Fashionably Kate: Whistles CEO Speaks About The Kate Effect, Kate's Wedding Jewellery Designer Opens First Store, Harrods Disney Princesses + More

A number of you have been in touch to request more fashion related posts featuring interesting and informative stories, 'Repli-Kate' options and the latest news from Kate's favourite designers. Perhaps we will make it a weekly post depending on news. The addition of the 'Kate Loves' section has proved enormously popular and very enjoyable for me to write during the interim of appearances and I'm hoping the 'Fashionably Kate' posts will be an enjoyable addition to the blog.

Many British brands have seen sales soar due to the 'Kate Effect' over the past two years but according to the CEO of high street chain Whistles, a favourite of Kate's, the aforementioned 'Kate Effect' has not transformed sales the way one would expect.

Jane Shepardson said in an interview with Business of Fashion:

'It raises profile, it's great, we get known in countries we're not known in. But it's not going to turn us into a success overnight because she wears it. The thing is that we don't do huge runs of anything. We might have sold out of it, but there might have only been 150 units'.

Kate wore the £150 'Bella' dress to the Olympics Closing Ceremony. That weekend it sold out and Ms. Shepardson revealed every time they have the Bella in a different print it sells out. However this week Whistles' trading statement revealed a double digit sales growth in stores and outstanding growth online.

The Bella dress is currently available in a number of prints for £150.

Very exciting news for fans of Kate's jewellery. Robinson Pelham, the jewellers behind Kate's wedding diamond oak leaf and acorn earrings, which were commissioned by Michael and Carole Middleton as a wedding gift based on the Middleton family coat of arms, are set to open their first ever shop on Elystan Street in London's Kensington.

The British Monarchy

The opening of the store will coincide with the introduction of several ready-to-wear collections. The jewellers will also re-model antique jewellery into something more contemporary.

A look at pieces from the Capsule Collection.

Robinson Pelham

Robinson Pelham's pieces are simply exquisite and I have no doubt we will see Kate in more of their pieces such as the mini leaf diamond drop earrings below.

One of Kate's most popular looks was the teal LK Bennett suit she wore in March whilst accompanying HM and Prince Philip in Leicester. The Davina dress and Jude jacket made for a striking ensemble and the perfect choice for the occasion.

De Montfort University Twitter

The Davina dress is still available in teal and a variety of other colours for £225. The Jude jacket is no longer available but L.K. Bennett has introduced the £225 Jetta Crepe Peplum Jacket (the Jude with minor modifications) The jacket is currently available in sizes 8-16. A lovely addition to anyone's office wardrobe or perhaps for an upcoming Christmas function. Are many of you fans of peplum pieces? On another note coats and boots are 25% off at the moment.

The wonderfully talented Jenny Packham has designed a fairy tale dress for the window of world renowned London department store, Harrods. To celebrate the new 700 square foot Disney Princess Pop Up boutique at Harrods this Christmas, the store has commissioned a number of leading international designers to create their own imaginings of fairy tale dresses.

Jenny created a full length empire line chiffon gown in amethyst with a pleated chiffon bust and tulle neckline encrusted with amethyst Swarovski crystals. A flowing full chiffon train embellished with cascades of crystals represent the plait of Rapunzel's legendary long hair. The magical design will be unveiled tomorrow. To see the other designs please visit the Harrods Facebook Page.

  2. Oh how I love those leaf earrings. Too bad they're probably WAY out of my price range. I remember Pelham saying that he would never release an exact copy of the royal wedding earrings but I love that he came up with something equally beautiful and creative.

Thanks for your thoughts on the hurricane too. I used to live in Maryland and got more than my fair share of being pummeled by tropic weather after Hurricane Irene and the random unnamed storm last summer that left us without power for five days in 95+ degree weather. A few months ago I moved down to the southern state of Georgia, and fairly inland too, so I figured I was safe - well in the last few days it's been so dangerously windy that the Boyfriend and I had a power line break over our heads as we were driving, no power/no electric stove/no heating, and then a huge tree went down in our front yard that hit another power line and ripped all the wiring off of our house but fortunately didn't kill anybody. Right now I feel pretty darn lucky to be alive and posting on Duchess Kate!

  3. Great information. I think that retailers can expand upon the Kate effect by buying more pieces that are her style, not just the ones she has actually worn. There are ladies everywhere that appreciate a classy outfit, knee length hem and a sleeve on a dress. And a hat, of course!

  9. So sweet of you to think of your American readers! :) I live in the southern part of the U.S. and we're the ones who always get the hurricanes. So while it was nice not to be the ones with all the torrential rain, I still hate to see anyone struggle with all that power loss, the cancelled flights, and the flooding!

  11. Hi, Charlotte,

A huge belated thank you for your fabulous coverage of the Asia tour. I enjoyed it so much!

Your "Kate loves..." posts and this new focus are a lot of fun. I still don't think Kate is getting enough credit for the "Kate Effect".

Maybe the St. Andrew's fete will yield a new gown...

Thank you for your kind words for our U.S. friends. In Toronto,Canada we had some bad winds that brought down some trees and power lines. One poor woman was killed by a display sign blown loose. Shows you how strong a storm it was to spread so far north and west of the U.S. Atlantic seaboard.

I hope NYC, N.J. and all concerned are now safe and getting back to their lives.

    Best ,

I do think we will see a new gown for the St. Andrews dinner and reception. I'm thinking blue/navy is a strong possibility.

Sandy has had such a devastating effect, I believe over 50 people have lost their lives, it is a deeply saddening time for so many. I'm sure you've all seen President Obama's message to the people of New Jersey, but if not, here it is:

"Our hearts go out to the families who have lost loved ones. It's true that because of some god preparation the loss of life was kept lower than it might have been but for those individual families obviously their world has been torn apart. We need to make sure that everybody who's lost a loved one knows they're in our thoughts and prayers. I speak for the whole country there.

For those like the people I just had a chance to meet on this block and throughout NJ and throughout the region, who's lives have been upended my second message is: we're here for you. We will not forget, we will follow up to make sure that you get all the help you need until you have rebuilt"

  12. Thank you Charlotte for sending best wishes! We live at DC/MD border and we had horrible winds and rain starting Sunday night, all Monday and Tuesday. We had no choice but to stay hunkered down at home. Thankfully we din't lose water and power so that was good! Kate's wedding earrings are beautiful and I din't know her wedding earrings were a Middleton family coat of arms.Thank you for this post Charlotte, you rock! xoxo

  20. Thanks Charlotte for your lovely comment at the end. As someone who is in Wisconsin, we have been minorly affected with a lot of wind. Which, to me, I can't imagine how bad the storm is out there if 1000 miles away we are being blown away. My prayers go out to all those who are at the east and are more directly and severly affected.

Pauline-I hear some of the crowns and tiaras are so heavy that you can get a headache. I get a headache from a hair band. The jewelry is neat to see especially if it is old and has been passes down from generation to generation.

    Hello!
Sending my thoughts and prayers to everyone of you who have been affected by Sandy. I'm really glad to hear that you are ok.
Talking about Kate, I can wait for next week! I graduated from Medical School last week and now I am at home waiting for my register to come out so I can finallly get a job. This blog is really helping me with my anxiety. But I wish we could hear from Kate more often!
I would like to say that is really great to hear from everyone of you, to hear what you've seen from life. I don't know, but I love to hear and learn about other cultures and other places! It calms down my curiosity since I haven't been able to see the world outside until now... Just sharing my thoughts!
    A nice weekend!

I have several friends that are doctors and when I was in law school they were in med school. We all studied together but in our field. We went to the same school but I was in law & they were in medical. Hope you find a job soon.

Charlotte, Sarah and Pauline - Thank you so much for your support!
Charlotte - So glad to see a new post this morning! And an awesome one, as usual!
Sarah - I really hope to be able to help as many people as possible and certainly not only in my beloved Country!
Pauline - Here in Brazil, things work in a different way, I guess. It takes 6 years for someone to graduate from Med School. When you're finished you can specialize in some area. Next week I have some tests so that I can try to get a scholarship for the next 3 years ( I want to be a dermatologist, and I takes 3 years for someone to become a specialist in this area).

      Very excited for next week!
      Have a nice day :)

  27. Thanks for another great post and a wonderful addition to the blog. Personally I enjoy very much reading more about fashion, following Kate's and other royal ladies' style increased my interest in that topic so I'm always happy to learn new things and get the latest news and information.
I agree that probably not everyone is looking for the exact same piece Kate has worn, but that also items that are similar in cut, length and design are interesting to someone who follows Kate's style and/or who simply wants to dress in a classy, elegant and appropriate way. I live in Austria and we don't have most of the stores/brands where Kate buys her clothes, shoes and accessories, shipping costs for online shopping might be too high and some items are simply way out of my price range. That's why I like to look out for similar pieces and I think that's also the "Kate Effect".
And I hope everyone living on the path of Sandy is safe. It was scaring seeing all the devastation on TV, I can't imagine how it must be to experience that. Best wishes and prayers to all of you.
