Duchess Kate wears Zara Cape in South Kensington

Duchess Kate was out and about in South Kensington yesterday, shopping on Kings Road and picking up a bite to eat in Pret A Manger.

Customers at British sandwich retailer Pret a Manger were surprised to see the Duchess who came in and ordered a croissant before continuing with her shopping trip. There have been several reported sightings of Kate in her local Pret, it is obviously a favourite eatery of hers.

Megan Gidden was enjoying dinner in her local when Kate walked in. Megan described her as "so beautiful, what a nice person."

Livvy Whiddet was "star struck" when she walked past Kate yesterday.

The Duchess was also spotting shopping in GAP

There are a number of items from the retailer I could see Kate wearing casually, and they also have an online maternity range and an adorable collection of baby clothes such as the Peter Rabbit Collection.

GAP

Kate's cape was immediately ID'd by super sleuth Susan over at WKW FB as the Zara Checked Print Cape from the Fall 2010 Collection. It originally retailed for £129.90 and is now sold out. Kate also wore blue skinny jeans and ankle boots. I always love Kate's candid style and I think the cape is very chic and most importantly warm, given how cold it is at the moment.

Zara

For those of you hoping to 'Repli-Kate' this look, Michelle shared an almost identical piece. The Classic Glen Plaid Cape is currently available at Orvis reduced from £119 to £94.

It was an unexpected surprise to see Kate. I hope it indicates she's feeling better.

In other news, Kate has accepted honorary membership of the All England Club, although with the royal baby due in July it is unlikely the Duchess will attend Wimbledon this year. Kate is a talented tennis player and has attended matches at Wimbledon for years so it is a perfect role for her. The news has led many to believe the Duchess is being lined up to be the Duke of Kent's successor as All England Club President.

More from the Daily Mail's Richard Kay:

"Last summer Kate was a regular at the tennis, cheering on Andy Murray all the way to the final. Some will see her decision to accept the offer as the start of her relationship with the club. Certainly her presence at the championships has boosted the sport. A Palace spokeswoman said 'The Duchess was pleased to accept the kind offer, particularly given her interest in tennis.'"

Speaking of Andy Murray, the British No. 1 will play Novak Djokovic at 8 a.m. (GMT) in the Australian Open final on Sunday. I have no doubt Kate will be watching.

I hope you're all having a lovely weekend :)

    2. @Anonymous- When the Duchess is on offical royal duties then yes she can expect to have pictures taken of her. But when she is out on her own time then she as you & I are entitled to privacy.

And her job is not to be seen.

Good grief! Everyoneeee on the planet deserves a little privacy. A little down time to regroup. If your way of doing that is popping out for a walk to Starbucks, or whatever then, well done. Let's face it there is a percent of the world who doesn't get this. Lets be happy for those who do and try to help those who don't.
      Peace :)

  2. Thanks for the super fast post, Charlotte. :o) What a wonderful surprise to see Kate out and about! Not only does Kate look casually fashionable in the cape, it also covers her up nicely. I hope the Duchess is able to debut her growing tummy at a time of her choosing, especially since they were forced to announce the pregnancy earlier than planned.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  3. Thanks for this great latest photo of Duchess Kate! She is always stylish and that cape is great for warmth and for the ever growing baby bump! Hope your staying warm as well Charlotte! It would have been nice to see a front view, but hey this was great for now!! : ) It appears that the treats she probably did not eat before pregnancy are helping her perhaps from being nauseous! That can only be a great thing for her to hopefully enjoy her pregnancy in the rest of it's stages. Cheerio till next time!!

  5. Charlotte you did it again. Wow thank you for bring us this great piece. To bad we did not to see a picture of the Duchess from the front. I would love to have seen her baby bump. But maybe with the cape on we would not be able to see anything. It sure look's like mommy duchess is being very protective of her baby. And where were the protection officers? Sure hope the were just out side the door.

Nice to see she is feeling alot better now (??). Any idea if she has been back to Wales with William? I can't see her being away from him for any length of time. Also can't wait until she starts her engagements again in February. Here is hoping we will see William & her together at these engagements.

Thanks again Charlotte for all your hard work with the great blog for all us fans. You rock!!!!

    2. Stella- I would like to know also if she has been back to Wales with William. But then again with William working the 24 hr. shifts then there would be no one with the Duchess if she got sick again. So once I thought about it, it is better if she is in London near her doctors and family if she needs them. And I am sure that is the way William wants it (and the Duchess too).

So a question to you Charlotte, any idea if the Duchess has returned to Wales since she has had morning sickness. I just can't imgine her wanting to be away from William for any length of time.

    3. Hi Kate,

I've often thought that as I can imagine it being rather isolated for Kate, especially if William is on long shifts. She strikes me as a social girl so time on her own with Lupo day after day is OK in small doses but I think her heart lies with her family, shopping and London just as much as with William. I think she'll be based in London more and more for the aforementioned reasons and overseeing the work at KP.

    4. Marion from Germany27 January 2013 at 11:00

No, Stella, you are not the only one. I also think that Kate prefers to stay in London which is understandable as a capital is a much more thrilling place than the sleepy Anglesey. What is Kate supposed to do there apart from sitting around, bore herself to death until William's shift has ended?
Kate and William have spent quite an amount of years together so they are not longer head over heels in love and I assume that it is okay for Kate to stay "alone" in London with her sister, brother, parents not far away and hopefully some good friends around. And William sees it in the same way, I am sure.

      Delete
    5. I think Anglesey was perfect for William and Kate for a time because it kept them off the radar before they married and when they were first settling into married life. It gave them a sense of normalcy and anonymity.

But now, with a new home to organize (and what woman doesn't want to be hands-on with that!) and the pregnancy, it's logical that Kate is spending more time in London. And, although I hesitate to say this because ALL babies are precious, Kate is carrying a future King or Queen and I am sure that all risks must be minimized while the emphasis on her well-being is maximized.

    7. @Marion from Germany- I have to laugh at your comment regarding the Duchess & her Prince not being head over heels in love just because they have been together for a while. First off, just because they have been together for years does not mean their love for one another is not there. I guess you have not seen them during their joint engagements. William can not keep his eyes off his beautiful Duchess and her the same.

I think the reason she is not in Anglesey alot is because of the HG. She needs to be near her doctors and the hospital just in case. But as we have seen in the past few days, the beautiful Duchess has been out and about so to me that means she must be feeling better. And I am sure that William wants his wife near him but again he knows it is important for her to be near her doctors. We as fans really don't know what her condition is at this moment. We see she is looking beatufiul as always but that is just a few moments of her day.

So in my opinion I feel they are just as in love or more so with each other then when they got married.

@Pauline: Dear Pauline, first of all it made me smile that I made you laugh. I like that. :-)
I did not want to say that Kate and William are NOT in love anymore but a certain everyday routine must have slipped into their marriage - or is it only true for my husband and me? I have been married for 16 years now and I love my husband dearly, but when he is away for some days I just go on with my life (job, children, household duties, ...). In the past it was totally different because I could not think of anything but him when he was not around.
On the one hand I feel sorry for the change of that kind of romance but on the other hand such an amount of excitement cannot be healthy if it lasts for ages. ;-)

    9. Sorry, but IMO to suggest that these two aren't in love as much as ever is reaching for a "reality" that just isn't there.

    10. Hi Marion, I completely agree with you. For most of us in a long marriage or relationship (23 years for me) there is a maturing and mellowing that means you don't have to constantly be in each other's pocket. (As we say in the US) It doesn't mean we aren't in love or care less. It's a trite image but I see it like well-aged wine. William and Kate are an interesting couple because they have had a long and varied relationship, including a couple of breaks. There were times William seemed to feel he has missed out on something and was trapped by Kate and then found he couldn't do without her, and it made their relationship stronger. I see in them the easy humor and affection of a couple that knows each other well and love each other in an easy way. It's no insult to them, on the contrary, as you point out, a relationship that runs on intensity is far more likely to burn out.

How fun to see her out and about shopping! Hoping she is feeling well and is enjoying the wonderful 2nd trimester. :) I absolutely LOVE her hair straight. Wish I could see how the front was fixed. Also LOVE the Zara cape. I would love to have a piece like that in my wardrobe, but it was 76 degrees here today so not something that I would get much wear out of.

Funny story.... When I was in London this summer, my mother and I were shopping on High Street Kensington. We had a limited amount of time to grab a bite to eat. I was in the mood for a sandwich so a lovely lady told me to head to Pret A Manger, but mom wanted McDonalds. Both are right by the tube station (actually Pret A Manger is in the tube station). We headed across the street to McDonalds all the while my mother saying, "I'm sure this is where Diana used to bring William and Harry." I had no clue what Pret A Manger was, but now I really wish we had popped in. I was the good daughter who took my mother to McDonalds (even though she could have it here anytime). :(

I also shopped a couple times at The Gap High Street Kensington. I bought my kids some lovely things there. It's a large store with a great children's selection. Another children's store I discovered was Trotter's right next to High Street Kensington station. The clothes are absolutely adorable and very classy. Somewhere I could definitely see Kate shopping. I got my daughter a dress and some books for my bigger babies. :)

I think it's a lovely honor and glad Kate accepted the honorary membership of The All England Club. Wonder when the Duke of Kent will retire? He is getting up there in age. If Kate's pregnancy goes well and depending on when the baby comes, I am wondering if we will see her at some point at Wimbledon. I remember Diana being at Trooping The Colour right before William was born. Guess we'll see.....

Thanks for another great post! Hoping for another Kate sighting soon!

Wow, Sherlock Holmes has a friend in fashion! I have never been a great fan of capes but since I have read all the Sherlock Holmes stories both in English and German I appreciate Kate's choice.
I for one have bought my third pair of boots last week, this time with high heels - definitely Kate-inspired as I had never thought of wearing boots until Kate did so. I love them!
Regarding the upcoming spring, I have realised how many shops offer wonderful dresses that seem to follow the Kate-style. So I am going to lose some weight which I put on around Christmas (and some time before and after) and will broaden my fashion-horizon and get one or two of such dresses.

Lots of love from Germany to Charlotte and all of you fellow-readers, Marion

  10. What a nice surprise to see Kate. She must be in a shopping mood or a nesting instinct as it called. I remember while pregnant being constantly shopping. Even if not buying anything I would go around the shops, looking at baby clothes, prams, furniture, curtains, etc.

The cape is a perfect choice to cover up a growing baby bump. She is definitely prepared. I've got a cape too. It is my treasure: warm, comfy, stylish. It is a classic piece. Mine is wool cashmere blend, double sided: black on one side and grey on the other. It goes with everything.

  12. Oh what a great surprise!! :-) Thank you Charlotte!

And what a great idea to wear a cape (for a pregnant woman). Not only to shield the belly from view (and some paparazzi). I guess it isn't easy for a pregnant woman to find a suitable coat or you don't want to buy some new one. So I think it's a really good idea (to keep for an own pregnancy later-hehe).

And so I guess she won't buy so many extra clothes for the pregnancy..I could notice this on my friends too.

      Delete
    4. Bluhare: What I meant is that she does not want prying eyes on her belly (I think she's had enough of prying eyes). Pregnant women often complain about the world freely dispensing advice, touching their belly, gawking, etc. as if the general public was entitled to do so. A pregnant woman has the right to privacy. If the average pregnant woman gets intense, often unwanted attention, imagine the HRH. That's what I meant by "she has the right to protect her dignity" i.e. her privacy and not exacerbate the obnoxious scrutiny and invasion of privacy she is subjected to as a private individual (as in this case).

On another note: I've been a regular poster on this blog and have always been positive and respectful. Please stop assuming the worst possible intent when you read my comment or anyone else's.Silvia

      Delete
    5. Sorry you think a question is disrespectful Silvia. You didn't talk about privacy and people touching bellies. Like anyone could get close enough to do that. You talked dignity. And I asked what was undignified about being pregnant. I don't know why you think I'm not respectful, unless asking you about something you posted is disrespectful in itself.

Kate signed up for the public scrutiny, so she can't complain about it now (with the exception of those toples photos which was a huge invasion of privacy). If it wasn't an issue that concerned him, William probably wouldn't have waited ten years to get married. As they say, if Kate can't stand the heat, she shouldn't have got in the kitchen.

I have been hoping for some time that Kate would be given an honorary membership at the All England Club, and
do want her to be offered the position of President, once the Duke of Kent steps down. After all, William has
football, Harry has rugby, and the Queen has Ascot. This is an utterly perfect venue/duty for Kate. And speaking
of great patronages/duties for Kate, I would like to see her support an organization having to do with HG, or
severe morning sickness. Other patronages that I think she might enjoy include the V and A Museum, the
London Philharmonic, a theatrical group, perhaps fringe, and something in the world of fashion. She should leave
organizations such as UNICEF, which might take her out of the UK, until her children are in boarding school. Other
ideas, folks, I would like to hear. And by the way, I am of the opinion that 12 patronages, well-served, are far
better than 200 poorly done, aka the Queen.

Hi Lynn! It's nice to meet another Lynn posting to this site. I'll always sign in as "Lynn Georgia USA" so that our comments can be distinguished one from the other.

Incidentally the "Kate Middleton" references don't bother me unduly. I personally try not to use her Middleton name anymore, but I don't think the media or the Twitter contributors are being intentionally disrepectful. We all just knew her for so many years as Kate Middleton. (I think Duchess Catherine is probably more annoyed by the use of "Kate" than by the use of "Middleton.") Lots of women nowadays choose to retain their maiden names after marriage. (I actually think Zara Phillips is one who did.) Of course, Catherine Middleton did not really have that option upon becoming a Royal.

      Delete
    7. This issue has been addressed a few times in many platforms. Blogs, Twitter, etc. Allow me to give my 2 cents...

It is the internet age of keywording and tagging. The name "Kate Middleton" is a very valuable keyword in search engines. It's still more widely searchable and draws more hits than "The Duchess of Cambridge." And of course, a simple "Kate" isn't specific enough as there are dozens of popular Kates. Kate has been known as "Kate Middleton" for years. She's developed her brand long before she married into the royal family. It'll take time before people transition to her married name.

Bottomline is: I don't think anyone means any disrespect when they call Kate "Kate Middleton." It's all about keywords = hits = popularity / advertising revenue. All logistics.

      Delete
    8. Anonymous - I didn't see the article but theories regarding surrogacy are purely speculation in my opinion. It's amazing the stories the media can concoct when news is quiet.

    9. To Anonymous: If Kate's pregnancy is fake we will see it later when she will be 7-8-9 months pregnant. She must get a duck walk as any pregnant woman has at this stage. So just wait and see. If she doesn't have a duck walk, there is no baby under the cape:)

  24. It sort of bothered me for a time, but decided if Kate didn't like it she or the Queen would do something about it. In some ways seeing her maiden name might give her a sense of still being a normal, everyday woman.

I say this about everyday normal life - I think if doing an official engagement her proper title should be used and I have to admit I think of her as Kate Middleton. A well adjusted woman that now is forever in the spot light.

  25. Seeing Kate few times getting the food I was thinking last night, where does she eat it. I mean she bought the croissant. Then she takes it to where? Does she walk around the streets chewing that croissant, getting the greasy hands? Does she sit in a cafe and eats there? Does she take it with her to her Kensington home? Are there no chefs to bake her a croissants? Just curious. Not very classy for a Duchess to walk on the streets with food. Any thoughts?
