New Portrait of Prince George + Kate in M Missoni for Meade Wedding

We have plenty of new photos to share beginning with a beautiful new family portrait of William, Kate, George and Lupo. The Mother's Day portrait was taken at a window of Apartment 1A at Kensington Palace by award-winning photographer Jason Bell, who also took Prince George's official christening photos.

It's a natural, tender portrait showing a very happy family. It depicts eight-month-old George, wearing a rather adorable blue jumper (reportedly a gift from Prince Charles) with his moniker emblazoned on it, gazing at Lupo. We can see he has light brown hair and eyebrows. The little Prince is held by his adoring mother whilst a beaming William looks towards the camera.

The Duchess recycled her Temperley London Rodeo Blouse. She first wore the ivory shirt at the Calgary Stampede during the Canada tour in 2011. The sheer pieces feature pleating on the shoulders, a ruffled placket and extended cuffs. It originally retailed for £455.

This was a surprise treat indeed, as we hadn't expected to see any new photos of George before the tour. I think you'll agree, he's a cutie :)

************

We do love an unexpected Kate appearance and were delighted to see photos of The Duchess of Cambridge attending the wedding of friends Lucy Meade and Charlie Budgett in Marshfield, Gloucestershire today.

Kate was accompanied by Princes William and Harry. The trio were all smiles upon arrival.

The bride Lucy Meade is the sister of James Meade, one of Prince William's closest friends from Eton and his second best man at the royal wedding in 2011, after which he reportedly gave a very memorable speech. When James married last year William, Harry and Pippa attended whilst pregnant Kate remained at home. Their father, Richard Meade, is the first British rider to have won an Olympic gold medal.

Today had been tipped as as a possibility for a George appearance among royal watchers, however I didn't expect William and Kate would take the eight-month-old. It's very much a special day for the couple and undoubtedly the royals were conscious the focus should remain on Lucy and Charlie. Not to mention the possibility of George crying during the ceremony.

A number of William, Kate and Harry's closest friends were in attendance, including George's godmother Emilia Jardine-Paterson who is expecting her own baby later this year.

Kate recycled a selection of popular items for the wedding today. This is something Her Royal Highness frequently does when attending weddings, again to ensure the focus remains on the bride and not her sartorial choices. Readers will recognise Kate's M Missoni tweed coat from a 2012 visit to Fortnum & Mason and again that year for a trip to Nottingham.

The understated piece was an excellent choice for the wedding. So much so, another wedding guest had the same idea and wore the coat, too. I imagine smiles were exchanged between Kate and the guest upon realisation they were wearing the same garment.

Kate wore her Whistles Bella Dress underneath; she was first photographed wearing it at the London 2012 Olympic Closing Ceremony.

PA/Whistles

Kate accessorised with her Lock & Co. Fairy Tale hat. It's one of her nicest hats, and I can see why she wears it so often.

Kate wore her trusty Episode 'Angel' Shoes.

And completed the look with her Mulberry clutch and Cassandra Goad earrings.

It was wonderful to see the royals, who are no doubt busy with last minute preparations for their upcoming tour of New Zealand and Australia. Seeing them attend weddings together has been something of a staple in appearances for years now. I liked Kate's look; it hit all the right notes.

We leave you with a photo of the beautiful bride and her father.

A very Happy Mother's Day to all the mother's out there! It will be a very special day for Kate, her first as a mum.

I agree Mellie. I'd have liked to see his face.

I suspect someone was out of shot dangling a treat or something for Lupo to look so alert!

Omg that photo of George is beyond adorable!!! He is too cute, I see a strong resemblance to Kate. They make a very very cute family!!!
I'm happy they released a photo of George before the upcoming tour. There was a lot of speculation(especially on this wonderful blog ) if they would and I'm glad they didn't disappoint.
Kate looked lovely attending their friends wedding as well.

(I experienced the same thing at my stepson's wedding, with another guest wearing the same dress I was wearing. I immediately went over to the other woman and complimented her on her great taste. ;o)

SO looking forward to the tour. I know you'll be putting in many hours, Charlotte, so thank you in advance for all the fantastic posts we'll be reading soon!

  7. Oh the amount of cuteness in this article! Georgie, Lupo, and the bride's father :) He looks like a loving father! I was under the impression that Mother's Day is the second Sunday in May, so I was thinking that they were really early lol. I just read that Mother's Day is on different days in different countries, didn't know that! Lovely article Charlotte and you are so quick!

Mothering Sunday in the UK is a centuries old tradition for mid-Lent Sunday.
Young people in service used to be allowed to visit their Mums and take a simnel cake.
The day remains the same---just the traditions have altered.

  13. Great post as always! I so love the fact that Kate dressed as plainly as possible to avoid pulling attention away from the bride. That is very kind. She almost looks under-dressed for a wedding next to husband and brother-in-law in morning coats! It reminds me of when Princess Diana wore an awful outfit to Andrew and Sarah Ferguson's wedding - I thought "ouch" that is not attractive! However, I think Diana did not want to over-shadow the bride. Looking forward to your posts while the Duke and Duchess are on their trip!

  16. Such an absolutely cute family picture! George obviously loves his Lupo. I like it that his parents now and then release an informal photo. Thanks for posting it, Charlotte.

Even though it's amusing to turn up in the same thing, and ladies dressed alike do compliment each other's great taste, I expect Kate will gravitate more and more to one of a kind garments. She is probably not as bothered as Jackie Kennedy, who informed her designer that she did not want to see her dresses on anyone else. But Kate will want to be distinctive as she gains years and royal position, and we no doubt will see her more and more in custom designs. I do like the blue coat on her, and the dress looked very nice at the Olympics. Perhaps she wore it unbelted this time, which would also suit its drape.

Happy Mother's Day to all you British mothers! You deserve a special celebration.

  17. What a lovely family portrait! Kudos to the photographer, Jason Bell. The open window becomes a perfect frame with the rugged window sill and brick facade. They all look so happy! Charlotte, you have a very good eye! You noticed the tiniest detail of Kate's blouse and identified it as one she has worn before. I would love to know where they found little George's light blue jumper. It's adorable! It may have been a gift from someone.

Who wore it better? Kate of course! She looks much more "put together" than the other wedding guest who wore the same coat. The other woman's shoes were totally wrong for that coat, if I do say so myself. It could easily happen again since Kate's clothes are designer "off the rack" and available to anyone who can afford them.

    3. Daisy, I agree those shoes were totally wrong to wear with that coat. She had on summer strappy sandals and a winter coat. That's a big fashion don't. Perhaps her dress underneath was pink and she was trying to match but if so it would have looked better if she wore a closed toe high heel or even a peep toe pump.

    4. Lovely family treat, George left a little mysterious for us, great!!!
The wedding outfit on the other hand reminds her polka dot disaster, this coat fits a business trip but not a wedding, I like the hat but with a different coat, also her earrings do not match anything. For her thrifty side she deserved this fashion accident with the other girl, probably she spent the hell of a lot of money for the tour outfits. Blue27

    5. I more and more become to think that the Duchess does this sort of thing (seemingly picking out an outfit without too much effort) at others weddings with a purpose. So far I haven't seen any "wow" outfit of her when attending to her friends' weddings...She's capable to put together a outstanding ensemble but no at these weddings. Just saying~ :)

  22. As others have said, it's a pity not to see all of George's face in the photo. People have commented elsewhere on the net that the photo looks 'photoshopped'; I am wondering if the image of Lupo came from other photos taken on this occasion. I doesn't look entirely natural the way that George's face is so close to Lupo's. It appears contrived to me. Also, people have commented elsewhere on the deliberate 'washed out' colours in the photo, though the shades look much more vibrant in the 'Daily Mail' picture you've included here. I must remark that when I saw the photo on the television news this evening, I did feel that it was a disappointing photo. It's a good shot of William and Kate, though, and what we see of George, he looks delightful. As I say, it would have been even better to see all of his face. Thanks for your photos of Kate at the wedding, very interesting to see. She recycles her clothes and accessories a lot, and why not? As Diana tended to do, she wears an outfit she has previously worn to attend a wedding. Kate looks very slender, her legs are very thin. Lovely photo of the bride.

  23. Daffodils! I hope to see some of those one day; they aren't even showing their tips as the snow slowly fades here. I'm glad Kate gets a touch of spring before she has to leave for a southern autumn. That must be the down side of the tour, although a New Zealand and Australian fall is no doubt lovely.

In any event, the Cambridge family looks happy and healthy...that the only way to be in my opinion.

  28. Love the composition of the family photo. William looks very much like a modern King George V and his cousin Tsar Nicholas II. Put a 'tache and beard on him and wow - uncanny. Lupo looks shell shocked, like he doesn't entirely trust that baby and William has to help Lupo out occasionally - or Lupo may just be focused on a squirrel. (I too, think the baby and dog are uncomfortably close.) As for the wedding photo of Kate - her frame is looking too thin again, much like she did as she prepared to go to Canada. Tweeds adds bulk - so to look so thin in tweed is a bit concerning. Perhaps it is emphasized because the other woman in the identical outfit has a more natural softer figure.

Such a lovely photo of the family. I would doubt that it's photoshopped. A professional photographer will take vast numbers of snaps and will use all manner of tricks with babies and dogs to get the expressions he wants. I'm delighted they're keeping the tradtion of an official photo before the tour.

I recall the charming series of snaps of Diana and Charles with William in her sitting room before the first Australian tour. They were even more informal and showed the warm relationship between mum and child especially.

  38. Simply adorable. With all the splendid backdrops, artwork and furnishings at KP, they chose the perfect spot for the kind of image they most want to portray. Love it! Do I remember correctly that there was a similar one of then-Princess Elizabeth at a window with Charles? Or maybe Charles and Anne?

What fun to get a glimpse of the wedding party and its very special guests! I would be a mix of shocked/embarrassed/thrilled if I had been photographed wearing the same dress as the Duchess at a function. In the proverbial, "Who Wore it Best" comparison ... well, there would be NO comparison.

For this reason, I agree that we'll be seeing more bespoke pieces at high-profile engagements, especially evening ones. Intentional or not, copy-Kating at official functions wouldn't bring the best out of the press.

Happy Mother's Day to our friends across the pond!

Gorgeous George!!!! There's nothing else to say...

Can you imagine being that poor wedding guest who wore the same coat?! I hope she is at least an acquaintance of the Cambridge's circle or the Meades so she is able to laugh it off as something happening among friends/acquaintances. Of course she doesn't stand up to the Duchess-who would ever have expected to be thrust into the limelight like that. Kate is one of those few who can't take a bad picture. Photographers have commented that those people are very rare-apparently, Marilyn Monroe was one of them too.

    1. Hi Canadian Friend,

I too feel bad for the other wedding guest wearing the same coat as Kate. Just from looking at the pictures of her, she doesn't look very happy and is probably sooo embarrassed!! But I have to ask, what was she thinking wearing those purpley, strappy sandals with that coat???

  43. As someone else commented Kate is looking too thin again. It will be disappointing to see her frame so thin as she takes on another tour - it sets just a terrible example for young girls and women around the globe. Her natural frame is not this slender - as seen by her figure pre-engagement - and no one seems to discuss the ramifications of her decisions.

I think they should have released two photos - this one and one where you actually saw George's face. The filters the photographer used are a bit harsh for my liking, but overall a nice photo.

Lupo doesn't look like he really belongs there. William and the Duchess look like let's hurry up and get this over with, to me.

    1. Today I wear hats only for warmth or sun protection. My mother's dress hats were kept in their individual hat boxes, stacked on her upper closet shelf. I would guess royal hats are similarly kept separate, protected with plenty of tissue paper in their boxes.

    2. You just brought back some wonderful memories for me of the rows of hat boxes on my mother's top closet shelf. I kept some of my favorities . My grandaughter and I had a wonderful afternoon trying on and modeling my Mom's hats from the 50's and 60's. Of course, we took pictures.
We have also had jewellery and gloves and shawls afternoons.

    3. I still have a number of my mom's hats and hat boxes, even tho she's been gone many years. The hats have tissue stuffed inside the crown to keep their shape. I occasionally wear one - but mostly to costume parties! Women in the US just don't wear hats very much, except in winter, and then they are knit caps for warmth.
I can't imagine how big Kate's closets must be! - Those hat boxes take up an enormous amount of room.

I like the photo of the whole, and also the fact that they are looking out the window.
I like how they are dressed, with nice soft colors ..
As for the wedding, the look I was not convinced at all ..
I know she doesn't want to overshadow the bride .. but as a future queen must distinguish herself in every way .. and do not even have the same dress as another guest .... very embarrassing
Apart from the coat which is cute but I think more suited to a middle-aged lady .. or a maximum combined with a tight sporty ..
The dress is very nice but a little cheap for the occasion ..

I don't think Lupo was added, unless his head was substituted from another shot to make a better photo, but I finally figured out what bugs me about the photo. The room they are in has been totally blacked out. Is Kate so embarrassed about her purple tinged walls she doesn't want anyone to see them, or is it them not wanting us to see even a bare detail of the room they're in. I vote for they don't want us to see inside.

  53. People seem to think George looks like Kate, but I think he looked like William as an infant. Maybe, now that he is older, I wonder if he still looks like William at the same age, but with Kate's darker coloring.

Why would a wedding guest show up in a coat famously owned and often worn by the Duchess? Of course, she would not know Kate was wearing the coat for the wedding, but rather than be embarrassed, I wonder if she did it to get noticed and possibly photographed. Many celebrities are known for purposely wearing an item which has already been photographed on someone famous, so they can make the "Who Wore it Best" pages. The Big Mystery: an oversight or on purpose!

The bride looks lovely. Best Wishes for many happy years.

  55. I just read on another site that there is a rumor the tour may be postponed, and that an announcement is imminent. Is there anything to this? Would it be because of the search for the Malaysian plane??

    1. Hello!

As far as I know there is no truth at all to the rumour. Perhaps an early April Fool's Day joke? :)

    2. You might be right about April Fool's! A reliable source reported the rumor; of course the facts are yet unknown. William was with the Queen and Prince Philip today at the unveiling of a horse statue in Windsor. That seems a bit unusual, but perhaps the Cambridges spent the weekend at Windsor.

As for photoshopping Lupo, his hair hangs over William's arm in the photo. The angle of his head could have been changed, I suppose, but he was definitely present and surely George was looking at him and probably babbling to Lupo as well.

It was announced a couple of weeks ago that Prince William would be at this event----nothing secret about it.

    4. Was William learning the ropes, so to speak, of unveiling things? Thanks for the information about the event, Jean.

  56. I think the people analyzing the photo have too much time on their hands and I feel sorry for the poor woman who came to a friend's wedding and and ends up being mocked because she has on an ugly coat that the Duchess also owns. Women can be so mean to each other.

We're all so thankful you have enough time on your hands to come and enlighten us all.

We'd be a bit more impressed if you had some cojones and typed in a name.

      BRAVO bluhare! B R A V O! I like your style.

    3. I agree with anonymous. Leave the poor woman in the same coat alone. And it is an ugly coat (say 1991??) but that's not the point - even if it was beautiful, the poor woman should still be left alone.

And bluhare - is that your real name? It's the internet - it doesn't take cojones to type a name as it could be fake. Louise.

    4. Well being female I dont have cojones. I am also convinced that obsessing over a very nice photo of someone eleses family unless you are the photographer is a sign that one has too much time to kill. I am Daisy from Virginia.

    5. Another BRAVO for bluhare!
As a very busy person, Charlotte still finds the time to gather all this info, write her blog, monitor emails and probably a ton of other things I could not even imagine.
She asks so little of her readers. Charlotte clearly states she wants us to stay away from guessing if anyone is pregnant and making remarks about peoples weight. Although, we are able to make comments, with the idea the remarks are not reflective of how much we like v dislike the royal.
Somehow comments are bothering someone who is worried about many of us leaving "the poor lady alone". Perhaps, in the same vein, the poor designer of the "ugly coat" (not my words or opinion) should not be criticized for their professional work.

    6. G. Allyn - There is a difference between an innocent wedding attendee (hence - the leave the poor lady alone) and a professional fashion designer who is creating a piece to be judged (the ugly coat). Granted, the designer is aiming for a work of art, but it is still knowingly put out there for judgement by the world. I don't think you made a very fit comparison.

George is a cutie and I adore Lupo. But I am not a fan of the oversharpened effect of the picture. They have sharpened the life out of Kate and William. But I do like the composition.
As for the wedding pics - I agree with Moxie. It looks like she has gone back to her old weight and seems heavily shrunken. What a shame - she looks so much more beautiful with the extra 10 lbs.

  58. What a delight to see a new picture of George, I just wish he had been turned toward the camera so we could actually see his face.

By the time William was this old, there were several pictures of him and I wish we had that same delight with George.

I'm excited to see pictures of their up coming trip and hope there are many pictures of Prince George as they go.

  59. It looks as if a foreboding black hole is behind them, instead of lights, or a roaring fire, or something to just warm it up. In my opinion, Kate looks stressed (another vacation?) Becoming a new mom, with a demanding husband, all of the staff she now has to supervise, the decorating, wardrobe, nasty newspapers, god-knows who and what else, and a tour. It must be hard to be on your best behavior ALL THE TIME!

    1. I thought Kate looks unusually relaxed in the photo. Amazing what different people can get from photos. I also think objects or furnishings in the background would be distracting. But probably there are also security reasons for not showing the interior of the apartment.

Ditto- unusually relaxed- you hit that exactly right- they both do.

  60. I really like Kate's updo in these wedding photos. Nice twist to her hair in the back.
Is that a scar I see over her ear, under the hair? I seem to remember something about a scar....

    1. That updo and the 2012 tour hairstyle with the pearl hair ornaments, wearing the beautiful white and blue dress are two of my favourites.
Hope this picture doesn't start the great scar debate all over again. I believe it was a surgical scar , possibly from an angioma ....not sure I got that right. I am surprised she ever wears that updo, with all that uproar.
Charlotte, maybe we could have a post just on her hairstyles.

      t) I am surprised she everbwears that updo, after all that uproar.

    2. I recall that the scar is from a childhood accident. The Duchess's spokesperson answered a question about it after a dinner she hosted at Clarence House when it was also visible.

    3. William has a scar, I believe on.his face, from a childhood accident. That is a surgical scar on her head, not a trauma scar. At least says my doctor friend. I did read that there was a birthmark called an angioma removed. I really hope that info wasn't from a tabloid and that they don't pick this pic up and make another big issue out of it.

I remember that scar incident -all kinds of stories about hair extensions - it was put out by Clarence House I think about a childhood accident - I hope that whole mess doesn't start up again. She looks so pretty in all of these photos. Baby is adorable. William is looking pretty handsome too! I hope they are as happy as they appear....or happier!!

As the scar hasn't moved, I think it's safe to say that it isn't a hairpiece. :)

  62. Did anyone see the picture of Jecca at the same wedding in the Daily Mail: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2592424/Awkward-moment-woman-pictured-wearing-coat-Duchess-Cambridge-friends-wedding.html. If you scroll down - she's in the red dress with the navy coat. Now THAT is an outfit that screams fashion. Love it.
