William and Kate Visit Imperial War Museum

William and Kate attended a reception at the Imperial War Museum to launch the First World War Galleries centenary campaign. It is the couple's third engagement of the day. They privately visited MI6 this morning and attended a reception to celebrate the Scott Amundsen race. See today's earlier post for details

2014-2018 marks the centenary of the First World War. Working in collaboration with national and international organisations the museum will mark the centenary by leading a vibrant four year programme of cultural activities across the UK. One of the projects 'Faces of the First World War'  sees photographs from the museums collection uploaded to Flickr. The museum will add a photograph to the collection each day until August 2014, the anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.

The museum receives less than 50 per cent of their funding from the government. If you wish to donate you can do so here. You can also visit the online shop which sells models, gifts, posters and much more.

Kate chose a dark grey dress by Amanda Wakeley for the event. You might be thinking, Have we seen this before? Kate wore the oatmeal version of the sculpted felt long sleeved seam dress whilst visiting the Royal Marsden Hospital last September.

The dress is unfortunately sold out. Kate bought it in black, grey and oatmeal for £450 each. It is described as

"Sculpted felt knee length fitted dress with 3/4 length sleeves and a slash neck. Features seam dealing. The cut of this dress really contours and flatters the body."

Kate teamed her dress with the Alexander McQueen Chain Embellished Leather Belt. (With thanks to Alanna from WKW FB) The belt was available for €1,385 but is now sold out. Below we see it teamed with the McQueen military blouse Kate wore during her visit to Birmingham last August. Kate possibly bought it with the blouse and decided to wear it separately?

Kate wore her Jimmy Choos Cosmic Pumps. They are currently available for €525.

The Duchess accessorised with her beautiful Temple of Heaven 9ct Yellow Gold Girandole Earrings by Cassandra Goad. The beautiful earrings are available for £1,220.

Kate chose an Anya Hindmarch clutch for the second time today. This time opting for the hinged Maud clutch bag. It is available for £450. The clutch comes in a variety of colours and can be personalised.

When I initially heard Kate was wearing grey I wasn't ecstatic but the structured Wakeley dress teamed with Kate's gold earrings and chain belt looked really lovely. Ladylike elegance never gets old in my opinion and Kate pulls it off so well. It was my favourite sartorial selection of today. Which did you prefer?

William and Kate will now visit friends for a celebration before returning to Anglesey to celebrate their first anniversary. I'm planning a special post to commemorate the occasion. Looking back over the wedding and the couple's first year. A beautiful photo of Kate graces the cover of The Lady this week.

  1. I know lots of kate fans out there have been "complaining" about her being safe and even dull when choosing outfits. But I can't have enough of her simply, yet very elegant looks. I love these dresses with sleeves. I am getting some myself. :)

  2. Absolutely stunning! Breathtaking! I just love her hair like that! Much better!

  3. HER HAIR IS UP! YEAH! Maybe she reads this blog? :)

I actually like this dress a lot more in this color than when she wore the oatmeal version. Maybe it's because she's accessorizing it?

    1. I'm with you, Megan.

I didn't really like the oatmeal dress (I find it boring, and like something my mom should wear) whereas the dark gray now looks great on her. It MUST be the accessories.
      * She looks lovely with her hair pulled back (I think she looks younger)
      * Those earrings are GORGEOUS. I love them!
      * The belt is another great/youthful/different choice that I'm loving.

I really liked the blue outfit from earlier but she definitely looked better with this one (just because I find it to be a "younger" look).

  5. I like the way these two are true to themselves - I believe that Kate wears her hair down, because she likes to wear her hair down. So good for her.

  9. I love this look with her hair up. Also, the belt and earrings were a fantastic addition.

  10. Agreed, I really thought the earrings and belt transformed the dress.

  11. Wow! I think she looks absolutely fabulous here!

  12. Thanks for the great updates. The beautiful Duchess looked stunning again. Loved her hair up but as some women might know, they wear their hair the way their husbands like. So maybe the Duchess wears her hair down most of the time because that is how her Prince likes it.

Loved the earrings and belt. It made the dress. And the looks they gave each other you can tell they are very happy to be together and so in love. And the little PDA her Prince showed just made my day.

    1. I'm almost their age and never dreamed of William as a teenager but I am falling in love with him now that I see him as such a loving and protective hubby. I hope they will loosen up even more in the future (now that they don't have to "hide" their love).

  14. So, are the days of the Duchess in high street fashions over and done with? I
Part of what I loved about her so much is that she wasn't ever a slave to designer brands even though she can obviously afford it. I get it- she is a princess- but she also a representative for a country of people undergoing a recession. Thoughts on this anyone?

    1. I think that what makes her sooo loved and admired is the fact that we feel like she is one of us; and wearing the same brands we do, she makes us feel we can be just as pretty as she is.
I'm not saying people won't fall for her anymore, but it shows us that she is really not one of us.
But that is just my opinion...

    2. These dresses the Duchess wore today were not extremely expensive. You can't expect the Duchess to wear something from KMart. Her & her Prince are very aware what the enomonic postion the country is in.
I love the idea that the Duchess buy's her dresses from the mix of very expensive to not too expensive. We also need to remember that the Duchess does recycles her clothes too.

    3. Do you think that she has "risen above" the high street standard, and will be relying on designer fashions from now on? I really hope she goes back to wearing normal clothing, it humanizes her in an important way. Honestly, I much prefer to see her in her LK Bennett heels rather than Jimmmy Choos etc. Do her more "high end" choices effect the way your opinion of her?

  17. Thanks for posting the pictures Charlotte!!:) Kate looks beautiful as always.

I thought she wore a darker color because she wanted to maintain a sombre tone to the event--War Memorial.. Even then Kate looked stunning!

Is there a video to this visit??

  18. This is definitely my favorite look of the day...she looks absolutely beautiful! Everything fit properly, her hair is like an advertisement for some wonderful product and she is just...well...stunning! ( I know I say this in almost every one of my comments but, I don't think it can be said enough! LOL!)
Thanks for the post...your updates have been wonderful as usual!! Keep it up--we can't wait to see your anniversary special! ;)

  19. Love the whole look-again, very classy and respectful given the broader WWI history/memory context.

I have to say: I'd vote for more semi upswept and fully upswept hair do's!! She'll surprise us one day by having her mane pulled back in a full stylish bun.

I LOVE the way William is standing almost in a deferential step back from Kate, attentively listening to her. It says a lot about them-the fact that it is not just HER looking at and listening to HIM speak at these events. That snapshot speaks volume about the kind of man William is . Silvia

  20. I was just watching Tv on Ireland Am (tv3) and a stylist was talking about outfits she had put together that we're based on Kate's style. She said that the coral jeans Kate wore were from Zara!! Is this true?

  21. Thanks for two quickly-updated and detailed posts in one day!

I love her hair up. It especially works well with the neckline of this dress. The belt was also a great choice.

  22. I love how quickly you update your blog. You have the best Kate-watch blog, seriously. I loved the earrings and the belt. Any chance you could repli-Kate them for us ? What a lovely polished look she pulled off. I was not crazy about the hair though. Too romantic, while the outfit was more professional.
