William and Kate Attend Mandela Première, Nelson Mandela Passes Away

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge walked the red carpet at the Leicester Square UK première of Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, this year's Royal Film Performance.

The couple stepped out for one of just a few joint engagements they are undertaking at the moment. It has been suggested William and Kate wish to arrange their appearances this way to enable them to visit more organisations and to ensure one of them is with little George as often as possible.

William and Kate waved to onlookers who were incredibly excited to see the royals.

Royal correspondent Victoria Murphy shared a photo of the red carpet arriving earlier today.

And CNN'S David Wilkinson shared a photo of the finished look before the stars arrived.

Before the performance, Their Royal Highnesses met members of the film's cast and crew including the star of the movie, Idris Elba. UK readers will be familiar with Mr. Elba from his title role in Luther while those across the pond may have seen him in The Wire. The talented actor's performance has critics suggesting he may be a strong contender for next year's Academy Award for Best Actor. The couple also met actress Naomie Harris and the movie's director Justin Chadwick.

Idris Elba and Naomie Harris both looked every inch the leading man and lady on the red carpet. Ms. Harris wore a dress by one of Kate's favourite brands, Alexander McQueen.

Speaking about meeting William and Kate, Idris Elba said:

'Tonight is extra special because this is my country and when the royals come out to watch a film it's a big deal.'

William and Kate spoke with Nelson Mandela's daughter Zindzi Mandela who, along with her father and members of their family, helped film makers create an accurate portrait of the iconic leader.

The movie, which is released in the UK on 3 January, is said to be one of the must see productions of the year. The epic motion picture spans Mandela's extraordinary life, from his childhood through to his inauguration as president of South Africa. I'm very much looking forward to viewing it; will you see it?

It has smashed box office records in South Africa and received a special screening in The White House, attended by President Barack Obama.

Mandela

Proceeds from the night go to the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund, the leading UK charity for Cinema, Film and TV professionals supporting those in need, and running charity fundraiser events, including the annual Royal Film Performance. This year's film will also raise money for the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund which aims to create a better future for children in South Africa.

Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund

The first Royal Film Performance was in 1946 when King George VI attended the UK première of A Matter of Life and Death and the tradition has continued ever since. From The Queen's appearance at the première of Casino Royale in 2006 to Prince William's solo appearance at The Hobbit last December. As for Kate, many will recall the stunning Temperley London Amoret gown she wore at the War Horse Première in 2011.

Kate brought back the creamy white Roland Mouret 'Lombard' gown she previously wore for an elegant dinner at Claridge's in May 2012. For it's first public outing, Kate wore her hair down with minimal jewellery. Did you prefer tonight's look?

The 'Lombard' is from the designer's 2009 line, it was inspired by actress Carole Lombard. Kate's dress is a bespoke version of the green dress shown below. As you can see it encompasses many of the same element including the high slit, high neckline and defined shoulders.

Style.com

Mr. Mouret spoke about designing the dress with the Duchess last year:

'She's a fantastic person to work with. She's a woman of her time. She's very aware of her position and she's a really nice person. She's human, it's really nice to work with someone in her position. It's historic...yes.'

A look at the back of the dress.

The Duchess wore her hair in a ponytail with a ribbon. It was lovely to see her wear her hair up.

Kate accessorised with a striking statement necklace.

On first look, many of us thought the Duchess was sporting a diamond piece (perhaps Cartier) until WKW FB friend Kristen identified it as a Zara piece. The Sparkly Bead Crystal Necklace retails for merely £20, however it is sold out on the US site. No doubt it will prove a popular stocking filler this year.

Zara

Ashley Marie identified Kate's clutch as the Mulberry Bayswater in black suede.

The item retails for £495 and remains available in a selection of colours. It is an ultra-slim clutch with the versatility of a classic wallet. Inside there is a compact but carefully organised space, with slip and zip pockets and slots for cards, cash, tickets and receipts. Below we see it in black soft grain.

Mulberry

Kate's black suede shoes are by Prada (with thanks to WWKD). The round toe pumps are made in Italy and feature leather insole and lining, leather outsole, low-cut vamp and 4 1/4 inch covered high heel. They're available for €507 at Neiman Marcus.

You can watch a video from the event at Youtube.

The night of the première coincides with the terribly sad news Nelson Mandela has passed away, aged 95. South African president Jacob Zuma said "He passed on peacefully surrounded by his family tonight. Our nation has lost it's greatest son. Our people have lost a father. Although we knew this day would come, nothing can diminish our sense of profound and enduring loss". We know two of Nelson Madela's daughters are in London tonight. Our thoughts are with his family and the South African people. R.I.P.

ABC News Twitter Feed

William and Kate were informed of the sad news while they were watching the movie. The audience held a two-minute silence at the end of the movie.  As they left Prince William made a brief statement where he said "I just wanted to say it's incredibly sad and tragic news. We were just reminded what an extraordinary and inspiring man Nelson Mandela was. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. It's very sad". Both the Duke and Duchess looked visibly moved by the tragic news. You can watch a video of William's statement at ITV News.

Photographers noted they both sombre as they left.

Tomorrow Kate will visit Shooting Star Hospice!

    1. I disagree I think the sleek and chic ponytail looks gorgeous and not so stilted as a more fancy updo would. I think she always looks gorgeous and do love her look tonight as well. Maybe after wearing the priceless tiara she was wanting to wear a more "everyday" necklace...it must be a lot of stress trying to keep that beautiful old tiara safe! Thank you Charlotte, I love your blog, it's the first and last thing I look at each day!

  2. I love when she wears her hair in a ponytail, and the necklace looks great--I'll admit I thought the dress was rather plain the first time she wore it, so I agree, Charlotte, I definitely prefer this look!

  3. I am a bit disappointed. The statement necklace, for me, is wrong for theat neckline. And the sloppy ponytail is wrong for the formality of the dress. She should have done a bun if she wanted her hair up with dangly earrings. I am just really not liking the choices she is making lately and I can't help but think that if she did all this in the beginning, I never would have started following her!

    1. I also agree!! The ponytail looks school girlish with the black ribbon hanging off it. The shoes are too "workplace" and the necklace is wrong for the dress.

    2. Serious? I didn't realize people were fans of her for her wardrobe and not who she is as a duchess, wife, sister, and ultimately a caring generous human being. I love her for who she has become since graduating college. Its understandable that some would disagree with a few or more of her style choices, but to follow her just to see what she's wearing and then judge it, is sad.

      Delete
    3. Anonymous 22:17 although I can see where your frustration stems from the reality is that Kate is known globally for her wardrobe choices. Since graduating college we know little of what Kate has done except wait 10 years for a man to marry her. There's an air of secrecy around the duchess and it seems as if the BRF would rather Kate would be seen and not heard. If Kate would like the public to know more about her rather than her clothes and jewelry she should make an effort to branch out more and not just do a few sporadic charity events. Or if she doesn't want to be associated as a clothes horse she would for lack of a better word "tone" it down a bit. But honestly at this point it's sad but true that we know little of Kate as a wife, duchess, sister etc because that's the way they want it.

    4. The dress she is wearing is very sophisticated. The elegant neckline is broken with the necklace. Even if it were the real thing, that would not be the dress to wear it with. I think that it needs a decollete to sparkle on.

      Delete
    5. You should read Kate's biography on the royal website. She is not just an empty vessel. She goes quietly about her work because she doesn't want to steal the limelight and because it's in character for her.

      Delete
    6. Anonymous 22:17 I think most of us are fans for who she is as a person and not her looks. However, Charlotte asked what we thought of the outfit, so we are offering our opinions.

I think she looked beautiful, as usual. Stylewise, I would've preferred a black necklace or none, with dangly earrings.

I love seeing her hair pulled back. After reading some of the comments, I agree that a swept up-do would've looked even more on-par with the dress.

That the necklace was so inexpensive is really cool. It seems like she tries to keep at least some of her wardrobe choices accessible to us normal folks.

It was great to see William and Kate together as a couple again!

    7. If the question is what you think of her outfit, why are aspersions cast upon how "little" you she has accomplished or is capable of?

    8. Charlotte I'm curious to know why my comments that were addressing what anonymous 23:27 said were not they were not rude or offensive

      Delete
    9. then it may be better for you if you stop "following" her. Ridiculous statement. She isnt there just to please people in terms of what she wears. She is a member of the BRF, not a celebrity. Get this into perspective.

She is not a full-time royal (and that's been explained so many times I've lost count).

You dont have to like what she wears, but personal attacks on her are unnecessary.

    10. 0006 I am aware that Charlotte asked for opinions, and I respected everyone's opinion. I was simply responding to someone who mentioned if her clothes were as horrible back then as they are now, she wouldn't have paid attention to her.

Blair we actually know a lot about kate. If u read biographies on her and watched 'the royale family', ull know much more about her. And she isn't dressing up to "be seen and not heard". She dresses according to what she likes and what works for the event. She does a lot of work behind the scenes too. You must not know much about her : /

I was simply stating my opinion as I am allowed to do. I would hope that we're both mature enough adults to not get into a pissing match over who knows Kate better. Unless you're a part of the Middleton or Windsor family you know nothing except what has been reported by the media.

      Delete
    13. I definitely don't want to get into a pissing match with u. And ur right I don't know her personally. But I know enough by more than just media. I work for a charity she is very close with and was able to meet her quite a few times. She amazing and therea a lot that fans don't know about her. I respected lynns opinion and reponded with my opinion. U became defensive of my opinion. But anyway, have a great day!

  4. I much prefer how she styled this dress the first time. I really did not like the hair here...I feel like that's what I do with my hair when I pull it back to wash my face at night. Just looked a little too "undone" for me. Also, it looks like she is not wearing any earrings! I know she didn't want to compete with the necklace but surely a tiny diamond stud would have looked a little more finished!

  5. You are so speedy Charlotte. Your blog is my absolute favorite. Always perks up my day when I see an update. Kate looks stunning tonight. A perfect mix of fashion and royal sensibility. I like the hair, though I am sure many will criticize it as a mere ponytail. It is chic and makes her look confident and mature. And the necklace is divine. I agree, this presentation is much better than the first go around with this dress.

    2. Totally agree on your last point! I was going to mention that her slightly fuller (but still exceptionally slim and toned) figure looks stunning. More than anything I am excited to see her mix things up with a new and different hairstyle and a styling angle that is different for her. Not everyone may like it but it is fun and different and that is refreshing.

    3. Finally: familiar dress but different outfit. I see an idea, concept and sophistication. The slightly undone ponytail (which is everything but undone of course) the bold necklace and how it all comes together, there is style and attitude and I absolutely love it!

    1. I agree about the ponytail. I don't like the loose strands in the front. I think a sleek ponytail or a simple chignon would have looked better. That said, I appluad her for stepping outside her comfort zone by wearing the ponytail and necklace tonight. Kate is lovely, but I have been getting a bit bored of signature look of loose curls and sheath dresses.

    1. Oh yes! That has been making me crazy! I've seen other "celebrities" with short trousers also and it's just wrong. I was brought up that you should never be able to see a man's socks when he's walking or standing. His tux looks too small all around, really.

      Delete
    2. Dorothy - I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks William's slacks are always a tad too short! I've always wondered about that. Surely he has someone review his clothing. A man in his position ought to look impeccable in evening clothes, but the dress pants are always too short.
But the two of them sure do make a handsome couple!

      Delete
    3. Check with a professional tailor. They'll probably tell you that there are two standards for men's trouser length: break and no break. Break means the trousers are hemmed to the top of the back of a standard dress shoe and the front of the trouser "breaks" over the front of the shoe. No break means that the trousers are hemmed so that the front skims the top of the front of the shoe, so there is no break in the front creases of the trousers.

      Delete
    4. Indeed, I do believe Anonymous 1:18 is correct. I really like the length of William's pants. A huge pet peve of mine is men's pants that are too long.

      Delete
    5. That's great info on the break/no break men's hem lines! I personally also get a feeling like the suit/tuxedo is a tad one size too small though from looking at photos of William. Hem lines are usually personal preference.

      Delete
    6. I was taught that men's dress pants or non-casual office wear should always have the "break" over the shoe. They should be long enough to break.
It's only casual pants that can be shorter, like when you roll up a pair of khaki's and wear boat shoes without socks!
But formal evening wear should always have the break.

      Delete
    7. Anonymous 18:45, I would disagree with that, particularly with regard to the slim fit style suiting now in style for men. Certainly men's dress pants can be worn without a break.

That being said, I prefer her hair in the half up/half down look she has been sporting, but for casual events, I like it down. Not wild about the necklace, but it does change the look up a bit. I admire her for recycling her clothes. Let's face it, she could were a gunny sack and look great!

  27. Although the duchess is gorgeous with one of the most enviable figures imaginable, i think her fullness on top (probably due to nursing/post pardum) doesnt work with the top if this dress. i do like the necklace accessorized with this, although i much prefer the previous look. i thought the earrings, and wearing her hair down last time knocked the look out of the park. This time, although her hair looked nice, i felt like it was a bit messy (even though that was the look she was going for) and like i mentioned earlier the top part of the dress looked a drop snug. Love that she recycles, and love the black accessories. She is gorgeous as always!
As a side point, i think Kates cartier necklace that she wore with the DVF bright blue dress last summer would have looked great with this. One of the only dresses i think she could have pulled that necklace off with!

Thanks again for such a quick post, much appreciated!

  28. I completely agree with Lynn from CA - sadly I find myself increasingly disappointed with Kate's outfits lately. I didn't like the navy outfit for the Place to Be forum the other day (especially with all navy accessories) or the Alice Temperley cocktail dress for the Sportsaid awards. Tonight I think she spoiled the lines of one of my favourite evening gowns by wearing that unnecessary necklace. I thought she looked amazing in this dress the first time around; this time I appreciate that she wanted to style it differently, but it didn't work for me at all. 31. I actually like Kate's look tonight. Her makeup is beautiful and not overdone with thick black eyeliner like it usually is. She looks very well rested and the dress fits her so much better than it did last time. It looks as if she's put on a little more weight and it really looks good on her. 35. I am also increasingly disappointed by her wardrobe and hair choices. I appreciate that she tried to "dress down" the dress this time around, it just doesn't work for me. I loved the first appearance and didn't really mind her hair being down. But I can critique this and that, but one of the most noticeable changes in her appearance is what is now her rare brilliant, heart-warming, and genuine smile. All her smiles seem somewhat forced. She looks rather tired and vacant and sometimes even unhappy. But "back in the day", she smiled out car windows, getting out of cars, through entire events. Somehow the perception of her "going through the motions" has made some of the magic vanish for me, more so than an outfit "miss". I just miss her happy smile.

Now, a few years in with different priorities, she's used to the experiences and she seems happy to be at most events, but we're not seeing the same smiles that come with the wonder and thrill of newness. She's just grown into her role and she can't possibly be excited for every engagement. I think we see glimpses of that smile when she's really into her visit though.

    1. Where I live, it is not classy to wear cheap costume jewelry, with a formal gown. Is she trying to shock the queen to get the real thing? (No offense) I would like to see some more amazing. I know all of the excuses, she's a new mom, focus on her personality(?), and all that. But can't she have professionals drop in before events, so she looks more polished? I know her priorities have changed, but does she care anymore? Isn't one of the perks of being royal, to have the finest stylists at one's disposal, and all that one needs to do, is to call out? I would love a hairdresser to pop in every morning to do my hair like Diana did. Diana had a "game-face" when she appeared as the Princess of Wales, and she apparently did a good job of keeping her emotions, and her private life private, until the end. She looked very natural in jewels, and I would love to see the Duchess wear lots more. Is it no longer fashionable to wear the real thing, because of the economy? Teenagers buy the pop art f aux jewels, like the Duchess is wearing, in the US. I do not see professional women, or mature celebrities, being taken seriously, wearing something like this ever. I am a jeweler. Diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds have a glory all of their own. I do not mean any disrespect, although I might be accused of it by some. Some of you ladies can get pretty heated, and it can be easy to get hurt feelings, after you are finished. Please focus on my ideas, rather than my character.

    2. wolfpup, I agree. I didn't care for the necklace and this cut (neckline) isn't ideal for *any* necklace. The earrings she wore the last time were the perfect touch. In general, I wish she would wear larger earrings to balance some of her outfits. The little ones she seems to favor get lost with her long hair.

      Delete
    3. wolfpup and royalfan, I agree!
Not a fan of this necklace with this dress.
I would expect that, with the economy being the way it is in the UK and actually the world, the royals are abstaining from appearing dripping in jewels, real or otherwise. These aren't the high-flying 1980s and 1990s of Diana's time when big, showy and ostentatious was the order of the day in clothing and jewelry. Kate's look always has been more classic and subdued, more English country house than McMansion and I think she's carried that forward into her new role.
I'd also say that the engagement dictates the jewelry. For instance, the Diplomatic Reception was a white-time event with glamorous jewelry, tiaras, etc. This movie event doesn't call for such elaborate clothing or jewelry and it would be inappropriate for Kate to appear wrapped in jewels when nobody else is.
Having said that, I agree with royalfan, I wish she'd either put her hair up when she wears the smaller dangle earrings or wear studs if she wears her hair down. The earrings tend to get lost with her long hair hanging forward.
I think Kate has an excellent game face. I think she developed the art of not revealing anything in her face or mannerisms in the seven years she dated William before their engagement.

  37. Dear Charlotte, I have been reading your wonderful blog since May 3, 2011. Its amazing to see the development, in the beginning there was no comments at all. And today? Hundreds! Congratulations, you are doing a real great job. I hope you will never stop doing this and all of us will get older together.

I really love the Cambridges because they are the only couple I know to give me the imagination of perfect life - goodlooking people, love, tenderness, academic education and intelligence, fortune, commitment for others, a romantic and loving couple and loving parents, Catherine´s healthy and normal family - I really really love this. There is no cheating husband, no alcohol problem, no kind of any disorder - it is a relationship everybody of us is longing for. They are so healthy and happy in a world of scandals and divorce everywhere. They are my rocks I can rely on.

This is the reason I dont mind at all what Cathereine is wearing. If her hair is dark or not. If her skirts are short or long. If she is wearing lace or tweed. I see her - and I am happy.

After almost three years of reading your blog I think it is time to give you a feedback -its not overhasty I think :-) So I will continue to open my iphone at least twice a day and have a look at your blog, dear Charlotte, as I did since May 2011. I wished I could give back the happiness you gave to me. Big big smile from Munich, Germany

    1. Angie - I like this blog too, and I also like the Cambridges (enough to read this great blog anyway!), but I can't help but exclaim at your pronouncing them to have something of a perfect life! No one has the perfect life :) Though their lifestyle and seeming groundedness is up there, for sure, and it's a nice dream for the rest of us. If we are all honest, I think we can safely agree that we actually have no idea about the internal dynamics of their relationship or what dysfunctions or disorders are present in their family life. I can guarantee there is dysfunction, as they are human just like you and I.

I know you are just being cheerfully happy for Kate and Will and George :) And it is very inspirational to see them doing well. What I mean is I think it's to our own detriment to put others (Kate and Will in this instance) on such a high pedestal that they are our rocks we can rely on. What if their marriage fell apart or things got messy? Life is messy, no matter who you are.

Anyway, I do agree with you that it's lovely to see a happy couple surviving life in the spotlight. For this reason I also like Gwen Stefani and her husband Gavin Rossdale. They've been married for years and are still going strong by all appearances. Nice to see :)

    2. Just wondering Amber, how do you know for sure that their life is dysunctional. Do you live at KP with them? We are just fans we do not know "for sure" what goes on behind their walls. We can only hope that they are as happy as they seem to be.

      Delete
    3. I agree with Amber - she's not saying their life is a wreck Cindy OK - just nicely cautioning that they shouldn't be the anon's "rock that she can rely on," as they are human. If you put that much pressure on them, they're bound to disappoint. Why not just enjoy who they are?

  39. Thanks Charlotte for your fast and lovely post! You're great!

I like that Kate brings back dresses again and again. I prefer the way it is styled tonight, especially the statement necklace by Zara! Wow, that's cool! I recently saw the necklace in store and loved it. I thought about buying it but could not think of a good occasion to wear it. It's much to chic for everyday and I usually never have the possibility to wear amazing pieces like that! So sad!

I hope to see her wearing statement necklaces more often in future, especially Zara has some more amazing pieces I could imagine Kate wearing very well!

I do not much like her hairstyle. It really looks a bit undone and a proper ponytail or a complete updo would have looked much nicer! Anyway I like that she chose not to keep her hair open.

I don't like her posture. She always seems a little tense to me. Also in photos. She should stop holding her hands in front of her body :D

Anyhow, it's such a sad coincidence that Nelson Mandela has passed away exactly tonight. So bad that two of his daughters were not with him. I wonder how the guests of the premiere heard the news. RIP Nelson Mandela!

The necklace does not go well with the neckline of the dress. I think that a new Mother has a lot on
Her plate and their move from the privacy of Wales must be quite an adjustment..In addition William
Is working out of their home in and out all day(sigh) however if you have a husband working out of the home you know how stressful that can be in some cases. I think Kate's smiles look a little forced lately.

He needs to stand up more straight! Anyway... Thanks for this blog :)

But I do have to say that I am rally disappointed by the comments regarding Kate. I am getting fid up with all the negative things that are being said. So I am telling you now that I will not be making anymore post here on teh blog. I know everyone is entitled to their own opinions but some people really do not know when to let up. It is either her hair is not right, her dress is to short, her shoes are the the right ones or just because William & Kate do not make eye contact on a bus during their Poppy Day there is trouble in their marriage. I wll continue to read your blog but I will not be making any comments.

    3. I realize from some comments that people do not read what Charlotte writes, they simply look at the photos. Too bad, I always enjoy and profit by Charlotte's remarks. That includes soliciting reader opinions, which is what you seem to object to reading. What a shame. I would be bored to tears to read nothing but a chorus of praise for this nice young woman who one day will be Queen Consort of the UK. She's not a plastic doll for us to love and coo over. And she does not give a rap about what any of us think of her. You might consider that when upsetting yourselves so much about comments you perceive to be negative. Kate's not upset at all.

    4. Pauline, I am speaking as someone who has been in Kate's corner from day one. I have fully supported the way W&K conducted their courtship and both their public and private lives since they got married. Having said that, sometimes I do not like an outfit or a hairstyle and I say so.

I understand that Kate will never satisfy *some* people and I've even seen people posting comments under difference usernames to support their own views (silly, but it happens). But for the most part, the comments have been balanced. It's not realistic for everyone to love everything all the time.

I think Kate is learning and experimenting and she won't always get it right. Early on, Diana's wardrobe was part girlish and part frumpy. It wasn't until she gained confidence and learned from mistakes she made along the way that she really came into her own.

Kate will do likewise, but in her case, I also happen to believe that she's being very careful not to be seen as a clothes horse and inspire the resentment that Diana did from "the firm".

      Delete
    5. I appreciate your dedication to the duchess, Pauline - I think she's fab too - but I think you take comments much too personally. It's just people's opinions. Sometimes they're rude, but for the most part, it's just opinion. No one can fit everyone's expectations, and that's fine and that's what makes a blog interesting.

      Delete
    6. Anonymous 3:42 I agree with everything you say whole heartedly. This blog is wonderful in the way that we're allowed to have our own opinions and voice them as we see fit. If we all just agreed it would be very dull and boring on here. I enjoy seeing the difference of opinions on here and engaging in a mature debate. Some people are hardcore Kate fans and don't like to see any negative comments about Kate and it causes a lot of friction. I've seen people jump down each others throats over a simple comment about not liking Kate's clutch. It's rather silly. I wish we could all get along even when we're disagreeing but sadly that won't happen. So if someone can't see both sides of the table then maybe they should leave. I feel like we're all sisters on this blog and we quarrel over petty things but at the end of the day we're all still here for the same thing. To enjoy this wonderful blog and our wonderful duchess.

    7. There are actually a lot of positive comments about Kate every time a new post comes up. You just really seem to get extremly offended each time someone has something not so nice to say (which they are totally entitled). Why not focus on the good things and ignore the negativity if you can`t handle it.

For me this is not a "serious" blog, it is a light hearted one. It is a nice respite from the "real world" we all live in. I always take away a good chuckle or too at the comments, even if I don't agree. It's all in ones perspective.

  51. Dear Charlotte,
I am so sad to hear of the passing of a true Hero Nelson Mandela. I cried like never before. He will be missed for all he did for South Africa, racism and civil rights and the world. I pray he rests in peace he was a true angel and inspiration to the whole world.
Now to Kate and William they both look daper and elegant and what a sad night for a premiere. You asked which look we prefer and I have to say I prefer last year's look when she wore the same dress. I am not too fond of today's hairstyle. However they still both look elegant and beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  52. My other comment got lost somewhere along the way. :)

William's statement about Mandela was appropriate and you could see that they were affected by the news. The timing was surreal to say the least.

To answer Charlotte's question, I preferred the accessories/color that Kate paired this gown with the first time. This necklace conflicts with the neckline and the black shoes appear harsh against the cream gown. And as much as I like an updo, I have to agree with others who've said that this particular one is too casual for the gown. I LOVED the long dangle earrings from last time. That would have been stunning with a true updo.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I know it's not everyone's taste, but this sort of look is why I love Kate's style. She has such a knack for mixing high-end pieces with street fashion and looking fabulous doing it. This was certainly a trendier look with the loose ponytail and chunky jewelry on a high neckline, but I think it was fitting for a movie premiere, a more artsy event. This look was a little more fun and youthful.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I heard it was quite windy in London this evening, so the pulled back hair seems sensible. I thought the ponytail was chic, simple and youthful. Very 60's Swinging London. I don't recall the previous appearance of this white gown so can't comment on the styling versus tonight. I like it very much. It's glamorous and fresh. I don't think an elaborate up-do would suit the gown.

It's entirely expected for a first-time mother to be focused on her child and not looking like a Vogue cover. I think the Duchess looks composed and healthy, and I hope she feels as well as she looks. I'm sure the juggling act of motherhood and a public life is stressful and demanding, even with lots of help and big piles of money. Now about those useful skirt weights, dear ..... talk to Granny, eh?

In my opinion, I think because many woman wear their hair in a ponytail, they believe ponytails are considered casual. But the truth is a ponytail can be elegant, casual, sophisticated, lazy, ect. Ponytails can be whatever u want them to be, as well as clothing. No one says dresses have to be elegant or jeans have to be casual. We all think that the normalacy were used to is what the rule is. But kate proves to us time and time again that style is personal, not worldwide. Everyone who continuously judges and says " its my opinion" needs to just base their opinion on kates style, and not what they personally think is right or appropriate.

I think the outfit is wonderful for kate. She recycled which I love, and the sparkle in that necklace is jaw dropping, and her hair is different than her usual which spiced her look up a bit. Shes beautiful in her way!

  58. I think I like this look best.. she looks sleek, modern and very, very chic. I love the close up photo I saw of how the different sections of her hair were drawn into the pony tail. Thank goodness also that a man like Nelson Mandela lived and made the world a better place in his lifetime.

  62. Dear Charlotte,
Thank you so much for your reply. After reading your blog such a long time it is a funny feeling to get in contact with you :)) Greatest compliments for your extraordinary and fast work - you never seem to sleep? Thanks a lot for all the fun and joy I got from you, it is always a pleasure to open your site.

Dear Amber (00.21) and Cindy OK (01.57), I agree with both of you. Of course the Cambridges are normal humans probably with some every-day-problems. But what I wanted to say, you can be rather sure not to discover bad news as we are used to whenever we open the internet - we find divorce, new partners, cheat, depression, drugs, children are born and left after a few years, get a new daddy..... every day... everywhere... Sometimes I am happy when some actresses or singers stay in their relationship for more than one or two years. But then suddenly - booooo! - the families split up and everything is over.

The Cambridges give me this normal and healthy feeling - constancy, reliability, friendlyness, no sudden bad surprise. Fortunately I have a very good life myself (touch wood!) and I am happy to see that this is no exception. This is meant by "they are my rocks" - in this crazy world of celebrities.

Finally, dear Amber, think of the words Catherine´s midwife said who had prepared her for the delivery: "Both are very kind people. You get what you see."

I wish them the very very best in their future life and thanks to Charlotte I will be able to join them a little bit from the distance :)))

Kindest regards from Angie, Munich - Germany

How shocking it must have been for the audience present...

  67. Very sad news to hear of Nelson Mandela's passing. His was an incredible life. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.
Kate's look at the film event - ugh. Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. A hot mess as we'd say over here on this side of the pond.
I ADORED her look head to candy apple-red polished toes the first time she wore this gown, which I love. I love even more the dark green version of it and think that would look as stunning or more so on Kate.
The first time we saw this gown, Kate's look in it was absolutely spot-on. Her hair worn down and curled, the simple diamond earrings, the Jimmy Choo Vamp sandals, that stunning crimson pedicure, it just all came together and looked elegant and perfect.
This looked like she threw on a dress, slipped her feet in some black pumps, threw her hair up in a haphazard pony and dashed out the door. Nothing about this look said put together.
Again, I don't understand why and how she keeps missing the mark by just that much.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Elegance is in the eye of the beholder! I thought this version of the white dress much, much better than the first time. Then her messy hair obliterated the top of the gown and the red toenails were too casual. This time the hair (definitely not thrown up haphazardly, look closely) was out of the way and she wore nice accessories.

There are pictures of Princess Beatrice in a quilted skirt and jacket, and what looks like the same necklace as Kate's. It looked good with both the casual and the formal attire. I think one day Kate will switch to more expensive jewels, but this was interesting, and worked well with the plain neckline.

But appearance is secondary to the emotional but controlled way Catherine and William handled the news of Mandela's death. William's brief statement was so kind. I admired him for speaking from the heart rather than simply disappearing after the film ended.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Once again a sighting of my favorite couple! I just love the way they look together =) I understand that others don't really like the choices Kate is now making with regards to style. However, I am amused to watch what she wears now, taking in mind she is in a new phase in life - motherhood. I love that I am getting a glimpse into more Kate's character rather than the stunning gowns or sparkling jewels she wears. What I see when I see a gown recycled and youthful ponytail, is a woman whose perspective has shifted to something more precious in her life - her baby. Maybe Kate is also trying to be frugal by rewearing her clothes, so she can buy more baby stuff for George. Anyways, I like her new style and I'm even happy to know that she is more focused on looking after her family now (Not that she didn't before!). On another note, it was interesting that Mandela's death was came in just as they finished the movie about him. It must have been a very somber audience, however I like William's heartfelt words, I could truly tell the couple were moved by it. I'm saddened by Mandela's death and I hope he rests in peace.

  70. The Queen during a visit to Parliament was shown a plaque on the floor that honored Mandela's appearance there, and she lingered long enough to talk about the strange coincidence of his death just before the Mandela film premier began. When she commented audibly that William and Catherine had been at the film, and had heard of Mandela's death just before it ended, I thought the Queen was giving tacit approval to their behavior and to William's words. Since his remarks were somewhat unusual, it was nice that his grandmother seemingly approved.

  71. As it turns out, the Nelson Mandela memorial service to be attended by heads of state will be in Johannesburg. President Obama will be on the ground for only a few hours, and will not stay overnight, reducing the security stress. Still, it will be the largest gathering of humans in memory, and logistics must be a real challenge. South Africa has been preparing for some time to handle it. The funeral in Mandela's ancestral village will be private. I don't know whether any of the heads of state or their representatives are invited.

I would guess that William and Catherine have sent sympathy notes to the Mandela family, since the Prince of Wales will represent the Queen in South Africa. Someday no doubt they will take their turn attending such events.
