William and Kate Visit Cambridge, Kate Discusses New Hairstyle, William Given Babygro

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge made their first visit to Cambridge today. The city's name was conferred by the Queen on the day of the royal wedding when Prince William became HRH The Duke of Cambridge and Kate became HRH The Duchess of Cambridge.

William and Kate travelled via train from Kings Cross Station to Cambridge this morning. It is Kate's first ever visit to Cambridge, the Duchess has never been there before.

CNN's David Wilkinson kindly shared a beautiful photo from Cambridge before William and Kate arrived.

Crowds lined the streets in the hopes of meeting the couple.

The couple began a busy day of engagements with a visit to the Guildhall where huge crowds cheered as they appeared on the balcony. The church bells rang out to herald the royal visit and the rain stopped just in time.

A lovely shot of William and Kate.

Kate enjoying the view of Cambridge from the balcony.

William and Kate went on a walkabout much to the delight of the crowds. William was presented with a present of a babygro by a member of the public with a picture of a chopper and caption 'Daddy's little co-pilot' (you can watch a video of that moment here).

The couple were met by Lord Sainsbury of Turville, the Chancellor of the University, and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Leszek Borysiewicz at the senate house and were given a private introduction to the University and the Senate House.

William and Kate attended a marquee reception in the Senate House Yard where they met staff and students from all the Cambridge colleges and Kate met her father's first cousin Dr Penny Barton, a graduate tutor at Cambridge University who was among the reception guests. Dr Barton said the whole family are 'proud' of Kate.

Prince William made a speech at the reception and said: "This is a day Catherine and I have looked forward to for a very long time: eighteen months in fact, ever since my grandmother, the Queen, on the morning of our wedding bestowed upon us the name of this great city. We both feel enormous pride at being associated with Cambridge, a place renowned the world over for its dynamism, beauty and learning."

The primary topic of conversation about Kate this week has been her new hairstyle. Many of you love her youthful fringe while others prefer her usual style. But what does Kate think of it? The Duchess revealed this morning she is unsure about her new style. Spectator Joanne Baldwin spoke to Kate during the walkabout: "I told her I loved her new hair style." She said: "I'm not sure about it. It's a bit windy today."

Rebecca English Twitter

Kate also discussed controlling "troublesome scouts" this morning when she met Jordan Wood, 17, who is the mayor of Cambridge's cadet:

'I love the position I have with the Scouts - I'm volunteering at the moment. There are lots of troublesome Cubs running around and things'.

The next stop was Jimmy's, an organisation which offers safety, security and support to the homeless. Jimmy's provides food, single en suite rooms and each year accommodates more than 300 people and provides 7,500 bedspaces. Jimmy's is named after Jim who spent much of his life homeless and spent much of his life sleeping beneath a bridge. When he died a group vowed that a permanent night shelter would be established in his name.

Following the visit to Jimmy's, William and Kate visited a local secondary school, The Manor School and their final engagement of the day was a visit to Peterborough Hospital.

Kate wrapped up in the MaxMara Studio Belli Belted Wool Coat (with thanks to British Royals) The £980 pale pink coat is a virgin wool and cashmere mix coat. It is single breasted with a funnel neck and comes with a gorgeous bow belt. A great choice, stylish and perfect for the chilly weather.

House of Fraser

Quite a few of you commented on the fact that Kate wore the belt upside down. It may have been unintentional. In a close up look at the belt we can see it's very pretty.

Kate wore a print dress underneath.

The Duchess wore her Aquatalia by Marvin K 'Royal' Weatherproof Booties (also known as the 'Rouge'). Silvertone hardware details on the side of a weatherproof bootie fashioned with an elastic inset at the side for an easier fit. The slip-resistant rubber sole offers excellent wet-weather traction. The €326 boots are available in sizes 5 to 12.

Kate carried her brown suede clutch.

Kate kept her jewellery simple, opting to wear her understated Kiki McDonough White Topaz and Diamond Grace Stud Earrings. They are available for £695.

William and Kate finished the day with a pub lunch at the Fort St George in Midsummer Common and enjoyed mini burgers, chips and sandwiches. They enjoyed the private lunch so much they had seconds.

It has been an immensely interesting engagement and a wonderful day for the people of Cambridge who have waited over eighteen months for a visit from William and Kate. I liked the choice of engagements and I always love a royal balcony appearance :) What did you think of the visit?

You can watch a video from the walkabout at the Telegraph.

There is also a video of Kate's speech at the Natural History Museum at ITN Source.

Kate will visit her old prep school, St Andrew's in Berkshire on Friday :)

  1. She looks beautiful here, love the bow detail on the coat! I would love to buy those boots if they weren't so pricy, will be looking for a similar pair though :)

As for Kate herself, regardless of the 100+ times gossip has claimed she was pregnant (so silly at this point), I actually hope there's a chance she really is this time! Which would be so amazing for the couple.

While she walks with William, instead of checking out her tummy (she won't really show for ages), watch the way Will acts around her. If all the pictures of them together seem like he is protecting her, placing a hand on her back and gently standing near her in a way to keep her safe, more so than usual--that's what I look for!

Usually he doesn't guard around her and lets her go on her own a bit more, so if he starts doing that, I think there's a good chance he's being protective of a possible little one on the way...

I love the look today ! Great coat and boots... Hope we'll get a glimpse of the dress which looks lovely too. She seems a bit tired though. Maybe there is some news on the way ;)
(I really didn't like the dress either yesterday, too mumsy for my taste.)

Thanks for the great posts, Charlotte ! Hope you are away from the dreadful weather poor England and Wales are getting. All best...

  5. OMG I just love this outfit! The coat is wonderful, the boots (very modern), the dress, everything. But the hairdo... I'm unsure about it, too! I think it makes her look a bit older...

  7. Loving the coat and the dress underneath but for me the boots are awful with the rest of the outfit being so feminine.

The boots look lovely in the stock photo but for me Kate's pair look a little too tired and casual for an official engagement.

Today for Jane - I agree it does look like the belts on upside down...still nice though.

For the rest she looks healthy and more relaxed, would be nice if she was pregnant!!

  8. There is our Duchess! Love this look from head to toe including the hair Love the booties with this outfit. The new hairstyle makes her look more youthful although I still wish she would do more with it. I am also glad she's put on more weight as she was looking rather skinny this time last year.

Sorry to rain on everyone's parade, but leave them alone about babies! They will have them when THEY are ready! Let them enjoy being married for a few years which I think is good for any relationship. I might also sympathize more with them since I am in the same boat as my family keeps asking me when my husband and I will have children (we just got married in October!). I didn't marry my husband to have children with him; I married him because I love him and want to spend my life with him!

PS--The upside down belt is a bit funny :o)

    1. I understand you perfectly (I´ve been married for 6 month now) and I couldn´t agree more about W+C baby affair. They will have baby when they want and because they want to, not because of public amusement. Neither is their obligation, still is Harry here and his possible descendancy. In brief, it is very serious and intimate think for every couple and I´m slightly under the impression that some of their followers take it as if they have some right or claim to/on a royal baby. And saying "this time REALLY seems like baby bump/ tummy" in each and every occasion she appears on public seems to me very "tabloidish".
Her coat looks warm and somehow tender, completing well her hair cut. Brown tones suit her in my opinion (more than black and gray), my only negative point are the booties,I liked them but they started to look old and scuffed.

      Hello!
I agree with both of you about the baby issue. This is something that makes me feel so very uncomfortable! I don't think it is fair to them keep saying she looks pregnant all the time. These last couple of weeks I feel people have been overreacting about it... I'm not married, but if I was, I would be really pissed about a situation like this.
I'm falling in love with her new hairstyle... She is looking gorgeous!
About the coat, I think it would look prettier without the belt, or with another belt... A thicker one...
Thank you for the update, Charlotte!
A good day to you all!

Ladies, I agree with you entirely! I also detest all that talking about a possible pregnancy. You said that you first wanted to enjoy married life with your husbands before having a baby and still you felt pushed by your families. And now imagine how Kate and William must feel while trying to have a baby. I believe that they do want to start a family as soon as possible, but you cannot say, "I want to be a mother right now" and the next month you are pregnant. Things don't work that way. And this is why all that guessing makes me so angry because it must put loads of pressure on Kate and William and that makes it all the harder to become pregnant.

They both have all the time in the world, dear Kate is only 30 years old, not 40. No wonder that Kate is so thin because all the time she has to make clear at the very first sight that she is not pregnant and still people interpret every belly growth they seem to see. I know, it's only because of the idea of Kate and William having a baby is so cute, but don't forget how hard all that pregnancy-fuss must be for them. I myself wish Kate all the best and that she will be pregnant soon, just because only then will that pressure be taken from her. Poor Kate!

On another note, the coat is nice and I still don't like the fringe, but it looks better today than yesterday. Perhaps her hair has to get used to that new cut. I always experience the same although my haircut never changes really.

    4. We've made a conscious decision that children aren't for us but no one can understand why we got married??! Like you it was about us not about children. Congratulations to you and your husband here's to many years of happiness together.

As for all the comments I think they are a little different as they've both talked about wanting children and not being too old etc. we'll see.

I think Kate looks much better with a bit more weight on, whatever the reason.

    5. I agree, for the average couple, having a child is a personal thing. But it has never been that for nobility, and certainly not for royalty. A woman's main role is those marriages has traditionally been to produce an heir, otherwise the whole family's fortunes could tank (for reference see Jane Austen!). I know we are now in the 21st century but a royal baby will never be just a baby but an heir or a potential heir, and until laws of primogeniture change, whether a royal couple has a child or not effects more than just them. In this case it effects the entirity of the Commonsealth, so there is a reason for people's interest beyond just tabloidish curiousity.

    6. I agree with 15:19--just ask Anne Boleyn! At least, the Cambridges are not under pressure to produce a male heir.

    3. Another win for the Duchess! Clean, classic, and the upside down bow reflects, I think, that she is not obsessive or overly preoccupied with her appearance. I love that! Love the new hair, youthful and fun! I'm sure she was also eager to try something new without altering the "Duchess Brand Look" too much.

As for William, I've said it before but I'll say it again: Please, someone, buy him and MAKE HIM WEAR something other than those dark, awful blue suits!!!

    Love the coat--she looks elegant.
Don't usually like ankle boots (unless hidden by trousers), but in view of the weather as they are weather proof and have a sole which grips seem very sensible.
I like her hair--when it blows about is infinitely preferable to lacquered into perfection.

  19. She certainly does look quite round in the face, whatever it means. The dress has interesting potential and I like the coat, but I don't like that inch or two of dress showing underneath. It looks sloppy. Not the first time that has happened either. I may be old-fashioned but I think a coat should either be longer than a dress or clearly a top-coat. As for the green dress, I've noticed that Kate often wears her plainest dresses when she's making a speech. Maybe it's a defense mechanism.

  21. Oh I love this outfit. A total 180 from yesterday's disaster! The soft pink kind of reminds me of the Emilia Wickstead dress that she wore to that Buckingham Palace reception, except that this more elegant (less little-girl like) and fits her better. Love the belt too, upside down or not!

I've never been a fan of booties (or "shooties", as the Order of Splendor likes to call them) with dresses, but the coat is so pretty I'm willing to led it slide ;)

If it makes y'all feel better, though, in my very humble and limited opinion, which I'm sure Kate couldn't care less about, yesterday's setup was one of the worst.

Maybe it was the perniciousness of that green Mulberry dress casting a bad spell on the new hairdo yesterday...

At the museum, the hair and dress seemed a bit tawdry and in fact it made her look a little less attractive (sorry to say, a bit more like Pipps). Well I suppose if she sweeps her bangs out of her eyes, it will serve her well coz otherwise she's having to shake them away every few seconds while she talks. It's got to be annoying to see your own bangs from your eyes every few seconds. That apart, today's look nailed it. Great coat and boots and she looks fantastic as always

  42. To Sarah from Australia--According to the British press, William has taken 5 vacations so far this year;
    1. hunting trip to Spain with friends, sans Kate; 2. trip to Mustique, where he joined Kate and her family;
    3. ski trip with Kate and her family; 4. his apparently annual trip to Cornwall, with friends, sans Kate;
    5. his unfortunate trip to France, with Kate. To date, William has not yet made his usual trip to Kenya,
which he typically takes without Kate. Kate has taken 3 vacations, as outlined above.
Regarding Kate, I liked the coat very much, but think she ruined its sophisticated line by wearing a dress
which was too long for said coat. I liked the ankle boot idea, but hers are showing their age. I have no
problem with her hair; the new cut seems more youthful, more suitable, given her age. Joan from Canada

Most of these "holidays" were nothing more than a couple of days or a long weekend.
Certainly Cornwall with Prince Harry was I believe 2 days and the unfortunate French trip was three or four days at his cousin's house.
many of the blogs criticizing them count tours on behalf of the Queen as a holiday, which is ridiculous.

Thank you Joan and Jean. As you pointed out, Jean, these holidays were pretty much long weekends. To me, that's not really a holiday, that's a quick break. Ah well, haters gonna hate.

I know quite a few people have had problems with the dress showing under the coat, but I thought it looked quite cute, with the almost-frill of the hem.

    3. I don't think it matters how many holidays they take. William works long hours as a RAF pilot and the Duchess does not see him when he is gone the 24 hrs. From what I have read his schedule is that he has about 3 to 4 of those shifts a week. Then is still is on stand by when he is not working. So he is entitled to take some time off with his wife.

I know alot of people still think that William does not have a full time job but he does.

I think they have taken 3 trips that were more then a few days. I know the ski trip was when William turned from his deploymnet and one was right before he left on the 6 weeks. Theother few we just short long weekends.

    4. I don't know about you guys but two-three day getaways are not vacations. These people are young, they live in Europe...if I lived in Europe I would travel also. I live on the east coast and think nothing about going away for the weekend or taking an extra day for an extended weekend. Vacations are usually two to three weeks out of work...NOT two- three day weekend excursions. Kate and Will should live while they are young...when they are old they can spend a month at Sandringham.

  43. Great post, Charlotte. Always impressed with how fast you update. I thought the Cambridge visit was very special. It always is when you visit your title city. And the crowds were wonderful.

While I enjoy seeing what Kate wears and all that, I'm really more into other things - the visit, what they say, the people they meet. So allow me to share 2 video links from ITV which I think sum up the visit beautifully...

This video has all the key moments: William's speech, walkabout, accepting the baby gift, Kate meeting her relative, etc...

  44. I think she looks pregnant. Her face has filled out quite a bit. Maybe the new fringe is to distract us???

  45. I wonder is she pregnant and the hairstyle is set to put us off the trail? Her face looks 'blooming'???

  46. It must really stink to have so many people constantly speculating about whether or not you are preggers...I feel bad for her once she does get pregnant as the scrutiny will surly be unbearable.

Does anyone know why she never takes off her coat while she is inside for engagements? It it a royal rule? Doesn't she get hot being inside wearing a coat? just curious.

  47. some people have asked about the large bag Catherine is carrying when she leaves the pub. I think I saw her assistant Rebecca carrying this bag in some of the pix (but they are not on this site). To be honest - I'm not that interested in the bag, but if I do find the link, I'll post it or you Sherlock's out there might find it first!

    1. Hi, I believe that was the longchamp le pilage bag?

    2. I think you can see part of the bag being carried by Rebecca behind Prince William and Kate arriving at the train station. It does look like the longchamp but in a paler colourway.

  49. Hello! Someone else already posed the question I was thinking about. Does anyone else wonder if Kate's haircut is meant to be a distraction from a possible pregnancy? I think if it was, it works. Pauline- you may have been on to something a few days ago.

  51. If - and it's a big IF - Kate is pregnant, I wouldn't blame her and William for keeping it secret as long as possible. The media and public frenzy that will follow will be a daunting prospect and I suspect they will want to keep that special time to themselves and close family for as long as they can.
