Kate Gives Birth To A Boy; William: 'We Couldn't Be Happier'

What a glorious day it has been for royal watchers, members of the Royal Family, the Middletons, and most of all William and Kate.

@ClarenceHouse Twitter Feed

At 4.24 p.m. on July 22nd 2013, Kate gave birth to a healthy baby boy weighting 8 lbs 6 oz. Both mother and baby are doing very well. Prince William was by Kate's side throughout the delivery and will spend the night with his wife and son at St. Mary's.

The full statement from Kensington Palace.

Kensington Place Statement

The birth was announced four hours after the birth, allowing the couple to spend the previous hours with their baby in complete privacy. The couple spent the time alone with their baby without any visitors.

In an unexpected move, the announcement came via an email to the press before the notice was placed on the royal easel outside Buckingham Palace.

William and Kate's press secretary leaving the Lindo Wing with the notice for the easel, which was taken by car to Buckingham Palace.

The announcement was placed on the easel by the Queen's press secretary Alisa Anderson.

Royal gynaecologists Marcus Setchell and Alan Farthing left the hospital smiling.

Mr Setchell had this to say about the little Prince:

'Wonderful baby, beautiful baby.'

The Queen and Prince Philip expressed their delight in a Palace statement and grandfather Prince Charles had this to say:

'My wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their first boy.
Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone's life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.'

There is a carnival atmosphere in Britain and there's only one story everyone is talking about as evidenced by tomorrow's papers.

London landmarks were lit up in blue, with the BT Tower reading "It's a boy".

We had hoped to see Prince William read a statement on the steps of the Lindo Wing, instead he released a brief but perfect statement via the Palace:

'We couldn't be happier.'

I think Williams words spoke volumes, and we couldn't be happier for the couple. I know that sentiment is echoed by those of you who commented and read our Live Blog throughout the day. It was wonderful to share in the excitement with all of you and to read your comments. I expect it is quite possible William, Kate and their baby boy will leave St Mary's at some point early tomorrow. It will be wonderful to see the Cambridge family together and of course to find out the Prince's name, which the Palace said would happen in "due course".

Congratulations, William and Kate! :)

The third one must be boy
    3. DC looked quite good in her pregnancy what is quite sure indicating
    "boy"
The last, the announcement has words "SON" already typed while

Anon 00:20 - I'm pretty sure the had a daughter version of the memo on standby. I think that we should trust that the Duke and Duchess did not know until they shared that special surprise moment when their son arrived.

  7. What a day!! I'm sure we'll never forget the excitement we felt today, just like we did when we watched the Royal Wedding! A historical day for sure!
I'm absolutely delighted to hear mum a baby are both doing great! I wish I could buy one of the special edition magazines! I have a copy of the Evening Standard of 29th April 2011 because my friend's mum was in London that day and bought it for me! I guess I won't have that luck this time :(
Charlotte, words are not enough to express how thankful I am. Hope you can rest tonight. Thank you for a superb coverage!
See you tomorrow, when we'll see for the first time our little Prince!

I think that is one of the reasons this event has captured so much interest around the world. I can't wait to see the newest Prince of Cambridge.
Thank you for your respectful coverage. I hope you sleep well after all of the anticipation.

The safe birth of their son is such great news!! We're really thankful and excited that the new baby boy has arrived safe and sound and that father, mother and son are all healthy. May they all receive the blessings of the our Lord.

May their days be smothered with joy, happiness and the warmth of their son and always be overwhelmed by the love of their little one's tugs.

I will remember this day forever and all the people I have talked to who share this special interest. Tomorrow will hopefully be just as amazing with the first glimpse of the baby. I wish the Duchess a speedy recovery! I did tear up at Prince William's statement! He is such a great man who loves his Duchess so much and will I'm sure love his son just as much. Thank you Charlotte for this amazing coverage.

Don't see my comment from earlier on the previous post, but I think you (Charlotte) are inundated with info right now!!! Hopefully YOU can rest now and get some much needed sleep! THANK YOU FOR THE BEST COVERAGE OF AN AMAZING DAY!!!!

Congratulations to William and Kate on the birth of HRH Prince Cambridge! I am over the moon excited for you both! Many prayers and love sent your way for a wonderful night of rest and peace as your sweet family of 3. Enjoy your beautiful bundle of joy and this special time. Prince William, enjoying the nappy changing duties overnight. Thankful you are there to help and support your beautiful wife. Looking forward to seeing your precious family tomorrow on the steps of St. Mary's!

A huge congratulations also to Prince Charles and the Queen and Prince Phillip! Such a wonderful moment of becoming a grandparent for the first time! I was thinking earlier William was the 3rd grandchild for the Queen and Prince Phillip and this is their 3rd great-grandchild. Also the first great-grandson for them!!!! Such a happy and positive time for the House of Windsor!

There's been many images and coverage of Princess Diana today. Must admit the tinge of sadness during this time thinking how excited she would have been. She would be such a wonderful grandmother. I know I miss her spirit and smile. Thinking she's smiling down and so happy for William and Kate. :-)

God bless the Cambridge family and prayers of thankfulness for a happy, healthy delivery of Baby Cambridge! So excited about the Little Prince!!!

  24. Thanks, Charlotte, and congratulations to the Royal Family and all of Britain on the birth of your new prince! I have been feeling a bit sad thinking how much Diana would have enjoyed this moment. And then the Prince of Wales demonstrates once again how much he just doesn't get it, calling the baby "our first grandchild", apparently referencing himself and the Duchess of Cornwall. It was like a slap in the face, but then, I'm just an American. Perhaps I don't get it.

    1. The official statement on the PofW Web site reads: "Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild." Please note the word "my" not "our." No slap in the face. Perhaps this blog can correct its text to reflect the official statement. :-)

And so we wait for the name. Wonder if they will reach far back in English history. Best wishes to all on a safe delivery.

    2. Thanks for the correction, and thanks to Charlotte for correcting the quote in the text. My apologies to the Prince of Wales for jumping to the wrong conclusion. It is a time for the joy that only new life can bring, and we Americans happily celebrate along with The Duke and Duchess, and wish them every happiness.

  25. And now we wait for the name...my guess is that they will name him Phillip Charles William Spencer...

Wow what an exciting day for the beautiful couple. I am so happy that the Duchess had a unevenful labor & delivery and that Baby Boy Cambrdieg is heathly. And mom, dad & baby are all resting together.

I take my hat off to William for not annoucing the birth of his & his Duchess's baby for 4 hrs. It was pure William. Nice they got to spend those very special hours together as a family and let the bonding begin.

I can't wait until we see this beautiufl family together when they leave the hospital tomorrow. And who care's what the Duchess is wearing or how her hair & make look. This poor girl just went through 10 or so hours of labor. But knowing Kate she will look beautiful as always.

So as we all wait for the photo shot tomorrow of Baby Boy Cambridge & his loving parents, let's all toast with whatever you drink to this new roayl family and wish them all the best with their new bundle.

God Bless them and Congrats on your beautiful Baby Boy.

And Ms. Charlotte- Thank you for all your hard work keeping all of us fans up to date on this royal baby birth. IF it was not for this grat blog we could kept up with all of the excitment.

Is saying she "was safely delivered of a son" a regular way of saying she delivered a son in England? It makes her job seem so passive, like the doctors did all the work, which was presumably not the case! lol.

What an exciting, nerve wracking, joyful day for so many around the world!

Just imagine the happiness for William and Kate after ten plus years together. Finally they have a healthy baby and will soon move into their new home(s).

I hope they can rest tonight before the baby really "wakes" up and starts keeping newborn hours. I also hope they can do what is best for their family despite the press, the security, the palace- go to Bucklebury or stay at KP or both.

Charlotte, thank you so much for your wonderful coverage today and in the many days leading up to this happy event. You always make me feel like I'm in the know.

Thanks to all for your enthusiasm and wonderful comments. So great to share it all with all of you.

What do you think-George or Edward or James, maybe even Richard for a first name? For middle names names, Michael, Phillip, Charles, David, Henry, Albert or John? Can hardly wait to hear the announcement.

I hung the Union Jack outside my house tonight for our Prince.

    Sleep well, all.

My guess would be George, although James may be possible as well.
Arthur could also be a possibility.
The last King Edward (the Queen's uncle) abdicated, so I don't think they would give that name to an heir to the throne. The last King Richard - also not such a nice story, as far as I know.
I really think they'll call him George after the Queen's father.
As for the middle names, Philip and Charles are likely to be included but I do hope that they'll also include Michael, so that her side of the family is represented as well!

  38. I live in the states but I have become very interested in the royal family due to my mom's best friend who was born and raised in London. She was there for William's birth and now thanks to the internet she got to be there for the birth of his son. The joy and tears and excitement I saw in her today after the announcement brought tears to me! If there was this much excitement around here from just one person I cant imagine what England will be like right now! I'm sure most of us here don't really get it...I certainly didn't before...but now I see how much love and respect the people of England have for this family and I love that. Every baby is special...but I hope this beautiful boy has a very healthy happy life.

Yesterday is one of those days in history I will never forget. It is going to be a blessing watching this little baby grow up. I am so happy William and Kate took the time just to bond with the baby in private and I am glad he chose to spend the night at the hospital.

I was following your blog Charlotte along with SkyNews and you did a fantastic job. Right before they announced the birth it was looking like we only had a little more than an hour then the Queen would of retired for the evening I was getting nervous. Then people started running towards the palace gates and the announcement came. I was jumping for joy! I guess 9 mo wait will do that. The rest of my family thought I was nuts but 8#6oz that's a big boy who would of thought with Kate being so thin.
May the Lord be with William and Kate and their new beautiful baby prince. Can't wait to see the first family photo and here the gun salute and church bells ringing.

  41. I don't understand why Alan Farthing hasn't signed the document nor is he mentioned in the KP statement - I feel a bit sorry for him. It's like Marcus Setchell took all the limelight...

    Charlotte,
Many, many thanks for your great blogs.
Began to get concerned for Catherine when it got to 8pm yesterday and then the great news.
I have hoped it would be a son ever since the announcement that she was pregnant, because I think he will get better treatment from the paps--they would have tried to make a daughter a clone of Diana.
I do hope the Duke and Duchess got a good sleep---it really was quite noisy outside.

What an amazing and exciting day this was yesterday! Congratulations to William and Kate, I'm so happy that everything went well, that their baby boy is healthy and that they could spend a few hours together in privacy before announcing the birth.
Now I can't wait to see the first photo of the little prince and his parents :)! And of course I'm curious to know the names. Of course the most important thing is that mother and child are well, but it has also been a historic day for the UK and the Commonwealth, and that also reflects in other parts of the world, the birth is all over the news since yesterday evening also over here where people generally aren't very much into royalty or monarchy.

Charlotte, thank you so much once again for your excellent and speedy coverage of yesterday's events and of the past months, it has been a pleasure following your blog as I could be sure to get all the important and relevant news here. (I'm a regular reader but don't comment very often due to lack of time.) I hope you will get some well-deserved rest in the coming days and weeks, I think you must have been up and awake almost 24/7 since the beginning of July! Thank you and I'm looking forward to continue following the news here on the blog, to see the Cambridges starting their live as a family and to see their son growing up :)!

  48. I am so happy. I hoped for a little girl but I am not disappointed at all. Long live the little Prince of Cambridge! Congratulations to TRH the duke and duchess of Cambridge. I can imagine their joy. The Queen, the prince of Wales, the duchess of Cornwall and prince Harry must be very pleased.

A special thought to Princess Diana who would have been a grand mother today. She would be overjoyed to see her William Wombat become such a wonderful husband and father and would have loved Catherine and the baby so much.

As to the little prince's first name, Arthur and Philip are my favorites. Edward, Richard are nice too. Well, wait and see!

Charlotte, your blog is the best of all. YOU DID A FANTASTIC WORK in keeping us informed. I really hope you can rest a little soon. You must be really exhausted.

  52. I remember so clearly Charles carrying William out of the hospital (rather gingergly) and then passing him over to Diana. Suspect William might do the same but he would look more confident.

My father was six-three and I weighed over eight pounds - most unusual for the time - so the fact the parents are taller than most of the other members of the royal family may account for the weight. William is very tall and while Kate isn't as tall as Diana, she is still tall. Wonder if she will wear her famous court pumps when she comes out.

Loved Princess Anne's remarks, so typical. She gets that bluntness from her father, although the queen can be tart too. Sounded a bit at the BBC when someone asked her about Phillip and his surgery. Sad to say, that's why Anne isn't as loved as others despite her hard work.

Fear no chance for Spencer but delightful it was raised to Camilla. We may have to wait for a daughter, even one of Harry's, to see Diana honoured.
