Kate's Photos Published, A Day in The Life of Flight Lieutenant Wales, Kate's Coffee Run With Lupo + Latest News

Kate has had a keen interest in photography for a number of years and is often spotted with her own camera, a Canon PowerShot G12 in hand. Today photos Kate took during the royal tour in September have been released on the official Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Website.

This picture was taken as the Duke and Duchess were travelling by car through the Danum Valley rainforest in Malaysia.

William and Kate were fortunate enough to see an orangutan during their visit.

The Borneo rainforest is one of the oldest rainforests in the worlds. Thousands of species of flowering plants, trees, terrestrial mammals and birds can be found in these vast canopies, but they are under serious pressure from commerce and changing weather patterns.

Kate took a beautiful photo of Mount Kinabalu, the highest point in Borneo, as they flew to the Solomon Islands.

What do you think of Kate's photography? I love black and white photography and thought those photos were particularly interesting. There has been talk of Kate holding an exhibition in aid of her charities and I think that would be an excellent idea, given the Duchess' talent behind the lens.

The official website also shared photos of 'A working day in the life of Flight Lieutenant Wales'.

It is designed to show a behind the scenes glimpse of William's working life. The Prince is seen making his bed and recharging his batteries with colleagues because downtime is an important part of the job. From the moment the crew starts its shift, they are at "Readiness State 15" between 8 am and 10 pm, which means they aim to be airborne within 15 minutes of receiving a search and rescue call.

According to the Daily Mail, William and Kate are ready to establish their own powerbase at Kensington Palace. Until now, William, Harry and Kate have shared an office with Prince Charles at St James' Palace but the trio are about to create their own court with more than a dozen staff beginning the switch to Kensington Palace next month.

Wikipedia

More from the Daily Mail Article:

'William and Kate, have a cottage on site but will soon set up home in Apartment 1A, which used to be occupied by Princess Margaret. The move is viewed as another sign William is preparing to leave his role as a search and rescue pilot in Anglesey. The new set-up will be known as the Household Office Of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry. The irony is Kensington Palace is where Diana fashioned her powerbase after her divorce from Charles'.

The Daily Express reports that Kate has accepted an invitation to become involved with her first military charity. The Duchess will reportedly begin taking an active role with  Help For Heroes shortly. The highly regarded charity provides direct, practical, support to wounded, injured and sick Service personnel, veterans and their families. Help For Heroes was founded by former Royal Green Jacket officer Bryn Parry and his wife Emma.

Help For Heroes

In five years volunteers have raised a staggering £135 million to help serving personnel and veterans. With Kate on board I expect this figure will soar. When an official announcement is made we will take a closer look at the charity and what Kate's role will involve. This is exactly the kind of charity that needs a patron like Kate who can help them to gain as much exposure as possible in order to keep providing their invaluable services. A well thought out choice for the Duchess.

A final reminder, The London Sole Contest ends Friday at Midnight (GMT). Good luck to everyone who entered. We will announce the winner in Saturday's post.

The ladies over at WKW FB found a Today Show Video featuring a couple of photos from Kate's coffee run to Starbucks with Lupo on November 12. Kate is wearing her black sheepskin Temperley Odele coat.

  5. As a semi-amateur photographer who has actually sold photographs, I can say that these photos are quite ordinary, taken through a pretty ordinary lens. I think that she can benefit from taking a few lessons on how to capture color and light and also dabbling in photography books and websites to get an idea of what real photography is about. Sites like photo.net etc offer a wealth of information on technique and how to train the eye.

That said, these are not bad for an amateur with little experience and a point and shoot camera.

Both Middleton girls seemed to have grown up with little exposure to the finer details in life, eh ? They can dress well, but what they have put out in the public - these pictures and the book, both reveal individuals who have not had exposure to brilliance. One would expect that they would know what real art is, or how to REALLY throw an elegant party.. Maybe they just don't *want* to expose that side of themselves.. who knows.

    1. Not really fair Portia. Very few humans on the planet have ever been exposed to brilliance, real art or have any idea what true elegance is.

    2. I don't think they are meant to be professional, just another point of view from their Jubilee trip on behalf of the crown. This picks where taken from a tourist point of view not professional.

    3. Some of the professionals commenting on TV have been much kinder.
As for never being exposed to "real art"--her degree is in art history and she also did a course in Florence in her gap year. Also for many years she has visited at Clarence House and all the other royal homes, stuffed with some of the finest art that exists. I think we can safely assume she is aquainted with real art and brilliance.

      Delete
    4. Ouch kind of a nasty bite Portia. Cut the ladies some slack and let them develope their skills. I'm sure they could both throw very sophisticated parties if they wanted to but maybe being conscience of those around them they have choosen to down play things. Maybe they prefer a more causal family atmosphere.

    5. @Portia- HOW can you be a semi-amateur if you have sold pictures? and you words regarding the Duchess's photos are not very kind. These are her private photos that she is sharing. She has never said she is a professional. And she was using just a camera like I would use for my private photos.

I beleive that the Middleton girls grew up with the best things. The Duchess studied art one summer in Florence.

So I would like to know what makes you a professional picture taker. I think her pictures are great from an amteur point of view.

Sorry to be so harsh but I feel you are being that towards the Duchess.

    8. Jean: I have sold pictures at crafts fairs where the money went to charity. I do something else for a living. That is why I call myself a semi-amateur.

If anyone is not dripping with sugarplums why do you criticize the person ? I am being rather harsh - yes, and I don't apologize for it.
      So there you go.

And for everyone saying that I am demanding "professional" pictures - do you see that word in my post ? Chill, people. This is just a blog. Please don't jump on people because they say something you don't like. Sheesh.

    9. Portia, you admit you are being rather harsh, well so are the others, so it not fair on your part to tell them to chill. If you have a right to express your opinion, so do the others, so CHILL.

I agree with Portia. I have been surprised at their shallowness. I expected more. They have so much privilege and opportunity. And the Duchess, at least, is 30 -- not a child -- and an art major. I'm really surprised she hasn't shown us more depth yet.

    11. Jane -how in your opinion are they being shallow? What was.it you expected?

The blog is about Kate, not a forum to jump on each other when others say things we don't like. It is one thing to have a candid opinion on the topic the blog is about: Kate. It is something completely different to express opinions about other posters.
I was telling people to chill as a way to defend myself. I think that is justified.

As for what I mean by brilliance and art, if you don't know what it means at face value I doubt a couple sentences from me will help.

      Delete
    13. Well said portia, quite right when someone states an opinion that others don't like everyone jumps in on that person. Not very interesting to read if we all fawn and ooh and ah all the time. We all have r opinions and they should all be respected, nobody is overly rude here.

      Delete
    14. Jane I would love to know your photography credentials. You must be extremely accomplished and I would love to see some of your own work that reflects "depth". Where did you earn your art major from and how old are you? To make such a comment you must be wise old master photographer for sure...

      Delete
    15. Portia may I remind you that you could not take others disagreeing with you so you defended your self. So what's wrong with me stating my opinion?? As far as art and brilliance is concerned your statement about it is the laughing stock so I won't even discuss it any further.

      Delete
    16. I don't find these pictures disappointing but I agree that Portia has a right to voice her opinion without being attacked for it. We can have different opinions! But please remember there is a fine line between healthy discourse and personal attacks.

Also while we are on the topic: lots of people follow this blog because we are fascinated by the Cambridges but once in awhile they will do things these royal watchers disagree with (pictures, outfits, engagements). Please please please don't jump down people's throats for disagreeing with your opinion. It isn't a reflection of their respect for the royals- just a difference in opinion about one facet of their world. The people rushing to the defense of William and Kate are jumping the gun a bit. There is no coup or anti monarchy sentiment- just opinions.

Kate didn't need to share her private pictures with the whole world. That was very kind of her. The Cambridge web site is having technical difficulties right now. I'll check again after all my work is done.

I sincerely quite like the photos. I also don't think the Duchess is trying to pose as a professional photographer. She is just sharing her emotions through the lense, like we all do, and I think that is a good idea.

On the other hand, I do agree Pippa's book is ridiculous. I can hardly believe she wrote such basic, silly stuff. And said she was grateful to be a writer ! As a professional writer, I expect her publisher is tearing his hair out for having paid such an extravagant advance... The Pippa tips on twitter are hilarious, and I'm sure the poor girl is feeling a bit mortified. Not easy for her, but how could her publisher not warn her ?

      Hi, Theresa!
I know Pippa's book is not a favourite, but I from my own experience, I can say Celebrate allowed me to learn somethings about Scotland, for example! I learned about the National dishes, like Haggis and Cranachan, Bonefire Night... Very interesting things to me!
The information in the book may be redundant to British people, but at least Celebrate may have spread United Kingdom's culture around the world!
      Just a thought ;)

      Hi, Ana B !
I hadn't thought about it that way. I'm glad you enjoyed learning some details about the British way of celebrating. But I do think the publisher should have been more explicit in his way of presenting the themes of the book, if the idea was mostly targeted at a foreign public. It's just the way it is written that I find very childish for a 29 year old girl ! All those basic sentences for very basic things. The "historical" part of the book is certainly better, as you say.
It will be interesting to see if the translations are a success. It is published next year here in France.
All best to you in the Brazilian summer, lucky you ;)

  18. Kate has a degree in art history with a final year specific study of PHOTOGRAPHY. So yes, these photos are an embarrassment to her degree especially as she got a 2:1 in said degree.

Also, for years we have been told that she's a keen photographer. Not by people who wish her ill, but by people who in theory think the best of her.

Having studied photography as part of her degree AND been taking photos as a hobby, THESE photos are an embarrassment.

These girls have been told that they are writers (Pippa) and photographers (Kate) and put out very basic materials that show that non of these things are true. BUT I guess a title and title adjacent can short circuit most people's critical faucalties.

Finally, those saying that somehow Pippa and Kate haven't been exposed to art and brilliance per Portia's assessment....hello!!!! Both Kate and pippa hang out exclusively with people with castles crammed full of art. For the best part of a decade they have been the No 1 party guests. Pippa actually won that title from Tatler in 2009 or 2008 (can't remember which), they holiday in exclusive places. All their friends are rich and FINALLY kate was able to come and go to Clarence House from 2007 onwards. Prince Charles has the best of everything.

So yes. They were exposed to the best of everything which no one on this site can claim to be (apologies if you are able to) and none of it sank in!!!

These photos, like the book, are an embarrassment.

    1. Wow what a nasty comment. I have never read anywhere where Kate says she is a professional photographer. As far as I have heard this is her hobby. And is there no where that says she studied photographery in college. Show me where you find this information.
As you STATED above these girls where TOLD they were a writer and a photographer. Neither one of them said they were. And I am sure Pippa did not write this book on her own. Usually you have a ghost writer who does most of the writing.

I think the photos were very nice. I am not a profeesional but do take photos as a hobby. And I too use the same camera the Kate used for these photos. It is one that any "normal" person who is taking photos for their personal albums.

So why don;t you just lighten up on Kate and just see these photos as coming from her personal family album.

    3. Since when did studying make you a professional???? Studying a subject is just that studying. Do you have any actual receipts about what she studied? transcripts, grades?? anything besides a news report?

  19. I find it amusing that people should argue fiercely about these pictures. As an ordinary person with no claims of photography expertise, I'm pretty sure my snaps would be far inferior to Kate's. I've actually read articles & seen news reports on TV (several from Sky & CNN) of real professional photographers critiquing her work, and most of them have been quite complimentary. Remember that the pictures were taken with a compact digital camera under limited time, and in some instances from a moving car or plane.

That said, I think what really matters is the fact that she shared these pictures in the first place. Haven't people complained that she & William are too private? That we know nothing of her except that she looks good in her clothes? There you go. For me this is a positive step forward in revealing Kate as an actual person. A brave step from someone naturally shy and very careful. I also like that their website is showing exclusive content. This aimed to draw more people to their newly revamped websites -- and draw more people it certainly did! As of this writing, we still can't access Kate's pictures "due to popular demand." LOL. Been down for several hours now. Prince Charles better buy more bandwidth!

I certainly hope & look forward to seeing more of Kate's artwork in the future, whether they're photographs or drawings or paintings.

  21. So admittedly I don't know ANYTHING about photography, they look like pretty decent snaps to me (there's one of a palm oil plantation on the Daily Mail site that looks like it would make a nice desktop background). I enjoyed looking at them.

That said... I think when you put your pictures out into the public, you're kind of inviting people to critique, no? I don't think it's fair or realistic to expect all the comments to be positive, and that goes for anybody posting anything online. Such is the double-edged sword of the internet...

    1. I agree the palm oil plantation is interesting, but I strongly suspect it has been included because much of the destruction of the rain forest has been for such plantations.
A difficult subject, because people need to make a living, but the destruction of the forest has effect on the climate.
William's patronage of the research there was the reason for their visit and I suspect one of the reasons for publishing the photographs.

  23. Sarah from Western Australia22 November 2012 at 09:18

Well, my knowledge of photography basically amounts to pressing a button. I've seen professional photographers' work, and some of it I didn't like, couldn't see the point of... same with a lot of modern art actually.

So Kate's photo's? They look fine to me. I'd like them for computer desktop backgrounds or something like that. And snapping them from a car or plane - well, I am impressed. I am nowhere near that good taking photos while moving. So while nitpickers gripe about positioning and whatnot, I think they're all right. Just wish she'd used colour for the orang-utan one.

Look, she probably didn't have props and ultra expensive equipment. She probably wasn't trying for something of stellar quality, even if she did have training in photography. She probably didn't order the plane or car to fly/drive just so, so she could take better pics. She probably just wanted to capture a moment in time, and didn't really have the time to get arty about it.

Kate, thank you for sharing your photos with us.

  24. Kate's original biog was released at the time of her engagement. Part of the concerted effort to present her as a thoroughly modern millie. In the biog, her interests were listed including the fact that her interest in photography was tied into her final year study. So yes. From that perspective I fully expect her to know more about photography than me whose only interest in it is fashion magazines. I think I have the intelligence to realise that she's not a professional BUT she studied it, AND has an art history degree which though not an art degree consists of hours upon hours of looking at various art. One can't help but become an expert on simple things like texture and nuance, even if one isn't drawing or painting or sculpting etc

It's interesting that until we saw this evidence of her supposed interest, everyone believed it to be true. Now we see another lie exposed and suddenly I am the nasty one or being mean or she should be given time etc. If we were talking about a young woman fresh out of college with no life experience, I'd agree with all of you BUT we are talking of a 30yr old who has had 10yrs of life experience etc. And why is it that when the under whelming Duchess is exposed, it's the fault of everyone else. Let's blame her PR who were trying to build her up as a woman of substance. Yes, it's their fault for all the lies. And yet she was happy to let us all believe the lie. We know she can correct any lies eg how swift was the palace denial of the hair extensions!!!???

These girls are privileged but surprisingly under accomplished BUT sold to the public as super accomplished. Pippa was both arrogant and confident enough to believe in her writing talents to turn down the services of a ghost writer, and to make it known publicly that she was doing all the work herself. Now we all see the results, major back peddling and excuses. Ditto Kate.

What's that children's story....the emperor's new clothes. You would all do well to read it because that is what is going on here.

    ReplyDelete
  25. So glad you don't judge Kate based on what you regard as the daily fail. Except I have a friend who works at the daily fail who can stand by the royal stories, but I guess you know better.

    ReplyDelete
  26. There was wide spread media coverage of her degree results 2:1 (upper class second hons), including her final year dessitation which was on photography and lewis Carol back in 2005. This is as true a FACT as Kate's attendance of St Andrews.

A simple google search will throw up this information without going to the daily mail website.

And just because the actual words didn't come from her, doesn't mean she didn't sanction them. Afterall, her official website lists several hobbies which include tennis, hockey and photography. As we haven't seen her saying that she likes these things, should we therefore conclude that her website is lying and or putting words in her mouth?

No one on this site knows Kate. We take what's in the media and base our judgements on that. She isn't a saint and neither is she a sinner.critical reports on her are as likely to be true or false as are praising positive reports.

so if based upon her degree course, particularly her final year special interest course, plus being told that she has a hobby in photography, then I'd expect both to be true AND for her to have a higher degree of proficiency, not necessarily professional, of the subject than someone who does not.

Otherwise the alternative is to believe that everything we are told about her is NOT true until we see evidence. That includes the good stuff as well as the bad stuff.

I read the article of "Point de Vue" : the distress they talk about is the one the Duchess sometimes feels when William is flying and she worries for his safety. It is based on quotes she said openly to people about these quite normal fears. Many Army wives, or people whose husbands or wives do a dangerous job, express themselves about them too. The paper built a bit upon that to say that it is possible William will be leaving the Air Force to take up more royal duties, which would also make Kate feel relieved.

May I stress that "Point de Vue" is absolutely not a "tabloid" and has never been. It is a very respectful magazine that specializes since decades in the royal families. It is known for its respectful and sometimes boring approach to them, always pointing out the good side of things. The editor, Colombe Pringle, is appreciated as a journalist and the magazine has a very good reputation here in France.

Our tabloids are called "Closer, Voici, Oops, France-Dimanche..." Nothing at all to do with "Point de Vue".

Wow Charlotte amazing the reactions or responces from a few pictures. I really do believe "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder " You couldn't pay me to put the Van Gogh picture of the the guy screaming his head off. (Which is worth a pretty penny) in my house. I'd rather have Kate's anyday.

    3. I do feel people are being unfairly harsh about the photos. I've spoken to a number of professional photographers privately who all think she has a good eye. It's a pity so many people only want to see the negative in her.

    4. Do you think some of the backlash is somewhat tied to "Middleton fatigue"? I feel like Kate's timing in releasing these photos was unfortunate as it followed the publication of Pippa's widely-hyped (and then widely-derided) book. The public can be INCREDIBLY critical of people perceived to coast on connections rather than talent. Personally, I never saw any press hyping Kate as the next big photography star, and I didn't think the release of these photos was supposed be a big unveiling of her artistic talent, so I'm surprised by the negative reaction. I think most of the photos (excluding the orangutan one) are pretty. I would love to see more candids featuring her and William on the website!

  28. Hello,

Has anyone picked up any of these multiple tabloids saying the Cambridges are having a baby in the new year? I haven't bothered because I assumed if it were true I would read about it in this blog. Just curious though if anyone knows why so many are saying the same thing at once. I'm used to one at a time going off on a baby hype, but it surprised me that all of them are doing it this week.
    Love the blog!

    1. Hi Ruha,

Yes, I noticed this too, especially the interview with a friend of Kate's saying an announcement is imminent. Who knows...it would be lovely news though, fingers crossed.

    3. Hello Ruha. I wouldn't read into these US tabloids. With the Jubilee tour over and nothing to report, the focus is back again on Kate's uterus. Please remember that Jessica Hay is an old (former) friend of Kate way back from Marlborough. She has been sharing stories about her since it was first revealed that Kate & William were going out. She appeared on TV shows all throughout the engagement & royal wedding. It was clear she knew nothing more than the next person. And no, she was not invited to the wedding. Needless to say, she's likely made a lot of money by talking. Kate's real friends do not talk to the press. That we can be very sure of.

Everyone loves royal babies, and for sure, Baby Cambridge is highly anticipated. But these things are best left for the couple. It is a delicate subject to discuss. I'd just personally wait for an official announcement -- however long that'll take.

  29. charlotte, do you have any more info about kate's help for heroes connection? how is she going to help? it doesn't look like it will be one of her royal patronages - those announcements are very clearly stated. and the help for heroes website does not give any info about kate's involvement (tho it does feature wills and harry with some nice pics).

i think william, harry and now kate are smart to establish high-profile charitable connections with military service groups. their active military service lends greater credibility to their support/participation in military charities.

    1. Hi Alpa,

It hasn't been officially announced yet but will be in the coming weeks and then we'll know what Kate's plans are in relation to working with them. It is such a worthy charity and a great choice.

    2. Might I add that this Help for Heroes bit was written by Adam Helliker of the Express. He doesn't have much of a reputation on leaking royal stories. Help for Heroes is a wonderful cause, but also very high profile with already lots of popular patrons. While I don't discount the possibility of Kate helping out, I'm not sure about becoming patron. She's gravitated toward the smaller, less known causes.

    3. that's a good point, dash: kate *has* focused on smaller charities and lower-profile causes. (which i think it great)

also, i would have thought if she was going to attach herself to a military service charity, it would focus on military families/wives.

ah well, i guess we will find out soon enough.

  32. Well wow. I am really saddened by some comments on here and some I have read from other sites. I thought the pictures were beautiful. Kudos to Catherine for putting her photographs out there for the world to see. I guess by showing the photos you invite comments (both good and bad), but again I think they are beautiful and open her up a little more to us. I suppose there will always be those who critique her for what she wears, how her hair is, if she takes a decent picture, etc. Loved the photos and I hope she will share more of her talents and artistic interests with us in the future.

Thank you Charlotte for another great job!

@Kate- I totally agree with you. Sonme people think she is a professional and really all she does is take pictures for their own family album. Even if she studied a year does not make her a professional. She used a camera that you or I would use for our own private pictures from a family vacation.

So I wish those who really have been nasty in their comments stop and think again that the Duchess is not a professional nor has she ever said she was. It has been the media and others who have put her pictures up there as a professional not the Duchess.

  33. while waiting for today's footbal pics, i re-read this post, and had some thoughts about will's, kate's and harry's new "powerbase" at kensington - and that charles is funding it. charles is still seen as a villain by many, and i think his funding his kids' new office, and 12 staff!, shows a generosity and lack of jealousy and insecurity that he is often accused of.

it would be v easy for charles to not fund a separate office for them, and urge them to stay in their military careers, but instead he is clearly pushing them to step up their royal roles, and making it easy by funding an office support structure. all this even tho he knows comparisons btwn charles and will will become stronger and more frequent as will steps up his royal role.

personally, i think will should stay in his military career as long as he can: having a "real job" gives will (and harry) greater credibility in the public's eyes; i think it's a major reason he ranked as he most popular royal in the recent poll. he has years before he will be heir, and his father, step-mother, uncles and aunts are capable to carry the royal standard for years still.
on the other hand, the royal family needs to appeal to the next generation as well as the current generation, and younger members can connect in a way charles, etc, cannot.
and it must be exhausting for will to balance both military and royal jobs.
perhaps the best option is the rumored compromise of will training for the military and doing more royal roles.

alpa- I'm from the USA and only know how I feel because of what I have read. I do hope William can hang on to his military job for as long as possible. He seems very fulfilled in this job. I get the feeling Prince Charles has been through enough to be able to say " come what may I'll do all I can to help my boys" That's just my thinking.
