Garter Day, Kate Spends Father's Day With Mike Middleton, Polo + Great Giveaway

The annual Order of the Garter ceremony took place at Windsor Castle today. As expected the Duchess was not in attendance.

Clarence House Twitter Feed/Press Association

The Most Noble Order of the Garter, founded in 1348 by Edward III, is the highest order of chivalry existing in England. St George is the patron saint of the ceremony. The Queen appoints the Knights of the Garter without advice from ministers and this year there will be no new Knights installed into the order. Interestingly, Prince William was the 1000th Knight on the register when he joined the Order in 2008.

The Queen was all smiles today and no doubt delighted that Prince Philip was released from the London Clinic following exploratory surgery. He is currently convalescing and is expected to resume royal duties in the autumn.

If you're missing the Duchess, who is currently on maternity leave, there is a good chance she will attend Melissa Percy and Thomas Van Straubenzee's wedding on Saturday. :)

***********

Yesterday was Father's Day (we hope all the fathers among you had a splendid day) and Kate spent the day with her father at the Middleton family home in Bucklebury, Berkshire. The Duchess was spotted at a gas station with Mike Middleton by a very excited tweeter.

Meanwhile, William and Harry participated in a charity polo match at the Beaufort Polo Club in Tetbury, Gloucestershire. The Princes played on opposing teams and showed their competitive spirit as Harry appeared to shoulder barge William as they fought for the ball.

One onlooker was incredibly pleased to see the royals and snap a photo of them :)

The Princes appeared to thoroughly enjoy themselves and mingled with spectators afterwards. We had wondered if Kate might make a polo appearance this season; at this point in her pregnancy it would seem highly unlikely.

The Mirror has compiled a list of 25 interesting facts we already know about Baby Cambridge. Some of my favourites are:

  • Will be Prince or Princess from birth with title His or Her Royal Highness.
  • If William lives until 80 the child wont' be King or Queen until 2062.
  • If child lives to 87 it will be the first monarch of the 22nd century.
  • Kate has said she wants a boy, William wants a girl. Prince Harry reportedly said they don't know the sex.
  • Alexandra, Victoria, Elizabeth and Diana are bookies' favourite names for a girl. George, Charles, Philip and James for a boy.
  • William intends to be at birth.
  • A 41-gun salute will be fired in London parks to celebrate the birth.
  • Following tradition, birth will be announced with a note pinned at the gates of Buckingham Palace.

With Catherine not attending the Garter Ceremony, there seems to be very little reporting from it, so many thanks for the pic.
Quite a journey for the wedding on Saturday.
10:35 tonight on BBC1 is the 2nd film about William and the Air, Sea Rescue.

I can't wait to see Duchess Kate again but I am not feeling sad. In less than a month, she will have given birth to her first baby and what a joy it will be.
And I've got the feeling that the Royal baby will be born before July 13th. Wait and see! LOL!
I too am happy that Prince Philp is on the mend. Her Majesty the Queen looked radiant today.

Thank you so much for the post dear Charlotte! I appreciate each and everyone of them!

    2. I'm so happy for her! Wow. It must have been an amazing feeling to see the Duchess. I can't wait to "hear" the details. :)

And I am so NOT surprised that there was less coverage of the Garter Ceremony since Kate didn't attend. I realized it as soon as I saw that it wasn't headline news on DM's site. LOL. Someone here said she's the breath of fresh air in the royal family and I couldn't agree more. (Just as Diana was in her day).

It is so nice to see that the Duchess is so close to her family, and especially her parents. I admire her very much for that. Here in Portugal Father's Day is celebrated on March 19th, so I didn't know that in the UK it was different. I'm glad Kate spent the day with Michael Middleton, he seems so kind and amiable. :)

The pictures of the two young ladies is hilarious. I can imagine their thoughts "oh my gosh I toke pictures of Will and Harry " "oh my goodness I chatted with Prince William " Cute., very cute.
Would love a few of the sparkles but, I am very content to see some younger folk enjoying them.

      Hello Sarah from Calif.
I too hope William takes her back to Angelesey with him so she can rest & they can be together in these last few exciting weeks. Since she is feeling well there should be not reason why she can not be in Anglesey. They have choppers on hand just in case she does go into early labor.

I too love the picture of the young lady getting the phot of the tw princes. And the one where William is talking to her it is like he is telling her "yes this is the size of my baby now". I just miss seeing our girl by his side. It is like he is single again, poor William and his Duchess. I don't know why she can't go to the polo matches and just sit in a chair. Oh well a long dry spell coming...lol

  5. Charlotte, well done you, on the Baby Cambridge charity. I'd have to live to be 112 to see this child on the throne, that was a bit of a shock. I believe Catherine technically will have to curtsey to her own child until she becomes Princess Consort, is that correct? Very exciting to thinkof the new generation

    2. Is there such a thing as Princess Consort? Though Kate's next title would be Queen Consort when Wills becomes King which I probably won't be alive to see - I am only 2 yrs younger than Prince Charles.

      Delete
    3. Unless they officially change the title, Catherine will be the queen consort when William becomes king.

It has been said that Camilla will use the title "Princess Consort" when Charles becomes king, but she will be the legal queen consort. I think the claim that she would use a lesser title was, like the fact she uses the title Duchess of Cornwall instead of her rightful title of Princess of Wales, a sop to the Diana fans, who think she has no right to use a title they believe their idol should have had one day.

      Delete
    4. Maybe it does only apply to Camilla, I know I've read it is the title she will use when Charles becomes King. And I agree with you on why it was done that way. I do not expect to live to see William crowned, I'm of Charles's generation and the Mountbatten-Windsors are a healthy, long-lived family.

Wow it sure is going to be a long dry spell not seeing the beautiful Duchess. I just hope William take's her back to Anglesey with him so she can get the rest she need's. They have spent enough time apart during her pregnancy with him working in Agnlesey & her in London. This is such an exciting time for them and they should be able to expirance it together.

I sure missed her today at the Garter ceremony and as many have said it was not the same without her. It was say seeing William riding without her by hsi side.

I loved the picture where William is talking to the young lady and I think he is telling her "this is how big my baby is now"...lol

As someone in the legal profession facts are what counts and fantasizes are just that.

    11. It will certainly be awkward for William not be able to speak to young attractive females without this sort of unpleasant speculation. They are his future subjects, after all. So what if he is flirting, and I don't say he is. It's a harmless human interaction that probably made the young lady smile all day, and that William forgot about immediately.

      Delete
    12. @Anonymous 18:56 I think your comment is very distasteful. I would think William would not be talking about his private parts. Whatever he is telling this young lady we will never know. I thought he could be talking about his baby to be but maybe not. I too think he was flirting a little. As we all know the apple does not fall far from the tree. Let's just hope he does not follow in the foot steps of his father. I don't think he will be we never know.

    13. @Greybird K
I have to disagree with you about it is ok for William to flirt with young ladies. He is a married man plan and simple. If his wife was present you would not see him flirting with other woman. Maybe talking to them. He has a very pregnant wife at home who could not attend. So I hope for Catherine's sake that he will behave himself at polo matches in the future.

Since I live in London and have seen so many royal men take mistresses and William's father is a good example, I hope William has learn a good lesson regarding what it can do to the wife and the children involved. I am not saying this is what William is doing.

    1. Agree. "The Queen has been graciously pleased to appoint Air Chief Marshal The Right Honourable The Lord Stirrup, GCB, AFC, ADC, to be a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. "

The appointment of the Knights and Ladies of the Garter is in The Queen's gift (i.e. without Prime Ministerial advice). Appointments to the Order of the Garter are therefore in the same category as the Order of the Thistle, the Order of Merit and the Royal Victorian Order which are also in The Queen's gift. Today's announcement brings the number of Companion Knights to twenty-two (out of a maximum of 24).

The Lord Stirrup is a former Chief of the Defence Staff.

The most recent three vacancies have been created due to the deaths of:

      1. The Duke of Grafton (7 April 2011)
      2. Viscount Ridley (22 March 2012)

  11. Of course someone knows the sex of the baby - but Kate and/or Wills maybe opted not to know...either way, if they know or not, it's official royal tradition NOT to announce the baby's sex until AFTER it's born. Now days they have put a written sheet out on the door of the hospital. My guess is it will go out by The Palace at the exact same time via social media. But certainly Kate has had ultra-sound and maybe even amnio to check for any abnormalities ahead of time. They did not get to keep the fact she was PG as they wanted to, but this is as always a very well kept secrete. I think it's a girl. Glad when I saw on our early AM that Prince Phillip is out of hospital - that was an earlier than expected release. Don't know how they do it - I look like trash when get released from the hospital!

Knee length, then a little above, and then higher still. Love it! This is in no way meant as a criticism - I just thought it was funny (or maybe I just need to get some more sleep)! If I had legs like hers, believe me, there'd be much more on display than the Duchess would ever show, and I think she's just being a modern royal. :) Lee

  16. I'd like some thoughts on this. I've gotten the feeling, a vibe if you will, for the last few months, that things are not as perfect as they seem at the House of Windsor. I don't know why but things have seemed a little odd lately and the Palace is being unusually (given that they want to cultivate positive feeling from the public) tightlipped about EVERYTHING, from Prince Phillip's "exploratory" - for an elderly man of 92 who isn't in great health to start with - surgery and what that was all about, to Kate's pregnancy and post-pregnancy plans. Most of the reports I've read in the UK and US press point to a "maternity leave" of about six months, mentioning that she won't be doing any engagements until early 2014 at least so there must be some grain of fact in there somewhere. I don't want to stir the pot but it's not like she's got a real job and even with the "job" she's got, she easily has the means and resources to have her baby right with her, even if the baby is out of the public eye. A six-month maternity leave even for a woman as privileged as Kate and ESPECIALLY for someone as popular with the public as she is right now, seems a bit excessive. The Palace has been so oddly vague about all of this recent activity, not to mention the early equally-vague reports about the pregnancy itself and the whole guessing game over her due date. Don't get me wrong - I don't want there to be problems at all. But it just seems like something is amiss in the House of Windsor. I know William dislikes the public and the media but it seems like the Palace is putting an unusually tight lid on any information, which could indicate problems or bad news within the royal family.

So are you trying to say in a nice way that there might be trouble in the marriage of William & his Duchess? If so what kind of things are you basising on? I for one don't think there is any trouble there. Even though I do think and this is just my opinion that in the one pictures of William at the polo match that he was flirting with the young lady. They old saying goes the cats away the mice will play. But this is just me.

As far as the maternity leave I have heard that is normal for a mother in the UK and Candad to take 26 weeks leave and some can take up to 52 weeks. So the Duchess is not taking anything that she is not entiled to.
I would not be surprised if we see the Duchess only doing engagements with William once she goes back to work. And doing her stuff with her charities. But I feel she will leave her charities at just the amount she has now for awhile. It does not mean taking on alot of charities that you do good with them. I think the less is more.

I did read where the palace has said there will be no more information given on Prince Phillips condtion. Now to me that can say alot of things.

To wrap this up I don'think there is much to worry about. Or anythign we can do about if there is. Let's just sit back and await the birth of the new Baby Cambridge and wish the Duke & Duchess a heathly birth.

    2. I think it would be great if all new mothers could take six months off their jobs if they want, and as long as the Queen has approved Catherine's official schedule, it's maternity leave, plain and simple. She doesn't owe the public anything on that score. She has private income. I expect she will have decades to smile and shake hands.

Elizabeth, my personal feelings about Prince Philip is we should allow him the freedom to age gracefully and with dignity without having to know every little detail of all the unglorifying things that come with age. As for William and Kate there is a lot of chatter, and chatter is all that it is until its official. Maybe ( The Palace) just plain doesn't have any idea about things until the last minute when they are told. I don't find any of it odd or secretive.

Actually there is news this evening that the birth will be at the Lindoe Wing of St Mary's Paddington, but with Reading and Anglesey ready in case of emergency.
Length of her maternity leave not yet decided.
If they gave a due date it would be impossible with press sitting on the doorstep.Their office says they will inform when she goes into hospital and labour is confirmed.
Seems to me we are being told a great deal.
As for the Duke of Edinburgh--we do not need to know the exact illness--after all he is 92.
When the Prince of Wales was born it was announced she would undertake no further public engagements--we just had to guess that she was pregnant.
As for maternity leave---most women take the full year--and what a nuisance that could be when we sometimes had three or four people on such leave.

  19. Sorry to disagree, but I think the "royals" have been quite generous with the media and their public appearances lately. I'm sure the palace wants to give Kate and William a "wide" window of family privacy, knowing that it could be much sooner than six months if everything is going well. They do like to have a few surprises... I think. I just read on the BBC website that neither Kate nor William know the sex of their baby. At least that's what they're saying. :-)

They do like to have a few surprises up their sleeves. I just read on the BBC website that neither Kate nor William know the sex of their baby. That's their story and their sticking to it! hee hee

  21. Elizabeth, I don't agree that William dislikes the public. During royal engagements he appears to be very engaging and approachable. What he does NOT like, and rightly so, is media intrusion into his private life. And yes, even a member of the royal family is entitled to SOME degree of privacy.

I believe Kate's pregnancy was announced earlier than they had planned because she had to go into the hospital. Otherwise, I think they would have preferred to wait until she was well beyond the first trimester before the news made the front pages. Nothing unreasonable, IMO. As far as her maternity leave is concerned, I think this has much to do with "lessons learned" and they will take it as it comes. If she is feeling okay (mentally and physically), I'm sure she will resume some degree of royal duties. But if not, it's clear that William is seeing to it that HIS wife has the support his mother was denied. Nothing amiss here. I can only give him credit for that.

Besides, I really can't deny them the opportunity to enjoy SOME time as new parents. After all, Charles is next in line, and Camilla certainly wanted her current role, so it's really up to them to play the more "leading roles" (compared to William and Kate) in the firm.

In Prince Philip's case, I think the royal family is trying to balance the tricky task of informing the public while respecting PP's privacy. And let's not forget that PP is very much a "man's man"; he would be the last person to want any attention and speculation regarding his health, or his ability to carry on as an active member of the royal family.
