Kate Wears Emilia Wickstead for the Order of the Thistle

William and Kate attended a Thistle Service in St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh today where William was installed as a 'Knight of the Thistle'.

The ancient Order of the Thistle represents the highest honour of chivalry in Scotland and can only be bestowed by the Queen herself. Today marks the fourth day of the Queen's Jubilee celebrations in Scotland and it seemed a fitting time to install William into the order.

In Scotland William and Kate are titled the Earl and Countess of Strathearn.

Despite the dismal weather conditions a large crowd turned up to welcome the royals.

The current version of the order was founded in 1687 by King James VII of Scotland. The order consists of the Sovereign and sixteen Knights and Ladies currently including Prince Charles and the Princess Royal. The motto is 'Nemo me impune lacessit' (Latin for 'No one provokes me with impunity')

The Order's emblem is Scotland's national flower, the thistle. According to legend, an invading Norse army was attempting to sneak up at night upon a Scottish army's encampment when one barefoot Norseman stepped on a thistle, causing him to cry out in pain, thus alerting the Scottish to the presence of the invaders.

No doubt you will all recall the lace bodice of Kate's wedding dress featured detailing which symbolised the nations of the United Kingdom. Rose detailing, Thistles, Daffodils and Shamrocks were individually applied to represent England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

Lovely shot of Kate's profile. A journalist at the service said the Duchess 'oozed elegance' today. Kate's hair looks fabulous as always today, love the half up half down look.

After the ceremony 400 pipers, drummers and dancers travelled down the Royal Mile to the Scottish Parliament building. The Royals also attended a Thistle luncheon at the Signet Library, Parliament.

Kate looked elegant in a £1,200 Emilia Wickstead coat dress. Ms Wickstead told Daily Mail reporter Rebecca English the coat dress is soft yellow gold and was made especially for her and took about six weeks to complete.

Grazia reports the dress is not from a specific season but the yellow gold raffia fabric featured strongly in the Spring/Summer 2012 collection. The general consensus is it was not one of Kate's best looks and while the colour looked lovely on the Duchess I tend to agree. It didn't appear to be as structured as Kate's previous coat dresses, surprising for a bespoke piece. Some suggested it needed a belt and buttons. What do you think?

The Duchess wore her £99 Whiteley Cappuccino Parisisal hat.

It is the third time we have seen Kate wear the hat. She wore it to the Epsom Derby in 2011 and recently to the McCorquodale last month.

The Duchess teamed her coat dress with her brown suede Emmy shoes.

Interestingly Kate wore a similar bespoke Wickstead coat dress with the same Emmy shoes for St. Patrick's Day.

Kate carried her brown suede Emmy clutch and the scarf crafted of Strathearn Tartan (a nod to her title as Countess of Strathearn) she wore to the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant.

We will next see Kate Sunday in the royal box for the Wimbledon final :)

Thanks for the post! I think this is a lovely look. The colour of the coat is different from what we've see the Duchess wear and I think works well for the summer, yet the style keeps her warm enough during the dismal weather. (I can't help noticing the constant clouds and rain in most of the recent posts– is summer always like this in the British Isles?) She's wearing different shoes and they seem to be balanced on top by the colour of her hair. I've always loved this hat and it adds a touch of interest to an otherwise simple (but very elegant) outfit.

    1. This is the worst summer in almost 100 years. In April we were told there was a drought and it has never stopped rainng since!
The Duchess looks beautiful as usual and the hat, I feel, suits the shape of the coat.
She really cheers up a very wet and miserable summer.

  2. For the very first time ever I don't think I like her choice of outfit :( It's pretty of course but just so plain for such an important occasion. Kate always looks beautiful in anything but this coat dress doesn't do anything for her. I miss the days when she put together her outfits from multiple pieces, they were more interesting.

  3. The coat is a lovely colour. As much as I think it's unfair to comment on her weight, she looks so much younger with a slightly fuller face. She's looking healthier than she has in a while, it's nice to see

  4. I was hoping for her to wear yellow again soon, in my opinion its one of the colors she looks best in, and she looked amazing today. I especially liked her in the yellow Jenny Packham dress last summer in Canada. I am kinda surprised she didn't wear her lk bennetts with this, but happy about it too, I'm getting a little sick of them. I think these are my favorite pair of hers too, other than her purple heels with the bow she wore to a wedding last year

  5. Hey Charlotte good morning! Loved waking up to this post today morning:) loved the metallic color of Kate's dress . Although she should've worn the hat from the St Patricks day event. The current hat neither matches the dress nor the shoes. Still, Kate looks gorgeous as always :)

  6. I think she look great!! If she wore the scarf, it would look better. I was happy that she decide to wear yellow. It seem to be perfect match.

  7. The Duchess look great! I noticed that some people think it is too plain. I believe if she wore the scarf, it would look so much better. The color of teh coat is lovely. It is right shade of yellow. She really look great in this color.

  8. Brilliant post, Charlotte ! Thank you...
I love the Duchess today from head to foot. Wonderful to see her looking so happy also at Wimbledon.
Can't wait for their overseas trip in the autumn ;-)

  9. Lovely warm colour for the Duchess and the coat is the perfect example of elegant simplicity. Quite appropriate she carried the tartan scarf too. Thank you for the excellent post and for being the first as always

  10. Thanks for a lovely post. Again, you always include such informative, well rounded material-history, context, fashion-cross reference, and your own "voice." Best Duchess blog ever!

Not my favorite Duchess look but it's certainly one put together with a lot of thought. Nonetheless, I like how she looks both elegant AND cozy-comfy.

Again, I love how you highlighted how elements of design relate to the occasion (so crucial, yet most info outlets on the Duchess do not inform us of). Silvia

  11. I think se looks lovely but I am surprised close up the dress appears to have wrinkles, seam puckers and the waistr seam should be hidden by a belt.

It can't be workmanship and must be the material it is made of

  12. I love this dress, just as I've loved all of Kate's other Emilia Wickstead looks! Any idea where a similar scarf to the one she's carrying might be purchased?

    1. Try the Edinburgh Woollen Mills---they're on-line. There are probably other places on line which might be able to supply Strathearn Tartan

  13. I am really disappointed. The workmanship on that dress is bad. Look at the waistline and again hidden button front that drags and shows the buttons. £1200 is a shocking price to pay for something that is poorly made.

And I think that she needs to wear hats - real hats. This straw beret with the yellow c/dress doesn't work for me. This is the 1st time I've really not liked what she has worn.

Charlotte, thank you for giving us this great post. The beautiful Duchess was stunning again today. Loved the dress, shoes, hat ect. Wish we had more pictures of William & her together.
I have to agree with one of the post that the Duchess is looking good in recent photos. Her face if fuller and she is just looking more healthy.
    Can't wait for more updates.

  15. I really like this dress, the colour is beautiful, but I feel like there is something missing from it... Maybe a belt around the middle???

  16. You know I must say I'm generally quite underwhelmed with Emilia Wickstead's pieces. The yellow coat dress (despite being bespoke) looks quite carelessly made, a lovely colour for Kate but not one of my favourite pieces.

Thank you for your comments everyone :)

  17. This coat dress is too baggy, and ages her too much. I felt the same way about the green Emilia Wickstead dress (for St. Patrick's Day event).

Me too! I did not like the green Emilia Wickstead dress. I can say, for sure, that this is the only brand I'm not excited about when it comes to Kate!

  18. Actually I love the form of the Emilia Wicckstead's pieces; the full skirts and the coat dresses are simply princess material but what I don't like is the tailoring. The Emilia Wicckstead's pieces are poorly made and look cheap unlike the Alexandre macqueen red dress and the catherine walker red coat.

  19. This is definitely not one of my favorites. This coat does not look bespoke to me and I can't believe it took 6 weeks to make as there is nothing special about it. If she wore the scarf, it would have looked better and a taupe hat, yellow coat and brown shoes just don't go together...sorry :(

    ReplyDelete
  20. i love the yellow colour but yes something is missing .

but i do notice the duchess' face is filling out and thank God she looks so much prettier and healthier hope she gets back to her normal weight she was far too skinny.

  21. The colour looks lovely on Kate, though all in all today's outfit is not my favourite one. Something looks off to me, it really doesn't look like a bespoke piece for that price. But I love her hair and the Strathearn tartan. Thank you Charlotte for another great and informative post, it's always such a joy to come here and get the latest "Kate news" :).

  22. I agree with a previous poster, workmanship is poor, look at the hemline is uneven and the propostions for kate look odd, witha very high waist. The hat and shoes do not complement the coat at all. This is not a good outfit.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The color is nice and I like the contrasting shoes, but I agree with others who feel something is missing. Buttons or a belt would be a nice touch with such a simple design. And I'm not crazy about this hat. :( It has a stiff look to it.

    Hi, Charlotte!
I have to agree with you! This coat dress looks terribly made. I think it is her worst look ever since Kate Middleton became the Duchess of Cambridge. The past few times she was photographed I feel that she isn't matching her hats to her outfits in a beautiful way. I absolutely adore her, in every possible way, but I'm not feeling very excited about her latest choices.
I am very excited about her next engagements!

  25. Love the color the coat not so much. It's kind of shapeless. Kate looks much healither than before.

  26. Hi Charlotte,

Thank you so much for the post.

Lovely colour, the Duchess looks great in it, but this dress is not only too big for her but also very badly tailored, it is so not her.... it made me wonder.... maybe she didn`t wear a belt because she`s pregnant? I`d love to hear your opinion.

    1. Hello!

I don't *think* Kate is pregnant, she has been looking healthier lately and that's wonderful to see. To be honest the coat dress was very ill fitting, uncompleted looking. Kate has a fabulous figure but this coat dress wouldn't do anything for anyone. Very surprised it was £1,200.

      Delete
    2. Based on how slim she looked the day before at Wimbledon I doubt she is pregnant....

  27. Statement buttons would have made this piece a knockout. Perhaps the Duchess is having her bespoke pieces cut a bit fuller to accommodate a bump should one appear.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Have to agree buttons would have made a huge difference. The hidden fastening was all right on the pink dress, particularly because it closed on the side but is not good on this coat dress. This outfit is a beautiful colour but it looks like almost homemade in its fit. Can't see how it could possibly have taken six weeks to make or why the outfits in the designer's pictures look so better constructed.

  29. love the colour yellow coat its really suite her best fasinator was nice is kate preggers love her supporting william

  30. Thought the pink Emilia Wickstead was beautiful but this is a miss for me I am afraid. I do like the fabric and colour on Kate but the collar, length and finish- not so good. I do like the pleated skirt and top from the Emilia Wickstead promo pictures, maybe an adaptation of that would have been better. The hat just about works. As for carrying the scarf, it is a nice gesture but seems superflous.
    Great blog, thankyou.

  31. The coat has been made to look this way for a reason. She is pregnant, notice how William is protecting her.
She does need to get a clue about her shoes. All her shoes should be dyed to match her outfit. Shoes, hat and hand bag should all match. I agree she should have worn the scarf. She is looking radiant. I like to see her wear a sting of pearls once in a while also.

  33. Every time I see her shoes, I think they are black at first, I absolutely love them though. I also wish she would have paired this look with a broach, belt, and a new hat. I do like her in yellow a lot, although to me nothing compares to her green St. Patrick's Day outfit, I thought it was perfection!

  34. Sad the coat dress is so poorly tailored as I love when she wears brighter colors! Also that hat has always been one of my favorites of hers but doesn't match this outfit at all.

  36. All the Wickstead clothes Kate has worn (even though they are very simple designs which makes them easy to construct and fit) are poorly fitted and poorly constructed.

Wickstead is a graduate of Central St. Martin's design college and she knows better. There is just no excuse for this inattention to detail.

Kudos to your Duchess supporting a local designer and putting money into the local economy. It's time she put more money into your local economy by hiring her own stylist whose skills include evaluating garment fit and construction.

In order to look her best when representing GB and given how much busier will be after she has children, she really needs to hire her own stylist sooner rather than later.

Her own stylist would have spotted the poor fit and construction and worked with Wickstead's studio to ensure better results.

Check out either Victoria Beckham or Princess Charlene to see what beautifully constructed and fitted garments look like.

BTW this post is not self-serving. I'm not a stylist.

Kate is indeed going to Wimbledon tomorrow to support British number one Andy Murray. She will be seated in the royal box. William is not going due to 'prior commitments'.

Expect a post about 2 pm UK time :) The match will be televised everywhere also, well worth watching.

Shame on William for not attending with his beautiful Duchess....lol (just kidding). Any idea who will be attending with the Duchess? Maybe the Queen, her mom Carole or sister Pippa?
I do have to say I am really surprised that they will not be together for this. But maybe she was going to attend his commitments with him and then Andy won so she decided to attend the tennis match. I will miss seeing them together tomorrow.

Any news on why (what his commitments are that would keep him from attending) William will not be with his Duchess. It will not be the same without William by his beautiful Duchess' side. They are so good together. Just love seeing them shooting the loving looks to each other and the whispers like nobody else is around them.
But I will be up at 6am California time to see the match and hoping to see the Duchess.

  44. I think the outfit suited the occasion! Catherine looked demure and absolutely glowing. The coat dress seemed a bit big on her but overall I think it was a success for her first appearance in Scotland to support William and embrace her title as the Countess of Strathern.
