Kate Dazzles with Papyrus Tiara for White-Tie Reception

As we mentioned in tonight's earlier post, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended their first white-tie function tonight. And yes, Kate wore a tiara :)

William and Kate attended the annual Diplomatic Reception, hosted by The Queen at the Palace Ballroom, Buckingham Palace. Their Royal Highnesses met the heads of all 172 missions in the UK.

The couple arrived at tonight's event in a chauffeur-driven Bentley for the reception which is one of the largest and most glittering events on the royal calendar. It was an incredibly surprising appearance as it had been widely reported the couple would not attend a white-tie event until at least 2014 and no doubt it was a delightful treat for guests at the reception. It is further evidence the Duke and Duchess are making the transition to become full-time royals and taking on additional duties within the Royal Family.

At 36.6m long and 18m high, the Ballroom is the largest multi-purpose room in Buckingham Palace. It was opened in 1856 with a ball to celebrate the end of the Crimean War. Today, it is used by The Queen for state banquets and other formal occasions such as tonight's Diplomatic Reception, attended by 1,500 guests.

PA

You can watch a video from the 1992 Diplomatic Reception at Youtube (with thanks to Trisha). The Prince and Princess of Wales was in attendance that year. As you'll see Diana looked amazing in a strapless white gown and jewels. The lavish affair is a very glamorous event, and it's a pity we don't see more photos and videos from inside.

It is the first time Kate has worn a tiara since she wore the Cartier Halo Tiara for the royal wedding in 2011.

The British Monarchy

Tonight The Queen loaned the Duchess the Papyrus tiara, also known as the Lotus Flower Tiara.

The beautiful tiara belonged to The Queen Mother, after it was made from one of her wedding gifts in 1923; a necklace of a Greek key pattern with pendant diamonds and pearls given by her husband, the future George VI.

Royal Order of Sartorial Splendor

Garrard jewellers dismantled it and created the Papyrus tiara instead. As you can see, it is a very delicate tiara of fanned motifs crowned by floating diamond arches and studded with two pearls at the base and a central top pearl.

Royal Order of Sartorial Splendor

Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother pictured as Duchess of York wearing the tiara.

Royal Order of Sartorial Splendor/The Royal Collection

The Queen mother gave the tiara to her daughter Princess Margaret, in 1959, before she married Antony Armstrong-Jones. It became one of her most frequently worn tiaras during her younger years.

The Royal Forums

Margaret loaned the tiara to her new daughter-in-law Serena Stanhope, who wore it at her wedding to Viscount Linley in 1993. When Princess Margaret died in 2002, it would appear it was returned to the vault until tonight, when The Queen decided to loan it to her granddaughter-in-law The Duchess of Cambridge.

Royal Order of Sartorial Splendor

It has always been a popular piece and many royal watchers will be delighted to see it again. I expect it will remain Kate's 'go-to' tiara for some time and will serve her well in the coming years. It looked exquisite on her, didn't it? She complemented it by wearing her hair half up-half down.

Kate accessorised with The Queen's diamond chandelier earrings, which she was previously loaned for a BAFTA reception in Los Angeles in 2011.

Kate's lace gown is a bespoke Alexander McQueen piece.

It was reported the Palace will not release any photos from inside the reception. What did you think of the tiara? :)

The Duke and Duchess will attend the premiere of Mandela on Thursday. We'll see you then!

  4. I've noticed Kate has no bags under her eyes as usual. Do you know how to do it? I don't think it is only the matter of the make up. I ask because sometimes I'd like to get rid of mine ones. She looks so fresh.

    1. I struggle with bags too, I've found that steeping two green tea bags, letting them cool, and then placing them on my eyes for 10-15 minutes when I have the time to makes a big difference, something about the caffeine! And you get to enjoy the cup of tea :) Lightly massaging under the eyes with the tips of your ring fingers (the weakest ones) when applying daily moisturizer helps too!

    2. Photoshop. Kate still has the bags. The photo agencies just edit them (and some lines, etc.) out before publishing the pictures.

    3. OMG why do you people have to always bring up the bags under her eyes. My god she has a 4 month old baby that what has been written does not sleep much. If you are a parent then you would underatand.

Why can't you just say something nice about how beautiful the Duchess look's tonight. And finally we get to see her in a tiara.

The original poster asked for tips to help camouflage hers. How about YOU be a bit more positive in YOUR posts instead of slagging others? Are you the anonymous who always has to slam someone (haters or whathaveyou) in every post? As if you'd ever admit it as you have to hide behind Anonymous.

Sorry to everyone else, but that just really hit me the wrong way today.

      Delete
    8. Hmm. I'm not quite sure why anyone would expect her to look vastly different with a tiara on. After all, we've seen her in one before, at her wedding. I can't think when I've thought any woman in a tiara looked spectacularly different from the way she usually does, except that she's got some sparkle on her head. As for whether she's "average," the Duchess isn't a knockout beauty, but she makes the most of what she has, and of course the average woman doesn't have the access to the hairstyling, clothes, and jewelry that she enjoys, so she never really looks "average". Still, as with most other women, I don't think donning a tiara is ever really going to make a great change in her appearance, and I wouldn't have expected it to do so.

    10. @anonymous 14:18 I'm the one who made the original comments about Kate and stand by them. Why is it that when someone always critiques Kate's appearance people or rather women always have to assume that the person saying them are ugly. Kate is not the most beautiful woman in the world why is that hard to acknowledge, there are plenty of everyday beautiful women out there as myself. I've been approached numerous times by modeling agencies so I do not think any of the commenters here need to stop and look at themselves. They're all beautiful some more than Kate.

      Delete

Hold on, Anonymous 00:07! I thought I was the only one gorgeous enough to criticize Kate on this blog!!

      Delete
    12. I think, Anonymous, that you undercut your own argument -- previously perfectly solid -- by feeling the need to claim that you are so beautiful that you've been "approached numerous times" by modeling agencies.

That sort of thing is precisely the way to cause people to snigger and to stop taking you seriously.

I'm sure that if you stop to think about it at some length -- several days, at minimum -- you will figure out why.

      Delete
    13. Vittoria I stand by everything that I say. I don't have to "claim" anything. I'm free to say whatever I would like within reason on this blog. Why am I not allowed to state something about myself. I used myself as an example. Not to prove a point but just as an example. My argument is still as it stands and you've further proven it. Women always undercut other woman over the smallest things. So I'm not allowed to say that I'm beautiful because it looks bad but if I say Kate is average people go into a tizzy over it. Makes no sense. I always see women on this blog seemingly putting other women down whenever they critique Kate's appearance and make it seem as if every other woman on this blog is somehow inferior to Kate in looks. I was just stating that there are so many beautiful women on here and in real life and to not feel less of yourself if you make a comment and someone criticizes you for it.

      Delete
    14. I agree with Anon. It is such a shame that women here can't accept different opinions. If you start a sentence with "the beautiful princess" you win their sympathy otherwise this is what you get:-(

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Merely the level of formality in dress, for the most part. The actual behavior isn't necessarily any different, not these days.

"White tie" means men wear white tie (and often decorations) and ladies wear long dresses and tiaras, if they own them. They will wear decorations, too, if they have them.

"Black tie" is formal but doesn't require decorations or for ladies to wear long dresses and tiaras. It's much more flexible, so if the hosts have some particular dress for ladies in mind (long or short), they must be specific. Tiaras really are not appropriate with black tie these days.

    2. From Wikipedia: The Royal Family Order of Queen Elizabeth II is an honour bestowed as a mark of personal esteem on female members of the British Royal Family for personal service to Queen Elizabeth II. The Order is awarded in two versions [1] (or classes), one version is bigger than the other one. It is not automatically awarded and there is no public announcement of the honour. Usually the only way it can be known if it has been awarded is by viewing photos or film from State Visit banquets or other formal similar evening occasions requiring the wearing of honours and awards. Currently the First Class Order has been given to Princess Anne, Camilla Duchess of Cornwall and Sophie, Countess of Wessex. Second Class order has been given to Princess Alexandra, and the Duchesses of Gloucester and Kent. More on it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Family_Order_of_Queen_Elizabeth_II

  36. Charlotte! Well, well done you for the speedy photos and great information. I loved seeing our Duchess in a tiara and really liked all the historical info you shared! As Mellie said, the Papyrus tiara must have sentimental value for the Queen, as it was her mother's and sister's. Perhaps I'm reading too much into this, but I doubt the Queen would loan this tiara to someone with whom she wasn't pleased. I also think the chandelier earrings are a perfect complement to this tiara.

    3. Diana wore only two tiaras. One belonged to the Spencer family, the other was Queen Mary's Lover's Knot tiara. The Spencer tiara is owned and controlled by Diana's brother Earl Spencer and occasionally appears on Spencer brides. I agree with those who say the Lover's Knot won't be worn any time soon.

I think it is likely that Prince Charles controls the jewels that belonged to the Queen Mother. They were inherited by the Queen, but seemingly placed at Charles's disposal for his wife, and evidently for his daughters in law. The exceptions are crown pieces and a few brooches that the Queen claimed and now wears. Legally, the Queen Mother's jewels are the Queen's, and so the Palace can say she loans them to Camilla and Catherine. Whether this indicates any special favor, I am not sure. They simply need appropriate jewels for royal occasions.

      Delete
    4. Just a thought...maybe the Queen gives royal ladies a couple of tiaras to pick from with the idea that it will become their "go-to" piece. I say that because pearls were Diana's favorite so I don't think it's a coincidence that she wore the Lover's Knot tiara. And she was very proud to wear the Spencer tiara because it represented HER ancestry.

  37. The tiara and flat hair and the crown aren't wonderful, but it is a beautiful piece and sign of the Queen's favor, my surmise. Kate's dress looks regal and pretty, what we can see of it. They both look grand.

  41. Think it's a shame that the royal family didn't release at least one official photo. Maybe that's not the way it has been done before, although there have certainly have been photos released of some private palace parties. Even so, the first appearance of the future heir and his wife at a white tie event is historic and worth at least a single posed photo.

The palace by this time should have learnt its lesson about things that "weren't done in the past". (Including heirs marrying middle class girls.) The world is changing and tcertain allowances to the new will help preserve the traditions of the past. The palace needs to keep changing with the times.

Much better to show off how beautiful Kate undoubtably looked and how handsome William did than a couple of lousy car photos of both of them looking quite tense, Kate even a bit frightened. Shown to adventage, I think her hairstyle would be wonderful with a tiara and people would realize what an asset this couple will make to the royal scene.

  46. Yay!!! So happy she finally wore a tiara! If they allowed a video the 1992 reception, why not just one little photo for us ;) at least we got the car shot. Would love to see the dress.
If I was kate, if probably wear a tiara every day just because I could.

Love the tiara; matter of fact I like it a lot better than the one she was lent for the wedding. As it wasn't a public event and we don't have proper photos I'm not going to moan about her lack of a total updo. Which I would have if we had full length shots. :)

  48. In my mind when I picture the whole effect on Catherine, she looks great! I'm sure that for such an occasion, the dress was perfectly tailored for her and looked wonderful. Now we know why she finally went in and had everything done at the salon.

I actually like the original greek key necklace better than the subsequent lotus flower motif of the tiara and think it would have been even prettier, but that was the QM's doing. I suppose it's a reflection of the era.

  49. Thanks for the excellent post, Charlotte! Any speculation about whether or not Kate wore long gloves with her gown?

  50. At last, a tiara!! I love it. The tiara is stunning, and the dress seems very appropriate too. It seems these two are really becoming full-time royals sooner than later, so it's excellent news for us Kate/royal watchers :) What a wonderful way to begin the festivities of Christmas season, I love this time of the year! :)
    Hugs!

  51. I have nothing to say about these pictures other than that they were distinctly underwhelming to me.

I thought that it was interesting that Niraj Tanna was the only photographer besides Mark Stewart who had pictures of them entering the palace. Why so ? Care to speculate anyone ? Tanna is still Kate and William's go-to photographer, then ? How interesting.

I also thought it was interesting when Camilla, less than 2 weeks ago gave an interview on Charles (around his birthday) where she went on an on, on how her husband was not one to relax or chill and must be working all the time. I thought that it was a highly strategic move. After all, these interviews are coached months in advance and nothing comes out of one's mouth that one does not want to put out there.

    Thoughts, people ?

Now that you mention the lack of photographers, I do recall seeing somewhere that the Queen had asked for no photos of people entering and leaving the reception.

I'd be careful putting things like that on this blog. Some people get a bit worked up.

    3. LM, I totally agree...100%... regarding the birthday interview. She is very shrewd and nothing is said or done by her, or on her behalf, without considering long term dividends. And IMO, the more we see William and Kate taking on royal duties, the more PR we will see from Clarence House.

royalfan, do you really think Camilla was taking a passive aggressive jab at WC? I guess I'd be surprised that they'd let something like that slip as it would show there's less than a united front.

And in a prior thread someone said something about how the royals probably don't curtsey to each other in private. They actually do, and they take it very seriously, which is why the Queen had to issue a revised order of precedence after Kate married William. Apparently some royal women didn't like having to curtsey to her. The Queen also revised it when Charles married Diana because Anne didn't want to curtsey to her.

I was also surprised at Camilla's interview. And I agree that it must have been a calculated move. Charles was famous for resenting Diana's popularity. Who knows how he really feels about Kate's. I think I've mentioned before.. but what I'm *really* interested in knowing is how Charles' sons feel about their history and what their real relationship with Charles is like. Such a complex family but such a delicious study, I have to say.

As for Tanna.. well.. the less said the better. Clearly, he is a key member.

    6. LM, very interesting comments.
I've read continuing stories for some time - and dating in some form or fashion to before William and Kate were married - that there is no love lost between Camilla and Kate, and, one would presume, William as well.
William, of course, recalls the pain Camilla caused his mother so I'm sure that continues to be an issue at least for him.
Camilla has widely been reported at various times as being dismissive and critical of William's and Kate's lack of royal duties and particularly Kate's lack of a full-time royal schedule.
I know nobody gives credence to any stories critical of William and Kate but, as with so many things, there seems to be a thread of truth in the same basic story that has been repeated for several years, that there is some sort of tension between Camilla and Kate.
By all accounts, Charles is said to adore Kate and has welcomed her to the family and I'm also sure that may not sit well with Camilla.
I'm sure Kate's instant and enormous popularity for (forgive me here but I'm trying to make a point) doing not much more than smiling and dressing well, has to bring back memories of Diana and her popularity, before and, especially, AFTER the breakup. The media largely fell to Diana's side and Camilla was not portrayed well in the UK press at all. The presence of another young, beautiful woman with great fashion sense who is popular with the people and the media, not to mention married to the son of her longtime rival, can't be all welcome news for Camilla.
Camilla is EXTREMELY shrewd. She knows how the PR and media game is played. She knows that William is FAR more popular than Charles. Charles has a well-known reputation for extravagance and for being rather arrogant and demanding.
So, it doesn't hurt for Camilla to paint the picture of Charles as a hardworking, dedicated royal at the same time that William is now no longer working as an RAF pilot and seems to be at rather loose ends, without a defined position or full-time royal duties, Kate hasn't worked noticeably since late May, AND they just moved into a multimillion-dollar refurbished Kensington Palace residence.
I've read enough accounts to know that life behind the scenes in the royal family isn't all the smiley-smiley, laugh-laugh for the cameras that it appears when the cameras are rolling.
I think those of us who experienced the Diana era certainly learned that lesson the hard way. If we seem cynical here or not quite ready to swallow the spoon-fed "fairy tale life" that the royal PR flacks are trying to feed, it's because we realize there's a lot more going on than the photos show.
Really wish there had been better photos of both Kate's walk in Kensington Gardens and the arrival at the reception.

    7. I'm sorry, but the clear evidence is that the Duchesses of Cornwall and Cambridge actually get along quite well. It's best not to pay attention to tabloid reports. They make things up and have a vested interest in manufacturing melodramatic soap-opera style conflict. Obviously life in the royal family is not perfect, nor should anyone expect it to be, but I think you've fallen for the Globe version of what goes on behind the palace walls. It is no more realistic than the rosy fairy-tale version.

Ally, I was told by another poster on another thread that a compliment from me is like getting a kiss through the veil of a smiling assassin. It really surprises me that my opinions mean so much to others. *shrugs*
