Lady in Red Kate Joins Senior Royals for The Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant

The Jubilee Bank Holiday Weekend officially kicked off with a wonderful display of pomp and pageantry at the Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant. Over one thousand boats mustered on the River Thames from the UK, the Commonwealth and around the world. The flotilla reportedly measured seven and a half miles from end to end is the largest fleet of ships to be assembled on the Thames in 350 years. The event has been two years in the planning and cost £10 million.

PA
Kate was heard describing the event as 'so exciting'. Crowds lined fourteen miles to catch a glimpse of the royals, reportedly more than the royal wedding. No doubt an unforgettable experience for Kate.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined Prince Harry, Prince Charles, the Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Philip and The Queen on board a tender that once belonged to the Royal Yacht Britannia, The Royal Barge, called the Spirit of Chartwell. The vessel was donated for use at the event by owner Philip Morrell.

A closer look at the Spirit of Chartwell.

Thames Diamond Jubilee Pageant
From the Daily Mail

'The boat has been described as a vessel 'fit for a Queen' and has been decorated with nearly 10,000 flowers. It has been transformed in a project led by award winning production designer, Joseph Bennett. Lavishly decorated with replica carvings and sporting a majestic red, gold and purple colour scheme, the vessel's design will echo the richly decorated royal barges of the 17th and 18th centuries. A lavish red, velvet banner decorated with a version of the royal coat of arms made from more than half a million gold coloured buttons hands from the stern'.

It has been widely suggested the Monarchy needs to scale down in order to survive and the seven royals sailing on The Spirit of Chartwell represent the core members, present and future of the British Monarchy.

PA
All senior members of the Royal family are taking part in the event, except the reclusive Duchess of Kent. It is one of the rare occasions the entire family are together.

A look at a map from the event.

The jubilee has brought a sense of national unity, thousands of street parties are taking place all over Britain. Today the Big Jubilee Lunch was held. The aim of the lunch is to get as many people as possible to have lunch with their neighbours enhancing their sense of community and friendship. People from all 54 countries in the commonwealth were encouraged to celebrate with a jubilee lunch.

A look at the pageant.

Kate looked lovely in a red Alexander McQueen pleated skirt dress. The cutout peplum showcases the A line skirt. The piece is from last years Pre-Fall collection. The dress was available for $2,045. Kate's dress is a custom made piece, lengthened with long sleeves. It is described as

'Rule, Britannia! Regimental uniforms, especially the British Order of the Garter, inspired Sarah Burton's Alexander McQueen Pre-Fall 2011 collection. Rendered in a vivid red, the exuberantly precise result is sure to delight both new and veteran fans of this British power house'.

I'm delighted Kate chose red for today, not only is it a fabulous colour on her but a nod to the jubilee. It is noticeably similar to the pink Emilia Wickstead dress the Duchess wore to the Sovereign's Luncheon and most recently the Buckingham Palace garden party. The dress has been worn by a number of celebrities including Kim Kardashian (Yes, I never thought we would see Kate wearing the same dress as KK but Kate's is quite different :)) and X Factor judge Tulisa. Kate carried a tartan scarf made of newly created Strathearn tartan, a nod to her Scottish title 'Countess of Strathearn'. She briefly wore it before she disembarked from the barge.

It was no doubt a memorable occasion for the Middleton family who sailed on the Elizabethan. Pippa looked absolutely lovely in an Orla Kiely ensemble. Pippa was obviously conscious of looking conservative and not detracting attention from the event with her sartorial choices and she did a wonderful job. Carole Middleton looked sophisticated in a cream dress and jacket. Mike and James opted for classic suits, the family appeared to be in very high spirits throughout the pageant, wonderful to see HM including them.

The Princes looked very dashing today. Prince William wore his Flight Lieutenant No 1 dress uniform while Prince Harry, a captain in the British army wore the No 1 ceremonial dress of the Blues and Royals and Army Air corps blue beret.

The Queen's outfit was designed by Angela Kelly. The ivory dress and coat decorated with crystals was a year in the planning, perfect for the occasion.

It was a simply spectacular day, despite the dismal weather the mood in London and indeed around the world was one of joy and celebration. We are unlikely to see an event like this again for a long time. A wonderful way to celebrate Her Majesty's Diamond Jubilee.

I'll see you all tomorrow for the Diamond Jubilee Concert :)

  5. Is Kate holding something else along with her clutch, our is that part of her bag? I thought it might be a scarf, but I'm not sure. I think her longer hem looks a lot better than the shorter, but I'm kind of surprised she's wearing a dress that other celebs have worn, even if she does look 10 times better!

  7. Beautiful pictures! Love Kate's outfit especially her hat! Is it true that Pippa is wearing the LK Bennett Maddox Wedges and the Milly Jacket? Loved Carole's outfit - a cream suit. Very simple yet elegant1

  14. Kate looks stunning in this little red pleated number. Funny I just had a blog about how we can obviously see she love pleats. :) I have a red wool dress very similar to this one except for mine doesn't come with pleats. :) Just like I have expected, I love her fascinator hat. It reminds me of that maple leaf one she wore in Canada.
Pippa's suit looks bit ill fitted. But...we are not focus on her in this blog, right? Kate's mother looks good in the white suit.

Oh my god, the beautiful Duchess looked just stunning in red. Love that color on her. I loved her hat too. I don't think she up staged the Queen becuase if you wacthed the pagneant the Queen was always front & center. The Duchess stood away from the Queen like she was giving her the space to shine. Just wondering why William stood away from his Duchess most of the river trip. Charlotte what is your take on that? If you watched the whole thing you would see when the shown pictures that William was on one side and his Duchess on the other. It was William, Harry and then Charles. I not saying there is anything, but William is always near his Duchess. Or was it planned that way so the three princes would be near the Queen???
Also any idea where the royal family will be sitting for the concert tomorrow night? Hope we get alot of good pictures of the Prince & his beautiful Duchess.

Hi, Pauline! I was reading your comment and I have to say I disagree when you say William and Catherine were distant from each other during the pageant! While I was watching it, live on CNN, I saw them both, plus Harry, talking and sharing some laughters!

    2. Pauline, I agree with you. I asked on another blog if people thought they had been a bit off with each other lately, and others think so as well.

I wonder if it's the book.

Given that the queen was in White the duchess of Cornwall in cream and the two princes in blue. What a fantastic choice of colour. We are British red White and blue are our colours and that's what she did!!

  21. First of all, I'm new here, but I always come here to check de ultimately news about Kate (and William). Pauline Oak Hills, I felt a strange feeling about William and Kate lately. Not from afar, they resemble the same couple a year ago. There is no exchange of eyes between them, does not appear to be comfortable with each other. William is always looking upset at the events. Hopefully it will be a passing phase, because sooner or later, rumors that things are not going well between them, will begin appearing in newspapers and magazines around the world. By the way, I really liked the look chosen by the Duchess of Cambridge for the event today.

  25. I like the dress but as usual I wish she would wear her dresses at the knee and with a slip. Actually, I like the belt with the dress - I wish she had put the belt with it. I like the hat and the fact that she wore her hair back. Purse adds a little fun. Camilla must be a riot since Kate seems to be always laughing at something Camilla appears to have said or pointed out.. I have heard she (Camilla) is great fun. The Queen looked fabulous and no one could have outshone her today. The Pipster looked fine - I think that the Orla Kielly brand seems natually a relaxed fit. At least no one talked about her derriere...

  26. Everyone is commenting on how William and Kate seem distance. Will seems slightly tense and Kate is seeming slightly harried. Giving their busy jubilee schedule/ William's decision if he wants to continue with the air force/ moving to Kengsinton Palace/upcoming royal tour/knowing that they will be taking on a more public role/knowing you will be king and queen one day and the ever present pressure to produce an heir on top of being newly married would make anyone stressed. I hope they can get past this hard time of transition and into a relatively quiet winter when they will have time to relax. And hopefully around Christmas we will hear a pregnancy confirmed.

Ok Charlotte you live in the UK so we need your input regarding the way the Prince was looking toward his beautiful Duchcess today. We all think there was something not right with them. There was no loving looks between them, no locking eyes like they always do. As you can see by the pictures they were not together on teh boat. The Duchess was on one side and William was on the other. They did not seem very happy with each other today. Please if you can clear this up for us fans.
I have never noticed the Duchess walking a few steps behind her prince which she did today. There was no guiding hand on her back as the prince always does. Or is this all of our imgination going wild.

Also I have been looking for your piece on "Kate Loves" and you had done "Kate loves William but I have not been able to find it. If it got lost when your blog was down could you do another one for his 30th birthday. What I remember of it you had some great pictures of the two.

Again thank you for this great blog and I can't wait until you post pictures from the concert. Do you get to attend? And do you know where the royals will be watching. We here in the states don't get to see it until Tuesday evening on ABC. But that is ok at least we get to see it.

    1. I noticed the same thing and thought it odd that during the luncheon where Kate wore pink, William seemed to be talking to Harry and others and not looking at Kate at all. I read that that first year is the hardest for couples so I'm sure they have their disagreements like all newly married couple. I hope he's not jealous of the attention she's getting the way Charles was of Diana. I would love for this fairy tale to go on but if we were to be realistic, he is the future King and there has to be temptations everywhere he goes.

  30. Pauline - You know there is so much intricate behind the scenes planning and coordinating that goes on, down to the last detail. For example I just read an article slating Kate, Carole and Pippa for wearing red, white and blue and looking like bunting, I felt it very unkind. No doubt Kate's outfit was thoroughly thought out rather than simply putting it on. It is the same with William and Kate's romance, I think they were massively aware of the fact it was the Queen's day, and didn't want anything to detract from that. However, I did watch the event live throughout the day and they were chatting away with Harry, lots of smiling. Photos rarely give us an indication of what's actually going on, merely a glimpse into a second of the day.

Charlotte, this is why I love you and your blog. You can see things that us fans can not. We all want the beautiful Duchess and her handsome prince to live happy ever after. I just wrote this not above becasue of what others were saying so I thought since you are in the UK and some of us are not that you would have a better view on this. I went back and looked at the pictures and they were smiling and laughing but there was not the little things that William always does when they are out and about. But as you said that it was the Queens day and they did not want to take away from here. I too watched it live, I got up at 5:00am to see it. I did not want to miss anything. The only thing that I saw that looked a little funny was when theywere showing them on teh barge, William was on one side and his Duchess was on the other of the barge. But I don't know how long it was like that. And why did the Duchess have to walk a step or two behind William. I never have seen that before.
Thank you for helping us understand all this. Your the best.

  31. You people...must have watched too much "Sherlock"...LOL I didn't watch the event so I had no clue about those details or better said, lack of details between these love birds. :) I really enjoy watching them together and sincerely hope this marriage does work out. In fact I just watched a documentary Netflix just made available for free streaming called "William and Kate, The Royal Love Story". It wasn't the epitome of documentary film making but it was very nice to see massive amount of information and pictures of them being together even back to those younger years. :)

  32. I'll be honest: I'm getting really tired of people "reading" or rather, wishing for ill, between the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Enough, already! They are doing just fine. I don't get this nonsense.

Everyone looked awesome, it was a day of celebration and festivities!

Loved what all of the Royal family wore (the Duchess of Cambridge looked ABSOLUTELY splendid!!). The Queen was marvelous-I LOVE her clothing! Always have. Would love to have her wardrobe!!

  35. Thank you Charlotte once again for covering this magnificent event!!Kate looked gorgeous in red. And I did see a picture of hers wearing the scarf. I'm guessing it was in the latter half of the journey. I did see the loving glances between Will and Kate- really subtle but if you observe closely specially when they were entering the flotilla. Charlotte do you know who the designer is for Carole's suit?? It looked understated yet elegant.

  37. Thank you for your lovely comments. I thought it was a lovely outfit and a spectacular day.

The concert is starting in just over an hour, Sadly Prince Philip is in hospital again! I will update on that in this evenings post.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm sad that Prince Philip won't be attending the concert and he has been one heck of a rock and partner to the Queen. That being said, I am rather turned off that kate wore a dress that a Kardashian would wear. I think someone at Alexander McQueen should have warned Kate about that. This is not the right shade of red for Kate, reminds me of that red coat she had on Canada that got mixed reviews. I was hoping she'd wear the white outfit she wore last year to the Trooping of the Colour with the little peplums.

    ReplyDelete
  39. When I saw Duchess Kate with the red dress I immediately thought that this colour is too much for the Queen's Jubilee. All eyes were on her - but only when she was not in the presence of the Queen, because when I saw the boot's interior, I understood that this was a clever choice by the Duchess as she almost vanished in that entire red decor and the Queen was beaming with her wonderful white outfit.

I learned that Prince Philipp suffers from a bladder infection, I am so sorry for him. Yesterday we (my family and me in Germany watching the Pageant) all praised his health and upright position and couldn't believe that he is 90 years old. But I am convinced that he will recover as soon as on Christmas!

Regarding the impression of some of you of some kind of distant behaviour between Prince William and the Duchess: I must say that I saw so many pictures in which they seem as close to each other as always. Definitely no need to worry, I am sure. I think that the Duchess has become more familiar with the other members of the royal family, so that she doesn’t' need her husband’s presence all the time.

By the way, have you realised how close Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, and Kate are? They always seem to have a good time together. And the Queen seems to be quite fond of Camilla, too. And so am I, I must admit, although so many people dislike her. I believe she is a nice person, I like her looks and that she must have an enormous amount of humour - I like her!

Thanks for this wonderful blog, Marion

I can not read this word on his lips, but I decided to post the link here for you to make your interpretations. By the way, I'm very sad about the speculation about possible friction between William and Kate.
