Prince George Meets Diana's Family, Upcoming Engagement + More!

Hello-hello Duchess Kate readers,

We begin today's post with a story that made the headlines earlier this week. It has been widely reported the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince George spent the weekend with the late Princess Diana's eldest sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale, and her family. It was a poignant visit, as the weekend marked the 16th anniversary of Diana's death.

Daily Express

The trio were spotted boarding a helicopter at Belton Woods Hotel and Country Club - just six miles from Lady Sarah's farmhouse in Stoke Rochford.

More from the Express story:

'The second-in-line to the throne and his wife have done their best to stay in touch with all of William's Spencer relatives. But they are particularly close to Lady Sarah, who dated Prince Charles before Diana and acted as an informal lady-in-waiting to her youngest sister.
William and Harry are highly protective of their mother's legacy and like to observe the anniversary of her death privately.'

William and Kate attended the wedding of Lady Sarah's daughter, Emily McCorquodale in June 2012.

Marking Diana's anniversary by introducing little George to his mother's family was obviously very important to William. It must be an incredibly difficult time for him and Harry, and the visit offered an opportunity to reflect and share memories. In 2009, William spoke of the pain of losing his mother: "Never being able to say the word 'Mummy' again in our life sounds like a small thing. However, for many, including me, it's now just really a word - hollow and evoking only memories." The speech can be viewed in its entirety here. It is thought the couple returned to Anglesey following the trip, where William will shortly be completing his time there as a search and rescue pilot at RAF Valley.

Sixteen years after her death, Diana is very much making headlines around the world due to new alleged reports surrounding the cause of her death and the release of 'Diana', a movie focusing on the the final two years of her life and her relationship with Dr. Hasnat Khan. There have been less than favourable reactions to the movie thus far due to inaccuracies and one can only imagine how William and Harry feel about it. The movie premièred at Leicester Square in London last night, and actress Naomi Watts, who plays Diana, said she wanted to "incorporate Diana's spirit and sense of humour into her portrayal".

Will you be seeing the movie?

new page has been added to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's official website focusing on Kate's commitment to supporting children's hospices.

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Official Website

Kate became publicly involved in this area when she became patron of East Anglia's Children's Hospices in January 2012 and since then she carried out a number of public engagements, speeches and behind the scenes work to learn more about the work carried out by hospices and the people they help. The page includes photos and videos from Kate's hospice videos. Due to the addition of the page, it would seem obvious it is a charitable area the Duchess plans to work further with in the future.

In other royal news, Prince William, in his role as President of the Football Association, will host the very first football match at Buckingham Palace on Monday, October 7, to help pay tribute to 150 volunteers that help deliver and support the nation's favourite game. It's a very exciting event for the association and forms a key part of the FA's 150th anniversary celebrations and will entail an official ceremony at the palace.

The FA

In a statement, Prince William, who dreamed up the idea said:

'In our 150th year, it is hugely important for the FA to honour the efforts of the many thousands of volunteers who week in, week out, help to provide the opportunity for millions more people to enjoy football at grassroots level.
Inviting 150 of these volunteers to Buckingham Palace provides a fitting way for the FA to pay tribute and give thanks.'

Will the Duchess make an appearance? She's not scheduled too, however it has been said Kate will accompany William "on several engagements this year". Similarly to last Friday's Anglesey engagement, they will most likely be announced last minute. As it's a football match (I don't know about Kate, but I for one don't have a clue what my fiancé is talking about when he discusses football) I don't think it's very likely she'll be there, though previously she attended the opening of the FA's St George's Park with William, so anything is possible.

And in Prince George news, there's a rumour doing the rounds that William and Kate have given their son an unusual nickname - after teabag brand PG Tips. Apparently friends have dubbed the baby PG (Prince George) and the first time parents added on 'Tips'. It certainly would be an unusual nickname if true. :)

Next we share news about two very popular Kate items which have been re-released due to popular demand caused by the 'Kate Effect'. The L.K. Bennett Darwin Sheepskin Jacket is back in stock in three colours (note the brown colourway is already out of stock). The popular piece is still available in black and sand, however, for the princely sum of £795.

Kate has worn the full collared jacket on numerous occasions. Below we see the Duchess in her shearling jacket at a football match on Christmas Eve in 2011.

Many fashionistas will be pleased to hear the talented ladies over at WKW have discovered Kate's ever-popular Russell and Bromley Charge It 2 Boots are available again. The £275 suede boots have not only been a staple of Kate's wardrobe for years but Carole's and Pippa Middleton's, too. The classic riding boots are elegant, sophisticated and perfect for day to night. As you can see there are minor differences  from the original "Charge It" boots, but the design remains the same.

The latest addition to the Royal Family graces the cover of Hello! this week - and no it's not Prince George - but Maud Elizabeth Daphne Marina daughter of The Lord and Lady (actress Sophie Winkleman) Frederik Windsor and granddaughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent who was born in Los Angeles. Baby Maud is now 42nd in line to the throne and the proud parents are looking forward to her and George being friends, with Sophie saying: "Perhaps we'll introduce the babies at Buckingham Palace for the Christmas lunch, that would be very sweet."

Hello! Magazine

It's been quite the year for royal babies hasn't it? Princess Madeleine of Sweden is twelve weeks pregnant with her first child and Monaco's Charlotte Casiraghi is expecting her first baby with boyfriend comedian Gad Elmlaeh.

Scottish news outlets are reporting there's a possibility William, Kate and George will attend this weekend's Braemar Gathering in Aberdeenshire. The event, which the Queen is patron of, is seen as the biggest date in the Highland Games calender. There's been no official word on this from the palace, but we do know the couple are said to be planning to take George to Balmoral to meet Prince Philip, so the two could tie in nicely.

Update: The Palace has confirmed the couple are not due to travel to Scotland this weekend and will not be attending the Braemer Gathering.

    1. Hello Emily J,

Thank you so much for visiting the blog (five times...wow) today. I generally aim to post at least 2-3 times per week and in all the time I've been blogging there's never been a day when there isn't something to write about. Sometimes there isn't much news but I like to update with whatever there is and throw in fashion updates, particularly for readers outside the UK where there isn't as much reporting on royal news.

  3. Thank you so much Charlotte for devoting a whole post to this. I am so glad that Prince William is making it his priority to respect his mother and introduce his child to his grandmother's family. I sure miss Diana and I can't imagine how much William does at this time when he is enjoying his new son. The timing of the film and reinvestigating of her death must be so hard on him. I am so glad that Diana's side of the family gets to see the child and will have an active role in the child's life and rightly so. Diana would be so proud of William and would approve of Kate. I sure wish Diana was alive today to hold George how beautiful that would have been she was such a beautiful person inside and out. I am glad William took the child to meet Diana at the grave as well it brings tears to my eyes. Rest in peace sweet Diana.

    1. Diana would have simply adored George and it must be so unimaginably difficult for William and Harry. Losing a parent so young must be terrible, but under the media spotlight it's an entirely more challenging situation. They're both very strong and clearly determined to keep her memory alive. Harry has been taking on some of Diana's causes too.

    2. Yes very true Charlotte I really cannot fathom it. :( Diana would be proud of Harry for all he is doing as well and how he has grown up into a great young man.

On an aside note I saw that they are making wax figures of Kate and William in Washington to be unveiled next week.

    3. Charlotte, you can view William's speech you quoted above on You Tube. It was from the Child Bereavement Charity's Mother's Day campaign in 2009 (I know you know this info, but other's might not). :) I've seen it a few times and it still brings tears to my eyes. **sigh** Diana would have adored George and Kate. She would be so happy with the young men her boys grew up to be. She is still greatly missed, but fortunately her boys will continue her legacy and I know make sure George knows what a beautifully gifted and loving person his grandmother was.

  5. My heart just breaks for William and Harry, especially around this time of year as they remember their mother. I can't imagine how horrible it must be to lose one's mom and I'm 56! It's simply tragic that William and Harry lost their mum when they were so young. <3 It's lovely that William & Kate have introduced George to the Spencer family.

I doubt I'll see the movie about Diana, at least in the theater...more due to ill health than other reasons. If it receives good reviews, I might watch it on Netflix. But I think Naomi Watts is in an extremely difficult place as it would be very hard to due justice to Diana's particular kind of charisma.

I so admire Kate for getting involved with the issue of children's hospice. It takes a very special kind of person to work with terminal patient of any age, but the important work that is done for such critically ill children can't be overemphasized.

"Tips" would definitely be a unique nickname! :o)

Thanks for another excellent post, Charlotte!

I'm so sorry to hear you're ill. I hope you're resting and taking good care of yourself.

I genuinely like Naomi Watts as an actress and always enjoy her movies. I think it was an unfortunate career move for her to take on this role. Diana is still very much alive in people's memories and from what I've heard the script leaves an awful lot to be desired in terms of accuracy.

  6. Another lovely post Charlotte---thank you.
It must be difficult for William and Harry just at this time, for the newspapers once more to be questioning how their mother died. I don't suppose they will see the film which is just out, but nevertheless it is difficult to avoid hearing of it,if one watches the news. How can they make up a story about something really known only to two people---one of whom is dead and one who has never spoken of it?
When a marriage breaks up, in my opinion, the children suffer more than anyone. Haven't these two young men suffered enough? To add insult to injury, whatever anyone's opinion of Diana was, she was a beauty, which this actress is not. Nothing wrong with her looks, but when she tries to recreate some of the iconic photos of Diana (eg the one at the minefield) she fails miserably.
Glad to note that the Hospice in Malaysia and EACH are still in touch with each other. I find that one of the most interesting aspects of their charitable work, that they seem to connect them all up, so they can share their own specialist knowledge.

Jean. Agreeing with you here. I'm thinking no-one can portray Diana. She had a hard life with the divorce of her parents , a very sensitive nature , perhaps a few learning difficulties. (perhaps alittle more right side brained -artsy ) all of these things I believe lead to her compassionite spirit. The thing people loved about her. For those who say she didn't have it hard because of money , clearly money doesn't buy you everything. I'm thinking no one can portray her spirit which truely is the essense of Diana and to do so is a cheap shot.
I am so thrilled with the patronages that Kate has chosen. Diana would be so proud of William and Kate and a fantastic Grandma.

Lovely post as always, feeling bad for Will and Harry, but I am shocked that W+K would use such a risky mode of transport as a helicopter especially with baby George:(

  8. I'm going to see it simply because I believe naomi played the part in order to honor diana. Its a movie, not a biography. It must have been incredibly challenging for her to try to live up to diana on screen. She originally said no to the part because she knew how challenging it would be to portray such an amazing person. So I think she deserves credit to choose a part not Many actors would take on. Plus the movie does not make diana look bad. The innacuracies should not stop anyone from honoring her.

On that note, I'm so excited to see kates style this season. I would love to be able to afford those warm dresses and coats. It gets cold in the colorado mountains.

Wow another great post from our Ms. Charlotte. You are just the best. I loved the post. I will not waste my money to see this movie out of respect for Diana and the boys. I wish they would just let her rest in peace. We all miss her but enough is enough. These poor boys can not get on with their lives with their mother always being in the news.

I wonder if William & Kate are going to take George to the wedding on the 14th? If she is breatfeeding and does not give him a bottle (this was stated in an article) then he must go with them. But we will not see him I bet, maybe they will bring the housekeeper to help.

I hope we see Kate during some point during William's footbal game at teh Palace. Maby when he is giving out the medals.

I love the fact that William & Kate are keping Diana's family in the loop with baby George. It is only right that they can be in his life. And I do not believe they have visited Diana's grave since George has been born.

Again Ms. Charlotte thank you for this great post. I always visit first thing in the morning then check thru out the day and evening. You always surprise us.

  13. Another great post!!! Thank you Charlotte! So many things to talk about....

I think it is lovely and very fitting that William, Kate, and George spent the weekend with his aunt and her family. I was thinking what a sad week this was 16 years ago and probably still is for William and Harry. Diana was laid to rest 16 years ago today. I bought my mother the Vanity Fair magazine with Diana gracing the cover and she cried. Diana had many problems and lived such a tragic life, but her beauty, transparency, and heart of gold still shine brightly. Hard to believe it's been 16 years. Her legacy lives on and as I said before, she would be SO very proud of her boys. I think she would just be beside herself being a grandmother and holding little George.

I have mixed feelings about the movie. Nothing will change my view of Diana, but frustrated that something with many "inaccuracies" is made. Not surprised, but frustrated. I feel so sad for William and Harry. There's always something that is constantly bringing back hurtful memories. I am thankful for their strength and resilience to continue to overcome the senseless tragedy and honor their mother's memory by staying close to the Spencer family and involving themselves with their mother's charities.

I love that Kate has chosen to be involved with children's hospices. Such a wonderful way to make a difference in so many lives. Such a precious picture from their Jubilee tour last year. That little boy whose face Kate is touching passed away not long after her visit. What a precious time for him and his family. Such sweet final memories made. Looking forward to the football match in BP Gardens! That will be SO exciting! Maybe the Cambridge family will all be present and little George will be all suited up in his football gear!

LOVE the LK Bennett Darwin jacket! It has always been a favorite of mine! Seems so versatile...could go dressy or casual! One Royal baby due to come is Zara Tindall's in the new year. Charlotte, have they given a time for the baby's arrival other than the new year? Hoping that the Cambridge family do visit Balmoral and some formal pictures are taken. I know there will be formal ones done at George's christening, but it would be lovely to see some before then. Speaking of, Charlotte, any news on the christening and when it might take place?

Again, so much to chat about! Thanks for the great post to get the weekend started off well! Have a wonderful weekend everyone!!! :)

  14. This post is full of informative news!!I admire the fact that William is maintaining relations with his mother's side of the family, out of respect for his mother. But even I did not think the helicopter would've been a safe option. PG Tips is such a cute nickname! It would be interesting to see how George responds to this nickname when he gets older. The FA's 150 anniversary celebrations seems like a grand event, I would be surprised if Kate would not attend. Kate's winter wear choices are excellent, however way over my budget! Maybe if they come on sale or if there is a repliKate, then I may consider making a purchase!About the Naomi Watts movie, I agree with you Charlotte, It was not a wise career move. I won't see the movie. I'm not interested in a fictionalized, made-up depiction of a real person who has real relatives still mourning her death at a young age. I feel sorry for her sons, constantly bombarded with so much publicity about the mother they have lost.

    Hello!

I am having a good day. First, I find this lovely update, thanks Charlotte! Then I went shopping for a new outfit for a big company meeting I have to go to and scored this awesome Repli-Kate. While not the same, it worked so well for me, that another lady saw it and bought one too. For those of you that have Kohls around you in the US or want to see if they do international shipping, I found a purple dress that reminds me of Kate's Issa dresses but was way better quality than the Banana Republic ones and they do come in blue. The best part was that it was on clearance! Here is a link: http://www.kohls.com/product/prd-1358938/chaps-surplice-faux-wrap-dress.jsp

  17. I'm so glad that William has kept in touch with Diana's family. This must be such a bittersweet time for him. Diana would be so proud and over the moon right now.

And it must be difficult enough for William and Harry to deal with strangers making money on books and movies about Diana, but to have their mother's character attacked by someone from the inside who is trying to rewrite history is despicable IMO.

Very precious taking Kate and. George to spend time with with Diana's side of the family .Perhaps visiting grave sight ? That must be so very painful.
It doesn't help to have a movie to bring back the painful memories of your mom brought up. People are so insensitive. $$$ yep that's the only thing I can say about the movie. Yes I still like Naomi Watts as an actress but.......doubt I will ever see it. Maybe when I'm confined to a wheelchair with nothing to do then , I will set all the old folk straight with the correct details. Blah. Blah....

Lovely post, Charlotte! I do not want to see this movie. I was 16 when Diana married and just hero worshipped her. Just the thought of her death still makes me tear up. I, too, like Naomi Watts, however, I have issues with the subject matter of this movie in that much of her relationship with this man is unknown. I just do not want to be upset. My not watching the movie is my way of honoring Diana's truth, if you will! Keep up the fantastic work on this site! Just love it! I'm sure last weekend was a very emotional one for William and Harry. I'm glad William had the time to go visit his aunt that particular day... I think it was very comforting to him.
I'm thinking about watching the Diana movie... When she died I was 9 years old, so I don't remember much about her... I guess it would be nice to watch that movie, even though I've heard it's not a reliable story!

    4. I've only seen one photo of Kate in open-toed, flat summer sandals, it was published about a month ago, I think it was taken by a passerby and was from summer 2012 or summer 2011 or maybe even earlier. She's wearing a dark summery dress and flat sandals and was out on errands. I think part of the reason we rarely see her in flat shoes at official engagements is because she's not quite as tall as has been reported. The heels give her the height to look leggy and taller, especially when she's at engagements with William.

    5. Elizabeth I've never actually thought about it like that. I always heard that Kate is 5'10. But since you almost always see her in heels you have no way of knowing these things. Do you remember where you saw the picture at?

  27. TONS of news for the Kate Club, from the Prince Andrew incident at Buck House to the DM story that Kate isn't in favor of Harry marrying Cressida Bonas due to William's unrequited love for Cressida's sister, Isabella Gough-Calthorpe, during the 2007 breakup. Then, Vanity Fair reporting that the move to Bucklebury pre- and post-birth, was Kate and Carole's idea that William, of course, went along with, and was not entirely approved of by Queen Elizabeth II due to the enormous expense. I know that to breathe a whisper of criticism against Kate or the Middletons is heresy - and I doubt this gets published here - on here but quite a bit for objective royal fans to chew on in the last few days!

    1. The incident with Andrew qualifies as news. But the rest is just a royal expert doing what she does best...stirring the pot with made up ingredients in lieu of real sources and facts. But no reason to let details get in the way. :)

    2. @Elizabeth- As a fan of Catherine and William and living in London I do not believe a word that is written about them. First as you may know that they are a very private couple and the people aound them keep they mouths closed and do not speak to anyone regardign the royal couple. The information in the Daily Mail is nothing but a lot of junk. The story in Vanity Fair is from a book Katie Nicholls wrote which is nothing but a bunch of trash. She has alot of unfound truth in her book. And there again not oneof their close friends will ever talk about them nor what is going on in their little world.

So as one who live's in London I can tell you that this is all a bunch of trash. They have nothign better to do then write this stuff to fill space in a magazine, newspaper or inline space. So I would tell you not to believe a word of it.

  28. I think the queen no doubt had some reservations about the whole Bucklebury thing. Who wouldn't have? The logistics of the scenario would dictate that as that entailed ALOT. They obviously got the kinks worked out because they did go to Bucklebury. AND, if the queen had had any remaining doubt about that they would not have gone to Bucklebury at that time. She even dictated what uniform William would wear to the wedding. The one he wore was not his choice and he said he had some discussions with her regarding that and said that of course what she says goes. So, yes, the queen probably was not happy about the Bucklebury intinerary at first.

As for Isabella, she was invited to the royal wedding but was not invited to the reception. There is alot of information online about that. would Kate counsel Harry about his love life? Perhaps. However, Isabella is married to Sam Branson. Sam's sister, Holly, is a good friend of Kates. So is her father, Richard,(virgin records tycoon). How she could successfully keep Isabella away from William is food for thought. The aristocratic circles are close ones. Would she like to keep her away from William? I believe the answer is of course she would. Isabella is beautiful. How do you feel when one of your husband's attractive former interests is in close proximity to your husband? Be honest now. :) Good for Kate that Isabella is married now to the man she had been with for a long time and is apparently totally in love with. If Kate is counseling Harry with any doubt towards Cressida, it is probably for other reasons. Cressida's home life has not been the most stable, for example. That may give Kate some doubt, as Harry wants children and a stable home life.

Wherever we are on the planet, we all probably know by now not to take anything we read or hear in the media as fact. Often though, there is some thread of truth in some of it. Being discerning and educated about the topics we are interested in certainly helps us stay peaceful and not tossed by every wind of whisper of change.

    1. I imagine the queen was concerned about many things re buckleberry but most of all the cost of the security to the tax payer. Will n Kate's visit to cambridge for the day was £68k extra cost to the tax payer for security for example.

  29. There simply is a lot we don't know.

We don't know for sure whether William went to visit his aunt. That story is based on a single supposed witness to the helicopter. Could be true or not true. Lovely if it was.

We don't know whether the queen approved or disapproved of taking George to Bucklebury. Many here have assumed she approved but there is no reason to think so. Clearly, her children and grandchildren have often done things she didn't approve of and she couldn't or didn't interfere. Likely that she would be concerned about cost, but we don't know how she felt otherwise.

We don't know how Kate feels about Cressida. Suspect Kate may not love whoever Harry marries (unless it was Pippa) since she is quite close to her brother-in-law, but she will no doubt accept whoever it turns out to be graciously. Will the same be true of Donna Air in the unlikely event James marries her?

A lot of the articles are very gossipy but recalling from the Diana days, it is worth remembering that some of the most outlandish sounding claims from that time turned out to be true. So the gossip never can be dismissed completely.

Lovely photos of the Kents and little Maud. Wish we had similar photos of George. While Hello does pay, they do produce great photos and avoid the worst of the gossip.

    1. That's very true re your comment about diana. At the Time we really thought those paper reports weren't true regarding diana and fergie plus Charles and camilla but they all turned out to be true and what a circus that was.

  30. Hello to the lovely Charlotte who keeps us all up to date and all Duchess Kate blog Readers, I visited Holyrood Palace this weekend in Edinburgh, Scotland which is the working Palace of Her Majesty the Queen when she is in Scotland. I included a few pictures on my blog from the interior tour, the exterior Abbey, and Prince's George's sparkling commemorative China for sale in the gift shop (it is gorgeously gold-plated and baby blue). Thought you would enjoy the connection, here's the link to my blog, "Rose Knows": http://emilyroseschiller.blogspot.co.uk/2013/09/edinburgh.html
