Kate in Pale Pink Packham For The Queen's Coronation Service

The Royal Family gathered together at Westminster Abbey this morning to attend the Queen's Coronation Service.

William, Kate and Harry joined the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh (who cancelled an engagement last night due to illness), Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke of York and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, the Earl and Countess of Wessex and their daughter Lady Louise, the Princess Royal and her family, the Gloucesters and Kents to mark the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty's Coronation which took place on 2 June 1953.

Today's service marks the first time William and Kate have returned to the Abbey since their wedding, it's interesting to think they're only weeks away from the arrival of their first child.

The service commenced at 11 a.m. and was conducted by the Dean of Westminster, The Very Reverend Dr John Hall. It is estimated 2,000 guests were in attendance. Amongst these were church representatives, Realms High Commissioners and representatives of British Overseas Territories and their Diplomatic Corps.

An address was given by the Archbishop of Canterbury and readings were given by the Prime Minister David Cameron and the Secretary General of the Commonwealth, His Excellency Mr. Kamalesh Sharm. Actress Claire Skinner read a poem by Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy which was specifically written for the service.

Westminster Abbey's incredible history is intertwined with the Royal Family's and has been the coronation church since 1066.  It has witnessed 38 coronations (fascinating to think of the various periods of history), the first being the coronation of William the Conqueror and most recently Queen Elizabeth II's in 1953.

Westminster Abbey has a wonderful page dedicated to the Queen's Coronation allowing one to relive every moment of the service which took place six decades ago:

'After sixteen months of preparations Tuesday 2 June finally arrived. The Abbey opened at 5.00 am and by 5.30 reporters and cameramen began to take their positions in the Abbey. By 7.00 am the guests began taking their seats. At 10.15 am the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh left Buckingham Palace in the Gold State Coach, bound for Westminster.'

The Queen's coronation dress was made by Norman Hartnell, who had made her wedding dress. It was of white satin embroidered with emblems of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. rose (for England), thistle (Scotland), leek (Wales), shamrock (Ireland), lotus (Ceylon), protea (South Africa) wattle (Australia), wheat and jute (Pakistan), maple leaf (Canada) and fern (New Zealand). Whilst reading about the dress, I was reminded of Kate's wedding dress which encompassed emblems of the United Kingdom.

An invitation to the coronation. Really beautiful artwork and so well preserved.

No doubt the service provided the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh an opportunity to relive memories of the historic event.

The royals mingled outside the church after the service.

Kate and Zara enjoyed a chat.

I must commend the BBC for their stellar coverage, for those of you who could not see the service televised the order of service is detailed at the Telegraph. After the service, senior royals attended a luncheon in College Hall, the Mediaeval Abbots' Dining Hall.

The Duchess looked regal in a bespoke pale pink coat and dress by Jenny Packham. It is described on the designers Facebook Page as:

'A delicate daisy lace dress with silver grey ribbon detail work with a shantung jacket'.

I had hoped Kate would choose the British designer for maternity wear options. The fringe detail on the dress is a lovely choice. The look was perfect for the occasion yet a comfortable choice. Kate looked radiant, her best maternity look so far.

Kate brought back the Jane Taylor nude based hat with silk tulle and organza discs she wore for the Jubilee service last year. It originally retailed for $1300.

A closer look at Kate's elegant hairstyle.

Kate wore her trusty L.K. Bennett Sledge pumps.

Kate carried her Alexander McQueen clutch and accessorised with dazzling earrings and a bracelet. The always knowledgeable Anna believes the pieces may have been a wedding gift from Prince Charles.

    5. Thank you Sarah. The blog is dedicated solely to covering William and Kate and my priority was to post photos of them first. It would be impossible (time wise) to go into detail on each royal and would be very much going off topic. There's some great blogs on the British royal family which cover the other royals and as you said the news sites do a terrific job in terms of coverage.

Dear Charlotte---truly grateful for your wonderful blog. I watched the Service yesterday--lovely, but rushed here to discover who was the designer of Catherine's clothes and to ask about the jewellery, which I didn't remember seeing before. The internet is full of photos of them all, but you give us so much more and unlike a certain newspaper would never tell us that Lady Louise was Prince Andrew's daughter.
We like talking to you and all our fellow bloggers about our favourite royal.
      Thank you.

Not only are you the most timely and complete with your coverage of Kate's activities and clothing choices, you also have a wonderful, positive writing style! Thank you so much for all the hard work you do to bring us this blog! It can't always be easy to do all the research and investigating you do to bring us all the background information that you provide, but we're surely glad that you do!!

Beautiful and very elegant. Very classic outfit.
Thought all the Royal ladies (including the 2 York Princesses) looked very well this morning, though not too keen on the brocade for the Queen's coat.
Understand Prince Harry is to unveil a plaque at the Abbey commemorating William and Catherine's wedding.
Has she worn those earrings before? They really caught the light in the Abbey and "Hurrah" a beautiful summer's day.

  13. This is wonderful coverage, Charlotte - thank you so much. The live stream of today's service was geoblocked in my neck of the woods (Nova Scotia), so to see these photos and your comments so early in the day is a special treat! I think that the Duchess looked beautiful in the pastel JPackham outfit, and immediately fell in love with her hairdo. From the time she and William came to Canada, I've become increasingly proud that such an intelligent, caring, and capable person will be our future queen. In the meantime, it's wonderful to be able to celebrate our present remarkable Queen's 60 years on the throne. And of course, her equally remarkable husband deserves a huge amount of credit too! Will check back here throughout the day for updates - it's my favourite Royal webspot! Lee

  15. So nice to see this event. I visited Westminster Abbey two yeras ago, and what a beautiful monument it is, full of art and history.

I like Kate's outfit, it's very appropriate. But frankly I expected other colours this year. It is almost the same outfit she wore for the Jubilee service last year. Too predictable: same shoes, same hat, same colours. It's a bit boring. Her hair is wonderful, though! And she looks really pretty :)

Sophie Wessex is absolutely fabulous, once more. She is becoming quite stylish. The York sisters, on the other hand, are not very well, I must say... As usual, they look older than they really are.

    2. After comparing the picture of her at last years event to the one this year, she looks SO much prettier and healthier this year. The added pregnancy weight on her face and neck gives her a much softer, radiant look. I just hope she doesn't try to get "stick thin" again after she has the baby.

  16. She looks very lovely, if not a little reserved. I just SO love seeing her in bright colors! Bea and Eugenie look fabulous too - and I had to smile at Zara's kicky outfit!

Sorry that this is off topic - but why is the Earl and Countess of Wessex's son James always excluded from public events? Is he still considered too young to appear/behave in public? :)

    2. I think he's still considered a little too young. Lady Louise has only really been 'on the scene' since the royal wedding.

I wish that they'd sort Lady Louise's wardrobe out now as she's 10 yrs+ and could be a bit more 'with it' - maybe Kate could help!

    3. Louise will be 10 in November. We never really saw Louise at these sorts of royal functions until a few years ago.

James is 5 1/2 years old. So I would conclude that Sophie and Edward prefer that James be a little bit older before subjecting him to public scrutiny.

Jean - It is thought the jewellery was a wedding gift from Prince Charles, the pieces looked really lovely with the Packham outfit. The entire royal family looked so happy. It was wonderful Prince Philip was able to make it as he had to cancel an engagement last night due to illness.

    2. Both the diamond bracelet and earrings have been worn on multiple occasions. We saw the bracelet @ the Olympic Athletes reception at Buckingham Palace last I think. The earrings were first noted at the Canada Day concert in July of 2011 when she wore her hair up/back & had the vibrant purple dress on.

  19. I am THRILLED to see these pics...we couldn't get any live video in the U.S. (booo). Hoping they have the service on Youtube later. The Duchess looked beautiful as always...love that color on her and her hair looked great. The York sisters looked FAB. LOVED Beatrice's outfit and hat (although I just feel that it's almost summer..and black..idk...but I loved it anyway). LOVED Sophie's outfit, I think that was my favorite (minus the strappy sandals with stockings). And of course Lady Louise looked adorable. Camilla looked beautiful as did the lady of honor---Her Majesty, the Queen. Loved Zara's dress...but I think she could have found a better hat. And Autumn looked lovely too!

And Catherine, I always wondered why the Wessex's son james is never in public...I guess he still is too young?

    ReplyDelete
  20. Would have added an inch to the whole outfit but that's a quibble, Kate's best look so far while pregnant, the sort of elegant outfit I had hoped to see her in. Those short skirts that stopped several outfits from looking as polished as they ought, are finally gone. Think the use of the same colours as the ceremony last year link the two services together and don't cause undue attention to Kate on what should be the queen's day.

All royal ladies looked fantastic but Countess of Wessex could have used an extra inch on her dress as well; the wind almost got her. Think James is too much a tearaway for a service; he will no doubt appear when he is older.

Loved the queen's brocade and loved her hat; not always the case. But rare for her, the brocade did wrinkle. Delighted to see the Duke well enough to attend. Imagine Camilla will go pale as well, which she overdoes a bit. Sometimes looks wonderful but sometimes too much!

Just was in London from California and shops Jigaw and Bennett are filled with Kate-Inspired laces and eyelets. Did a bit of damage at Jigsaw, some beautiful lace at reasonable prices, including a cocktail dress in same pale hues as Kate's outfit today. (I bought it in black!) Kate from Texas take note; believe you are coming here.

Been suprised to come across more anti-royal sentiment than ever before in the thirty years I've been coming here. Had come across partisan favorites before but less "all men are equal" sentiment. Sense royals have some work in years to come, especially after the queen is gone, but moods do shift and could just be coincidence with whom I chatted with.

Still for now, a lovely day for all. Loved Kate's hair style although it came out quite wind-blown. Wind has been quite sharp!

With the exception of Beatrice and Eugenie the ladies attending, especially Kate, looked lovely. I saw some pictures at news sites before coming here so had an idea of what to expect.

To me Beatrice and Eugenie looked like they were dressed for the middle of winter color wise and I found both of their outfits unflattering. I'll keep myself from mentioning their head-wear.

HOWEVER, The Countless of Wessex, Kate and Zara all looked happy and fantastic. The Queen too, and although she may not be the most stylish of Royals, what she wears is always "just right" for the occasion and her choice of color is always perfect.

Good job Charlotte and I will check in later for more pictures and details.

  23. The duchess looked beautiful today! Finally, an actual maternity piece! Very much like last year, but it suits her, and the occasion. The accessories were all lovely as well. I think she should/could have left the coat at home; she would have looked better in the dress only. She seems to be wanting to cover up with coats lately and I don't think it's doing her any favors. She would look much thinner (don't get me wrong, she still looks thin!) if she would show off her figure a little more with fitted maternity dresses. Plus, I would have loved to get a better look at that dress! Everyone looked lovely and happy - I especially loved the Queen's hat and Sophie's dress - looks like a wonderful day!

    1. Kate looks lovely no doubt, but she has the means so she could have changed it up a bit. The dress is an exact replica of her 2012 coronation service lace dress, except this is a maternity line. A little disappointing.

What a beautiful post! I'm so happy that it was such a beautiful, sunny day for the celebration and I think that everyone looked great! Kate's outfit was very appropriate and classically pretty. And girlfriend is working those heels 8 months in! :)
I love how happy the entire family looked; I think that sometimes people forget that they are a real family and the photos in the post today show that bond. Take away the paparazzi and the crowds and they would look like a regular family leaving church.
Again, the fashion was fabulous today (although I am not loving the Countess of Wessex's stockings and strappy shoes, and Beatrice and Eugenie--well bless their hearts). Your post--as always--is wonderful.

    1. Depends on the sandals. I think dress sandals can be worn with sandalfoot hose with no problem. Casual sandals obviously should not be worn with hose.

If you want to wear dress sandals with a dressy outfit but don't think the outfit looks appropriate with bare legs (and let's face it, most women's legs don't look all that wonderful bare), what are you supposed to do? Fake tans are so obviously -- fake. Women who run around in fake tans often just do not realize that; they think they look very natural. And if you wear fake tan on your legs, you need to wear it everywhere else, something many women simply do not want to do, for good reason.

So, is the solution to toss dress sandals and never wear them? I think a lot of women would not agree.

  35. I think Kate looked fantastic! Classy, elegant, understated and, as someone else said, just enough bling. (I suspect she repeated the hat on purpose as this was very much HM's day.)

I must agree with another poster that Bea and Eugenie's outfits looked out of season and, quite frankly, Bea's "dress" looked like a bathrobe with studs.

Autumn, Princess Michael and Sophie looked lovely. While Sophie's look has gotten "younger" since Kate joined the family (IMO), hopefully, we will see Lady Louise in a more grownup style shoe one of these days. Even the color was out of place I thought.

And Zara, well, she definitely stole the show color-wise. :)

  37. Thank you, Charlotte! Enjoying the great pictures. What fun!

Kate looked absolutely stunning today. I can't think of one thing to criticize. I even thought the length was nearly perfect. Most of the ladies chose very subtle colors or pastels for their outfits not wanting to draw more attention to themselves than the queen. Zara's dress was one of my least favorites. Much too short with a garishly loud print. It's so interesting to see what the ladies choose to wear knowing that they will be scrutinized.

I pity Beatrice and Eugenie. They seem to have no sense of fashion at all, choosing drab, dark colors that would more appropriate for winter than spring. It's too bad they don't have someone advising them.

  38. What is the protocol on open toed shoes? I'm surprised to see the Countess of Wessex in stockings with open toed shoes. Otherwise they all looked beautiful, especially The Duchess.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think I've read somewhere that the protcol is closed shoes (not open toed) for Royal Engagements - I think it was when Kate was at BP a while ago and wore some satin court shoes.

I didn't think it worked on Sophie yesterday at all!

      Delete
    2. There is no shoe protocol. This is a misconception, unfortunately oft-repeated. If you look at pictures over the years, you'll see royal women in open-toe shoes quite a lot. Even the Queen wore such shoes to her wedding. The Countess of Wessex has been a member of the royal family long enough that if there were some "royal shoe protocol," she would not be violating it.

      Delete
    3. Jean from Lancs.6 June 2013 at 18:55

The Queen Mother and Princess Margaret also wore open toed shoes, so they are obviously acceptable, but I suspect bare legs at the Abbey would not be---ergo Sophie wore stockings (or tights).
I rather think there are fewer taboos than one might imagine. At one time gloves and a hat would be worn at all times---when I was at school, Reverend Mother used to hold the then Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret as example of always wearing hat and gloves. Now hats emerge when they are with the Queen or events like yesterday and for the younger generation gloves only seen in the winter.

I have decided I am brave enough to try to sew a suit. While I was looking at patterns online, I happened upon this pattern from Vogue, Vintage patterns. This dress and coat are similar to Kate's; I'm sure the length can be modified. If any of you want to attempt the project, here is the link. Vogue notes that the level of difficulty is "average."

    Hi, Charlotte,

The 20/20 special, Bringing Up Baby: Royal Edition with Barbara Walters is available at these links outside the United States. Heidi Agan is the Kate Middleton look-alike in the special, and she was kind enough to post these links on her facebook website.

  43. Does anyone have the same opinion. Williams trousers..Hmmm They always seem to be on the verge of half mast. I can't for the life of me understand why. He's a tall man granted over 6.2in but surely he could afford trousers that have a better length-so distracting.

Hello Ms. Charlotte- I just read where the last engagement for our Duchess will be on June 15th Trooping the Colours. Wondering why the Order of the Garter will not be her last, it is only on the 17th.

I also read where she has not been feeling well. Have you heard anything regarding this. I hope she is doing ok and she is with William.

Thanks again for this great blog and all your hard work you put into it for us fans.

    1. Hello Pauline,

It's not known yet for sure but it looks like Trooping will be the last engagement.

On another note, terribly sorry to hear Prince Philip has been admitted to hospital.

    2. It is so very sad to hear Prince Philip has been admitted to the hospital again... Praying for him!

Charlotte, I'd like to ask you a question, if I may, please! Do you have any predictions about how long Catherine's maternity leave will last?

      Thank you!

    3. The impression I get from the royal reporters is that it will be quite a while. At least a few months I imagine.

This news of Prince Philip is rather worrying. I did think on Tuesday that HM kept looking sideways at him. It now looks as though the "unwell" on Monday was due to the investigations.

Charlotte, thank you SO much for the amazing post! We have had power outages and internet trouble, so I am FINALLY posting! I haven't had a chance to read all the posts, but hope to do so over the weekend!

Where to begin??? Kate looks absolutely gorgeous! I love that Kate went with a similar look from last years Jubilee service. Seeing her in person last year, she looked amazing and she looks just as amazing this year! Her hair was beautiful and the coat and dress so feminine and pretty. She looks so happy and healthy! William and Harry looked pretty good themselves!!! :)

Loved Sophie's dress and hat! Loved Zara's dress! Autumn looks beautiful also! Everyone looked so fresh and spring-like, except.....Beatrice and Eugenie. Why such the dark colors? Thought they looked somewhat out of place. :(

Congratulations to a glorious 60 years for Her Majesty. She looks beautiful and I know must have been so happy having her family there to support her. I wonder what she was thinking as she sat through the service thinking back at the coronation 60 years ago. Such wonderful history! I know she was especially grateful to have Prince Phillip by her side. Sending my thoughts and prayers for a speedy and full recovery.

My only disappointment is that there's no video of the service to watch. Hoping that something will eventually come up on YouTube. Charlotte, I noticed you do not have a confirmed appearance at Order of the Garter. :( Do you have a confirmed appearance for Trooping the Colour? Getting ready to leave next week and am planning on being there. Really wanting to catch a glimpse of Kate!

I'm sure I'll have a couple questions before I leave. Thank you again for a wonderful post! You are AMAZING!!! Have a wonderful Saturday!
