Proud Parents William and Kate Present Their Son to the World!

Proud parents William and Kate left St. Mary's hospital with their newborn son at 7.15 p.m. this evening.

The atmosphere was electric and we all waited with bated breath as the doors of the Lindo Wing opened.

Amid a flurry of photographers' flashes the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge emerged onto the steps of the Lindo Wing and introduced their beautiful baby to the world.

Initially Kate held the baby in her arms as they walked out and posed for a few moments before she carefully handed him over to William.

And I'm sure you'll all agree grandmother Carole Middleton was spot on when she said the Prince is "absolutely beautiful". He certainly is!

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Website

A thrilled William and Kate walked over to the press pen and spoke about their son:

'The Duchess said: "It's been very emotional. It's very special. Any parent will know what this feeling is like." While Prince William revealed: "He's a big boy, quite heavy. We're still working on a name. He has a pair of lungs on him that's for sure."
Confirming the Prince was overdue the new father said: "I will remind him of his tardiness when he's older," and with a broad smile William added, "He's got her looks thankfully" to which the Duchess replied, "No, no, no, I'm not sure about that." The Prince also jokingly said, "He has more hair than me."

Already a hands on dad, William has changed a diaper and Kate thinks "he's very good at it." When quizzed about the baby's name William said they don't know yet, but when asked if they had decided to call their baby George he replied, "Wait and see."

Kate was admitted to St Mary's yesterday morning at 5.30 a.m. and gave birth at 4.24 p.m. William and Kate spent four hours alone with their baby, before sharing the news with the world at 8.30 p.m. Those first hours must have been incredibly special and memorable for both of them. William elected to spend the night at the hospital with his wife and son choosing to release a short statement, reading simply: "We could not be happier."

The Cambridges thanked staff at St Mary's in a statement for taking such excellent care of "the three of them" and before they departed the couple said goodbye to senior medical teams who looked after them so well.

While we don't know the baby's name yet we do know his title is His Royal Highness Prince (NAME) of Cambridge. The third-in-line to the throne and future King will one day be the reigning constitutional monarch of 16 sovereign states. The prince shares a birthday with actors Terence Stamp and Rhys Ifans.

One of our lovely readers is a knitting enthusiast and shared the baby's shawl is reportedly the £45 Super-Fine Wool Merino Christening Shawl by G.H. Hurt & Son. The company made two dozen shawls for the birth of Prince Charles.

G.H. Hurt & Son

The Prince's first swaddle was the Jungle Jam Print by Australian brand Aden + Anais. The 100% cotton swaddles comes in a four pack for £50 and can also be used a burp cloth, nursing and strolling cover.

An adorable moment shared by the Daily Mail:

'The Prince was heard to affectionately call Kate 'Poppet' as he ushered her back to the Lindo Wing'.

The couple emerged on the top step and posed for photos before going back inside to put the baby in his car seat before  making their way to Kensington Palace, where they reside in Nottingham Cottage. It was reported Pippa Middleton and her boyfriend Nico Jackson were waiting at the Palace. It is very much expected they will spend time in Bucklebury with the Middleton family in the near future.

We saw a very similar scene outside St Mary's thirty-one years ago when Charles and Diana introduced William to the world. It seems an appropriate time to mention the late Diana, as she would have been a wonderful grandmother and a strong influence on the little prince's life; no doubt she is there in spirit.

Carole and Mike Middleton were the first visitors at the Lindo Wing this afternoon; grandmother Carole said the first cuddle was "amazing". Shortly afterwards Charles and Camilla paid a brief visit and it was the Prince of Wales who revealed we would be seeing the family emerge this evening: "He's marvellous, you'll see for yourselves soon."

You can watch videos at ITN SourceYoutube and The BBC.

The Duchess looked beautiful in a bespoke cornflower blue crépe de chine dress by British designer Jenny Packham and I'm sure you'll agree she was positively glowing. I had thought we would see Kate opt for blue to mark the birth of her son.

Kate teamed her polka dot dress with her Pied A Terre Imperia Wedges.

It's been a wonderful and unforgettable couple of days. Baby Cambridge is simply beautiful and William and Kate could not have looked happier. I am delighted for them and know they will be incredible parents. One moment I want to share with you in particular: when William put the baby in the back of the car you could see Kate talking to the baby and touching its hands; a very sweet moment indeed.

Thank you all so much for following the blog over the past number of days and throughout Royal Baby watch! x

    4. I'm sure they had "two" official announcements ready... one for a girl and one for a boy.

    5. Yes, I think so, two option for the official announcement - they wouldn´t have given away they actually had knew in such a dull way. I really think they didn´t know and want to be surprised. However, the think with the Duchess dress stroke me to....but its very simpl cut, maybe Jenny Packham had two cloth prepared, pink and blue and the Duchess´measures +- and in the moment they called her it is a boy, she sewed the blue one..? Or Duchess would have appeared in baby blue even if she had a girl (as her bogaboo? Because baby blue is suitable for girl more than pink for boy, in case?) We never know :)
The couple was really sweet and cute and Kate has enviable inner calm... I hope they tell us the baby´s name soon!

Congratulations William and Kate! What a wonderful, wonderful baby! It's soooo beautiful to see you all radiant and happy, I am sooo happy for you!
And you dear Charlotte, as usual were super fast to cover the news, although you must be terribly tired!!!
I only have one question to you all, given I'm sure by the fact I still did not have children: In the pictures today Kate still has a pretty big bump. Is this normal? Does the bump not go away directly after the birth? Sorry... I just do not know how it works... Thank you so much for your kind feedback.

    1. Re bump: A good bit of the bump remains for a few days and then gradually disappears in the coming weeks after birth, faster if the mother is breastfeeding.
Kate looks absolutely fantastic for someone who has given birth the day before - and it is also normal to still have a smaller bump.

      Delete
    2. Hi Karin,

I'm no expert but an expert on the tv today said it's @ 10 days for the uterus to retract back into the pelvis (bump to go down)...breast feeding helps too apparently.

      I hope this helps...

      Delete
    3. That is entirely normal. A few days of breastfeeding will have that bump eliminated and ( nearly) back to normal.

      Delete
    4. Absolutely normal, you will NOT fit into your prepreggo jeans the day after giving birth!

      Delete
    5. It is completely normal to still look about 6 months pregnant after giving birth. It takes several weeks for the uterus to contract back to pre-pregnancy size. I think it's about average for a woman to gain 30 pounds during pregnancy and the baby and placenta usually only comprises about half that weight gain.

      Delete
    6. i wonder if the bump may have been a bit bigger because she was carrying a big baby, and (perhaps) for longer than full term.

  14. The Duchess's dress is not only weather appropriate, it ties in with the Catherine Walker maternity dress worn by Diana so the pictures of the two births thirty-one years apart will complement each other.

Penelope Cruz also had a daughter yesterday. Fun to imagine this new prince linking up someday with a beautiful Spanish girl born on the same day.

An officer looked up and talked into a radio on his shoulder, motioning to others outside of the shot. Shortly after Prince William came out and put the baby into the Range Rover.

    1. You are right! It looks like they have him swaddled in the blanket and strapped in. Big no-no. Hopefully it was just a one-time thing and they'll get some lessons soon! :-)

Anonymous: I'm not being picky, just informative. The carseat carrier was fine. It was the straps inside the carseat carrier that were not right. Babies should not be swaddled in the carrier. If they need a blanket, you strap/buckle them in then put the blanket over them....or use a special swaddle wrap designed for it. I'm sure they probably were in a hurry and I'm sure someone has already helped them learn the right way to do it!

  38. I watched the short video of them presenting their little prince to the world and it was so sweet. Kate was obviously exhausted but radiant and William looked so giddy, he was just beaming! I loved how he stroked her back the whole time she was holding Baby Cambridge and posing for pictures, and the funny "Phew!" he gave once he settled him safely in the back of the car with his mum.

I read a lot of comments on how this is just a woman having a baby, and why all the fuss. There were also a lot of bad jokes on TV. I myself am from a country without a royal family (anymore) and while I do believe the concept of monarchy is outdated and will probably fade (as a ruling system) in the next century, these are good sweet people who are basically demanded to live their life in the spotlight and they are doing such a fabulous job and so much good for their country and not only. They are celebrating a magical time in their lives and they did not ask for any of us to take part in it, but seeing as we all are, let's enjoy this privilege and just say "Congratulations!"

I wish Baby Cambridge a wonderful, full life, and may he carry the privilege, as well as the burden, of royalty, with dignity, joy and strength.

(PS: Dear Charlotte, you’re amazing and a sweetheart and I so wish there was another person like you out there to run an equally fabulous blog on Prince Harry, so I could do all my (loving) stalking in one place instead of all over the internet! LOL)

Ms. Charlotte- I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this great coverage of the royal birth. You have been the best (and still are)through out the whole pregnacny.

The beautiufl royal couple looked just proud to present their Baby Boy Cambridge to the world. The duchess looked just beautiful as always, and William looked so proud of his Duchess and baby boy. All of this had brought tears to my eyes.

I loved the way William kept his arm around his Duchess. It just shows how much in love he is with his beautiful wife. And the look's the Duchess gave him which just again tells the world this is the man I married and is totally in love with. Now I have his baby.

Also I love how William was like any other new dad taking his wife & baby home from the hospital. Putting him in his car seat, taking him out and putting him in the car and then driving home with is wife and new baby.

Congrats again to William & Kate on the birthof your beautiful baby boy.

The baby is beautiful and Kate and William look very very happy. I had tears in my eyes when I saw the pictures :) Now I'll watch the video several times. Soooo happy for them!!!

Thanks for covering the exciting days! It was a pleasure to share the excitement :) Hopefully the babys name will soon be announced.

And the Duchess' dress is beautiful! Good choice :) I was wondering if she might be wearing the Topshop Polka Dot dress, so it's a quite similar dress she has chosen and very appropriate :)

  51. I have been keeping up with your blog since you first began, but I have never commented until now. The photographs are absolutely beautiful and I love that HRH wore a polka dot dress just like Princess Diana. It brought tears to my eyes, as I wish that she were here on Earth to see and hold her newborn grandson. I am sure she is smiling down on him from Heaven.

I also noticed in the close up picture of the new prince that he has his mother's exact nose! :)

Thank you so much for your wonderful blog. Reading about the awe-inspiring things that Duchess Kate does (and of course what she wears) makes me want to be a better person. She is a great role model for women of all ages around the world.

  54. Beautiful pictures! They look so happy and the baby is adorable.
Many couples have already or will eventually share this experience of having a first baby so in my opinion Will and Kate's experience is not really any different or particularly amazing. But having to share this with the whole word is a feat for sure. Although you could tell Kate was emotional she handled it well.

They both looked relaxed, in love and over the moon with happiness. I wish them all a long, happy and healthy life! Thank you, Charlotte for the amazing job you do! Cheers, everyone! I'm so glad they shared their new prince with us. As a new mom your protective instincts go into over drive! I didn't want anyone to hold my daughter when she was first born, I can't imagine how on edge Kate was walking out that door. But she did beautifully! And she looked stunning having just given birth!
Hopefully they get to fully enjoy these next few weeks- they are so special. God bless them :)

  59. What a beautiful family! They could not be happier, as William stated last night.

I think Kate's dress was a lovely tribute to Diana, just as Carole Middleton's dress from the royal wedding. Classy and sweet.

And how nice that the Middleton's were able to visit before Charles and Camilla. I don't know if it was planned, but it was a nice change from the expected formality.

She seemed quite overwhelmed with emotion for just a brief moment and then her beautiful smile took over and all was well. But wasn't it a wonderful two days. They looked so in love and very happy with their new baby boy. I just get over it that it seem's like yesterday they announced that they were going to be parents and now they have their bundle of joy. And finally I just loved all the pictures of this beautiful family. It jsut brought tears to my eyes when I look at teh pictures of Kate looking up at William with so much love in her eyes and tehn the way William look's at his wife. These two have it right.

  69. Princess Kate and Prince William, you have just entered into one of the many beautiful parts of being married. You two are beautiful and so many look up to you. 70. Hello, according to the media release of the Prince of Wales' website the royal baby will be styled HRH Prince [Name] of Cambridge, not [Name] Prince of Cambridge http://www.princeofwales.gov.uk/news-and-diary/the-duchess-of-cambridge-has-been-delivered-of-son

My understanding is that Camridge is Dukedom, not a Principality, otherwise the Duke and Duchess of Camridge would be the Prince and Princess of Cambridge. Either way, just as Prince William was Prince William of Wales, not William Prince of Wales, the baby would be Prince [Name] of Cambridge as he is of it through his parents, it is not his dukedom.

  71. I think they did an excellent job presenting the baby to the
world. I think Kate was tearing up during the entire presentation
and who can blame her. a kazillion cameras, a kazillion opinions
and it isnt just you but the baby that is subject to all those
opinions also now. That would be a difficult thing to do.
Also, I am glad that Carole spoke on the occasion of the birth
of her first grandchild, but for her own peace of mind, I pray
that she and the rest of Kate's family continue with their
original wise choice of staying away from interacting with the
media. only exception? maybe at the birth of William and Kate's
future children.. Kate doesnt need to worry about what the media
will or will not do with her families comments. She has enough
    on her plate already.

  72. Can you tell me what you think William meant when he said 'it's the first time we've seen him really so we're having a proper chance to catch up' ?
(I haven't been able to watch the full video of their press call yet as I'm at work, so maybe the context there will answer my question)

It seems like a very odd thing for a parent to say when they've just spent the past 24 hours with their newborn, just the two of them and baby. I remember spending most of the first night gazing at my little girl, unable to sleep for the excitement of it all. Regretted that a little bit the next day though :)

Hopefully it all went smoothly for them anyway! They look enraptured with their little one and no doubt they'll be thrilled to finally be home and able to settle in as a family of three.

    1. 'it's the first time we've seen him really so we're having a proper chance to catch up'

He is talking about choosing a name. It takes some time - days, weeks, to really see the child's personality to choose a proper name. My mother waited 2 weeks, because she thought the names she chose prior to birth did not sync up with my personality and behavior. So she chose a different one, based on how she saw me.

This is why William says they've only just met him. They do not know this little person yet, and need to spend the time interacting before a suitable names offers itself.

      Delete
    2. I was wondering that also. In so many articles they said that the baby was born at 4:24 p.m. but that it wasn't announced until about four hours later so that William and Kate could have some one on one time with the baby. One article even said gee that is so like William to arrange it that way. In addition, they were in the hospital all those hours and they said William stayed in an adjoining room so he could be close to Kate and the baby. If I had read that comment it would be different. I heard him say it.
When I had my son the nurses encouraged time spent with my new baby.
I find this confusing like you do.

      Delete
    3. They probably meant theyre getting to know him after the 9 months of him being in kates belly

      Delete
    4. Thanks guys - yes I finally just watched the whole footage and saw the actual context of the statement William made. I figured it would be something like that, as you do need to get to know your baby a little bit when they're finally in your arms before landing them with a name.
The media reports took the quote out of the context of deciding on a name and so it seemed a really odd thing to say! Good old media... :)

  73. I have never seen such a look of pure love and joy as I saw in Catherine's eyes when she looked at her husband today. As usual, Jenny Packham suits her perfectly. They both were adorable and relaxed. William installed the car seat with total aplomb. I think they will be wonderful parents and raise a happy, well-adjusted young prince. Diana would have been so proud.

    1. Some additional thoughts...
1st is the baby circumcised? I know its a weird question but do most boy babies have it done in the UK? My son who is 7 is but when I was pregnant last year and didn't know what I was having, I was debating to circumcise my baby if a boy bc its not really medically necessary. Since I had a girl it didn't matter. But like I stated, do parents in the UK get they sons circumcised??

2ndly, I remember wearing heels and walking around 1 week after having my daughter and Lastlywas very comfey for my certain areas, so good job for Kate to manage them! When was the last time we seen her without her heels beside when she was doing Olympic duties??

3rdly, don't get mad at me for saying it but Kate looks more pregnant now then when she was 6 or so months pregnant. Just that she is showing off her belly more now then she did then!!

Lastly, I am so happy for the happy Royal couple! And I am hoping the rumors are true and Will and Kate are going to have another baby soon after HRH Prince of Cambridge!!

Beautiful pictures. Kate did marvelously, she had to be exhausted. Whewwww for WK&BC I am so glad that part is over. Baby C safetly delivered, presented to Grandparents and the world. Now finally home and hopefully baby and momma are getting some much needed rest. My favorite part is when William looks like he is going to say something to baby, maybe something like "it's ok were almost home˝and of course the love and affection Will and Kate clearly have for one another.
So very very happy for them all.

I think my husband is glad he has his wife back! and yes some food in the house again.

    Hello Everyone,

    What an amazing few days!

Thank you, dear Charlotte!! You've worked so hard and your posts have been top notch. I hope you have a well-deserved rest-but not for too long because I would miss you and your insights!

The Baby is beautiful. It's amazing how a baby who is a good birth weight often looks a little older.

It's likely he'll be tall because both his parents are. But I also noticed that he has large hands which often means he'll be tall, needing to "grow into" them. My son was a pound lighter than the Prince but had big hands and feet at birth. Since his fourth month, he's been at the top of the growth percentiles for his age.

I really can't hazard a guess anymore about Baby Cambridge's name! Hope we hear soon.

I think it likely that Kate's dress is a quiet tribute to Diana's "going home" outfit. It's a lovely idea that speaks loudly without talking.

The Duchess really seems incapable of producing a bad photograph. Just hours after labour/delivery and she looks great in every shot! I've heard photographers say that Marilyn Monroe was like that-incapable of looking bad on film. Add to that the Duchess's amazing poise and she's just remarkable.

They made a lovely couple and family today. I hope they take a moment to be very proud of themselves. I hope they can carry a little piece of this happiness with them forever.

I watched CNN for the hospital departure. Did anyone else notice that when Kate handed over the baby to William you could read her lips saying. "Have you got him?" and William replying. "Yeah, I've got him." I hope they both always have their darling son as they do today!

Hope everyone gets a rest and that Kate does go to Bucklebury once William has to return to work. It's not good for her to be without people who know her privately and can care for her emotionally so she doesn't get overwhelmed like Sarah Ferguson did without Prince Andrew.

Can hardly wait for some photos in a few months!

Blessings to this lovely and loving new family!

Absolutely amazing!!! The Cambridge family is gorgeous! I have to admit there were tears when they stepped through the doors. William and Kate were beaming....SO happy! Kate looked like she teared up a bit. So emotional and wonderful all the same. I loved William caressing Kate's back. Such a tender moment in the craziness. The little prince is beautiful, such a little doll! When I saw his tiny hands moving about the tears really came and a flood of memories from bringing home my babies. A small part of me thought I might want to try for #5 (my friends think I'm nuts). Everything about the moment was just precious and went magnificently well! So thankful all went well and everyone is happy and healthy. I pray they can enjoy these first days as a family and spend the time bonding....and sleeping if possible. :-) William and Kate, congratulations! Baby C is adorable! Best of luck and love to all!

I LOVED seeing the MIddletons! Their excitement and joy were so evident!!! The ear to ear smiles were great!!! Prince Charles seemed pretty excited too!!! Let me say I would have loved seeing the little girl ask Camilla about Spencer being part of the name. Charlotte, very awkward, but somewhat humorous also. Princess Anne....what in the world did her comment mean? Has nothing to do with her? Odd. It's her great-nephew and future king. I thought the comments from Sophie Wessex were so kind and caring. She seems like such a kindhearted, loving person. Congratulations to both the Windsor and Middleton families!!! I am so happy for everyone!!!

Such a fabulous day!!! I was desperately wanting to hop a flight back to London. Charlotte, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for the AMAZING job you always do, but especially the coverage the past couple days. You are INCREDIBLE!!! I pray you can rest up and give yourself a huge pat on the back for a job well done!!!

  82. Hi! Just wondering, does anyone else see a similarity in the baby's blanket? Like maybe it 's the same one Diana carried William out in? You think?

    ReplyDelete
  83. Here's what was so moving for me about watching the footage of them emerging from the hospital - they have lost that perfect Barbie and Ken plastic, slightly Stepford aura (not sure that's the word I want) that they had acquired or developed in the months after the wedding. I mean, they were starting to look and act like a couple of mannequins, always perfect, always smiling, etc. Today, both of them looked a little uncertain as they stepped out and Kate looked a little nervous and uncertain as every new, normal, imperfect mom would with an hours-old newborn as did William when Kate handed the baby over. They're only human and they will make mistakes, as all new parents do. I think people have started to hold them both up as some sort of perfect, ideal humans and that was starting to get a little tiresome, not to mention scary. But today, introducing their new little prince to the world, we saw a really human side of both Will and Kate and that was wonderful to see and I hope we continue to see that side of them as they start this new journey as parents.
And I'm quite sure that they'll go into seclusion in Bucklebury once they've spent a few days in London for protocol and appearances' sake. Nott Cott doesn't have air conditioning and none of the royals seem to like Buck House at all so Bucklebury seems the obvious choice for the new family, since their apartment at KP isn't done yet.
Also, the two times that Kate has looked her best, that she's looked young and pretty and not like some over made-up doll, since her marriage, are the day she checked out of the hospital in December and today. Hope she stays with the low-makeup look and unfussy, young style she had before the marriage and she displayed today.

There is a picture on the Daily Mail (internet, not paper) which shows William and Kate facing the massive amount of photographers on the other side of the street. I was taken aback with it. Can you imagine the nerves it needs to face up to that time and again, in the most important and emotional moments of your life ? Especially when any new parent has a protective feeling over a day old little baby ? The Duchess is incredible to have such composure, knowing that the cameras now pick up the slightess little flaw. And William too. I really admire them for it.

I have to say, they look lovely. Will and Kate was so happy :) Her dress was lovely. I loved the color and the look of the fabric. I have read several times that it must have been a tribute to Princess Diana. I wonder...

I'm also thinking that it will be more practical for Kate to have her hair pulled back/up bc it will be more convenient (it's quite long now, and with the baby) and I will truly enjoy that.

Did you guys read that #RoyalBaby set a twitter record? 2 million tweets. One that made me chuckle was saying something about how we truly will feel old when this baby is named sexiest man alive in 20 yrs. LOL! I now have to ask my mom if she was attentive when William was born.

Kate's remaining bump also surprised me. I'm grateful for the kind explanations in the first comments. I have never really been close to new mom (post-partum) other than my mothe giving birth to my sister, but I don't really recall.

    Lovely family pictures :)

  101. SO happy for them both! The baby is absolutely beautiful! Question: Is that the same blanket that William was wrapped in when he was presented to the world? They look very similar.

What an amazing experience! I can't stop looking at the pictures! I have to admit that I am really surprised by how emotional I was! They are such a beautiful family and I can't wait to see how they raise their son and how he will do his part to change the world (all babies have that potential, you know!).
For US readers, the swaddle blankets are also available at Target (in-store and online) for about $30--I received them as a gift for the birth of my son and, 2 years later, they go with him to daycare for use as a light blanket during nap time. I LOVE THEM and give them as gifts at every shower I attend.
Thank you so much, Charlotte for the wonderful posts. You kept us abreast of everything in a beautiful, respectful way. And thank you so much to everyone for the awesome comments! It is always fun to read other people's perspectives!
Now, for the baby name! (I still think Phillip Spencer)

  103. I cannot help but comment on how brilliant Prince William is in arranging things in a very traditional way but at the same time very different, modern, considerate to others and well planned! As they had a very traditional wedding though with personal and surprise touches, this whole introduction of the baby to the family, press, medical staff etc was brilliant up to the announcement of the baby's names. Now they can relax at Kate's family home. Diana once said Britain is fortunate to have William and I agree. He is immensely sensible. I cannot help also to wonder whether Kate's polka dot dress was a tribute to Diana who left hospital with Prince William in a polka dot dress...

  104. I also salute Kate for coming out of the hospital looking completely natural, not overly groomed but beautiful and fresh and not ashamed of her pre-birth bump at all. Well done Kate!!!
