beautiful and outstanding outfit. It's so good to see Kate three times in three days. I am sure there will be other engagements in the days to come.
Fair, fair and warm-hearted young lady. She has but to appear to gift people with joy and comfort. A great quality in one who will one day become Queen.
Miss Charlotte, you are doing a fantastic work. You are the soul of this wonderful blog. Many thanks to you!

Thanks Charlotte for a great review of Action on Addiction - a very important charity.

Not my favourite dress of Kate's but I like her in cocktail dresses and she looks wonderful in black. Very healthy tonight too. Hope we will see her out on a reasonable basis - not clumped engagements. Just delighted to see her now after the long fallow period

It's curious to me that Kate often picks styles close to what she has worn before. The two green coats in Australia. The royal blue McCartney dress so similar to the one she wore at the Tower. (Which came in other colours.) The coat dress reminded me of her last day in Australia (and wish McQueen would rediscover buttons - those hidden plackets often don't fit perfectly). Tonight's dress reminds me of one Kate wore a year ago (also Temperley as I recall but I could be wrong) that had similar cut-outs. This is not a criticism - more a puzzlement.

I thought the dropped back tonight added a nice touch of style and the length is very good on her. Really no quibble with this dress - just like some of her others much better. Glad she feels up to facing food - and looks like she's gaining some healthy weight - all very good news - but the best is the attention she has brought to this fine cause. .

I too thought of last year's stained-glass-windows-inspired Temperley dress. I'm glad to see you thought of it; I don't feel that I'm off the wall linking the two. I liked last year's dress, but this year not so much. However, she looked great, and I agree that she looks good in black. I too like cocktail dresses, although I won't say no to seeing a lovely gown almost anytime it can be managed, such as last night's!

The charity is a particularly good one to highlight. But when I saw all the wine glasses, I had to sort of chuckle--how is it for recovering alcoholics to come and be confronted with such a choice?! However, I don't know whether this charity treats alcoholism or if it's just drugs. Does anyone else know?

    2. I totally agree with your puzzlement why she picks almost similar outfits. This dress also is so similar to another black cocktail Temperly dress from 2013. Especially because she is known for her recycles. Why then not pick entirely different items... Because piece 1a worn 2 times plus piece 1b worn 2 times, makes 4 times almost the same outfit. It also makes me think her thriftiness is not about economizing/not wanting to spent to much. I love quality clothes but am on a budget so i always make sure the items that i buy really add something to my wardrobe. I don't even have 2 pairs of jeans (but the one pair i have is amazing :).

Might be an interesting post: same same but different items from kate's wardrobe. Bet it will be a loooong post!

    3. I'm with you, anon from Leomister, I also think she sticks to styles and a lot of the new outfits are very similar to past things she has worn.

Like the coat dress to greet the Singapore PM was very, very similar to the coat she wore for the last event in Australia (pictured with it when boarding the plane too). Oh and then the pink Emilia Wickstead worn twice in pink and then teal during the tour :P

I do find it boring... mostly because she hardly changes her hair and it's the same outfit same hair, same makeup and different color. I think that is another reason why I love hats so much, they change her outfit. Hats kinda force her to change her hair a bit too, oh and I would never wear a hat to any of my events :P

      Delete
    4. I honestly think she goes out of her way to not have it be about her clothes and she sticks with a handful of looks that she likes.

And if I recall correctly, the black Temperley dress she wore last year didn't get rave reviews (at least here...lol) because many people (myself included) didn't think it was a very formal evening look.

Marci, yes AOA helps "people suffering from a variety of addiction problems including drug and alcohol misuse." Interesting observation. :)

Thank you royalfan. I am so glad she is championing this cause.

And I agree that Kate seems like a very well-grounded woman who knows where in her priorities to place clothes and where to place her relationship to everything else about an event where she is working. Not last on the list by any means, but certainly not first.

    6. Lynn Georgia USA26 October 2014 at 17:41

Right on, Marci! I thought the same thing you did when I saw that table full of wine glasses. As one who has nurtured a couple of close family members through rehab and recovery, I think the presence of wine at the AOA gala sends a very confusing--and potentially damaging--message to both addicts and contributors. While people who do not suffer from addiction can certainly drink alcohol in moderation if they choose, ADDICTS CANNOT. Therefore, I think a charity committed to education and recovery should forego the alcohol at its public functions. (Note: No matter what an addict's substance of choice may be, alcohol is almost always included somewhere in the "mix.") I, for one, would not contribute to this charity because of that one photograph.

    7. Rebecca - Sweden26 October 2014 at 19:50

Lynn, I kind of agree with you. I have no experience with people close to me having addictions but I for one would never drink alcohol in front of them. (Not that I drink alcohol...) It sends the wrong message to serve alcohol (even in the form of wine) at that gala. You can have a glorious party without alcohol. Some kind of fancy non-alco cider maybe? Just seems a little insensitive at least to me....

      Delete
    8. I think she goes out of her way not to outshine brides, but whenever she attends anything people will comment on her outfit.

I know she probably doesn't want us talking about her outfit when she is at certain charities but until she really takes on a cause and decides to champion XYZ we will have just her outfit to nit-pick. We hardly hear her speak and most engagements are pretty short, plus they are few and scheduled quite a part so we don't have "something to talk about" other than the fact that we see her her pretty at ABC event wearing this or that...

      Delete
    9. Anon from Leominster: I absolutely agree with you regarding Catherine seemingly appearing to choose clothes with very similar colours/styles/silhouettes to those she has worn before. Like you, I was also reminded of the blue tweed-style coatdress that she wore on the last day of the Australian tour when I saw her McQueen coatdress the other day (the colour was a little pale) This black 'cocktail' style dress definitely reminded me of others that I think she has worn.

      Delete
    10. If you served a cider, what kind of glass would you serve it in? Does the presence of wine glasses indicate that wine was served in them, or in all of them? Was there perhaps, as often happens, a good choice of beverages? I am allergic to the preservatives in most wines, and I find that there is always a handful of options. No one seems to pay any attention to my sparkling cider and juice and water orders. Since I am not alcoholic, however, I don't know what effect the sight or smell of wine might have on those who are.

  34. I think I'm in agreement with the other on here as well that the dress photographed well inside but outside under flashing cameras it does look like her white bra is showing. But I do believe that it's the nude color lining underneath.
The dress to me doesn't fit well on Kate because she probably bought this dress when she wasn't pregnant and expecting to wear it on the Malta trip.
Also another component on the dress is that it has no zipper and you just slide it on. So if Kate bought this dress in a small and by the looks of it her body is getting thicker a lot faster the second pregnancy. The fabric is going to stretch more than it should and make it photograph strange.

I totally agree with you, Anonymous. "Somehow spooky" was one of my first thoughts, too. It reminds me a little bit of a dress I saw in a fashion magazine (I can´t remember the designer, though) which was black and it had a white skeleton print on it so it looked as if your bones could be seen through the fabric. Kate´s dress really looked much better from the side. And, definitely, the bra looked through when photographed with flashligts.... I love those shoes, though. They look so elegant...
But the most important thing is: she looks healthy and in good spirits!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Charlotte, my thoughts exactly!
I like this dress but I don't think it photographed well at all, the slip looks odd - in some photos it looks like it's just her bra under the dress and not a whole slip up top but I think that's just the slip and the fabric not photographing well. But I liked the edgier, younger look of this piece! Really hope we see this one again!
THIS is how Kate should be dressing instead of the old-lady pastels and lumpy, frumpy tweeds and wools!! THIS is how a 32-year-old aristo mom dresses for a night out at a swank cocktail with A-listers!!
She definitely looks like she's gained more weight at this stage in this pregnancy and that is something I am glad to see.
She's looking a bit better in this photo, less strained and definitely less sick than she did the other day.
I also wonder if the plethora of engagements is being scheduled, in part, so that the Cambridges' annual winter migration to Mustique and/or Maldives can be made without too much criticism from the press and public? They've only got a few months between now and the January/February time when they usually go, so not a lot of time to get Kate back out and working.

    2. "Even for a commoner?" My goodness. Well you might chase down some pics of the "blood princesses" Beatrice and Eugenie. And "serious" jewelry can be worn with just about anything these days. After all, this IS a dressy black cocktail dress.

      --------
May be it has some co relation with the subjects of the cause. Rockers, the 80s and some have commented "spooky". Part of the reason I follow Kate is, there is an artistically practical side to her that fits place and time. Except it did not photograph well in outdoor flash light, it is an interesting change and definitely memorably much less boring ( means the likelihood one remembers the cause too).

My first post here, please be nice :).

I actually have to disagree with the commenters who believe we're seeing the slip and not the outline of her bra. If you look at the top row of cutouts (below her collarbones/above her bust) it's the same lighter "flesh" colour as the rest of the cutouts armoured by the slip/lining. The cutouts on her arms and at the very bottom of the dress (where you can see the slip ends) are clearly showing her much darker actual skin.

I think with both the outer material being mesh, and the slip/lining being a very thin rayon or silk the material on top of her undergarments are thin & clingy enough to at least show the hard edges of the her bra through the top two materials. And I also think her bra may be much lighter in colour than the slip/lining in order to show through so clearly.

I don't actually care, I'm mostly American and I actually lean toward liking the dress over all. I just wish the "nude" lining were actually a bit darker to match her tan, it looked a little obvious to me.

Most of the time I prefer her in conservative clothes, but tonight I think she hit it just right. This dress was not rocker-chic as some posters have stated. It just has some style to it! She looked great, and most important, healthy.

I personally thought the coat dress she wore to greet the Singaporeans was far too matronly and not flattering at all.

Hello sassy black dress! Kate looks beautiful! It's so good to see her feeling well and looking great! The dress.... It's definitely not a favorite, but Kate looked great in it. The style was lovely, but the design was hmmm. I actually liked her hair down and thought it looked lush and beautiful. Your never fully dressed without a smile and Kate's smile was radiant. She really looks great after being so very ill. I do love that she was well enough to do 3 engagements in 2 days and that there were no wardrobe repeats. Woohoo! I suppose the maternity wear will surface soon and I am looking forward to seeing what Kate wears.

Have a question for Charlotte. Kate's necklace/earrings she wore with her blue JP dress - do you think those were a gift or can the Royal's borrow jewellery? I also wonder who would pay for Kate's clothes and if she would have an allowance.

    1. Hello!

I think the Monica Vinader jewels were most likely a gift from William or her parents. Kate's wardrobe is paid for by Prince Charles through his official household budget.

      Delete
    2. Cannot Kate buy her own jewelry? William inherited a fortune from his mother and Kate's wealthy parents most likely gave her a trust fund. Thus, the Cambridges are now wealthy in their own right. Sure, they've got wealthy parents who can buy things for them - but that doesn't mean Kate can't pay for things she likes and wants - not everything has to be a gift.

  57. I think she should try her dresses in the right light, she is going to be photograph a lot and it is not the first time this has happened to her (bra showing- and its a bra you can see the line of it in her profile photo). In her first gala with William you can see her white bra clearly also at the unveiling of her portrait. The problem with some dark and light weight fabrics it is that even if you are wearing flesh colored underwear its going to show.

  58. Hi Charlotte
thank you and everyone who commented on my visit to my gran yesterday. I showed her your comments tonight and she was thrilled. She's never used a computer so she's blown away by the idea that people on the other side of the word are interested in what she had to say.
She liked this Temperley dress & said the silhouette reminds her of the knitted dresses that were popular in the 1970s.

Blue Wren, I read your comment yesterday while in the car shuffling my kiddos around and wanted to reply. First, praying for your Gran as she is not well and hoping she's on the mend soon. I absolutely loved her thoughts and comments. It's nice to hear comments from someone who saw and experienced the Queen in her younger years as Princess Elizabeth and those first few years after her reign began. What she said made me think of the exhibition currently at Kensington Palace, Fashion Rules. They focus on the Queen's fashion through the 50's. She definitely was a style icon back in the day. Norman Hartnell did a fabulous job designing for the Royal family and dressing the Queen. There's a peach, strapless, silk gown on display that he designed that is absolutely gorgeous. She must have looked stunning. It was interesting to see the exhibition this past summer and it gives us a small glimpse on the young Elizabeth as a elegant and sophisticated, but also sexy young lady.

I thought her comments on the Queen's critics was interesting also. I have always wondered how it was received by the press and the public when she left her children for long periods and was in Malta with Prince Phillip. Very interesting. As your Gran said, Kate's only been doing this for 3 1/2 years. She has just begun and has a lifetime of Royal duties and engagements ahead of her. The other Senior Royals have done this their entire life. I wish Kate's critics would think about this. I think she's a fabulous ambassador for Britain and has done a great job in her role.

Tell your Gran thank you for her insight. I would love to hear more from her! :)

  59. I like it! I think she looks amazing. Definitely not a dress I'd see in the store and try on myself LOL looks better on then on the hanger but she pulled it off. I cant wait to see her again.

  60. I really like the dress. The model looks great (especially paired with the booties), actually better than Kate and this is rare, because most EVERYONE ends up looking better than the models (sorry, models are not all that pretty, especially not when modeling).

The dress is pretty but the execution actually went wrong.

The dress is edgy and Kate tried to "tone that done" or "dress it up" with her bow belt, her clutch, her personality and the earrings and while she looked lovely I think it took away from the dress' "personality".

I also thought that perhaps it didn't have the best material - the black material should not be such light-weight cotton-blend yarn. I'm thinking a heavier black material was in order. You should see the nude slip and skin under all the panels but you should not see them THROUGH THE BLACK MATERIAL. The slip should have also been a better quality so as not to be able to exactly define the undergarments. Even on the close up next to the model - with NO FLASH and selling the product - you can see through the black :( not good! So I blame it all on the quality of the fabric/material.

The other thing is I Kate has gained weight and perhaps is also stretching the fabric more than at the time of purchase, making the black sections even more see through.

I read somewhere that this dress goes perfectly on JENNIFER LAWRENCE and I think she and Kristen Stewart would totally go with this dress' personality. They would look awesome.

I don't think Kate wore the wrong undergarments or that she purposely wore a see through dress (actually read that in a Spanish magazine)

Still, I like it on Kate. Again I am liking something that the majority don't like. I'm glad she opted for something a bit edgy. I think she would have looked great with a smokey eye and a high ponytail, maybe even some booties? but then I don't know if the dress would have been appropriate for the event :/

  64. I said she'll feel much better if she went out. The body is stronger and resilient than we as humans are conditioned to believe. If u keep telling someone their ill the physiological mind tells them so and they become downhearted.

The Duchess was a bit nervous at first during the state visit, u could tell, but as she got through it she got better and better. I can just imagine the Queen telling her to get on with it and put duty first as the royall always do. The royal family never cancel engagements.

The Duchess evening appearanceso have been sensational. The Duchess looks amazing and she looks happy. She needn't be nervous. The public love her. She's fabulous looking. A modern princess

It now seems blogger is enforcing word verification for unregistered comments. I apologise for this inconvenience and hope it is a temporary arrangement.

Also, due to this there's been issues with comments not coming in and going to the spam folder. I'll check this out and try to find as many as I can.

Charlotte, what is an unregistered comment? Does that mean anonymous? I always sign my name, so not sure. Should I do something differently or are the issues on the blogger end? So sorry for all the questions. I'm not a "techy" person. :(

I think Kate is beautiful regardless of what she wears. I do like this dress...very cool and stylish, age appropriate (did anyone notice how well it blended in with the tablecloths?) and she just looks like the picture of health and FUN. I know these events must get to be routine and maybe even somewhat boring. Glad to see she is shaking things up in this sassy dress!

  69. Thank the sweet baby Jesus she wore something age-appropriate!! Hooray for Kate! Other than the white bra, which is a snafu every lady makes at some point in her life, she looked healthier than she's looked in quite some time and finally looked her age. Yay!

  70. No bra at all. If you look carefully, you can see a shadow under the upper slash, in contrast with a clear spot with an effect very like to the upper pseudo-bra: but no bra, as far as I know this kind of object, has a similar shape. In the last picture (just before the one of earrings) you can see the opposite effect, as she was wearing a BLACK bra.

In one of the pictures her bra looks black. I think the flash of the cameras created the "white" look. I don't think Kate would do such a thing intentionally. At least not while on duty! The Duchess looks gorgeous...all the time, in my opinion!

So, the dress wasn't a favorite on the night of the engagement, but after seeing pics of it over the past couple days, it's growing on me a little. I saw a full length front shot of Kate from a distance and the dress looked good. I also love the scoop back. :)

    1. yikes, good thing she is wearing a black bra :P
Princess Mary is kinda the perfect princess. I love her style. I think she is the best dressed (too bad she isn't covered much in the US). I recently found out about her stylist and I think that woman is a genius.

Anyway, in Mary's case with a black top it's kind of difficult to know it will be so see through when photographed.

In Kate's case, I think they chose the wrong material for the dress. Even the close-up picture next to the model is horribly see through. I think this dress needed a thicker black material because you are supposed to see nude in some of the panels but should not see NUDE/through under the black sections of the dress.

I don't think Kate should have gotten so much criticism for this dress. I think it's a thumbs down for Temperly.

    2. Beatrix, I do love Mary's style and no one, but no one, recycles better than she does. She is brilliant at giving a dress/skirt/top a totally different look by changing accessories, hairstyles, etc.

And if I may ask, where did you read about her stylist? I'd be very interesting in learning more if you wouldn't mind sharing the source.... :)

Saw this quite interesting article about when the spouses of heirs or regents the last ~15 years did their first solo engagements without their spouse or other royal family member.

    http://lux-arazzi.blogspot.de/2014/10/stephanies-first-solo-engagement.html

Kate was like 3-4 fastest out doing solo engagements. Just interesting, I think. What's your thoughts?
