Kate Loves: Coats Part 1

With Winter upon us we are looking for the perfect coat to keep us warm while looking stylish at the same time. I've had a number of requests for a 'Kate Loves: Coats' and I thought it the perfect time to write the post. Kate has a fabulous collection of coats, both designer and high street. Today we'll take a look at Kate's pre-engagement coats.

In May 2006, Kate attended the wedding of The Duchess of Cornwall's daughter Laura Parker Bowles who married former model Harry Lopes at St Cyriac's church in Wiltshire.

Kate wore a gold brocade coat by Day Birger Et Mikkelsen from their Resort 2006 Collection. The coat has had a number of outings since, most notably at Zara Philips wedding.

Day Birger Et Mikkelsen

In December 2006, Prince William received his commission as an Army officer at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, with Kate as his guest of honour. All eyes were on the then 24-year-old who looked chic in a Giorgio Armani royal red angora coat (I want to say a huge thank you to the wonderful ladies over at What Kate Wore for the ID). It was the most high profile public event Kate had attended and she certainly looked the part of a future royal. The stylish coat was teamed with a black hat and black knee high boots. It is still one of my favourite looks.

End of  fashion style

Kate leaving her Chelsea flat with a police escort in April 2007 wearing a double-breasted black coat.

Later that month, Kate and Carole were photographed walking around Dublin City Centre after going to Gemma Billington's exhibition. The pair visited the National Gallery and shopped on Grafton Street. Kate wrapped up in a warm coat teamed with jeans and brown boots.

Kate was photographed wearing the stunning Zara basic grey shimmery wool winter coat a number of times during 2007. It's very eye catching and looked particularly striking teamed with the light grey dress below.

Kate wore a white Issa trench coat to the Diana concert in July 2007. An excellent choice for the cool summers we can get in the UK.

One of Kate's favourite coats is the Reiss Olivia. Kate celebrated her 26th birthday at Kitts nightclub wearing the ivory A-line coat.

Kate attended a charity event in 2008 wearing a black brocade coat by Day Birger Et Mikklesen. Another one of Kate's favourite coats which has been recycled countless times. A classic piece.

We'll have a 'Kate Loves: Coats Part 2 shortly and look at Kate's post engagement looks. Which of the coats featured is your favourite?

    Hi Charlotte!

I love your blog- it makes me happy. I like the Day Birger coat the best. She can wear it with anything- some of the others are beautiful, but more fussy and we all know how she likes to recycle but I still think a simple beautiful coat is the best!

  4. Great post. Thank you! :)

I think the ivory Reiss Olivia looks terrific on her. It's very stylish and young. The red Armani is nice, but it was stunning because of the way Kate accessorized it. And the periwinkle Jane Troughton had future royal written all over it in my opinion.

  5. I love the Reiss Olivia coat - it has such a great feminine shape. And I love the pic of Kate and Carole, they both look so natural and happy.

  6. my fave is the reiss olivia coat. such a great shape, and so well fitted i can't help but wonder of she had it tailored to her body.

i like a lot of her coats, and i'm surprised we haven't seen more of them since her wedding.

i'm surprised you didn't add the katherine hoooker coat to your review - both long version and short version were memorable!

I love the Reiss coat as well as the pink Joseph coat. The yellow brocade coat looks gorgeous on Kate; she wears it well & I like it - tho the picture of the same coat on the model does not do the coat justice. As a sewer, I see the lower seam as a "oops!" thing - we'll make this longer by adding a piece & let's re-do those sleeve hems. Not sure of the price of this coat - what do you readers think? ?

    1. i know what you mean. it is a beautiful coat, and i *really* like it on kate. (also like the cute fascinator)

however, it is a bit of a mess on the model, clearly too big and not ironed; it looks like the material is kind of cheap (resulting in it hanging badly) and not lined; the seams look badly done or at least as if they need to be ironed flat. i think this is not the official designer model and pic, just a woman wearing a coat for an ebay sale or showing us kate-followers her new acquisition or some such. charlotte, do you know?

talking about fit: i love it on kate in the pic charlotte posted; surely she had it fitted for her? however, at zara's wedding, i felt her weight loss resulted in it hanging on her unattractively, and i did not like the coat in that showing.

    2. So true! It almost swallowed her at Zara's wedding but in these pictures it looks bespoke!

  10. All Kate's coats are really nice, but for me the outstanding one is the red Armani. It is elegantly styled with a great collar, and would be snuggly warm as well. Perfection!!

  11. Hi Charlotte!
This is my first comment, but I've been following your blog for quite some time and I'm a BIG fan. I was just wondering if you had any idea when the photo in the pink Joseph coat was taken? I've been trying to figure out what year or what event it's from and I'm at a loss. I'd really appreciate any info you may have about it!
    Thanks,
    Sarah

  12. I like her white Reiss coat (I have the black version myself and it is the most beautiful, flattering coat ever) but when she wore that Jane Troughton coat I knew they were going to end up married...it was the first time she'd really looked like a royal.

I also love the ivory Reiss Oliva coat :)

  14. My favorite for work/day wear is definitely the white Reiss Olivia coat, it's perfect, I have a similar one.

On more formal occasions, I love the blue/lavender Jane Troughton coat. It is one of my favorites of all time. It's classic Kate!

And speaking about this wedding guest outfit: Charlotte, may I suggest a post about Kate's best wedding outfits? :) I bet this blue one would be one of them ;)
Big hug and thank you for another great post!

  15. Kate wears coats so well and can certainly turn a piece that might look rather uninteresting on its own in a stunning look. My favourites are the Reiss Olivia coat, it's so feminine and elegant and the A-line is very flattering; and the Jane Troughton periwinkle coat - it's elegant, regal, and the colour and design are gorgeous.

Hello! I think it is a great idea to take a look at Catherine's coats! Spring is the current season here, but when Winter came, I added 2 or 3 of those to my wardrobe, always inspired by the Duchess' choices.
My favourite is the Reiss Olivia. The color and the cut are very princess- like!!
The Joseph one won my heart because of it's pretty, pretty shade. The black coat that was not identified, is another excellent choice, I think.
And I can't forget the gold brocade coat. I love it, screams "I'm a Royal", but I guess it doesn't fit her anymore. She lost weight and the coat looked very big on her last year. But in that picture, she looks amazing!
    Can't wait for tomorrow!! Yaaaay!
    Hugs :)

Even though I am not a coat person (I live in Southern California) I love her style. Charlotte another great post. I do have to say you are the best.

Can't wait until tomorrow. Wonder what the beautiful Duchess will be wearing? Any ideas?

  18. Your blog is so much fun! I had never seen many of these pictures--or these wonderful coats. The red Armani and the white Issa remain my favorites though!

Thanks from your 66-year-old USA fan,

  19. My favorite is the periwinkle coat. It is just STUNNING!!! I am looking forward William and Kate's St. Andrews appearance tomorrow.

  20. I like a lot of her coat choices, but my favorites (for this round at least!) are the sparkly gray Zara and the white Reiss Olivia.

  21. Just out of curiosity how come she was getting police protection in 2007? I remember reading William wanted protection for her because of the paparazzi but because she wasn't officially a member of the family there was nothing that could be done.

Great selection of coats and wonderful work from you Charlotte

  22. I love the red Giorgio Armani coat!

  23. The only one that does not look dated now is the black brocade coat by Day Birger Et Mikklesen - thou could see her pulling out the gold brocade coat by Day Birger Et Mikkelsen from their Resort 2006 Collection again next spring since brocade hit so big this fall/winter again. The latter really was well tailored for her compared to the model photo of it. Also hated the Zara gray 'thing' photo - press went wild about how pregos she looked. She must have felt horrible hearing that. I know one time in the 80's I had a long jumper on - shopping trip into a DVD store and the shop owner asked me when the 'little one' was due and if 'they' would be listing to the Dead which was the CD section I was looking in at the time of the ? - I tossed out that jumper the next day to charity!

  24. I've been lurking for a long time and probably won't post that often - just wanted to thank you, Charlotte, for what has become one of the most enjoyable ways to start my day - sitting down at the computer with a cup of coffee and losing myself for a little while in your wonderful blog. It takes a tremendous amount of work on your part I'm sure, and like so many others, I come here first to see the news and photos of our lovely duchess.
Best wishes and thanks from a confirmed Canadian monarchist!

P.S. I love Kate in red, so my favourite coat is the Armani she word to Sandhurst.

  25. Your blog makes me happy!!! I LOVE all the coats pictured, but my favorite is the Jane Troughton periwinkle. I just love the color!!! She also wore it to Prince Phillip's 90th birthday celebration. Part of what makes all the coats look great is because Catherine is so beautiful wearing them. Being from Texas, you usually have one coat because it just doesn't get cold here often. How fun it would be to have a wardrobe of different coats to choose from! I love that you included coats in the Kate Loves. Another excellent post!!! Thank you Charlotte!!!

  26. The blue cornflower has always been my favorite. I was really surprised when either here or WKW, I don't remember, it turned up near dead last in a poll!

How does Kate do a long coat + bare legs or just tights, and not either freeze or sweat to death? I don't get it :(

  27. The Armani is my favorite! She could really wear a sack and look wonderful. She is classy and elegant and has brought so much good to the lives of others already.
Charlotte, you blog is great. I check it every day. Thank you!

  29. looking at the coat array again, i'm struck at how few of her coats are black - the safe, standard choice for most of us. of course, most of us do not have her pockets to buy a large selection of coats, or the closet space to house them all. but still, it reminds me how nice a colored coat looks; late fall/winter/early spring's wardrobes are usually a sea of bleak dark colors, and a colored coat perks up the appearance.

Love, love the coats. I'm in Central Calif. right near the ocean and when that fog rolls in I want to bundle up. Hmmm like the white one maybe some day.

  31. Hi Charlotte - I commented earlier asking if you had an ID on the pink Joseph coat. Just wanted to let you know that I found one - I believe the picture you have here is from Carole's 53rd birthday dinner on Jan 31, 2008, with her parents and Pippa. I also found a picture of her wearing what appears to be the same coat during the day in London in March 2007. Just thought you might be interested!
