Duchess of Cambridge Is 'Much Better' As She Leaves Hospital Smiling in DVF Coat

The Duchess of Cambridge was discharged from King Edward VII Hospital this morning following four days of treatment telling reporters: "I'm feeling much better, thank you."

Following a three night stay at the private facility in London, Kate left today at 10.45 a.m. carrying a bouquet of flowers. She was admitted on Monday after falling ill at her parents' home in Berkshire and has been treated for Hyperemesis gravidarum, acute morning sickness which causes serious dehydration.

A St James's Palace spokesman said Kate will now return to Kensington Palace for a period of rest:

"The Duchess of Cambridge has been discharged from the King Edward VII Hospital and will now head to Kensington Palace for a period of rest. Their Royal Highnesses would like to thank the staff at the hospital for the care and treatment the Duchess has received."

Prince Charles spoke for the first time today about becoming a grandfather: "It's a very nice thought to become a grandfather at my old age."

William arrived at the hospital this morning and looked incredibly happy when he and Kate left. No doubt he will be delighted to have Kate home. The Duchess also looked in good spirits following a difficult few days. They left in William's green Land Rover for Kensington Palace, where they plan to move into the newly refurbished Apartment 1A in the new year.

The Duchess looked radiant in the DVF Simyonette Coat from A/W 2010 Collection (with many thanks to Kate Johnson who shared the ID via WKW FB). The coat is no longer available but originally retailed for $675.

Nordstrom

The coat is described on Nordstrom as:

"Pleats and a half-belt nip in the waist of a herringbone coat, classic in colour and pattern but modern in silhouette. The double-breasted style is accented with braided leather buttons."

Kate also wore her Russell and Bromley Charge boots and a purple scarf. Her hair was worn half up, a lovely look which framed her face nicely.

It's absolutely wonderful to see Kate returning home and looking so happy, isn't it? :)

There is a video of Kate's departure at ITN Source.

  3. So glad to see Kate doing better! She looks pretty as always, but also vulnerable. It makes me feel very protective of her! I'm sad we won't see her at the upcoming events as planned, but I'm glad she is going to lay low the next couple of weeks and take it easy during this exciting and stressful time.

It's beautiful to see our Duchess so happy! And, thankfully, she looks well. it has been a good surprise seeing her out of hospital. I thought she would have been at hospital more time! Congratulations again for her pregnancy!

  5. I just love the picture of them smiling at each other. I just can't imagine knowing that when I leave the hospital I would be facing a ton of reporters and having to look my best. I hope she is handing all the scrutiny as well as she appears to be. She and William are my favorite royals.

  6. Poor Catherine--she looked weary, but then hospitals are not the best places to get enough sleep.
Hope the rest of the pregnancy is better.

  7. Oh she looks radiant and like she's feeling so much better! So happy for her. I'm amazed how her hair and makeup is still perfect as always. You can tell though that she's tired and has been through an ordeal. Hopefully she can rest well now that she's home with her husband. I'm sure Lupo will be thrilled to see her too if he's in London :)

Good luck with your exams Charlotte, I'm sure you're ready to rest too.

  8. I was so happy to learn she went home, but I am still dreading that this might last for months and months. As I've said, I endured this and it basically lasted the entire nine months, but I praying that Kate has better luck.

Thank you for this blog it has been a real treat for me since like the others here I adore HRH Kate as I did Diana.

It's wonderful to see her smiling and happy. I do hope she won't suffer too much. After all, she doesn't have to have an extreme case of HG. Cross fingers !
Doesn't she look somehow younger and nearly vulnerable with her slightly fuller cheeks ? Really so very sweet and precious... And beautifully elegant. Love her style today.
    Gorgeous couple ;)

  10. Good to see, she feels better. Thought I doubt she really suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum - this is a very serious form of morning sickness and I know a lot of women were sick for weeks even though they were in hospital. So I guess she had just normal emesis gravidarum... but well, getting treatment for taht is probably the benefits of carrying a heir to the throne.

  11. HG is a pregnancy disease but it can be controlled with medication in most cases. I had HG when I was pregnant with twins (now toddlers). Mine started at 8 weeks and lasted till 14 weeks. I lost 7 pounds in the first 3 days before I called the doctor. However I was never admitted to the hospital - I was prescribed Zofran, told to drink and eat at will and report back after 4 hours. Thankfully it helped curb the symptoms and I was able to keep down a glass of water for the first time in 2 days. I slowly started getting better. I would take 1-2 tablets a day and it kept the nausea at bay. 3 days after that I was able to return to studying for my comprehensive exams for 10-12 hours a day. After I hit 14 weeks I stopped taking it altogether and I had a smooth pregnancy and healthy babies at 38 weeks. I cleared my comps at 25 weeks and was on my way.

It seems to be that Kate's condition is similar - the nausea hit like a ton of bricks but it's likely that Zofran is working. She has the luxury of being able to cancel her appointments, but many working mothers don't. She is also fortunate like I was, that the medication worked. For many women it does not work and they puke out their guts for months.

I feel really bad for her that they went ahead and revealed the secret so prematurely. Being pregnant and waiting to tell the rest of the world is such a special time in a couple's life. If they had not resisted the urge to tell and had just waited it out for a week they might have been able to ride it out and reveal to everyone at a time of their choosing. Of course there would have been a ton of speculation because she wouldn't have done any engagements.
Nevertheless she could have enjoyed some privacy. It must be absolutely horrid to live under a telescope during the most intimate times of a marriage.

    6. Hope your exams went well, Charlotte. As a lifelong educator, I have, in fact, worried about your study schedule in view of the many hours you must spend researching and composing your very wonderful posts. I don't know what you are majoring in at university, but I think you should consider a career in journalism (You write quite well.) or marketing/public relations (What a great job you do for businesses that you endorse!). And you are already a wonderful ambassador for Great Britain--its trade, its history and heritage, its way of life--so the State Department or the Royal Family (!) should hire you without delay. At any rate, I hope the excellent job you are doing on HRH Kate will serve as a springboard for a successful and happy career. When will you graduate?

Thank you for your words of encouragement. They are deeply appreciated and mean a lot to me. I'm a finance and law student at the moment. This is my final year and afterwards I plan to a MBA or something related to the field.

I often thought of studying to become a Royal Historian, but with the current jobs market I decided not too. The blog is a wonderful outlet to discuss all things about William and Kate and a nice break from studying.

      Thank you again Lynn :)

  16. Charlotte- Hope all your exams went well. Oh do I remember those times. But I did not do a blog either. You are the best.

The beautiful duchess looked good but still very tired. I loved the picture of William looking at his Duchess. YOu can tell by these pictures how in love they are. And how happy William is to have his Duchess out of the hospital and back home with him. I just hope that William will still be able to stay with her for a few more weeks before he has to return to duty.

Is it possible that if the Duchess continues to be ill (I sure hope this time in the hospital was the first & last)that William can get special leave and stay by her side? I know if it was me I would want my husband by my side and I hope William will be there for her. So far he has shown what a doting husband/daddy he is and going to be.

I hope she cintinues to recovery and get's stronger daily. She will have the best care at home as she did while in the hospital.

    1. I wouldn't worry about William getting leave. For all the talk about him being "just one of the guys," I'd guess he comes and goes when he pleases. He's the heir to the heir to the throne. The rules that apply to active-duty military and their wives and families don't apply to him or Harry.

  20. For all that she's been through the last few days, she looks much better and she looks terrific without the layers of makeup she usually wears, MUCH younger and more like her pre-wedding days! Love her hair half up and half down too. She looks better in these pics than she has at many of the formal events of the past few months!! I will also point out, again, that for all that she's a "commoner," Kate seems to have the skills with the media and the public that William, who has been raised and trained in public life, consistently lacks. Also, an extremely wise and clever play by the Windsor PR spinmeisters to make her leaving the hospital a public appearance, instead of trying to smuggle her out of the hospital and back to KP unseen. That way, no rumors are floated and the public can see for themselves her condition.

I agree with what you say about Catherine's skills with the media, but having her by his side seems to have given William added confidence too. It was very obvious last week in Cambridge when he was given the baby romper.

  26. Just wanted to share my relief and joy with the rest of the community with the news of Kate's discharge from hospital. Like many have said, we rejoice at the prospect of a baby, but at the same time need to remember that these are such early days. The mother & baby's health is most important, and I hope the rest of Kate's pregnancy won't be so difficult.

On a side note, I'd like to say how very impressed I was with William throughout all this. He is a very loving and doting husband indeed. It's very atypical of a royal to visit long hours in hospital every single day. The Queen herself only visited once during the Duke's 3 hospital admissions. I know it may be a generational change, but props to William for looking after his wife. The relief you see on his face is palpable.

At this early and delicate time, allow me to share a prayer issued by the Church of England for William, Kate and their baby. I think it's a beautiful prayer...

    God our creator,
we thank you for the wonder of new life
and for the mystery of human love.

We pray for William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge
as they prepare to receive the gift of their child.

We thank you that we are known to you by name
and loved by you from all eternity,
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

I think William looked great, and Catherine of course classy as ever even though obviously tired. The hair I like pulled back, but those "wings"!! I'm guessing she will grow it out again. It would look so much classier pulled back and not hanging. But she would look good with a paper sack on her head. Just a classy beautiful woman.

  36. Kate is lucky that she will have so much support during her pregnancy. She will have servants to cater to her every whim and a husband who seems to be able to take days off work! Many women have this condition and can't afford the luxury of being admitted to a luxury private hospital with care from two top consultants. I wish Kate a healthy pregnancy but do feel the amount of comments about poor , frail Kate are way over the top!

    1. I agree. She and William have an army of servants and staff to look after their every need and they'll have even more help after the baby arrives. She has and will receive the most elite medical and prenatal care available. I don't want to sound unsympathetic but I think some folks need a reality check. We're not talking about a middle-class British couple here, we're talking about the most privileged of the privileged. I particularly think of the expectant mothers whose husbands are currently deployed in Afghanistan, who don't have the luxury of their husbands being able to stop their military service to be at their sides.

    Hello everybody,

I have just learned that the nurse, who was the victim of this telephone joke, was found dead in her flat today. I am totally shocked and cannot really understand what happened. The official statement is that she seems to have committed suicide. But then why would anyone end their life just because of such a silly joke? And if it was not the joke, was it the reaction of crazy people putting pressure on her because of a little mistake that in two weeks time no one would talk about? Was she bullied by colleagues, was she expecting the media to call her names like "the worlds dumbest nurse"?
Someone mentioned the royal family’s right to privacy, but that is also true for each end every one of us non-royal people. And not to forget forgiveness!
I am so sorry for this poor woman and wish there had been someone taking her into their arms to comfort her and try to tell her that no real damage has happened because of that little silliness.
Can anyone explain to me what kind of a world we live in???

On another note, congratulations to you, dear Charlotte. I am convinced that your exams will turn out to be a complete success. You have proved a thousand times that you are an intelligent young woman and your heart is in the right place. And that is the most important thing to me at the moment, especially as it is Christmas time.

  49. I am just so upset over this and I am upset too that the DJs weren't punished in anyway before this death. At least I haven't read they were punished in any way. 51. I was very saddened with the news of the death of that poor nurse. I just read where the two DJ's will not return to their show until further notice. I hope this means that they have been fired. I also think (my opinion only) should be held responsible for the death. I say this because "if the DJ's did not call in and pretend to be the Queen & Charles this nurse would be here today."

And the beautiful Duchess does not need this added stress knowing that this wife & mother will not be hear to see her two small children grow up. I jsut don't understand all of this. It is very very sad. And I do have to say really pisses me off.

    1. @ Pauline - honestly, after seeing what the public outrage over the leaked information caused the poor nurse to do, do you really think it's appropriate to stir up MORE outrage against the DJs and hold them responsible for the death? How would you feel if one of them committed suicide, or received threats as a result of this terrible outcome?

It is simply abhorrent to react to this tragedy by finding ways to cast stones and blame. Let Jacinta's family grieve in peace, and leave the DJs alone before another tragedy occurs.

      Delete
    2. @ Anonymous 20:47 - I don't think Pauline's comment is over the top. I don't wish anyone physical harm, but it isn't a stretch to say that extremely irresponsible and immature judgment set the wheels in motion here. I can't speak for other countries, but if this happened in the US, I'm sure we'd be reading about a wrongful death lawsuit in the near future.

    3. @20:47 This is not the first time these DJ have ruined lives. There is another case one of them was involved in dealing with the rape of a child.

Pauline, I agree with you. These DJ's should be legally punished for this. I'm sorry if it sounds harsh or something. But I don't think it is right for someone to be funny by mocking someone else. And in this particular case, a woman has commited suicide. I hope this case shall not be forgotten.

    5. I find it astounding how quickly your opinion has changed. Two days ago you were saying the nurses should be fired. Now the DJ's need to be tried? Let this story end already for the sake of her family. It's more likely that crazed fans and press were tormenting her than the call itself.

    6. Sorry 04:04 but noone knew the name of the nurses before her death. This trying to blame Kate fans is very transparent.

I have just read the "Daily Mail"-coverage and learned that the two Australian radio presenters have now become the victims of a worldwide shitstorm, which is to be criticized sharply, at least in my view. I am convinced that they did not expect their prank to turn into such a nightmare. If they had known how the whole joke turned out, they would not have started that.
I can only hope that not another tragedy will occur. This is so sad, but they do not deserve to be threatened to death. I read that someone even announced he would harm the mother of one of the presenters. This is really a mad world. Where does all the aggression come from?

I wish you all a peaceful Christmas. I do not believe in a God but Jesus Christ is a role model we can all learn from. So I cannot pray for others, but at least I wish all of us more understanding and helpfulness.

I agree with you, Marion, about this terrible aggression in our societies. The paparrazis, the whole internet stuff, twitter... People react so quickly, do not think, and there is no respect anymore. Everything is fast and brutal.
Yes, we need more understanding, helpfulness, kindness and respect.

  54. I love all of he positiveness on this blog! I abhor reading the comments about this lovely couple on tabloid sites. They are such bitter, jealous comments! This blog is a relief!!! Thanks Charlotte for the pics and info on the coat. Obviously, it's sold out by now! :( Like others are saying, I pray that the nurse's family are comforted during this most tragic time.

  55. This is not the DJ's fault. You think even in their most wicked intentions, they wanted someone to die as a result of their prank? Many of Kate and William's fans called for the nurse to be fired for giving out "confidential" information (such as 'she's sleeping').

The call was harmless but the reaction by royalists and fans was what made the situation absurd.

    1. @ Anonymous 20:22: Thank you for saying this. I agree fully. The DJ's prank was irresponsible and maybe a bit mean-spirited, but they didn't even think they would get through to anyone, much less that something like THIS might happen. The public reaction to the prank call, especially the people roundly criticizing the nurse and calling for her to be fired/disciplined, has more of a nexus to this terrible event than the initial phone call. Before people jump on the bandwagon and start criticizing the DJs even further, think twice about how you would feel if one of the DJs committed suicide as a result of the mob mentality that's forming as a backlash to their prank. Is it REALLY necessary to stir up public outrage over a prank call in which hardly any identifying information was leaked? Must we overreact to everything that might inconvenience or embarrass the royals?

My heart goes out to Jacinta's family and the staff at the hospital who worked with Jacinta.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous 20:43. I agree. They did NOT think. They did not think they were wasting the valuable time of hospital staff and disrespecting a patient's right to privacy. How sad for our society that the expectation of responsible judgment (and accountability in cases where it's disregarded) is frowned upon.

      Delete
    3. So do you know that Kate and Williams fans called for the nurse to be fired? Where are your receipts? Where are the names? Are'nt you also jumping the gun and blaming a group of people without names, without individual posts? Please don't use this person's death to brand a group of people.

None of this would have happend if the initial call was not placed. None if this would have happend if two fools thought it was funny to prank call a sick woman.

      Delete
    4. @ Anonymous 23:01 - really? You never saw anyone calling for the nurse to be fired? On this site alone (I'm not using names because I think that might be seen as attacking specific posters) I saw at least a couple of "fire the nurse!" posts. One example: "i am sorry but I do not feel sorry for the nurse . . . The hospital need's to deal with this nurse either by firing her or putting her on probation." The comments were a lot worse on stories at the Dailymail other newspapers.

@ royalfan - Calling for accountability is one thing, mob mentality is another. The DJs SHOULD be held accountable for what they did, which was broadcasting a prank call in which they fraudulently elicited some confidential medical information. However, claiming that the DJs have blood of their hands or need to be held responsible for Jacinta's suicide is just over the top. Falling prey to mob mentality and attacking the DJs en masse is not going to bring Jacinta back or undo Kate's loss of privacy.

    6. I commented in Charlotte's post about the hoax that people need to lay off the nurse. People commented ON THIS BLOG that the nurses should reprimanded. It was everywhere. People are so quick to pass judgement.

    7. Anonymous 00:31- very well said. I'd agree that mob mentality was more dangerous in this situation than the prank call.

Even on this site people are (in my opinion) very liberal in what they say about others. It's so easy to attack people facelessly on her but she was a very real person feeling the weight of all of this. May God bring her family peace.

    8. @ Anonymous 8 Dec 00:31
I'm not sure how you can acknowledge that they are reponsible for prank calling a hospital, obtaining and broadcasting confidential medical information, and yet NOT consider them responsible for the consequences. They made a conscious decision to make that call, and as a result they are responsible for the events it triggered.

If some fool walks into a movie theater and yells "fire," and people are hurt or worse as a result, it doesn't cut it to say, well, he really didn't intend for that to happen.

      Delete
    9. @ royalfan - entire torts courses at law school are devoted to examining chains of causation and discussing just how far the chain the law should go to impose liability.

My take as a lawyer is that your analogy to yelling "fire" in a crowded theater is inapposite. The major difference is that the person yelling "fire" can reasonably foresee causing panic or a stampede as people try to rush out. I do NOT think that it is fair to say that the DJs should have reasonably foreseen that someone would have committed suicide as a result of a prank call. You may disagree with that, but all I am trying to say is that we should hold people accountable for the reasonably foreseeable consequences of their actions, and I personally do not think Jacinta's suicide was a reasonably foreseeable outcome.

And the other point I am trying to make is that I think mob mentality (either the initial backlash directed at the nurse and DJs for the breach of privacy, or the current wave directed at the DJs for the suicide) is pointless. It's also very disturbing to observe how quickly public opinion can turn on people, and how eager people are to find a scapegoat when a tragedy occurs. Regardless of what I think of the DJs actions, I AM worried about the fact that they're receiving threats from across the globe.

      Delete
    10. I was not suggesting that the two situations are IDENTICAL. But I do believe that conscious, reckless actions/decisions have consequences and people should be held accountable in SOME way. The DJ's part in this did NOT end with the phone call.

  56. the dj's have now been suspended indefinitely and their show has been cancelled. i am glad there is some justice. they didn't want anyone to die of course but they must understand there are consequences to their actions and pranks.

    1. I definitely agree they should be suspended! They do things like this without ever thinking of the consequences to those involved. They are equal to bullies in my opinion!

    2. I agree with Anonymous 20:31 and Christy, but I'm not sure I'd categorize this as justice. It's more like the DJ's and the big-shots at the radio station are laying low until some time passes. I wouldn't rule out a comeback at some point. Without legal consequences (for the radio station and DJ's), it will come down to $$$ and ratings.

What dreadful and sad news about the nurse. All my prayers go to her family and friends.

I do wonder though if it was only the prank phone call which led to this tragic end. She must have been fragile or had other sad problems. Maybe the police will investigate ? After all, I'm sure the Duke and Duchess reassured her that it wasn't her fault. She only transferred the call and didn't say anything, except probably "It's Her Majesty" to the other nurse, who fell for it. At 5.30 in the morning, if I read properly the articles !!! They weren't prepared. Sadly their supervisors didn't think this could happen. They didn't warn them to be careful of fake phones and odd people who would try to enter the hospital to take photos.
But the whole story is devastating, and the Duchess must feel so bad.

Of course you can write a post, Charlotte, if you feel like it. You are always respectful.

    1. This is truly shocking. I feel so much for Jacintha's family and especially her two children.

I think everyone needs to think before they make judgements though. The DJs had absolutely no idea that their stupid, completely unfunny prank was going to cause the death of an innocent person. They said themselves that they didn't expect to even get through to the hospital, let alone speak to Kate's nurse. This is going to haunt them for the rest of their lives, and the threats they are receiving aren't going to help in any way. At the same time, Jacintha's family are going to have to live with this too. It's truly tragic. But let's not cause yet another tragedy by taunting these people who are no doubt in a terrible state already after what they have done.

    2. @ Theresa, I agree with you, for someone to get to the point of committing suicide in a situation like this, it must be because her life should have other complications or she should be emotionally shaken by other problems, and the story of the phone call was only the trigger for it to commit suicide. Especially because she was not a nurse who passed the information on Kate, in fact, she simply transferred the call, then it is difficult to understand why she has been so pressed about to take that attitude. But this death needs further investigation because suicide it is still a hypothesis. However, I would like to express my sorrow for the death of a nurse and I sympathize with her family.

Dear Charlotte, number one you get some sleep and take care of yourself and your relationship with your finance! I am shocked by the news of the nurse. It's the media frenzy all over again. Heart breaking; all that (William especially) and Kate don't want and try to avoid. Can't even think this all through taking care of my parents tonight. Take care.

There is a very interesting interview of Ken Wharfe, the policeman who used to take care of Princess Diana, on ITN news. He explains that the security procedure of the hospital was not in place. When any member of the Royal family is there, the phone calls asking for them go straight to a police officer. Obviously the switchboard had not been warned. It is not so much the nurses' fault, but the fault of those responsible who didn't check the procedure was operating. It's incredible, as everyone knows the media frenzy around the Duchess.
It seems to me the people responsible for the privacy of the Duke and Duchess should ask themselves what is going on. After all, they also had the public road problem in France.

    ReplyDelete
  61. The nurse who has so sadly died--and it is not yet officially known how are why she died, did not give out any information, merely passing the call to Catherine's nurse.
My question would be why was a nurse covering the switchboard of a hospital like King Edward VII with a high-profile patient and the world's press sitting outside? It reminds me of my early days as a young night sister when I had to listen for the switchboard whenever the porter/ telephonist had other jobs to do. That was over fifty years ago and nor was it a hospital with royal and other high-profile patients and I thought things had changed since then.
I have been retired for a number of years, but during my working years the media were often a problem and these two stupidly juvenile jokers are little different.
However it seems to me that we should leave it to the coroner to sort out what occurred and just pray for those affected-- Jacintha's children and husband and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. who have enough worries about her health and that of her unborn child, without this added sadness.

I hope the Ducehss is getting all the rest she need's and is getting stronger everyday. I am sure William is making sure she get's the rest and is eating when she can.

Thanks again Charlotte for all your hard work on this great blog. It is the best and so are you.
