New Engagement Announced + Winter Whites Gala Marks the End of a Successful Month for William

Hello-Hello Duchess Kate readers, we're back with several updates. In a change from our usual posts they're mostly about William (more on that a bit later).

We begin with news of a new engagement for our favourite royal couple. On Wednesday, 11 December The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will attend a screening of naturalist Sir David Attenborough's Natural History Museum Alive 3D at the museum in London. Their Royal Highnesses will attend a reception with the film's producers, listen to speeches, watch the film and listen to a Question & Answers session about the project.

Natural History Museum

Those interested in natural history will be pleased to hear it will be broadcast on Sky in the New Year. More from Majesty Magazine's Facebook Page:

'The ground-breaking film sees David Attenborough bringing to life his favourite extinct creatures through 3D technology. In the film, Attenborough stays behind as the doors are locked and night falls, meeting dinosaurs, ice age beasts and giant reptiles which come alive in front of his eyes.
The resurrected beasts include Diplodocus, the dinosaur that welcomes visitors to Central Hall; the moa - a long extinct giant flightless bird; and Giganthopis, a snake that grew up to 36 metres around 40 million years ago.'

Kate has been patron of the Natural History Museum since April, and it promises to be a fascinating evening. I have no doubt the Cambridges will enjoy the screening. Speaking about it Mr. Attenborough said, "I hope that it will make people think about these extinct creatures differently and bring the museum to life in a new and exciting way."  David Attenborough is always so interesting to watch, and I'm somewhat addicted to his natural history programmes, which are packed with insightful information.

Last night Kensington Palace was transformed into a wonderland for the long-awaited Winter Whites Gala. It was an incredible evening with an array of stars including Taylor Swift, Jon Bon Jovi, Colin Firth and Michelle Dockery gracing the red carpet in support of Prince William's patronage - homeless charity Centrepoint.

Centrepoint Facebook Page

Taylor Swift thoroughly enjoyed meeting Prince William: "It's my first time playing at Kensington Palace or any palace for that matter. I have to thank you Prince William for having me." The singer looked beautiful in a Reem Acra gown while her clutch was by one of Kate's favourite designers, Jenny Packham.

Guests were incredibly excited when Bon Jovi took to the stage and prepared to perform one of his greatest hits, 'Livin' On A Prayer', when the star told guests if they promised to make a substantial online donation to Centrepoint they might get an 'early Christmas present'. He then urged William and Ms. Swift to join him as backing singers. And yes this really happened...

Centrepoint Facebook Page

Aides said the impromptu performance hadn't been planned in advance and was totally off the cuff. To view a video of the future king 'rockin' out' in front of six hundred guests please click here. It is such a pity Kate wasn't at the gala. I'm sure this is a moment she would have loved to have seen.

Thank you Mr. Bon Jovi for asking William to join you on stage, what a memorable moment it was and how lovely to see the new dad sharing his fun side in aid of a cause so close to his heart. Below we see William with the Bon Jovi family.

The best news to emerge from the gala was that the event raised a staggering amount - over £1 million in fact. The fabulous news prompted me to a little research on Centrepoint, something I'd done before for previous events where William and Kate supported the organisation. I instantly noticed the Christmas Appeal, my thoughts (like so many of us) were drawn to my own Christmas plans and the realisation of how lucky I am to have a safe, warm home when so many will be without shelter, food and company during the festivities this year. Centrepoint will do everything within their power to ensure homeless young people have hot, healthy food and people who care about their futures.

The gala marked the end of what has been a hugely important month for Prince William. He has undertaken a string of engagements, championing causes close to his heart. It is perhaps the first step towards Kate and him becoming full-time royals. The Prince joined his father, The Prince of Wales, at London Zoo's Tiger Territory where the duo held a United For Wildlife meeting on anti-poaching initiatives.

During the visit William revealed he hopes to visit Kenya at some point next year. Will the Duchess accompany him on the overseas trip? We won't know for quite a while as I imagine details will be ironed out in the coming months.

It's great to see William immersing himself in his royal role. The royals have the power to do so much good for their chosen charities and in the current economic climate their support is needed more than ever. Royal reporter Richard Palmer, who has accompanied William on his recent engagements, noted he seems very 'happy and relaxed. I'd guess it's down to a happy family life'.

We'll see Kate tomorrow when she attends the SportsBall. Until then, I'd very much like to wish our readers across the pond a very Happy Thanksgiving! :)

  1. Hello Charlotte,
    Great post as always.
I have already watched the video of William, and Taylor singing with Bon Jovi and it's just hilarious and too funny. William looks so relaxed and like he is having a good time. Taylor looked beautiful. Too bad Kate wasn't there.
Any predictions on what she's going to be wearing tomorrow? I'm guessing something new.
So sweet of you to wish a Happy Thanksgiving.

    1. Hello Blair,

The dress code is black tie so I expect we'll see a long gown, more than likely by McQueen, Temperley or Jenny Packham. Although Kate may surprise us and try a new designer or recycle :)

    2. My guess is for Packham or Temperly. Something beautiful and understated but elegant. I'm going out on a limb and guessing either something grey, black, or cream.

    3. I'm hoping for a new gown, hair in an updo, and some pretty jewelry! We'll see! :)

    4. Think she be in a McQueen dress but am trying to think of one she would recycle if she chooses that designer... mmm Happy Thanksgiving xxx

  4. That video MADE MY NIGHT! I LOVE it!!! Prince William definitely has some rhythm in him! I'm sad Kate missed such a wonderful night, but WOW....over 1 million pounds! That's amazing! Congratulations to a job well done for William and Centrepoint. I have a feeling Diana was smiling down and probably doing a bit of dancing and singing herself. I know Centrepoint was a charity close to her heart.

William definitely looked so handsome in his tux and I LOVED Taylor's dress! It was beautiful! Bon Jovi didn't look too bad either!!!! :-) What a great night for everyone involved!

It was nice to see Prince Charles and William together for an engagement. Charles looked so happy. I'm sure he's very proud of his boys and the work they are doing. I'm looking forward to seeing my favorite couple together for the screening at the Natural History Museum. Something to look forward to!

I hope all my fellow Americans have a wonderful Thanksgiving. May you and your families be blessed beyond measure! We are ALL blessed by our wonderful friends across the pond and by sweet Charlotte who works tirelessly to keep this wonderful blog going! Happy Thanksgiving!

PS.....That tiger at the zoo was gorgeous!

    1. Kate, you summed it up beautifully. I agree with everything you wrote. :) I'm sure Diana *was* smiling.

On a lighter note, it's nice to see Charles in a new coat. A birthday present perhaps...

  6. LOVED this event coverage!!
I love when William drops the surly, scowly, pouty act and is more himself and cheerful and down-to-earth and friendly and this was definitely one of those times.
It's times like these when he's being himself and we really see Diana in him, in many ways!! He's seemed more relaxed and less stiff and grumpy. I'd guess a happy home life has a lot to do with it but I'm also wondering if the queen gave him a "suck it up, buttercup" talk, since William (and Kate) really were given an unprecedented amount of freedom and latitude to do what they wanted for the first couple years of their marriage. I'd guess the queen maybe reminded him and Kate of their royal position and their role and their duties.
I'm not a fan of Taylor Swift but she looked like a princess herself! Her gown was beautiful and classy and appropriate!
I've read that Kate and William and the baby will be spending Christmas at Sandringham with the queen and that the MIddletons will be housed at Anmer Hall, which apparently is ready enough to house them for a few days, although William and Kate apparently don't take possession until after the New Year. I'll try to find the link for that story, it was one of the regular royal beat reporters.
For those who want to scream that Kate won't be spending Christmas with her parents at their house, consider that Andrew's daughters have not spent a Christmas Day with their mother in nearly 10 years, they are always with their father at Sandringham and they go see their mother after Christmas.

    1. Honestly, I just don't understand the view that the Queen had to "remind" William and Kate of anything. Isn't it possible that things have gone according to plan? If we consider the history of the RF, it's makes complete sense.

Regarding Christmas, I think W&K will do their best to include both sides of the family in the years to come. And while I'm not a fan of Sarah's, I do think it's sad that her daughters don't spend Christmas with her. But that may very well be a family (York) decision; Beatrice and Eugenie's status is very important to Sarah and Andrew and perhaps being seen with the rest of the royals on Christmas morning is a priority. IMO. :)

    2. Oh, and I agree about TS's gown. I thought it was soft and feminine, and her haircut was cute with the red lipstick. Almost like she was plucked out of an earlier decade. :)

DISCLAIMER: Veering off topic a bit for those offended by it

I should go google this, but I think it's a myth that the Queen gave them two years to enjoy themselves. I know it was reported everywhere, but in their engagement interview they talk about how Kate was the most prepared royal bride ever and was going to hit the ground running. If they had the OK for two years off, why would they have said that?

  8. William has done some great work for his charities. I am so happy that he helped raie over a million pounds for Centerpoint. Well done William.

As for Taylor I did not like her dress. And for that fact I do not like her. She try's to be someone she is not. I feel she was trying to be Kate last night. And I am sorry but she does not holed a candle to the beautiful Duchess. I am really sorry she did not get to see William up ther singing. He sang thay song to Kate before.

That's Charlotte for bring Williams hard work to light. We here about Kate's good work but never Williams. He has done a great job.

I can't believe this, but I agree with Pauline about the dress. I didn't really like it either. It wasn't bad, but I didn't think it was great either. Taylor looked nice, though, I will say that. Although I agree with royalfan and Anonymous that she wasn't trying to look like Kate.

    4. It's interesting how people who seem to be appalled by any slight criticism of the 'beautiful Duchess' (Well yes, she is very beautiful but I do not get why that feature is stressed so much more than others. Ever thought of calling her the 'kind Duchess' or the 'smart Duchess'?? ), anyway it's interesting that those people who are always quick to come to the Duchess' defense seem to be equally quick when it comes to condemning others.

It's nice of you to recognize the hard work that William and Kate are doing, but don't you think that Taylor Swift probably works just as hard? It's very unlikely that one is able to be successful at such a young age without being a hard worker.
It is probably also unknown to you that Taylor Swift is quite the charitable person herself - last year, for instance, she donated over 4 million dollars to charity.

And I am sorry but your accusations just seem unfounded and even a bit ridiculous to me. What could have possibly led you to think that Taylor was trying to emulate Kate? Her dress looks more like the kind of thing she usually wears than anything out of Kate's wardrobe. Why, yes, it must have been the Jenny Packham purse...

I can truly see nothing wrong as far as her behaviour and dress are concerned. She was introduced to Prince William and talked to him, which is the polite thing to do. She sat next to him, as she was seated there by whoever was responsible for the seating arrangement.
And as for the dress, I can't see how it is more revealing than some of the evening gowns that Kate has worn. What a lot of people don't seem to notice is that it's not even as low-cut as it appears to be. Quite the opposite, in fact, it's just partly made of sheer fabric.

  9. I, too, wish that Kate could've seen Will's debut with Bon Jovi! What amazing photos and video! (And now, after Harry's joke about getting away from the screaming baby, William can point out that he - not Harry - got to sing with Bon Jovi and Taylor Swift. :o) What a wonderful event for such a worthy charity. Just think of all the good Centrepoint will do with the monies raised last night.

Happy Thanksgiving to all the DK readers from the U.S. It's kind of melancholy for me - my 1st holiday without my sweet mom. But I'll count my blessings, including the wonderful people on this blog, especially Charlotte. :o)

Hi Julie, the first Thanksgiving without my dad was last year and it was OK. Might have something to do with the fact that being British Thanksgiving is more like a nice start to the Christmas season for me. And Christmas wasn't as awful as I thought either and I was absolutely dreading that. Instead of getting mad at dad sitting there saying "Don't you think that's a bit drab?" (his response to every article of clothing ever made), I got to think of him doing that and it wasn't that bad. Thinking of you today.

  10. I hope to see William continue to let his hair down in the future. It is endearing.

I thought that Taylor's dress was a little too daring - men like to look at that stuff. It was beautiful though, but she really needed an escort to wear it. Just because she is an American celebrity does not mean she should not dress with good taste for royal events...very skimpy bodice in my opinion. But it was a very beautiful dress...just lovely, The dress really showed off many of her 'finer points'. I love Taylor, just saying... You have to respect men for who and what they are. This was not an occasion to be so sexy.

    1. Close up photos (DM) show that the gown has sheer fabric that forms a boat neck cut. It may appear more daring because of the color, but it's as much of an illusion as most of the lace-like gowns these days.

I'm too old to know much about this young woman, but I thought she hit it out of the ball park for the event. And I give her extra points since she's 23 and in the music industry. Just look at some of her contemporaries. ;)

    2. If the "fabric" is totally see-through and I can still the tops of her breasts does it really count as fabric? I like the dress but I also recognize that it is daringly low.

  11. Fantastic post Charlotte! I love the video and the photos of William singing and also the ones with Prince Charles. Amazing how William prepares himself to his new role as future king. There is much kindness and compassion in this young man. Kate is just the right consort for him!

I haven't watched the video yet as a friend said William looked really uncomfortable and she couldn't finish watching it because she felt bad for him. William certainly got a few points from me for doing it, though. I'd have been like a statue up there, but that could have a lot to do with the fact that I have a voice that isn't even good enough for the shower!

  14. Although I am not a fan of pop stars I do not think the comments on Taylor Swift trying to emulate the Duchess were justified of far more concern to me was William's behaviour when sitting next to Taylor at the concert and it is unusual for a performer to be in the audience usually they remain backstage. I would think William requested she should sit next to him. The photos shown in the mail of him chatting her up would not seem the behaviour one would expect from a "happily married man" and father. I feel very sorry for the Duchess who will probably have been upset by his behaviour.
Until now I have admired William's work with his charities and his caring attitude for young people and the generally disadvantaged and really hoped that when he married Kate that it would be a successful marriage as it appeared to be a "love match" and it was very much his choice no pressure but I do now sadly have doubts. Incidentally I agree with others that William looked slightly embarrassed up on stage but it certainly had the desired effect of highlighting the Charity which I am sure was the reason he did it. Nothing wrong with that

  15. Taylor's dress is beautiful, the tiger is beautiful, and William is a good sport. He is obviously dedicated to the good causes he supports. I do think the valet should press the lapels on his tuxedo!
