Two Red Carpet Engagements Announced, Magical Memories, James Pryce Speaks About Kate's Hair + More

Hello-Hello Duchess Kate readers, I hope you're all enjoying a great week.

I know many of us were disappointed to hear the Duchess will not be attending the Winter Whites Gala at Kensington Palace on the 26th of November. For those of you who were looking forward to seeing Kate draped in a stunning Jenny Packham, Alexander McQueen or Temperley London gown, you'll be delighted to hear two red carpet engagements have been added to the Duchess's diary.

On Thursday, 28th of November, the Duchess of Cambridge, patron of SportsAid, will attend the charity's annual gala dinner, SportsBall, at Supernova, a unique pop up venue in Embankment Gardens, London. Kate will meet supporters and announce which SportsAid athlete will be the winner of its prestigious One-To-Watch Award.

Supernova London

More from SportsAid:

'Recognising young sports people who show through their performance, sacrifices, commitment and attitude that they have great potential for the future, the One-To-Watch Award will this year be chosen from more than 1,300 talented sportsmen and women from across the UK who have been supported by SportsAid in 2013.'

Last month Kate attended a SportsAid workshop at Olympic Park, and it's excellent to see her supporting the organisation again at their annual ball. It's an organisation which can very much benefit from a royal patronage in terms of awareness. It promises to be a fantastic evening and a particularly special one for the winner of the One-To-Watch Award.

On Thursday, 5th of December, William and Kate will attend the Royal Film Performance 2013, the UK première of Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom at the Odeon Leicester Square, London. Before the performance, Their Royal Highnesses will meet a selection of trustees and beneficiaries of the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund, and Nelson Mandela's daughter Zindzi Mandela.

Mandela: Long Walk To Free

The couple will also meet members of the film's cast and crew including the star of the movie, one of my favourite actors, the talented Idris Elba. British readers will be familiar with the versatile actor from Luther whilst US readers will recognise his name from The Wire. I've heard wonderful reviews of his performance as Mandela, and I have no doubt William and Kate will very much enjoy the movie.

Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom

The Royal Film Performance has been supported by members of the Royal Family since 1946 when King George VI attended the première of A Matter of Life and Death in Leicester Square.

With Christmas fast approaching (yes, yes it's the second time I have mentioned the festive period this month; you can all see I'm embracing it quite early this year :)) I thought it a good time to share a review of a book I had the pleasure to read recently - one I think would make an excellent stocking filler for royal fans - Magical Memories by the one and only Arthur Edwards.

Magical Memories

In terms of royal photography, Arthur Edwards is considered a legend and is said to be Prince William's favourite. For over thirty years, he has captured some of the most memorable and iconic shots of British royalty, from candid shots to intimate portraits to rare moments when the royals were caught off guard. Arthur has an ability to capture special moments and a wide selection of these moments are wonderfully illustrated in his book.

Arthur Edwards Magical Memories

In chapter one, Arthur discusses his all time favourites, including photos of the late Diana, Princess of Wales. In one photo he captions, "One of the reasons you never missed a Diana engagement was because you might never see the same look again. In this case in 1983 she visited a school in Newham, East London, wearing an Edwardian jacket, a bow tie and her hair swept up like a 1950s film star, she never repeated that style."

Arthur Edwards Magical Memories

I thoroughly enjoyed looking through the book and I would consider it an excellent royal keepsake encompassing some very tender and romantic shots of Prince Charles and Diana from happier times we often forget.

Arthur Edwards Magical Memories

Arthur enjoys an excellent working relationship with the royals; Diana referred to him affectionately as "Our Arthur". The book chronicles the Royal Family magnificently from a beautiful chapter dedicated to The Queen Mother to recent events such as the Royal Wedding, the Jubilee, the birth of Prince George and of course, a special chapter showing Arthur alongside the royals.

Arthur Edwards Magical Memories

Magical Memories is available at The Book Depository for £13.45. A splendid commemorative book!

Once again, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge grace the cover of Hello! Magazine.

Hello! Magazine

It was a very interesting read primarily because of Kate's former hairdresser, James Pryce's input on 'The Great Hair Debate' that surfaced last week following photos of Kate's roots. Mr. Pryce knows Kate's locks better than anyone having styled her hair for the royal wedding, and he also accompanied the Duchess on her first royal tour to Canada in 2011. He delivered his expert opinion on last weeks furore:

'Kate was out and about working for a good cause, supporting our war heroes, and looked absolutely stunning. Her hair looked fantastic and I think it's disgusting that people were so mean to her. She's only human. She is an iconic, beautiful young lady who has only recently given birth. And her hair looks as healthy and glossy as ever.
Some women prefer not to use hair colour while they're pregnant, as they want to put as few chemicals into their body as possible. And that concern can carry on throughout breastfeeding. You can sometimes suffer a bit of hair loss after birth. Despite having hairdressers at her disposal perhaps Kate feels she has more important things to think about than a few grey hairs. She's got a little baby to look after.
She was always very pleasant and charming, very sweet, and has beautiful hair to work with. And I think we should all appreciate her for what she is and focus on what she was doing, supporting all our fallen heroes.'

Finally, we wish Prince Charles a very happy 65th birthday! Camilla has given a very insightful interview about her husband to commemorate his birthday. You can read it at The Telegraph. It certainly would be interesting to see Kate do the same about William someday, wouldn't it?

We'll be continuing with our 'Kate Loves: Jewellery' posts over the weekend :)

First of all, I want to give a huge shout out to wolfpup for her lovely comment at the end of the last thread.

Second, is the Sports Aid gala the gala she presented at last year as she was recovering from being ill?

And you'll never hear me say anything about anyone and their grey hair, other than they ought to go for it. I went grey really prematurely (like starting in high school prematurely) and I dyed mine for a while until I got so sick of doing it I cut it off. And I haven't looked back since. I haven't like the styling of Kate's hair the last couple of times, but if she doesn't want to colour it fine by me.

I think criticism (if any) should come into play about things people can change, not things they can't like their facial features or grey hair. Just my opinion on that, and you all can call me on it until the cows come home if I ever do.

  2. Charlotte you have just saved me hours and hours of shopping for my husband's Christmas gift. He has spoken often of Arthur Edwards' work when he catches up on what the royals are doing and especially William and Catherine. The book will be the Coup de Grace piece from Santa. He and several of his former helicopter crews are in the living room now (he is retired US Navy Search and Rescue) planning for 2014 reunion in UK. I may have to leave the picture of the black suede boots as hint for something from Santa. Thanks again for this great post and thanks always for your wonderful blog on W & C and for the hard work and long hours you put in to keep us informed. I will leave the computer at work till early next week so he does not see this. Joan - East Tenn.

Great post! I love the pics of Diana, truly a beautiful lady! I'm glad Kates old hairdresser spoke out in her defense. I do hope he won't get in trouble by the Royals, I know the prefer people who worked for them to stay private. People need to stop caring if Kate has gray hair. Or if her hair is to curly for a sober event. There are more important things going on in the world, like what is happening in the Philippines. I am glad Sophie is going over there to help rise awareness to horrible damage.
    Have a great night!

  4. I don't think Kate should be criticized for letting some of her grey hairs show. I also know she has more important things to think about than what people like me think of her hair. However if I were to state my opinion on it, I don't think it's looked as good since she stopped going to James Pryce. I'm not sure why she switched, but I so wish she would go back to him! His comments about her were lovely. I just prefer it when it's got that rich dark chestnut color not so lightened and I loved the way he used to have it just curl at the bottom and not all the way down. Everyone's entitled to want to change up their look though. Anyway Kate is beautiful no matter what and I'm excited we have two more formal engagements to look forward to!

Beautiful post Charlotte! As far as I'm concerned James Pryce nailed it. Her hair is secondary to baby George who is no doubt a handful and her wonderful work for her Charities. I'm thinking really, really people Kate is beautiful and most of all she seems to have a very caring heart. Keep up the great job William shielding her from any negativity. Well done both of you.
The book looks wonderful :) I'm ready for a new Royal book.
Thank you Charlotte hope all is well with your studies :)

  7. Charlotte another great post. I love that you added James Pryce's comment regarding Kate's hair. Maybe now the people who wrote in the last post and gave Kate carp because she had a little grey and that it was not what they liked. We can only hope.

I am looking forward the the next few engagements. Love that William & her are doing a joint engagement, I love seeing them together. They rock as a couple. The are just so stunning as a couple.

  9. People will criticize Kate whether she does one thing or another. If she dyes her hair, it would start a mommy war over dying her hair while breastfeeding; if she doesn't, she's criticized for being imperfect. It's ridiculous. I love that she is willing to show imperfections. I hope that as the years go by, she ages gracefully. I don't mind if people dye their hair, but I don't want her to get botox or fillers and mess up her beautiful face. That's awhile off, though.
I can't wait to see Kate again! I understand she has more important things to do, but come on! haha

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. But why is that any different? It's not okay for other people to want her not to have gray hair, or dye her hair, but it's okay for you to not want her to get Botox?

      Delete
    2. Whitney from Arizona17 November 2013 at 18:05

I'm surprised by the botox comment too, but mostly because I thought it was fairly clear that she had used botox before her pregnancy. After the wedding, her skin was a LOT smoother and wrinkle-free compared to before the wedding, and then since getting pregnant some of those natural wrinkles returned. Honestly, I always thought that if she did use it, she did it very well and didn't go overboard. I think it's Kate's decision whether she does want to use botox, or get plastic surgery, or dye her hair, or leave her hair long, but I agree with you that people will ALWAYS have opinions, both positive and negative, about her looks. I REALLY hope that when she starts full-time work as a royal (when is that going to happen??) people will have more interesting things to talk about than her hair!

  16. I have to add that all this talk about "gray hairs" is silly. It's not as if she has stopped highlighting her hair and has gray roots down to her ears - but that's the type of reaction she is getting. I enjoy the superficial details as much as anyone else, but I think a new low has been reached with this "topic". Let's all do our part and not mention it again. Has anyone had their picture taken lately? I'm sure we can all agree, Kate photographs extremely well.

The Duchess of Cornwall was looking very sparkly in Colombo tonight---wearing the Greville tiara.

  19. I'm looking forward to Kate's next appearances. :)

I thought it was classy of James Pryce to speak out like that since he is not her current stylist. Kate is not vain and George is her priority right now, as it should be, but she switched before the baby was born and James did a better job.

And I just preordered the book on Amazon. It will be released on Feb 1, 2014.

  20. I just read the Telegraph article. How ironic that Diana was accused of manipulating the press. Her only mistake was leading from the heart. Camilla has been the Queen of self-promotion far longer than most people realize...and certainly longer than she has been married to Charles. All IMO of course! :)

I'm old enough to remember all the criticism Diana received re: her hair any time she made even the smallest change. (She really got blasted when she attempted to grow her hair long.) Unfortunately, Kate has also been on the receiving end of so much criticism. I hope that she ignores the comments and just does what works for her, her family, and for their lifestyle.

  25. HI Charlotte,

Thanks so much for giving a heads up on available shoes/boots! I know they haven't been that popular among posters, but I like the SW Wedges and have been searching for a year. Nice to know I can just come here and be automatically alerted!

You don't happen to have heard anything regarding a possible re-release of the Pied-a-Terre Imperia wedges have you? I ordered mine a size too big and have been waiting for the smaller size to come back but it doesn't appear that they will. I sent Dune London an email, so we'll see. How are you so fast on the alerts for these types of things?

I am definitely going to pick up a copy of the Magical Memories book (although I may have to wait for Amazon.com). The picture with Charles kissing Diana was SO sweet, it makes me sad and so wish for that fairy tale to have been true. It breaks my heart that in her short life Diana never knew true love (that we know of).

I am glad that James Pryce came out and talked about Kate's grays. I never had a problem with them -- for heaven's sake, they are barely showing! My only issue with Kate was the style she chose to wear her hair the last two appearances, however, even so she still looked absolutely amazing in every other respect. Even less than 24 hours after giving birth, she looked 1000 times better than me on my best day!

I think the majority of the criticism probably comes from the fact that people (myself included) look up to her so much that we have her on a pedestal. And if she comes a little short of that, we are more disappointed than we really should be. At the end of the day, I have yet to see her looking less than well put together and polished, even when I don't like a certain aspect of her look. Let's face it, not all of us can say that.

On that note, I am going through Kate withdrawals again -- Kate please come out again, we want to see you!!

I'm also in the minority who love the Corkwswoons, they are just so comfortable and a very convenient choice with skinny jeans and a blazer when one is rushing out the door and needs to look put together.

If they don't have the correct logo, doesn't that mean they're knockoffs? I would definitely complain to Zappos.

    2. I never implied they were knockoffs. I just wanted to let readers know just in case it was important for them to have the logo on the back of the shoe. They certainly looked SW in every way. They may have rushed the manufacturing because of the high demand and didn't put the logo on. Or, perhaps mine was the only paired they missed. Gorgeous shoes but mine went back.

      Delete
    3. It's odd that the logo was missing. My mind went to knockoffs too, but I suppose it is possible that your pair, or even a whole batch, missed the logo-step of the manufacturing process.

    6. Sorry, Bluhare. I misread your comment initially. My mistake :-)

Thanks, Charlotte for the WKW info on the modifications. The gold logo really sets off against the blue suede, so I'm disappointed they decided to change it, especially since they can sell a ton of the shoes thanks to our fabulous Kate. I tried to repliKate with the Boston Proper shoes but they ran too small. I love the look of the dark blue against the skin, so I'm really disappointed. Oh, well. Guess I'll just have to spend my money somewhere else!

    7. I just looked at the SW Corkswoons on the Zappos website and the button on the back of the shoe has the SW on it, but I did notice that the bottom of the shoe has a different pattern. I looked at a pair of shoes on the SW website (not the Corkswoons -- they didn't have the image) and the bottom of the shoe has a different logo on it than my other SW shoes so it does appear that they have changed the logo this year, but it is legit.

Rose, are you talking about the button on the back of the shoe? Unfortunately, I don't know what it looked like before. I hope the pair I just ordered doesn't have the peeling issue -- I've never had a problem with Zappos shoes in the past....fingers crossed!

    8. HI Lynn!

Yes, I am referring to the gold logo button on the back of the shoe. The image on the site shows it, but the shoes don't have it. I sent mine back (breaks my heart) but I do have them in the nude already. I just much prefer the blue. Enjoy your shoes!!! They sell out sooooo fast! BTW, did yours come with a dust bag?

IMO she has the most beautiful hair, which ought to be highlighted with gorgeous jewels. Ah well--we can but hope---my imagination sees what it would be like, but if we have to wait until she is Queen, or even Princess of Wales---imagination might be the only way I will see it!
