What Will Kate Wear During The South-East Asia Tour?

Can you believe the tour is less than a week away? Are you all looking forward to it? I expect final preparations are being made at the moment for the couple's second tour with Kate focusing on her sartorial choices for upcoming engagements. It has been reported Kate will need upwards of thirty outfits which is quite a task for the Duchess who does not have a stylist. A number of factors would have come into consideration such as the humid climate, something which may see Kate choosing Spring/Summer pieces. Islam is the largest practiced religion in Malayisa and Kate will no doubt be conscious of that and opt for conservative, demure pieces.

We can expect to see a mix of designer, high street and recycled pieces. Kate arrived in Canada last year wearing the beautiful Erdem Cecile dress. Erdem is a well known Montreal-born designer, so it is entirely possible the Duchess will choose to showcase pieces by Singaporean and Malaysian designers.

Let's begin with a look at some of Singapore's most talented designers beginning with designer turned artist Benny Ong. Born in Singapore of Chinese descent, he moved to London to study fashion in 1968 where his charming, pretty designs became an instant hit. Mr. Ong designed uniforms for the British Airports Authourity, British Telecom and remodelled the clothes of security staff at leading hotels in Beijing ahead of the 2008 Olympic Games. The designer went onto to become a favourite designer of the late Princess Diana, creating many of her most stunning looks.

During an interview with Prestige Singapore Benny Ong was asked if he would like to dress Kate:

'Yes definitely. I would use Peranakan clothes. I think she would look lovely'.

I would love to see Kate wearing bespoke pieces by the incredibly talented designer. A look at traditional Peranakan clothing. Can you see Kate wearing something similar?

Todd and Diana

Singaporean born designer Ashley Isham combines contemporary and classic. The dresses Ashley creates possess a unique handwriting synonymous with the designer. Ashley was the official designer of the 2004 BAFTA's and his clients include style icons Keira Knightley and Angelina Jolie.

Below we look at pieces from the Spring/Summer RTW Collection.

Vogue/Ashley Isham
Jo Soh's Hansel is designed to cater to the modern woman and features original prints in all its collections. Named after her beloved Jack Russell terrier, the whimsical, sophisticated label is, in my opinion, quite wonderful.

Another strong possibility is Singaporean born designer Pabal Gurung. A look at his Resort 2013 Collection.

One of the couple's most exciting engagements during their visit to Malaysia will be an official dinner given by His Majesty The Agong at his stunning residence, the Istana Negara. Guests are said to include iconic Malaysian shoe designer Jimmy Choo. Kate is already a huge fan of the designer and could wear her favourite Vamp Sandals or Cosmic Pumps for the dinner which is likely to be held in the beautiful throne room.

The Blush

Another strong possibility is Malaysian born designer Bernard Chandran who is no stranger to dressing royalty including the royal families of Malaysia and Brunei. Due to this he has become known as the "King Of Fashion".

Renowned fashion designer Zang Toi has built a tradition of elegance for over twenty years and has dressed celebrities such as Elizabeth Taylor, Sharon Stone, Meg Ryan and Eva Longoria. While much of his collection would not be typically Kate, tailored, feminine dresses and jackets from his Spring/Summer 2012 Collection would look amazing on the Duchess.

Zang Toi

Farah Khan has been described as the driving force of high-end fashion and its presence in Malaysia.

'Farah Khan personifies the fearless dynamic woman. Sophisticated and sexy, she celebrates life with what she wears'.

Actresses Nina Dobrev and Krysten Ritter in Farah Khan. The designs are quite glitzy and sparkling therefore not typical of Kate's demure style, however, as Farah is one of Malaysia's best loved designers, I wouldn't rule it out.

Farah Khan

Kate will also need casual, practical clothing especially during her visit to Danum Valley where Kate will explore the jungle and possible see orang utans. We will most likely see Kate wearing a lightweight blouse and trousers (similar to the outfit the Duchess wore when visiting Blachford Lake) as I expect it would be too hot for skinny jeans. Zara have stylish yet comfortable trousers in stock at the moment, a favourite brand of Kate's.

Kate's 'go to' designer McQueen will most likely feature in her tour wardrobe.

McQueen

Other 'Kate designers' I would love to see include the aforementioned Erdem.

Erdem

The endlessly talented Collette Dinnigan.

And British designer Matthew Williamson.

Matthew Williamson

Other likely choices for Kate include, Jenny Packham, Temperly, Amanda Wakeley, Emilia Wickstead, Roskanda Ilincic and high street brands such as Reiss, LK Bennett, Hobbs and Whistles.

I would love to hear your thoughts on the designers featured in the post and what would you like to see Kate wear? I hope we see Kate inject a bit of colour into her wardrobe whilst remaining true to her classic style.

  1. Thank you very much for this, very interesting to read about the SE Asian designers. I lived in Malaysia for a year and it is VERY hot so I agree with you that jeans will be too hot for the rainforest. I hope we see something like chinos, it is not something she normally wears but they can look very stylish. So looking forward to the tour, it is going to be such fun!

  6. Great blog. I can't wait for this tour. I now have a blog to read. For the Canada tour I had to do all the work for myself and although it was fun it was very had work and a bit lonely. So I do appreciate all the work you do, and your fashion insight is beyond anything I could even start to do. Brilliant as usual. Well done :)

  7. I am looking so forward to this tour and can barely stand to wait. I already have the entertainment shows here in the US that will cover it set to record. And, of course, I will be reading your blog everyday. I would love to see Kate wear that black lace/hot pink Erdem dress as well as the green peplum Alexander McQueen.

    1. I loved the same two dresses! :) And given Kate's penchant for lace, I see the potential!

Charlotte thank you for this great post today. I can not wait until the tour next week. I am sure the Duchess has taken care of picking her outfits for this tour knowing that it is going to be very hot. I would like to see in some linen pants and tops. During the day she will not need her nude heels but maybe some type of scandels when they are not in the rain forest.
And hoping there will be a tiara in the evening.

  10. Great post Charlotte! Getting SO excited now!!!

Kate's Jimmy Choo's are from Tamara Mellon's era - she would need to be wearing Jimmy Choo Couture to have THE man himself's shoes...it would be wonderful if he made her some shoes, just like he did for Diana.

I think Zang Toi would look great on Kate but I think she will favour her 'go to' McQueen etc. like you say...can't wait for it to be revealed to us....

    How many sleeps?!

  12. Charlotte your posts are amazing! I don't even bother with Google anymore, you organize and present all the relevant info and photos about Kate and her work and lifestyle so well I don't need to check anywhere else online. I love all the background and fashion info you include too, it's great to get a glimpse of what designers and styles Kate might wear on the tour. Looking forward to both the tour and your great posts! Keep up the amazing work, you must have an idea by now how much so many people like your blog :) Thanks for it!

  13. This a great post! I'd love to see Kate in Pabal Gurung, but I think any designer she picks out will probably customise the outfit to suit Kate's style. When this happens, and although the clothing looks fab on her, I wish she didn't customise them. It obviously helps the economy and has many other benefits, but if Kate wants to change the style that much she should stick to what she likes and not customise designer clothing for the sake of wearing a certain designer. For example, the Christopher Kane outfit she wore just didn't say Christopher Kane to me.... and instead was an outfit made by Christopher for Kate. Likewise with the Williamson dress - it was too Duchess-y. Just my opinion.

    Thanks for a great post!

  19. Hi Charlotte,

How absolutely amazing can a post be???? Thank you soooo much!
Being from Rio de Janeiro I know what humidity, heat and sweat can do to one`s hair.... I`d love to see the Duchess wearing her hair up.

    1. Yes please...hair up. I'm nota female harridan, sorry journalist from our delightful tabloids and I wouldn't dictate what our Duch does but I do actually think shock! she can look better with hair up. Thinking Derby day, in the teal dress and casual bun while Tescoing. It definitely needs to be up on the day she visits the jungle at least as lots of hair in the face in casual chinos will not be a good look.

I don't really know too much about clothes to comment on that side but I do like a lot of the ideas on here. The evening wear will be beautiful whatever but am really interested in what she she wears in the day as it's such a demanding climate. Not long now!

  20. Apparently star magazine in the us is claiming Kate is pregnant. Star is one of the lower tabloids but being that there is no denial from the palace, the rumor mills are going in the us. Thoughts?

    1. I believe In Touch magazine has claimed Kate is pregnant five times since the royal wedding, I've noticed each time there is a gap in appearances (or Kate is seen wearing something loose fitting) the baby rumour goes into overdrive.

I think it's definitely a possibility William and Kate will have a baby, announce a pregnancy in 2013 but I don't think Kate's pregnant at the moment.

    2. Haven't they also tried to claim that she's barren?

@Sarah- I don't believe the beautiful Duchess is what you called barren. I bet that before she married William she was checked out to make sure she could have children. Let's face it her most important job (is to love William) is to have a heir or two.
I hope tht within the next few month she does get pregnant but I don't believe she is at this moment. I like the way all this comes out and it is from a "very reliabel source". Who in their right mind woudl be talking about the DEuchess & her Prices private time together.
Let's all prayer that when the Duchess does have a baby that he or she is born heathly and that the Duchess has a great pregnancy. They both will amke great parents.

    5. Oh of course I don't believe that... I was just trying to point out how ridiculous the tabloid is, that it keeps contradicting itself :P

Sarah I do agree with you about the tabloids. They have the beautiful Duchess pregnant every day. Like I said before Let's just pray that when she does get pregnant, she has a healthy baby and that her pregnancy is an easy one.

Oh and let's all keep Prince Harry in our thoughts and prayers as he is in the war zone again.

Sorry I meant to say Prince Harry is back in Afghanistan. He will be flying his copter. So we need to keep him in our prayers.

  21. I think it's always been the plan to wait to start a family because they didn't want to take the focus away from the queen's jubilee year plus their remodeled home won't be ready until 2013. I suspect once this upcoming tour is out of the way they can finally get serious about baby plans. It wouln't surprise me if we didn't hear any baby news from the Palace until after the first of the year.
