From St James' Palace:
'Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that the Duchess of Cambridge is expecting a baby.
'The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Princes of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Harry and members of both families are delighted with the news'.
The statement went on to explain that Kate is currently being treated in King Edward VII Hospital as she is suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum (very acute morning sickness), which requires supplementary hydration and nutrients. The Duchess is expected to remain in hospital for several days.
'As the pregnancy is in its very early stages, Her Royal Highness is expected to stay in hospital for several days and will require a period of rest thereafter'.
The Palace refused to comment on when the couple became aware of the pregnancy but it is thought Kate is less than twelve weeks pregnant. Aides say Kate's need to go to hospital forced the announcement perhaps earlier than it would have been otherwise. Kate was with her family in Bucklebury, Berkshire when she was taken ill and travelled to the hospital by car.

My own mother suffered with Hyperemesis Gradvidarum and described it as "an incredibly difficult pregnancy disease resulting in weight loss, malnutrition and persisting nausea and vomiting". It is estimated the percentage of pregnant women afflicted range from 0.3% to 2%. The cause of HG is unknown but it is thought it is an adverse reaction to the hormonal changes during pregnancy. Women experiencing HG often are dehydrated and lose weight despite efforts to eat and drink.
The Hyperemesis Education & Research Foundation released a statement sending their thoughts and prayers to Kate:

William and Kate were last seen together on Wednesday in Cambridge.
You may recall Prince William looked rather pleased to receive the gift of a babygro with 'Daddy's little co-pilot' written on it.

Naturally, Kate's next three engagements have been cancelled meaning the Duchess will be unable to attend the ICAP Charity Day on the 5th, the Winter Whites Gala on the 8th and the British Military Tournament on the 9th.

UPDATE: Prince William was photographed leaving the hospital at roughly 8.30 tonight after spending the day by Kate's side.
I am absolutely delighted for William and Kate. They will make fantastic parents, a huge congratulations to both of them. I hope Kate recovers shortly and enjoys a happy and healthy pregnancy. It is also a wonderful day for the Royal family who only found out about the pregnancy today.
Now the question is, will it be a boy or a girl? :) I'll be updating the post as news comes in.

Yay! I'm so happy for them!
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful news!!!
ReplyDeleteMy guess - its a beautiful little girl.
D.
And of course, wishing the duchess a full and speedy recovery and an uneventful pregnancy from now on.
DeleteFabulous news! As long as Kate and the baby are healthy, that's all that matters.
ReplyDeletePauline from California, we were right on the 25th November with our comments, great news!!
Best wishes to them both.
PPx
Hooray!!! So excited for them. I hope she rests in the hospital. Announcing early was probably not their plan.
ReplyDeleteGreat news! So happy for them!! Hope she gets better soon!!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations William and Kate, what wonderful news. I hope your feeling better soon Kate. God Bless.
ReplyDeleteWonderful :D
ReplyDeleteBEST WISHES TO THEM :)
That's wonderful news - I'm so happy for them!
ReplyDeleteSo happy for them!
ReplyDeleteWoW! Fantastic News! Kate will make a Great Mother!
ReplyDeleteI know all of us readers are so excited and have been waiting for this day for so long!! I hate they didn't get to announce it on their own terms, and that she had to cancel her upcoming engagements. I know we all couldn't wait to see what she wore to the Winter White gala! I'm sure this has put plenty of pressure on Will's upcoming decision.
ReplyDeleteBut obviously the important thing is that she recovers soon and has a healthy happy pregnancy. I'm sure it's not easy with the whole world watching! I personally can't wait to see her maternity style. Thanks for the update Charlotte!
It doesn't matter whether it's a boy or a girl as long as both mother and child are healthy! I am sure the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will make fine parents. :)
ReplyDeleteI am ecstatic! How wonderful for them.
ReplyDeleteYay!
ReplyDeleteSo excited, can't wait to be inspired by Kate's pregnancy style - even if it's for the future :)
Wish them my best and hope that she'll be fine soon.
Ooooh!!! Exciting! :0D
ReplyDeleteThanks Charlotte for this awesome news!!!!i hope it's a girl!!:)))gosh I'm having Kate withdrawals already :(
ReplyDeleteMe, too! All for good reasons though!! I'm sure the Duchess will also be making waves in maternity-wear fashion!!! Silvia
DeleteOh what lovely news! So happy for them and wishing Kate a speedy recovery and a happy pregancy!
ReplyDeleteI agree that they wouldn't have announced it yet if Kate needn't go to hospital, but as she will miss the ICAP charity day on wednesday as she has to stay in for some days, they probably wanted to tell what's up and not making up some reason why she couldn't be there.
Best wishes to them!
EEEE so much fun! I can't wait to see her materinty fashions but I wonder if she will keep an ultra low profile while she's pregnant. Guess we shall see! I hope she gets better soon and can go home.
ReplyDeleteThis is fabulous news! I wonder if they knew before she became ill?
ReplyDeleteIt would be interesting to know, I was worried when the photos came out that she played a bit of field hockey at her last engagement. I don't think she would have run around if she knew.
Oh well! Hopefully she recovers from being sick! It's no fun this morning sickness!!

If a mother-to-be was active before her pregnancy(and Kate and Prince William have been photographed after their marriage coming out of a gym)she can be active during her pregnancy.
DeleteThe fetus is well-protected and moderate exercise is to be encouraged throughout the pregnancy.
All you have to do is think about how many mothers, pregnant for the 2nd time, that you have seen balancing a 2 year old on their hip, or chasing after that same toddler. Pregnant women can - within reason - do the same things that they did before they were pregnant.
It is very important to remember that pregnancy is not a illness.
DeleteOf course not but HG is a pregnancy disease.
DeleteHG is a very debilitating pregnancy disease, I agree! But Kayla wrote right above that if she knew she was pregnant, Catherine wouldn't have run and I completely disagree with it. She wasn't running a marathon, she was just playing with kids and pregnancy itself doesn't forbid you to do that, because it is not a disease. Except when you have a condition, like placenta previa or cervical incompetence, when if you walk you can put your baby at risk.
DeleteCrossing my fingers and hoping that she doesn't have a severe or persistent case of HG. I really feel for those that women that do (and I have seen several cases).
ReplyDeleteThis is fabulous news. Here are my namesL
ReplyDeleteGirl: Catherine Elizabeth Diana Carol
Boy: Albert William Charles Michael
I hate that she is sick and, from a very selfish standpoint (I am just being honest), I hate that we are going to miss out on some pretty outfits that she would have worn during her next three engagements. Sickness is a bummer in all aspects. I hope they can get her morning sickness under control. I have a friend who had this and it is awful.
Two things to point out: Jessica Hays actually knew of the pregnancy. And I, although very happy with the news, I get weird Duchess to stay "several days" in the hospital because of sickness. I hope it is just that and nothing more serious. Anyway, Congratulations William and Kate.
ReplyDeleteSo happy/excited for the Duke & Duchess William & Catherine! And I don't even know them!
ReplyDeleteWonderful new folks!! I'm sure they will make super parents. A star is born. All the love in the world.

Wonderful news !
ReplyDeleteBut I do so very much hope she will be feeling better soon. After all, this "acute" morning sickness seems rather awful to bear.
None of my friends had it - they just had more or less "normal" morning sickness, though several had to say bedridden the last three months.
Prayers and fingers crossed she gets over it quickly ;)
I'm very happy for them!
ReplyDeleteIt's terribel to be forced to announce it so soon when all you want to do is protect this little wonder and be over at least one save point (12 weeks). I can speak from my own experience. And it does not matter if its a girl or a boy. We will know soon enough.
I wish them all the best and a lot of health.
Thank you, Charlotte! What excellent news!!! I'm so sorry that Kate is having to go through HG. :o( She's so slender that she doesn't have any weight to lose, so it's good that she's hospitalized and is receiving IV nutrition and fluids. Praying that the Duchess is well very soon, and that she enjoys a wonderful, healthy pregnancy!
ReplyDeleteIt is absolutely wonderful news. I'm absolutely thrilled for them.
ReplyDeleteI included some info on HG in the post. My mother suffered from it and it is a particularly difficult illness. Wishing Kate a speedy recovery and plenty of rest.
Thank you for doing this. HG is so much more than morning sickness...but we can all hope that Kate has only a short bout of it.
DeleteMariby - My mother was incredibly ill with HG during all of her pregnancies and whilst talking to her earlier she said apart from the illness it's people's attitude and lack of understanding about it that is so difficult for expectant mother.
DeleteI am so sorry Kate has to go through it but it's really going to highlight it and I hope it leads to more research.
Wow, that's great to hear! Congratulations to the Duke and Duchess!
ReplyDeleteI hope Catherine can make a quick recovery.
So very happy for them! My prayers are with both of them, but especially Kate. Praying for rest and a happy, healthy baby. I really hope the press will give Kate a chance to rest even though everyone has desperately waited for this announcement. Fantastic news!!!
ReplyDeleteCongrats to both Will and Kate! They will make wonderful parents!
Congratulations to Wills and Kate! I'm so happy for them! This is FANTASTIC news. I really hope that Kate will recover very soon. I am sure she will have a beautiful baby. Boy or girl I would not mind as long as the child is in good health.
ReplyDeleteYAY!
Monica, France
Wonderful news. I have just finished my fourth bout of HG and am 23 weeks pregnant. I know how hard it is and am praying for Kate's sanity and good health as well as the baby's.
ReplyDeleteGoodluck to her and all the family.
Kate H
Anonymous...congratulations on your pregnancy & although you are a stranger, I'm happy that you are feeling better. Thanks for shedding light on HG.
DeleteI had morning sickness which lasted throughout the day for the first 4 months of pregnancy. Thank God baby was healthy. I pray Duchess Catherine will tough it out. Those months seemed to move so slow for me. But well worth it when I finally saw my baby girl face to face. There is a book called Fertility, Cycles & Nutrition by Marilyn Shannon for any women interested in easing symptoms of severe morning sickness. I will keep William, Catherine and baby in my prayers until baby is born safely!
ReplyDeleteMy goodness, four months of sick sounds horrible, every milestone must be a tremendous relief.
DeleteWishing her the very best. She seemed fine last week during her engagements, eating and being very active so it must have just started up. Hopefully, it won't last long, although the only cases I've known of kept the mother in bed during a lot of the pregnancy. Maybe, the fact Kate is being hospitalized early will help.
ReplyDeleteThat's so great to hear! I whish them the very best! Congratulatons to them!
ReplyDeleteSooo exciting!!!!!! I think it will be a baby girl :)
ReplyDeleteMe too.. With red hair.
DeleteIm very happy, congratulations.
ReplyDeleteWhat a big surprise and how wonderful! I'm so thrilled about it!! Can't believe it!!
ReplyDeleteI hope get well soon for having a wonderful pregnancy! I hope (also it is a little bit unrealistic) that the press leave her alone...a little bit.
They will be wonderful parents...oh my god...can't believe it!! Soo good!
I'm jumping with the joy of the news.
ReplyDeleteI wonder has anyone else thought that she wore that belt (bow one) upside down on purpose??
They are such a fun couple that I'm thinking they did it to draw attension.. In an odd way.
Do you see what I'm trying to say?? Difficult to put into words. But on the balcony they seemed to be enjoying a joke.
I was pretty sure that she was pregnant. Wonderful news.
ReplyDeleteIm very happy, congratulations.
ReplyDeleteIm very happy, congratulations.
ReplyDeleteAmanda from Brazil.
Good news that Catherine is pregnant, but sad that she is so unwell.
ReplyDeleteHope and pray that all will be well.
Oh my gosh!
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited, I screamed for joy when I read this post.
This is the best news I have had in weeks!
Congratulations Wills and Kate.
They will make wonderful parents.
Get well soon Kate.
We love you!!!
Hannah From Brisbane, Australia
Congratulations to William & Kate!
ReplyDeleteMy twitter blew up this morning once the news broke and I haven't been score to separate myself since! How is it that their baby will be a prince/princess, if they are only a duke & duchess? Isn't a prince/princess higher in the rankings? Just curious.
-Brit
Congratulations to William & Kate!
ReplyDeleteMy twitter feed blew up this morning & I haven't been able to separate myself since! Do you know why William & Kate's child be be a prince/princess if they are only a duke & duchess? Isn't a prince/princess a higher ranking? Just curious.

As for the titles, it is a little confusing but when the Queen dies, William and Kate will be known as the Prince and Princess of Wales.
DeleteSimilarly Andrew is known as the Duke of York but his daughters use the title Princess.
William is a Prince hence his child is also a prince/princess.
DeleteThink of Prince Charles - his children are princes.
To be honest its more complicated than that, but the titel of Duke of Cambridge is secondary to Williams title of Prince (which he has had since he was born
You should add pictures of William leaving the hospital!
ReplyDeleteI did.
DeleteWonderful news!! I wish all the best to the the Duke & Duchess, and I hope Kate recovers very soon.
ReplyDeleteVery happy for the Duke and Duchess. I hope she gets feeling better. They will make wonderful parents!! Robin USA
ReplyDeleteGreat news about the pregnancy - bad news she is so ill right now.
ReplyDeleteI was beyond happy to hear the news! They will make wonderful parents for sure. I just hope she has a smooth pregnancy and that the baby is healthy. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy for the parents-to-be and pray for a healthy pregnancy and royal birth.
ReplyDeleteI just read a story on Yahoo Shine. Their top pick name for a girl is: Charlotte. Wouldn't that be a happy coincidence for our dear Charlotte!!!
:)
DeleteOMG I was watching a show on TV this morning (8:00am California time) and it was announced that they were expecting but that the Duchess was in the hospital. At that time my heart just fell and a big knot was in my throat. But hearing she had that nasty morning sickness I felt a little better. I had morning sickness for the first 6 months of my first pregnancy. I hope the Duchess does not suffer that long. Back then there was not much the doctor did for me. Told me to eat a cracker before I got out of bed. Nothing helped. I wish the Duchess a speedy recovery with that nasty mornign sickness.
ReplyDeleteI do want to wish the William and Catherine congrats on the good news. You both will be wonderful & loving parents.
I would like to ask all of the Duchess fans here on this great blog to get a prayer chain going to keep our Duchess and her handsome husband in our daily thoughts and prayers.
thank you Charlotte for thsi great blog and now we all have something to look forward to. I can;t wait to see her pregnancy outfits. But I just wonder if she will keep out of site for awhile. William will be more protective now and I did read something some where that she will have additional body guards. Charlotte is that true???
Oh Charlotte Do you know if her parents are with her at the hospital too??? I know William has been by her side all day but what about her mom & dad.
ReplyDeleteThe press didn't say Pauline but I would think the Middleton family were definitely by her side.
DeleteIt's amazing news!
It is truely the best news anyone of the fans who love the Duchess can get. I feel she is one my daughters...lol But I have boys...lol
DeleteNow we have to sit back and see what William is going to do with his career. I hope he decides what is best for his family.
When he was in the Blues & Royals is when he and his Duchess broke up becasue he was out partying with all the other officers. But he was just in his early 20's then. Now he has a beautiful wife and a baby on the way. He will be great daddy and the Duchess is going to be a great mommy. Now we have to wait.
Yay! Great news! Congratulations to Will & Kate. Hope she gets better soon and goes on to have a healthy baby.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations William and Kate!!! I hope Kate feels better soon.
ReplyDeleteI just want to know one thing! Did anyone tell Lupo yet? How will this affect Lupo??
ReplyDeletecongrats to kate i am so happy for her. i could tell she was pregnant. im so sorry she is so sick though. I pray for her and her baby. I pray william is ok too and I pray they both have a healthy and happy baby. Diana must be smiling down from heaven. I bet wills wishes she could be here to see his child. God bless them both.
ReplyDeleteI was very glad to see Kate leaving hospital today, though understandably she looked rather wan. My thoughts and best wishes to them both and for a healthy pregnancy.
ReplyDeleteLucky her... She's lucky because she's happy...;-)
