Kate Loves: Shoes - Part 1

Kate has a fabulous collection of shoes and boots; she generally opts for pairs that will go with almost anything ensuring she gets the optimum wear out of them. Unlike many people in the public eye she doesn't debut a new pair of heels at every function, instead choosing favourite styles from her own collection to complete looks. Because of this, certain styles have become indelibly associated with the Duchess - none more so than the iconic L.K. Bennett 'Sledge' Pump.

The taupe shoes are undoubtedly Kate's go-to choice. They're obviously very versatile as the Duchess wore them throughout the Canada Tour in 2011 and the South-East Asia tour last year - two very different climates (on an off topic note, I couldn't help but admire the quality of the Erdem and Temperley lace dresses below).

Indeed, the pumps have proved so popular royal photographer James Whatling took a close-up shot of the Sledges following relentless a couple of casual requests when Kate removed them during a visit to a mosque in Kuala Lumpur.

The patent leather platform court shoe have become incredibly popular thanks to the 'Kate Effect' and are worn by businesswomen who want a comfortable yet stylish shoe for work wear and by others for an evening out or formal events such as weddings and parties. It is thought Kate owns several pairs in different colours. They come in a vast array of colours now, from practical hues such as BlackPeacock and Clay...

L.K. Bennett

...to more vibrant shades including LemonGlitter and Red Currant (currently reduced from €329 to €197).

L.K. Bennett

The Sledge pumps are not the only L.K. Bennett style the Duchess wears. Below we see Kate in the brand's 'Art' shoe. Not the most eye-catching shoe the brand has produced but a very practical choice for the couple's final pre-wedding engagement in 2011 and a nice match for the Amanda Wakeley suit.

For the ARK Gala in 2011, Kate chose the very pretty L.K. Bennett Agata sandals.

We know Kate loves her wedges. They're comfortable yet stylish with the bonus of additional height. One of her favourite pairs are her black L.K. Bennett Greta wedges . The Duchess has worn them on several occasions, most notably the days before and after the royal wedding.

The Maddox is an incredibly similar shoe, creating a modern silhouette with a summery twist. The wedges are currently reduced from £175 to £125 at L.K. Bennett and also come in taupe.

L.K. Bennett

The Duchess looked radiant at a charity polo match in Santa Barbara in 2011 wearing the L.K. Bennett Sandy sandals.

From the Product Description:

'The Sandy sandal from L.K. Bennett epitomises the discreet charm of the bourgeoisie: an absolute gem on account of its classic and seductive allure, and its quality. This fabulous glossy leather winds finely crafted leather straps over the instep, supported by a stiletto heel.

The Duchess debuted a new pair of shoes by the much loved British label at a reception this year - the L.K. Bennett Harper in light taupe. The closed suede court has a concealed platform, which adds height and definition to the Harper. The stylish dress shoe is on sale at the moment, reduced from £195 to £115.

Kate has been getting quite a lot of wear from her Episode 'Angel' pumps this year. She wore them to a series of engagements throughout her pregnancy. They are no longer available unfortunately, however the Episode range is stocked at House of Fraser - at the moment a limited selection of footwear is available at affordable prices. Kate teamed her pair with a polka dot Topshop dress for a fun filled visit to the Warner Bros studios in April.

For red carpet events we regularly see Kate in Jimmy Choo designs such as her Vamp Sandals.

The dazzling sandals feature crisscross straps of glitter-infused fabric, an adjustable strap with buckle closure and a high heel of 4 1/2" with a 1" platform. They are made in Italy and retail for €616.

Nordstrom

We also regularly see the Duchess selecting her Jimmy Choo 'Cosmic' Pumps for engagements and formal functions.

Jimmy Choo

The black suede pumps are beautiful shoes. The striking closed toe platform heel is made in Italy and the heel height measures 4.7" with a 1.2" platform. They're sophisticated, chic and black works with everything. The shoes perfectly complimented Kate's gorgeous Alexander McQueen strapless gown at the Sun Military Awards in 2011. The whole look was one of Kate's most regal in my opinion.

A look at Kate's Rupert Sanderson Malone pumps.

Kate is a fan of Prada pumps and has them in black, pink and blue suede with a pointed toe and square footbed.

Another brand the Duchess favours is Emmy Shoes. Kate has a few pairs of suede pumps and matching clutches by the brand. Pippa Middleton is also a fan; below we see Kate's brown pair.

In Part 2, we'll be looking at Kate's casual shoes and her (to die for) collection of boots. For our new readers we've had similar posts on Kate's apparel and beauty favourites:

We expect to see you tomorrow (Monday) when a certain set of official pictures are due to be released according to reports surfacing in the past couple of hours :)

Kate is absolutely gorgeous! It's fun walking down memory lane looking at her shoes and beautiful wears. There are things I like about each shoe, but my favorite is the LK Bennett Agata. I remember seeing her walk in the ARK gala that night looking amazing and me noticing her shoes right off. I LOVE them! Thanks for the great post Charlotte! Such a treat!

On a much sadder note, there is new evidence the Met Police are assessing into the death of Princess Diana. Goodness. Makes me so sad for William and Harry and at such a difficult time with the anniversary of her death approaching. Will she ever rest in peace? Charlotte, have you heard of this or have any info?

Also read that the Cambridges are together again in Anglesey. I hope their last days there can be a relaxing and enjoyable time. SO looking forward to the pictures of little George being released. Excited to see how's he changed in 4 weeks! :-)

    1. Kate, I agree. My thoughts are with William and Harry too. This should be a happy new chapter for BOTH of them as they enjoy their new roles as father and uncle. Having said that, I do believe that any CREDIBLE information (and only time will tell) should be looked into.

Royalfan, I absolutely agree IF it is credible information, it absolutely should be looked at. Just at such a hard time with the anniversary approaching. Why do these people surface now and then instead of coming out with information at the first inquest?

      Delete
    3. Kate, why not at the inquest indeed. Was someone afraid to come forward (for personal or professional reasons)? Who knows.

Whatever comes of this, I do believe that William and Harry will continue to face these types of stories for the rest of their lives. IMO, this is not unlike what JFK's children (now Caroline) have had to live with.

    1. How sweet Sarah, it sounds beautiful. I'm totally torn about styles/silhouettes but with the help of the bridesmaid team and their advice I'll get there. Speaking of Kate's wedding shoes, what a fabulous suggestion. I'll add a special segment on them at the end of Part 2!

Sarah, the LK Bennett Agata shoes were my favorite too! Great minds think alike! I'll have to hop on FB and see the dress you posted. Charlotte, I'm so incredibly excited for you! A wedding is such a fun and memorable celebration! Whatever style you choose for a dress, you will be stunning. :-) The minute I put my dress on in the bridal shop, I knew it was the dress. I felt gorgeous...like a princess. I absolutely loved it! I wish we could all head across the pond to celebrate your big day! You deserve ALL the very best! I'm sure all of us in "your fan club" feel the same way!

    1. Funny you mention that I tried to see on the Agata ones I think it's 38 or 39 as it didn't look like a 40 and doesn't resemble my 37 but I don't know and would love to find out!

    2. Don't you think a size 39 (size 6 in States) would be to small for her height? I don't know just wondering.

    3. My conversion chart says 39 is more like an 8.5 in the states. I am about as tall as her and I wear around that size so 8.5 makes sense.

  9. Can anyone see: What size shoe does Kate wear?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Anonymous 11:26, I could be wrong but I don't think Kate is a 39. I am from the States and looked at a shoe size conversion chart for the UK. A 39 would be a size 6 in the States. With Catherine's height, I would be very surprised for her foot to be so tiny. Anyone from the UK care to comment about the shoe size? Charlotte, is her foot that small?

      Delete
    2. Hello, Anonymous!
Well, if you google it, you'll find some photos from the Agatha sandals that clearly shows that she wears 39.
I completely agree with you, I would expect her feet to be bigger than that, but I honestly think that Catherine is not that tall... She's always wearing heels so I think people maybe overestimate her height!

      Ana B. from Brazil

    3. I am the same height (170 cm) and have the same size of the shoe. I am so slim like she. But my feet look too big for me (really). Wish I had 38. Shoes and feet in that size look much better. But nice to hear my feet can look small for others :)

      Delete
    4. Sorry - should be 178 cm

      Delete
    5. I actually wear a size 39, which would be a size 7.5 or 8 in the states. I'm only 5'4" so it's still a little surprising that her feet would be that small. She has to be at least 6 inches taller than me...

      Delete
    6. Diane from Boston19 August 2013 18:20

According to Zappo's, a European size 39 would translate to a US size 8-1/2.

  20. The jewelry Kate wore with her black velvet Sarah Burton gown gives me hope that when the time comes, she will give up her minimalist jewelry for the real thing in the Queen's vaults.

The shoes are another matter. It actually deforms the female foot to wear such high heels. In her forties or fifties, Kate will need foot surgery to correct those deformities. I wish it were not the style for young and middle aged women to wear shoes that are bad for their health.

  23. Fabulous post, Charlotte! I LOVE the Kate Loves Series :-) I guess I never thought of Kate having such a collection of pumps (although it is probably still considered a small collection to most women in the public eye). It seems like she just wears the same couple of pairs, but apparently she goes with a similar style in all her pumps. It makes complete sense as she is probably aiming to make sure that her shoes aren't the most eye-catching part of her ensembles. Thanks Charlotte! Can't wait to see the "official" photos!!!

  24. This was very interesting to me, because I too didn't realize she had so many different pairs in similar styles and colors. I love shoes and wore the highest heels I could find (because I'm quite short) all through my 20s and 30s. Then my feet began to hurt too much and in my 40s and 50s my heels got lower and lower! Fortunately I haven't had to endure any foot surgeries. I did (and still do) quite a lot of foot exercises to help stave off that bad news. But Kate's still young and she's got great muscles, so she can still wear these beautiful shoes without (we hope) injury.

I'm anxious to see the photos Monday. Very exciting!

  37. If I remember rightly when I saw the wedding dress on display at Buckingham Palace in 2011 her shoes were a size 39, definitely not a 40 (my friend knelt/laid on the floor to look on the underside of the shoe in the display cabinet to check the size)!!

As for the shoes here and as I've said before, I really hate the Sledge pumps - words cannot begin to describe just how much! I also dislike all the Jimmy Choo's shown above and the Angel pumps. i so wish she would go shoe shopping with Crown Princess Mary of Denmark - she ALWAYS gets the shoes just right. I think the problem with Kate's choice is she always seems to choose a rounded toe and they just seem to lack the elegance that a slightly more refined toe has. Anyway, it's my only criticism, everything else is just about perfect!

I got up this morning at 3am (but had to wait until 5am for the interview) to see the interview with Prince William and I would do it again. He was so open and the love he has for his wife & son just showed in his eyes and the way he talked about them. I can not wait until Sept. 15th to see the rest of it. All I can say is William is one proud husband & new daddy.

And now I can not wait until the finally release the photos. They sure have been teasing us...lol But I bet they will be worth the wait.

  42. This was a fun post to read! I love seeing the shoes that Kate wears. Charlotte, I am glad you will feature her wedding shoes in the next Kate Loves segment because I have always wondered what she wore!

I bought a pair of shoes similar to the LK Bennett Greta wedges (now Maddox), but I have not seen many photos of Kate wearing them. I would love to see what outfits she wore with them. To date, I have only seen photos of 3 occasions when she's worn them: out shopping (I think before the wedding), the day before her wedding in a photo with her sister and mom, and the photo with Prince William the day after the wedding. Charlotte, are there any other photos out there? By the way, does she even own a pair of the Maddox shoes? I've only seen photos of her in the Greta wedges.

I love the suede shoes! I would love to own a pair of brown ones. I can't wear high heels and wouldn't have anywhere to wear them to anyway, but I really enjoy imagining what it would be like to own a pair.

I have to say that the closeup photo of the Sledge pumps was my favorite because it was a surprise and made me chuckle. I have always wondered if Kate secretly wears extra padding in her shoes to make them comfortable to walk in and the photo shows no such additions! ;-)

Can't wait to see the new family photos!

  43. I love those LK Bennett shoes. At age 63 I have had to give up such high heels for the sake of my creaky knees, but I did adore wearing the sky high styles in years past.

Was able to see the preview of Prince William's interview on CNN this morning. Looking forward to the entire show in September. Poor thing, they did focus on his large bald spot every time they showed the presenter's face. William seems so happy and centered, it is wonderful to know fatherhood agrees with him.

Lovely interview with William about the baby--says George is a little rascal and Catherine is marvellous.
I will have to sit up late tonight---hoped we would have photos today until I saw that some of the Queen as a toddler had been released.
Catherine's wedding shoes were gorgeous and I think they were 39--got cross-eyed trying to see. It is easier to wear very high heels if you have a longer foot.

Hi everyone! As usual, I adored this "Kate loves" post! My favorites are the Sledge and the taupe LK Bennett, the Greta Wedges. And of course those cute little Agata Sandals. I wish I would have a pair of those babies!

We actually have an LK Bennett store here, in Lisbon, but I never shopped there (I know I'll be off my head with joy if I ever go to that store). ;)

Speaking of "Kate Loves", I'm wating for a "Kate Loves: Hats" post! But no pressure! :)) I'm joking. Great job, dear Charlotte!

Hugs from a very (too much) hot Portugal!

Oh, I forgot to mention: about the baby and family photos about to be released, maybe they will release them this thursday, 22nd, when little George is precisely one month old...?

I found the shoe collection to be quite interesting. But for me I can't wear those types of shoes anymore due to having my knees replacement. I give Kate credit wearing that high of heel during pregnancy. Yes I am sad for William and Harry to go through another investigation bring up memories from the past of thei precious mummy. It's fair if the truth comes out if not leave them alone let Diana rest in peace.

I love the way you said that William seems so happy and centered. Centered is the right word I think. All criticisms aside, William and Catherine, to me, are such giving and open people. PR is one thing, but genuine warmth and caring are another and they have generously and graciously combined both successfully in my opinion.

William's ever ready sense of humor is a joy and will help get him through any hurt or angst of the new news regarding the passing of his mother.
My prayer has been all long that the truth about that would come out. I never had a peace that the previous investigation was correct. I had studied information on the Henri Paul and the investigation's profile on him just did not correlate with the other information I finding.

I am so excited to see the photos of baby George and to find out whether they mixed family photos with more formal ones or not.

Thanks for the post on Kate's shoes. I hope that once you have decided on your gown (how fun), that after the wedding you might bless us with a photo.
I love weddings and just about all things bridal. :)

I am so glad that Carole got to help them get settled in in Anglesey. I am even happier to learn that they are there now, just the three of them, (along with Antonella), to really make their primary family unit a more cohesive one.
They will reap the blessings from that in the future I am sure. :)

    1. Yes unfortunately someone has leaked grainy screenshots. The official high quality ones will not be available until midnight and as soon as they are I'll post with details. I'd like to respect the embargo, as many in the media and undoubtedly the Palace will be disappointed with this.

    2. Charlotte, I accidentally saw the pictures on my Tumblr feed and they were high quality ones! You're so right to respect the embargo... I totally support you're decision and know that your readers will agree with it.

    3. First, I think the invasion of privacy (my view of this) is disgusting and how sad that their baby is less than a month old before he is the victim of it.

Second, (and I hope this doesn't sound hypocritical) I also believe that the longer they waited to release the photos the more likely it was that this might happen. The birth announcement was tweeted to prevent a leak before BP did it the old fashioned way; here I do believe they gambled a bit. Just my opinion...

  55. Oh Charlotte someone has now posted the official non grainy photos. I wonder how they get them out so early must be people who sadly got paid off near the royal family :( they cant trust anyone can they?

  56. Charlotte, I've just sent you a message. I hope you have received it.
I'm clicking on people's profiles to become friends but it does not seem to work so for instance I have no Duchess Kate friends.
    What am to do then?
Thank you to anyone who would like to help me.
    A nice day to all!

  57. I prefer the originals, taken by Mike Middleton, and the blowup of George, taken from an original.

I don't believe Ive ever seen Kate as happy. Clearly, motherhood and being surrounded by the love of her parents suits her. What a winning smile in the photo which includes Lupo.

Kates beauty is frequently downplayed; lots of photoshopping. --OK, either the Rebublican movement is working overtime, or, most probably, Charlies press gang is. These photos, although far from perfect, are true. Love them.
